Basketball from a fans perspective

At opposite ends of the spectrum
I’m not an ESPN Insider so I only have tidbits of Bradford Doolittle’s report. The July 29th NBA page Doolittle pronounces the Clippers the most improved team in the NBA based on free agency. The little I could read he based his conclusion on an improved bench. Needless to say Doolittle hasn’t read my July 27th assessment, too bad he might have gained a slightly different perspective.

Bits n Pieces
If you have HBO another recommend to see is “Runnin’ Rebels of UNLV”. The arrival of Jerry “The Shark” Tarkanian in the early ‘70’s brought the team to a national level. A portion of the documentary covers the coaches’ feud with the NCAA. Tark was the pioneer to a common place theme today i.e. criticism of this archaic organization. The Thomas & Mack Arena was constructed due to the rise in stature of UNLV basketball. Tark was unusual in his approach to coaching he recruited players other schools wouldn’t dare touch.

I’m preparing for the worst possible outcome; three of the five ESPN “experts” have pronounced the Lakers losers in free agency. Cut and paste the following and discover the future for Lakernation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3ZOKDmorj0

As you can see I’m quite concerned about the outlook for the 2015-16 season. Should I guess the individuals accessing the Lakers outlook have met with Jim Buss, Mitch Kupchak and Coach Scott? In all seriousness these guys have a job to do and that is write stories for ESPN.com and provide us their view. The profession they don’t have is acquiring personnel, evaluating talent and coaching that talent.

Most of us believe summer is down time for basketball, to a degree basketball activity does slow however there is still basketball goings-on. The NBA Draft was held in June followed up by NBA free agency in early July. After free agency NBA Summer League play began in Orlando, Salt Lake and Las Vegas. Summer League provided an opportunity to see many of the recently drafted players facing pro level talent. AAU basketball is played from June through August, check for times and locations. The World University Games were held this summer in South Korea and the Pan American Games from Toronto, basketball is a featured sport in both. The summer basketball season concludes with the Naismith Hall of Fame ceremonies to be held in the middle of September.

In the Department of Strange and Unusual celebrities can sometimes be considered agents of the program. Several years ago Iowa State received a warning from the NCAA because actor Ashton Kutcher (once a student) was considered a “de-facto” recruiter. It’s occurred again however Kentucky reported on itself and it involved the rapper Drake. Drake had photos taken and we must guess conversed with at least three prospects at last falls Big Blue Madness.

Ancient--I guess it depends
Veteran point guard Andre Miller (39) signed a 1-year contract to play for the Wolves; he will join 39-year old teammate Kevin Garnett. Tim Duncan will be alternate between power forward and center for the Spurs this season at age 39. Speaking of the Spurs Manu Ginobili (38) will distribute the ball to Duncan during the season.  The Clippers reached out and signed veteran free-agent Paul Pierce who turns 38 prior to the start of the season. More recently 37-year old Pablo Prigioni also signed with the Clippers.

You are probably asking where I am going with this fixation on age?  I’ve lost track of the unsolicited words of wisdom I’ve received about Kobe Bryant and his age.  There is no doubt Kobe has slowed by age; in addition injuries have forced him to the sidelines for two consecutive seasons. He will turn 37 before the season starts but don’t tell for the 99th time “He (Kobe) needs to retire because of his age.” Funny how nobody poses age questions on the other athletes mentioned above.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Love me some Phil Jackson
"As I've said before, the media can do and say whatever they please. It's easy for me to ignore them because I'm doing the job that I've been hired to do." Hear that Stephen A. Smith and others? The Zen Master will fix the Knicks given adequate time, one year on the job seems a little soon to me.

Please---no way
Over the years the Lakers have explored signing a number of free agents. Most of the prospects I’ve been excited about the possibility of them becoming a Laker. On the other hand there have been a few I’ve said; “Please no way.” This is not official the report comes from a Laker fan website. The report indicated the Lakers would probably not sign J.R. Smith. That is good news to my ears, for every single positive attribute Smith brings to the table there might be three or four negatives. To my knowledge the player has never experienced any off-court issues all his issues are basketball related. If for some reason the Lakers manage to sign Smith I’ll just have to deal with management’s decision.

I lost track of him
Larry Laker had an opportunity to interview Michael Dixon Jr. Dixon Jr. former Mizzou and Memphis Tiger was training at a sports and physical therapy facility in Lees Summit (MO). I’d lost track of him and wasn’t sure if he still had eligibility at Memphis. I asked the question and he responded; “No I played last year in the Czech Republic,” I responded “Okay good luck next season.” I checked the web when I returned home and discovered Dixon Jr. was in Nymburk last year about 45 km east of Prague. CEZ Basketball Numburk is the team he played for last year and will return in the fall.

Could he play guard?
Video has surfaced on the net regarding Bol Bol, the 15-year old is the son of former NBA player Manute Bol. The youngster plays at Bishop Meige High School in suburban Kansas City. At 6-10 the youngster handles the ball like a guard but I thought “He’s awful skinny,” his dad stood 7-7 but was a slender 200 pounds. Manute had limited skills I still maintain the Sudan native played the game because he was tall. On the other hand Bol Bol is a different matter, unlike his dad Bol grew up playing the game. This got me to thinking and I remember back to 1996, I believed (incorrectly) Marcus Camby was too thin to play in the NBA; he stood 6-11 and weighed 240 pounds. In my mind I fast forwarded to Kevin Durant 6-9 and 240. Bol Bol might not have an NBA career in his future however he might become a 6-10 shooting guard. Can you imagine an opposition player trying to guard him?

Recruiting
If you plan on any degree of coaching at the collegiate level you must be able to recruit talent. Recruiting is the key to any successful program whether its football, basketball or some other sport. The upcoming college basketball season will have two coaches with no college experience. Alabama’s Avery Johnson and Chris Mullin at St. John’s, Johnson however has an advantage over Mullin because he’s coached at the Mavs and Nets.

Questions on Mullin might still be unanswered however he and staff appear to have hit the ground running. He’s got an outstanding freshman class plus valuable transfers to add to the remaining roster. Mullin’s latest reach is all the way across the Atlantic Ocean all the way to Italy. Federico Mussini a talented point guard from Reggio Emilia, Italy has verbally committed to attend St. John’s. Mullin managed to beat out Virginia, Gonzaga and several other programs for Mussini’s service.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Once upon a time
The Converse Shoe Company with its iconic Chuck Taylor shoe once ruled the basketball world. Every youngster in America wore them or at least wanted a pair. Long before Nike and others would come on the scene Converse was the shoe. Sure there were other companies in the business however Chucks dominated the market. They were worn by athletes at the high school, college and pro level. As the shoe industry grew Chucks fell out of favor, Converse begin to develop other lines of shoes. Truth is Dr. J., Magic, Bird and others wore their signature version of Converse.

