Basketball from a fans perspective

He said what?
My friend Stephen A. Smith has done it again, I’m unsure how these subjects become topics of discussion this is one of the latest.  On ESPN’s First Take Smith said; “If Stephen Curry wins an NBA Championship this season he could surpass Michael Jordan.”  Smith left himself an out in a sense he said the Warriors had to win the 2015-16 championship.  I’ve become a cynic with a number of the sports stories floating about and this is one of them.  There are obstacles in Curry’s path that could impact 7 championships even winning a second this season.  The guy is a light outs shooter but consider the Warriors at this point are built to accentuate Curry’s proficiency.  What occurs with the Warriors should Draymon Green or Klay Thompson leave in free-agency?

Andre Iguodala and Andrew Bogut are 31 years old, Leandro Barbosa is 33 and Shaun Livingston is 30, do you see the direction I’m headed?  I’m not a doom and gloom guy but an injury to a key player could derail any championship aspirations.  The Spurs, Clippers and Cavs are ageing but can you imagine a young 76er (speculation on my part) Laker or Celtic team rising to replace the Spurs, Clippers and Cavs.  I’m not going to flat-out state 7 championships can’t be accomplished lets just say It’s highly doubtful.  In closing I hope this doesn’t appear a hater generated commentary, I believe a number of sports discussions are useless unless the objective of the discussion might be obtainable.  This one certainly calls for a great deal of dominos to fall into place.

Better things to do
The annual Braggin’ Rights game between Big 10 Illinois and SEC Mizzou is sold out except in 2015.  Scottrade Center in St. Louis has a capacity of nearly 20,000 for basketball but only 14,456 souls were in attendance.  With both teams treading water thus far it’s likely difficult for fans to be energized about the game despite a 35 year history.  With two days remaining before Christmas maybe fans had better things to do last minute shopping as an example.  Mizzou fell behind early and trailed by as much as 20 points before mounting a furious comeback eventually falling 68-63.  The final score made the game appear closer than the actual outcome.  As for attendance the figure represented the second lowest in 27 years.

"Escape from L.A."
If you have read Words any length of time you recognize I’m a movie buff.  In this instance I’m referencing the 1996 John Carpenter directed movie Escape from L.A., this was second installment based on the Snake Plissken character.  This time the setting was Los Angeles, see it on video I can’t give away the entire movie.  There might be a number of Clippers wanting to “Escape from L.A.”  Leading off might be Paul Pierce, he’s at the end of a Hall of Fame career and home is Los Angeles.  Perhaps he wanted to retire an NBA Champion in his home town which appears unlikely this season.  Lance Stephenson arrived with baggage and by all indications has been a good citizen.  The problem so far he’s not been the player he was several years back with the Pacers.  Josh Smith wore out his welcome with the Hawks, played in Detroit, then Houston and signed over the summer with the Clippers.  It’s reported Smith’s had disagreements with the coaching staff and his Clipper teammates.  A team thought to be deep in talent is talented however the talent is not as deep as we were led to believe.

Directing traffic for this band of Mysterians is Glenn “Doc” Rivers.  Rivers is held in high esteem in some circles as a coach after all he’s got an NBA Championship on his resume.  I had to include this letter; “can someone please get doc rivers some players?  Gosh, this guy can’t get a break with this lineup.”  Someone needs to explain to the writer Doc is the general manager too he can secure any players within the Clippers cap space.  All is not lost the Clippers will make the playoffs are they capable of advancing to an NBA Championship?  As this team is presently constructed it’s highly unlikely, their starters match up with the upper echelon teams of the NBA but the bench remains a question mark.  This is a down year at Staples Center for both residents however the Clippers do have an edge, oh well there’s always next season both.  NOTE:  By the time you read this it’s likely the Clippers have beaten the Lakers on Christmas Day, does this win solve the problems of this team, I doubt it.

Basketball from a fans perspective

No government intervention
I’m watching the Louisville-Kentucky game on television and my mind drifted to Wichita State and Kansas.  The two universities are about 144 miles apart but never play one another.  Well that’s not quite true, the NCAA Tournament forced them to play with Wichita State the winner.  If you remember the history the two Kentucky schools wouldn’t play either, it was more Kentucky refusing to play Louisville rather than the other way around.  Louisville had lobbied for years to play its cross state rival with Kentucky turning a deaf ear to the request.

In any event the Kentucky State Legislature had to “force” the two schools to play one another, threats of withholding state funds allowed for the change.  I would hate for the same situation to repeat itself in the State of Kansas government involvement in a sporting event.  It’s Kansas which appears in the driver’s seat for its refusal to play Wichita State.  If they played this year the 2015-16 season would appear to be a clear advantage for Kansas to play Wichita State.  The Jayhawks are number two in the nation and appear a strong contender again while this years Shocker team is not as tough as in the past.

Bits n Pieces
This is no prediction of future NBA success lets just state I’m impressed with the game of Denzel Valentine of Michigan State.  Valentine has an NBA ready body at 6-6 and 220 pounds.  He’s not a point guard but is an able distributor of the ball in addition to rebounding, to use the terminology of the day he’s a combo guard.  Don’t be shocked if you hear the commissioner announce his name in the 2016 NBA Draft.

Is it important for Kobe Bryant to play in the All Star game in his final season?  I have no idea as far as the player is concerned, on a personal note I don’t believe it’s necessary for fans to vote Kobe a starter. Although Kobe’s play has improved over the last several games I’m unsure if he is worthy of an All Star selection.  Maybe fans are recognizing the greatness that was in the player.

I cannot, I cannot watch all 5 NBA Christmas Day games.  I must continue to repeat that refrain to myself; I must convince myself no good purpose serves from sitting in front of the television all morning all afternoon and evening.  One or two games are okay but games beginning at 11:00 a.m. Central and concluding at or near midnight is far too much basketball.  Who’s got that much time for the NBA?

The NCAA
Major power schools never commit misdeeds or they failed to be caught.  Once again the hammer that is the NCAA smacked the heck out of school.  The University of Hawaii the Rainbow Warriors are prohibited from post-season play for one year and loss of two scholarships over the next two seasons.  Former Coach Gib Arnold is the guilty party he should be forced to walk the plank, okay I’ve seen too many pirate movies.  “The NCAA said an investigation found Arnold failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance and also provided false or misleading information.”  The quote sounds familiar yes it does almost word for word the NCAA announcement we heard for Larry Brown and SMU also on probation.

