Injuries
We can exclude Kobe Bryant from the discussion he’ll turn 37 in August and has a great deal of NBA, Olympic and FIBA mileage on his body. As for the others I’m unsure. It seems there have been a higher number of season ending injuries in the NBA this season than I can remember. In the first game of the season Laker rookie Julius Randle went out with a season ending injury before he could begin his career, others would follow. Josh McRoberts Heat, Tony Wroton 76ers, Alec Burks Jazz. My choice for Rookie of the Year Jabari Parker of the Bucks also went down. .
The Cavs suffered as a team particularly after losing Anderson Varejao, although the Nets Mirza Teletovic is loss for the season its health related rather than an injury.
Recently Pistons guard Brandon Jennings sustained a season ending injury. We held court on this subject in the barber shop a few weeks back. One of the barbers identified the problem as the shoes. I’m sure it’s likely something other than the shoes however the question is relevant. Basketball players of this era are better conditioned than ever yet have succumbed to injury at the same rate of their predecessors. Losing these players to season ending injury has affected each of these NBA teams.
Bits n Pieces
With LeBron James on the sidelines Kyrie Irving led his Cavs team to a victory over the Blazers. 99-94. Irving scored 55 points with 5 assists 4 rebounds and 2 steals. In 39 minutes of court work he only had 3 TO’s.
After the Klay Thompson scoring explosion I held a brief discussion with a friend.
I informed him; “I’m going to research fathers whose sons also played in the NBA.”
Fathers and sons, current Laker broadcaster Mychal and father of Klay played in the NBA. You were already aware Kobe’s dad Joe played for the 76ers. The number of father and sons playing pro ball surprised me. If we count the NBL (predecssor to the NBA) and ABA the total is much higher than most of us might believe, I ceased counting when I reached 20.
The rosters for the annual McDonald’s All-Star game are set. The game will be held at the United Center in Chicago 9:00 p.m. Eastern Time April 1. The number one prospect in the nation Ben Simmons will display his talent in the game; Simmons is head to LSU in the fall. Simmons is a 6-9 225 pound power forward. He will play alongside future teammate Antonio Blakeney 6-4 shooting guard from Orlando (FL). Both athletes are 5-star prospects by Rivals.
Are the rules different for Notre Dame athletics? I ask the question because the Fighting Irish football team is not conference affiliated. As for basketball that’s a different matter. They moved into the ACC two years ago after competing in the Big East Conference for several years. Without checking I believe Notre Dame might be the university playing an independent football schedule yet conference affiliated in basketball.
He’s good
According to his bio Bill Russell was a 6-10 215 pound center, we know the balance of the story as he led the Celtics to numerous championships. He was expert at blocking opposition shots rebounding the basketball, occasionally he’d be called on to score. The Pelicans Anthony Davis is a 6-10 220 pound power forward we know the early portion of his story too. He was a 6-3 sophomore guard who grew into a 6-10 high school senior. He would win an NCAA championship at Kentucky and depart after his freshman year for the NBA. His pattern of play was established at Kentucky however it’s become improved in the NBA.
Davis has become an expert at blocking opposition shots rebounding the basketball; he is a much better shooter than Russell. Before your head explodes I’m not stating Davis is anywhere close to Russell. Russell had a 13 year NBA with numerous MVP awards and NBA championships as mentioned above. As for Davis he is just entering his third year and the Pelicans are yet to win their first championship. He should receive MVP consideration for his 2014-15 NBA season. He’s certainly not Bill Russell however his game might come nearest to number 6. The only other athlete who might come close is the Clippers DeAndre Jordan although he’s a couple of rungs below Davis.

Sometimes you hear a statement that causes you to laugh out loud. For you George Karl fans this is about your main man. The other day in his role as a studio analyst I heard him state a team “didn’t play defense.” I almost fell off my chair laughing, I asked myself the question did any George Karl team ever play defense? Okay the guy has a winning career record but so does Mike D’Antoni.
The arena inside Municipal Auditorium is one the oldest bastions of basketball still in continuous use. Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis (IA) and The Palestra in Philadelphia are the only arenas I believe are older. The “Muni” as it’s nicknamed originally opened in 1935 and has undergone renovations in 2007 and 2013. The University of Missouri-Kansas City men's team has moved back to the Muni after several years playing games on campus. The 7,300 close in seats also serves as host for the annual NAIA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
I believe I might be unfair in my criticism at times. That is the case with Chris Bosh, I never called him a bum I just wasn’t impressed with his game. In retrospect I didn’t see much of his game at the time he played for the Raptors. It seemed at times he was the only lost soul of the “Big Three.” Now that LeBron’s in Cleveland Bosh has proven to me he can play---sorry Chris.
Warrior sharpshooter Klay Thompson scored 37 points in the third quarter of the game. That output led him to score a total of 52 points. I’m sure his arm required icing after the game. Thompson broke the scoring record of 33 points in a quarter set by George Gervin and tied by Carmelo Anthony.

He can play
He just can’t play for Washington or Fresno State for that matter. The larger question can he play in the NBA? Robert Upshaw might be a name unfamiliar to a number of you. His name is well-known by NBA scouts, limited offensively his shot-blocking skill was going to be a key to an NBA career. The question becomes is the NBA in Upshaw’s future? The 7-foot 250 pound Upshaw has been dismissed by Washington Coach Lorenzo Romar.
First it was Fresno State now Washington the second time from a Division I program. The statement was brief “violation of team rules.” At this point we have no idea where he stands in the eyes of NBA scouts, certainly talent exists within him. The problem would appear to be his head. Will an NBA team be willing to take a chance of him come June? That question and others will remain unanswered at least for now.
“The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”
You might be thinking of the classic 1967 Clint Eastwood movie yet that’s not the account in this story. This is a short account of Jack Molinas whose shadow in some instances still looms over college basketball. Almost anytime point shaving or the prospect of it existing many reflect on an earlier era. In this instance the time period is the late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s a far different time than today. Those who came in contact with Molinas today would probably not suffer the consequences of Connie Hawkins, Roger Brown and others. Who was Jack Molinas; the 6-6 Molinas was a talented basketbal player who set scoring records at New York’s Stuyvesant High and later at Columbia University.
How exceptional was Molinas you ask, he was skilled enough to become the 4th pick in the first round of the 1953 NBA draft. He was drafted by the Fort Wayne (IN) Pistons who would move to Detroit in 1957. An investigation later revealed Molinas had bet on games while in college, he would be banned for life by the NBA and only played the one season. This would not be the last of Molinas he would remain around the game for years. Gambling and criminal pursuits would follow him the balance of his life. An investigation uncovered another point shaving scandal similar to one in the late ‘40’s. He wasn’t the only culprit however Molinas stood out along with college players Connie Hawkins and Roger Brown.
There were other players however those two names were most often mentioned having links to Molinas. As for Hawkins it was revealed Molinas had once provided the impoverished Hawkins $250. Molinas claimed later he never asked Hawkins to shave any points. Roger Brown’s story paralleled Hawkins except no money ever changed hands although he was acquainted with Molinas there was never any indication of financial gain on his part. Both players met him while high school prospects, their penalty without any trial dismissal from college and banned for life by the NBA although Hawkins was a freshman and Brown was on his way to college. In both instances there never was a “smoking gun” however the NCAA and NBA acted in a manner they would later regret. Hawkins and Brown would toil in various minor pro leagues and the ABA for a number of years; they would later sue the NBA and win their case and be awarded damages.
Hawkins would play the later portion of his career in the NBA while Brown chose to remain with the ABA Pacers. Much later Hawkins and Brown would be honored being enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Brown’s Hall of Fame induction would come after his death in 1996 of liver cancer, he was 54. As for Molinas this from Wikipedia. ^“Molinas was convicted for his role in the scheme and sentenced to 10-15 years in prison, of which he served five years. Molinas was said to have contacts with New York City mobster Thomas Eboli. He was murdered in 1975 in an apparent mob hit.”