As Chuck Taylors’ popularity on the court waned they became a fashion accessory as many in the younger generation adopted them. The shoe has changed so little if you compared a 1917 pair (if they were available) and a pair from 2015 you could view little variation. Converse now owned by Nike announced a “new” shoe Chuck Taylor II will be available at the end of July. According to Converse the Chuck II will have an additional layer of cushioning in the sole which will distinguish from the original. It really doesn’t matter if they are edition I or II the shoe will sale and continue into the future.

He’s Kobe
Everybody and their brother have given us their view of the Laker press conference. Last week one of the questions ask of the new Lakers was “Has Kobe contacted you since you arrived? “ None of the trio could answer the question since it was evident Kobe had not talked or text them. This becomes front page news on sports websites and a topic of discussion by ESPN, Fox Sports and CBSSports Network. Personally I think this issue has been blown way out of proportion but you probably guessed that I would say that. What does Charles Barkley think you might ask this from Sir Charles?

"Do I think it's unusual? No. Kobe is a loner. He's obviously one of the 10 greatest basketball players ever, and he's always treated me with respect but he's a loner. He's got a one-track mind as far as basketball goes, and I don't think he's the type of guy -- doesn't make him a bad guy -- who's gonna reach out to guys like that. He will see them in training camp.” If I placed myself in the role of Kobe I would have attempted to contact my new teammates but that’s me, as Barkley indicated Kobe is a different type of dude.

Midnight Madness
This year the first college basketball scrimmage can be held Friday October 10. How and when did this practice begin? First of all there is no set date it can vary from year to year. As for the question former Maryland Coach Lefty Driesell is credited with beginning the practice. His Maryland team began play at 12:03 a.m. October 15, 1971. Midnight Madness spread across the nation to a number of schools. It continues to this day although a number of D-1 schools have abandoned the practice or never implemented it. Duke, Kentucky, Kansas and UCLA are several schools where Midnight Madness reins supreme, as for Mizzou interest has waned over the years.

I had to read it again
The ESPN headline jumped off the page at me; “7-foot Thon Maker breaks ankles.” My first thought this is terrible the highly rated Class of 2016 prospect is hurt, then I re-read the story. The account detailed although Maker is a 7-footer he’s got guard-like skills. You must see the video to fully appreciate it, Maker crosses over the player guarding him who fell to the floor while Maker takes his shot and sinks the basket. A fan commented the player guarding him tripped over his own foot which is true. Does it really matter the (Hay)-Maker was delivered and the defender was on the floor.

Is this gonna work?
Almost everyone agreed fans and the media the lack of a bench was a key reason the Clippers failed to advance in the playoffs. The teams’ starters were forced to play far too many minutes. We are weeks from training camp but let’s do a quick assessment of the new and improved Clippers. After first appearing to leave the fold DeAndre Jordan left Mark Cuban and his Mavs waiting on a call that would never come. All starters return with the exception of Matt Barnes who will be replaced by Paul Pierce. Added to the roster; Lance Stephenson, Wesley Johnson, Cole Aldrich, Josh Smith and Pablo Prigioni.

This mix of veterans should certainly provide the Clippers much needed depth but raises a larger question. Will there be enough minutes and shots for this assemblage of talent with the newcomers plus those returning? I’m no harbinger of doom but I believe if Doc Rivers can win a championship with this mix I’m going to declare him coach of the year right now. Clipper fans before you get upset with me I didn’t make one negative comment regarding the talent. Can this gathering of talent win an NBA Championship of course they can. It will require time management by the coaching staff and those unused to coming off the bench become acquainted with playing limit minutes.

Don’t get it twisted
The slang dictionary says the definition of don’t get it twisted states “don't be mistaken.” That’s me and my earlier statement about the Spurs Becky Hammon. I‘m certainly not saying Hammon is prepared to become an NBA head coach right now. She is still to be commended for leading the Spurs to the NBA Summer League Championship. As for her future and others the question of the first female coach can only be answered by an NBA owner willing to take a chance. That’s not likely to occur in 2015, there is no time table however I believe it will occur. Someone pointed to the fact the first female head coach will occur in the NBA before football or baseball because its basketball.

A change
NBA League Pass has been available to NBA fans since the 1993-94 season. NBA fans have the opportunity to view all out of market games except those nationally televised. As for the future Instead of paying $199 for a season package we’ll be able to pick and chose which games to view. Your next question how much is this going to cost me? Single games will cost you $6.99, I don’t know about you but I always enjoy opportunity to choose what I want. You must be a customer of DirecTV, Dish, AT&T, Comcast, Verizon, Time Warner and Cox in order to receive NBA League Pass. You can view the games on broadband for computers, tablets and mobile devices. Although League Pass is available world-wide this program will only be accessible in the U.S.

Life imitating art imitating life
You’ve heard the old saying; “Life imitating life” I’ve changed the adage and continue reading and you will discover why. Those of you reading this remember the 1986 movie Hoosiers? Gene Hackman starred as basketball coach Norman Dale; his tiny high school would face a large urban high school for the state basketball championship. The movie was fiction based on fact the 1954 Indiana State Championship. At that time Milan had a student enrollment of 161 and faced off against Muncie Central with its 1,600 students. I suppose you might ask where I am going with this account.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Hoosiers MGM studios and the Pacers have come to an agreement. Throughout this upcoming season the Pacers will wear replica Hickory uniforms for selected games. It should be of note high school championships in the State of Indiana are now divided by student enrollment. There are four divisions which have been in place since 1997-1998. As for my attempt to link the events it’s Life (1954 Milan) imitating art (1986 Hoosiers movie) imitating life (2015-16 Pacers). I know it’s a stretch but just work with me on this one.

This may be his last stop
For all his talent Lance Stephenson has become somewhat of a cartoon character, this capable but outlandish at times athlete is now on his third NBA team. He wore out his welcome in Indiana after four seasons. Do you remember seeing the game or the photo of Stephenson blowing in LeBron’s ear while both were on the free-throw line? The Pacers became disenchanted with his immaturity and traded him to the Hornets last season. After a regressing season in Charlotte the Hornets too decided in favor of change.

Stephenson is on to his third team as he was traded to the Clippers. If Larry Bird and Michael Jordan couldn’t get through to him you think Doc Rivers can? Reports indicate a number of Chris Paul’s teammates detest his yelling at them. You think Stephenson going to take Paul’s comments after all wasn’t that suppose to be one of the reasons DeAndre Jordan was leaving? To his detriment he reminds me a little of Ron Artest who finally managed to tame his talent. Maybe this will be Stephenson‘s last stop and maturity will finally set in after all he‘s still young (25 in September).

He’s done it again
I must applaud LeBron James once again; it’s not for his exploits on the court rather it’s the boardroom. His company has signed a deal with Warner Brothers Studios with plans for development of television and film projects. This is the latest business coup Maverick Carter and company has produced for LeBron. Carter and others are childhood friends of LeBron, at the time he hired Carter to run his financial empire many questioned the move. How much is LeBron’s net worth you ask? One site claims his net worth is $300 million while another pegs it even higher at $425 million.

