Basketball from a fan’s perspective

No, don’t think I will
The end of the regular college basketball season witnessed a number of head coaching changes. For the most part the hires were a step up, in some instances the coach was fired by the administration. My original intent was to provide a complete list of those changes and almost immediately became overwhelmed. Although there is movement in the NBA currently there are only 30 teams, that’s a much smaller number to track.

At the university and college ranks there are 351 Division I programs, and about 300 playing Division II basketball. If I toss in NAIA schools that’s another 200+ teams, okay 900+ schools didn’t replace their coach however the list of new coaches in unfamiliar places is much larger than I first imagined. Please don’t consider this complete, I decided to profile a few schools and their new coaches: I added Cuonzo Martin’s name for a simple reason, he once served as head coach at Missouri State. He left for the head coaching job at Tennessee and later coached Cal and Mizzou and returns to his first head coaching job.

Louisville-Pat Kelsey
Michigan-Dusty May
Ohio State-Jake Diebler
Stanford-Kyle Smith
Vanderbilt-Mark Byington
Washington-Danny Sprinkle
West Virginia-Darian DeVries
Missouri State-Cuonzo Martin

I’m not greedy
You might not believe me however I can prove it, 3% of Victor Wembanyama’s earnings would satisfy me. That figure is based on his lifetime earnings because if he remains free of major injuries both of us will earn a great deal of money. When there have been story’s they provided details on his outstanding games in many losing efforts. Friday night was different for the Spurs, they managed to beat a good Knicks team in an OT game 136-126. This portion is most interesting, NBA block shot leader Wemby had but one block.

As for the balance of the box score he filled it up, a career high 40 points along with 20 rebounds and 7 assists. Wemby shot 60% from the floor and 44.4% from three. Wemby becomes the first rookie with a 40-20 game since Shaquille O’Neal accomplished it. I would be remiss if I failed to mention Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson, he scored 61 points in the game and he wasn’t just chunking up shots. He shot 53% from the floor and 39% from three. Brunson did all within his power to help his Knicks team, despite his outstanding effort they came up short. I’m sure Brunson is pleased with his game but certainly wanted a win over an individual accomplishment.

That ain’t me
I’m sure this has been mentioned in the past, I have individuals and teams of which I am not fond. Despite this fact I’ve been accused of being a hater when it comes to Kansas basketball, not true. I’m considered a hater of Clipper basketball, again not true. It seems I just might be the opposite, individuals and teams others seem to hate I love. I love Kentucky’s John Calipari, I also love Duke who continues to play top notch basketball.

Will Jon Scheyer be able to duplicate the Coach K.’s achievements, there are doubts? Despite this fact I appreciate Duke University basketball, I am looking as forward to the Class of 2024 Duke prospects as I am of Mizzou. I’m unsure if any scholarships remain however this potential assembly of talent for Duke is impressive. They have four 5-star and two 4-star prospects arriving in Durham in August. The number one high school prospect in the nation 6-foot 9 Cooper Flagg lands. For all you in Duke Nation Flagg will be at Cameron Indoor Stadium for two years, he reclassified into the Class of 2024 so he will be too young for the 2025 NBA Draft. Two huge centers come on board in the fall, 6-foot 11 235-pound Patrick Ngongba II from Fairfax Virginia along with 7-foot 1 250-pound Khaman Maluach from the NBA Academy South Africa…can you say Twin Towers?

Don’t take this as fact but the manner Cooper Flagg handles the ball I could see the coach moving 6-9 Flagg to shooting guard, I believe it might be a favorable for me to allow Scheyer to coach this team and figure out his lineup, moving on. We can add Isaiah Evans (6-6) and 4-star prospect along with Kon Knueppel (6-5) and 5-star prospect to the number. As you can see optimism continues to reign supreme at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

You know what time it is
It’s official…it’s Hate Lakers Time as they manage a stretch playoff run. That statement is funny in a sense because it’s always that time, in fact I believe it’s a 12-month of the year occasion by a number of folks. It’s not just fans this goes for those who serve as television analyst as well. Charles Barkley TNT, “I wish they would stop putting so many Laker games on the schedule” or somewhat similar words. ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins on NBA Today echo’s similar words to those of Barkley. You’ve read my share of complaints about the Lakers however mine come from a different area. I want them to win when they don’t I’m disappointed.

I’ve discovered Barkley and Perkins plus a legion of folks actually hate the Lakers even exist. That’s certainly not my view but I do understand the why. Sometimes jealousy (in the case of former players) I believe can be a driving force. Barkley has zero championships while Perkins has only one. As for the fans part of it over the years various Laker teams have dashed your team’s dream of having an NBA championship team to root for. Go on, continue to hate while I laugh whenever I read your letters of complaint. Despite your complaints about free throws or anything else you cannot change the past. On the other hand, anytime you decide to become part of Laker Nation you are most certainly welcomed. This is not an exclusive club chapters of Laker fans exist all around the nation and the world.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

This appears to be about right
I admitted my math shortcomings, I cannot verify if this information is correct. This appears to be about right based on my belief, these are not my figures so I cannot credit anyone again they are not mine:

2.9% high school seniors play college basketball
1.3% of those players are drafted by NBA teams
0.03% high school players are drafted by NBA teams

I remember this as if it was yesterday, I was made aware the high school sophomore I just met provided me a glimpse of his future. He informed me, “I want to go to Kentucky and play for coach Cal!” I certainly am in no position to rip apart anyone’s dream or hope. I knew upon meeting him this would not occur, I hadn’t seen him play but heard nothing about him on any recruiting sites. Unless he was a late bloomer heading to Kentucky this was highly not to occur. To end the story he was talented, the young man earned a scholarship to a Division II school. I am unsure if he graduated but there was no NBA, there was no Europe or Australia either.

It’s more than him
Jontay Porter has been in the news for the wrong reasons. The Raptors player has been suspended while the NBA conducts an investigation on his reported gambling. I’ve not read the detail, this is not intended to focus on Porter rather the past. I am old-fashioned, as mentioned previously gambling has always bothered me with its connection to sports. We could return briefly to the “Black Sox scandal” of 1919, gambling interest succeeded in attaching themselves to various White Sox players.

