Will he return?
I casually followed Phil Jackson’s career at the time he managed the Chicago Bulls. Later when he became coach of my team (Lakers) I became a PJ disciple. I deviled into the philosophy and personality of the man, I was able to gain insight into the man. Over that timefram I read and heard the complements and complaints from fans and the media to regarding PJ. In all the years I don’t ever remember reading or hearing a complaint from any of his former players. Every Bulls and Laker couldn’t have loved the man, strange I’m still waiting. The media is ripe with stories PJ might be on the way to Brooklyn to replace Avery Johnson. A fan wrote; “every time a job opens Phil Jackson is the first name mentioned.” There is a reason, PJ wins and he turns contending teams into championship teams. I’ve been wrong in the past but I seriously doubt if he wants to leave Los Angeles and Jeannie Buss to coach the second best team in New York City. On the other hand owner Mikhail Prokhorov has deep pockets and could afford to pay PJ whatever he desires.

Money aside maybe the most significant issue Prokhorov owns the Nets not the Knicks. I believe PJ has always had a secret desire to coach the team he once played for and tutored under Coach Red Holztman. PJ was injured one year unable to play, forced to “carry” the clipboard he picked Holtzman’s brain for tidbits on how to coach. The only problem the opportunity to coach the Knicks is not available at this stage; Mike Woodson is solidly in place and is going nowhere. As for a replacement coach the list is extensive, ESPN’s Mike Mazzeo provided us a list of 10 candidates. The choice of a coach lies with the recommendation of GM Billy King and owner Prokhorov’s approval. If I had the opportunity to confer with one or both I would exclude two names from Mazzeo’s list. Mike Brown late of the Lakers, from all indications a good guy but not a very good head coach. I would also pass on Quin Snyder for almost the same reason. Snyder, Duke graduate plus a law degree, the guy is highly intelligent that’s the positive. The negative, he “walked” out on his Mizzou team in February because he thought he‘d be fired at the end of the season. Snyder left the basketball program in shambles in my view.

It’s not going to be played
It was announced last month an “AAU” style college game would be played in Cowboys Stadium. The game was to be held November 11, 2014 Veterans Day, its now been cancelled. I originally thought the four games would be played one after the other which was not the case. It would have been AAU style with all four games played at nearly the same time. It was reported the television networks were reluctant to tie up their schedule with this type of format. My only comment please no more aircraft carrier games.

Bits n Pieces
A number of fans and media love to criticize Kobe. The criticism always occurs when the Lakers experience a “bump” in the road. The critical remarks are almost never heard when the Lakers win. What about Deron Williams, he‘s going to acquire a reputation as a coach killer. Jerry Sloan at Utah and now Avery Johnson in Brooklyn. He pleads innocent in both instances. He claims “he didn’t go to Billy King (Nets GM) regarding Johnson.”

I once said “maybe Mizzou won’t miss Michael Dixon with Jabari Brown eligible.” I am now retracting my earlier statement. The offense of Brown so far has been a plus but the team misses Dixon in an area I failed to consider, relief for point guard Pressey. Back to back 40 plus minute games are too much for anyone. Point guard/shooting guard Dixon could have provided relief, the coach must locate a way to relieve Pressey.

I once thought it was only me that had Jeff Van Gundy issues, not so. Reports circulated ESPN analyst Van Gundy was under consideration as head coach of the Nets. Two websites (including ESPN) the emails came flying in, from the comments there are others with JVG difficulties too.

I don’t own a Kia automobile but I love the Blake Griffin commercials. A new one premiered Christmas day. The spots are well written and Griffin has the ability to poke fun at him---classic.

A familiar name
Devin Booker might follow in the footsteps of dad Melvin, Devin is a 6-3 180 pound combo guard and the number 27 prospect in the the Class of 2014.  Devin attended Midnight Madness at Mizzou in October.  The question remains open if he will attend his dad's school.  Some might remember dad Melvin; he played guard (and very well) at Mizzou from 1991-1994.  His senior year numbers, 18.1 ppg and 4.5 assist per game average while shooting .504 from the field and .405 from the 3-point line.  "Booker was the the 1994 Big Eight Player of the Year when he led Missouri to an undefead conference record of 14-0 and Elite Eight birth.  Booker was an all Big Eight selection in both 1993 and 1994 and was a first-team All-American in 1994.  He played for the Houston Rockets (1995-96), Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors in the NBA for 32 games."  Son Devin has followed in the footsteps of dad Melvin taking up the game.  The son is good too, he's a 6-3 180 pound guard and is rated the number 27 prospect in the Class of 2014.  Devin attended Mizzou's Midnight Madness in October.  (wikipedia)

Winning!!!
Actor Charlie Sheen did not originate the term winning! Every sports team and individual in history wants to win. Sometimes teams don’t win at the beginning of the season and finger pointing begins, that’s what occurred with my Lakers. It was the opposite with the Nets they began the season at a swift pace and then hitting the wall can be almost as unpleasant or detrimental. Just like the Lakers the Nets have fired their head coach. The Brooklyn Nets were on fire at the beginning of the season, was it Barclays Center or the proud fans of Brooklyn or maybe something else. The Nets were the talk of the NBA in November, in late December they are still the talk however this time the talk revolves around losing. We should have been alert enough to see the handwriting on the wall. Anytime your point guard details a team’s problem with the coach we know what’s next.

Point guard Deron Williams complained to the media about Avery Johnson’s coaching. Christmas Day the .500 Celtics played the Nets at Barclays and blew them out of the building. Nets fans were forced to “sit on their hands” because there wasn’t much to cheer about for the home team. Final score Celtics 93 Nets 76 and the team fell to a 14-13 mark. Yesterday afternoon with the team sitting at 14-14 the front office moved. General Manger Billy King announced Avery Johnson had been fired. Assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo was named interim coach in place of Johnson. The glitz and glamour of Barclays only sustains for but a brief period. long-term play on the court is more appealing to fans than a new building when a team is losing.

Bits n Pieces
The NBA Christmas games have grown in viewer numbers and the total schedule. There were 5 games played this year. I don’t remember prior years it seems 2012 might be the largest number of games played.  I’m going to check the records and get back to you on this one.

A shout out to Time Warner Cable’s Metro Sports Channel. The channel didn’t kick Mizzou to the curb as many (including me) feared. They have continued television coverage in the Kansas City Metro area despite the SEC move.

