“It ain’t over until the fat lady sings”
By now you’ve heard or read the superior court ruled against Donald Sterling, the ruling allows Shirley Sterling to sell the team. Wait there’s more; although Donald filed the suit against sale of the team he will still receive half the $2 billion selling fee. Donald can appeal the ruling however Roger Cossack ESPN’s legal analyst explained the complication in this course of action. According to Cossack; “Under California law sale of the team can proceed hand in had with an appeal,” isn’t that interesting an appeal and sale at the same time. Finally I’m borrowing from another when describing the Sterling saga, “This is not the end but maybe the beginning of the end.”
More likely he’s a power forward
We had an opportunity to witness Thon Maker in action as his Team Loaded (VA) was in action against Game Elite (GA). Maker is the number one junior in the Class of 2016. The teams were competing in the Adidas Super 64-Showcase Game in Las Vegas. I’d only seen Maker in action via YouTube but believed as a 7-footer he was a legitimate center. No doubt he could play center but after seeing his game Maker is probably better suited as a power forward. As I watched Maker move up and down the court the play by play announcer said; “He plays like Kevin Garnett.”
In addition he’s lean and tall like Garnett and may never gain a significant amount of weight. I mentioned he was in Columbia last month checking out the facilities at Mizzou. The outcome, Game Elite won 73-70 in overtime; Maker had 21 points and 11 rebounds while 5-star prospect Jaylen Brown scored 32 points and 15 rebounds for the winning Game Elite team. Brown is a Class of 2015 prospect and also has a significant number of high profile schools attempting to attract this talented small forward. Brown is from Marietta Georgia an Atlanta suburb.
White Chocolate
Some of you might remember Jason “White Chocolate” Williams who played for the Kings. White Chocolate was the nickname given Williams for obvious reasons. He was a white guy adept at distributing the basketball. His game was a throwback to that of Magic Johnson and Pete Maravich. His teammates had to already be ready for fear of being hit in the back of the head with one of his bullet passes. Williams retired as a member of the Grizzlies in 2011.
Williams might have an heir apparent, his name is Mickey Mitchell and he’s a 6-7 220 pound small forward. This Texan from Plano in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metro area is headed to Ohio State, he‘s a Class of 2015 and 4-star prospect. It will be interesting to see if Coach Matta will allow Mitchell to play his game within the scope of the Ohio State offense. Mitchell is not just one dimensional he knows there is a defensive side to the game too.
His dream job
Did you note the three Hall of Fame players at the introductory press conference for Byron Scott? In attendance were Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Jamaal Wilkes and Magic Johnson. Magic indicated Big Game James Worthy was in Europe and Michael Cooper is recovering from surgery they would have been there as well. It’s likely none of the former Showtime Lakers will become a member of his coaching staff. I believe Scott will certainly be able to call on them for their basketball insight and they confirmed this fact.
During one portion of the press conference Scott told the story; "As a kid I would sneak into the Forum and dream of playing for the Lakers one day." As for the negative side of this story, David Aldridge of NBA TV and others have hinted the Scott hire is a “smokescreen.” They believe this is designed to defray negative commentary while the team rebuilds. Aldridge and those of the same belief are certainly entitled to their opinion, I fail to believe the Lakers are tanking.
War of words
Houston’s Toyota Center is exactly 261 miles southeast of American Airlines Center in Dallas according to Google Maps. Allow a little history reminder, Chandler Parsons claimed last summer “he” was responsible for luring Dwight Howard to the Rockets. Fast forward to the summer of 2014, Parsons becomes a free agent and “expects” his team to resign him. The Mavs went after him while his Rockets went another direction, courting Pau Gasol and Carmelo Anthony and later Trevor Ariza.
At some point the Rockets declined to match the Mavs offer and Parsons signed with them. Just to clarify this “war of words” is not between the Mavs and Rocket it exist between former Rocket Parsons, James Harden and Dwight Howard. Harden said; “Dwight and I are cornerstones the balance of the team is role players, I think we’ll be fine next season.“ Harden went on to state the Rockets lost players and gain others over the summer. ESPN or TNT has got to telecast the first match between the two Texas teams.

Bits n Pieces
Of all the player acquisitions made by the Lakers thus far Carlos Boozer is the only one I question. Boozer affirmed the concern I thought about in his introductory press conference. He said; “I’d like to play 5 or 6 more years.” That length of time will delay the development of Julius Randle.
Speaking of Los Angeles the Clippers Chris Paul claims he will sit-out the season should Donald Sterling remain owner of the Clippers. All the legal efforts have been made by the NBA ownership will change. It might not occur in the time Paul thinks appropriate but it will occur. If Paul should follow through on his threat it will only provide Sterling the opportunity to file another law suit.
It will be a father versus son match when it occurs, Louisville’s Rick Pitino facing Minnesota’s Richard Pitino. The two schools are attempting to schedule a home and home series which likely will occur in 2015-16. Should we guess wife and mother will switch sides at half-time?
What in the world is going on with SMU basketball, the number two prospect in 2014 Emmanuel Mudiay changed his mind and decided to play in China professionally. Now 6-5 shooting guard Matt McQuaid who committed in May has de-committed. McQuaid was rated the number 87 prospect in the Class of 2015. There were a number of offers on the table for McQuaid before he chose SMU.
Interesting comment by Carmelo Anthony; “It was not the money, but instead his confidence in team president Phil Jackson and his belief that the New York Knicks “aren’t that far away from contending for an NBA title.” It’s always been my belief anytime someone says; “it’s not about the money” it usually is.
The Lakers finally hired a coach, over the weekend Byron Scott signed a 4-year
contract. I remember back to the Mike Brown hire and I can admit I was uncomfortable with the decision. Unlike with Brown I was extremely uncomfortable with the Lakers hiring Mike D’Antoni. Of course my main reason Phil Jackson indicated a desire to return as coach. Unlike the two previous hires (Brown & D’Antoni) the Scott hire causes me to leap in the air. Scott’s Laker team will compete and play defense.
Andrew Wiggins
A member of the media pointed this out and I will relay it to you. He said; “Wiggins should actually be starting his freshman year in college.” I along with a number of other folks had forgotten Wiggins reclassified and “moved up” his high school graduation by one year. He’s just a kid still learning the game I believe it would be a huge mistake for the Cavs to trade him. On Thursday he signed his Cavs contract he cannot be traded for the next 30 days.
Is gaining weight important?
We’ve heard “player A needs to gain weight” in order to play competitively in the NBA. Debate rages if this observation is correct. Reggie Miller no heavyweight himself said “when I arrived in the NBA I weighed 178 pounds,” on Miller’s 6-7 inch frame that weight compared to height is considered slight on almost anyone. This discussion occurred while Miller and play by play announcer Joel Meyers were discussing Cavs guard Andrew Wiggins (6-8 200 pounds).
Miller further stated; “A player needs to become stronger and not necessarily in the weight area.” Wiggins was matched against the Bucks Jabari Parker (240 pounds) on the block. Parker backed Wiggins down and then drove right around him to lay up the ball. Brandon Jennings of the Pistons might be considered too. It’s unlikely the diminutive Piston guard weighs the 169 pounds the roster indicates. Jennings seems to have carved out an NBA career without significant weight gain. A downside to weight gain it can sometimes impact a players speed.
Is he headed overseas too?
5-star Rivals prospect Skal Labissiere may follow Emmanuel Mudiay. For those unfamiliar with the name Labissiere is a 6-11 215 pound center and rated the number 14 prospect in the Class of 2015. He’s from Cordova Tennessee in the Memphis Metro area. Labissiere was born in Haiti but arrived in the U.S. after the devastating earthquake suffered by that nation. A number of schools across the country have offered scholarships to the talented young man. Wonder if pondering a move overseas might be influenced by the recent actions of Mudiay?