The letters immediately begin flying in; “How come Duke, North Carolina and Kentucky are never penalized?”  One fan even returned to a quote from former UNLV Coach Jerry Tarkanian.  The late coach had his battles with the NCAA over the course of his career.  In any event "Tark the Shark" was reported to have said; “The NCAA will get so mad at Kentucky they will place Cleveland State on four more years of probation.”  This is certainly no attempt on my part to call out any school but it does appear only “smaller” schools appear to have their hands smacked by the NCAA.

The real history
Don’t originate trivia if you are not prepared to provide the proper answer.  The first question of the quiz read; “In what city did the Lakers first began play?”  We had a choice of Rochester (NY), Detroit and Minneapolis.  I checked Detroit and got buzzed indicating I'd picked the wrong city.  Yes I said Detroit as in the Michigan City, that's where the forerunner of today’s Laker franchise first commenced play.

In 1946 the Detroit Gems began play in the National Basketball League but played only one year losing 40 of 44 games.  In 1947 two Minneapolis businessmen purchased the franchise for an astronomical $15,000 and moved the team to their home town.  The State of Minnesota has a theme; “Land of 10,000 Lakes” which the new owners used in the teams name hence Lakers.  I have no manner of contacting the originators of the trivia contest but they were wrong.

Best team to have never won
The 1977 NBA Finals saw the Blazers of Portland matched against the Philadelphia 76ers.  That 76er team might have been one of the best in NBA history to never win a championship.  In 1983 the 76ers would defeat my Lakers to win the NBA finals, although it was just a few years difference this was not the same 76er team, Dr. J. was the only remaining player from that ‘77 team.  As for the 1977 team from Julius “Dr. J.” Erving to the last player off the bench this team was stacked.  They were high scoring in addition had a strong defensive presence, this 76er team was outstanding and had it all---all that is the exception of a championship.

The 76er starting lineup was Dr. J. at small forward, power forward George McGinnis; the center was Caldwell Jones backed up by Harvey Catchings (Tamika’s dad) and the late Darryl Dawkins.  Henry Bibby served as the point guard, ESPN’s Doug Collins was the shooting guard; reserves were Joe Bryant (Kobe’s dad) and Lloyd B. Free (later World B. Free).  The Blazers would defeat the outstanding 76er team four games to two.  One more unusual incident can you imagine the network failing to cover the trophy presentation?  That occurred in 1977, CBS didn’t have time because they made a commitment to cover the Kemper Open Golf Tournament.  They left coverage of the afternoon game to cover the golf tournament, think that would occur today?

This is what he said
Bulls guard Jimmy Butler was criticized by a number of fans and the media.  Butler stated his belief Coach Fred Hoiberg “wasn’t tough enough on guys.”  After a very bad game Mavs Coach Rick Carlisle pulled all his starters and replaced them with reserves.  In the post-game press conference he was questioned about his strategy.  “If it’s going to be like that, these guys won’t be Mavericks long.”  Was Carlisle serious in his comment we have no idea but you suppose Hoiberg might be listening?

Basketball from a fans perspective

Should have taken a blanket
Those in attendance at United Center last Friday believed they would be home before Saturday morning, its likely there were sleepy kids and maybe a few adults not driving on the way home after the game.  Three hours and 24 minutes later it wasn’t Saturday yet in the Central Time Zone however it was darn close.  Depending on driving distance some Bulls fans probably didn’t arrive at home until early Saturday morning.  Just in case you may have been unaware allow me to remind you the Bulls and Pistons faced off in a marathon game.

It took 4 overtimes to complete the game with the Pistons winning 147-144 which came close to the longest game in NBA history.  The game almost didn’t end in the 4th overtime Bulls guard Jimmy Butler missed a shot just as the buzzer went off.  The Bulls Butler lead the way with 43 points, Derrick Rose scored 34 and Pau Gasol with 30 rounds out their top scorers.  Andre Drummond led the way for the Pistons with 33 followed by Reggie Jackson’s 31 and Marcus Morris with 20.  I just read the Bulls had a game against the Knicks on Saturday night and did not arrive in New York until 4:00 a.m.

Speaking of the Bulls
We’ve heard stories since the beginning of time; “Coach _____ is too tough on us.”  We heard that applied to the Bulls over the last few years and their former Coach Tom Thibodeau.  Winning season’s aside Bulls management decided to make a coaching change after last season and they fired Thibodeau.   On the other hand Bulls management may have listened to player complaints about “Tough Tom“ practices and Derrick Rose playing too many minutes.  In some media circles Thibodeau was the blame for the continuing injuries with Rose and others.  Exit Tom Thibodeau enter Fred Hoiberg as coach then over the weekend came this news.  Guard Jimmy Butler goes on record and this is paraphrasing his statement; “Coach (Hoiberg) needs to be tougher on guys.”  Reminds me of the old quote; “Damn if you do; Damn if you don't."

Does this make sense?
Have you heard about this rumored trade, the Heat is reported to consider trading Hassan Whiteside for the Rockets Dwight Howard?  If this trade were to occur it makes no sense on several levels but consider this fact Whiteside will become a free-agent in July 2016.  The Heat believe they will be unable to re-sign him and rather than lose him with no compensation they trade him.  As for Howard you already know his story and I am not going to repeat it.  Consider this fact Whiteside has progressed as a player over the last two years and continues to improve.

Howard peaked awhile back and it’s likely he’s not going to get any better---what you see is what you get.  Whiteside is 26 years old (27 in June), Howard just turned 30.  Whiteside is relatively healthy while Howard is coming off an injury plagued season.  Offensively I give a slight edge to Whiteside, rebounding by a small margin to Howard.  As for blocked shots Whiteside is clearly the leader in this category.  For the portion we cannot measure (maturity) Whiteside is the apparent winner and the overall winner in several key categories.  As mentioned you see the dilemma facing the Heat they feel trapped afraid to lose a talent to free agency.

He’s not the we’ve been advised
Over the years I’ve read a number of stories indicating Michael Jordan is a frugal person.  One of the accounts indicated “He’d (Jordan) would rather spend your money than his. “  I had no method to determine if the story was true or false.  In this instance we know the truth or at least the reported truth.  Do you remember the lawsuit Michael Jordan filed against a Chicago area department chain?

The store had used his likeness in a series of commercials the only problem they appeared to make no effort to contact him.  The suit went to trial and the jury sided with Jordan the court would award him $8.9 million dollars.  After the judgment was rendered Jordan stated he “intends to sign the check over to 23 area charities he believes have benefited Chicago area residents.”