He is the NBA
Once upon a time I believed Marv Albert to be “The voice of the NBA,” the long-time former Knicks broadcaster and TNT play by play man. Albert has been replaced in my view by Ernie Johnson Jr.; even more interesting Johnson’s accomplished the task without ever conducting play by play in an NBA game. Don’t believe Johnson couldn’t perform the task if required to do so. From 1993 to 1996 he called games of the baseball Braves, in addition he’s been behind the mike for other sporting events including golf. One of the more interesting facts he is the son of a former major league baseball pitcher Ernie Johnson Sr.

Johnson Jr. was believed to have a career in the sport of his father. A funny thing happened on the way to his planned baseball profession he discovered he wasn’t very good. In fact Johnson Jr. played freshman baseball at Georgia but wasn’t good enough to qualify as a sophomore. The enterprising Johnson Jr. turned to the broadcast field his father’s second career after Sr. retired from baseball. Jr. has received a number of Emmys and other broadcast awards over the years but none paint a true portrait of the man. I certainly cannot due him justice in this short piece however I now believe Johnson is the NBA.

Basketball from a fans perspective

She did it
There were naysayer’s at the time Becky Hammon was named Spurs assistant coach last year. She certainly had plenty of basketball experience after an WNBA and Euro career. “Girls don’t play b-ball like guys do” might have been one of the nicer comments you might have heard. Becoming the first female assistant would come second to her latest accomplishment as a head coach. I know it’s only NBA Summer League but Hammon was able to lead her Spurs team to the Las Vegas title. The game was tied at the half however the Spurs would shine in the second half and defeat the Suns in a close game 93-90.

I realize a number of you might believe the Spurs team had the best personnel which probably aided them in winning the title. That certainly may have been the case however talented athletes don’t always win without adequate coaching. Hammon may never be hired as head coach in the NBA but her sterling performance might open the door for other women to state; “We might not be able to play with the Big Boys however we can certainly coach them.” Coach Popovich and Spurs management should be congratulated as well, they looked beyond the fact Hammon was a female and made the hire they believed was best.

Standby for further developments
Basketball standout Frank Jackson is an outstanding 2016 high school prospect; Rivals list him as the number 10 talent in the nation. The 6-2 guard lives in Lone Peak Utah is a Mormon and early on committed to Brigham Young University. Circumstances changed for the young man and he de-committed and opened the recruiting process again.

Prior to Jackson’s BYU commitment a high number of schools were attempting to secure his services including Duke University. At the time Jabari Parker was being recruited his status was similar to Jackson. Parker a Mormon was “headed” to BYU but changed his mind. In the recruiting process BYU lost and Duke landed Parker and there are quiet rumblings that might be the case once again. No definitive word on Jackson’s school decision yet I’ll try and update you as soon as it’s announced.

Stuff you knew but forgot
Have you ever had one of those moments when someone or something is brought to your attention, you say to yourself; “I knew that!” I was aware each of the five had been elected to the Naismith Hall of Fame, the story I forgot all four were drafted in the same year. NBA TV ran a feature on the Draft Class of 1984 and indicated this may have been the all-time best in NBA history. Four, count them four (4) Hall of Fame players all drafted in the same year. In draft order they were; Hakeem Olajuwon (1), Michael Jordan (3), Charles Barkley (5) and John Stockton (16).

In case you wondered about the second pick that year it was Sam Bowie selected by the Blazers. Portland has forever been the butt of jokes for passing on Jordan and choosing Bowie. The 7-1 Bowie came into the NBA with much promise his career was plagued by injuries he never had the NBA career envisioned by the Blazers and NBA fans. In addition consider this a non-factor in choosing Bowie over Jordan, in 1983 the Blazers drafted Clyde “The Glide” Drexler. Drexler played the same position as Jordan and it should be of note Drexler also is in the Naismith Hall of Fame.

Akron
When we think of Akron (OH) our first thought might be the All American Soap Box Derby or several tire manufacturers who once called the city home. If discussing basketball LeBron James might first come to mind. Did you realize Steph Curry was also born in Akron? Even earlier than LeBron and Curry two others may have first been responsible for placing Akron on the NBA map, both played at Central High School and were teammates. In addition their basketball contributions led both to the Naismith Hall of Fame.

The late Gus Johnson might have invented the term power forward. Johnson at 6-6 and 230 pounds personified power, he played from 1963-1973 most of it as a member of the Baltimore Bullets (Washington Wizards). Johnson was a 5X NBA All Star and 2X NBA Defensive First Team. His high school teammate Nate Thurmond was a 6-11 225 pound center who played from 1963-1977 most of it as a member of the San Francisco (Golden State) Warriors. Thurmond was a 7X NBA All Star and 2X NBA Defensive First Team and 3X NBA Defensive Second Team. While a member of the Bulls Thurmond recorded the only quadruple double in the NBA, 22 points, 14 rebounds, 13 assists and 12 blocked shots.

Basketball from a fans perspective

"Where there’s smoke there’s fire”

Many are familiar with the old adage and no explanation is required, as for others continue to read. I found it Interesting reading back to back headlines. “Rivers says Jordan-Paul rift way over-blown” and right beneath it: “Karl says rift with Kings, Cousins exaggerated”. The first headline Clipper Coach Rivers claiming the problem between Chris Paul and DeAndre Jordan was exaggerated. In the second headline the trouble between Kings Coach Karl and his star player Boogie Cousins. The smoke/fire reference says we are generally aware of smoke prior to seeing the fire. Just because they say there’s nothing to the reported issue(s) that might not always be the case.

Shut up, please
The Lakers D’Angelo Russell has been in the NBA 15 minutes and critics galore have come forward. You’ve heard some of their commentary; “Poor shooting, too many turnovers, they should have drafted “big man” Okafor instead of him.” You’ve heard these statements and maybe others but consider these scraps of information. Despite being the 2nd pick in the draft Russell is a 19-year old who would be entering his sophomore year of college. Why are selected members of the media so negative? I would ask the same question posed about the Knicks choice. If Okafor had been the pick is he talented enough to turn the Lakers around in one season? Russell is attempting to adjust his game to the NBA level on the fly.

Can we at least wait until the regular season before we declare the young man can’t play at this level? Every athlete has a learning curve; poor Russell just tossed aside after FOUR NBA SUMMER LEAGUE GAMES! (As this is written). Don’t you think it might be advantageous to wait for the regular season and not base his talent level on Summer League play? I could name those sports media critics but I’m providing them far too much credit. The best response thus far may have come from Coach Scott. He said; “He’s not Magic Johnson he’s got a long way to go.” Despite evident talent don’t expect instant results. As for the Russell critics all I can say to them is simple, shut up please.