His full name is Michael William Krzyzewski nicknamed Mike. Those of us who have difficulty spelling his name simply refer to him as Coach K. Coach K. has been served as Duke’s head coach since 1980. This past weekend he set a record which may be difficult to impossible to equal. His Duke team beat St. John’s which resulted in the coach winning game 1,000. He’s been the poster-boy for winning basketball but it’s not always been that way. After a successful coaching start at Army he was hired by Duke to coach their basketball team. For those who were not aware Coach K.’s first three years left little impression on the basketball world.
Duke’s 17-13 record was followed by 10-17 and then 11-17 two losing records in a row. In today’s climate a coach would be history, we have an example here. The media is full of complaints regarding Mizzou’s Kim Anderson in his first year. Winning 1,000 games is a personal accomplishment but it also reflects on the administration of Duke. The honors have been too numerous to count, just a few 4X NCAA winning coach, inducted in the Naismith Hall of Fame and the College Basketball Hall of Fame. In addition a gold medal winning Olympic and FIBA coach. There was no rush to judgment because the coach failed to win in a timely manner.

He said what?
I admit it I’m the problem; I quit watching ESPN’s First Take for days. I do this because much of the time the point-counterpoint discussions between Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless are often plain dumb. Despite knowing better once again I switched the channel to First Take wondering what type of enlightment I was going to receive. The portion I viewed centered on NBA All Star voting. The league office announced the results of fan voting. Steph Curry manged to receive the most votes exceeding the total cast for LeBron James.
I’m paraphrasing Smith’s comment but much of it is accurate as possible. The irrepressible Smith said; “Curry beat out LeBron because LeBron is no longer in Miami. If LeBron had been in Miami the numbers would have been reversed.” Smith went on to compare the weather, winter in Cleveland versus the warmth of South Beach. Smith further stated “LeBron is still the best player in the NBA.” I have no idea why a larger number of voters chose Curry over LeBron. I believe it has nothing to do with the best player in the NBA or what city that player toils in. What do you think; I love healthy debate stupid debate is another story.
It’s a different country
Wichita and the immediate surrounding area might be the only portion of Kansas that believes. Goodland to Lansing, Dodge City to Liberal and all locations in between all believe the best college basketball in the state is played in Lawrence. I might point out many in and around Wichita might politely disagree with you. Those folks and others believe the Shockers are the preeminent team in Kansas. There is a misconception regarding Wichita State basketball this is the problem as I see it. A. Wichita State is considered a mid-major or non-BCS school. That’s pure manure the ball bounces the same way in Allen Field house (Kansas) as it does in Charles Koch Arena (Wichita).
B. The belief by many Wichita State only began winning under Coach Gregg Marshall which is untrue. Check the basketball history of Wichita State the schools won-loss record since its beginning in 1905 is well above .500. Unlike the Kansas Jayhawks the Shockers have suffered through several periods where team performance was below par. Often winning teams produced a step up for former retired Coach Eddie Fogler and Mark Turgeon current Maryland coach. Coach Gregg Marshall arrived from Winthrop six years ago and his first Wichita State team finished 11-20, his second year they went 17-17. Since then he’s led the Shockers to 25+ wins every season, as this is completed they are 15-2 and ranked the number 13 team in the nation.
Bits n Pieces
Brian White may be a name unfamiliar to a number of you. White’s acting career has seen him play a number of characters in movies and television. Most recently he’s been seen on television’s Hawaii Five-0 and Major Crimes. As for movie roles he was in Mr. 3000, The Family Stone and Stomp the Yard. White once played for the Patriots of the NFL however he has a basketball connection. He’s the son of former Celtic great Jo Jo White.
What do I know it didn’t see what others did? The Warriors released revised diagrams of their planned San Francisco arena. What I didn’t see, many expressed belief the original design resembled a toilet bowl. After I looked at it again I thought I guess it might resemble a bowl. I had to view the drawing a second time and after fans pointed to what I couldn’t see. I’m sure if you Google it you can locate the original plus the revised design. You check out the original and decide for yourself.
Credibility
Does the NFL have a credibility issue? I say no way; whatever occurs off the field and sometimes on it appears to concern NFL fans. The league has experienced a serious image problem since February 2014, Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson and Ray McDonald in no particular order. The missteps by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in handling the Rice suspension. It appeared the NFL failed to fully investigate the Rice assault. At the same time they had no clue what domestic violence was all about. The problems continued with a series of on the field problems.
Pass interference in the Cowboys-Lions game that’s initially flagged and then over ruled. Cowboy Dez Bryant scoring a touchdown against the Packers which was voided. We have no idea if this next account is the last but just the latest, it’s “Deflate-gate” as the media has dubbed it. The Pats have been accused of deflating the footballs used in the AFC Championship game. Again this is a basketball blog however I must voice a complaint. The series of bad media appears to have little affect on NFL fans, yet this view doesn’t exist all over. Appalling news regarding the NBA or college basketball seems to go on and on and on---why? Example; NBA teams tanking (losing) games on purpose.

