It appears he’s history---Several websites are reporting Wichita State will fire Coach Gregg Marshall soon in fact it could occur by the end of the week.  The veteran coach has been under investigation for several past alleged charges of abuse and the mass defection of players from the school.  We don’t have the complete picture as this is written, this we do know the fact Marshall is a winner.  Marshall’s been head coach at the school since 2007, he’s compiled a 331-121 record (.732) over time.  His 2013-14 team finished the season with a 35-1 record after finishing the conference with an 18-0 record. 

The single loss that season occurred in the NCAA Tournament Round of 32.  Wichita State has experienced nothing but winning basketball during his tenure, there is more to coaching in this age than simply winning.  The “Bobby Knight” mentality is no longer permitted and even Knight was eventually fired after numerous confrontations with game officials and the administration.  Who takes over with the college basketball season a little over a month away?  It’s likely an assistant will be announced as interim coach and a permanent replacement will likely be made in late spring or the summer of 2021.  

“Houston, we’ve had a problem” --- Those are the words uttered by astronaut Jack Swigert as Apollo 13 was headed to the moon, this time the Houston problem is a little closer to terra firma.  In fact, this difficulty is located at 1510 Polk Street Houston, that is the address of the Toyota Center.  The Rockets have a brand-new coach Stephen Silas and players James Harden, and Russell Westbrook are complaining already.  The complaint by both is not about the coach but their belief the window for winning an NBA Championship is rapidly closing. 

Therefore, I’m confused (and are most Rocket fans), Daryl Morey along with Mike D’Antoni were the architects behind the move acquiring Westbrook.  Early James Harden pronounced the deal no problem because the two had known one another since their high school days.  Well needless to say the paring didn’t exactly work out as hoped because management decided to blow up the team by going to a “small ball” lineup.  New Coach Stephen Silas has his hands full trying to figure out what to do with this inherited problem.  As this was being completed, we read Westbrook wants the Knicks or other teams over the Rockets, Houston, we really have a problem! 

Now I’m not so sure---The 2020 draft has completely messed with my head.  You might remember I gave 1001 reasons (not really) why I believed the Warriors would draft Memphis Big Man James Wiseman.  A week or so from the draft I’m not sure, see a new player has emerged whom they might consider, the athlete is Deni Avdija 6-foot 8 small forward from Israel.  The Warriors brought him into the city and were thrilled with his workout, is he the pick?  He could be however so could Wiseman or Anthony Edwards.  Rest assured the Warriors are not going to draft LaMelo Ball and it has little to do with the belief or feelings of one LaVar Ball. 

Bits n Pieces---This is a first for Gonzaga basketball, the Associated Press in its pre-season poll announced the number one college basketball team in the nation is the Gonzaga Bulldogs.  The Spokane Washington school has played competitive basketball for several years under Coach Mark Few.  The ultimate number one of course occurs in early April when the NCAA Tournament champion is crowned.  This is the first time Gonzaga has earned the top spot at the beginning of the season.    

An announcement came late Monday afternoon, Michigan State basketball Coach Tom Izzo tested positive for coronavirus.  The coach claims he has minor symptoms and is unsure where he might have contracted the virus.  Izzo indicated he’s been wearing a mask, maintaining social distance has been common practice for him, get well coach. 

Is it television or real life, Ball in the Family television series dad LaVar Ball exploded in a recent episode when a decision was announced?  We’d mentioned earlier youngest son LaMelo about to be drafted into the NBA decided to sign with Puma leaving the Big Baller Brand.  LaVar uttered a profanity on hearing the news, whether it was aimed at the son is unclear.  The point is the response by many reading the news account, they questioned the decision by family members Lonzo to possibly sign with the Jordan brand and LaMelo with Puma.   

I just read one of the funniest lines yet involving the Raptors.  We know the issue with the Canadian border closed due to COVID-19 and the need for an American home.  We’ve mentioned the cities vying to serve as temporary home for the Raptors.  A fan wrote, “They (Raptors) could play in Madison Square Garden, there’s no basketball being played there.”