No super teams
The number of upsets in college basketball this season is unbelievable.  Over the weekend (4) Kentucky was beaten by Ohio State while Northern Iowa slipped past (5) Iowa State in addition number 7 Duke was upset by Utah.  I guess it might be a little difficult to call this an upset (24) Texas A&M beat (16) Baylor.  It’s difficult to refer to the (17) Butler Bulldogs over the (9) Purdue Boilermakers.  There have been a number of similar games since the beginning of the college season.  The point I’m attempting to infer despite the post-season success of Duke, Kentucky and others there are no college super teams.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Alarming L. A. basketball
We know my Lakers are bad it’s the other team the Clippers.  It wasn’t surprising the Clippers were beaten by the Spurs, after all the Spurs continue to be one of the best teams in the NBA.  Saturday’s results caught me completely off guard because I was pre-occupied with other activities.  I was shocked, yes shocked when I read the box score Rockets 107 Clippers 97.

The Rockets managed to win over my Lakers but haven’t beaten too many other teams lately.  The Rockets win over the Clippers squared their record at 14-14.  As for the Clippers many predicted they would emerge as Western Conference Champions in 2016.  The loss against the Rockets left them with a 16-12 record 6-7 on the road.  If the season ended today the Clippers would make the playoffs but at some point they must begin to play better.

Signed, Sealed, (partly) Delivered
Mizzou commits for 2016 signed on the dotted line last Wednesday.  6-6 Willie Jackson, 6-9 Reed Nikko and 6-10 Mitchell Smith all signed letters of intent; the three are Rivals 3-star prospects.  Nikko and Smith need to hit the weight room both are skinny based on their height.

See--it’s not just me
The reported news of Dwight Howard and his discontent broke I waited.  I waited for members of the media to formulate their opinion mine was made up at the time he left my Lakers.  Stephen A. Smith of ESPN’s First Take defended Howard which came as no surprise to any of us.  In the discussion Smith said; “Dwight called me as he was preparing to leave the Lakers.”  Former coach and current ESPN analyst Seth Greenberg said; “Why is any one shocked about Dwight Howard.  The guy is not a winning player.  A player that makes others better.  It’s always someone else!”  Remember the feud between Howard and Shaq both claiming the Superman label.  Veteran sportswriter Woody Paige might have had the best comment; “Dwight Howard is not Superman he’s Clark Kent.”

I’m not smart enough to get inside the head of Howard but consider this.  Howard had problems in Orlando with Coach Stan Van Gundy he’s outta there forcing a trade which would become the Lakers.  After a year free agent Howard left Los Angeles indicating there were “problems” with Kobe he’s out once again.  His cross country journey finds him landing in Houston and it‘s now nearly three years later.  “Houston we have a problem” were the words of Apollo 13 astronauts and the unconfirmed words of Dwight Howard.  It’s reported Howard appears to have issues with teammate James Hardin.  Keep in mind I never said Howard wasn’t talented but as I stated previously he appears to have maturity issues.  Howard’s probably not going to improve portions of his physical game he does have time to improve his mental approach to the game.

Undefeated
As this is written the SMU Mustangs are undefeated, they stand 9-0.  Don’t expect to see Larry Brown’s team in post-season play.  Currently they are number 18 in the AP Top 25 poll however the coach has just returned from NCAA mandated suspension.  The coach has served his suspension but the NCAA is not finished with the Mustangs yet.  They are prohibited from any post-season play which also includes the NIT Tournament.  Can SMU win the American Athletic Conference this season?  Everyone in the media is not in agreement however it appears the majority I've read believe the Mustangs are the best team in the conference despite probation.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Why
The public was aware Wisconsin’s Bo Ryan intended to retire at the end of the season; we guessed that would be either March or April 2016.  I believe we all were surprised when it was announced Ryan was retiring before the calendar flipped over to 2016.  As this is written I’ve read nothing on why he retired early.  I have listened to ESPN’s Mike Greenberg’s assessment of the story.  Before ripping Ryan the host claimed as far as he knows he hopes there is no health concern that caused the retirement.

Greenberg on his morning radio show; “Manipulating the system to make assistant Greg Wisconsin’s next coach.  It’s not his (Ryan) job to stack the deck so his guy can become the next coach.” A number of issues exist the public has a say-so this I believe is not one of them.  Greenberg is insisting (health concerns aside) Ryan fails to be a man of integrity.  That’s a strong statement by Mr. Greenberg.

How distinctive
I’m unsure when I first heard the name Dr. James A. Naismith.  Unlike other sports the game we love basketball was made-up by Naismith.  I can’t speak for soccer (football) but others football, baseball and hockey all came into being after being derived from another sports.  Basketball was invented due to a need; the cold New England winters had not allowed Dr. Naismith’s YMCA class outdoors to properly exercise.

Dr. Naismith had two peach baskets attached on opposite ends of the gym.  I don’t remember seeing any film of Naismith in the past and never heard his voice until this week.  A professor at the University of Kansa uncovered a 1939 radio interview in the archives which featured an interview with Naismith.  Dr. Naismith was asked about that very first 1891 game in Springfield (MA), it was interesting listening to his description of the game as he envisioned it and how he was forced to refine portions of it in order to avoid injuries to the players.

I doubt this
Despite his troubles (under NCAA mandated suspension) I love me some Larry Brown.  Over the course of his long coaching career the 75-year old Brown has had a number of coaching stops the vast majority produced winning teams.  One of those stops was in Philadelphia and coaching Allen Iverson.  With Iverson in a leadership role the 76ers played into the NBA Championship in 2001 although they lost to the Lakers 4-1.  Brown coaching Southern Methodist University has seen the 76ers from a distance the last several years. As I mentioned Brown’s had a number of coaching stops on his resume however it appears Philadelphia might be one of his favorites.

John Marks of Sheridan Hoops interviewed him and Brown expressed his concerns about the present state of the 76ers.  Bottom line Brown claims; “I could straighten it out (76ers) in five minutes.”  I informed you at the beginning Brown has been and continues to be one of my favorite coaches.  Given time I believe the coach could make a difference after all he’s a teaching coach.  Brown is one of those guys who love teaching the game as much as coaching.  Despite my admiration I find it difficult to believe it would take five minutes to “fix” the 76ers.  In addition to this account there are also reports indicating the 76ers are exploring a Mike D’Antoni hire as associate head coach, this one is a head scratcher.