Late bloomer
Those of us in Missouri and Big 12 country are familiar with the Hawks DeMarre Carroll. Carroll was one of the keys to the successful regular season and playoff run of the Atlanta Hawks. He was the 27th pick from Mizzou by the Grizzlies in the first round of the 2009 NBA Draft. He played as a reserve through 2011 and then he toiled in the

D-League during the 2010-11 season. He moved from the Rockets to the Nuggets and later the Jazz, free agency led him to sign with the Hawks in 2013. The old adage timing is everything proved true in Carroll’s case, he would become a starter although he could score he became primarily known for his defensive prowess. Free agency has proven beneficial to Carroll one again. As I wrote earlier Carroll is headed north to Toronto. With Carroll it could be a timing issue or just the fact he just might be a late bloomer.

This is funny I‘m sure only to me
I’m sure Kobe haters are tired of hearing a broadcaster or public address announcement; “Basket by Kobe”? Kobe Bryant has only one season remaining in the NBA as for the others that’s a different story. Yes there are others although they spell their names differently. In addition we have no idea if their parents named their offspring after Kobe Bryant. Leading off is Kobie Eubanks a 6-5 shooting guard from Delray Beach (FL). This Kobie is a Class of 2015 prospect and he’s made Alabama his school of choice. In the Class of 2016 we have Kobi Simmons a 6-5 point guard, he‘s from Alpharetta an Atlanta suburb. Also in the Class of 2016 is Koby McEwen a 6-3 point guard from Mount Pleasant Utah. One is headed off to college in the fall while the others have another year of high school. This is no prediction of future stardom for any player just a little humor on my part.

“It’s Better in the Bahamas”
The headline is the premise used in tourist ads by the island nation. The Bahamas or Officially the Commonwealth of The Bahamas is a nation comprised of over 700 islands which lie east and southeast of Miami (FL). Although a small nation a number of players have emerged to play college ball and a few in the NBA. To date Mycal Thompson (Steph’s dad) might be the best NBA player to emerge from the island nation. Former NBA player Rick Fox was born in Canada although his father immigrated to the nation from The Bahamas.

Whose got next you ask? It may be DeAndre Ayton; he might be the next great talent to emerge from The Bahamas. After surveying several schools Ayton along with his guardian decided on Balbo City. The private school is located in San Diego (CA) nearly 4,000 miles from his Nassau home. Ayton is a 6-10 235 pound power forward and rated the number one prospect in the Class of 2017. Ayton’s already attracted attention from several big time basketball programs.

What I learned
Bill Self is a good college coach as for his medical knowledge that’s another question. Prior to the 76er announcement reports indicated Joel Embiid would require surgery. Self who coached Embiid responded “no further surgery” was required. Who provided him the information relating to Embiid? Self led the US team comprised of mostly Kansas players win the gold medal in the World University Games. Perhaps Self should stick to basketball rather than practicing medicine.

Wanna know how pleased the Thunder were with Enes Kanter‘s play? Kanter arrived in Oklahoma City in a 3-way February trade from the Jazz. The 6-11 center became a restricted free-agent at the end of the 2015 season. Once the free-agent period opened the Blazers made an offer to Kanter. Well no deal was reached, the Thunder decided to match the Blazer effort so the Turkish Big Man will remain in Oklahoma City.

Rivals and ESPN Recruiting Nation don’t agree, on the other hand is it really necessary? Class of 2016 list Rivals.com says Josh Jackson a 6-7 shooting guard is their number one. Jackson hails from Napa (CA) an hour and four minutes drive from San Francisco with little traffic. Jackson has made no decision on a school nevertheless his choices contain the list of usual suspects. As for ESPN Recruiting they chose Harry Giles a 6-10 power forward from Winston-Salem (NC). Giles list is similar to Jackson in that he has several of the same schools.

At this point it appears Nick Young a.k.a. Swaggy P. will remain a Laker. I like Swaggy for his free-spirit attitude and spontaneity. Now I question if this care-free spirit might cause issues with this youthful Laker team. As for Swaggy he missed a great deal of time last season and when he was on the court didn’t shoot particularly well. I thought with a re-tooled roster Swaggy would be on the outside looking in but that doesn’t appear to be the case. Management has all but confirmed he’s a Laker for the time-being.

Zydrunas Ilgaukas
The 7-3 Lithuanian suffered a series of foot injuries which sidelined him early in his NBA career. In 1996 he would be the 20th pick in the first round of the 1996 draft. I’m sure Cavs fans must have regretted the choice. The first year Ilgaukas was a starter in 81 of the 82 games that season that would be his last full season for several years. He would miss parts of the next three seasons and remained sidelined until the 2002-03 season. Fully healed Ilgaukas returned to full time play and would play for 12 seasons most with the Cavs. Where am I going with this story you might ask? It’s been reported Joel Embiid of the 76ers will require foot surgery once again. He will miss the 2015-16 season his second consecutive miss. All foot injuries are not the same and I certainly am not comparing. The point I’m attempting to make Ilgaukas could have easily given up yet he sustained.

China in da House
When is the next Yao Ming going to emerge from China? That’s the question on the minds of many NBA fans including this one. He might not be the second coming of Yao but He Tianju could be the next Chinese import to gain an NBA roster. The 24-year old is playing for the Pelicans Summer League team in Las Vegas. Tianju hails from Liaoning China which is located in the northeast portion of the nation, its 5-7 miles drive time from the nation’s capital Beijing. Tianju has four years experience playing in the Chinese Basketball Association. There is no guarantee he will be signed but I thought it noteworthy to bring to your attention. If we look ahead to 2016 NBADraftnet.com and DraftExpress.com both list Zhou Qi as a draft prospect, Qi is 7-2 and weighs a lean 209 pounds

Where are they?
ABC announced they are adding a limited number of Saturday night games in the
2015-16 season. This move is interesting on several levels; number one of course is financial. I’m sure by now you’ve read or heard of the cut-backs at ESPN. The “where are they” question is simple, 5-4-3-2-1 cue the naysayer’s. You know them, the folks who like to remind us on a daily basis, “Nobody is watching the NBA.”   Somebody out there must be watching the games, rest assured ABC did not make this decision on a snap basis.

Basketball from a fans perspective

It’s not just me
I came across a fan letter which I’ll share with you; I’m paraphrasing it. “Stephen A. Smith (ESPN) complaining about the Knicks picking Kristaps Porzingis in the draft. He’s wrong most of the time when discussing basketball.” We can always argue whether veteran player A is better than player B and that’s okay. How can you make a similar statement regarding a player who has never played in the NBA? My dispute with Smith and others they give us the impression Phil Jackson is purposely sabotaging a re-building effort. Another point of discussion NBA teams scout these prospects a number of times ahead of the draft. We (including Smith) don’t have access to the scouting information they might compile.

Despite terminology utilized drafting good players is not an exact science. Smith’s contention is the Knicks don’t have time to wait 2-3 years for Porzingis to develop and adjust to the rigors of the NBA. I’d like to point out last season’s team won a grand total of 17 games, I question Smith and others to name a player the Knicks could have drafted to turn this team around in one season. In addition if Smith knows as much about basketball as he purports why is he not working for the Knicks or some other NBA franchise?  Finally we hear from former Laker great James Worthy who said; *“He’s (Porzingis) a freak of nature. He’s a combination of Dirk Nowitzki and Kevin Durant. It’s a good pick for the Knicks."