There is a distinction between lack of talent and lack of effort!
I only read the headline
It read “Torn Rotator Cuff” or at least that’s what we believe. I have been solidly behind Kobe Bryant and his attempt at a return from injury. This latest setback says he should retire, I realize that’s shocking for me to say but it’s the truth as I see it.
Forbes says
They may be in the bottom of the NBA standings elsewhere they are number one. Number one in what area you might inquire? Franchise value, as for the figure Forbes sets the value of the Lakers at $2.6 billion dollars. The Knicks are in second place with a net worth of $2.5 billion. The Clippers purchased last year by Steve Ballmer are valued at $1.6 billion placing them in fifth place. Despite their shortcomings on the court the Lakers and Knicks franchise are still highly valued in the eyes of Forbes.
Dishing the rock
I'm guilty of placing far too much emphasis on scoring baskets. True if you can’t out score the other guy you lose however there is more to the game than simply scoring. The Pistons Brandon Jennings had a 21-assist game against the Magic. This is the first time in two years the NBA had a player with 20 or more assists. You think 21 assists is a lofty number for a single game? It is outstanding however it only places Jennings in 35th place. The all-time single game record for assist is held by Scott Skiles while a member of the Magic. He dished out 30 assists in a December 1990 game.
He belongs in the group too
I saw a promo the other day on the history of Kansas basketball, in the television ad several coaches were mentioned however one name was excluded. The missing name was that of Ted Owens who served as head coach from 1964 through 1983. Owens became head coach after serving as an assistant for Dick Harp. We could state with a degree of certainty Owens have been the forgotten men in relation to Kansas basketball.
We might make the same statement about Harp except he resigned after eight years on the job. Owens won almost 400 games (348) while he was head of the program in addition he is the fourth all-time winning coach at the school. I believe few know of Owens because he was fired. The last four years Owens was at the helm the Jayhawks finished 15-14, 24-8, 13-14 and 13-16. Succeeding coaches Larry Brown, Roy Williams and Bill Self never experienced losing records. Of course Brown and Self turned out NCAA Championship teams.
Where are they now
The Eastern Michigan Eagles upset the Michigan Wolverines 45-42 recently. I thought for a moment; “didn’t George Gervin attend Eastern?” My research confirmed George Gervin did indeed attend the school. He left school to play for the Virginia Squires but the time was short lived, few teams no longer in existence can claim to of its player in the Hall of Fame. Yes Virginia, the Squires at one point in time had Julius “Dr J. “Erving and George “Iceman” Gervin on their roster. You know the Dr. J. history as for Gervin he was traded to the ABA Spurs and remained with the team as it entered the NBA. Today Gervin continues to live and work in the San Antonio community; he’s involved with seven organizations dealing with high risk children. Gervin was also selected to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team.
The NBA in Europe
I’m viewing the game between the Knicks and Bucks played in England. The thought of NBA in Europe crossed my mind once again. The lower portion of the arena appears quite full so there are certainly NBA fans in attendance. One of the complaints I read on the NBA in Europe was not travel but lack of NBA ready arenas in Europe. That certainly appears to not be the case with the O2 Arena in London. According to information I was able to gather O2 seats 20,000 for basketball. The arena served as the basketball venue during the London Olympics.
One other note the architect firm that designed the building is Populus (now HOK) a Kansas City based firm. Commissioner Silver indicates rather than one or two teams “A (European) Division must be created rather than one or two teams, the travel time and adequate rest must be taken into consideration.”’ Just in case you wondered about my position I agree with the commissioner. An NBA team in London, Berlin, Madrid and Moscow and a couple of other locations could work.

There is a distinction between lack of talent and lack of effort!
-------Larry Laker
I‘d be okay how about you?
A wild rumor has begun circulating; Kobe for Charles, the story has Charles Barkley leaving TNT in 2016. Barkley would be replaced by the retired Kobe Bryant. Personally I would have no issue if this change would occur and not for the reasons you might believe. Over the last several years Barkley has worn out his welcome with yours truly. He would become “the mouth that roared” with views often ranging far beyond basketball. Was/is Barkley entitled to express his political and social views on any subject matter? Of course that’s his prerogative and any other person. I believe replacing Barkley the focus of the telecast and his sound bits would return basketball where it belongs. He's caused me to boycott half-time and
post-game programming, I mute the sound or change the channel.
?????
I want someone to sit down with me and explain re-classification. If a high student has enough units or credits they are eligible to graduate that part of the puzzle is simple. You’ve discovered as I have high school players of this era “move up or move down” dependent on input from a parent/guardian or the advice of an AAU coach. I’m not sure who is making the decisions for 7-1 Thon Maker however his “strange” journey continues. The youngster was originally born in Sudan but was partially raised in Australia. As a teen he arrived in the U.S., it gets better after first attending school in Louisiana he transferred to Carlisle High School in Virginia. He now plays for Orangeville Prep in Orangeville (Toronto) Canada.
Maker is considered the number one prospect in the Class of 2017 if he re-classifies he’ll move to the top for 2016. The ESPN Recruiting page pointed out an extraordinary fact. “He’s (Maker) living in his fourth country and attending his third high school in three seasons. Why? Where will he go next?” The only move that might not be scrutinized is the one that took him from Sudan to Australia. As many are aware that African nation has suffered turmoil for several years now. The other moves three high schools in three years certainly are certainly questionable. Bottom line the P-O-T-E-N-T-I-A-L of this prospect are unlimited college scouts have followed his progress since he was in middle school.
Expansion again---really?
This story is football related however if the conference approves expansion basketball and other athletic programs would follow. It was believed the change from BCS to a selection committee would resolve any issues in deciding an NCAA football champion. Despite the change controversy reigned again; Big 12 teams Baylor and TCU were left out of the playoff picture. One of the primary reasons given the Big 12 has no conference playoff thus clarifying the exclusion. Whether it makes sense or not the fix appears to be expansion rather than a playoff. The conference is exploring adding two schools Cincinnati and BYU. Forget the fact neither school is in the Midwest Time Zone the geographical location of a school no longer factors into the decision.
I hope we are proven correct
No argument from me I believed Julius Randle was talented. We witnessed evidence of this gift in the year he played at Kentucky. My only concern was a lefty without a right hand however he’s only 19-years old. A fan made this statement; “the 6-9 250 pound power forward is a combination of Lamar Odom and Z-Bo” (Zach Randolph). This is far too early to pronounce Randle is equipped to play at this level however many of us believe he will prove to be a valuable addition to the Lakers.
If he can fully implement the talent we believe he’s exhibited he will be the leader after Kobe retires. NOTE: This was written prior to Randle’s untimely injury, I believe he will still fulfill the promise hoped. We can look toward Laker great James Worthy; Big Game James broke his leg his rookie year yet returned to a HOF career. This is no prediction of that type of career for Randle but who really knows the future?
Basketball in the State of Missouri
A large number of universities and colleges exist in the State of Missouri however only five compete athletically at the D-1 level. I wonder the odds on all five programs to experience losing or near losing records in the same year. Well that’s exactly what’s occurred as the calendar has turned from December to January. I’m watching Missouri State (Springfield) losing to Northern Iowa. It’s likely they lose the game which would leave them with an 8-10 record. How about the other Division One programs in the state? Southeast Missouri record (Cape Girardeau) stand 9-10. The Billikens of St Louis University stand 9-9 as this is written. How about the University of Mo-Kansas City, the Kangaroos are a 6-13 team. In conclusion the Mizzou Tigers are 7-10 and not playing at the level we expected. I didn’t check Missouri D-II, D-III or NAIA schools surely there is a winner among them.