I’m curious
Stories have circulated regarding Phil Jackson’s impact with the Knicks. We are viewing this portrait as it’s placed on the easel, he‘s only beginning to paint his masterpiece. . We have no idea how many different combinations of paint will eventually be required to complete his work. This account is not intended to be complete; it only reflects a few of the questions we could foresee. For the time being general manager Steve Mills will remain with the team and report to Phil Jackson. Jackson now has his man in place hiring Derek Fisher. Fisher is certainly familiar with the triangle offense which most likely becomes the teams’ offense.
Finally the roster and there lies most of the problems of this team. The Knicks roster is an assortment of one-dimensional players who are paid far more than they contribute. One upon a time Amare Stoudamire was a valued player, injuries have robbed him of much of the offensive skill he once possessed. Cleanthony Early and Shane Larkin wil add youth along with newcomer veterans Jose Calderon and Samuel Dalenmbert. The key of course remains Carmelo Anthony. He seems to be receptive to the Jackson hire indicating “he’d adapt his game with the change.” Exactly what is Anthony saying; Jackson will not be coaching this team.
No “Love“ here
I respect Coach K. however I believe he’s off-base but he’s not alone. Several in the media have agreed with the coach the Cavs should acquire Kevin Love even if it means trading Andrew Wiggins. I heard a reporter describe Love as “A double-double machine, “I’ve never stated Love was untalented or even unwanted it becomes a matter of what you get. ESPN’s Chris Broussard is the first media person I heard provides details. Broussard said Wiggins plus 2013 number one Andrew Bennett and the Cavs 2015 pick would be included in any trade. A signed Wiggins cannot be traded for 30 days according to the NBA. For reasons unknown the Bulls are also attempting to acquire Love. My question might be why? They signed free agent Pau Gasol, in addition the Bulls have also acquired Nikola Mirotić 6-10 power forward that played for Real Madrid (Spain).
He’s skipping school
Mustang Nation has been in frenzy the last few years, the arrival of senior citizen Coach Larry Brown revitalized SMU’s basketball program. The school barely missed the NCAA Tournament this past season and even made an appearance in the Top 25. Last fall Dallas native Emmanuel Mudiay verbally committed to this improving SMU program. In the school’s basketball history it’s believed the school had never been a destination by such a high profile prospect. The 6-5 200 pound point guard was rated the number two prospect in the Class of 2014 by Rivals.com. Now for the bad news, recently Mudiay announced he’d changed his mind on SMU.
Mudiay will be on his way to China to play professionally; he will sign a 1-year contract for $1.2 million dollars and return in time for the 2015 NBA Draft. This is where the D-League fails to live up to what it was intended to do. Despite the perils of an 18-year old journeying to another country it appears Mudiay is willing, besides the fact the pay ain’t bad. I am unfamiliar with basketball in China, I have no idea how much instruction Mudiay will receive. It’s likely the NBA D-League can provide superior coaching but cannot offer the monetary reward. There might be other high school talent desiring to play in the NBA who might chance playing in Europe or Asia over one and done in college.
Choices
Our lives are full of choices, do we choose university A or university B? After graduating we are faced with employment choices, which perspective position is the best for us? Yes we are faced with choices even NBA players face this dilemma. LeBron chose to go home, Carmelo chose the money, and Bosh chose another city but changed his mind and decided on the money. The Rockets Chandler Parson deciding between Dallas and Houston chose Dallas. Parsons is just one of the many free-agents left to make a choice of a possible destination. We must include Pau Gasol, faced with the choice of three possibly four teams including the Lakers chose the Bulls. Luol Deng chose the Heat while debating a team. Choices are good as long as you make what you hope is the correct one.
Collegiate Hall of Fame
This not a knock on Shaquille O’Neal just the facts as I understand them. The Collegiate Hall of Fame in Kansas City announced “The Big Aristotle” or whatever name he is currently utilizing will be enshrined in November. At some date in the future he will be accorded the same honor in the Naismith Hall of Fame. As for other former players being honored this year Shaq is the only one who failed to play four years. The others Darrell Griffith of Louisville, Grant Hill of Duke and Zelmo Beatty of NAIA Prairie View all played four years. We must take into consideration Griffith, Hill and Beatty all played in a different era; they played in an era when players didn’t leave school early. Shaq’s LSU numbers are certainly considerable, 22 points and 14 rebounds a year for his 3 college years. Perhaps this is the future, outstanding collegiate players enshrined in the Collegiate Hall of Fame who don’t play 4 years.
Still no coach
I think all Laker fans are curious, the roster has practically been assembled and still there is no head coach. The question of a coach first surfaced last month prior to the draft. General Manager Mitch Kupchek had clearly stated; “There is no requirement to have a coach in place for the draft." Okay Mitch we understood that, what’s the holdup now? For all those folks who believe the Lakers are waiting for Doc Rivers to resign forget that. With lawsuits emanating daily from the Sterling camp you really believe he’d allow Rivers to break a contract? We can forget about Rivers as Laker coach I believe it’s either Byron Scott or a high profile college coach.

