Family Feud
Anybody remember the television quiz show Family Feud? We have a real life family feud in North Carolina on the campus of Duke University. A woman filed a lawsuit against her sister, her sister's husband and Duke University regarding season basketball tickets. As a life-time contributor and fund raiser for the university their Dad was given two season tickets, when he died earlier this year the tickets were transferred to the sister and her husband by the university. The athletic department awarded the tickets without any forethought according to the legal brief. The Duke graduate wants to continue support of the basketball program. If you thought this was just an argument over tickets it's about money too. According to news reports there are financial obligations required for the owner of the tickets. The holder of the tickets must pay a $50,000 transfer fee and be willing to contribute $6,000 annually to the Duke athletic program. Surely there must be more to the story than basketball tickets?

The Wide World of Basketball
Basketball is a world wide game, of course soccer (or football) remains the world's number one sport. I would wager a youngster in Germany or France could name far more NBA players than NFL! Basketball was probably first exported in 1936 when it was added to the Olympic venue. Much later beginning in the mid to late '70's American college coaches began tutoring the game in workshops around the world. The game today, Mavs forward Dirk Nowitzki and German native was MVP of the recently concluded championship series. Last year many thought the series MVP should have been Spain's Pau Gasol rather than Kobe Bryant. Steve Nash born in South Africa raised in Canada won back to back regular season MVP awards in 2005 and 2006. Manu Ginobili of Argentina and Tony Parker of France have been key in securing championships for the Spurs.

He's smooth and I think he's NBA ready!
Sometimes with 200+ channels you miss a broadcast you intend to view. While channel surfing I accidently tuned into the Adidas 64 championship game from Las Vegas. I had checked the ESPN schedule earlier, I figured if anybody would telecast the game it would be ESPNU, this time it was the CBS Sports Network. A Texas team (Texas Assault) and a team comprised of California and Nevada kids (Dream Vision) faced off in the 17-age bracket. Dream Vision was favored by the crowd due to it's many Las Vegas players. Dream Vision's roster also included the number one player in the nation Shabazz Muhammad.

Muhammad did not disappoint although he played the game on a gimpy ankle the kid can play. This 6-6 small forward is a smooth operator and he makes free throws too. Unfortunately his teammates failed to play at the same level of Muhammad, Texas Assault won the 17-age bracket championship 93-78. Marcus Smart a 6-4 shooting guard from Flower Mound (TX) was selected the games MVP, Smart is being recruited by Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and North Carolina. Just in case you are wondering where the town of Flower Mound in located it's one the numerous suburbs surrounding the Dallas-Forth Worth metro. The 16-age bracket champion was Kansas City Pump N Run with 6-0 point guard Conner Frankamp selected as MVP. Frankamp is from Wichita North High School and recently committed to Kansas University.

TMZ??
Did ESPN pick up this TMZ story because LeBron James was involved? Sometimes legitimate news, sports and celebrity merge into one story at times but TMZ! In any event I'm reporting this because it was picked up by ESPN.com. LeBron James walking to his automobile was asked about Shaq's comment on Chris Bosh. "Shaq had an unbelievable career and I'm happy for him" was the response. How should TMZ or any other news organization expect James to respond? Bosh is a teammate, if James has issues with Bosh he goes to management not TMZ. Did you know Celtic players Kevin McHale and Larry Bird had issues, reports indicate they didn't actually like each other. Despite these differences they managed successful play as teammates for years and contributed to several Celtic championships.

It's the only job left but do you really want it?
Although not official it appears the Pistons have hired former Nets coach Lawrence Frank. That leaves only one head coaching position open, the Minnesota T-Wolves. Veteran coaches Bernie Bickerstaff and Rick Adelman will have been interviewed by the time you read this. You might ask the question why would anyone want this job other than financial? How you are treated as an employee might be a key question here. Ask former coach Kurt Rambis the question, I would agree with anyone who might say Rambis might not be a good coach. I could also agree if you said he was not a good fit and needed to be replaced, the question becomes how he was replaced. No employee of any corporation should be strung out like he was. I challenge you to point out an HR Department in any major corporation operating in this manner. I'm sure deep down Rambis probably knew he was going to be fired but there is a right way and wrong to handle a firing. The Wolves chose the wrong way!