Heard this conversation?
“There is no need of playing the regular season college teams play to get into the NCAA’s.” I heard this statement the other day from a radio host and thought this guy can’t be for real. If you’ve followed the college game any length of time you realize the NCAA Tournament has certainly risen in the eyes of fans. Once upon a time the field of eligible teams was smaller and only weekend games were telecast. The advent of ESPN and other cable channels allowed for significant change.
Initially early games were strictly a cable event and a single channel. In recent years coverage has expanded from A to Z. CBS, TNT, True Network are just a few of the added telecast venues. In several instances you are now able to follow your favorite team from 64 down to the Final Four. It’s my belief (and I could be wrong) as the NCAA has increased the numbers of eligible teams it’s caused the older NIT to no longer hold the prestige it once had. In conclusion I don’t agree with the view teams “only play to get into the field of 64.”
Did you figure on Jan 18?
Kansas State (4-1) would sit above Kansas (3-1) in the Big 12 standings. A week or so ago it appeared Kansas State was on the verge of an implosion especially between the coach and the best player on the team.
Despite sweeping both Los Angeles teams the Cavs record reads 21-20. The poor record is more than LeBron James absence from the lineup. Remember that old Temptations song; “Standing on Shaky Ground” could best describe the status of Coach Blatt.
We knew Virginia would be good but few believed they would be 17-0. We figured Kentucky might be undefeated (17-0) but Virgina? The Cavaliers are much better than most of us expected or believed.
What’s up with the Atlanta Hawks? They are always good but 33-8 and the best winning record in the NBA who figured. This team was expected to be good however they have exceeded expectations of everybody except----themselves maybe.
Bits n Pieces
In some circles Dick Vitale is heavily criticized, “they say” he doesn’t address controversial issues. I believe if he really desired to touch on those issues he would do so. He’s a cheerleader for the college game he’s not Jay Bilas who often will speak to hot button topics. I listen to both men because I believe they provide us a wealth of basketball knowledge.
This argument might not be valid since the NBA plays far more road games than colleges. I believe it’s more difficult for a good college team to win on the road than a good NBA team. Example both teams healthy it’s unlikely the Warriors lose to the Wolves or 76ers on the road. Texas A&M forced two overtimes and almost defeated Kentucky at College Station, NC State handled number two Duke rather easily at home.
I’m disappointed; in fact I turned off the game at the half. I tuned into the Mizzou-Tennessee game hoping for a Mizzou win. For much of the first half Mizzou players appeared to play the game in quicksand. There were slow to react, I really have no idea how many shots they missed in the second half they missed plenty in the first portion. I thought playing in Columbia surely the Tigers win; it was not to be they were losers 59-51
I know this is me however I continue to believe sports nicknames belong to one athlete only. The local media continues referring to Royals pitcher James Shields as “Big Game.” That nickname belongs to Laker great James Worthy only it cannot and should not be used by another (my unwritten law).
In the footsteps of the father
A number of sons have followed their fathers into an NBA career; the degree of success has varied. Rick Barry was a topnotch player in the NBA and ABA, two of his sons managed to play in the NBA but with limited success. We could say the same regarding Michael Jordan; both played in college but were not talented enough to play in the association. The one exception might be the Bryant’s; Joe “Jellybean” Bryant was good however Kobe’s career has certainly been superior. Doc Rivers was a point guard for the Hawks and a number of NBA teams during his 13-year career, as for son Austin we are unsure if he is as good as Doc. Austin was the 10 pick in the first round of the 2012 draft by the Hornets/Pelicans and gained a permanent spot on the bench.
The Clippers recently acquired guard Austin in a trade. I admit I haven’t had an opportunity to see him play much except in college. If he couldn’t play for the developing Pelicans we might question how much he can contribute for the Clippers except in a reserve role? After young Rivers declared for the NBA draft I begin reading scouting reports two which didn’t paint a positive picture of him. One scout wrote; “Rivers often displayed a swagger (at Duke) that didn’t match his production.” This from another; “He’s got a lot of maturing to do said a Southwest Division scout. It’s gonna be interesting to see how he handles an NBA locker room. Guys aren’t gonna care who he is.” As you can see I find the acquisition of Austin Rivers puzzling except for the tact he’s Doc’s son but perhaps that’s the key.