?????
Laker Julius Randle was visible sitting behind the Laker bench in the first Summer League game. New reports indicated his foot might require surgery prior to the season; however that was not why he missed the game. Later viewing TWC Sports Net Randle indicated he hadn’t signed his contract and later he signed his contract and was activated. My confusion the Cavs announced; “They expect to sign number 1 pick Andrew Wiggins in the coming week.” I’m confused, Wiggins has been playing since day one of Summer League play. I’m mistaken I believed rookies didn’t play until they signed a players contract; evidently that is not the case.
On the other hand
I confess there has been a running diatribe on my part by yours truly. I have complained and complained about the lack of quality big men in today’s game. Nobody’s quite growing it just seems big men today want to stand on the premier and shoot 3-pointers. Few want to go down inside and mix it up as Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain once did. We could make that same statement for the classic Laker-Celtic matches of Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Robert Parrish. There were others who mixed it up in the paint however the arrival of Dirk Nowitzki, Pau Gasol and others witnessed a change in the game at the NBA level. The aforementioned certainly are talented however these 7-footers game was outside not in.
Mentioned previously is Jahlil Okafor (Duke) 6-10 with 270 pounds packed on his frame. He is a throw-back a back to the basket type of center. Also entering his freshman year is Kentucky’s Karl Anthony Towns. He’s 6-11 and 240 pounds; Towns can drift out to the perimeter but does his best work down low. Another big man who mixes it up down low is still in high school, he’s yet to make a college commitment. Allow me to introduce to several of you 6-10 253 pound Diamond Stone. Stone of Dominican High School in Milwaukee is a 5-star prospect by Rivals and number six in the nation. The list of offerings for Stone a Class of 2015 prospect contains the usual profile college programs. .
Bits n Pieces
By the time this is read the Lakers may have named a new coach. I’m leaving it on purpose for you to ponder the strange statements made by ESPN’s NBA reporters. The question posed; “Why haven’t the Lakers named a head coach?” It’s unusual for such a lengthy hiring process and I’m confused too but I don’t believe this is the explanation. “They are trying to see if the delay in naming a coach that might influence Carmelo or LeBron to sign with them.”
Speaking of the Lakers it appears Andrew Bynum will sit out the 2014-15 season. TMZ had approached him at the airport asking him about the future. He said he’d like to return to the Lakers, well it certainly won’t occur this season. Bynum indicates he’s headed to Europe to undergo the same type of medical treatment Kobe Bryant underwent. We can only hope it’s successful and he can return to the NBA he would still be young enough.
I’m anxious to see Ben Simmons play this upcoming season. ESPNU usually schedules one or two Montverde Academy games each season. Simmons is a 6-8 225 pound forward; he’s a 5-star prospect in the Class of 2015. Montverde Academy is located approximately 30 miles west of Orlando. Simmons from Melbourne Australia is an early commit for LSU.
This is how it appears to work, LeBron recruits Mike Miller and James Jones to join him in Cleveland. Miller attempts to lure Ray Allen north while LeBron continues campaigning for Kevin Love to join his crew. I think the headline ESPN utilized was interesting they title these moves “Miami North.”
I’m watching a summer game and Patrick Ewing is coaching the Hornet team. It brought to mind “I wonder why the guy can’t get a job?” Interview after to interview and this HOF former play fails to be hire anywhere. Unlike Kidd and Fisher he’s put in time as an assistant coach to learn the craft. Why no Ewing I have no idea?

David who?
In June the Cavs announced they hired David Blatt as head coach, most of us probably had a puzzled look on face asking the question “who is David Blatt”? The media noted LeBron James is returning to Cleveland to play for a coach nobody knows. David Blatt might be an unknown however his coaching resume is quite extensive. He was a point guard at Princeton and played for the legendary Pete Carril while at the school. When he graduated in 1981 Blatt was not drafted however he begins a playing career in Israel. In 1993 Blatt begin coaching and that led him to several stops in both Israel and Russia. No one can argue he will have an adjustment period to the NBA, no one can make the clam he’s an inexperienced coach.
Part II
This story is titled Part II due to its connection to the Blatt story. Several of you might remember I wrote a number of college coaches are approached each year as perspective NBA coaches. It seemed the same names were always mentioned by the media. You know them, Calipari, Coach K. and Self, there are others but those are just a few. Recently Kansas Coach Bill Self reveals the Cavs contacted him about filling the head coaching position. He provided no further details but the story is interesting, did Self responding in the negative open the door for Blatt? You think Self might be regretting his decision now that LeBron’s on the scene?
He ain’t LeBron or Carmelo
Allow me to explain upfront I’m partial to Jeremy Lin; I’ve been a fan of Lin since his Harvard days. Although Ivy League basketball is not always readily available on television I managed to view several games. After seeing Lin’s name on several mock draft sites I believed he was headed to some NBA team I hope it would be the Lakers. That was not the case as he had several brief stops before “arriving” with D’Antoni’s Knicks and “Linsanity”. He would sign a free-agent contract with the Rockets that summer. His trade to the Lakers was surprising no shocking to this Laker fan. He’d been rumored headed to Philly but the deal fell through. The Lakers obtained Lin surrendering a player they received in a trade who most likely will never appear in an NBA jersey.
The Lakers received a future 1st round pick and a 2015 second round pick as well in the trade. Lin is signed to a 1-year deal and the better news his contract will not impact the Lakers salary cap next season. The Lakers should be active in the free agent market in 2015. I read someone described him in this manner; “Lin is part of the new breed point guards, a shoot first point guard. “ Holdover Kendall Marshall is the opposite skillful at passing but a reluctant shooter. I don’t believe Lin’s shoot first mentally will conflict with Kobe Bryant. My other concern is Lin’s defense, it’s unnecessary for him to be a great defender but he must be adequate. Lin lost playing time last season to Patrick Beverly who Coach McHale believed was a better defender.
They dominate the market
Basketball shoe endorsements are more prominent in the NBA than any other sport. NFL, MLB and MSL athletes all endorse shoes but it is certainly more prominent in the NBA. Nike dominates the basketball shoe market world wide; in fact it was pointed out the corporation controls 92% of the athletic shoe market. Leadership in the world extends to NBA players too; think seven of the top ten shoe contracts are paid by Nike. Dwight Howard, Dwayne Wade and Derrick Rose are in the top ten and the only top ten not under contract to Nike.
First he’s stayin’ now he’s going?
David Blatt stated “there was no way the Cavs would trade Andrew Wiggins.” There was no reason to doubt the statement made by the Cavs coach, recently news has changed on the matter. Late reports on a number of news sources state the trade is being discussed again. 2014 number one pick Wiggins headed to the Wolves in exchange for Kevin Love. Once again Blatt claims these are rumors sparked by the media. Wiggins is on a tear in the NBA Summer League, although it’s not the regular season he looks good. Most recently he scored 21 points and grabbed 5 rebounds and played sparkling defense. I believe Kevin Love is a talent however Chris Broussard of ESPN is claiming the Cavs have offered Wiggins, 2013 pick Anthony Bennett and their number one pick in 2015. Bennett playing better during the summer this certainly would appear lopsided in favor of the Wolves.