Bits n Pieces
While conducting research I came across a name from the past Tom Chambers.  A number of you might be unfamiliar with Chambers; he arrived in the NBA in 1981 with the San Diego Clippers.  Chambers spent his most productive years with the Sonics and Suns.  I checked the NBA scoring list and believe Chambers might be the only 20,000 point scorer not in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.  It’s not just scoring, he was a 4X NBA All-Star and NBA All-Star MVP (1987).  I’m curious why his name has never come up in conversation when discussing nominees for the Hall of Fame.

The ESPN NBA page ran a story titled “5 on 5 would you pick Curry to start a team?”  It reminded me of a by-gone era in the playgrounds of America.  I’m unsure if it occurs much today but a group would gather in a city park or school playground and chose sides to form a team.  Usually the last guy chosen was one who probably appeared as though he couldn’t play would be the last one picked.  The games would end and sometimes a competitor would become a teammate if someone else arrived and someone left.

This is an interesting early assessment on LSU’s Ben Simmons.  Scouts are claiming they are unsure what position the 6-10 240 pound athlete is best suited to play.  I don’t believe they are projecting him as a point guard but I guess they judge he could be a two guard, small or power forward.  Early on LSU basketball has become “must-see” basketball strictly due to Simmons.   Should the 76ers win the lottery again the pick should be awarded to a team other than Philly.  Just sayin’, I’d hate for another talent to be awarded Philadelphia.

Basketball from a fans perspective

“Records are made to be broken”
Several of you might not be familiar with the age old statement in addition I’m not sure where I first heard it or who might have coined the phrase.  A number of records in all sports have been eclipsed although there are others who might never be shattered.  A couple of examples might be Wilt Chamberlain’s single game scoring record of 100 points and Cal Ripken’s 2.131 consecutive baseball games played.  I believed it was my personal mission to inform readers the correct NBA win streak.  The media seemed to be focused on attaching the Warriors four consecutive wins to this year’s total which is bogus.  Practically every headline I read stated; “28 game winning streak” which was not correct.

Maybe it was just my imagination but I believed the Warriors might be given credit for “breaking” the record should they exceed 33 games.  Every consecutive NBA winning streak I was able to locate detailed wins in a single-season not parts of two as the case with the Warriors.  How soon we forget, the LeBron Heat had a 27 game winning streak accomplished in the same season the Warriors finish in third place with 24 games.  As usual I hope this doesn’t appear to be a hater driven account winning 24 or 28 games in a row is no small feat, congratulations to the Warriors.

Change
The Naismith Hall of Fame is making a change in the voting process.  Players had to wait until they were retired 5 years, technically it would be 6 years before they possibly be elected.  The time is only reduced by one year to 4 years for election however it was pointed out the Class of 2016 could be quite classy.  Among the nominees who might gain admittance a year early could be Yao Ming, Shaquille O’Neal, Rasheed Wallace and Allen Iverson to name a few.  There are others to consider Tom Chambers and Robert Horry who might be considered.

Pre-occupied with height
Often the focus of Words eye view has been on the giants of the game.  The game of basketball is ruled by Big Men so its natural most of the accounts would focus on them.  This emphasis often fails to take into account basketball has a number of “little men” who play the game quite well.  James Daniels III is a junior at Howard University in Washington D.C.

The 5-11 Daniels is leading the nation in scoring with a 29.4 per game clip.  Next up is Kahlil Felder a 5-9 junior at Oakland University which is located about 40 miles from downtown Detroit (MI).  Felder is scoring 24.6 ppg and leads the nation in assists per game (8.9).  Don’t expect them to be in an NBA jersey seeing as; “Big men must prove they can’t play; little men must prove they can play.”

As this is written
Much has been written and discussed regarding LeBron James so far.  Not much about the Cavs who stand 15-7 and lead the Central Division.  The Bulls have played up and down so far, the Pacers certainly are better (Paul George) than last season.  Bringing up the rear are the Bucks at 10-15 who were expected to compete.  Who wins the Central---I’m still picking the Cavs at this point for a couple of reasons.  Number one Kyrie Irving is yet to set foot on the court, should he be fully prepared to play that’s a plus.  Iman Shumpert who I believe is a defensive specialist has missed a number of games due to injury.  As for the J.R. Smith factor he’s still J.R.  Kevin Love appears to have found his way in Cleveland.  Love now is comfortable a factor a number of us questioned last season.  Finally we conclude with LeBron who is still LeBron and the key reason I believe the Cavs will emerge as Central Division Champs again.  Check back with me in April on this one.

Sound familiar?
Dwight Howard is unhappy again, does this story sound familiar from the past?  Sheridan Hoops is reporting “The center is not pleased with his role in Houston. He’s unhappy playing second fiddle to James Haden. The Rockets are considering a trade since he will become a free agent next season” This is all speculation on my part however as I’ve often stated I can speculate with the best of ‘em.  Wasn’t Harden established in Houston before Howard arrived three years ago from the Lakers?  Did Howard fail to realize this was Harden’s team and he would be an add on piece?

Was Howard was so anxious to escape the Lakers he was willing to sign for less money with the Rockets?  This requires further explanation, the Lakers could play him a larger sum since he was their player.  Texas has no State income tax so its possible Howard may have still benefited due to the tax issue.  Dwight Howard is a talented player but it seems he’s got a maturity issue, he’s 30-years old now on the downhill side of his NBA career.  Howard never reached the level many expected he's still that 18-year old youngster who arrived in the NBA directly out of high school, he's aged in numbers but has never really grown up.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Can you believe?
The Bucks have done it again; they have closed the door on the two longest winning streaks in NBA history.  The first time they accomplished the feat was 1972 the Kareem Abdul Jabbar Bucks stopped the 33-game win streak of the Lakers.  Last Saturday night the Warriors had a 28-game winning streak (over two seasons) stopped at the Bradley Center. The Bucks manage to pin a 108-95 loss on the Warriors their first loss of the season.  It was pointed out Milwaukee has stopped winning streaks of 12 or more times four other times, “Fear the Deer”

Obituaries
Two more deaths that affect the basketball community.  Dolph Schayes 12-time NBA All-Pro died at 87, Schayes spent most of his career as a member of the Syracuse (NY) Nationals.  The Nationals would later move to Philadelphia and become the 76ers.  6-11 John “Hot Rod” Williams played a valued role for the Cavs as the sixth man during his nine years with the team.  “Perhaps Williams finest season occurred in 1989 when he averaged 16.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.04 block shots while mostly serving as the teams sixth man.”  He would go on to play for the Suns and Mavs before closing out a 13-year NBA career in 1999, Williams was 53.