A legend---I stated previously the term legend is often overused, in this instance speaking of the Celtics Tommy Heinsohn it fits him to a T and is certainly worth linking Heinshon and Legend together.  Heinsohn died on Tuesday at the age of 86 the cause of death is unknown as this is published.  He would spend an amazing 64 years associated with the Celtics in some capacity.  Heinsohn played for the Celtics from 1956 to 1965 and later he coached them from 1969 to 1978.  A championship player during the Bill Russell era, a championship coach in 1974 and 1976.  Heinsohn’s final stint with the Celtics was his work as color commentator for the teams broadcasts.  Although he played and coached for the hated Celtics this member of Laker Nation says job well done Tommy, R.I.P.  

A correction---The information contained in our Monday account regarding the Thanksgiving Hoopfest is changed, not only that participating teams and dates have also changed.  After the Monday edition was published, I made the decision to exclude the account.  Please note participating teams, location, and revised dates.   Teams are YSPI Prep (Michigan), Duncanville, St. Marks, and John Paul II. 

The location of the games is now American Airlines Center in Dallas and the date is Saturday November 28.  The schedule indicates St. Marks and John Paul II will play at 6:00 p.m. Central Time and Emoni Bates YSPI Prep team will face Duncanville at 8:00 p.m.  It’s highly likely ESPN or one of the other sports networks will likely televise the games for those living outside the Dallas Metro.  The television however is yet to be confirmed, as additional information is available it will be communicated to readers of the publication.   

“No Kawhi watch this time” ---The time of the year is different however the subject is the same, everything is compressed in 2020 even free agency which begins November 20.  Teams can begin conversation with free agents but cannot sign them until November 22, with such a short turnaround time that would lead us to believe tampering will not exist.  As for the headline it’s based on last season free agents, many in Laker Nation held their breath waiting for the apparent signing of Kawhi Leonard or Paul George. 

As you are aware, both did an end run on the Lakers signing instead with the Clippers.  Naturally, a bunch of Laker fans were totally disappointed however it didn’t endure especially after the Lakers captured their 17^th NBA Championship and first since 2010.  As they would say, “word on the street” the Lakers have quietly begun talks with potential free agents.  In this COVID-19 climate era players are likely not flying into Los Angeles which makes the process even more stealthy.  At this point, we have no idea which free agent(s) the Lakers might sign but rest assured Rob Peilinka and company are diligently at work. 

Stay in School---The NBA Draft has changed over the years, one and done has become the norm for many who believe they are ready to play at the next level.  Athletes tend to spend their freshman year in school and then declare for the draft.  As for others they often are unsure, Ja Morant played through his sophomore year at Murray State before declaring for the draft.  Although the latter two scenarios most often occur many decide they require four years of basketball before heading for the NBA. 

6-foot 2-inch point guard Payton Pritchard for his own reasons decided to remain in school.  If you are unfamiliar with the name Pritchard played his college ball at the University of Oregon and he’s NBA ready.  Scouting reports indicate the only negative regarding Pritchard might be his athleticism and potential, if there is a concern it might be potential which we unsure exactly what that entails.  In closing don’t be surprised to hear Commissioner Silver or Deputy Commissioner Tatum utter his name. 

The non-com---COVID-19 has impacted college football this fall and will continue into the basketball season.  Mizzou’s annual Braggin’ Rights game versus Illinois was cancelled earlier, as for the balance of the non-con schedule it certainly could be considered “liquid” at this point.  Non-con games could be added while COVID-19 might cause other games already on the schedule to be subtracted.

Another "player"---There are so many suitors to become substitute home of the Raptors it’s going to be easy for the owners.  You are aware of the story, with COVID-19 raging in this country the Canadian border is closed, it was Blue Jays baseball played in Buffalo.  The Raptors played in The Bubble so there was no issue regarding the completion of the NBA season and into the playoffs.  What about the 2020-21 season would become the next question? 

It should be easy to make a choice on which city to pick, the latest to step forward is the City of Nashville Tennessee.  Bridgestone Arena located in downtown Nashville is a 20,000-seat multipurpose arena and serves as home to the NHL Predators and the SEC post-season basketball tournament.  So, the count continues, we have Newark, Louisville, Kansas City, Tampa Bay and now Nashville in the running, did I miss any city?   