Burn a jersey---I don’t think so
I am unwilling to burn any NBA jersey, remember back four years ago when angry Cavs fans took to the streets setting fire to LeBron jerseys? NBA jerseys vary in price; youth jerseys can be a low $39.00 while you could pay several thousand dollars for an autographed Jerry West or Kareem Abdul Jabbar jersey. I have an Andrew Bynum Laker jersey which now is permanently in my closet; I no longer display it with my other Laker gear. I certainly have no desire to discard a $79.00 jersey. If your favorite player leaves by free agency or trade I would suggest you follow my lead just don’t display it. A fan at Cleveland’s Progressive Field was photographed last weekend with a LeBron jersey. The damaged jersey featured a quite prominent hole beneath the number 23. We must guess he either burned or cut-out a hole in the jersey four years ago. If I’m upset because the player was a free-agent and left or simply traded that’s the end of the story. I don’t know about you however I have no desire to waste my money intentionally destroying an item or items I’ve purchased.
Are rings a barometer?
I hope in the past I’ve not utilized the argument of rings won as a basis for who is the greatest. The discussion of rings has most often been conducted among the media, on other occasions we’ve heard from former players. I don’t believe I’ve ever heard from a Hall of Fame player discuss this matter. The other day I listened to Julius “Dr. J. Erving expound on this issue, he was questioned about Michael Jordan and his six championship rings. I’m paraphrasing his commentary this is not word for word; “Nobody is going to touch Bill Russell‘s 11 championship rings.”
He went on to mention among others Celtic John Havlicek with more than 6 rings. “You cannot simply state Russell and others played in a different era. There are 30 teams in the NBA at present there were only 8 during much of the ’50’s and ’60’s. The talent is actually diluted by the NBA containing even more teams.” Robert Horry won a number of rings playing for several NBA teams; in addition he played in the modern era. Is Horry more valuable than Jordan due to his ring count? Forget about the ring argument it’s not valid as measurement of a players true value.
He can be egregious too
I wanted to use the word egregious in the headline as ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith loves to utilize the word. Definition is; “Outstandingly bad; shocking.” Allow me to use the word egregious in a sentence. “Stephen A. Smith can certainly be egregious at times.” Sports broadcasting has changed, it’s now driven by social media as much as events. In addition the roles have morphed into something else as well. We have sports analysis and sports commentary, the difficulty is separating analysis from commentary. Does the report contain actual fact or just opinion? Whoa Larry are you stating Smith and others are not entitled to their opinion?
Of course their opinions are valid my issue is there is almost always two sides to the story. Often they (me too sometimes) attempt to persuade you to their view providing little if any evidence. For me the chief complaint is the omnipotent observation. “I’m getting paid to report this stuff so I’ve got to have a better handle on what’s going on than you.” We could use LeBron James as the most egregious story out there, it seemed ESPN had its staff making hourly reports on the destination of LeBron. Don’t know about you but shortly after his decision almost all reported “they were aware he (LeBron) was headed back to Northern Ohio.”
Heat fans beware
I’m requesting Heat fans be careful reading this, consider this fact I’m the same guy who believed last years Laker team would be “okay.” Of course a portion of my belief was based on Kobe Bryant returning in December or January healthy and available the balance of the season. As you are aware this scenario was not to be the Lakers had the very worst season in their 66 year history. As for the Heat Luol Deng will replace LeBron James in the starting lineup; he certainly is nowhere near the level of LeBron but should be adequate. Wade and Bosh return to starters’ role, as one media member said; “They are not rebuilding, they are reloading.”
Veterans Josh McRoberts and Danny Granger will provide relief in a reserve role. Although both are a year older veteran “Birdman” and Udonis Haslem return as well. Mario Chalmers also returns at the point however Shabazz Napier and Norris Cole will push him for playing time. This is but a thumbnail sketch of the 2014-15 Heat, in closing I can state with a degree of comfort. This Heat team will not bottom out as the Cavs did post-LeBron. The last question and maybe key is coaching, I can concur with the media in this issue. Spolestra changed and failed to changed his lineup at strange times during the season and post-season. I might add the lineup changes were not always a result of injuries or illness.
Oh for the good ole days
Dan Patrick was lamenting the demise of the Big East, Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullin and Pearl Washington. I can agree with Patrick the former Big East was intended to be a powerhouse basketball conference. That is indeed what it became, there were bitter battles between Georgetown and Syracuse. I can’t say ya or nay but Patrick claims football is the basis for the demise of Big East basketball.
One of the points worth mentioning Patrick said; “Ewing stayed for four years, in this day how many years would he have stayed one year perhaps two?” He’s correct in this regard there will never be another conference founded strictly on the basis of basketball. That was the original intent of Conference USA when it was founded we can debate if it ever reached the expected level. ACC basketball is the “it” conference at present, many who follow the Big XII want to lay claim to the crown. Kansas has dominated the Big XII however other members of the conference have not had much of a national presence.

McDonalds’s All-American
Expectations remain high for a high school player who is selected a McDonald’s
All-American. This annual spring event was first held in 1977; in 1978 the East-West format was adopted. The game was begun to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities and Ronald McDonald House programs. Being honored is not always a guarantee to play at the highest level. A number of McDonald players have managed successful collegiate careers minus play at the NBA level. The list of honorees that managed outstanding NBA careers reads like a “Who’s Who List of NBA All-Pros.” Below is just a partial list of former McDonald‘s All-Americans.
Michael Jordan
Patrick Ewing
Kobe Bryant
Paul Pierce
Kevin Garnett
LeBron James

Nerlens Noel emerged from Kentucky with a defensive prowess, he lacked an offensive game. His late season collegiate injury has delayed his rookie year in the NBA. He’s returned to the court during the 2014 NBA Summer League games. The 76ers hope his game will raise to the level of former Kentucky center Anthony Davis. The same statement would be considered of Davis, he arrived from Kentucky with a defensive mindset and limited offensive skills. Davis has worked on his game and is now a dependable offensive threat for the Pelicans. Davis had a monster game in an overtime win against the Celtics this past season. He scored 40 points and grabbed 21 rebounds while blocking three shoots. The possibility of an Embiid-Noel defensive front line is exciting.
Funny we always hear the same names mentioned for NBA jobs. You know who they are, Coach K., Billy Donovan, John Calipari and someone I’m omitting. I’m not sayin’ it can’t occur however these coaches are entrenched at their respective universities. Would the challenge or dollars ever be great enough to lure them to the NBA I can’t answer that question. This I do know, I tire of the media headlines every year at the end of the NBA season.
I will detail my psychic abilities for you, I was asked on Thursday prior to Friday’s
announcement the LeBron decision. I said; “I believe LeBron will return to the Heat, Dwayne Wade will sign a reduced contract and Chris Bosh will sign with the Rockets.” I have a great ability to see into the future----right?
Philly fans might believe NBA TV broadcaster Joel Meyers should keep his day job. At half-time of the Bucks-Cavs Summer League game he and analyst Reggie Miller were discussing rookies. Miller mentioned Joel Embiid and Meyers said; “We might not see him on the court this year, you get to red-shirt in Philadelphia.”
Speaking of LeBron did you note the “world stopped” prior to LeBron’s Friday decision. Sure there were news reports of moves but everything began moving once LeBron indicated he was headed back to Cleveland. A wealth of trades and free-agent signings were announced after his decision.
The Eastern Conference (revised)
Once upon a time I wrote the Heat would not repeat as conference champions. I prefaced my belief although at the time I believed the LeBron/Wade/Bosh tandem would remain. We know the current history, LeBron has returned to the Cavs leaving a “Big Two” unless Luol Deng makes it another “Big Three.” There could be a new champ in 2015 and it might even be the “new” Cavs. The Eastern Conference is now wide open it would appear. Will the Pacers seeing the opportunity rise to the forefront? As for the Bulls they have at least two offensive additions missing from the team last season.
The arrival of rookie Doug McDermott and Pau Gasol arrival should relieve the one area missing from last season----an offensive presence. A healthy Derrick Rose would also aid the cause too. It’s likely the Nets, Hawks and Hornets make the playoffs again but I cannot believe any of the three being viable contenders. As for the Nets they add Robin Lopez returning from a mid-season injury and subtract the veteran Paul Pierce now a member of the Wizards. The Hawks continue to make changes but will their on court play improve enough to become champions? The mystery team for me are the Wizards, they were quite impressive making the playoffs. In addition the Wizards re-signed Gortat, with Nene and the speedy John Wall might pose quite a formidable lineup. The Pierce-Ariza is a plus/minus for them. Finally we arrive at the LeBron led Cavs, as he indicated in his statement “they may not win a championship but should contend for the conference championship.” .