I don’t believe the NBA has a monopoly on celebrity fans. These are facts; celebrities are usually seated in the lower bowl of the arena. It’s probably easier for a TV camera to locate a celebrity in an 18, 000 seat arena versus a 75,000 football or 50,000 seat baseball stadium.

Spotted in the crowd at the Lakers-Knicks game were Chris Brown and Rihanna. I thought she kicked him to the curb after he “allegedly” beat her up and later pleaded guilty?   

The Bulls Derrick Rose is working out but no contact at this point. Coach Thibodeau says; “he’s not ahead or behind his rehab.” What do you think if he’s not cleared by the doctors to play until February or March should he play?

He’s tall
We always talk height as it relates to basketball, have you ever wondered who might be the tallest?  That honor belongs to Gheorge Muresan from Romania. Muresan played for the Washington Bullets (Wizards) from 1993-1997 and the New Jersey Nets from 1998-2000. He stood 7-7 and weighed 315 pounds. In second place the late Manute Bol who stood 7-6 and ¾ inches but a skinny 200 pounds. Bol had both Yao Ming and Shawn Bradley in height by ¾. 21 players 7-3 and taller have played in the NBA in the leagues history. (wikipedia)

Duke basketball
I read a story; don’t remember who wrote it but it was sometime in the last two years. The writer attempted to point out the glory days of Duke basketball were in the rear view mirror. I don‘t remember the basis for his conclusion however I’m curious if that writer is aware of Durham (NC) developments? Not only has Duke managed to remain competitive (number 1 in all weekly polls) the recruiting remains top notch too. November of 2011 6-4 shooting guard Matt Jones of DeSoto Texas committed. ESPN’s Top 100 had Jones rated the number 36 prospect, the good news would continue. September 2012 6-6 small forward Semi Olejeye from Ottawa Kansas signed with Duke, Olejeye is rated number 41 on the ESPN Top 100. The the earlier signing by Olejeye didn’t impact Jabari Parker‘s decision. Parker 6-8 220 pound small forward announced his intention to sign with Duke this month. Parker is the number 2 prospect in ESPN’s Top 100.

His vocabulary
If you lived in the New York Metro you’ve been listening to Knicks broadcaster Walt Frazier for a number of years. Frazier played 10 seasons for the Knicks and was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987. At the time the NBA selected its all-time Top 50 Players Frazier was one of the honorees. Those outside the metro able to view Knick games on NBA League Pass or NBA TV are familiar with his broadcasts. During a portion of a recent Knicks game Frazier used the word sagacious (suh-gey-shuh s) in a description of game action. I had no idea of the definition nor do I remember hearing the word in the past. For dummies like me I decided to check the dictionary; “having or showing acute mental discernment and keen practical sense; shrewd” Thus ends today’s teaching moment from Walt Frazier courtesy of Larry Laker. Am I a true fan?
Laker fans are certainly going to question my loyalty after reading this. I am disappointed the team has played so poorly this season but I didn’t have outlandish expectations. If this sounds as if it’s an excuse so be it. I thought the additions of Howard and Nash would improve the team, I hoped Meeks and Jamison would raise the level of bench play. I was questioned extensively by friends and acquaintances over the summer regarding Laker off-season moves. I told them “I thought the team had improved however I expected a championship the following season” (2013-14). Of course that observation was met with skepticism, “why wouldn’t you expect a championship based on the changes?” I am always on the side of caution; and there is a reason. I don't think anyone had a clue Nash would be unable to play his first regular season game in a Laker uniform until late December.   

I don’t think any of us had an idea the team would go 0-8 in the pre-season and Mike Brown would be fired after just the first 5 regular season games. Once Brown was fired we all assumed Phil Jackson would be hired in his place. Another bend in the road, Mike D’Antoni was named head coach and along with him a brand-new system. A new offensive and defensive scheme implemented without benefit of training camp. The key of course is the time it takes this team or any to gel; the Heat that first year certainly had bumps in the road and they didn’t change coaches. That Heat team eventually came together, they didn’t win a championship but they competed. Bottom line that’s all I wanted the Lakers to do this year, compete---next season hopefully a championship. If by some chance my team manages to win this year it’s just a bonus.

Re-inventing history
Kansas fans love them some Bill Self and they have good cause. Self’s won an NCAA championship and has continued the national spotlight that shines on the school. Allow a brief journey into the past back to a time when things were not so good in Lawrence Kansas. Coach Ted Owens (remember him) had come off of back to back seasons of 13-14 and 13-16 at the time Larry Brown replaced him. Brown led the school to a 135-44 record and an NCAA championship in 1988. Brown’s only problem has been the same throughout his career---staying in one place for any length of time, he left after 5 years. We know about James Naismith and Phog Allen of course, the modern day coach who placed Kansas on the national basketball map is one Roy Allen Williams. Hold on a minute Larry Laker are you promoting revisionist history? At the time he was hired the question was asked in this part of the country Roy who?

Williams became head coach at Kansas after serving as Dean Smith’s top assistant at North Carolina. During his 15 year tenure at Kansas the school registered 418 wins while losing 101 (.805 percentage). The one blemish if there is one many Kansas fans think he should have won a national championship. It’s my belief Bill Self and staff can sit in any family room in the nation thanks to Roy Williams. I know many of the Kansas faithful are still upset because he left to return “home” and coach North Carolina. Given the opportunity to return and coach at your alma mater who wouldn’t? Kansas State fans thought they had Bob Huggins for a considerable number of years. Less than a full year after the Huggins hire he was on his way to West Virginia his alma mater. I know a number of Kansas fans might not appreciate this, I’m sorry that’s the way I see it. Agree with me or not Roy Williams laid the ground work for much of your present day success.

This is a far different age
Imagine this story a newly hired coach registers a 38-47 after his first three years on the job. In the third year at the school the team finishes 11-17; you suppose that coach might still have a job? In this microwave/internet/twitter age we desire, no we demand instant results or answers. Depending on the state of a basketball program a coach must be allowed adequate time to recruit “his” players and implement his coaching philosophy. It’s possible the coach might be forced to cut players recruited by his predecessor (Larry Brown SMU). By the way the 38-47 was registered by Coach Mike Krzyzewski of Duke. Coming into the season Coach K’s won-loss record stands at 927–289; we could speculate what might have occurred if Coach K. had began his career in today’s highly volatile stage. The word of the day might be patience, patience and more patience.