Viva Las Vegas
Another AAU tournament of note is the Adidas Super 64 held in Las Vegas July 22-26. This tournament is a boys and girls tournament and appears to be one of the largest in the nation. How well attended is this tourney, the Lawrence Journal World claims there are over 200 college coaches present. The number one player in the nation (Rivals, Scout.com) was on hand to display his basketball skill. Shabazz Muhammad a 6-6 215 pound shooting guard from Bishop Gorman High School Las Vegas dazzled the scouts and fans. Sixteen major schools have made offers to Muhammad among them Duke, UCLA, Kansas, Texas and North Carolina.

Dickey V
Dick Vitale is a love-hate guy, I've discovered most folks either really like him or totally detest him. I'm in neither camp, Dickey V bothers me at times when he tends to go overboard heaping praise on Coach K, the Dukees and Carolina Tarheels. Other than his Carolina affinity Vitale is basically okay with me. Recently he presented his list of top 40 pre-season teams and surprise, surprise he had Mizzou on his list. He has the Tigers as the number 19 team in the nation which certainly is a good sign. New coach, new system and even a couple of new players bodes well for Mizzou. If an casual observer such a Vitale can see the potential why can't a few fans of the program?

What if
I gave up "what if's" a long time ago, I sometimes wonder why fans continue to dwell on them. The what if's go something like this, "what if the Heat had not played so bad against the Mavs in the last two games?" As human beings we seem to find ourselves caught up in this type of thinking. I put to bed this thought process ages ago, doesn't matter if we are discussing basketball or life. An old television beer commercial used the slogan "you only go around once" and it's true. I remember a game ages ago, the Abdul Jabbar Bucks were in a critical championship match against the Celtics. In one particular game the lead was back and forth between the teams. After a score or timeout I don't remember which the Celtics inbounded the ball and began dribbling up court, Bucks guard Oscar Robertson swiped at the Celtic guard knocking it across the floor. Both players raced for the ball with Robertson in front however he was unable to reach the ball before it hit a referees leg and bounced out of bounds. The referee is part of the "floor" so technically Robertson had knocked the ball out of bounds and it belonged to the Celtics. The Celtics inbound the ball went on to win the game and in time the series, I thought what if the referee had not gotten in the way Robertson surely would have recovered the ball? But the game and series could have ended with another outcome too. After that game I said to myself no more what if's, on those occasions when my favorite team loses I don't always understand why but when questioned I will offer no what if's.

Crime doesn't pay... does that mean my job is a crime?

On second thought
At the time word begin to circulate Yao Ming was to retire many begin to speculate whether he was Hall of Fame. I wrote his career was too short, 9 years wasn't enough time to justify inclusion. I've since changed my mind, what Yao accomplished extended far beyond the basketball court. Yao certainly opened the NBA game to the masses in China. Healthy he was a very skilled and talented player. Recently retired Shaquille O'Neal was asked about Yao, "the first time I faced him I tried to finger roll, he blocked my first three shots. I had to change my game against him. He was a great player." There will be future players from China but probably few with this gentle giant's skill and demeanor. So long Yao, the NBA will miss you. How about the fact the last two true back to the basket centers (Shaq & Yao) retire in the same year.

What!
After numerous law suits and delays construction of the Nets new home in Brooklyn is right on schedule. The Barclays Center is scheduled to open in September 2012 and the Nets will not play the first basketball game in the arena! Maybe I should have typed it in bold so it would standout more. In any event several publications are citing the same story one written by Matthew Flamm. According to Flamm a Maryland-Kentucky match will be the first game played in the new arena. Flamm provides no proof he says "according to sources." (Matthew Flamm, Crain's New York Business July 17, 2011) The latest dollar figures indicate construction cost of Barclays Center are in the neighborhood of $800 million dollars. Sprint Center opened in 2007 was built for $276 million dollars. 2011 dollars Sprint would cost $292 million.

A new "player" in the game
At this point it appears Under Armour intends to compete with Nike, Reebok, Adidas and others. Prior to the 2011 draft the company had only signed two NBA players. Under Armour announced signing of the second player selected in the draft former Arizona Wildcat Derrick Williams. Earlier in the summer they inked the number nine pick Kemba Walker of UConn. Nike and others should be on guard, many of us remember back to a time when Converse was the number one shoe. Dr. J., Magic Johnson and Larry Bird wore Cons. Nike (and Michael Jordan) came on the scene eventually eclipsed Converse and the balance of the story is history as they say.