*New York Post

Bits n Pieces
By now you are aware Deron Williams asked for and received a buyout from the Nets. It’s reported (and it makes sense) he’ll sign with the Mavs. You ask the question why Texas and why the Mavs. Although D-Will was born in West Virginia he grew up and attended high school in The Colony (TX) a suburb of Dallas. He’s not the D-Will we remember from the Utah Jazz but should assist the team at the point.

Are you ready for some college basketball? October 16 is the date set for Big Blue Madness tip off. This is Kentucky‘s annual scrimmage where fans will have their first opportunity to see the freshman and remaining Wildcats. Believe it or not there are returning letterman to the Kentucky program.

“Closing the borders” on recruiting was initiated by Mizzou football Coach Gary Pinkel.
He emphasized focusing on every high profile high school player in the state. I looked forward to this slogan being utilized by Mizzou basketball. Jayson Tatum Rivals 5-star prospect and the number three in the Class of 2016 announced his commitment. Tatum a 6-8 205 pound small forward chose Duke over Mizzou and several other programs. Did I forget to inform you Tatum lives in St. Louis, I guess for now closing the borders only applies to Mizzou football.

One letter writer claimed angry letters aimed at Austin Rivers was hate mail from Laker fans. Another made this statement which makes more sense to me. “If Rivers had stayed in college he’d be graduating now, 3 additional years under Coach K and he would have been ready. In addition there was no financial reason for him to leave school early.”

?????
I walked into the building and a friend asked me the question; “What’s going on with Portland”? Laker fans were certainly aware of LaMarcus Aldridge as their team was attempting to sign the free agent power forward. Most of us were so busy keeping up with the comings and goings of other free agents we totally neglected the Blazers.  I’m sure their fans noted the mass exodus out of Portland.

Free agent center Robin Lopez signed with the Knicks, backup shooting guard Aaron Affalo signed with the Nuggets. Shooting guard Wesley Matthews saddled up and headed to play for the Mavs and Mark Cuban. Small forward Nicholas Batum was traded to the Hornets for power forward Noah Vonleh and guard Gerald Henderson. Consider this tidbit Batum was the only trade to date the others left as free agents.

The match up
Prior to the draft I made note the Wolves-Lakers Summer League Game would be telecast on NBA-TV. I also mentioned it would be the first match up between the Wolves Karl-Anthony Towns and Jahlil Okafor of the Lakers. A strange thing happened on the way to the game the Lakers didn’t draft Okafor instead they favored 6-5 combo guard D’Angelo Russell. The Wolves won an entertaining game 81-68; I was impressed with Towns as he scored 12 points and moved smoothly on the court. As for the 6-5 Russell he would score 8 points grabbed 5 rebounds and dish out 6 assists along with 3 steals.

I admit my curiosity forced me to focus on Russell over others on the court. Both players will face bumps in the road this upcoming season however it’s clear to me. Baring injury the NBA post Kobe, post LeBron will remain in good hands. The majority of games in the Las Vegas portion of Summer League are played in the Cox Pavilion. The demand for tickets to this game meant it was held in the more spacious Thomas & Mack Arena. The attendees certainly favored the Lakers, Los Angeles and Southern Cal is a 4-5 hour drive to Las Vegas.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Note
DeAndre Jordan apologized to Mark Cuban in a tweet, no phone call or text message.  This is the last report by me, there are several stories circulating on the events that are plain not true.  Chris Broussard apologized to Mark Cuban, this ESPN reporter had tweeted a story "his sources" had provided him that turn out to be a lie.

Difference of opinion
You remember Charles Barkley don’t you? The “Mouth of the South” is well known for speaking the truth according to Barkley, the only problem he’s often guilty of sticking his foot in his mouth. An example after Yao Ming was drafted in 2002 Barkley made a bet with his TNT co-host Kenny Smith; “If Yao (Ming) scored 19 points in a game this year, he would kiss Smith’s behind.” Of course we are aware Yao averaged more than 19 points a year or more except three during his nearly 10-year NBA career. This is Barkley’s latest declaration; “The Lakers trading for (Roy) Hibbert is not going to help them.” By the way I don’t remember if Barkley ever paid his Yao Ming bet. How bout those on the opposite side of the Barkley statement, former NBA executive Tom Penn and Coach P.J. Carlesimo were asked the same question later. Penn and Carlesimo made a similar declaration, “In the tough Western Conference it’s likely they (the Lakers) will not make the playoffs.”

They added this caveat unlike Barkley they believe the Lakers will be a better team. Many believe in Barkley’s words for a different reason, they accept as true “small ball” will now become the norm based on the success of the Warriors. Sorry folks ESPN’s Jay Bilas said it best recently when asked the question; “If you have the chance to draft a Big Man (or trade for one) you do it.” I’ve read and heard a number of negative comments regarding Hibbert; “He can’t do this or he’s not that.” I’m prompted to ask the question is there anything he does correctly? As a Laker fan I’m hoping a change of scenery will prove beneficial to Hibbert. As for the offense if he gives me 12-10-3 and clogs the lane I’m happy. What does GM Mitch Kupchak say; "Getting a rim protector and a force in the paint is something we have not had."

Who is correct?
I thought to re-visit the DeAndre Jordan story one more time; I decided this after reading comments by his former and current coach Doc Rivers. Rivers on the defensive hearing criticism says there is nothing wrong with DJ’s failure to contact Mavs owner Mark Cuban. Rivers claims he faced the same situation the prior week as DJ never talked to him either. Others use the term “tampering” as it applies to reports of Clippers players, coach and owner holding DJ hostage in his own home. Rivers claims that report is an exaggeration of the truth. What do you think; I’m sure you’ve heard a story DJ is not the first player to back out on a promise. This was DJ’s decision as a free-agent, my issue he should have responded at some manner to Cuban. Am I wrong for stating this wasn’t settled satisfactorily? In closing Brevin Knight NBA TV said; “The pressure is off Rivers the GM (with the re-commit from DJ) and now returns to Rivers the coach once again.”

Bits n Pieces
Is NYC large enough both twin brothers Brook and Robin Lopez? Brook’s played for the Nets for several years. Although a free agent instead of changing teams he decided in favor of his old team. His brother Robin playing for the Blazers also became a free agent. Unlike his twin he chose another team he’s heading east to play for the Knicks.

The issue of early entrance into the NBA continues to concern me.  My chief concern is checking DraftExpress.com’s 2016 mock draft and discovering 8 of the first 10 just graduated high school. They have yet to walk onto a college campus and they are already projected into the NBA. Of course my chief concern an 18-year old is generally recognized as an adult despite what we might believe. Other than entering into binding contracts (I believe age 19) and purchase of alcohol an 18-year old has the same rights as a 28 or

38-year old.