I don’t know what to expect
At this stage I’m not sure but I believe the players who left Mizzou were Frank Haith recruits.  That’s okay they may have felt they didn’t fit Kim Anderson’s system.  As for the remaining roster and newcomers I don’t know what to expect.  If we check the roster they have only one senior and that spells trouble with a capital T.  Mizzou is a mix of junior college transfers, freshman, sophomores and juniors.

Mizzou fans must be patient I believe Kim Anderson can coach it’s a matter of recruiting, assembling the talent on hand and competing.  Unfortunately it looks as though 2015-16 is a “throw-away” year.  They will play however they will lose more games than they win. My hope is an improvement over the 9-23 mark last season the worst in the school’s history.  I believe with these commits there are no more offers available for 2016-17 baring any changes in the present roster.

Willie Jackson 6-6 215 pounds 3-star Rivals Cleveland Ohio
Reed Nikko 6-9 215 pounds 3-star Maple Grove MN
Mitchell Smith 6-10 195 pounds 3-star Van Buren AK

Tell me the truth
I’m reluctant to add this name to my list of broadcasters on my censure list.  He’s an athlete having played for Oklahoma State and several Euro teams.  Once his playing career was over he made the transition into radio-television and for awhile I enjoyed his insight especially as it related to basketball.  Doug Gottlieb CBS Sports is added to my list not because of baseball but an incredibly stupid comment regarding the recent World Series match featuring the Mets and Royals.

As for Brian Costa Wall Street Journal he too is added due to baseball.  Last season he referred to Royals Manager Ned Yost as an idiot.  Well that idiot Yost has managed to lead the Royals into two consecutive World Series a rare feat in this day and age, the second trip resulted in a championship.  I must repeat again I believe a number of these “journalist” write and make statements to rile up guys like me.  They certainly can’t believe some of the stuff they spew out or do they?

The Barber Shop
I can always expect sharp talk at the barber shop; it could be college or NBA ball.  Other sports are often discussed but it seems (at least when I visit) basketball dominates the conversation.  One barber in particular is always good for an opinion.  After discussing Chieck Diallo’s first game he turned to the NBA and the 76ers.  “It’s a shame what‘s going on with that team, they just continue to draft players.  No wonder (Jahlil) Okafor got in trouble the boy is tired of losing.  He won in high school won in college the constant losing has gotten to him.”  He figured he direct a portion of his critique at me; “Your Lakers should have drafted Okafor rather than Russell its still a Big Mans game.”  He finally concluded by stating; “Regardless of their record the 76ers should be excluded from the draft.”

Despite the rant of John there is no way the 76ers can be excluded from the draft I believe NBA rules would prohibit that event from occurring?  The NBA stepped in to run the New Orleans franchise while the team was on the market, this is not exactly the same situation but close.  This might be difficult with the 76er ownership remaining in place. As for his comment about my Lakers I guess I must learn to live with Russell over Okafor. Despite the 76ers victory over my team it might be quite awhile before good basketball returns to the City of Brotherly Love.  All I can say is they should be prohibited from drafting Ben Simmons.  Maybe the hiring of Jerry Colangelo to a position with this team will address the issues GM Sam Henke has perhaps ignored.  Ownership must listen to Colangelo ideas if not this hire serves no purpose.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Shocking
It’s unbelievable for me to be writing this narrative; I've watched enough highlights or a few games to determine it is time for Kobe Bryant to retire. There is no requirement for him to wait until April Kobe should set a December date. If you pay any attention to box scores you notice he’s leading the Lakers in shots taken not shots made. If this was the Kobe of 5 or 6 years ago I would have no problem with him leading the team in shot attempts. As you are aware he’s shooting a poor 30% from the floor and is not playing the “decoy” many of us expected.

You might ask “who takes the Kobe shots? “ I have no answer but regardless Kobe’s not making baskets anyway why not Randle, Clarkson or somebody else taking the bulk of the shots. I believe all Laker fans didn’t expect a 25 or 30 year old Kobe to return however they expected more production than what has been evident to date. As I was finishing this narrative Byron Scott announced he was changing the starting lineup. Randle and Russell to the bench replaced by Nance and Williams no word on the status of Kobe. We must guess Kobe remains in the starting lineup, hey coach what about the reduced minutes you once stated would be imposed on Kobe?

Part Deux
After completing the story on the Chicago Stags I decided to conduct further research on defunct NBA teams. Much to my surprise I discovered our cross-state city St. Louis (MO) had an NBA team prior to the 1955 arrival of the Hawks. If you remember the Hawks arrived that year after leaving Milwaukee, they would remain in St. Louis before moving to Atlanta in 1968 where they remain to date. The St. Louis Bombers came into existence in 1946 as an original member of the Basketball Association of America. Of course you remember from your earlier reading the league merged with the National Basketball League in 1948 to become the NBA of today, the Bombers folded in 1950 along with four other teams.

A Giant game
We sometimes say the game of basketball is often between giants. For the most part the participants are much taller than the average male; in a recent match we really had giants facing one another. 7-6 Mamadou Ndiaye UC-Irvine was matched against 7-6 Tacko Fall University of Central Florida. There have been players taller than either Ndiaye or Fall but there might be doubts if two players of this stature ever faced one another. UC-Irvine won the match 61-60 although neither participant played a factor in the outcome. Ndiaye scored 5 points in his teams’ victory while Fall contributed 6 points in a losing effort.

Hope this helps
The swift start by the Warriors this season has caused us to look to the past for great teams. The Bulls and Lakers have the top two all-time regular season wins and the Celtics line up behind them in the NBA history books. The game has changed so its just as impossible to compare these teams with the Warriors of today just thought it might be of interest to compare the lineups then versus now. I’ve mentioned previously I have no problems with records eclipsed except in one instance; the winning streak by the Heat (27) and Lakers (33) was accomplished during the regular season not parts of two seasons.

‘71-’72 Lakers 69 wins 13 losses
Wilt Chamberlain - center
Jim McMillan - small forward
‘Happy” Hairston - power forward
Jerry West - guard
Gail Goodrich - guard

‘95-‘96 Bulls 72 wins 10 losses
Michael Jordan - shooting guard
Ron Harper - point guard
Scottie Pippen - small forward

Dennis Rodman - power forward
Luc Longley/Bill Weddington - center
Toni Kukoc was a part-time starter in ‘95-’96.