Are you a fan?
Dear Heat Fan,
I asking if you are a true fan of your team for a specific reason, I believe legitimate fans always retain commitment to their team. They hold on to this view despite what might appear to be a downturn in their fortunes. Fans suffer in the same manner as the team they love. As a Laker fan welcome to our side of the page, our Lakers have not been a serious contender for at least two seasons. Older Laker fans who suffered this past season remember the Post-Showtime era. No Worthy, no Abdul Jabbar and more importantly no Magic. As hurting as it was the Lakers remained my team, I did then and continue to bleed purple and gold.
This was the previous time the Laker brand suffered from poor performance on the court. We had to maintain the faith until the arrival of Nick Van Exel, Eddie Johnson and others. No NBA Championship was in sight however the fortunate of the Lakers changed after they began securing talent. Hey Heat fan your team will suffer in the loss column despite the best efforts of Pat Riley. Keep the faith, I believe in Pat Riley and I don’t believe he’s ready to surrender. I believe he will make his best effort to retain a competitive team on the court. Face it Heat fan you had a great run, four consecutive years in the NBA Finals and two NBA Championships. Heat fans you are disappointed but continue to believe in your team.
Sincerely,
Larry Laker

A writer questioned what position the Bucks Jabari Parker would play in the NBA. At
6-8 and 241 pounds don’t you imagine he could play the three, four or five? Consider this LeBron James is the same height but heavier, he plays small forward. Chris Bosh is two inches taller but Parker outweighs him and Bosh has played center and power forward at times.
Prior to the season the prevailing thought in Big XII circles the Player of the Year in the Big XII would be from Canada. That’s exactly the way it turned out however it wasn’t the Canadian most expected. Everyone thought Andrew Wiggins would be accorded the honor; it went instead to Melvin Ejim of Iowa State. The 6-6 220 pound forward from Toronto had a breakout senior year. He scored at an 18.2 ppg clip while snatching down nearly 9 rebounds and shooting .513 from the floor.
Mario Chalmers indicates he wants to remain in Miami, why should this be a surprise to anyone? Chalmers has ordinary NBA credentials but managed to strike it rich he was drafted by the Wolves but traded to the Heat. His pleas were answered, we cannot be sure if LeBron's exit may have been a factor however Chalmers was resigned. His days may still be numbered after his poor performance in the NBA Championship, the Heat drafted point guard Shabazz Napier
I don’t work for the Greater Cleveland Chamber of Commerce the disclaimer out of the way we precede. The City of Cleveland has been the butt of jokes for years some true others exaggerations. We heard many in the media say; “They (Cleveland) have a difficult task attracting free agents.” While they may have been true at one point it certainly isn’t now. By the way Cleveland ain’t that bad apparently just ask LeBron.
Money or championship is now the Carmelo Anthony option. Anthony makes the max if he resigns with the Knicks however no championship is on the horizon. As for the Bulls that’s a different matter, Anthony could possibly be the missing piece for a Bulls team lacking an effective offense at times.
I wonder if it could work
This is not my idea and I certainly don‘t intend to take credit (or blame) for it. I have given up hope Kansas City would secure another NBA team but what about a shared franchise? The 41 home games would be divided between St. Louis and Kansas City? This is not as strange as it might first sound; once upon a time the Kings franchise was shared with the City of Omaha the teams’ name, Kansas City-Omaha Kings. There were not enough available dates to allow the Kings to play all their games in the Municipal Auditorium.
Conflicted dates would find the team playing a number of games in Omaha, later this arrangement was changed once dates in Kansas City became available. This was prior to construction of Kemper Arena which would become home base for the Kings. Is it possible a shared franchise could work again? Both cities have NBA ready arenas actually in some instances newer than many in today’s NBA. Scottrade Center in St. Louis opened in 1994 and seats nearly 20,000. Sprint Center opened in 2007 seats a slightly smaller 19,000 for basketball.
Say what?
This is nothing official, no word has come from the Lakers office; it comes to us by way of TMZ. Andrew Bynum is a free agent; the Pacers released him shortly before the playoffs. They were the third team Bynum had played for since he left the Lakers. Actually it’s only two; he spent a year on the 76ers roster but never suited up. During the TMZ interview Bynum expressed interest in returning return to the Lakers. Here me out Laker fans before shouting out NO, I say I’m okay with Bynum returning under conditions. First and foremost a THOROUGH physical exam ensuring the knees are okay, as for his head that’s a different type of physician. He must sign a veteran minimum contract; he’s paid in the neighborhood of $12 million dollars.
According to NBA.com as a 12-year veteran the Lakers would be required to pay him $1,400,000. Sign Bynum for 1-year and determine the seriousness of his intent to return to the court. As for the age factor Bynum was in the last group of players to arrive in the NBA directly from high school, he’s only 26 years old. Hopefully this doesn’t appear to be sentimental nostalgia on my part. Bynum had his best years anchoring the center position for the Lakers, as for questions regarding his attitude I don’t remember any issues with Phil Jackson at the helm. The juvenile attitude he sometimes exhibited occurred under former Coach Mike Brown. In 60 games his last year with the Lakers he scored at an 18.7 ppg clip and grabbed nearly 12 rebounds. That’s far above the numbers produced by the 3-headed center of Gasol/Kaman/Sacre.