Are they trying to fool us? ---The evidence is in front of our face, with the second pick in the 2020 NBA Draft the Warriors will choose James Wiseman.  Am I sure, of course not this picture could change in the next two weeks however it’s a perfect team for Wiseman for several reasons?  Although parts of his development has been hindered, he checks all the boxes.  Wiseman is a 7-foot 1-inch 240-pound Big Man but has range on his shot out to the 3-point line.  Elements of his offensive arsenal need an upgrade but would appear to be no hinderance to his NBA development.   

Wiseman is a defensive specialist who loves to block shots and play defense.  Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and others provide the greater portion of the Warriors offensive scheme there is no requirement to run the offense through Wiseman except as a passer.  As usual with little to reference scouts fall back to a player we’ve seen in the past, in this instance one scout indicates “David Robinson like.”  Many of you might remember the long-time Spurs center who played at the U.S Naval Academy prior to his NBA career.  As usual I allow you permission to laugh at me in two weeks if I’m wrong, I will remind you later of this account.

In case you missed it---We questioned attendance at college basketball games once the season begins.  This latest announcement is likely to be utilized by several colleges and universities across the nation.  The University of Kentucky in compliance with local health ordinances will allow 15% capacity in Rupp Arena for basketball games, that figure amounts to about 3,000 fans per game.  We certainly have no idea how this will affect high school sports around the county, but we could see other colleges and universities adopting a similar attendance policy for basketball games.  

A change---There is a change for the upcoming high school tournament we announced earlier this month.  The game billed as the Basketball Battle Showcase will be held November 20 and 21 in the Allen Event Center in Allen Texas.  Allen is a city located in the metro Dallas-Fort Worth area.  Featured athletes will be Emoni Bates top 2022 high school prospect and LeBron James Jr. nicknamed Bronny. 

November 21 James Sierra Canyon team will face Bates and his Yspi Prep Academy team.  Additional teams participating in the basketball showcase are Hillcrest Prep (Arizona) and Sunrise Christian Academy (Kansas).  Can’t fly or drive to the area, no worry regarding that issue.  The early indication is the game will be televised; the network is unknown as this is written.  If I were to make a guess, I would believe ESPN over Fox Sports or CBS Sports Network.   

Publishing---It’s been mentioned more than once basketball activity occurs 12 months of the year and it does.  In a “normal calendar” year news slows in the summer but picks up in the fall and winter.  2020 with the pandemic has witnessed a change, Words eye view was published daily until this week.  Now we are fully into fall high school and the collegiate season will begin, as this is written the NBA will not return until December or January.  Currently publishing dates are Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.  This will continue up through the end of January, at that time daily publishing will likely begin once again.  I appreciate you continuing to read the ramblings of this confessed basketball addict.   

NBA Territorial Pick---The NBA Draft was quite different in the 1950’s through 1965, teams had the opportunity to choose territorial picks in the draft.  Wilt Chamberlain played at Kansas, yet the Philadelphia Warriors were able to draft him.

Who are just a few of these territorial picks, they read like a who’s who of the Naismith Hall of Fame with 11 being honored?  Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, Bill Bradley, and Dave DeBusschere were territorial NBA picks.

The 2020-21 NBA season---The NBA began playing an 82-game schedule in the 1967-68 season, the number of games was increased that season as the league expanded to 12 teams.  The NBA has continued to play an 82-game season despite the increase in the number of teams which today totals 30 in the U.S. and Canada.  Several years the NBA managed to play fewer than 82 games, this was due to labor issues between owners and players.  The 2020-21 season beginning December 22, 2020 will see a shorten season due to the pandemic, NBA teams will consist of a 72-game schedule.

King of analytics---Could I inform you I’m not impressed with Daryl Morey?  If you are unfamiliar with the name, he is the new president of the Sixers, he’s been with the Rockets since 2006 and general manager from 2007 until recently.  There is no hatred or anything that serious it’s the job performance by Morey.   October 15, he resigned as general manager of the Rockets and November 2 he was hired as president of the Sixers.   

Reading his education, we might believe he is in the forefront of the analytics group.  Former NBA player Charles Barkley and I don’t agree on numerous things, we do on the issue of analytics.  I don’t understand it however that’s not the question, my subject might be has Morey won anything utilizing analytics?  We realize it is not his job to score baskets or rebound the basketball however I’m not exactly sure what makes him such a hot shot front office person. 