Did you see that pitch?
The Wizards John Wall is an up and coming point guard, his star is rising in the NBA. Baseball that's a different matter, invited to throw out the ceremonial pitch at a Nationals game Wall's throw was classic. Do you remember the scene in the movie Major League, Rick "Wild Thing" Vaughn's first pitch was thrown wildly? Indians play by play announcer Harry Doyle "justttttt a bit outside, he tried the corner and missed." Use your memory of the game, that's the type of throw John Wall made only quite a bit slower.

The 2011-13 NBA schedule
Tuesday the NBA released it's schedule as if basketball will be played! At this point most of us are unsure of the date the owners and players union will come to an agreement. Unfortunately I'm not as optimistic as I was when this thing first began. Eventually an agreement will be signed it might be December it could be January or maybe July.

What's up with this?
I didn't take time to check the entire NBA schedule, Yahoo's NBA page caught me off guard. The headline story pointed out the Knicks will be on national television more than the Heat and Lakers this upcoming season. What's up with that has the programming process of TNT, ESPN and ABC changed? Yes, Carmelo Anthony will be on the scene for a full season but will this team really compete in the east? "The Knicks are going to be on TV a whopping 29 times next year, which ties them for second with Chicago, behind Boston and Dallas (who are on national TV 30 times) overall." (Kelly Dwyer Ball Don't Lie July 19, 2011) The Knicks made the playoffs last year but finished the regular season a remarkable one game above .500. Until this Mike D'Antoni team begins to play a semblance of defense they will have a short run should they make the playoffs again.

The old rivals are at it again
This time off the court not on it, following the same scenario as the Lakers the Celtics are about to sign a long term television deal. Remember back in February Time Warner Cable signed the Lakers to a reported 20-year $3 billion dollar television deal. The Celtics are close to signing a similar deal with Comcast SportsNet New England. No dollars are mentioned in the press release however the Celtics deal is reported to be the same length of time 20-years.

His nickname
I realize when I wrote of Shaquille O'Neal last week I titled the story the Big Shaqtus. I was in error, Shaqtus was the moniker he used for an ESPN promo when playing in the desert for the Phoenix Suns. To my knowledge the only cactus in Atlanta (TNT & NBA TV studios) are probably house plants. I'm really unsure what name to use, in any event in his first NBA TV interview as a new hire Shaq launched a cruise missile and it exploded on Chris Bosh. All last season the media had various nicknames for the Heat trio, the name used most was the Big 3. Shaq says that's incorrect it's actually the Big 2, he appears to be unimpressed with Bosh and his game. Shaq played with Wade in Miami and James in Cleveland could that have anything to do with his statement? Chris Bosh is a very good player but is his game on the same level of James and Wade?

Another verbal commitment
I said it recently but I will repeat it again, I am still unsure if Mizzou's Frank Haith can coach. Despite my concerns about the coaching part the recruiting appears to be solid, he and his coaching staff continue to beat the bushes and it pays off. The Texas pipeline remains open, 6'7" 290 pound Simon Goines from Keller (Dallas) Texas gave a verbal commitment for 2012. Goines was an offensive tackle while in high school, Gary Pinkel might want to "borrow him" should the football team experience injuries with the offensive line. Does it matter where Haith and staff recruit? Does it matter the only Missouri player recruited to date is Raytown South's Ishmael Wainwright. Due to the states population recruiting is somewhat limited in Kansas yet KU is always competitive, why? They compete because they recruit from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from the Gulf of Mexico to Minnesota and all points in between.

Is football the real winner here?
We have roughly 6-8 weeks before school officially begins. We discussed Colorado and Nebraska leaving the Big 12 Conference but you might ask which sport benefits the most from this move? In both instances it would appear the move is far better for football. Colorado and Nebraska have only been average basketball programs over the last several years, no criticism of the coaching staffs just the facts. It might be pointed out with Cory Higgins and Alec Burks the Buffs have been a little better than the Huskers. For the immediate time being Colorado might be in better shape than Nebraska, the Pac 10 is not as competitive in basketball. Traditional powers UCLA and USC have declined over the last several years. As for the Big 10 a much different story exists, Ohio State, Michigan and Wisconsin and even Penn State have played competitive basketball. There might be several sleepless nights in Lincoln Nebraska this upcoming basketball season.