This effort was done to fix the World Series to the advantage of the gamblers. We could fast forward to the college basketball betting scandal, it would occur twice in 1950-51and 1960-61. There are other instances of sports gambling that managed to tarnish the game but those are the ones that stand out for me. We are at a point DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM and other sites have become tolerable in the eyes of the NFL, NBA and MLB management. I refuse to listen to those who will yell and scream about a sporting event being “fixed.” I’m like the little boy who sticks his fingers in his ears while loudly singing or humming in an effort to not hear the complaints.

No longer on the market
I’ve been reporting for nearly two years the Wolves franchise was being sold. Although Wolves and Lynx owner Glen Taylor was selling the teams he wanted them to remain in the Twin Cities. At a point in time a story hinted the Lynx might be moved but that apparently was untrue. As for the latest development the For Sale sign in front of the teams Taylor owns has been discarded. You are probably asking the question as I did…why?

This is what I read, owner Taylor claims baseball’s A-Rod and partner Marc Lore did not meet stipulations of the sale, based on this he indicated the team was no longer on the market. This is where the story becomes confusing, both A-Rod and Lore claim “they met the conditions Taylor wanted.” Despite the fact the teams are no longer for sale Taylor indicates he will continue negotiations with A-Rod and Taylor. I don’t know about you but that certainly sounds like double talk to me. “I’m not selling the team but intend to negotiate with the guys I claim didn’t meet the conditions of the sale.”

The importance of scouting…maybe
2017 the NFL Chiefs struck the mother lode in the draft. That draft saw the Bears choose Mitch Trubisky with the second pick, the ups on the advice of scouting reports moved up in the draft to acquire Patrick Mahomes. Since then Mahomes has been a consistent touchdown maker, he’s also led the Chiefs to wins in three Super Bowls. As for Trubisky he’s now with the Bills, he was unable to deliver at the level projected. In the NBA Damian Lillard a.k.a. Dame played his college basketball at Weber State in Ogden Utah, I’m quite sure in 2012 the question might have been asked…who? Was he simply overlooked based on where he played? There may have been a question about his ability however Lillard was made the number 6 pick in that draft

We could add Utah Jazz guard Jordan Clarkson to our list. Playing at Tulsa and later Mizzou he became the 46th player chosen in the second round of the 2014 draft. Clarkson was the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year in 2021. One more player for us to check out is now in the Naismith Hall of Fame. Without checking fully he might be the only NBA player Division II West Texas State A&M has ever produced. His name Maurice ‘Mo’ Cheeks the brilliant point guard for the Sixers of Dr. J., Moses Malone and others, the Sixers drafted him in 1978 with the 36th pick in the second round. There are other NBA players these are but a few who may have been overlooked by a few scouts at a point in time. One more consideration, we have no ability to see inside someone and their desire to succeed. In the instances detailed these players clearly had talent however some scouts assessing their potential couldn’t see the drive or the will to achieve.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

They are not that good
I’m not sure who began the conversation but I hope to clarify it. The UConn Huskies are good, they are very good, fact is they are my pick to win the NCAA Championship. They are not, I repeat they are not good enough to beat an NBA team. It seems every time a good college team appears on the horizon someone decides “They could beat an NBA team.” There is no method to provide you proof but trust me, it ain’t happening.

I refuse
The Lakers-Grizzlies game wasn’t on TV, I have no League Pass therefore this is a box score only account. I was aware ahead of time AD would not play in the back-to-back. That’s reasonable considering he’d played 53 minutes the previous night. LeBron missed the Bucks game but would play against the Grizzlies. What should Laker Nation expect, well allow me to state it int this manner…to play at a high skill level.

Going forward I refuse to anticipate the outcome of a Lakers game ahead of time whatever is left of the season. The 136-124 victory on Wednesday provided the Lakers their 5th win in a row. With no AD in the lineup it was LeBron’s turn to lead and he did just that with a triple-double, 23 points 14 rebounds and 12 assists. There is no doubt 39-year-old LeBron is not the LeBron we saw at 29 but his play is certainly better than players 10 years younger. Although the game was outstanding for LeBron he was not the top scorer for the Lakers, that honor went to Rui Hachimura. The Laker power forward scored 32 points along with 10 rebounds. D’Lo also chipped in with 23 points and Taurean Prince came off the bench with 15, Austin Reaves only scored 13 points but dished out 11 assists.

I ain’t projecting anything about the future for them however as this is written the Lakers are 9 games above .500 as they streak toward the playoffs. This almost seems to be a repeat of last season, the final question remains. Do they have enough to compete for the Western Conference crown? Do they have enough to contend for the NBA Championship? I hope you were not dependent on my to provide you an answer to either question.

Show me the money
Receiver Rod Tidwell screamed that statement at sports agent Jerry Maguire in the 1996 movie Show me the Money. That just as easily could have been Kentucky coach John Calipari. After meeting with the AD I’m sure Cal might have been prepared to leave if Kentucky was willing to pay him, perhaps the discussion never reached that point. As an outsider this is what I believe occurred in the recent past, Cal’s continued to recruit extensively young prospects.

There’s been little if any veteran presence on the roster to help the newcomers. So what occurs, Kentucky loses in the first or second round and the process begins over again. You might remember I wrote the number two recruiting class in the nation is headed for Lexington in the fall. I don’t believe Cal has forgotten how to coach, the landscape might have changed but not the coach. Expect Kentucky basketball to be competitive in the SEC next fall and winter, how far the NCAA run they make is unknown until we arrive there.

Nicknames
You might remember I once wrote nicknames that appear to be a thing of the past? That might not be the case all over, I submit the name Robbie Avila. Avila has placed Indiana State on our minds again thanks to his play and the Sycamores, not since the days of Larry Bird has much been written about Indiana State basketball. The clear leader of the team is 6 foot 10 Avila, he registered 17.3 ppg and nearly 7 rebounds during the season. An interesting aspect Avila is adept at passing the rock with a 4.1 assist a game average. Avila can play the game, the Sycamores believed they were NCAA bound but that was not to be.