Brooklyn thing---I guess
Professional sports teams almost always have the city name on the front of their uniforms; there are exceptions in spite of this. If we check out New York City we have the New York Yankees and New York Mets baseball teams; there are New York Giants and New York Jets of the NFL. In hockey we have the Rangers and Islanders both have New York in front of their name. The NBA has the New York Knicks an original NBA franchise and the Brooklyn Nets. All the sport franchises have New York on the front of their jersey except the Nets. Why the exception with the Nets franchise? A brief history lesson, in 1967 the New Jersey Americans were an original ABA franchise. From 1967 to 1976 locating to the city they became the New York Nets (ABA) and joined the NBA under that name.

The franchise moved back to New Jersey in 1977 being renamed New Jersey; they would remain in the state until 2012. In the fall of that year Barclays Center would open in Brooklyn and the team would be renamed once again. Why didn’t they follow the lead of the other franchises and become the New York Nets? The Dodgers baseball team (now in Los Angeles) began play in 1884 with the name Brooklyn on the front of the jersey. The team would play in Brooklyn until 1957 until they moved west to Los Angeles. The 73-year history of a team with the borough name continued to resonate with residents despite the fact most are probably too young to even remember why. Once the decision was made for the move to the borough it was certain the name Brooklyn would be re-born, of course the NBA had to approve the name change. Now you know why the franchise name is Brooklyn Nets rather than New York.

On second thought

“I’m not leaving after all I wasn’t really serious about my send-off. “ That might have been the comment from DeAndre Jordan, after first committing to the Mavs during free agency he changed his mind deciding to remain with the Clippers. One of the more humorous lines I heard; “Its okay Jordan had flip-plops on when he shook hands on the deal.” I checked out ESPN’s “Around the Horn” on Wednesday as word circulated on this change of heart. Three of the four reporters questioned had no difficulty with Jordan reneging on his agreement.

“He (Jordan) signed nothing binding him to the Mavs“ was the stated view of panel members. I can agree with their view to a point but what about a promise, is a person’s word or handshake no longer binding? I hope this report is untrue; word is Jordan at 6-11 and 200+ pounds refused to answer phone calls or text messages from Mavs owner Mark Cuban. That type of behavior we might expect from a child not a grown man. What was wrong with calling Cuban or sending a text stating he'd changed his mind?  As for t
he actions of the Clippers I have no complaint they accomplished the mission they intended.

Stop please
I heard this the other day; “If we cannot get an arena done the Bucks will move to Las Vegas or Seattle.” I cannot speak to the Vegas portion of the story though I’m comfortable discussing Seattle. Owners of the Milwaukee Bucks are having problems getting an arena deal completed. Once again Seattle’s name is attached to the possible move of an NBA franchise to that city. This is just a short and brief statement; quit punking Seattle, we’ve been hearing this type of talk since 2008 when the Sonics headed for Oklahoma City.

Just wondering
I’m posing a question which I have no answer. The world is aware NBA free agency began on July 1, teams cannot complete trades or sign free agents until yesterday (July 9) wonder why? It’s an item for discussion since the players/teams often announce ahead of the signing date they have concluded an agreement with player ______.

Why I am not surprised
The headline read; “Syracuse leads nation in men's basketball attendance again.” Not exactly surprising the Orangemen led the nation in attendance during the 2014-15 basketball season. After all the Carrier Dome technically is a football/basketball stadium, it seats 35,446 for basketball. Rupp Arena home of the Kentucky Wildcats seats 23,500 for basketball almost 12,000 less than the Carrier Dome. The Louisville Cardinals finished in third place playing in the KFC Yum Center seating 22,090 for basketball. I’m not sure where Duke finished however Cameron Indoor Stadium opened in 1940 and expanded in 1988 seats 9,314.

Allen Fieldhouse home of the Kansas Jayhawks opened in 1955, renovations over the years has increased capacity to 16,300. The Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill opened in 1986 and holds 21,750 for Tarheel basketball. The Butler Bulldogs home Hinkle Fieldhouse opened in 1928 and has taken the opposite approach. Renovations over the years have eliminated seating and it now seats 9,100 for games. Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City home of the University Missouri Kansas City has a rich history. Opened in 1935 this arena has served as host for more NCAA Championships than any other building in the nation. Downsize over the years it now has 7,300 permanent seats and an additional 2,600 temporary.

Loser
The Mavs became losers twice allow this brief explanation. Free agent Robin Lopez was leaving the Blazers but wanted the Mavs. Lopez wouldn’t commit because DeAndre Jordan beat him to the front of the line, he decided to sign with the Knicks. The Mavs have lost two centers DeAndre Jordan and Robin Lopez and have no center. I’ve been critical of Mavs owner Mark Cuban but I’m on his side this time.

Wanna know why
The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports released its report recently. As usual the NBA received high marks for its hiring practices with minorities and women. Read the report for yourselves if you desire. Do you really want to know why the NBA receives such high marks?  MLB, the NFL and other pro sports lie in the rear view mirror of the NBA with it's employment history.  Consider this account Becky Hammon is a party of one however she continues to pave the way.

At the beginning of last season Gregg Popovich added Hammon to his coaching staff thus she became the first female assistant in the NBA.  Hammon made make history again when serving as head coach of the Spurs Summer League team. The NFL will have a female official this fall; they are tardy to the party. Violet Palmer has been officiating for 18 years, she was joined last season by Lauren Holtkamp. Coaches and officiating are only a small portion of the hiring practices of the NBA.

Changing of the guard
Wisconsin’s Bo Ryan announced the 2015-16 will be his last, at 67 he’s not the oldest active coach however he believes the time is now to retire. One of the most successful coaches heading into his final season Ryan’s compiled a 740–228 (.764) record. He’s been selected as Big Ten Coach of the Year four times most recently in 2015. In addition his Wisconsin team has appeared in two Final Four appearances, 2014 and 2015.

Earlier Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim indicated 2015-16 would be his last at the helm. His

858–333 (.720) winning record is tarnished by some of the improprieties that came to light this past season. Nevertheless his 2003 NCAA Championship remains a permanent part of his coaching resume. Up to this time period Boeheim has the rare distinction of “never” leaving Syracuse. He was a guard from 1963-1966 and after a brief pro career returned to become an assistant coach in 1969. He assumed the role of head coach in 1976.

Name change
If you’ve read Words eye view any length of time you know I have a problem with the names of several pro teams particularly in the NBA. As an example I’ve long believed Thunder was probably the dumbest name that could have been chosen for Oklahoma City‘s team. I understand the City of Seattle owned the Sonics name and it wasn’t traveling to the city with the team. Actually there is another NBA name around much older and I hate their name too. A little background the expansion Zephyrs moved from Chicago to Baltimore in 1963 and adopted the name used in an earlier time Bullets. The original Baltimore Bullets competed in the American Basketball League and later the Basketball Association which merged with the NBA. The Bullets played from 1944-1954.