NBA draft---As this is written we have days remaining until the NBA draft, this is a check from our two sources of knowledge.  These are nbadraftroom.com and nbadraft.net, the top choice or projected number one will be shooting guard Anthony Edwards from Georgia.  Edwards will be selected by the Wolves; Edwards will probably move into the starting lineup replacing Malik Beasley.  Both polls also agree with the second pick, they indicate Israeli forward Deni Avdija is likely the second pick to the Warriors.  Picks three and five are not the same however both polls are projecting LaMelo Ball to the Bulls as the number four choice.  As we move closer to the November 18 date an update will be provided.   

Whatever comes up comes out---Several believe I’m a Skip Bayless hater that is not the case.  This is Bayless of Fox Sports prior to the start of the NBA season, “This will be LeBron James toughest NBA Championship.”  This is Bayless immediately after the NBA championship, “This was LeBron James easiest championship.”  We realize Bayless had no idea in October the NBA would shut down in March and would not restart until late August. 

Bayless had no idea if The Bubble would work.  In conclusion he says this was an “easy” route to an NBA Championship?  In addition to the physical part I wonder if he realize the Lakers (and Heat) were disconnected from their families for up to three months.  Bayless is certainly entitled to his opinion but sometimes placed together they don’t make a great deal of sense.  Perhaps Bayless should stick to the NFL, it appears he's got a view of the NBA but lacks basic knowledge.   

This is difficult---Chris Paul might be the best choice, the downside his huge contract says it is not possible to add him to the Laker roster.  Money aside there are three free agent players I believe the team could add plus financial stability could still be maintained.  Piston point guard Derrick Rose, he’s 32-years old meaning he’s should have several years ahead of him.  He’s a good three-point shooter but probably ranks at number 3.  Next, we have Pacer shooting/point guard Victor Oladipo, he’s only 28-years old. 

The downside Oladipo has injury issues but is an exceptionally reliable 3-point shooter.  Last, we have Jordan Clarkson who the Lakers had at one point, a different front office traded this talented guard.  He’s last on the list but that has nothing to do with ability rather finance, the 28-year old would have the largest contract of the three. It should be of note Clarkson would be the best 3-point shooter of the bunch.  I believe a point guard over any other position, one of them would start with Rondo playing a reserve role.

Say what? ---As preparation for the NBA Draft I was checking out individual prospects.  Naturally, it was playing coach and general manager for the Lakers, they need a young point guard who can shoot.  A scouting report caused me to laugh out loud, the description of a 6-foot 1-inch guard read; “He’s on the smallish size.”  The great Laker guard Jerry West only stood 6-foot 2-inches tall, most guards of the period were the same size of West and even smaller?  West might have been the forerunner of today’s combo guards, those who could shoot and distribute the basketball. 

West came along a few years behind Hall of Fame point guards Bob Cousy who was 6-foot 1 and Slater Martin stood but 5 foot 10.  Oscar Robertson arrived in the NBA in 1960 and he stood an amazing 6 foot 5 inches, at that his height alone meant he was a tailor made small forward.  Over succeeding years bigger and bigger point guards arrived in the NBA most even taller than Robertson.  Magic Johnson at 6 foot 9 and Penny Hardaway at 6 foot 7 would eventually lead to LeBron James (6-9) and more recently Ben Simmons (6-10), we might dispute if LeBron is really a point guard.  We conclude this account with a reminder, an athlete over 6 feet tall designated as “small.” 

What I believe---It’s true, what I believe and what might occur are two different things.  Management and the players association have gone back and forth on a start date for the 2020-21 NBA season.  This is what I believe will occur, the season will start on or close to December 25.  LeBron and several other veteran players will borrow from the Clippers, they will utilize “Load Management” up to some arbitrary date in January and then begin play.  Let’s take a check, NBA teams missing the playoffs have experienced the longest off season in history. 

The Hawks, Warriors and others haven’t played a meaningful game since March of 2020.  As for the Lakers and Heat their off season began October 6, a December start for them is about two months and days turn around.  Any team earning a playoff berth is naturally concerned about such a short off season.  NOTE: The news moves faster than our published dates, late word Wednesday indicates the players association will likely sign off on a December 22 start.  As additional details are known they will be communicated.   