‘96-’97 Bulls 69 wins 13 losses
Michael Jordan - shooting guard
Ron Harper - point guard

Scottie Pippen - small forward
Dennis Rodman - power forward
Luc Longley/Bill Weddington - center
Toni Kukoc was a part-time starter in ‘96-’97

The “War”
Was it a true war in a sense of the word might be the question; I speak of the NBA-ABA bidding for players that existed. It’s my belief the “war” may have only existed between franchise owners. There may have been bad blood between some players and teams but that might have been lessening once they began playing one another. The ABA began play in 1967 and it’s likely for the first five years or so play was superior in the NBA. Beginning at some point in the early ‘70’s play began to become equal in both leagues. Keep in mind the NBA-ABA merger didn’t occur until the 1976-77 season but the leagues begin exhibition play in 1971. These exhibition games served a two-fold purpose, they enhanced play in the young league and they allowed the public to see the ABA as a “Major League.”

The television footprint was nothing like it is now there was no ESPN, TNT or NBA TV. The NBA national telecasts were seen at various times on the ABC, CBS or NBC Networks. The ABA had local contracts but were practically invisible nationwide except for the ABA All Star Game. All during the time period the exhibition games were being played talks between the owners were being conducted, in June 1976 the two leagues agreed to a merger. The Spurs, Nuggets, Nets and Pacers were absorbed into the NBA; the Spirits of St Louis, Kentucky Colonels and Virginia Squires franchises were dissolved. Players from the dissolved franchises were placed in a pool and a dispersal draft was held by NBA teams.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Does he have an NBA future?
The Anteaters of the University of California Irvine have a distinctive basketball player. His name Mamadou Ndiaye (mama doo--Inji) and he stands 7 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 300 pounds. He is the tallest NCAA player in the nation at present, the young man hails from the West African nation of Senegal. His numbers are really not impressive however he only began playing basketball less than 5 years ago.

Ndiaye is entering his junior year and is certainly no threat to leave for the NBA. Although his game has grown he’s not as skilled as others the question might be would an NBA team is willing to take a chance on him? It’s possible he could fill a niche as a backup or spot starter for an NBA team. On the other hand he might find employment in Europe or in the D-League.

Retired numbers

The Pistons will retire two numbers from their last NBA Championship team. 2004 was the year guard Chauncey Billups (1) and center Ben Wallace (3) were keys to the last Pistons championship, a ceremony will be held later in the season retiring the numbers. Current players Reggie Jackson and Stanley Johnson must choose new numbers as Jackson currently wears number 1 and Johnson number 3.

Its football
Anytime Auburn is mentioned in conversation even the casual sports fan first thinks football. That should not be uncommon since the university boosts one of the best football programs of all-time. As for basketball that might be a slightly different matter.  It’s not the fact the school has not competed it just seems students, alum and fans reflect the adage once expressed by the University of Texas.

There are two sports at Auburn fall football and spring football. I checked the coaching history, I didn’t realize prior to the Bruce Peal hire the last five Auburn basketball coaches have all been fired. Bruce Pearl might be “swimming with the sharks” in his second year at the helm. Does the Pearl hiring signal a change in the schools basketball fortunes? I think many hope that is the case.

Bits n Pieces
It’s always been my belief a person has allegiance to one sport faithfully or the other. I never believed collegiate basketball was competing with its football program. This isn’t 1953 the date Bear Bryant left Kentucky for Texas A&M, it was reported he didn’t like playing second fiddle to Adolph Rupp and Kentucky basketball. We know the rest of the story Bryant became a living legend later with Alabama football.

You might remember I wrote NBA League Pass has changed its subscription policy. The buyer can now subscribe to NBA Team Pass or NBA Single Game. Team Pass allows the buyer to see all games of his favorite team except those on TNT, ESPN or NBA TV. Blackout rules apply which might impact your decision. Single Game is self explanatory, no last minute purchases you must give three (3) days advance notice.

Wanna know Kobe Bryant’s age? Of course you know if it’s not in your memory a quick Google or ESPN search will provide the information. ESPN pointed to the fact Heat forward Justise Winslow was excited about his match up against Kobe. The network wrote “Winslow was seven months old when Kobe made his NBA debut in 1996“.

The Stags?
I believed (in error) only two NBA teams had Chicago across their road jerseys. I’d written about the expansion Packers who began play in the 1961-62 season. The following season they became the Zephyrs and left for Baltimore after the 1963 season. They became the Bullets, then the Capital Bullets and later the Washington Bullets. Former owner Abe Pollin concern about gun violence and bullets decided to change the name. A contest was held to change the name and in 1997 the Bullets became the Wizards.

Back to our original account regarding Chicago, the Stags were founded in 1946 as a Basketball Association of American team. In 1949 BAA teams would merge with the NBL thus becoming the National Basketball Association. The Stags held the draft rights to Bob Cousy although he never played for them. The franchise would fold in 1950 and Cousy along with others was placed in a pool to be drafted by other NBA teams. Cousy was selected by the Celtics and the rest of that story in NBA and Celtic history. It should be noted the Bulls have worn throw-back jerseys of the Stags on three occasions.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Bits n Pieces
Mama Deborah was not showing any favoritism when she attended the Knicks-Nets game.  See son Robin Lopez plays center for the Knicks while twin brother Brook is the center for the Nets.  Mama’s attire for the game a Knicks jersey topped off by a Nets beanie on her head, no mention which bench she sat behind.

As for the game itself Big Shot Chauncey Billups was in the ESPN studio with Sage Steele. Questioned by Steele he said; “We knew last year this guy (Kristaps Porzingis) was going to be a good NBA player after seeing him play last summer against pros.”  If Billups had this information from the summer I wonder why Stephen A. Smith didn’t with the NBA connections he claims.

Steph Curry might own the world but Davidson is certainly the exception.  The school was questioned recently about retiring his jersey; if you remember he left school after his junior year.  Davidson as with a number of other institutions does not retire jerseys until a diploma is earned.