The NCAA Tournament Committee decided to pass on Indiana State so they accepted an invitation to the NIT. Second to his outstanding play Avila’s managed to pick up a number of nicknames, they are Cream Abdul Jabbar, Larry Nerd, Larry Blurred or Milk Chamberlain are among the names. Let’s define these, I guess Cream because he’s a white guy. As for Larry Nerd or Blurred the glasses he wears are probably the basis for those. Milk Chamberlain, we have no idea if Avila drinks milk however he’s a white guy. Come on and laugh, some of the nicknames are funny while others might cause you to say, “What are they talking about?” In closing this should be of note, you cannot nickname yourself…someone else must bestow the name on you. As an example I never, ever refer to LeBron James as The King for this reason alone he gave himself the nickname.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

They did it again
The Bucks would be the opponent, early on I’d read LeBron wouldn’t play. A bum ankle would keep him sidelined, what could occur? The Lakers on the road minus their leader what should I expect but a loss only that’s not what happened. In double overtime the Lakers won the game 128-124. Can I say this was a team effort…yes I believe that would be an appropriate statement. AD played 52 minutes in the game scoring 34 points along with 23 rebounds and 4 blocked shots however there was help.

Austin Reaves registered a triple double with 29 points 14 rebounds and 10 assists, D’Lo also scoring 29 points and 12 assists. Rui Hachimura registered a “quiet” 16 points but also contributed 14 rebounds. Can we state this was truly a team victory, I think that would be correct. The effort put forth in this game by the Lakers wasn’t necessarily shocking but certainly surprising for me. Down by 19 points twice, this might provide you an idea why I am unable to gauge this Laker version so far. This is what I should do, sit back and enjoy what’s left of the Laker season and playoffs, yes I think that will be the plan.

Bob Kurland was omitted from the list of early Big Men which I wrote of on Saturday. Kurland played at Oklahoma A&M (Okla. State) from 1941-46, he stood 7-feet and 220 pounds. Unfortunately, I could locate no scoring or rebounding stats for him, after college he never played in the BAA nor NBA but must have compiled some impressive credentials. He spent his pro career playing for the Phillips 66ers one of several AAU teams active in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. Kurland was a 3-time AAU Champion and six times he was an AAU All American. He would be enshrined in the Naismith and College Basketball Hall of Fame.

I’ve had several opportunities to see Purdue’s Zach Edey in action. I continued to question why he’s not considered a legitimate NBA Draft pick. Read that again, I didn’t say lottery it was draft pick. He is not the swiftest guy up and down the court that is the truth, this is the portion I’m having difficulty with. I believe and I could be wrong he’s got 0 range on his shot therefore all the reports state “he’s not a legitimate draft choice.”

In the NBA teams will not toss ‘junk defenses’ at him as we see at the college level. Play in the NCAA Tournament should aid his cause, besides the fact his imposing size. At 7 foot 4 and 300 pounds he blots out the Sun. The latest nbadraft.net places Edey in the middle of the second round, nbadraftroom.com list him in the middle of the first round. Finally tankathon.com has Edey as the third pick in the second round.

There’s been little news on arena construction updates so I began a search. I found news from Oklahoma City regarding the planned arena to replace Paycom Center. You might remember last December voters in the city approved the plan for a new arena. Although no area location has been mentioned there have been updates on cost and additional related information. The minimum construction cost is projected to be $900 million, Thunder ownership has pledged $50 million toward the project. The arena has a planned opening for the 2029-30 NBA season. The Thunder make a commitment to remain in the city for the next 25 years, the year 2050.

Congratulations are in order
At the high school level its acknowledged in 2024 Cooper Flagg is the best in the nation. The 6-foot 9 200-pound small forward is listed as the number one prospect in the Class of 2024 by Rivals, 247 Sports, On3 and others unnamed. He attends Montverde Academy in Montverde Florida and is headed to Duke in the fall. On Wednesday Flagg was named the 2024 Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year. This is a huge honor in this aspect alone, Yahoo Sports claims there are 500,000 high school players across the nation who qualified for the award, to be honored in this manner indicates Flagg must be good.

This award places Flagg in some exclusive company, check out this list. Past winners include Karl-Anthony Towns, Jayson Tatum, Kevin Love, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. In the State of Missouri the winner is Jadis Jones New Madrid County Central HS, New Madrid Missouri. As this is written Jones has made no decision regarding a college. In Kansas the winner of Gatorade Player of the Year is TJ Williams who attends Wichita Heights HS, Wichita Kansas. Williams is remaining at home committing to Wichita State. I’m including Arkansas in the count, Annor Boateng receives the honor and is headed for Mizzou in the fall. A brief look at a few of the Gatorade Player of the Year honored.

This is the explanation
Stories have circulated for a while regarding the disproportionate number of free throws the Lakers take versus other teams. Is there a conspiracy at work here from the NBA along with its game officials? The numbers don’t lie, they do indeed shoot more free throws than the second-place team. Besides a conspiracy the question might be asked…why? I’m unsure about you but I’m not a conspiracy theorist. I’m uncertain how anything can be proven if we look at the number of fouls. After all fouls (or the lack of) are at the discretion of game officials.

Consider this fact, this Laker team (and maybe last season too) don’t attempt a substantial number of three-point shots in the same manner as other teams. For the most part the Lakers shoot in and around the basket certainly inside the three-point line. What might occur for a team with a perimeter game? Laker shooters are often fouled in and around the basket, even taking shots inside the line leads to a greater opportunity for the opposition to foul. Don’t misunderstand, there are instances I’m sure game officials have “swallowed” their whistles or didn’t see the play clearly. Just to clear this up Colin Cowherd of Fox Sports is to be thanked, he’s the one who pointed this out in an attempt to clear the confusion.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

Bits n Pieces
You Can’t Go Home Again was a 1940 novel written by Thomas Wolfe, Cuonzo Martin counters that by saying maybe you can. The last time we heard any news about Martin was his termination at Mizzou, he was replaced by Dennis Gates in 2022. Martin was head coach at Mizzou from 2017-2022 however Missouri State was his first head coaching job, he was in Springfield from 2008-2011. Good luck on your return to your first head coaching job.

Gambling on sports have been part of the culture since maybe the beginning. With legalized sports betting becoming popular I had concerns eventually an issue would surface. The first instance was in baseball with the Dodgers interpreter for Shohei Ohtani. I’m unsure whether it was Ohtani or Bickerstaff making news first. J.B. Bickerstaff Cavs coach revealed he’d received threats from gamblers last season. He turned the information over to the NBA. On Monday Raptors forward Jontay Porter was sidelined while the NBA began conducting an investigation involving him.