What a difference a year makes
When training camps open in September Chandler Parsons just might be in the Mavs camp. Parsons has signed an offer sheet and because he’s a restricted free-agent Houston can match the Dallas offer. Last season Parsons claimed he was "responsible" for luring Dwight Howard to the Rockets. Whether this is totally true or not what a difference a year makes, anticipated financial gain by Parsons may have changed his mind about Houston.
A team CAN exceed the salary cap if they desire
I might be responsible for some of the confusion regarding an NBA team’s salary structure. A team can exceed the salary cap if they desire; each team is unique based on its team payroll. Time and space prevent me from detailing all the variations, it’s far to detailed. Should the team exceed its cap they will suffer a league imposed luxury tax; the tax as well can vary based on a number of variables. The tax level for 2013-14:“The Brooklyn Nets, whose payroll for that season was projected to be over $100 million, would face a luxury tax bill above $80 million, resulting in a total payroll cost of $186 million.” Wikipedia
He’s got a shoe deal
Adidas got its man, number 1 draft pick Andrew Wiggins. Its noteworthy Wiggins wore the brand his only year at Kansas. As for the other top five picks Joel Embiid and Aaron Gordon are yet to sign shoe contracts. High profile draft picks frequently receive financial remuneration prior to receiving that first NBA check. As reported earlier Dante Exum the 5th pick signed a contract with Adidas in April. 2nd pick Jabari Parker signed with the Nike Jordan brand immediately after the June draft.
“Meet Me in St. Louis”
There was talk at one point the Missouri Valley Conference was exploring a move to another city, Kansas City was even mentioned as a possible destination site. St. Louis has served as host for the last 12 seasons and will continue so through 2018. Although a number of cities besides Kansas City had indicated an interest in serving the conference decided to remain in St. Louis. Attendance for the tourney at Scottrade Center was over 50,000 this past season.
The NBA East
For purposes of this account let’s assume the Heat return intact next season. Which team will face off against them? I have all sorts of questions regarding the Nets and their roster of ageing stars. Kevin Garnett has announced he is returning next season, most likely Paul Pierce will as well. The return of center Brook Lopez from the injured list should aid them if he can remain healthy. They have now replaced Jason Kidd with Lionel Hollins which should improve bench decisions. Bottom line the Nets is a +.500 team however I’m unsure if they are a serious threat to become Eastern Conference Champs. As for the others the most obvious contender (pretender) might be the Pacers. The Pacers were a disappointment to many, they were expected to rein supreme but failed once again to the Heat. How could a 7-foot player have a few rebounds as Hibbett had during their series with the Heat? Bottom line for the Pacers, “I’m from Missouri you have to show me” you can contend in the East. I’m probably overlooking the Hawks and Hornets and perhaps another team.
Every season it seems the Hawks are a playoff team but never ever seems to advance. They change coaches and change players and everything remains the same. I have no real clue why the Hawks are never serious contenders. It’s possible the Hornets chances might be more viable in the future than the Hawks. They appear to heading in a positive direction having made the playoffs. This leaves us with the only serious threat left for the Heat the Bulls of Chicago. They too were expected to compete but a Derrick Rose injury curtailed their season, Rose is back and apparently healthy. Two areas were addressed in the draft that is scoring deficiency. Sharpshooter Doug McDermott from Creighton and Gary Harris Michigan State have been added to the roster. The Bulls defense has always been exemplary the problem has been sporadic offense especially with Rose on the shelf. The 2014-15 season might be their break-through season if Rose can remain healthy and McDermott and others provide the vitally needed offensive punch. I will go on record stating if the trio returns intact the Heat will not repeat as Eastern Conference Champions.

Will he be the first?
7-5 Sim Bhullar submitted his name for the 2014 NBA draft despite the fact he‘s considered a project. You might be unfamiliar with him since he only played two years at New Mexico State. On his 7-5 frame is packed 330 pounds which certainly would make him the largest player in the NBA. Bhullar was born in Canada however his parents emigrated from India; he could become the first Indian NBA player.
Bhulllar has worked out steadily in an effort to improve his stamina and game conditioning. Bhullar is limited offensively however his height and shot-blocking ability makes for a look-see by scouts. He might be half way to a pro contract even if it‘s not in the NBA. The Albuquerque Journal is reporting the Harlem Globetrotters have drafted him; in addition he’s signed to play for the Sacramento Kings in the Summer League.
Two of a kind----perhaps
Mizzou is recruiting Montaque Gill-Caesar a 6-6 215 pound small forward. Gill-Caesar plays for Huntington Prep and last season was a teammate of Andrew Wiggins. The two also share citizenship from the same nation our northern neighbor Canada. Gill-Caesar is from Vaughn, Ontario a city in the greater Toronto metro. Rivals.com awards him 4-stars and rates him the number 31 prospect in the Class of 2015. There is no intention on my part to indicate he’s headed to Mizzou. Ohio State, Memphis and Kansas are also recruiting Gill-Caesar. Two weeks ago 5-star prospect Thon Maker visited the campus. For fans its fantastic Mizzou is recruiting along with the “Big Boys.”
It’s sad
The championship run by Miami ended with little contribution by 7 foot 273 pound Greg Oden from Ohio State. Oden the number one draft choice in 2007 was projected to have a game similar to that of the great Bill Russell. That was the label hung on the young man but then injuries and surgeries set in, five in all. The injuries and resulting surgery robbed Oden of the promise once held at the time he was drafted by the Blazers
Portland fans were even sadder when they witnessed the skills of Kevin Durant whom their team could have chosen. The 2008-09 would be his high water mark playing 61 of the 82 game NBA schedule, he would never again come close to that number. The Heat signed him for the 2013-14 season figuring they would need his height to combat the Pacers Roy Hibbert. He played in 23 games for the Heat during the regular season but only 3 throughout the entire playoffs. Although he’s only had two stops in the NBA it’s pretty apparent his NBA career is over which is very sad.

School is in session, NBA Summer League that is. Summer League games are held in two locations, Orlando and later Las Vegas and run from July 5-21. It’s our first opportunity to see a number of the June draft players in action against free-agent rookies and second year players. The games are available on NBA TV, if you happen to be vacationing in the Orlando-Las Vegas areas you can take in a game in person.
Who plays the point for the Lakers this upcoming season? Veteran and injury-riddled Steve Nash is still on the roster. As this is written there is a question if he’s still on the roster in January. Former lottery pick Kendall Marshall is still in town and it’s likely he makes the team. As mentioned the team made a draft day trade for Jordan Clarkson who is a point guard but can play the off-guard too. Age factor advantage Marshall and Clarkson (both age 22), veteran factor advantage Nash. As for Clarkson he was projected to be a late first round pick that slipped into the second round.