The great Carnac
For those too young to remember Johnny Carson had a comedy routine he performed regularly on The Tonight Show. Carson would come out with a cape and a turban on his head. He would begin his skit by providing Ed McMahon the answer to a question contained in the envelopes McMahon held. The great Carnac used mental telepathy to see into the envelope. I'm going to do my best Carnac so here goes, the answer is Darius Morris. We open the sealed envelope (use your imagination please) the card inside reads starting Laker point guard. This 6'4" 190 pound point guard played collegiality at the University of Michigan although he's a Los Angeles native. We should assume the Lakers had plenty of opportunities to scout him during summers. For the Carnac part of the story, if there is an NBA season he will be starting in place of Derek Fisher. Okay you say big deal anybody can start over the 37-year old Fisher, the difference Morris has true point guard skills something the triangle offense didn't really require of Fisher.

Diamonds in the rough
Next week I will journey to Okum Gym in Shawnee to see my fourth AAU tournament this year. You might ask why my increased interest in AAU ball, several weeks back I mentioned the road trip to Hutchinson Kansas to see our grandson's team from Dallas play. I was excited by the brand of basketball I saw, several weeks later in Dallas we had an opportunity to see more AAU ball. Once we returned to Kansas City I begin checking the sports calendar and discovered Metro Sports was a sponsor for two area tournaments. Last week I had an opportunity to see Kansas City's Pump n Run's 15 year old team and two additional teams from Oklahoma play. The tournament involved 50 teams from 11 different states around the nation. Next weeks tournament is The 9th Annual KC Prep Invitational/Metro Sports, July 28-31. The information from the website indicate this tournament is probably going to be larger than last weeks. If you are reading this locally check for game times, Mid America Sports Complex West Okum Gym, 20200 Johnson Dr, Shawnee Kansas.

What should the city do?
This could be considered part II of Monday's blog, it was prompted by another Kansas City Star article. What do we do with Kemper Arena? The American Royal announced their annual rodeo would be moved to Sprint Center this year. On the surface this certainly is not a big story but it is a story. After driving past American Airlines Center in Dallas I was curious what happened to Reunion Arena the former home of the Mavs. Although we have no NBA or NHL team Dallas faced many of the same issues facing Kansas City today. The Mavs and several other events moved to the new American Airlines Center in 2001 while Reunion remained open for arena football, concerts and other events. Back to Kansas City, AEG petitioned the city council to take over operations of Kemper but that would appear to be an issue in itself, managing both AEG would appear to be competing with itself. Location, location, location the rodeo was moved to Sprint because of ticket sales. According the to the Kansas City Star "the Royal sold 3,000-4,000 tickets last season but anticipates sales of 12,000 in Sprint." (Aleese Kopf, Kansas City Star July 18, 2011) Folks are still unwilling en masse to venture to the West Bottoms and Kemper, traffic is much easier at the downtown Sprint Center. How did Dallas resolve the dilemma of two arenas, in July 2008 the Dallas City Council voted to close Reunion and demolition was completed in November 2009.

I keep my ideals, because in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.

It just might work
The Star's Pete Grathoff recently wrote a story "Sprint Center doing fine without NHL or NBA franchise." He pointed out the arena has been profitable to the city and AEG thanks to AEG's concert connections. Okay the finances have been good but why not look at increasing the revenue stream with an NBA team? You say there is no owner, true but study this proposal. An email respondent suggested a shared NBA franchise, St. Louis and Kansas City. At first thought that might seem strange and perhaps unworkable but let's take a look at the advantage. Kansas City has a metro population of 2.2 million, St. Louis 2.7 so the populace is there. Each city would only need to black out 21 dates for Sprint and Savvis Center thus lucrative concert dates would remain available. The cities would share ownership responsibility, one group in Kansas City the other in St. Louis. I know this still might sound strange but I can remember back to the days of the Kansas City-Omaha Kings, we knew the Kings were only in Kansas City for X number of games, there might have been fan complaints regarding the arrangement I don't remember. Understand me there are unexplored kinks in this proposal, an undertaking of this sort just might work.