Twitter surveyed it’s users to determine which NBA teams they followed. Surprise, surprise areas of the U.S. without an NBA presence the Lakers have the largest following. The survey also included our northern neighbor Canada where the Raptors are the clear leaders which is understandable. As for this nation I thought it quite interesting seeing purple on large portions of 49 states (Hawaii was not included). . The study has no scientific merit however it is interesting, if you want to check it out see the latest Bleacher Report.
They could have been suspended
Dayton basketball now has no player on its roster taller than 6-6. Once upon a time they had two 6-9 centers one a starter the other his backup. Neither of these centers is on the team and they are not injured. Coach Archie Miller dismissed them after they were caught stealing money from a dorm. Miller is to be applauded based on the climate that exists in much of athletic institutions today. How often do we see an athlete suspended for a game (or two) and then be returned to the active roster. Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston is not the only guilty party however he might be the prime example of coddling athletes. A few athletes have poor decision making ability, not only can their action because troubling consequences form the athlete they reflect poorly on the academic institution.
For sale
Once again word circulated Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov has the team on the market. It’s my understanding he owns in the neighborhood of 70% to 80% of the team. Bruce Ratner also owns a percentage of the team too. The last NBA franchise for sale was the Clippers last season. A number of you might remember what occurred with that sale media reports indicate there was a bidding frenzy. At least two groups one including Oprah Winfrey attempted to purchase the Clippers. The sale price of the Clippers kept going up and up, when the sale price was finally revealed most of us were in a state of shock.
Former chief executive officer of Microsoft Steve Ballamer was the winner with a reported high bid say it with me in your Dr. Evil voice------$2 billion dollars. Come on, if you don’t know who Dr. Evil is I don’t know what to say. The Hawks are for sale too however to date no information on a sale price has been mentioned. Back to the Nets a moment, on the court this team is nowhere close to the Clippers in talent but there is another factor. Although the front of the jersey says “Brooklyn” this is a New York team for sale which commands more dollars than the Bucks. It was reported the sale of the Clippers only involved Donald Sterling and family with the Nets there are at least two possibly three owners. Stay tuned for future developments of this story.
They accomplished the expected
The headline on the ESPN.com college page read; “No. 1 Kentucky routs Mizzou.”
Embarrassing as the loss was I expected it; 86-37 certainly qualifies as a rout. This morning on talk radio the host said he was embarrassed for Coach Kim Anderson with the loss. He said; “It was worse than losing to UMKC the first game of the season. “ I guess this was glass half-full half empty view of Mizzou basketball. As I said I never want a loss but anticipated this one. I never expected them to lose to UMKC under a new coach attempting to build a program.
Still one of my main men
Speaking of Mizzou I turned on the television when I arrived home; I began my search for a game to watch. Although there was more than one game available I settled on the
Houston-Tulsa match. I was probably one of but a few Mizzou fans who were sorry to see Haith leave. At the time Mike Anderson departed for Arkansas I felt no loss, I believed despite his pronouncements Anderson was probably always “looking.”
As for Haith I think he saw the handwriting on the wall. The bulk of his offense left for the NBA in addition many in the Mizzou family had a problem with his Miami history. Mizzou’s administration announced Haith was their man however I’m not sure how serious they were. I don’t root for Arkansas because they are an SEC rival in addition Anderson is the coach. As for Tulsa I will root for them because of Haith.
He could have given up on life
We have no idea if the Bulls will win the NBA Championship, at this point we don’t even know if they will win the east. Those are unknowns, we know Bulls shooting guard Jimmy Butler is an ever improving talent. Entering his fourth year his average is at an all-time high (21.6) as this is written. It’s been documented the 6-7 220 pound athlete could have checked out in life early and we all could understand why. His father abandoned the family when he was an infant; at the age of 13 his mother kicked him out of their Tomball Texas home.
His bio indicates he lived with various friends throughout his high school years. As we fast forward through his life we discover Butler made his way to Tyler (TX) Jr. College not being heavily recruited out of high school. He headed to Marquette University for the next three years; in 2011 the Bulls made him the 30th pick in the first round of the draft. What motivates a person, Butler had every opportunity to give up on life believing he’d been dealt a bad hand. We have no idea what sustained him on his upward life path to date he‘s given no indication. So as you can see this is the NBA’s “Blindside.”

No “Heidi Bowl” repeat
Stop me if you’ve heard this one or witnessed it first hand. Apparently in several markets CBS cut into the Texas A&M-Kentucky basketball game with a little over a minute left in the first overtime. Viewers were treated to a re-run of the Andy Griffith Show. Someone at the network realized the error and returned to the game. Kentucky would overcome poor play and win the game 70-64 in the second overtime. In 1968 New York Jets fans were not quite as fortunate as this type of error prevented them from seeing the end of a Jets-Raiders game.
The Jets were leading the Raiders 32-29 NBC was committed to broadcast the children’s classic Heidi. At 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time the network left the game and begins showing Heidi. The problem---the Raiders scored two touchdowns in a minutes and eventually win the game the game 43-32. The match was a road game for New York fans who believed there time won the game. Unfortunately that was not the case as fans later discovered their favorite team were losers. This broadcast fiasco event would be nicknamed the Heidi Bowl for obvious reasons. Happily CBS was able to correct its broadcast fiasco thus not suffer the criticism that NBA dealt with in 1968.
Check back with me on this
This is heresy on my part but here goes, I read the Lakers are considering sitting down Kobe after the All-Star break. The team offered this explanation they want to save the wear and tear on his body in order for him to come back next season. Here goes, on the one hand you know my feelings on Kobe I had no issues with him playing this season. He’s not the 20-year old Kobe he’s not even the 30-year old version of himself but he still has skill. At this particular time he’s the Lakers offense shutting him down hints as tanking and you know my feelings on that subject. On the other hand the Lakers are building a team preparing for post A.K. (after Kobe). In conclusion I’m still not sure I feel about this should it occur, check back with me in April.
Think about this for a moment
Recently I wrote Bucks ownership is working with city leaders to build a new arena for Milwaukee. It was mentioned previously new arenas are in the works for the Warriors and Kings. These “Palaces” are expensive as an example Barclays Center had a reported price tag of $1 billion dollars. Doug Gottlieb CBS Sports made a comment the other day which prompts this story. He said; “While an arena can be expensive it can host more events on more dates than a football stadium.” If a metro area has an NBA franchise there are 42 dates between October and April when an arena might be in use. If the team manages to make the playoffs even more dates are in use.
College teams sometimes utilize the same arena on occasion. That arena might be in operation for NCAA Regional play as well. In between those dates, circus, concerts and other events manage to fill out the calendar. What uses are there for a football stadium besides football? Once upon a time I attended a rock concert in Arrowhead Stadium however that’s rare here, maybe in other portions of the nation’s football stadiums might be in use for those types of events. This certainly is not indicated to point to the fact that more dollars are generated from arenas over stadiums. Generally speaking that NFL stadium is “open” on Sunday and on occasion Saturday’s but that’s about it.
Where are they now?
Anybody remember Michael “Sugar” Ray Richardson? Thanks to an ESPN report, my memory of him was jogged recently. Richardson had arrived in the NBA from the University of Montana a school that has produced few NBA players. He was the fourth pick in the first round of the 1978 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. Richardson was billed as the next Walt Frazier; he may have eclipsed Frazier if not for his drug dependency problems. At 6-5 and 190 pounds, Richardson was skilled enough to play both guard positions. The highlight of his NBA career may have been the 1984 NBA playoffs where he led his Nets to an upset win over the defending NBA Champion 76ers.
In 1986, the NBA banned Richardson for life having failed three drug tests. He headed to Europe where he managed to play for a number of teams before ending his pro career in France playing for AC Golfe-Juan-Vallauris in 2002. Although he only had an 8-year NBA career he was an NBA All-Star 4 of those years, 2X NBA All Defensive First Team and NBA steals leader 3X. Richardson was the NBA assist leader in the 1980 season. His career numbers are modest (14.8 ppg, 7 assists and 2.6 steals) yet the numbers could have been much greater if drugs had not provided an exit from the NBA. Today apparently clean and sober he is coaching the game he loves. He departed the London Lighting of the National Basketball League of Canada after leading them to two championships.

Slow news day and I fell for this story
"Who is better: Shawn Kemp or Blake Griffin?” I don’t know how many times I’ve argued it’s totally unfair to compare athletes who play in different eras. Changes in the ‘90’s game of Kemp versus the ‘00 of Griffin must certainly be taken into consideration. Kemp’s Sonics team played the Michael Jordan Bulls for the NBA Championship in 1996.
As for Blake his Clippers have never advanced past the Western Conference Finals. Do we point the finger of blame at the supporting cast? Was point guard Gary Payton’s play superior to that of Chris Paul? What about the coaching, should we consider of George Karl over that of Doc Rivers? How about Kemp's Sonics versus Griffin's Clippers which bench or starters were/are better. There is no acceptable method to factor in all the variables. I said at the beginning of this account this must have been a slow news day and unfortunately I fell for this story.