Interesting reading
I read 76er and former Laker center Andrew Bynum’s comments on Kobe Bryant.  Just in case you didn’t read it Bynum indicates Kobe’s dominance with the ball possibly delayed the growth of his game. Surprise to all reading this I actually agree with his statement. Kobe might have inhibited the growth of Bynum’s game. On the other hand the issue that plagued Bynum in Los Angeles has carried over to Philadelphia, injuries.

It might be difficult to gain chemistry with a teammate who is out of the lineup and absent for extended portions of the season.  Naturally Bynum's comment prompted the Kobe haters to come forth. Example; a writer pointed to the fact of Kobe taking 30 shots in a recent game. Another contradicted the total pointing out it was actually 24. Don’t manipulate the figures to benefit your argument somebody is gonna catch you.

“What in the Wide World of Sports is a-going on here?”
Several of you might be unsure of the headline; it comes from the movie script of the 1974 movie “Blazing Saddles.” The line was meant to be comical; the line issued from the NCAA wasn’t quite as funny. First off, policing the vast numbers of student-athletes is a difficult task for the NCAA, recent decisions cause me to scratch my head. We remember the case of Shabazz Muhammad, how about Texas point guard Myck Kabongo? In both instances the players were guilty, as for the punishment that’s another matter.

Kabongo as with Muhammad had been suspended since the beginning of the season. The NCAA finally made a ruling; Kabongo would be suspended for the balance of the season. Texas immediately yelled foul and stated an appeal would be forthcoming. The NCAA said "okay he can play if he  re-pays the $475 in unauthorized travel the suspension will be reduced to 23 games."  Texas has played 11 games to date; this ruling would allow Kabongo to play in the February 13th game.  At that point Texas would have 7 games remaining on it's schedule.  No argument Kabongo is guilty but all this over $475 dollars, in addition isn't 23 games a season long suspension?     

Bits n Pieces
Coach D’Antoni’s first lineup with Steve Nash at Golden State. Nash of course was at the point; Morris was at shooting guard, Gasol at power forward. Howard was center and Kobe at small forward.  Metta World Peace first sub off the bench.       

I wasted two minutes of my life. Surfing the net I came across a video of a sports personality; the host was promoting Nick Saban as coach of the Lakers. I realize it was not intended to be serious but it wasn’t funny nor did it make any sense. For those unfamiliar with the name Saban is the football coach at Alabama.

No more Jason Whitlock from me; all I’m doing is providing fodder for his column and the silliness he promotes. Trust me, the guy doesn’t know jack about anything related to basketball. I question why Fox Sports hired him.

Number 12 Mizzou beat number 10 Illinois in the annual Braggin’ Rights Game. Flip Pressey had a terrible shooting game (3-19) yet the 5-11 point guard had 7 rebounds and 11 assists.  He was 6-6 from the free throw line and scored a total of 12 points. “Even though he didn't shoot the ball well, he controlled the game, Missouri Coach Frank Haith said.” (columbiadailytribune.com)

I will help if I can
If Larry Laker doesn’t have an answer he will research to provide one. After the Kansas-Ohio State on Saturday a fan posed a question in the Kansas City Star. He wrote; “why didn’t Mizzou recruit McLemore (St. Louis)?” He was referring to Kansas freshman Ben McLemore who led Kansas to victory with 22 points. Mizzou was on the recruiting trail however Kansas was too. McLemore chose Kansas over Mizzou, that simple. I guess we might ask the question regarding Semi Ojeleye of Ottawa (KS). Ojeleye clearly the best player in the State of Kansas chose Duke. Otto Porter (St. Louis) chose Georgetown over Mizzou, it happens. The story below on Jabari Parker is similar, Parker had a choice of a school (DePaul) blocks from his home but chose Duke.

We have gone way too far
As a nation we have continued our downward spiral in civility and manners. Once upon a time an athlete choice of a school was between him and maybe his family, no more. Jabari Parker the number 2 prospect in the Class of 2013 made Duke his choice on December 20th.  It was his decision to choose a school which he believes benefits him.  Some fans don't think he made the right choice and have told him so.  Parker reports he began receiving angry tweets some profane once he made his college choice known.  Figure this one out if you care.       

The choice is made  
On Wednesday I wrote; “he could choose among the following, Brigham Young, Duke, Florida, Michigan State or Stanford. I will probably be incorrect but my best guess is Duke or Stanford. No science here just pure speculation, check back and see if I'm correct.” Jabari Parker the number two prospect in the Class of 2013 chose Duke University over the other four schools. Just a belief on my part the highly touted Parker might be more than a one and done athlete.  I could forsee him returning after his freshman year rather than head for the NBA.  I could be wrong, who knows.     

Developing big man
Once upon a time Georgetown University held a status for developing big men. Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutombo and others. The number over the last several years has shrunk dramatically however we should add a name. Roy Hibbert of the Pacers is the name to add to those big men developed at Georgetown. The 7-2 278 pound Hibbert was considered a project at the time he enrolled at the school. He would eventually become the 17th pick in the first round of the 2008 draft by the Raptors.  The Raptors traded his rights to the Pacers for Jermaine O'Neal.  As with most big men it often requires them a longer period of time to adjust to NBA play.   

This was certainly the case for Hibbert. His growth as an NBA player began in a similar manner as it had at Georgetown. Hibbert started 42 games his rookie year with 7.1 ppg and 3.5 rebounds. Last season he finished the season at its highest point of his four year career. He finished the season at nearly 13.0 ppg and 9 rebounds plus 2 block shots a game. Hibbert was vital as the Pacers almost upset the Heat in the Eastern Conference playoffs last season. As Hibbert’s game continues to evolve I wonder if the Raptors might have expressed regret privately on their draft day trade.

The flow of talent from the continent
Nations on the African continent continue to be a hotbed of basketball talent. Much of the emerging talent is raw as with Joel Embiid. Embiid from Cameroon arrived in the U.S. last October; his basketball experience is a total of 18 months. Embiid enrolled at Montverde Academy (Montverde Fla.) on his arrival in the U.S. He’s transferred to Rock School (that’s the schools real name) in Gainesville Florida for his senior year. Embiid is a 7-0 220 pound power forward in the Class of 2013.