I believe all acknowledge the NFL rules the television airways. Why this move by the NFL is necessary I certainly cannot offer the why. The league announced two Christmas Day games are scheduled for December 25, 2024. This year December 25 falls on a Wednesday so the NFL will have played games every day and night of the week except Tuesday and Friday.

He’s referred to as a rising star, that is applied to Michael Grady. He was the play-by-play voice for the Mavs-Kings game last night. He made his debut with the TNT crew obligated to provide coverage for the NCAA Tourney. Although new to TNT Grady is no newcomer to broadcasting, he’s the voice for Wolves basketball and has an extensive background covering the NBA game.

Let’s discuss the why
I was talking basketball, which occurs quite often with me, among the things said by my friend. “People look at basketball and it’s ‘how many points did _______score?” I thought a further explanation was required, 99% of fans are not going to look at analytics you can forget that. What they see are points scored, rebounds, assists and shooting percentage that’s it. Most true basketball fans realize some form of defense is played whether we are discussing AAU, high school, college or the NBA. The problem without a great deal of effort most of us cannot see true aspects of the game. In a 12-year career for the Showtime Lakers Michael Cooper’s career comprised 8.9 points, 4 assist and 1.2 steals over that time span.

Ask Celtic great Larry Bird, he once claimed Cooper played the toughest defense on him in the NBA. That was his job to play tight defense against the opposing teams best player. Much later there was eccentric Dennis Rodman, often we focus on his rebounding and it was outstanding for a 6-7 athlete but there was the other thing. Rodman was a great defender, in his case ask Jazz power forward Karl Malone. If we look at the present time Marcus Smart is the name we often produce. Smart now plays for the Grizzlies, drafted by the Celtics his lockdown defense is what he’s best known for. There you have three outstanding defenders. They were supremely valuable to their teams however the numbers don’t provide you any idea of their significance. Sometimes it’s difficult but we must learn to see basketball is so much more than scoring baskets.

We now acknowledge the change
The NCAA Tourney is not over as this is written however the change is evident. We haven’t done a particularly decent job of acknowledging the change, no longer do super teams exist in the college game. At tournament time an eventual winner might have three or four losses. In the past we even had undefeated championship teams…so what happened? A bunch of things but I can point to at least two, they are Name, Image and Likeness plus the Transfer Portal. I claim no expertise in either area however they have impacted the game significantly. Teams can become competitive in a short space of time just picking up transfers aiding the assembled roster.

Want an example of effective use of the transfer portal, last season’s Mizzou team. After Cuonzo Martin was fired newly hired coach Dennis Gates was left with two or three holdovers, thanks to the transfer portal Gates quickly assembled a roster. The end result was a 25-win season far more than any so-called expert supposed might occur. There might be other teams however I’m closer to the Mizzou program so that’s why it comes to mind immediately. As for NIL we see the results there more recently. The NBA will shut down Team Elite after the season because they cannot compete due to NIL. There are college players earning more income than several NBA players. NIL is an inducement to steer prospects to one team over another. That ends my short soliloquy on the changes in college basketball I see, I’m quite sure there are others I might have missed.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

Bothersome
I didn’t discover the outcome until Monday morning, the score was the Lakers-Pacer game. It was available on NBA TV but I didn’t bother watching it, I have lost all confidence in this Laker team. The final score read Lakers 150 Pacers 145 so you would think I was pleased…I was only partially. The win places the Lakers in a better position to earn a slot for the play in tournament. The part unpleasurable was the final score, as evidenced by that you can conclude there wasn’t a great deal of defense played.  AD led in scoring with 36, LeBron and Spencer Dinwiddie had 26 points apiece while Austin Reaves scored 25.

The defense, how about this, the Pacers shot 55.1% and 50% from three. NBA TV re-runs games so I caught most of the third quarter and all of the 4th quarter. I wish this team could convince me they are among the NBA’s best, I’m just not sure at this point. Everyone improves however the Lakers routinely beat the Thunder and Kings as an example now both appear to be much better than my team. I will not root for the Lakers to lose, however, on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being high and 1 of course being low. The Lakers are a 5-6 for me currently.

I have doubts
There are occasions when I venture out and offer my view of an issue. That is the case here, in this instant this discussion centers on Kentucky’s John Calipari. The school’s flameout against Oakland in the NCAA Tourney has frosted the view of the coach in the eyes of many in Big Blue Nation. You and I have read reports of the school terminating his “lifetime” contract. Almost anything can occur including pigs able to fly, despite my last statement do we suppose Kentucky is willing to absorb a $33 million buyout?

That is the amount the school must pay to replace Cal as head basketball coach. That’s what it will require to terminate the contract the school agreed to. Let’s suppose Cal is tired of all the buzz surrounding his coaching and the losing in the NCAA Tourney. He could hold the administrations ‘feet to the fire,’ Cal could say “I’m not leaving until you pay me all the money due me.” He could agree to installment payments over time or the second scenario a smaller payout agreement. The smaller amount might be in the neighborhood of $15 million, or a possible third account. Despite the disappointing season at Kentucky I’m sure the coach has some allies remaining at the school. Implausible as it might appear there is another scenario that could occur. It is my belief there are basketball programs willing to hire Cal, suppose the University of _______ wants to hire him but cannot afford his salary. Do we suppose they could work out arrangements whereby they pay a portion of the buyout allowing them to hire the coach?

I’ve covered several different possibilities and don’t consider any of them concrete solutions. Finally there is this bit of information to consider, Rivals.com says Kentucky has the number two recruiting class for 2024 arriving in the fall. I understand that’s been one of the complaints about Cal and his youthful teams but you fire the guy when he’s recruited so extensively. Never say never but I believe Cal will be coaching Kentucky basketball when school begins in August, on the other hand I could be wrong, we shall see.

Watch me be wrong
My betting history is somewhat weak by most standards, it consists of Coca Cola, 7-Up or Jolly Ranchers, never any money on my part although several of you place huge sums of money on sporting events. As you can see by what I just wrote I don’t lose, if I pay for a case of Coca Cola or large bags of Jolly Ranchers that’s the extent. This disclaimer up front, please don’t take my word when placing wagers.