Phi Slam Jama
Guy Lewis coached at the University of Houston for 30 years; this long-time coach died recently at age 93.  Lewis preferred an up tempo game at a time many were playing a more traditional and methodical game.  His Cougar teams in addition to sprinting up and down the court were a testimony to the slam dunk hence the nickname Phi Slam Jama by his Drexler, Olajuwon team.  Lewis was the coach for three Hall of Fame players; Clyde Drexler, Hakeem Olajuwon and Elvin Hayes.

Lewis himself was inducted in the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2013.  His Houston Cougar teams won 592 games while only losing 279; he was 2X AP Coach of the Year and one time UPI Coach of the Year.  Lewis was among the first number of coaches in the southwest and southeast to recruit black players, his success on the court led to other schools to follow suit.  R.I.P. Guy Lewis a giant in the sport of basketball and life.

Compared to whom?
In the past I’ve mentioned the tendency to compare a potentially talented youngster to an established NBA star.  I believe it’s often unfair because it places undue pressure on the younger player.  We use it because it’s one of the few methods available to aid us to gauge the ability of the athlete, we compare them to someone we are familiar with.  I try to refrain from this practice but even I have been guilty in the past.  This time it’s not me its Yahoo Sports and Marc Spears.  Spears wrote an account titled “Next LeBron James? Ben Simmons looks ready to grow into the role.”  I enjoy reading Spears so I hope this doesn’t appear critical of him or his writing style.

I may have missed this one
I’m unsure about you but I rarely hear members of the media admit errors.  I’m not a paid member of the media but have no problem admitting if I’m proven wrong.  Last season after the Mavs released Rajon Rondo I stated I didn’t want him on the Lakers.  My belief was based on problems between him and Mavs management.  After the Mavs released him he signed a one year contract with the Kings, okay this is the end I believed.  Well at least through early December Rondo’s proved me wrong, he’s leading the NBA in assists at 11.0 per game and scoring 12 points a game.  The 6-1 Rondo is snatching down nearly 7 and a half rebounds a game.  The Kings won-loss record is below .500 however Rondo’s effort has been exemplary.

Okay I’m a hater too
My hatred might be different because mine is for Los Angeles, not that team the other one----- the Clippers. It began several seasons back with ESPN and others titling the team “Lob City. “  This was a reference to Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan and others being high flying dunk artist.  All the dunks in the world didn’t help when the team shortcomings were exposed in the playoffs.  It continued with the arrival of Doc Rivers as coach, how long had the Laker jerseys remained visible in Staples?  My guess was at least 10 years; the first thing Rivers he does is cover have the jerseys covered when the Clippers are the home team.  It seems every season the Clippers are expected to advance out of the Western Conference but they have a problem----they don’t do it.  They fail to each year to advance despite roster additions aside they don’t know how to win in the playoffs.

After running rough-shod over NBA competition during the regular season the warts of the Clippers become exposed in the playoffs.  Back to the coach a moment, he makes comments to the press and then when questioned on the meaning retreats.  Rivers statement earlier this year about it being beneficial to the Warriors not facing the Clippers last season in the playoffs.  He forgot his team was a loser after holding a 3 games to 1 lead against the Rockets and losing the series.  When questioned about his comment; “That’s not what I meant.”  Well that’s what you said what is the public to believe Doc?  Finally there is Cliff Paul’s (State Farm Ins commercials) alter ego Chris Paul.  The talented Paul has never led the Clippers or the Hornets deep into the playoffs.  They (whoever they are) continue to pronounce him the best point guard in the NBA, that view is subject to debate.

Basketball from a fans perspective

It’s bothersome
There is no doubt in our minds that Ben Simmons and Cheick Diallo are headed to the NBA. As I’ve often stated I would prefer youngsters remain in school and gain an education (if that’s their desire). As for others why force them to commit to an education when their eyes are clearly on an NBA career. I haven’t followed LSU basketball but at this point the team has not played as well as expected, (4-3) unless the team improves is there any rational for him to remain in school?

LSU beat North Florida 119-108 and Simmons attended the game, his box score 43 points 14 rebounds 7 assists 5 steals and 3 blocked shots. Simmons shot 15-20 from the floor and in 37 minutes on the floor had only two turnovers. Diallo’s first game for Kansas was not as spectacular but none the less he impressed. After sitting out the first 5 games due to an eligibility issue all were anxious to see the results of his first collegiate game. 13 points 6 for 8 from the floor with six rebounds in 16 minutes. The 6-9 220 pound forward had a break away dunk as his Kansas Jayhawks beat Loyola (MD) 94-61.

Bam, bam and bam
The early signing period witnessed Coach Cal and Kentucky scoring a recruiting coup once again and all the committed are Rivals 5-star prospects. First it was De’Aaron Fox a 6-3 point from Katy Texas and then 6-9 power forward Bam Adebayo from High Point North Carolina. Finally Malik Monk a 6-4 shooting guard from Bentonville Arkansas added his name to the committed. All are verbal’s and they can change their minds before signing on the dotted line however that’s not likely to occur. If Calipari should leave Kentucky these recruits might change their minds otherwise they are likely headed to Lexington.

Interesting
If you live in the New York metro maybe you are aware of this news. Ian Begley ESPN Staff Writer posted a photo on ESPN’s NBA page. In the photo was President of Basketball Operations working with Kristaps Porzingis in practice according to Begley. The writer didn’t explain if this was the first instance for Jackson or the 30th time, one of the criticisms of Jackson is he’s been no coach. With the Bulls and later with the Lakers he held the position of head coach. In both instances Jackson led teams already assembled to multiple NBA Championships. Some of you are only familiar with Phil Jackson the coach you might be unaware Jackson had a 13-year playing career with the Knicks and Nets.

Crash and burn
The Wichita State Shockers have fallen to 2-4 in this early portion of the college season. Many in the media hint the Shockers have crashed and burned, they have stumbled out of the gate but much of the season remains. Gregg Marshall’s team was listed as Top 25 in every poll, what came to pass you ask? Probably the biggest single issue guard Fred VanVleet’s absence from the lineup, he is recovering from a hamstring injury.

VanVleet is the heart and soul of the Shockers; in addition Marshall has to integrate a number of new players into his system. The slow start is newsworthy for the simple fact when your school wins 30 games each of the last three seasons expectations are high. The less than .500 record is just a ripple right now, VanVleet returns and we see remnants of the past. This version might not be capable of winning 30 games but I believe in Gregg Marshall do you?