Offers are on the table from 11 schools which proves once again height prevails even with limited familiarity with the game. YouTube video details his offensive game which is smooth considering he’s only played the game less than two years. A teammate of Emdiid at Rock is Glenn Feidanga a 6-8 230 pound power forward. Feidanga is also from Africa although he arrived much sooner than his teammate. He’s from the Central African Republic and is also a highly regarded Class of 2013 prospect. Embiid verbally committed to Kansas during the early signing period.

I wonder if he read Wednesdays Words eye view? 
The Pelicans--hmmm Hornets Anthony Davis must have read Wednesday’s column on Damian Lillard. The story I pronounced Lillard Rookie of the Year. The Hornets lost the game against the Warriors but it certainly wasn’t his fault. Many scouts compared Davis’s game to the great Bill Russell. They pronounced his defensive game far ahead of his offense, while it might be true it certainly may have been unfair to Davis. Davis did come close to Russell type numbers in a recent game except in the block shot category. 15 points 16 rebounds, 7-7 from the free throw line with 4 steals and 1 blocked shot. The NBA career of Davis is still developing; this 6-10 220 pound power forward will gain muscle and develop an offense. Just think he’s still a teen, he won’t turn 20 until next March.  ROY (Rookie of the Year) will be either Davis or Lillard.

Pillow talk
The NCAA refused to approve the eligibility of Shabazz Muhammad due to questions surrounding unauthorized payments to the UCLA recruit.  Freshman Muhammad was cleared shortly after the season began. Wait there is more to the story, several news sources are reporting the NCAA investigator who handled the case has been fired. This story is ripe with National Inquirer or TMZ material.  It's reported the investigators boyfriend was over heard discussing the inquiry on an airline flight. He was reported to have stated; “Muhammad would never be declared eligible.” The conversation was heard by an attorney on the flight, the attorney contacted the Los Angeles Times with the story.  The Times is reported to have approached the NCAA with the story. 

December 20th
The date is not the end of the world predicted by the Mayan calendar, that date is December 21st.  December 20th could be cataclysmic too; four schools in the running for Jabari Parker will be eliminated.  Parker the number two prospect on the 2013 ESPN Top 100 list will announce his college choice.  He could choose among the following, Brigham Young, Duke, Florida, Michigan State or Stanford.  I will probably be incorrect but my best guess is Duke or Stanford.  No science here just pure speculation, check back and see if I'm correct.

Can he be better?
The Nets Brook Lopez says "he intends to rebound the ball better."  Lopez 7-0 and 265 pounds has the height and weight that says he should be able to rebound the ball.  His offensive numbers have increased each of his first four years in the NBA, as for the rebound story that's a different matter.  Lopez has averaged 7.5 rebounds over his brief career.

Can a player enhance his game at this point in his career?  It's my belief (right or wrong) you either have a nose for the ball or you don't.  Dennis Rodman is another example, as flamboyant as he was off the court on it he understoon rebounding position and angles.  Can Lopez raise his number of course if he works at it.  Will Lopez become a 14 or 15 rebound a game player, I doubt it.  

Who’s the man?
A view prevailed after the draft; it lasted through the NBA Summer League schedule and into training camp. Everyone and their brother believed (and said as much), “you might as well inscribe Anthony Davis’s name on the Rookie of the Year trophy.” Davis arrived in the NBA after winning an NCAA Championship, in addition it was noted he would be a defensive presence. No disrespect intended toward Davis he’s been good, Lillard’s been better. Most of us were probably unfamiliar with Damian Lillard or his school Weber State. Weber State is located 30+ miles north of Salt Lake City in the City of Ogden.   

The Blazers made Lillard a 6-3 195 pound point guard the 6th pick in the 1st round of the 2012 Draft.  I'm not sure if this is original or not but he said it; "if you don't prepare, you prepare to fail."  The youngster sounds confident without being arrogant, he appears to be a very stable young man. Lillard stated; “I wear 0, I’m from Oakland, Weber State is in Ogden.” His numbers through mid-December, 18.4 ppg while dishing out 6.4 assists. Recently he light up Tony Parker and the Spurs with 29 points, 6 assists and 7 rebounds as he aided his team to a 98-90 victory. Did you see the 3-pointer Blazer rookie Damian Lillard score as the clock expired? The shot was the winning basket over the Hornets 95-92, can you say “ice-water in his veins.” Google it or check it out on NBA.com.

Bits n Pieces
Did you notice Ricky Rubio is back? He returned over the weekend. Came off the Wolves bench with 8 points, 9 assists and 3 steals in 18 minutes. The Wolves managed to beat the Mavs 114-106.

“We don’t love you anymore” might be the indication. A smattering of boos was heard periodically for Jeremy Lin in his MSG return. Unfortunately couldn’t stay with the game, the Mizzou Tigers were on another channel.

As for Mizzou a fan borrowed from the UPS slogan. The sign she held said “what can Brown do you.” A reference to transfer Jabari Brown’s first game in a Mizzou jersey.

I read emails too; a number in the NBA populace love NBA analyst Jeff Van Gundy. I just happen to not be in that number.

“Whitlock in Wonderland” is the title I've given to the latest Kobe fable spun by Fox Sports writer Jason Whitlock.  I've lost count, this is either the 3rd or 4th fantasy regarding Kobe he's written this year.      

Tit for Tat
If you’ve read Words for any length of time you recognize its basketball driven. At times there is a departure and this is one of them. My Kansas friends continue to send emails to the local paper uncomplimentary on Mizzou sports. The height of this silliness must be the Kansas fan who laughed at Mizzou’s 5-7 first year record in the SEC. It would appear he was laughing at the wrong team, Kansas football was 1-11 this past season.  Two years ago they finished 2-10. Once Mizzou officially announced the intention to become an SEC member the hate began. The basketball coach and university chancellor in a united voice indicated they had no desire to play Mizzou at any point. As mentioned the hate for schools leaving the Big XII only applies to Mizzou. Kansas recently played Colorado formerly of the Big XII.