Sometimes
I’m unsure if I wrote something or not so if this is a repeat forgive me. This morning at the barber shop the television was tuned to NBA TV. A commercial mentioned drafted names and one was Marcus Smart. My barber knows I’m a Laker fan, I said; “I wish the Lakers had drafted him.” My barber didn’t show me any sympathy stating; “he (Smart) was gone don’t cry about it.” I’m satisfied with the Julius Randle pick more on him later. Most of the draft experts had the Lakers picking either Smart or Dante Exum. Both Smart and Exum could be considered more combo than pure point guard; I believe the Nash era (if it ever existed) is over.
I’m unsure if this is Kendall Marshall’s team, or somebody else. I thought prior to the draft and still maintain my view the Lakers require a floor leader (besides Kobe). I certainly don’t want to appear trashing future Hall of Fame guard Nash. The problem in his two years with the team Nash has barely seen the floor due to injuries. Adding to the negativity is Nash himself stating; “I’m in it (Lakers) for the money” certainly is not viewed in the best light with some Laker fans. In closing as for Randle I’m okay with the pick, he should provide them an inside presence which was sorely lacking this past season.
An early season test
Have you had an opportunity to check out Kentucky’s non-con schedule? They will play Kansas, Texas, North Carolina, UCLA and Louisville prior to SEC play. Leading up to the NCAA selections a number of schools are criticized for their strength of schedule. Win or lose I don’t think anyone could complain about what Kentucky has done. This schedule will provide the Wildcats a test and certainly prepare them for the NCAA Tourney.
Jason Kidd
I held a conversation with a friend regarding the strange recent journey of Jason Kidd. My friend said; “Kidd didn’t know Larry Drew (former coach) had not been advised of being terminated in advance of Kidd‘s hire.” I agreed with him and stated a major portion of the finger pointing on the shoulders of Bucks management. Can I forgive Kidd of course, I can. Further can I forgive the inept manner of this termination and hire by management of course. I certainly wouldn’t assign a percentage however Kidd shares blame too. This change was ego driven; Kidd wanted a hand in player personnel matters the Nets said no. One of the new Bucks owner had been a minority owner with the Nets, he and Kidd knew each other. I’m unsure who approached who first we know the ultimate outcome.
“The Polish Hammer”
At the time I sat down to write this story I believed Marcin Gortat was the first NBA player born in Poland. I was incorrect; research indicates he’s actually the fourth from Poland the best to date. Gortat arrived in the NBA with the Orlando Magic journeyed to Phoenix and finally to Washington. Playing for the Wizards “The Polish Hammer” became an important key to the team securing a playoff berth. His numbers were average (13.9 ppg and 9.5 rebounds) but it was on court presence that secured his future with the Wizards. Gortat was a free agent however the Wizards secured the continued services of this 6-11 240 pound center. The Wizards will sign Gortat to a 5-year contract valued at $60 million dollars.
Best conference
ESPN.com ran a series on the best college coaches in the nation. The poll found Billy Donovan (Florida) finishing number one and John Calipari (Kentucky) number two. I thought it interesting the SEC is viewed in several circles as a “football” conference. All other sports including basketball finish behind football in popularity. All that is required is to check NFL rosters, they are loaded with former SEC football talent. What I find interesting the ESPN poll claims the two best basketball coaches in the country are at football dominate SEC schools.
Which is true?
There is no method to confirm the Ramona Shelburne report short of the Lakers affirming it. Last Friday I detailed a claim by Brandon Tierney which may or may not be true. CBSSports radio host Brandon Tierney claimed “The Lakers have little room to sign free agents due to the Kobe contract.” ESPN’s Shelburne reported on Thursday; “The Lakers have offered Carmelo Anthony a 4-year $97 million dollar contract.” If her figures are even close to accurate it confirms for me Tierney’s statement is totally inaccurate. SI.com claims the Lakers have offered Anthony a 4-year $95 million dollar contract.
Is that all the money out there for Anthony, of course not? The Knicks can offer him the largest compensation package and it’s likely the Rockets, Mavs and Bulls can exceed the Laker offer too. The only exception is the Heat who plan on retaining the services of LeBron, Wade and Bosh. It’s possible even with Pat Riley’s skill the Heat may find it difficult to bankroll the trio and at the same time pay the amount of salary Anthony might command. For Tierney to state “they don‘t have the money is inaccurate and misleading.

Rumors
The pop music group Timex Social Club released a song titled “Rumors” in 1986. If you are unfamiliar with the group or too young to remember it check it out on YouTube. The song is the lead-in for this NBA story, I intend to wait “until the dust settles” before proceeding further. There are so many NBA free-agent scenarios floating about I cannot keep up with them, I believe it might be just as difficult for you. For this reason alone I’m going to wait until the signings begin later in the month before attempting updates.
NBA coaches
The landscape apparently has changed hiring NBA coaches. We could begin our assessment by checking Jason Kidd’s resume. Kidd was hired by the Nets with 0 years of head coaching experience, he was a point guard in the spring and head coach in the fall of the same year. Prior to the Kidd hire the Warriors signed Mark Jackson as head coach, this former guard arrived from the ABC/ESPN Networks. In addition Jackson had no previous coaching experience. In the fall this season Steve Kerr will be at the helm for the Warriors with no previous experience. The same for Derek Fisher who will assume head coaching duties with the Knicks.
Fisher followed Kidd in that he too retired in the spring and will be head man in the fall. There is no one aspect to uncover why the rush to hire head coaches with no prior experience. Maybe this is an effort to avoid the coaching merry go round that‘s existed in the past. Example the coach at franchise A is fired a year or so later franchise B hires that same coach. Veteran coaches George Karl, Lionel Hollins, Byron Scott and others sit and sit and sit. NOTE: Just as this was completed it was announced the Nets had named Lionel Holliins their head coach replacing Jason Kidd.
Bits n Pieces
The NBA’s television agreement expires after the 2015-16 season. It’s early yet the networks are lining up preparing to bid for broadcast rights. For now it appears CBS will not be a bidder for the broadcast however Fox Sports and NBC will be competing against the current broadcast team. ABC/ESPN and TNT are the present broadcast partners along with NBA TV. NBA TV is owned by the National Basketball Association however it operates from the Turner Sports Studios. According to Wikipedia NBA TV International a feed of NBA TV can be seen by 40 countries around the globe.
I would never ever hope for catastrophe to befall a player, coach or anyone. At the same time there have been instances this same group have conducted themselves in a manner I managed to hold a grudge. I confess I held an adverse view of LeBron James when he first left the Cavs, over the last few years I no longer hold that view. On my radar is Bucks Coach Jason Kidd, given time I will mellow on him too.
Win or loss Shane Battier intended to retire from the Heat as was noted several weeks back. He’s now signed a mult-year contract with ESPN and will become one of their college basketball analyst. Battier has always struck me as a cerebral guy; he should do well in his new role after basketball.
Talk about “are you on your way out of town.” The Rockets in an attempt to lure Carmelo Anthony had a poster of Anthony in a Rockets uniform complete with a number 7 jersey. That might be considered a dis on Jeremy Lin who remains a Rocket as this is written his jersey number 7.