Sometimes we must believe the hype---As we inch closer to the 2020 NBA Draft, I haven’t made mention of Anthony Edwards except to detail where he might fall in the draft.  The reason is I wasn’t impressed, allow a further explanation.  In action last January versus Mizzou Edwards ended the game scoring 23 points, Mizzou’s lockdown defense held him to 9 for 24 from the floor and 3-12 from the 3-point line.  If Edwards can be held up in this manner by a stingy Mizzou defense how is he going to perform against veteran NBA talent? 

To be fair to Edwards we must return to the past briefly, a co-worker told me about an outstanding basketball player he’d seen play in the NAIA Tournament.  I made sure to see this player based on my friends’ comment, well the game was terrible, didn’t shoot well plus turned the ball over.  In any event he failed to impress me, that player would later be drafted by an NBA team and had a decent career for several years.  In closing perhaps, I saw Edwards in action when he had a migraine or something else was bothering him.  I will wait until Edwards arrives in the NBA before attempting to pass judgement.   

The county---I’m unsure what occurs in your local area but in Jackson County MO (Kansas City) the health department made an announcement which impacts sports programs in the county.  The health agency recommends a cancellation of winter indoor sports wrestling, volleyball, swimming, and cheer along with ice hockey.  Naturally, this measure impacts boys’ and girls’ basketball too.  What is unknown at this point if schools intend to follow the guidelines. 

Memory indicates a similar recommendation was made regarding football however several schools chose to play their schedule anyway.  The statement went on to indicate due to the pandemic there is no effective method to protect student-athletes.  Most high school basketball gyms are packed to the roof line with a raucous cheering student body.  The athletes and game officials might be in a safer position than sitting in the stands during a game.

Billy Tubbs quote--- The late Billy Tubbs who died on Sunday always had a snappy quote and this is just one of many:

“This year we plan to run and shoot.  Next season we hope to run and score.”

 Is it just talk? ---Word on the street, former Memphis center James Wiseman wants no part of the Wolves.  In this instance it’s not a cold weather issue or anything else its location, location.  In this instance the Wolves might resist drafting Wiseman, they have Karl-Anthony Towns in the lineup.  The scouting report indicates Wiseman not an ol skool back to the basket center, but he is that…. a center.  

With center being his best position and All Pro Towns entrenched at center you see the dilemma, not twin tower duo pending here.  That leaves us with Towns at the center position and the Wolves making some sort of move.  Will an arrangement be made with another team; they draft Wiseman and then the picks are exchanged?  It certainly wouldn’t be the first time, in 2018 Luka Doncic was drafted by the Hawks and Trae Young by the Mavs.  The picks were swapped, much earlier in NBA history the Sonics drafted Scottie Pippen and the Bulls Olden Polynice.  Pippen never wore a Sonics jersey, his rights were traded to the Bulls.   

“What we’ve got here is failure to communicate” ---That is the line from Cool Hand Luke the 1967 movie classic, it just might apply to NBA owners and the leagues players.  It appears the owners want a December season start while the players prefer a January date.  Who wins, that is yet to be decided. The two parties are communicating the problem there is no meeting of the minds on a start date.  Owners are looking at losing large sums of money while the players are concerned about the wear and tear on their bodies.    

No decision yet---The start of the 2020-21 NBA season and the decision by the Raptors is yet to be decided.  We mentioned the possibility the Raptors moving to Kansas City for at least one season.  Well another name’s been added to the mix, Newark and the 19,500 seat Prudential Center is mentioned as a possible destination.  Despite the fact Kansas City might lose if Newark is the decision it makes sense on several levels. 

Newark is much closer to Philadelphia, Boston, Knicks, and Nets than Kansas City or Louisville.  Travel time (and cost) would be cut considerably flying from Newark to these other Atlantic Division foes versus flights from Kansas City or Louisville.  Despite my hope for NBA basketball to return to Kansas City it doesn’t look very promising at this point.  The only question, would New Jersey fans support a team they were aware would only be at play one season in the Prudential Center? 

Age is just a number---If you continue a work task while another has long since left it indicates two things, 1. You are good at performance and 2. You really love what you do.  That is the case if we look at many of the OG’s present in today’s basketball world.  First up is Dick Vitale longtime college basketball analyst for ESPN/ABC.  We could claim he is semi-retired because he’s managed to cut down the number of telecast, he is involved in over years past.  Vitale turned 81 years old this past June, if there is a college season expect to see him in some capacity with his classic basketball terminology.  Diaper dandy, Aircraft Carrier and dipsey-doo are just a few we often hear during a telecast featuring Vitale.   