The lay of the land remains in a state of flux
Big East Basketball is falling apart or perhaps dissolving might be a better term. The simple and short of the matter this 15-team conference founded in 1979 is suffering “football” hiccups. This conference founded specifically as a basketball conference is unraveling; seven non-football schools are now threatening to leave. For purposes of explaining the issue I will refer to Syracuse, Notre Dame and Pitt as football schools. These schools and others are on the way out the door. The seven non-football schools are; DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Villanova. No official decision has been reached at this point however the conference remains pretty much unstable. This entire mess has become a gigantic money drive by all parties involved. Across the nation other conferences have experienced the same story. One fact natural rivalries and geography have been tossed into the trash can, they no longer matter.

He’s Air no more
Dwayne Wade is no longer associated with the Jordan brand; he’s signed a deal with  Li Ning
a shoe and apparel company headquartered in Beijing China. Li Ning is the new kid on the block so to speak having been founded as recently as 1990. I thought it interesting Li Ning placed its American headquarters and first store in Portland Oregon. Nike world headquarters is located in Beaverton, city boundaries are but a short 10 miles from Portland. Li Ning has continued to grow as a company and gaining a high profile athlete such as Wade certainly increases the profile of the company in the U.S. A current list of Li Ning clients includes Baron Davis, Metta World Peace and Damon Jones.

“Don’t give up; don’t ever give up”
The inspirational quote above was delivered by North Carolina State’s Jim Valvano as he battled cancer. He eventually lost his life to the disease but his words have provided inspiration for the ages. I believe it might have provided inspiration to Stanley Roberts. Once upon a time LSU recruited two giant basketball players Shaquille O’Neal and Stanley Roberts. The school had two 7-footers in its lineup at a time a number of rivals had none. Truth is told seeing the two in college I was more impressed with Roberts than O’Neal. It appeared to me Roberts offensive game was superior to that of O’Neal.

Once the two arrived in the NBA their careers progressed in opposite directions, O’Neal’s career is well known what about Roberts? Roberts had a 14-year NBA career but never progressed to the level many of us thought. Once he retired financial issues and health problems caused a great deal of strife in his life. He did recover and later enrolled again at LSU to resume his college studies. Last Friday at age 42 Roberts received his undergraduate degree. The journey has been long and difficult for him, his dedication and commitment have provided him fulfillment and something no one can ever take from him----the college degree that bares the name; Stanley Corvet Roberts.

You can’t do that anymore
By now you are aware the NBA has instituted a no flop rule this season. The penalties are clear however we need to see the rule applied first. The NBA is a little late, the chief architect Vlade Divac no longer plays, second place might belong to Derek Fisher who is now playing again.  Floppers have always bothered me because of the phoniness. It looks a little ridiculous for a 180 pound guard to knock a 275 pound player to the floor. The block-charge in the NBA (and college) has always been one of the most difficult calls for an official. The prospect of monetary penalties should certainly curtail flopping. I thought the most interesting complaint came from Blake Griffin, this is his quote; "it’s a cash grab by the NBA."  If I were to chose an All-Flop team Griffin would certainly be a member.  In any event two members have already been chosen, not by me the NBA.  Reggie Evans and Gerald "Crash" Wallace are the first two players to be fined for flopping.  Wonder who might be next?   

He certainly has hops
We’ve witnessed Thunder player Russell Westbrook’s leaping ability over the past four years. Recently this 6-3 guard demonstrated the skill against 7-3 Roy Hibbert of the Pacers. As Hibbert prepared to dunk the basketball Westbrook came flying in from the weak side and blocked the shot. To be fair Hibbert had bent down after receiving the pass and he was rising to dunk the ball. This is probably not the best word description of a first-rate play. Is this the second or third time?
I guess Laker fans are okay with the lousy play of the Lakers? We are not smart enough to realize there are key areas of the game requiring improvement. I can’t remember if this is the second or third time I’m forced to call out Magic Johnson. The headline read; “Showtime played defense, this is not Laker basketball.” That was the Fox Sports story, the quote courtesy of none other than one of my Laker favorites Earvin “Magic” Johnson. Exactly what is Johnson attempting to prove with his critical remarks? Owner Jim Buss, General Manager Mitch Kupchak, Mike D’Antoni and his coaching staff are not pleased either. This team assembled over the summer has failed to play at the level most of us expected. I wanna pose this question once again to Magic, “are you trying to prove to ESPN (your employer) you’re not beholding to the Lakers?” I would remind him once again what a terrible coach he was the brief period he managed the team. On the other hand in his current position it’s always easy to criticize than to fix a problem.

Bits n Pieces
The collegiate season is young however the Southern Methodist University Mustangs are 8-1 as this is written. The team is playing well for 72-year old Coach Larry Brown, should be an interesting season.

Did you hear this one? Blake Griffin claims former NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens begged the Clippers for a 10-day tryout. Strange as it might sound Owens actually played basketball in high school and college. The 6-3 224 pound Owens certainly has the size but beginning an NBA career at age 39?

I hope he doesn’t try to play again; the he is Utah State junior forward Danny Berger. The brief story is the 6-7 Berger collapsed during the teams practice.  He went into cardiac arrest shortly thereafter.  Anytime I read stories on basketball players with heart conditions my mind drifts. Back to Hank Gaithers of Loyola Marymount and the Celtics Reggie Lewis.

It’s reported Wolves point guard Ricky Rubio will be activated for tomorrow nights game. They play the Mavs but at this point there is no indication if Rubio will start. He should be able to stay in front of opposing guard Derek Fisher.   

I’m curious; Kansas fans continue to flood the Kansas City Star every time an article is printed regarding Mizzou athletics. I know they are from Kansas fans by the nicknames they give themselves. Kansas continues play in the Big XII Conference while Mizzou has become an SEC school. The teams no longer compete against one another, why the continued ill will expressed by a segment of the Kansas faithful?

Can you say snail pace?
The NCAA is dragging its feet once again. This is not a guilty or innocent story it’s a why so long story? The Longhorns of Texas are not very good so far this season. It’s possible they might be a little better if point guard Myck Kabongo was able to play. Texas is unable to play Kabongo; the NCAA is investigating whether he received improper benefits from an NBA agent over the summer. I think all of us realize an investigation cannot be resolved in the hour it takes to view an episode of CSI or Law and Order.  We need to travel no further than Mizzou where the investigative body of the NCAA is yet to clear Frank Haith. How long for Haith, can you say almost two years if he's not cleared at the end of the season.  There is a key difference in both cases, should Haith be found guilty the university could simply choose to terminate him. No harm, no foul just embarrassing for the school, fans and alumni.  If Texas should choose to play Kabongo and the investigation points to his guilt Texas could end up forfeiting games. The old adage; "damned if you do, damned if you don't" certainly applies.  Team play might improve with Kabongo in the lineup but is it worth  possible forfeiture of games?