The new guys would later move to Washington D.C. where they would become the Capital Bullets and when they moved into the city they became the Washington Bullets. In the late ‘90’s former owner Abe Pollin concerned with violence in the city believed it would be more appropriate to change the name of the team. A contest was held and among the names submitted was; Dragons, Express, Stallions, Sea Dogs, and Wizards. I don’t particularly like any of those names however I dislike Wizards even more. After Pollin’s death the team was sold to Ted Leonis and he’s indicated a willingness to change the name. Whether Leonis decides to undertake a name change is yet too decided.

I ain’t mad
Marc Gasol of the Grizzlies indicated early on in the free-agency period he had no desire to talk to the Lakers.  His based his reasoning on the "poor treatment his brother received from the team."  I believe Pau was treated poorly however I don't believe it was all Laker management it was the departed Mike D'Antoni.  For reasons unknown it appeared D'Antoni failed to utilize Pau's talent effectively or communicate with him.  Although his time with the Lakers was limited I maintain he was the best power forward in team history.  That's a strong statement but one I believe is true.

A.C. Green, Bill Bridges and Happy Hairston might have been superior at rebounding the ball but Pau was a better scorer. After he arrived in Los Angeles his scoring dipped because he was no longer the focal of the offense. His scoring numbers were still two points higher than Rudy LaRusso. There have been other power forwards throughout the teams history however for me Green, Bridges, Hairston and LaRusso were the best of the best. Pau Gasol exceeded all of them in my eyes.  The Lakers retired Shaquille O'Neal's number hopefully they will chose some day to retire Gasol's number too after all he helped lead the team to an NBA Championship.

Basketball from a fans perspective

“How Ya Like Me Now”
A 1987 rap song from Kool Moe Dee was titled; “How Ya Like Me Now.” Phil Jackson the Zen Master could be stating that toward ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith. Smith has voice consistent criticism of everything Jackson’s done or not done since the mid-point of the basketball season. J.R. Smith had an outstanding playoff game for the Cavs and Smith voiced his objection that Jackson had traded him. The NBA Draft and the Zen Master’s selection of 7-3 center Kristaps Porzingis provided Smith another opportunity to go off on Jackson. Later the trade of Tim Hardaway Jr. for rookie combo guard Jerian Grant from Notre Dame was added.

During the early portion of free agency the team received affirmation from talented swingman Aaron Affalo he would become a Knick. Later 7-1 center Robin Lopez late of Portland also agreed to come on board. 6-8 forward Derrick Williams left the Kings and also signed with the Knicks. Smith no longer is able to claim the Zen Master is not working to improve the team one of the criticisms we’ve heard continually from Smith. The Knicks might not yet be championship material but Smith and others need to zip it up with their continuing Phil Jackson diatribe.

Surprising
It might appear I’m gloating far from it I’m just reporting the facts. DeAndre Jordan has decided in favor of the Mavs over a return to the Clippers. It took me back; we heard stories three years ago Kobe Bryant was “responsible” for driving Dwight Howard out of town. Who do we blame for Andre Jordan leaving? Is it Chris Paul whom we begin hearing rumors he and Jordan didn’t get along? The diminutive point guard was reported to have encountered problems with Jordan. The Clippers have no center having allowed back-up Steve Hawes to leave earlier.

Now Jordan is on his way to the Mavs despite the fact the Clippers held his “Bird” rights. Oh, did I forget the Lakers held Howard’s Bird rights too? For those who might not be familiar with the term Bird rights this is a brief explanation. The Clippers and the Lakers in the past could re-sign Jordan and Howard at a larger sum than the Mavs and Lakers.  I guess sometimes money might not be quite as important as we are first led to believe. Hey Kobe move over you have company in the “running out of town” department, welcome Chris Paul to the team.

He ain’t got no hair
George Karl is gonna pull out what remaining hair he’s got left at some point real soon. You remember earlier he attempted to trade 7 foot center Boogie Cousins the Kings best player. Cousins is a handful and certainly had a past history of immaturity. On top of this the Kings reached out to Rajon Rondo former Celtic and Mavs point guard. Reports are they have signed Rondo to a 1-year deal, never a good shooter but good point guard skills which have eroded in recent years. After the Celtics traded him to the Mavs his game went even further south. The time spent with the Mavs was certainly less than stellar, at one point the refused to run a play Coach Carlisle designed. This upcoming season will be quite interesting for the Kings.

It’s still a move
Laker fans are certainly not jumping up and down with excitement. The team made a move although it wasn’t the one most fans believed would occur. Unable to secure the services of a free-agent the Lakers traded for a Big Man. Roy Hibbert had worn out his welcome with the Pacers. After playing at an All-Star level his game regressed. Whether if was a change in the offense, personnel or something else Hibbert fell out of favor. The Pacers traded him for a box of cracker jacks and a soda. Just kiddin’, the Lakers will give up their second round draft choice plus cash and take on Hibbert's $15 million dollar contract

There is no need for the 7-2 260 pound center to score the Lakers desperately need a rim protector a defensive presence he’s exhibited in the past. The Lakers had little problem scoring their defense is what caused them to lose a record number of games.  It seems Hibbert has been around forever however he’s only 28-years old (29 in December). If and that’s a large if he can resurrect his career he should have 5 or 6 productive seasons remaining. If Hibbert is unable to provide the rim protection the team seeks there are alternatives. Perhaps rookie Robert Upshaw, a draft choice or trade will be made for a Big Man next season

Let’s set the record straight
Sometimes I believe it’s necessary for me to become the counter-point to a disagreement of facts. I am unable to contact Doug Gottlieb of CBS Sports radio so you become my sounding board. I’m paraphrasing a portion of Gottlieb’s commentary on Wednesday afternoon. He said; “LeBron’s personality allows him to draw players to the Cavs while Kobe cannot do the same for the Lakers.” Continuing he says; “The Lakers have been unable to sign any high profile free agent in years due to Kobe.” I believe personalities can affect decisions but to simply blame Kobe for the Lakers failure to sign a free agent is silly.

In years past the Lakers have been very; very good trading for players, signing free agents is a far different matter.  The last talented player coming on board was Pau Gasol and he too arrived in a trade.  Consider this more than Kobe the Lakers are not very good, they haven't been a championship team for a few years.  LaMarcus Aldridge indicated he wanted a team capable of winning right now-----that's not the Lakers, the same case could made for DeAndre Jordan.  Jordan would remain in Los Angeles but play for the Lakers who are currently a couple of rungs under the Clippers.  The rookies (Russell, Nance Jr. and Brown) drafted in June are hopefully the first "bricks" in rebuilding the team.  To simply state Kobe is the problem is not true and I'm surprised at Gottlieb, I thought he was smarter than to come to this conclusion.