I agree with many others, there are no more super teams in college basketball for reasons we’ve discussed in the recent past. As to the why there are debates among you beginning with Name, Image and Likeness, One and Done along with the transfer portal plus other unnamed things. The UConn Huskies appear to be the best of the best men’s college basketball in 2024, could they be beaten…of course they can. We can question Kansas, Seton Hall or Creighton, all three schools managed to beat UConn during the season. I don’t believe anyone beats UConn on the road to a Back to Back.

DPOY
The headline reads Defensive Player of the Year, I used DPOY and was asked what it meant. I have no desire to write in code or be misunderstood in what is written. In any event Victor Wembanyama will not be named DPOY for the 2023-24 season although he could be based on his shot block skill. Rudy Gobert will likely be named DPOY again for the 4th time. Looking over past winners I noticed an interesting trend, the first two years the award was given out (1983 & 1984) Sidney Moncrief a guard was named the winner.

In 1986 guard Alvin Robertson was named the winner followed by Michael Jordan in 1988. From that point up till 1996 the front-runner was always a center or forward, guard Gary Payton was honored in 1996. From that point up to 2022 when Marcus Smart won DPOY you might note few guards have been named DPOY…the question might be asked why? In 41 years of NBA we find few instances when a guard’s name was placed on the trophy. I have no answer for the question I posed maybe you do. If you don’t have an answer maybe you might have a thought as to the why.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

I believe he is less than honest
Stephen A. Smith has failed to be honest with viewers of First Take or podcast listeners, there might have been more than one instance. This particular discrepancy leaps off the page at us because it defies an explanation. I am referring to the reported basketball career Smith points toward. I’m not going to discuss the tryout he claims occurred in front of ‘Big’ House Gaines Winston-Salem coach, it’s the other thing. All my life math has caused me issues, I never got the fundamentals which made me poor at math. Truth is I skated by algebra in high school, wouldn’t dare touch trig or calculus.

There is one area connected with math I brag about my ability. I learned early the proficiency at figuring out baseball batting averages, football rushing and passing yardage. Anything math basketball related I learned early to compute. How can a person average one point a game if you played but one game? All of us (most of us I guess) desire to be seen in a positive light. I say that and state to you there is no requirement to embellish yourself in order to look better in the eyes of others. If Smith was truly injured as he asserts just say that, quit claiming you averaged one point a game when we are unsure if you even played at all. Out of your mouth we’ve heard two different versions of your bio, which one is the correct account?

I might have missed this
The broadcaster for the Colorado-Marquette tournament game is Kevin Harlan, when I profiled him recently I might have failed to mention this fact. In addition to broadcasting NFL games for CBS and the NBA on TNT he’s got an additional role, he also broadcasts college games for the CBS Network as well. I profiled the fact this Kansas City area guy is rarely at home with the multiple roles he’s accumulated as a sports broadcaster. What do you suppose his peers think of him, I’m glad you asked?

*“In 2017, Harlan was voted by his peers as National Sportscaster of the Year by the NSMA. He again was voted National Sportscaster of the Year by the NSMA in 2019. He was also named 2019 National Sportscaster of the Year by The Athletic.” If you are wondering where this broadcast role begin it was quite early, as a professional he became the radio-television voice of the Kansas City Kings at the age of 22 after graduation from Kansas University. I’m unsure in this age if someone could be hired as a pro broadcaster at such a youthful age however there might have been other recommendations not indicated in Harlan’s bio.

You have my permission
Move me into the group of Kansas basketball haters, I give you permission. That’s what they call me…a hater because I attempt to call it as I see it, no sugarcoating here. Basketball at the Lawrence Kansas school has been exemplary generations. With that said that it must be the basis for many of the locals continue to lay accolades on a team that is clearly below par of past Kansas teams. Locally I am hearing excuses for everything that impacted Kansas basketball except Gonzaga was the better team Saturday afternoon.

These are just a portion of the excuses offered by Kansas City media. “Kansas wasn’t a very deep team” or “They lost a great deal when Kevin McCullars went out with injury,” “The altitude affected their play.” Finally the last one heard, “They don’t buy into the fact this is KU basketball,” for that individual I have a few words. Welcome to the world of college basketball version 2024, this group of athletes are not into the mystique of a program as those 10-15 years ago. They are looking for whatever they can acquire. If its NIL money or the NBA they are looking toward THEIR best options. This Bill Self Kansas team lost 11 games, that’s more than he’s lost in the 21 years he’s been at the helm.

The following are the coaches words, they are not mine, “I’ve been looking forward to next season for the last month” said Bill Self. That should provide us evidence the coach could see the handwriting on the wall, he had an idea a month ago this team would not be facing a long tournament run. I don’t ever remember a Kansas team getting blown off the court as this one was, they lost 8 of their last 9 games. On the other hand winning 23 games this season is certainly noteworthy but I guess in Jayhawk Nation it’s not enough for much of the fan base.

A name change
The history has been covered in the recent past however a revisit was required. I attempt to be as accurate as possible with the year, month or date of a historical basketball event. There is hope on my part this isn’t me but check out what popped up on my social media feed. “Denver changed to the Nuggets in anticipation of an eventual merger, as the NBA already had the Houston Rockets.”

The statement makes sense however it’s not quite correct, this fan must have written what he believed occurred. My research took me to a couple of sites, this from Wikipedia and other sites. “The team was founded as the Denver Larks in 1967 as a charter franchise of the American Basketball Association (ABA) but changed their name to the Rockets before the first season. The Rockets then changed their name again to the Nuggets in 1974.” As definitive proof this bit of information, the ABA-NBA merger didn’t occur until 1976.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

Turn in my card
I guess it must be time to turn in my card as a member of Laker Nation. I just cannot figure out what this current incarnation is doing, it seems all season long they have been on a roller-coaster as they go up for a number of games and then down for another. Over the last 10 games the Lakers have won 6 of them, which provides proof of my statement. It appears the Lakers have no problem scoring the ball it’s the lack of defense I’ve witnessed in a number of the games I’ve seen. Injuries-as with this writing fail to appear the chief problem,

LeBron and AD have missed time but the Lakers appear to play through when these two have been absent. Reserve Gabe Vincent and starter Jarred Vanderbilt have missed major time but not enough in my view to affect the record. Reserve Christian Wood has also been missing due to injury and there are issues regarding the effort of Jaxson Hayes. Finally we arrive at Darvin Ham, I’m not sold on him as a head coach. The constant lineup changes may have been a contributing factor to the up and down play of the team. I cannot change anything except my opinion so I will leave you with this, I might turn in my Laker Nation card.