Who, What, Where?
Are you familiar with Farmingdale State College, how about AJ Matthews? Neither names familiar to you, well don’t feel terrible the athlete and school were unfamiliar to me too. Farmingdale State is located in East Farmingdale New York about 40+ miles from downtown Manhattan. As for Matthews he’s a senior at the school, it might be a little difficult to overlook him if he walked into a room, he stands a shade over 7 feet and weighs 215 pounds. His basketball numbers are certainly noteworthy, 27.2 points per game 15.4 rebounds and 4.0 blocks. We might conclude it may be easy to compile those numbers with his height and the fact he’s playing Division III ball. Evidently folks who get paid see a potential star on the horizon. NBA scouts have begun showing up at his games despite the fact few Division III schools have managed NBA careers. The last might have been Devean George drafted by the Lakers in 1999. George managed an 11-year NBA career with three teams. I’ve set up an alert for myself in order to track his progress this season, it will be interesting if he manages to secure a draft spot.

Derek, Derek
Longtime Laker fan that I am, love me some Derek Fisher.  I must be the person to inform Derek his career is over, has been for at least 3 years. After the Lakers traded him he played out the season as a member of the Thunder. The season concluded and the Thunder chose to not resign him. As training camp opened I read stories indicating Fisher was searching for a playing job not in the front office as we might suspect. He wanted to play again despite his age and mileage on his body. Mark Cuban’s Mavs (who are going through something) signed Fisher. I guess we could say there is a youth movement working in Dallas. The Mavs lost 39-year old point guard Jason Kidd to the Knicks; he’s been replaced by 38-year old Derek Fisher.

Boy he’s really tall!
You might remember an alert on Mamadou Ndiaye from Senegal. Ndiaye is attending Huntington Beach Christian School in Southern California. He has another distinction that sets him apart; he’s 7-5 and 310 pounds. With a height of 7 feet 5 inches he is the tallest player in the nation, high school, college or the NBA.  ESPN's list of of the Top 100 prospects he's number 77.  Ndiaye verbally commented to the University of California-Irvine on November 14th.  He certainly is considered a project due to the limited time he's played the game.  I have a question for you, whens the last time you heard a coach or scout refer to a 5-11 or 6-0 prospect as a project?  Viewing video of Ndiaye in action he moves very mechanical at times, at 7-5 in high school he's easily a foot taller than most opposing players.  That fact alone makes his numbers (blocked shots) somewhat misleading.    

His appearance continues to be pushed back
If you’ve been reading Words for a period you know I defended Andrew Bynum. His skill set I believed made him the 2nd best center in the NBA.  I was Disappointed when he was traded to the 76ers.  Injuries prevented him from attending training camp and he was missing in action at the start of the season.  News reports first indicated his return to the court was imminent, then it became next week, next week then became mid-December.  Now it's reported Bynum’s status is unknown.  I’m sure if the 76ers were aware he was “damaged goods” they never would have made the trade. I hope he is able to return to the court at some point this season.

I wish I could figure this one out
I wanted to see UCLA specifically Shabazz Muhammad‘s game, the guide indicated they were to play Texas. Naturally I figured the game would be in Austin, wrong, it was played in Houston. Not only was it played in Houston it was played in Reliant Stadium home of the the NFL Texans. When I turned the game on 10 minutes after it started the number of empty seats disguised as spectators was evident. I have continued to ask this question why must we continue to schedule basketball games in football stadiums? I’d like to see the shooting percentages for a team in a football versus basketball arena. In any event back to the game, it wasn’t a very good game to watch. Muhammad aided UCLA to a 65-63 win. His game, only fair 16 points 0 turnovers but 0 assists and only 2 rebounds. He’s playing the shooting guard but 2 rebounds for a 6-6 guard are caused for questions in my mind. Later I read the attendance was a generous 3,000 fans in a football stadium. I’ve attended state championship high school games with those type of numbers.

30,000 points  
A significant number of the basketball universe hates Kobe Bryant. I realize that is a harsh word but my statement is true (see Jason Whitlock, Fox Sports). As I’ve stated in the past the criticism almost never relates to his basketball prowess. The haters point out “he’s arrogant, opinionated and other negative adjectives only they see.” I guess these same folks haven’t encountered Michael Jordan up close. I wonder if they remember his Hall of Fame acceptance speech where he trashed several individuals in his basketball past. MJ fits much of the same criteria I often hear expressed about Bryant arrogant, opinionated and other negatives. Last Wednesday evening he joined a very exclusive club, the 30,000 point club. Currently there are 4 other members in this very exclusive number. Missing from the list is a number of outstanding NBA players. Injuries or their skill began a downward decline as they entered their 30’s. The all-time NBA leader in points scored is Kareem Abdul Jabbar at 38,387. The others;

One other note, while researching this portion of Words eye view I discovered Celtic great Larry Bird is no longer a Top 25 scorer. Active players Kevin Garnett, Dirk Nowitzki, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce have moved ahead of Bird forcing him out of the Top 25.

UCLA basketball
Only folks close to the source probably know what’s going on. One of the most prestigious basketball programs has developed the hiccups. UCLA has lost 2 players in 3 days; this season was to be a turn around for the program after last season. Ben Howland and staff were able to secure the services of two high profile prospects. Our focus is on Shabazz Muhammad, 6-6 shooting guard and number one (or two prospect) in the Class of 2012. As mentioned earlier NCAA suspension had not allowed him on the court until the teams’ fourth game. Lack of practice with teammates and the pace of his first game was evident. Since that first game Muhammad has played additional games and the reviews are mixed, he continues to demonstrate the talent many scouts foresaw. At the same time he needs to ramp up elements of his game. One specific area was a comment I heard expressed by Seth Greenberg former coach and ESPN analyst; “He (Muhammad) needs to learn to use his right hand.” A natural left-handed athlete Greenberg states learning to use his right hand will expand his offensive game. Is Muhammad good, the question can be answered in this manner? I would be satisfied with 5% of his NBA salary over the course of his career. Am I stating future All-Pro, certainly not but with today's NBA salaries. According to Real GM the minimum salary for an NBA rookie is $473,604.