Is contraction the answer?
This might be considered a cousin to the above. The American way is to never go backwards, we never retreat in war or the boardroom. On second thought perhaps the NBA should consider retreat if the financials are as bad as the commish claims. NBA owners have been crying the blues and it would appear a smaller NBA might aid the solution. Are there teams that could be contracted without causing a ripple in the fabric of the NBA? The NBA could be reduced from 30 to 25 teams and remain successful. Who are the five teams, the Hornets of New Orleans would be at the top of the list because they have no owner. The NBA has run the Hornets franchise since December 2010. Next the Kings, yes the team Sacramento fans seemed to be determined to keep although finances appear to be a problem there too. As for the others, the Milwaukee Bucks, Memphis Grizzlies and perhaps the Pacers of Indiana would be included in a smaller version of the NBA. Should contraction occur the only real losers will be the fans plus arena employees who would lose their jobs. As for the players there would be a dispersal draft and they would simply be absorbed into the remaining teams in a manner similar to the ABA-NBA merger.

It all depends on your perspective
The world knows the true story, Larry Brown was an excellent coach at both UCLA and Kansas. Brown's desire to teach the game possibly aided in his teams winning, this culminated with an NCAA championship. The downside to Brown's coaching was the fact he was a terrible recruiter, he hated to scout and hustle kids. This might be untrue of Mizzou's Frank Haith, referees are yet to toss up the first ball so we still don't know if he can coach. To date we know he and his coaching staff certainly can recruit, a couple of weeks back there were howls by some of the faithful because there were no incoming freshman to the program. The worry in my view was unfounded, the cupboard is not exactly bare. They lose Justin Safford to graduation and Ricky Kreklow has transferred, the balance of players are returning to this 23-11 team. Not signed but committed are several prospects for the 2012-13 season and Mizzou added another on Saturday. Aaron Scales, a 6'9" 265 center from North Carolina announced he was headed to Columbia.

Baseball or basketball, which way do I go?
How would you like to be rated by Rivals as a 4-star basketball player and have a 96-mph fastball? That's the story on prep star Amir Garrett who plays for Findlay Prep in Henderson Nevada, Henderson is located 16 miles from downtown Las Vegas. When is a high school really not a school, when it's similar to Findlay. The following is from an article I read. "The basketball players are the school's only students, they take classes at Henderson International School a pre-school through grade 12. The school's founder Cliff Findlay established a foundation that pays for each player's $17,000 tuition at Henderson." (Tom King, UMass.com January 18, 2011) Garrett recently signed a letter of intent with the Red Storm of St. John's and might be headed to NYC. There is a question, he might be headed to a minor league baseball team. This past May there were 37 major league scouts in attendance to watch this 6'5" lefty with the 90+ fastball pitch for Findlay.

It's easy to see why the Wolves have been so bad for so long
Wolves GM David Kahn finally fired his head coach Kurt Rambis. There are several issues far beyond simply firing the coach, chief among them is Kahn himself. I will not defend the coaching ability or style of Rambis. I don't think in the history of sport I can ever remember a coach/manager allowed to twist in the wind like this for more than two months. The entire basketball world knew Rambis was history and maybe the pending lockout delayed his firing. Kahn was probably in no rush to replace a coach who had a contract paying him for two additional years. The firing was Kahn's call, it was handled poorly just like the Wolves franchise has been run over the last decade.

Where in the wide world of sports is Spearville Kansas?
You probably never heard of Spearville Kansas, neither had I. This tiny town of 900+ souls is some 17 miles northeast of Dodge City. Spearville has provided Olathe Northwest with a very talented 6'10" 220 pound center. Last summer Cauley played for the Mo-Kan AAU team, he stated basketball competition was severely limited in and around his home town. One of Cauley's teammates on the Mo-Kan team was Shavon Shields son of former Chiefs great Will Shields. Cauley and Shields formed a friendship during the summer as teammates, last August Cauley moved in with the Shields family. Cauley has furthered developed his game as a member of the Olathe Northwest Ravens. Both ESPN and Rivals list Cauley as a four star prospect.

Basketball 101
I admit I don't shot the rock as regularly or as good as I once did, my life these days contain few visits to any basketball courts. I was never a great shooter only average but I had to prove I had a little game left. My six year old grandson has a basketball goal in his parents driveway, the goal is at regulation height and he can really shot. First of all I don't recommend shooting baskets in 100+ temperatures very long but I was forced to continue by the six year old. After shooting several air balls and short shots he was giving me the blues, can you imagine a six year old talking trash about your game? Eventually I warmed up and shot 5 or 6 shots in a row from distance, I had to show him his grandpa had played a little basketball back in the day.