Hubie Brown at 87 must be the dean of all, this former NBA coach is now an analyst for ESPN/ABC and been in that role for several years.  He’s been a coach then a broadcaster and finally a coach again, we have lost track on how long he’s been broadcasting all together.  We didn’t witness typical Spurs basketball this past season, that is no reflection on 71-year old Gregg Popovich.  Pop is just as sharp and full of spunk as he was in 1996 when he took on the reins of head coach of the Spurs.  Look for Pop on the sidelines when the NBA season begins in January 2021.  Marv Albert who turned 79 in June is now working exclusively for TNT he was the long-time voice of the Knicks prior to his association with TNT. 

78-year old Jim Calhoun retired in 2012 after 26 years at UConn and several NCAA Championships.  The coach couldn’t stay away from the game or retired, in 2018 he became head coach at the University of St. Joseph a Division III program in Connecticut.  Jim Boeheim now 75 is preparing to retire at Syracuse after heading the program since 1976.  Anytime we hear booing and hissing it’s because haters don’t like Coach K.  All Mike Krzyzewski does is win and win and win…did I say win?  Carolina’s Roy Williams might be the baby of the bunch at 70 years of age.  Coach Roy is revered in basketball circles excepting for Kansas, many in Jayhawk Nation believe he betrayed them when he left to coach North Carolina basketball.  There are others we probably missed however these guys are saying “Don’t put us out to pasture until we are ready.”

Another legend gone---We are often guilty of overusing the term legend, but that’s what Billy Tubbs was.  The former coach most associated with Oklahoma basketball died on Sunday of leukemia, he was 85-years old.  We can state with certainty before his arrival in 1980 the school’s football program was the sport of choice by most in Oklahoma.  He made those in the Sooner State sit up and take notice with “Billy Ball” his fast-paced brand of basketball.  While at Oklahoma his teams would win over 300 games and play in the NCAA Tournament or NIT every season. 

After leaving Oklahoma Tubbs would coach TCU and finish his career at Lamar University.  From 1971 when he began coaching through his last season in 2006 Tubbs never experienced a losing season.  The internet is full of quotes by the quick-witted Tubbs who always managed to provide humorous commentary on the game he coached and loved.  He was serious about winning basketball games, an example follows.  In a 1989 game between Mizzou and Oklahoma Tubbs upset with the officiating had earlier received a technical, the raucous crowd began throwing objects on the court.  Game officials requested Tubbs use the P.A. system to address the assembly and request they stop throwing objects on the court.  The link below is classic Billy Tubbs, by the way he was ejected after the announcement.  Place the link below on your browser.

Boy is he skinny---Over the weekend I had an opportunity to witness Chet Holmgren play.  His Team Sizzle was in action against Team Storm in the Top Flight Invite AAU Tournament.  Allow me to say this up front, I would rather see a prospect in a regular high school game over AAU competition but that’s me.  As for my scouting report Holmgren appears to be a legitimate 7 foot 1 (on television at least) but boy is he skinny.  Rivals, ESPN100 and several other sites indicate he checks in at 195 pounds which is practically skin and bones with his height.  The commentator did indicate that is an increase in his weight, he was in the 180-pound range last season. 

Holmgren certainly has shooting range in line with many of today’s Big Men, he’s got a 3-point shot.  Because the Lakers Anthony Davis was mentioned during the telecast, I decided to check his stats at the time he was drafted in 2012.  Davis stood 6 foot 10 his present height however it was 222 pounds versus the 253 he weighs now.  Holmgren list has been reduced to 7 schools under consideration.  As for the weight issue, we’ve got to believe wherever he decides to attend college a strength and conditioning coach will work with him.  Holmgren led the way as Team Sizzle defeated Team Storm, he registered 18 points 18 rebounds and 12 blocked shots. 

NBA connection---Stephen Silas Rockets coach had an NBA connection early in life.  We are not referring to him serving as an assistant coach at several stops.  The reference is toward his father, Paul Silas was a former NBA player and longtime NBA coach.  As for the son, Stephen Silas attended Brown University, there Silas played basketball.  Since the 1999-2000 season he’s served in a variety of roles in the NBA. 