What is fear?
The name of a sports team is intended to strike fear in the heart of the opposition. That’s the view of a number of folks inside and outside the media. Channel surfing I passed by CNN and this change was discussed as part of a news story, not sports mainstream news. What change, the proposed name change of the New Orleans NBA franchise. Must a sports franchise nickname always strike fear? Lets check out a few NBA, NFL and NHL teams. How bout the Orlando Magic who were anointed with their team name due to Disney World? I can’t speak personally but Dolphins (Miami) are supposed to be friendly creatures.

A Net (Brooklyn) surrounds the basketball goal; I guess it could become fearful if your team is missing shots at it. How about my Lakers who were originally based in Minneapolis? They took Lakers from the thousands of lakes in the State of Minnesota, seen any lakes in Los Angeles? Global warming could cause us all Heat (Miami) problems but that might be a reach. Seen any scary Penguins (Pittsburgh) lately? Owner Benson has the right to chose whatever name he thinks fits despite those of us outside the state and city might approve.  I guess the complaints might be minimized if he’d done what former Charlotte owner Bob Johnson did. I’m unsure how the name was chosen but several sources claim the name BOB-cats was actually named for owner Bob.

The voice of reason
Several Laker fans in Kansas City are asking me; “is it panic time yet?” They approach me as if I have inside information (which I don‘t)! This is a portion of my response to them, I noted them in bold so you would take note. Excuse number 1, no Steve Nash, excuse number 2, defensive failures at points. Excuse number 3, Kobe dominating the ball too much, excuse 4, teams slow adjustment to D’Antoni’s system. Excuse 5, Gasol’s tendinitis, excuse 6 backup point guard Blake injured. Excuse 7 Howard’s poor free throw shooting. Just kidding folks thus far Howard at 75 or 80% is light years of Andrew Bynum. I was wrong; he’s not a back to the basket center but runs the floor like a gazelle. At the same time blocking shots and the threat of a block has often caused the opposition to hesitate. Back to the first part of this story, there are probably 8 to 10 additional excuses however I’ve moaned enough for one column.

I’m surprised
I don't know about you but I'm shocked, no surprised!  It's December 7th and the Kentucky Wildcats record is 5 wins and 3 losses.  Has the Calipari magic run its course, will the Cats disappear never to be a force again?  Have Cat fans made the adjustment this years team might not be as good as the NCAA Championship team?  An information crawl on television indicated the Cats failed to finish in the Top 25 poll for the first time since 1990.  Of course its early, there is yet time for this team to develop.  As for the Calipari magic, is there really such a thing?

Did the Heat mail this one in?
Carmelo Anthony was forced out of the Knick lineup. Stitches would prevent him from playing against the Heat in Miami. No Carmelo no problem, point guard Raymond Felton led the way with 27 points and 7 assists. Rasheed Wallace, Steve Novak and J.R. Smith all scored in double figures off the Knick bench. The Knicks occupy first place in the Atlantic Division 1 ½ games ahead of the Heat.

Let’s be fair
I'm watching the NIT Season Tip-Off and Doris Burke is providing color commentary; I've read a number of uncomplimentary complaints regarding Burke. It might be noted few relate to her competence. The criticism often expressed involves Burke’s attractiveness rather than competency. If a male was in place rather than Burke would we utilize the same criteria, I think not. The NBA and colleges don’t have a monopoly on this issue; we witness these “airheads” in all sports broadcasting. While discussing looks there are a few male analysis that could not be described as handsome. Hannah Storm, Krista Blunk, Cheryl Miller and Ann Schatz and others perform their role on the same level as most men. One other fact to digest, where is it written women must provide commentary or write regarding women’s sports only? Males have been providing play by play, writing on women’s sports for years. Ask Cheryl’s brother Reggie how he became such a prolific shooter? He’s admitted on more than one occasion Cheryl “schooled” him on the backyard court.

Say what?
We all know the brilliant career of Paul Pierce; most likely this former Kansas athlete will be enshrined in both Hall of Fames. Kansas fans love to point out the number of pros in the NBA but an interesting fact. Despite the success of Pierce can you name a handful of successful big men? Kansas has sent a large number of big men into the NBA, most have become journeyman in the NBA. I was viewing a game recently and former player turned analyst Stephen Bardo pointed to an area. He said and I paraphrase; “Many Kansas big men don’t have successful NBA careers; the offense they run (Kansas) the ball is delivered to them in areas on the court NBA defenses don’t permit.“ The following players had successful collegiate careers but were reduced to journeyman roles in the NBA. Nick Collision, Raef LaFrentz and Greg Ostertag, the jury is still deliberating on the Morrison twins. Injuries curtailed his NBA career but we could state 6-10 Danny Manning had more than a journeyman role. Current Kansas big man Jeff Withey registered an impressive game against San Jose State, 16 points, 12 rebounds and 12 blocked shots. Withey is listed as a potential first NBA round draft choice on several mock sites. Bardo’s observation on Kansas offensive schemes causes me to be cautious in any NBA worthiness.

I missed this one
Of all the names the Hornets might chose I missed this one. Purchasing the team last April Tom Benson stated he wanted a name more closely identified with New Orleans and Louisiana. The deed might have been done, USA Today is reporting “the Hornets will be renamed the Pelicans as soon as next season.” I didn’t realize the significance of the name, “Pelicans was the former name of the city's minor league baseball team from 1887-1959 and 1977.” In addition the Brown Pelican is the State bird of Louisiana. There might be a domino effect; the Hornets name rights might move back to Charlotte its original location. Saints owner Tom Benson owns the rights to the name Pelicans. The nickname for the sports teams of Tulane University is the Green Wave, the school’s mascot--Riptide the Pelican. A number of people including many in the NBA media are critical of the proposed name change. A Pelican doesn’t exactly strike fear in anyone but it’s the owners’ choice.  The name choice will eventually become comfortable in the same manner of the Wizards and Thunder.  Both of those choices were underwhelming at the time, we have just grown accustom to them. 

Bits n Pieces
Amar’e Stoudemire reports he will return to the Knicks lineup by Christmas. He further indicates there is no problem for him to assume the role of a sub.  Stoudemire might become the permanent 6th man with the Knick team playing so well.  What do you think?     