There is a distinction between lack of talent and lack of effort!
-------Larry Laker
I’ve decided to attend----hey where am I going?
Carlton Bragg has made his choice, the 6-9 220 pound forward is headed to Kentucky or possibly Kansas. Bragg is 5-star prospect from Cleveland Ohio and ranked the number 14 prospect in the Class of 2015 by Rivals. Among the schools contending for Bragg’s services were Kentucky, Kansas, Illinois, Arizona and UCLA. He may have been nervous at his press conference or it may have been a Freudian slip when he announced which school he’d chosen. He placed a KU cap on his head and announced he was headed to Kentucky. Realizing his mistake Bragg indicated Kansas was his school of choice. Here his original statement Coach Cal?
They fooled me again
I realize it’s still early but I once wrote Kansas would face stiff competition this season. Well so far I’m dead wrong, after touting the supposed strength of the Big 12 Kansas is at the top. TCU undefeated at one time has three losses all in conference play; Texas is 1-2 along with Baylor. Kansas State which has struggled upset Top 25 Oklahoma. As for the others Iowa State and West Virginia (at least now) appear to be the main threat to Kansas securing another Big 12 Championship.
The continued running of the table by Kansas over the years is testimony of Bill Self’s coaching and infusion of 5-star talent during this time. Only UCLA in the Alcindor/Walton/Wilkes day may have dominated a conference in a similar manner. I will wait and see how the conference race plays out, perhaps one of the teams I’ve overlooked may rise to the forefront although I have serious doubts.
New names
Last week I wrote of former players who were put forth an effort to become team owners. Recently NBA TV analyst Grant Hill announced he’s part of an ownership group attempting to purchase the Hawks. In addition Hill indicated Junior Bridgeman who was profiled last year is also part of the group. After retiring from the NBA Bridgeman became an entrepreneur in a variety of businesses. What’s an unknown at this point is if former Hawks player Dominique Wilkins is part of this group.
Expectations
Expectations for big men are greater than guards and small forward, which is the case for Keanau Post. Post a 6-11 270 pound center had a break-out game last Thursday against LSU. To state he plays for Mizzou might be somewhat of an exaggeration as he played sparingly last season under departed Coach Frank Haith. Post arrived in Columbia from Southwestern Illinois a junior college. The change in coaches brought no change in his playing status that is until LSU.
His 2.5 ppg average went up to 12 points, 2.7 rebounds increased to 7. This was not just an offensive effort by Post he also blocked 3 LSU shots. What I discovered most interesting his numbers against LSU are nearly identical to his Southwestern numbers. My expectations for him were not that high last season coming from junior college. Coach Kim Anderson has continued to praise the effort of Post although he was playing limited minutes. Post is certainly not headed to the NBA but might see more action in Mizzou’s front court.
Sad news
Over the weekend it was announced Roy Tarpley had died, he was only 50 years of age. His name might be unfamiliar to many of you he’s been out of the NBA and the spotlight for several years. The high point of his brief career might be 1986 when the 6-11 230 pound forward/center was chosen Sixth Man of the Year. From that point on his playing career had a number of starts and stops. Tarpley’s talent ceiling was unlimited however alcohol addition led to the downfall of his NBA career.
In 1994 Tarpley would receive a lifetime ban based on alcohol and a court-mandated aftercare program. To my knowledge one of only two men to receive this penalty. Tarpley continued to play the game in Europe, China and minor league teams in the US with success but never returned to the NBA. He played for the Michigan Mayhem (CBA) in 2005-06 in his last year. We can only look at his early career and say if only he‘d been stronger. It’s not just the Roy Tarpley’s of the world we could make the same statement about the stockbroker or educator or anyone who succumbs to addition whatever the drug.
Its easy right?
We’ve been hearing the same chatter since the beginning of the college basketball season. “Will (can) Kentucky go through the season undefeated?” You think it’s gonna be easy, all that’s necessary they need to win their next 16 SEC conference games. Then the SEC tourney and finally the NCAA tourney, its easy right? If you had an opportunity to view the Kentucky-Ole Miss game you saw the Wildcats were forced into overtime at home before winning their match 89-86. As this is written Texas A&M is giving the Wildcats fits but finally prevailed in overtime 70-64. See how easy it is for Kentucky to go through the balance of the season undefeated.