The Big Shaqtus
It's now been confirmed Shaquille O'Neal will join Kenny, Barkley and Ernie in studio. The SI.com article points out several vital facts which will benefit Shaq. A TNT job is a better fit than ESPN, ESPN studios are located in Bristol Connecticut TNT's in Atlanta. Atlanta is much closer to Orlando (Shaq's home) than Bristol. It was also reported this will allow Shaq occasional appearances on NBA TV which is also broadcast from the Turner studios. Despite what might appear at times I think Charles Barkley does work at his craft probably not as much as Kenny Smith but he does more than just show up. Shaq must be willing to put in the time if he is to be successful in this new direction in his career.

Mark your calendar
Often basketball fans must wait for the NCAA tournament to view a match this significant. Saturday December 3 potential number 1 North Carolina will face potential number 2 Kentucky. Not sure if this is the beginning of a recurring home and home series, the game will be played at Rupp Arena in Lexington. Hey Skip I'm open to a road trip.

Do you want to own a pro basketball team?
I was checking the ABA website for an update on the league's status. The reformed ABA was never intended to compete with the NBA but provide areas of the country an opportunity to view pro basketball. I'm unsure about other areas of the country but it was clear the Kansas City Knights were under financed even for the ABA. After sparkling play their first few years (including an ABA Championship) the team ceased operations in 2006. By 2008 Kansas City once again became home to the ABA, this new team the Kansas City Spartans would began play in late fall. After much styling-n-profiling during the summer and early fall the team ceased operations after a handful of early season games. The Kansas City Star later reported the team was arrears in it's lease of Municipal Auditorium. In any event the ABA website is still seeking new owners, wonder what the start up cost is? Oh well, another dream for another time.

Shaq and TNT
CNBC is reporting the recently retired Shaquille O'Neal will surface at TNT, the network is yet to confirm the story. Once again proof positive the American public will continue it's love affair with Shaq. He is one player who could never do wrong, when Shaq left for Miami in the publics mind Kobe was the villain. Shaq was always forgiven no matter the circumstances. Many fans quickly forget how often Shaq would enter training camp out of shape from his second career as an entertainer. Unless we are informed differently we must assume Shaq will be an in-studio host rather than an in game commentator. Can you imagine the exchanges between The Big Aristotle and Sir Charles?

What should I do?
The other day my wife invited her cousin to view "my man cave" for the very first time. After checking it out and complementing me she said, "well your team (the Lakers) didn't win." I offered no response but thought how should I respond or what does she expect me to say? Should I remove the jerseys from the wall, do I take down the championship banners and plaques? Do I strip the room because the team failed to win the NBA Championship? Are the 16 NBA Championships suddenly negated because the Mavs won the championship? It makes me wonder if Saints fans trashed their fan gear because the team failed to defend it's Super Bowl Championship? It might be noted the Yankees failed to defend their World Series win too. At this point I'm more concerned about the lockout than the Lakers competing next season whenever that might occur. Stay tuned there will be more to this story.

Food for thought
KU's Bill Self recently chimed in on the one n done rule. The NBA rule that states a high school player must attend college one year before submitting his name for the NBA draft. This is just one of the many issues to be resolved in the latest talks between owners and players and Self thought it was worth revisiting. Self says, "a high school player should be eligible for the draft however if a player attends college he must remain in college three years." The view expressed by Self is not new he's just the latest to state his opposition to the current NBA rules. I have gone back and forth on this rule for several years but for a variety of reasons have come to one conclusion, allow high school players in the draft. Make up your own mind but if you can provide me a valid reason for maintaining the current body of rules please contact me.

Playing cornerback for the _______________
Nate Robinson has a different NBA lockout story. Robinson now playing for Oklahoma City says he is considering an NFL tryout if the lockout persists. Robinson at 5'9" certainly has leaping skills, few players can match his 43" vertical. The proof of his leaping ability is winning the 2010 Slam Dunk Championship. Football as a high skill level is not the stretch one might imagine for him. Robinson was actually recruited as a cornerback for the Washington Huskies and later moved to the basketball team.

Is it September already?
A funny thing happened on the way to September. Last week I wrote my intentions were to begin renewal of Words in September. I chose September for several reasons, chief among them my hope the NBA lockout would be concluded. Why the change, the board of directors (I don't really have a board) several readers requested I continue to provide my spin on relevant basketball news. Thanks for the encouragement in this effort.