The hot seat
SMU fired coach Rob Lanier after two seasons, he was 10-22 in his first year. The second year SMU won 20 games while losing 12 and received an NIT invite, despite the turnaround Lanier was fired. There were loud howls by many in Mizzou Nation to fire Dennis Gates with the same amount of time as Lanier. Fortunately for Gates there is no AD in place currently to fire him although I guess the assistant AD could perform the task if asked. I am reminding you once again of what was written last week about Bryce Drew the current coach at Grand Canyon. He’d been hired to lead the Vanderbilt basketball program.

Without checking I have no idea of Vanderbilt’s record however after three years on the job Drew was fired. Later hired by Grand Canyon his teams have won nearly 100 games in the three years since his hire. In addition the last two seasons the school has been invited to the NCAA Tournament. Older brother Scott Drew was hired by Baylor at a very dark time in the basketball history of the school. The first four years saw Baylor teams win 8, 9 and 4 games, he is now regarded as one of the best basketball coaches in the nation. What might have occurred if Baylor had decided to fire Drew after year four? Look folks each coaching situation is different and unique, all cannot be placed in the same pot. It appears schools perhaps under pressure seem to terminate contracts of coaching staffs much quicker than they once did.

Bits n Pieces
22-year-old Anthony Edwards of the Wolves could easily handle 61-year-old Michael Jordan on the basketball court. We could make the same statement regarding a healthy 28-year-old Karl-Anthony Towns, he would be light years ahead of 76-year-old Kareem Abdul Jabbar. I hope you comprehend how silly those two projections might be, at the same time they continue to be generated by some in the basketball world. It wasn’t claimed he was better however Edwards “was on the same level of MJ.” Why do these suppose matches continue to be generated, we have no way back machine to place either player.

Is this the Celtics year, I am sure my co-worker hopes that is the case. Rory is one of the few people in this part of the country that’s an acknowledge fan of the Celtics. I must admit they certainly look good, Jaylen Brown, Jason Tatum and Jrue Holiday plus Kristaps Porzingis certainly appear to be the best NBA team in the east. As this is written the Celtics are 56-14 and 11 games ahead of the Bucks, the question can they prevail this season? Do they break the tie with the Lakers for most NBA Championships, I’m sure Rory and others hope that is the case?

There is limited history
Recently I wrote that the NBA intends to shut down their G-League Team Elite at the conclusion of the season. NBA talent was produced however it was the other thing that impacted the team and caused its demise. We’ve discussed Name, Image & Likeness for a time now, it would become the driving force behind shutting down operations. As a reminder the intent of the team was to provide pro training for those young men with no college aspirations.

Instead of heading off to college and taking up classroom space they would be trained while earning an above average salary, that was 2020. The landscape has changed as we’ve noted, college freshman are now earning salaries far above what they might earn playing for Team Elite. You might ask is the training better for them in college or with Team Elite? I don’t know if this is a fact my best guess, training with NBA coaches might be more beneficial if that is one’s future destination. With so little operation time it might be difficult to determine the impact of Team Elite, below you will see a number of present-day NBA talent who began in the G-League with Team Elite:

Jalen Green – Rockets
Jonathan Kuminga – Warriors
Isaiah Todd – Wizards*
Dyson Daniels – Pelicans
MarJon Beauchamp – Bucks**
Jaden Hardy – Mavs
Scoot Henderson – Blazers
Leonard Miller – Wolves***
Sidy Cissoko – Spurs****

*Team Elite
**Wisconsin Herd G-League
***Iowa Wolves G-League
****Austin Spurs G-League

We are only four years down the road when Team Elite first began play. At this point I’m unsure if anyone can claim success of the program, it is noteworthy the number of players on NBA rosters that have begun play with G-League Team Elite.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

Are you busted?
Is your bracket busted, based on the tournament results so far this has been remarkably interesting. Kentucky and Auburn expected to go deep are early losers, those two team are the standouts off the top of my head. Every season we hear from folks who believe in re-seeding which confuses me. They propose this teams have begun play, just sit back and enjoy the games (or maybe not).

It’s his opinion
You are entitled to your own opinion, and so am I, Stephen A. Smith of ESPN is included too. What’s the issue, yours, mine and Smith can be off base. Sometimes the background fails to be taken into consideration. This is the major portion, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament Virginia took a beating from Colorado State 67-42. After such a terrible performance by the Cavaliers students are upset and so is the school’s administration and alumni as well. Also included in the legion of upset folks is one Stephen A. Smith however his take is a little different, I located the Smith quote he voiced on his ESPN program First Take.

“It’s not funny. I take no joy in saying this. But if it were me, I’d fire him. Strictly because of being boring. Literally. I’m not questioning his ability as a coach at all. He’s a national champion for crying out loud. I’m not questioning his ability to coach, but you cannot be that boring, that unappealing for so long, and get away with it.” For me those are strong words for someone unattached to the program. Coaches have been in trouble in the past that demanded they be fired, playing bland basketball is not one of them for me but it is for Smith.

This is the issue for me, I could say Smith’s program is uninspiring and contains little if any information of value. I could make this statement without calling for ESPN to fire Smith, you cannot fire someone for “playing boring basketball” or being terrible at your craft. It’s not occurred recently however Bennett’s won an NCAA Championship. I can inform you ahead of time there are 3-4 co-workers who will say, “Smith’s just looking for clicks.” If that is the case that compounds the problem for me, it says once again the TV guy has become part of the story rather than simply reporting. If you’ve read this blog any length of time you realize I have issues with Smith so you must consider this fact after my take. But we have the old adage to fall back on, “An empty wagon makes the most noise.”

He wasn’t the first
A story about teen Wilt Chamberlain arrived on my news feed, based on it I decided to conduct a little research. I wondered if there were any outstanding players standing more than 7 feet tall prior to Chamberlain’s arrival. The first item of interest for you, Chamberlain was not the first 7-foot player when he entered the NBA in 1958. If you are thinking George Mikan that’s not correct either, the Minneapolis Laker great was actually 6-10 however players his stature were not very skillful so perhaps him leading the Minneapolis Lakers to success is a contributing factor to his notoriety.