It was mentioned several weeks ago veteran Rick Majerus’s health issues forced him to take a leave of absence. He would be unable to coach the St. Louis University Billikens this season. Over the weekend the 64-year old Majerus died of heart failure. The basketball world will miss Majerus and what he brought to the game.

At times you make commitments which cause you to later think “that was stupid!” I assumed (incorrectly) with the additional sports channels added to my system I would be able to view basketball from dawn till sunset and beyond. I forgot the key factor I have no ability to clone myself. Games I want to view often conflict with others. Then we must consider the overlap factor, I began watching a game and then be unable to see the conclusion due to another critical game starting. Picture in picture does not work for me if that was going to be your suggestion.

Monday I wrote Mizzou’s backcourt might suffer losing Michael Dixon. That might be the case however there is hope on the horizon. Transfer Jabari Brown will be eligible in a couple of weeks; this 6-5 205 pound shooting guard has all the tools. I’m not sure what occurred at Oregon but if he has his head screwed on straight we might be saying Michael Who?

Speaking of Mizzou somewhere in America there is a disciple of Nostradamus who must be a basketball fan! He wrote; Mizzou will never win an NCAA Championship with Frank Haith at the helm. He (or she) could be correct Haith might never win a championship. I guess the person is comfortable making such a bold prediction.         

I made critical remarks regarding the LeBron James shoe and its cost. I have a new target, Michael Jordan. I know he’s an owner (Bobcats) and has been retired for years. MJ’s current status didn’t bring to an end his Nike shoe line. Yesterday Nike introduced the Jordan XX8 (28) a cool $250.

Yesterday 6-11 225 pound Karl Towns Jr. made his college choice known. He gave his verbal commitment to Kentucky and is reclassifying his class status. Instead of a 2015 graduation Towns will leave a year earlier. I misunderstood his Olympic play last summer; I reported he’d played on the Dominican age 16 and under team. This was not correct; he was on the Olympic “big-boy” team of Al Horford, Charlie Villanueva and Francisco Garcia. As for the question of his parentage mom is originally from the Dominican Republic

Hope they are able to sustain this effort
Laker fans are hoping for several repeat performances similar to their game against the Nuggets rather than the Magic or Rockets.  You might think I was referring to the 28 point 20 rebound game 3 block shots of Dwight Howard. That was certainly noteworthy but the teams Achilles heel at least to date---the bench made its present known. Antwan Jamison emerged from the bench shot 13-19 from the floor (.684) and 5-10 from the 3-point line (.500). His game total 33 points but he also managed to grab 12 rebounds. But wait there’s more, backup shooting guard Jody Meeks also made his presence known. Meeks went 7-9 from the floor (.778) and 7-8 from the 3-point line (.875) and scored 21 points. Both players were certainly in a zone Friday night with their crisp shooting.

Sorry you still can’t convince me  
It’s not my intent to continue a dialogue on Greg Popovich, in fact this will be the last covered by me unless there are developments worth comment. Popovich’s coaching move against the Heat has been validated by several in the sports community. I don‘t care how many line up on Popovich‘s side I continue to maintain it was incorrect. I’m not okay with him sending 3 of his starters and a key reserve home. Many of you might think because I’m a Laker fan and they too have an older roster I might be in favor of this move. I’ve heard all sorts of positive superlatives tossed in Popovich’s direction, “he’s an NBA Champion coach, and another stated “he (Popovich) knows what’s best for his team. 

Friday morning ESPN’s Mike Greenberg attempted to draw a comparison to NFL teams benching key players near the playoffs. Greenberg‘s off-base on his argument, the two sports are not comparable in this manner. This from a Spurs fan; “Popovich checked the schedule back in July and made the decision at that point.” If you believe that explanation you might also believe in Bigfoot and alien abductions. Sorry folks I cannot agree with Pop on this one and I believe the commissioner is correct in some sort of punishment for the Spurs. Bottom line this could have all been avoided if Popovich had been sneaky. Why didn’t he just sit them on the bench and play them limited minutes? He could have lied when questioned why they played so little (migraine, upset stomach etc.) Sending them back to San Antonio on a commercial flight became an insult to the league. NOTE: As I was completing this NBA office announced the Spurs organization will be fined $250,000

A decision was reached
Michael Dixon Jr. at Mizzou is over, this talented basketball player is withdrawing from school. He says he intends to complete his education (and basketball possibly) at another university. By now you might be aware Dixon had been suspended, hadn’t played a single minute since the start of the season. The prospect of a Dixon and Phil Pressey backcourt could be one of the best in the nation, now it’s only Pressey. A rape allegation against Dixon was raised last August, the Columbia ((MO) Police Department investigated the complaint but found no evidence to file criminal charges. Dixon remained unable to play due to possible disciplinary action by the school. Last Thursday a second female accuser came forward indicating Dixon had raped her in 2010. The university and Coach Mike Anderson informed her they would support her decision no matter the outcome. Later she declined to press charges “because he was a basketball player.” This is troubling on several levels, it appears Dixon has issues the most telling portion of this story his attempt to maintain innocence. The second accuser might have just been a scorned woman, the 2010 incident a different story. Worst yet is allowing friend and former teammate Kim English to defend you. Hopefully Dixon will learn a lesson and understand NO really means NO!

I hate the term
Several weeks back I explained how I hate the term BCS which has wormed its way into collegiate basketball discussions. BCS is a measurement for Division I collegiate football teams not basketball. I’ve read another term I’d like to see the media curtail ---mid-major, what exactly is a mid-major? Is it student enrollment or conference affiliation? Allow me to cite a couple of examples. If we just looked at student numbers it would appear Notre Dame rather than Sam Houston State would be a mid-major. The student enrollment at Notre Dame is 11,733, at Sam Houston State in Huntsville (TX) it's 17,618. Is the criteria different for a Cal-Poly beating UCLA or Youngstown State upending Georgia?

His announcement
Several might remember the story written on Karl Towns Jr; he's a 6-11 high school sophomore.  He spent last summer playing for the 16 and under Dominican Republic team coached by John Calapari of Kentucky.  Towns is from Metuchen (NJ) however one parent is from the Dominican Republic.  Entering his second year of high school the youngster has decided to announce his college choice tomorrow.  The schools on his list, North Carolina, Rutgers, Florida and Kentucky.  It should be noted Towns was in Lexington (KY) last weekend for a visit.