It's official now
Yao Ming is retiring after nine years in the NBA. He endured a series of injuries over the course of his career which has curtailed his career. Season when healthy he was a mighty force in the paint. I remember him blocking the first two shots of Shaquille O'Neal the first time they faced off. Time certainly has passed quickly, it seems but a short time ago I first begin reading about this 7'6" giant from China. Yao Ming was not the first Chinese player in the NBA but he certainly has been the most successful to date. Traditionally big men do not shoot free throws well, Yao is one of the exceptions. Former Piston Bill Laimbeer is the only full-time center to have a higher percentage than Yao Ming, Laimbeer was .837 to Ming's .833.

It's possible another father/son in the NBA
Remember former NBA player Shawn Kemp? Kemp was a 6'9" power forward who spent most of his NBA career playing for the Sonics. He was dubbed the Reign Man by the media, one of the definitions of reign is dominating power or influence. Sean Kemp certainly did dominate during the early years of his NBA career, his effort and the Sonics was curtailed by the Jordan Bulls. For several years this was true of Sean Kemp but wait there's more. His son Sean Kemp Jr. recently signed with the Washington Huskies. The son is a 6'10" 265 pound power forward who is considered an outstanding prospect, Husky coach Lorenzo Romar is excited to have the second coming of the Reign Man???

Will he be treated as just another basketball player?
Prior to the draft and eventual lockout many collegiate were making the rounds of NBA cities in hopes of being drafted. Undrafted players are currently in limbo unable to sign with any NBA team. One of the players on the circuit was Mustapha Farrakhan Jr., you might not be familiar with this former University of Virginia baller but you certainly are familiar with his grandfather. His grandfather is Minister Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam. Young Farrakhan is a 6-4 shooting guard who averaged 13.5 points per game at the University of Virginia and is no dumb jock, he graduated with a sociology degree. On his NBA aspirations his only comment has been "he's trying to fit in." He appears to be searching for his own identity but there is a bigger question. How will his grandfathers reputation impact his possible future in the NBA or other endeavors of life?

From Russia with Love
I don't know about you but I don't believe it. I don't believe the claims made by several media sources that NBA players are headed to Europe in case the lockout persist. Yes, I think players at the end of several NBA benches might be headed for Europe should the lockout extend into the regular season. There are numerous reasons why a mass exodus of star players will not occur, if an injury should occur a players contract could be voided. Don't think so, remember former Bulls guard Jay Williams? Williams had an off-season motorcycle accident which forced his early retirement. The word on the street indicated the Bulls were not going to pay Williams because his contract among other issues excluded riding a motorcycle. The Bulls eventually relented and paid him, you think Deron Williams or Kobe Bryant would be willing to risk injury playing in Europe?

The end?
Happy 4th of July to each of you, this is the last edition of Words for the duration of the summer. I hope it's been informative and maybe sometimes funny. My plan was to provide you with a few thoughts, this was never an attempt by me to become the next great writer of our time. The game I loved as a youth has continued throughout my adult life. I hope I was able to share a portion of my passion for the game, thanks to you for becoming faithful readers.

Jerry Jones
All of us realize the billions of dollars expended in building Cowboys stadium. The largest event held to date has been the NBA All-Star game, the smallest probably the WBC (Woman's Bowling Conference) recently held inside Cowboys stadium. Bowling in a football stadium is quite a reach to gain revenue. Boxing fans contacted me pointing out the stadium has hosted boxing matches but that doesn't match the revenue soccer would bring in. If Jones needs to pay off the debt on the building why not consider soccer? In a metro area with the population of Dallas it would appear soccer games could rival the 100,000 plus the NBA All-Star game drew. On the other hand shouldn't Jones be smart enough to figure this out himself?

Billionaires versus Millionaires
I held out hope players and owners would come to an agreement. I hoped there would be no lockout but here were are in the middle of it. Speculation on a settlement date has varied, some scribes claim the season will be wiped out others say a few games. Stephen A. Smith claims no regular season games will be lost, I like Smith's view much better. In any event two facts. 1. The owners are not losing nearly as much money as they claim. 2. The players will eventually settle but will lose, they will lose salaries and benefits. Why must we always choose sides in this rich versus the richer disagreement?