Early Big Men 7 feet and taller were Elmore Morgenthaler, he played for the Providence Steamrollers in the 1947 season in the 1948-49 season he was a member of the Philadelphia Warriors. Also listed is Ralph Siewert who was 7-1, he played for the St. Louis Bombers and Toronto Huskies in 1947. Siewert and Morgenthaler didn’t have much of a BAA/NBA career that’s why so little is known about them. Another early Big Man was Walter Dukes, he played from 1955-1963 for the Knicks, Minneapolis Lakers and Pistons. Dukes lifetime scoring average was 10.4 ppg and 11.3 rebounds. There may have been other Big Men besides the three researched, what is most interesting Mikan being considered a Big Man despite his height didn’t exceed 7 feet.

I still believe
Kentucky’s John Calipari is not popular with a great many college basketball fans, truth is he might not be well liked by some in the fraternity of coaches. As for me that’s a different matter, coach Cal will always remain a favorite of mine because of what he’s been able to accomplish. Some around the nation are laughing as I write this based on the loss to Oakland, the NCAA Tournament is fresh on everyone’s mind. As an example this statement is reported to have been made by him to one of his players. “If you stay here you will make me rich, if you go to the NBA you will make yourself rich.”

The evening of the NBA draft the television camera usually catches a shot of coach Cal at some point in the evening. He’s at the NBA draft due to the number of players produced at Kentucky, he far exceeds every other school in the nation. You say that might be Kansas basketball, I don’t think so. I’m taking someone’s figures but it's claimed there are 47 Kentucky players in the NBA produced by Cal teams. Bill Self teams at Kansas have been able to send 29 players into the NBA. For me it’s more than simply producing NBA talent, the coach will never be given the accolades he deserves in molding the futures for many young men.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

The Porter’s
Every time I see Michael Porter Jr. in action I think…Cuonzo Martin might still be the coach. As you are aware Martin is no longer coaching Mizzou because he couldn’t produce a continuous list of talent. MPJ might have been his greatest capture but it wouldn’t last. Despite the nearly 17 points and 7 rebounds he contributes to the Nuggets it’s the other stuff he does so well. He was the number one high school player in the nation when he arrived at Mizzou that fall. So what happened, his father is a basketball coach, in high school his coach was former NBA player Brandon Roy. As you can see he’s received valuable teaching lessons from those two before arriving at Mizzou…so what happened. MPJ hurt his back requiring surgery in the first game of the 2017-18 season.

He was able to return at the end of the season playing two games, there it is a total of three games for Mizzou. He was going to be a one and done athlete but missing most of the season my hope he returns for his sophomore year. As some are aware that would not be the case as he later declared for the NBA. Due to his back MPJ slipped to number 14 and picked by the Nuggets. They were aware he’d miss the upcoming season however they were okay with that. It was not only this Porter but younger brother Jontay, he was bigger in length (6-11) and heavier 240 pounds he played but certainly was raw but detailed evidence of talent. Just like his older brother he too sustained an injury and left Mizzou for the NBA with little serious time on the court. The Porter’s left Mizzou with so much promise but so little demonstration of that talent on the court.

The return of the Big Man?
Notice the question mark behind the headline, I ain’t sayin’ it’s coming but check this out. It is too early in the process except for one player Zach Edey. If they declare for the NBA draft we could have 4 Big Men in the 2024 draft including senior Edey, who are the others you ask? Donovan Clingan the UConn center, 7-2 and 265 pounds in the middle of his sophomore year, he could remain in school. We could also check Kyle Filipowski Duke center, Filipowski stands 7 feet and 248 pounds and is a sophomore.

This account is closed adding the name Kel’El Ware added to the mix of names, Ware is 7 foot and 223 pounds and he’s also in his sophomore year of school. Senior Edey is the largest player in this group of Big Men, he stands 7-4 and 300 pounds. Those named are draft projections anywhere between pick 13 up to number 33. The first thought, will the lure of the NBA plus large sums of money lead these pending college juniors to declare for the draft? It will be at least the middle of April the earliest we can expect a decision. The NCAA Tourney will be complete and that’s the time we should expect an answer on one or more of these players. There might be others but those named appear to be at the top of most lists.

The NBA banned list
This popped up on my news feed, a list of players and individuals receiving lifetime bans from the NBA. For these purposes I’m not going back to the 1950’s for a key reason. There was a miscarriage of justice for several players during this period. I’m going to begin in the 1980’s because it’s my belief these names are more widely known.

Permanently banned
John Drew – Hawks, Jazz
Eddie Johnson – Sonics
Chris Washburn – Warriors, Hawks
Roy Tarpley – Mavs
Richard Dumas – Suns, Sixers
Donald Sterling – Clippers owner
OJ Mayo – Bucks

Permanently banned but later reinstated
Tyreke Evans – reinstated in Feb 2022 but never returned to the NBA.

All the players listed were banned due to substance abuse, as for Donald Sterling it was a different manner. Conduct that was detrimental to the league is my term. Robert Sarver former owner of the Suns might have earned a spot. He was suspended for a year but later sold his interest in the Suns.

Breaking Barriers
Thanks to thousands of sources most American’s are familiar with the role Jack Roosevelt Robinson played in breaking the color barrier in baseball. For generations major league baseball refused to allow black players to play alongside or against white players. What is most interesting there was no rule in place prohibiting play by blacks it was an unwritten rule. In 1946 Branch Rickey of the Dodgers would sign Robinson and begin the process to integrate America’s game. That’s what it was back then the most popular sport in the nation. April 15, 1947, Robinson would make his major league debut and the balance of trepidation he suffered that first year is detailed in books and the 2013 movie 42.

Thus begins the change in America, the NBA referred to itself as a major league but not in the eyes of most. In order of popularity was baseball, college football, NFL and college basketball and the NBA. Perhaps due to its place when three black players begin play in 1950 they didn’t create the chaos of a Jackie Robinson. They certainly don’t have the notoriety of Robinson but they played just as vital a role in American history. Who played in the first game or who was drafted is not as important as the names. All have since passed away, they are Earl Lloyd playing for the Washington Capitols, Chuck Cooper Celtics, Nate ‘Sweetwater’ Clifton Knicks. All three have been honored and enshrined in the Naismith Hall of Fame in Springfield Massachusetts, because they broke barriers we should be familiar with the effort of these trailblazers.