Silas’s been a scout, an assistant coach even once serving on the staff of his father Paul.  His various stops throughout his NBA career offer us proof he’s dealt with varying personalities over that timeframe.  The concern at this point is time, it’s our belief Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta must remain patient.  We have witnessed billionaire owners in the NBA and other professional sports become impatient in their team’s play.  This Rockets team is good but not championship quality, Silas must be given adequate time to mold the team in the image he sees for the future. 

A change---After owning the Jazz for more than 30 years the Miller family placed a FOR-SALE sign outside headquarters.  As per normal there is always an owner willing to step forward to purchase an NBA franchise.  In this instance the pending buyer is Ryan Smith who owns a software company, Smith indicates he grew up a Jazz fan even wanted to play for them at one time.  The reported selling price is $1.66 billion which is pending for now, the NBA’s Board of Governors must meet and approve the sale of the franchise.  Although the Salt Lake City metro is one of the smallest in the NBA fans have continued to support the Jazz over the years. 

I’m easy---If you provide enough convincing information, I can be persuaded to change my mind on a matter.  That’s the case for me on the Lakers acquiring Derrick Rose, you might remember I questioned any effort to acquire the point guard.  This hypothetical move makes sense on several levels, allow me to explain how adding Rose to the roster makes sense.  After a couple of NBA stops Rose proved with the Wolves and this past season with the Pistons he can still play at a high skill pace.   

He just turned 32 so he should have several top years of basketball remaining for his career.  Okay, you cornered me here are the two main reasons the Lakers should make the trade.  1.  The Rose salary is not astronomical like Chris Paul.  2.  LeBron James likes the guy from the brief time they were teammates with the Cavs.  Try as I might I’m not Ron Pelinka however I hope trading Danny Green and Kyle Kuzma makes sense.  One more point, Rose is a point guard he becomes the starter with Rondo relieving him off the bench.  There would be no drop off in production once LeBron takes his rest.

We don’t always receive what we desire---LaVar Ball has made his selection    ahead of the November 18 NBA Draft he WANTS for son LaMelo.  The only glitch we don’t always receive what we desire, teams could trade down to draft lower.  In addition, we never witnessed Scottie Pippen in a Sonics jersey because a draft night trade sent him to the Bulls.  With both   scenarios out of the way consider this fact, six teams would pass Ball before he would be available to the Pistons.  It could occur but the Wolves, Warriors, Hornets, Bulls and Hawks all would pass on Ball before the Piston pick.  In closing I try to never say never however we might believe the Pistons or Knicks just might not have the opportunity to choose Ball unless a deal is worked out.   

Trivia---With the 2020 NBA Championship in the books we have an interesting bit of trivia to share with you.  The NBA first begun play in 1946 is 74 years old, in that time two franchises have dominated the championship series.  The Celtics and Lakers with 17 championships apiece totaling 34, that's nearly half the championships won since the league first began play back in 1946.   

Highly unusual---A bunch of newly hired coaches are busy taking stock and analyzing the needs of their teams, in addition they are active assembling their coaching staffs.  In Brooklyn, the composition of the coaching staff might be a little different from any other staff in the NBA.  Head coach Steve Nash is adding his former coach to his staff.  The Nets are finalizing a deal adding Mike D’Antoni to the staff.

The highly unusual aspect of this paring D’Antoni was most recently the head coach for the Rockets.  As for the past D’Antoni was the head coach for Nash at two NBA stops, the first time with the Suns and the second time when the two were coach and player with the Lakers.  We’ve had father-son coaching combinations in the past, a later account will detail Stephen Silas new Rockets coach and his father connection.  Without an internet search we are unsure if this has ever occurred before, a coach and former player reversing roles.  

Sell yourself---I have believed for several years half of obtaining a job is selling yourself.  That might sound strange however I believe it to be the truth.  I remember once interviewing for a job, I was offered a position in the initial interview, it’s my belief my confident manner provided the provided the interviewer the impression I could perform the job.  I didn’t take the job, who knows I might have been terrible working it but that was not the impression conveyed. 