The end of the world might be sooner than we think.
The Knicks are reported to be signing Kwame Brown as soon at the lockout is over. The same Kwame Brown that's failed to live up to the promise as the number one draft pick in the 2001 draft. Brown is now with team five and the Knicks would be number six clearly he has issues far beyond the space alloted this blog. I guess he might be superior to the Eddy Curry story, you remember Curry the player Isiah Thomas traded for and signed to a huge contract. The Knicks future while some what brighter might regress if the Brown signing becomes official. The Knicks might be in danger of losing their number one celebrity fan Spike Lee. Did you see the look on Spike's face when the Knicks draft pick was announced? It seemed to read who is this guy (Iman Shumpert) and why did we draft him? The Knicks chose Georgia Tech's Shumpert with the 17th pick in the first round. Are Chauney Billups days at the point numbered?

Bye-Bye
Finally the dust has settled and the Big 12 is now a 10 team conference. Nebraska and Colorado officially left the fold last week and I say good riddance to both. The conference should now remain at 10, stories have circulated about replacement schools for Nebraska and Colorado. Now if we can only do something about the gigantic hand print of the Texas schools. I'm really looking forward to the Longhorn Network, not!

NBA Owners
Two interesting stories regarding NBA ownership. Several years ago we were bombarded with critical statements regarding hip hop music and it's connection to the NBA. Several media types led us to believe that only NBA players were listening to rap music. For some reason they wanted us to believe only NBA players and not football or baseball players were listening to rap (you think so?)

My friend JW was the leader and chief critic of rap music and it's association with the NBA. Why do you suppose he's attached at the hip to a Kansas City rap artist, oh well that's another story for another time. JW hinted rap artists would one day lead to the destruction of the NBA. The leagues economic issues might be closer to the truth rather than rap music.

Several of these "bad boys" have taken on the role of NBA owner. To refresh your memory Shawn Carter (AKA Jay-Z) has owned a minority share in the Brooklyn Nets for several years. Nelly too has joined the ranks as an NBA owner, he purchased a share in the Bobcats at the time Bob Johnson was owner. He's remained in place under majority owner Michael Jordan. It might be a reach to include Usher as part of the hip hop group however he is an entertainer. Usher owns a piece of the Cavs franchise, of course Dan Gilbert is the majority shareholder.

How young is too young?
For years I've read of talent being discovered at an early age. Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul Jabbar) is the first name that comes to mind, I remember reading an article on him when he was an 8th grader. A similar story exists for the Lakers Lamar Odom, it was his sophomore year of high school the first time I read an article on him. Colleges no longer wait for prospects junior or senior year to begin the recruiting process. Early recruiting can be an issue as well.

Sophomore Ishmael Wainwright from Raytown South has now de-committed from Mizzou. To clarify for some of you a player is not bound to the school until he signs paperwork. At the same time an athlete can void the committment at a later date. Wainwright says Mizzou is still at the top of his list but he wants toexplore other opportunities. I have no problem with his statement, maybe Heath and other coaches should cease recruiting younger players. On the other hand if you don't recruit early on you might miss an Alec Burks?

Hall of Fame, maybe?
Recently I read an article regarding Allen Iverson and the possibility of him landing in Springfield. I thought for a minute, despite his "baggage" the guy had an outstanding career especially in his early years. Then my mind drifted to one Dennis Rodman and I'm sharing this story. I have a friend who was a big Bulls fan back in the Michael Jordan days. After Rodman retired he asked me if I thought he might be elected to the hall of fame, I told him I wasn't sure but I thought his off the court antics might cast him in a negative light with voters.

Rodman in drag (the wedding dress) and his association with Madonna were among his non-basketball antics. I looked up Rodman's numbers and then refreshed my memory he had led the NBA in rebounding for seven years and was also 1st team defense for seven years. Rodman will be inducted in the Hall of Fame later this year. I informed my friend remember our conversation regarding Rodman? With Iverson never say never, we don't know what might be the deciding factor for entry into the hall.

To be or not to be!
Laker guard Shannon Brown opted out of his contract and will become a free agent. I feel differently this year versus the prior year. Brown's leaping ability provided a spark off the bench for the 2010 championship run. His dunks caused many Laker fans to borrow the UPS slogan "what can brown do for you." Over the course of this recently concluded season I saw none of the flash or athleticism of the prior season, at the same time his defensive effort seemed to be lacking focus at times. In conclusion he is not a bad player, certainly not in my view. However his leaving will not cause any Laker fans to miss him.

On the road again
The family is traveling this 4th of July weekend. I thought at first I would wait for my return to begin writing. While checking a couple of websites I was prompted to write the above. Enjoy!