Bits n Pieces
If this was any other year Thunder power forward Chet Holmgren would be named NBA Rookie of the Year. He’s stepped into the lineup and certainly only occasionally plays like a first-year player. Check this out, as of March 21 the numbers are certainly outstanding. 17.1 ppg along with 8 rebounds and nearly 3 assists on sparkling 54% shooting from the floor, he is also shooting a sizzling 39% from the three line. It’s really too bad in a sense, this is not the year for Holmgren to be saluted not with Wemby on the scene. He’s got one clear advantage over his counterpart, the NBA playoffs are looming in his immediate future. That certainly is not the case for Wemby.

Arkansas Gatorade Boys Player of the Year, that would be Annor Boateng. As noted earlier Boateng is a 6-5 205-pound shooting guard and hails from Little Rock Arkansas. It should also be of note this 5-star prospect is headed to Columbia in the fall to play for Mizzou. I along with the rest of Mizzou Nation certainly are quite anxious to see Boateng in action despite the fact I’m sure there will be a freshman learning curve.

For a guy who stood 6 feet 5 and ½ inches Charles Barkley was prolific rebounding the basketball. I bet you didn’t realize during his NBA career and considering his height averaged 11.7 rebounds a game. How did he accomplish the feat, it’s better if he explains it. “I always laugh when people ask me about rebounding techniques. I’ve got a technique. It’s called just go get the damn ball.” He was nicknamed “The Round Mound of Rebound” due to packing 252 pounds on his frame.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

It’s the tournament or nothing
All of them missed being selected for the NCAA Tournament. Based on that outcome they said thanks but no thanks when extended an invitation by the NIT Committee. I hope this is accurate and reflects those who decided to stay home, the list below are schools who passed on playing in the NIT. It's not extensive however it certainly is interesting, they are:

Indiana
Memphis
St. John’s
Pitt
Oklahoma
Ole Miss
Washington

So what occurred, a bunch of stuff which requires far more space than I have available. Who’s to blame the guys in Indianapolis in case you were not aware NCAA headquarters are located in the city. At a point in time only 32 teams were invited to the tournament, that leaves a considerable number of schools remaining. The NCAA in its infinite wisdom decided, “Why don’t we expand the tourney,” it was then doubled being expanded to 64 teams.

Later 4 more teams were added making for a total of 68 schools playing in the tournament. We are reading expansion once again, the tournament might be expanded between 76-80 teams. This provides us proof, if we can point the finger at anyone being the guilty party it would be the NCAA. They have continued to increase the number of teams in the NCAA killing practically all the competition for the NIT. The enduring NIT where we first saw former Knick Walt Frazier demonstrate his talent playing for champion Southern Illinois University in 1967. Instead of the National Invitation Tournament the initials now stand for the Not Invited Tournament.

No wonder
I’m unsure if this was posted earlier if it was this is just a slight different take. In mid to late January of the NBA season I asked Keenan to take a look at Victor Wembanyama blocking shots. After checking out the video he said “Wemby should be able to block shots he’s 10 feet tall.” That’s not quite correct he’s actually stands 7-4 but it’s easy to see why Keenan made the observation he did. I checked Wemby’s stats and in addition to his height he’s got an 8-foot wingspan. This has occurred more than once but I saw him block a Trae Young attempt and in blocking the shot he simply took it out of the air.

Blocking a shot in that manner certainly is more beneficial to the Spurs than spiking the ball in the stands to row 25 or 30. There is more to the story in blocking shots than we might first consider. A friend Alex responded in this manner, “Without a doubt having an eight-foot wingspan makes a difference when it comes to blocking shots. However, there’s a certain skill set that includes timing, agility and athleticism which all contribute to his ability to block shots.” Unlike yours truly, Alex played the game at a high skill level so I take his words for the insight they provide. In the future as Wemby continues to adjust his game to NBA play his block shot total might diminish. This reduction would occur should his scoring and rebound numbers increase. On the other hand his box score numbers might remain near the same.

On the other hand
Controversy appears to surround KU’s Kevin McCullers Jr., it was hoped if rested he would be ready for the tip off against Samford tonight. Monday Bill Self announced McCullers wouldn’t play this game or any other if KU manages to advance, so what occurred? One source I’m reading claims the KU medical staff cleared McCullers to play but evidently there is a pain tolerance issue for him or is there something else going on.

I cannot open up someone's skull and figure out what they are thinking but I will attempt to do just that, here goes. There are three NBA mock draft sites and all project McCullers as a first-round pick, they expect him to be the 13, 18 or 19 pick. Now we realize a players stock can rise or fall prior to the June NBA draft. This is a fact, many athletes aware they are going to be drafted skip working out for teams. In addition they allow the NBA Draft Combine to pass without them attending. Should we suppose McCullers might be more concerned about dropping in the draft if his performance is so-son on the court? Could we presume the prospect of aiding his Kansas team over an NBA future...we could guess the NBA wins.

NIL
I try and avoid discussing $$$ in this blog for a simple reason. As much as I love sport there is no doubt a substantial number of athletes and coaches are overpaid. Recently we discovered former Alabama coach Nick Saban was in the nation’s capital to discuss issues surrounding Name, Image and Likeness. Saban claims the entire program is “out of control,” and consider this fact. I am no expert nor do I claim to be however I can see what’s in front of me.

In the recent past payments to college football and basketball coaches began rising steadily. As an example Saban the guy who claims NIL is out of control consider the fact from College Football Network. “So, Saban had a stable salary of $1,105,000 each year. However, the Alabama head coach made the bulk of his salary through something called a talent fee. For 2022 and 2023, that fee was $9,595,000, which is why his 2023 salary matched his 2022 amount.” Let’s check out a few college basketball coaches, these are one year’s worth of salary:

Mike Woodson Indiana $4.2 million
Bill Self Kansas $9.6 million
Kevin Williard Maryland $4 million
Bobby Hurley $3.1 million
John Calipari $8.5 million

The sweat and toil of the athlete is the basis for these coaches to receive these jumbo salaries far above most laborers. This is certainly not my intent to disparage the coaches for the most part it’s my belief the schools are making the offers. On the other hand the salaries could be based on the amount another coach is being paid. My problem is guys like Saban who express concerns without looking inward first. Oh well, I indicated no expertise in this area, if you have more than me good for you.