Surprising to date
The news came early Wednesday after Kevin Love would re-sign with the Cavs. That‘s not surprising most believe this would be the case. The agreement is reported to be
5-year deal that’s the surprising detail. Most believed Love would interview with several teams and then sign a 1-year contract in lieu of the new television contract that kicks in next year. DeMarre Carroll is heading north to Canada, most believed he’d resign and remain in the ATL. The number tossed about is $60 million. So the Raptors who made an effective playoff run last season add another puzzle piece. Stay tuned for further developments.

“The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”
The 1966 movie made Clint Eastwood a star although he’d been working in Hollywood for a number of years. The title of this break-out movie for Eastwood could easily be applied to the Sacramento Kings. The “Good” might be the talent exhibited by players Boogie Cousins and Rudy Gay. The “Bad” is Coach George Karl, we know there have been maturity issues with Cousins but how do you trade the star of a mediocre team?

“Ugly” might be the term applied to Vivek Ranadive owner, he and his group came to the forefront to save the Kings. The franchise was packed and headed to Seattle until Ranadive stepped up to the plate. We read some strange comments about the NBA from Ranadive prior to the Cousins controversy. We have no idea if the following reports are valid; “Ranadive is entertaining firing Karl.” The secondary account claims the owner “has reached out to Kentucky’s John Calipari.”

Bits n Pieces
One of the free agents I believe slipping beneath the radar is Greg Monroe. He’s a 6-11 power forward/center weighing in at 250 pounds. Monroe would leave Georgetown after an outstanding sophomore year. He will enter his 6th year in 2015-16 yet is only 25-years old. The Pistons have not had much of a national presence we might have failed to see him play. Last season his numbers were 15.9 ppg, 10.2 rebounds while shooting .496 from the floor. Monroe is out there NBA teams just waiting to be signed.

The Clippers Matt Barnes is on the move once again, Can you guesstimate the number of teams he will have played for once the season starts? I’ll save you begin your count, after being drafted by the Grizzlies Barnes has played for the Clippers, Kings, Raptors, Knicks, and 76ers, Warriors, Suns, Magic, Lakers, and Clippers. He was recently traded to the Hornets and before donning a jersey for the 2015-16 season was dealt to the Grizzlies. Barnes has played for the Clippers twice during his career. If we looked up the term journeyman in the dictionary I’m sure Matt Barnes name is included in the definition.

Just as I finished the Barnes story along comes Luke Ridnour. Ridnour drafted by the Sonics in 2003 has played for 7 NBA teams prior to the 2015-16 season. Ridnour was traded four times in the space of a week beginning June 24th. NBA media claims Ridnour has a lucrative contract which makes him a valuable trade commodity. In any event it might be a good idea for him to maintain a packed suitcase, four teams in seven days must be a  a record.

The NBA draft had a Kansas City connection the number 6 pick Willie Cauley-Stein from Kentucky. The Kings chose Cauley-Stein who is actually from Spearville Kansas a small town of 700+ citizens. Spearville is 300 odd miles from Olathe (KS) a suburb of
Kansas City (MO). Cauley-Stein became friends with the son of former Chiefs lineman Will Shields after playing with him on an AAU team. Later Cauley-Stein would move in with the family. He would graduate from Olathe Northwest High School before heading off to Kentucky.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Free agency
At 12:01 a.m. Eastern time this morning NBA free agency became official, most players are likely to re-sign with their existing teams. Others will seek greener pastures either monetary, improved teams or the prospect of playing time.

You say what?
Who Do You Trust was the title of a 1950’s television quiz show, the late Johnny Carson served as host before his departure for the Tonight Show. Who do you trust in this instance refers to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith and the Knicks Carmelo Anthony. The first story; ESPN’s Smith says; “I was talking to my sources and they claim he’s (Anthony) furious with (Phil) Jackson’s decision.” Later reports indicate Carmelo Anthony calls the Kristaps Porzingis pick a steal on Instagram. Which Anthony response was correct, the one Smith communicated or the social media response?

Bits n Pieces
Do you choose the prize behind door number one or door number two? That’s the decision facing Larry Nance Jr. Last week the 6-9 forward was chosen by the Lakers as the 27th pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Earlier in the week the Harlem Globetrotters chose Nance, which team should we suppose will be his choice?

About a month or so ago Knicks, Liberty, MSG and Cablevision owner James Dolan hired Isiah Thomas as president of WNBA Liberty. In addition to president Thomas would become part-owner of the team pending league approval. The WNBA has handed down its decision; the attempt to become an owner would be suspended for an undesignated time-frame. The WNBA cannot prevent the hire of Thomas as president however ownership of a franchise is a far different matter.

Here’s a post-draft thought for you to consider. I’d long indicated either Karl-Anthony Towns or Jahlil Okafor was okay to me. Its evident Laker management had a totally different thought process than me. I have nothing but gut to back up this statement; I believe if the Wolves had selected Okafor the Lakers would have picked Towns. The selection of D’Angelo Russell indicates whatever occurs at the center position the Lakers intend to play a much speedier game. Towns is much swifter up and down the court over Okafor. I hope this is not seen as a knock at Okafor his skills lay in other areas on the court.

It’s difficult to be patient when you are a loser i.e. Knicks. Knick fans need to chill, a number of Knick fans want Phil Jackson gone and for Kristaps Porzingis to remain in Latvia. I believe Kristaps Porzingis (7-1 or 7-3? 220 pounds) will be a star unfortunately for Knick fans it’s going to be several years before they witness the finished product. Porzingis is a realist, hearing Knick fans boo his selection he acknowledges they were unhappy. Patience Knick fans time will tell.

Throwback
Remember Robert Upshaw, he was the troubled 7-footer dismissed by two schools Fresno State and Washington. He submitted his name for NBA early entry then a health issue cropped up, needless to say Upshaw was passed over in the June 25th NBA draft. The health issue is a non-issue having been fully evaluated; Upshaw’s maturity issues trumped anything related to health. Upshaw has been signed to play for the Laker Summer League team in Las Vegas. His shot-blocking skill might lead to a contract for the regular season.  From DraftExpress.com; "Very few teams question Upshaw's talent on the court.  It's his history of off-court issues that is scaring many away at the moment.  With thaat said, it is incredibily difficult to find a player in Upsahw's mold these days, so it won't be a surprise if someone decides to roll the dice and see if they get him on the right track."

The draft
Major League Baseball also conducted its draft recently. A local sports anchor discussing the Royals selection said; “The baseball draft isn’t very exciting.” It’s clear to me why and I’ll explain briefly. If we look at the NBA Draft we are sure any one selected in the first round will gain a roster spot immediately on an NBA team. As rookies they might not see a great deal of action but it’s highly likely we’ll see them play during their rookie year.
In baseball high school and college players are drafted, in the case of those in high school they could sign or decide to attend college. The collegiate players might simply decide to remain in school. In addition whether we are discussing high school or college players once they sign with a big league team they are immediately sent to a minor league team. Once a baseball player is in the minors we may or never see them at the major league level.