I attempt to refrain from discussing salaries of athletes and coaches and there are two primary reasons. There are more however these come to mind for me:
A. Athletes (and coaches) salaries earn far more in salary than educators, police and fire officials. They provide us entertainment however they cannot educate our children or respond to any health and protection issues that might occur.
B. Information provided is not always accurate which leads to inaccurate conclusions. I’m unsure of you but I have seen several salary discrepancies depending on the site. Our conclusions could be totally inaccurate if we are using inaccurate information. Many of you might remember the early computer term: “Garbage in, garbage out.”
C. Not directly connected but we can add the sage of Jason Kidd in our money discussion. It’s been reported (unconfirmed) at least one reason for Kidd’s move to the Bucks was wait for it, wait for it------MONEY! Both Steve Kerr (Warriors) and Derek Fisher (Knicks) would be earning more that Kidd and neither had any previous coaching experience.
My wife’s cousin has no problem with Lebron James earning a max salary yet complains to me about Kobe’s salary. His compliant has spread too many in the media, I heard CBSSports radio host Brandon Tierney claim “The Lakers have little room to sign free agents due to the Kobe contract.” First for my cuz, I believe it’s appropriate to reward a player for his (or her) past accomplishments. It’s not always intended for that player’s future contribution. As for the radio guy he’s only partially correct, the Lakers have cap room to sign free agents period. Would they be capable of signing LeBron, Carmelo and pay Kobe? I seriously doubt they could sign all three, I believe they could sign one and afford to pay Kobe too. Pat Riley holds no monopoly on the ability to be creative in signing players.

He’s got another job
We can and should always seek employment if we desire. The circumstances of the hire can be quite bizarre on occasion---this is one of them. In a strange and unusual move the Nets Jason Kidd suddenly wanted out. The Nets front office gave him permission to converse with the Bucks. The next bit of information provided stated the Bucks had hired Kidd as head coach. Whoa just a minute don’t the Bucks already have a head coach? Yes and no, the bizarre part they fired Larry Drew once they announced Kidd was the new coach; he was traded to the Bucks for two second round draft choices. We discovered Kidd wanted player input with the Nets which they supposed to have said no. Although there is no word if the Bucks have granted Kidd the player personal wish it appears that might be the case.
I‘m borrowing from John Finestein sportswriter; “Kidd has violated the coaching allegiance, you don‘t get anyone fired in order to take their job.” We realize the Bucks have a new ownership group in place but firing Drew after just one year tops the bizarre list. Understand this Kidd leaves an old team that made the playoffs to one (promising) that won only 15 games this past season. I wanted to research and determine if any similar story had occurred anywhere in the sports world. The nearest similar incident might have occurred in major league baseball. The Cleveland Indians had a General Manager named Frank Lane who was notorious for player trades, he even once traded managers. *“In 1960 during his tenure with the Indians, he (Lane) swapped manager Joe Gordon in exchange for Detroit Tiger skipper Jimmy Dykes" Wikipedia
“There’s no place like home”
Derrick Rose was drafted by his hometown Chicago Bulls, Nick Young wasn’t drafted but managed to wear the jersey of the Clippers and Lakers, Los Angeles is home. As for others Denver native Chauncey Billups played first at Colorado and the Nuggets on two separate occasions. Udonis Haslem has never left the State of Florida, just kidding folks. He was born in Miami, played at Florida and with the exception of one years play in Europe he’s spent his career playing for the Heat. Indianapolis’s George Hill returned to play for the Pacers after being originally drafted by the Spurs.
His bio is similar to Haslem he didn’t venture too far to attend college, IUPUI was his choice. If you are unfamiliar with the initials of Hill’s school its Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. Cleveland was not home for LeBron James but Akron 50 miles or south is his birthplace and former home town. There are others who may have been omitted but I wanted to provide you background for this account. Often it might appear a player is not pleased with his destination in the case of Jabari Parker he probably was pleased. The Bucks made this Chicago native the second pick in the 2014 draft. Milwaukee is not home for Parker but its only 100 miles north from his home town of Chicago.
The statement is asinine
Leftover kaw-kaw from the NBA Championship, I’m a little surprised at Kevin Durant calling out Kwahi Leonard. It probably wasn’t intended to be mean-spirited but it appeared to be. How the question originated is unknown I’m only responding to the Durant answer. “They (Spurs) run no plays for Leonard.” From all indications Durant’s statement is most likely correct. On the other hand this has always been my belief, isn’t it more important for Leonard (or anyone else) to ready to score a basket(s) when called on? A further point for Durant and anyone else, below average games one and two didn’t prevent Leonard from becoming series MVP. He averaged 17.8 ppg shooting .612 from the field and .579 from the 3-point line. Leonard’s number might not have been called but he was ready and apparently able.
“It must be the shoes”
The exclamation “must be the shoes” was echoed by Mars (Spike Lee) Blackmon in a series of Michael Jordan Nike commercials. This was prior to MJ having his own brand of Nike’s. In any event the news is the Jordan brand has signed another one, hours prior to the draft Jabari Parker Chicago native and new Buck inked a contract. The dollar amount was not provided; he joins new Jazz guard Dante Exum who signed with Adidas earlier in the year. Shoe contracts will make both players wealthy prior to either sitting foot on an NBA court.
“It‘s old but I’m not sure if it’s practical”
I’d mentioned to an acquaintance Kansas City officials were debating how to best utilize Kemper Arena. His response to my statement; “I thought they had torn it (Kemper) down already. “ The story of Kemper Arena in Kansas City is certainly interesting. The arena was built specifically as a host building for the American Royal. The Royal is an annual horse and livestock and rodeo. In addition Kemper allowed the Kings to move from tiny (10,000) Municipal Auditorium to a 17,500 seat arena in 1974. Fast forward, in 2007 the city opened the new Sprint Center. The Sprint Center became a regular destination due to its more easily accusable location. It might be added with AEG managing the building a steady venue of top notch concerts became the norm.
Gradually over the years a number of events gradually moved from Kemper to the Sprint Center. After by-passing Kansas City for a number of years the NBA now visits regularly for pre-season games. Two proposals have been placed before the city council, one calling for demolishing the building and the other a usage change. In other parts of the nation the old arena no longer in continuous use has seen the wrecking ball. Reunion Arena in Dallas once home to the Mavs no longer exists and so do several others. As this was completed the problem might be resolved, Kemper is being considered as a historical building.