Where am I going with this you might ask…straight to LaMelo Ball prospective top pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.  This is pure speculation, but the rumor circulating Ball is not interviewing well on his journey among various NBA teams.  There are reports this might cause him to drop further in the order for the 2020 NBA Draft. Anything further stated at this point would be further speculation on my part.      

Okay Gary---Gary Parrish covers NCAA basketball for cbssports.com, generally I’ve found his writing insightful and thought provoking.  I disagree with his latest article written October 29 titled “College basketball coaches on hot seat: Who is lacking job security and might need a good 2020-21.”  Sean Miller coach of the Arizona Wildcats is one of five Parrish identifies on the hot seat, who is missing from his list is Bill Self at Kansas.  Self annually turns out a winner so no complaint by me on that account.  Parrish indicates his belief the administration at Kansas is willing to stand by Self no matter what penalty the NCAA mandates. 

To my knowledge no school has been given the “Death Penalty” since SMU received it for football back in 1987.  I will repeat what I wrote earlier, it is possible Kansas will be acquitted of a reduced number of charges but certainly not escape punishment regarding all.  One additional note, although Self threatened to sue the NCAA back in June there is no indication it ever occurred.  A portion of this can be laid at the feet of the governing body, if you intend to punish you should move forthright and quickly.  The reported improprieties occurred over three years ago if my math is correct.  The NCAA might be just as guilty for dragging this entire process out.

Out of misery (covid) comes possibility ---There is no indication Kansas City will receive an NBA franchise based on the mayor’s recent letter to the NBA commissioner.  In this instance we speak of the invitation for the Raptors to consider the city as a temporary home or in the future another NBA team.  Mayor Lucas pointed out the Kansas City region contains a population base larger than four regions containing NBA teams.  Not in any order they are Salt Lake, OKC, Memphis and New Orleans.  

The last time a similar situation occurred a different city administration in Kansas City failed to act.  In 2005 Hurricane Katrina struck the gulf coast causing catastrophic loss of life and property.  Damage to the arena meant the NBA team was forced to move, the 2005-06 season would witness the Hornets (Pelicans) play in Oklahoma City.  

The effort by civic members in Oklahoma City might have laid the groundwork for the eventual purchase of the Sonics by a local group and the move to Oklahoma City.  Rest assured there is no indication a similar situation would exist should the Raptors play in Kansas City in the upcoming season. In addition to the mayor, 2 U.S. Senators, and 2 U.S. Congressman from both major parties representing Kansas and Missouri is quite interesting.  It is hoped in some circle’s success is achieved with the Raptors or an NBA team belonging to the city with Kansas City on its jersey.      

1988, opps 2020---The confusion is due to the NBA Champion and World Series winner.  In 1988 as 2020 the Lakers won championship number 17; the Dodgers won their 7th championship.  This is an unusual accomplishment in the the same year, outstanding for one city.   

We have new leadership in Houston---The front office changes in Houston are complete, Rafael Stone was hired as general manager replacing Daryl Morey.  Stone reached out to the Mavs and hired assistant Stephen Silas as the new head coach for the Rockets.  What does the future hold for the team with this new front office and coach?  In my view the Rockets are probably in a worst way than numerous NBA teams. 

The statement is made because it is my belief they are in the middle of the pack, they are not a bad team, but they are not good.  Exactly what is the definition, they are decent enough to earn a playoff berth but not effectively compete for an NBA Championship.  We can make this statement about the Rockets, “the sum is greater than the parts” with this team.  How patient will owner Tilman Ferititta be with this new combo gm and head coach?  Hopefully, he gives them time to restructure. 

Speaking of Daryl Morey---I ain’t mad a Daryl Morey but, it seems just as soon as he resigns as GM of the Rockets, he manages to secure another job.  Morey’s been hired as president of the Sixers which certainly was a smooth move.   Did he feel as though time ran out on the “small ball” experiment with the Rockets?  Rest assured there are probably areas Morey excels, we are not exactly sure if this extends into the realm of player development.  I know the idea to go small wasn't his alone Mike D'Antoni's fingerprints are on the move too.

I’m unsure if we can refer to Pat Riley as a hater but he certainly threw shade in the direction of the Lakers regarding their championship.  There have been others former players, members of the media even a few with NBA connections.  Is there a need on my part to defend the Lakers, probably not?  I must state my chief concern is the failure by these critics to realize what it takes to win a championship.