Players becoming owners
Retired Hawk player and current executive vice-president Dominique Wilkins wants to purchase the Hawks. He’s not the only former player desiring to own an NBA team, we can add Kevin Garnett’s name to list. In the case of Garnett his desire is also to become the owner of the Wolves the team that drafted him and where he spent the bulk of his career. Magic Johnson owned a percentage of the Lakers until he sold it in order to purchase the Dodgers. Michael Jordan purchased the Hornets (Bobcats) from Bob Johnson several years ago and is the single proprietor. NOTE: After this was written it was announced the Hawks franchise was on the market. The original indication was only Bruce Levenson’s 50.1% share would be sold.
The Pistons?
Was Josh Smith the culprit for the Pistons poor play? Disgruntled players can be a contributing factor however it’s still a T-E-A-M game. I find it interesting once the Pistons released him the team began playing better. A broadcaster on ESPN said; “They haven’t played anybody during their winning streak.” I say horse-pokey, as a Laker fan anytime you win more than two games in a row well you get the point. Last night they beat the Mavs 108-95 I wonder about his next comment on the Pistons. A seven game winning streak is impressive no matter who you play.
See if this makes sense
On the way home from the Mizzou-Oklahoma State game other then discussing the loss we focused on the coaching. I told my friend “Gary Pinkel has managed to establish stability and winning with Mizzou football.” I went on to state that hasn’t been the case with the basketball program, we are working with coach number three since long-time Coach Norm Stewart was forced to retire. I began this account while viewing the Tulsa-UCF game the following morning. Patrolling the sidelines for Tulsa was former Mizzou Coach Frank Haith. I’m not going to detail the history of the coaching changes at Mizzou but just look briefly around the country.
I believe continuous winning programs establish a legacy that can often extend for decades. We can look at North Carolina, Duke, Kansas and perhaps UCLA. There are others but it’s my belief long ago a tradition was established and continued to be maintained by whoever was seated in the head coaching chair. These schools and others have sometimes experienced poor performing seasons however the ship was stabilized at some point and winning ways returned once again. As for my school Mizzou is still searching for the next “Norm Stewart” a coach who not only is a winner but one who will remain in place in a manner similar to Mizzou’s football coach Gary Pinkel.
Mr. TNT
This wouldn’t occur in today’s broadcast setting a youngster fresh out of college is hired to be the broadcast voice for a professional team. That’s Kevin Harlan’s bio; although he’d broadcast Kansas basketball game in 1982 he became the television-radio voice of the Kansas City Kings. Harlan was an ancient 22 years of age at the time. He would later become the radio voice of the NFL Chiefs and later move to the broadcast booth for the Wolves. Harlan continues to broadcast a number of NFL games although I believe he’s more identified with basketball whether it’s college or the NBA.
This Kansas University grad has lived in the suburban Kansas City metro for a number of years. Harlan’s dog (if he owns one) might bite him when he arrives home, his travel schedule during the NFL/NBA/college season must be mind-boggling. Harlan’s must have a considerable sum of frequent flyer miles. TNT has a number of veteran play-by-play announcers, some of the more familiar names include Dick Stockton, Mike Breen and the incomparable Marv Albert. Harlan is at the top of the TNT broadcast team, he’s entertaining and informative; check him out when you have an opportunity.
Bits n Pieces
Students, alumni and fans of Icarnate Word I apologize in advance. Incarnate traveled Kansas City for a match against UMKC in December. I‘d never heard of the school so my curiosity led me to research the history of the school. Located in San Antonio (TX) it was Division II before moving up to Division I in 2013. Incarnate Word is affiliated with the Southland Conference.
Should an NBA team draft for needs or the best athlete available? I pose the question because I always ponder how the Tom Landry Dallas Cowboys did it. I know its football but bear with me a moment. Example, if the Cowboys had four right guards they might draft another if they were on the clock and he was the top prospect. DraftNet.com “appears” to use the same process when listing their top projections.
A recent account I listed the good and bad surprise NBA teams of 2015. A number of you might wonder why I included the Cavs but excluded the Thunder. There was method to my madness, LeBron had played a major portion of the schedule until recently yet the Cavs failed to play at the level most of us expected. As for the Thunder first Kevin Durant then Russell Westbrook and Durant again were sidelined by injury.
Big 12 arrogance is alive and well and exists, you know how I know? I’m sitting here (Kansas City MO) smack in the middle of the conference. It’s not the students, fans or alumni sporting an attitude. I’m listening to sports radio talk with conference play beginning the hosts were assessing the Big 12. I would guess because Mizzou is in the SEC the conference was discussed as well. The hosts were literally laughing at SEC basketball except Kentucky.

2015
As we enter the new year there are NBA surprises, these are just a few. As this is written the Hawks are playing as if they want to win the NBA Championship, their 26-8 record is best in the Eastern Conference. The Warriors were good last season they have been even better this year (27-5). How about the Raptors, is the “Drake” influence the basis for improved play? They are in third place currently in the east playoff standings.
Those are the good as for the bad, Cavs are 19-16 and you say “they are above .500 they are not that bad.” We can all agree to a point except this Cavs team has LeBron James on its roster. The Clippers have a better record (23-12) but sits in sixth place in the playoff picture. Have the Spurs roster finally aged enough they are non-contenders; the team is in seventh place with a 21-14 record. In conclusion the Cavs, Clippers and Spurs are still contending for an NBA Championship.
A point guard
Oak Hill point guard Terrence Phillips verbally committed to Mizzou over the weekend. Phillips is a 3-star prospect in the Class of 2015 and becomes the third prospect for next year’s team. Phillips measures 5-10 and weighs 170 pounds; he’s the younger brother of Pistons point guard Brandon Jennings.
"Who are those guys? “
The quote is from the 1969 movie classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The two outlaws were on the run at the time Cassidy uttered the line. Kentucky’s John Calipari and Florida’s Billy Donovan might believe a similar situation has risen. The two powers have dominated SEC play over the years however LSU might be sayin’ “move over.” Coach Johnny Jones secured the services of Ben Simmons considered the number one prospect in the Class of 2015 on Rivals and ESPN Recruiting Nation. The 6-9 225 pound Simmons signed a letter of commitment in October 2013.
As the calendar flipped over to 2015 the school received a verbal commit from 5-star prospect Antonio Blakney. Rivals rate the 6-4 Blakney number 13 in the Class of 2015. This talented shooting guard was sought by several schools including my Mizzou Tigers. Successful recruiting shouldn’t be a shock or a surprise for Johnny Jones he was able to lead North Texas to five consecutive 20 win seasons. He assumed the helm at LSU and has continued moving, last year (his second at the helm) the team finished 20-14, as this is written LSU stands 11-2.
On the other hand
This is rant number 99 or 1,000 regarding no NBA team in Kansas City honestly I’ve lost count. Then the other day I told my buddy; “New York has two NBA teams and we can’t even get one.” I stopped a moment and thought about my statement, New York might have two NBA teams but they are mutually terrible. As this is written the Knicks stand 5-20, the Nets are a little better at 10-12.
I love basketball especially the NBA variety however NBA tickets are far more expensive now than 1985 when the Kings left for Sacramento. I can only speak for myself I’d have a difficult time “giving up” my hard earned cash to see a lousy team perform two or three times a week. Purchasing season tickets that would be out of the question. So what do me and thousands of others do? The question is better answered by you I know what I’m going to do.
Say what you mean and mean what you say
I’m not exactly sure where and when I first heard the headline above. In any event I think it might fit this account. Kobe Bryant and has played long enough there is no need for him to send hidden messages. Example, he praised the basketball talent of the Gasol brothers indicating they honed their skills learning the game in Europe. Kobe stated “AAU basketball doesn’t teach our kids how to play basketball.” My initial response why is this statement so shocking, we have long been aware a number of high school and college coaches hate AAU basketball.
Hate might be a strong word for me lets just say AAU basketball and its coaches don’t rate very highly with them. Secondly Kobe made this statement after playing (and losing) to the Gasol Grizzlies a writer speculated Kobe’s statement was aimed at his Laker teammates. Wonder how this writer could come to such a silly conclusion. I believe Kobe is big enough and opinionated enough to say exactly what he wants to say to whom he wants.

There is a distinction between lack of talent and lack of effort!
-------Larry Laker
“Take this job and shove it! “
In the ‘70’s the late Johnny Paycheck recorded a country and western tune that captured the imagination of many for its lyrics. The recording told the chronicle of an employee whose wife had left him, in addition he mentions a supervisor he hated. You get the point, in any event he’s so feed up with life and his job he utters the line “You can take this job and shove it. “ That might be the thought process by anyone in the coaching profession. Four or five NFL coaches either resigned or were fired at the close of the season. A discussion was held on one of the ESPN programs possible replacements. Herm Edwards and Bill Cowers name were mentioned which prompted this response.
One of the hosts stated “why would they are anyone want to put up with the rigors of coaching in the NFL they ware making too much money doing television.” The discussion could have just as easily been NBA coaches. Of all the coaches out there George Karl might be the only one truly desiring a coaching job. Do you really think Mike D’Antoni, Mike Brown, Avery Johnson and P.J. Carlesimo want to coach in the NBA again? The later two have television jobs with far less travel and much less stress than if they were coaching. Depending on their financial situation it might be a thanks but no thanks response by many.
I see the problem(s)
The basketball season to date has not been particularly good for yours truly. Both my favorite teams (Lakers & Mizzou) are experiencing poor play. I didn’t expect either to compete for a conference championship I just expected more. Rather than television I had an opportunity to view Mizzou up close and personal. The Tigers played the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Kansas City at the Sprint Center. For the second time in 10 days Mizzou suffered a heart-breaking defeat losing in OT 74-72. A Mizzou player missed a lay-up which would have forced a second overtime. This is an excuse so bear with it, Mizzou has a real young team. This roster contains only two seniors junior college transfer Kenau Post who rarely plays anymore and Hawaii transfer Keith Shamburger.
Poor rebounding, turnovers and execution (offensive and defensive) at times have been contributing factors to their losing record. Despite the negatives there are several players I believe given time will be key contributors to the program. Sophomore Johnathan Williams III a willow thin forward but certainly looks as though he’s a keeper. In addition Montague “Teki” Gill-Cesar a 6-6 215 pound slashing guard looks sound however he’s a freshman prone to freshman mistakes. Sophomore point guard Wes Clark also is skilled however the one negative for me he needs to reduce the amount of time he dribbles the ball. He often was guilty of slowing the offense. Mizzou fans will suffer this season but considering the future of these Tigers lets just say it looks interesting.
They stepped up
See if you’ve heard this comment or one similar. “Why is it necessary for taxpayers to foot the bill for this new arena (or stadium)? Why don’t the owners kick is some money for this project.” I have gone on record stating no more arenas or stadiums would be built strictly at taxpayers’ expense. I’m sure there might be another arena or stadium built similar to Sprint Center. With no pro team occupying Sprint there was no owner to kick in funds. The Bucks have long desired a new arena but for a number of reasons it’s never been built. New owners Marc Lasry and Wesley Edens along with former owner Herb Kohl have pledged $150 million toward a $400 million dollar construction cost.
Bits n Pieces
The name Elmore Smith might be unfamiliar to most fans; he had a somewhat undistinguished NBA career. The 7 foot Smith had the honor of aiding the Lakers in winning several championships. Smith and a number of players were traded to the Bucks in a trade for Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Although Smith retired in 1979 he still holds the NBA record for most blocked shots in a single game. While playing for the Lakers he blocked 17 shots against the Blazers in 1973.
I’ve only had an opportunity to view UConn on one occasion. With any championship there might be a drop off for a variety of reasons. I believe most of us expected more than a 7-5 record (as this is written). And continuing bad news on a personal note for Coach Kevin Ollie I just read his wife has filed for divorce.
Kentucky (13-0) is not the only collegiate team without a loss; as this is written the following teams also are without a loss.
Duke 13-0
Virginia 13-0
I take full responsibility for Colorado State, Villanova and TCU all being knocked from the ranks of the undefeated. Before I could publish this account all three were upset on Saturday.
I believe the ship has already sailed, i.e. the Lakers have made it known Steve Nash was welcome to return to the team. I have no problem with the statement management made that‘s a good thing. It’s my belief (I could be wrong) there is little left in the gas tank for this former 2X MVP and future Hall of Fame honoree.

There is a distinction between lack of talent and lack of effort!
-------Larry Laker
BULLETIN BULLETIN BULLETIN
In case you are an astronaut returning from the international space station or been rescued from an island similar to that of Gilligan this is the news. A left knee and lower back problems will sideline Lebron James for two weeks. How this will affect the Cavs will unfold over the next few weeks.
They still don’t get it
As a regular reader you know I focus on basketball however there are other sports stories requiring discussion. The Ndamukong Suh incident is the subject of this story. There is no need to complain to the NFL offices or the Lions the decision is final. You’d think with the number of abuse charges leveled at the NFL this year and the “changes” the NFL announced in domestic abuse policy you’d think they would get it right. There was to be a one game suspension for the Lions Ndamukong Suh. The problem was minds were changed.
After it was announced Suh would not play in the Lions upcoming playoff game the decision was overturned. Just in case you were unaware the basis for the Suh suspension it appeared he purposely stepped on the calf of Packers quarterback Aaron Rogers. It should also be noted this was not the first incident of this type in the career of defensive tackle Suh. It was announced Suh could play in the game but his wallet would be lighter by $70,000. We must assume the change in the NFL’s domestic violence policy only applies off the field.
“Looks for answers”
I read the Kansas City headline above regarding Bill Self and Kansas basketball. I’ll be honest I didn’t bother reading the account for a couple of reasons. First I wondered if it was a journalist question or second if Sell really believes he’s got a problem. No doubt we witnessed a porous defense against Temple but does that designate a problem? I believe Kansas has a number of young talented athletes who will get it together. The real issue as I alluded to immediately after the Temple game is the Big 12.
The conference was especially strong last season and might be even stronger this season. Contrast this with SEC and Kentucky basketball; we all believe the Wildcats are the best thing going. We cannot make the same statement regarding the balance of the SEC; potential landmines exist in the Big 12 from one through six. Please note I place no order of finish because I have no idea prior to conference play. I firmly believe now Self’s Kansas team might have a difficult time extending its streak of Big 12 Championships.
“Two men enter one man leaves”
Movie buffs recognize the above quote from the movie Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome however it could fit the Lakers. Both are not really entering at the same time but bear with me a minute or so. Laker swingman Xavier Henry was expected to provide depth to this Laker team after he’d shown a great deal of promise until sidelined late last season.
He would compete for a spot on the 2014-15 Laker roster until an injury sidelined for the season. This past Sunday the Lakers decided to waive Henry replacing him with Tarik Black after the Rockets released him. Henry once played for the Kansas Jayhawks while Black was a member of the Jayhawk squad last season. Black at 6-11 250 pounds should have the bulk sorely missing by the team.
He’s adjusting
After the Wolves Andrew Wiggins scored 27 points against the Cavs I decided to check the numbers of this rookie. As for his breakout night should we suppose there might be extra incentive against the team that drafted him? In any event he’s at 12.6 ppg, 1.4 assists and almost 4 rebounds a game. His field goal percentage (.394) is low however he’s still adjusting to the NBA in this first year. Wiggins demonstrated his defensive skill during Summer League play in fact several NBA scouts indicated his defensive game “was at the NBA level “ahead of his offensive game