It’s not me this time
He stands 6-11 and weighs 260 pounds and he’s in high school. “Ukoka Azubuike is the closet thing to Shaq in HS Basketball” says Mixtape. Azubuike is a senior at the Potters House Christian Academy in Jacksonville (FL). Originally from Lagos Nigeria Azubuike joins the line of Big Men who continue from the African Continent. As for the Shaq comparison it’s them not me, check out video of him in action. Playing against high school competition and nearly seven feet tall can be a little misleading.

He’s often not matched against someone his size in addition we can guess he might be double and triple team at times. The list of schools with offers on the table total 13, among them Kentucky, Kansas, Florida and Georgetown to name just a few. He’s not a smooth shooter (kinda like Shaq) but rather depends on a power game. The rebounding will improve with coaching and training. Azubuike is not a good free-throw shooter another Shaq like trait.

Basketball from a fans perspective

For the haters
It’s being reported ticket sales have increased for the remaining Laker games. We can conclude fans will not be attending the game to see the Lakers especially in light of their poor play this season. They will attend the game to gain a last glimpse of Kobe Bryant on an NBA court; I wonder how the legions of Kobe haters will explain this series of events. There explanation; “He’s (Kobe) to demanding and sometimes demeaning to his teammates.”

Sound familiar well maybe but we could have made that very same statement about Michael Jeffrey Jordan. I don’t believe any of us have read an account of Kobe’s critical remarks causing a teammate to shed tears. When Michael Jordan was a member of the Wizards his demands on Kwame Brown’s play forced the 6-11 260 pound center to tears. As for Kobe he never became Michael Jordan but he might have come closer than any player of this generation with five NBA Championships 2X Finals MVP and other honors.

A good read
Joe Nocera Sports Business New York Times wrote an insightful piece on the mess that I can title the NCAA-Diallo fiasco. His story is titled; “NCAA Clears Players, then absolves itself.” It’s dated November 25 and is a detailed account of the NCAA farce.

To be fair
Matt Norlander wrote a column for CBS Sports titled; Top 100 (plus one) College Basketball Players for 2015-16. The author pointed out there are 4,500 division I players throughout the nation but he provided us those he believed are the top in the nation. I looked over the list but it got me to thinking and had a thought to share with you. We often use NBA success as a measurement of a player’s accomplishment. That’s unfair but we do it on the other end as well. Charles Barkley is a Top 50 all-time NBA player BUT---there is NO NBA Championship on his resume, is that fair? College success doesn’t always translate into professional basketball.

Its likely Jimmer Fredette’s NBA career is lover as he was unable to transfer his success at BYU into the NBA. How about sharpshooter Adam Morrison from Gonzaga? Morrison was the glue that held the Zags together but couldn’t sustain an NBA career. I can give you another name, how about Keydren Clark. Clark was a 5-11 point guard and played for St. Peter’s in New Jersey from 2002-2006. He scored 3,058 points and averaged 25.9 points per game for his college career. Un-drafted at age 31 he’s still playing just not in the NBA. There are others not mentioned next time you have one of those conversations about basketball success it doesn’t always result in an NBA career.

Its coming
“They” changed the landscape on us not quickly but dimly. The “They” are those network executives who changed and or continuing to transform sports television broadcasting. The day is fast approaching when there will be little if any sports on the major networks. Once upon a time we tuned into NBC, CBS or ABC if we wanted to view a game. CBS covered college basketball exclusively and the NBA rotated between NBC, CBS and ABC. Much later Fox Sports would begin telecasting and snatch a share of the market. Once ESPN went on the air in 1979 the movement from broadcast to cable and satellite began to accelerate. College basketball began an affiliation with ESPN and only connected with broadcast audiences on CBS Saturdays and during the NCAA Tournament. Fox Sports would arrive and take a little more of the college basketball broadcast and a portion of MLB.

In addition NBC and CBS now have sports networks only available by subscription. Once upon time the mention of “Pay-TV” sent folks into the streets screaming NO WAY am I paying for what I can receive over the airwaves.” Well soon unless you have cable or satellite that will be your only means to view sports. Another example; Monday Night Football a staple for the ABC Network moved to ESPN a number of years ago. The NBA and college basketball have also moved to Turner Network, ESPN, Fox Sports and other cable networks. In addition NBA League Pass, the NFL Network and MLB Network are in place too. Face it fans you got to pay for it if you want to see it. It’s here and real soon there might be no sports available on broadcast television.

Basketball from a fans perspective

The news broke Sunday evening as I was preparing the Monday edition of Words Eye View.  For the first time I'm running a special edition and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did writing it.  Time to say so long to a man there was no middle ground, half of the people I come in contact with hate him the other half love him, there is no middle ground.  Lets just say Kobe Bryant has made a name for himself in the NBA and basketball few will forget.

Changing of the guard
We have been witness to the changing of the guard in the NFL, Denver quarterback Peyton Manning is 39 years old and will turn 40 in March. Injuries and age have no longer allowed him to play at the level he once drove defensive coaches and opposing players crazy. Manning was replaced by 25-year old Brock Osweiler and its likely Osweiler will remain the starter for the balance of the season. My Lakers have been in a change mode as well, after missing parts of the last two seasons I (along with others) believed Kobe had one more “run” left in his 37-year old body. It’s been quite painful for us who are fans to see his effort on the court, the old sayin’ “The mind is willing but the body is weak” certainly applies. Jump shot after shot has clanked off the board in this young season, Kobe‘s shooting percentage is in the 30% range.

We all believed it would take time for Kobe to adjust to the rigors of the NBA once again.
The time came for his return and we discovered (along with him) his game has eroded.  I began to
believe its’ become difficult for the young Lakers to move ahead with him remaining on the roster, the youngsters are always looking over their shoulder. As for his past his work ethic caused problems with teammates Shaquille O’Neal and Dwight Howard. I believe he wanted the maximum effort from them which he possibly believed was not there at times. Was he correct in his approach toward them? Probably not but can we state with convection we got the max effort out of our co-workers without problems? Five NBA Championships, 2X NBA Finals MVP, 2008 NBA MVP, two Olympic Gold Medals, one FIBA American Gold Medal and 11X All-NBA First Team.

In addition he was a 9X All NBA Defensive First Team, 3X All NBA Defensive Second Team and 2X NBA Scoring Champion, the 81 point game against the Raptors I witnessed via NBA League Pass standout in my memory.  There are more honors this account attempts to capture several of the major events over the course of a brilliant NBA career.  I would be negligent if I failed to mention Colorado.  In 2003 Kobe was charged with sexual assault after a hotel employee accussed him of rape.  In 2004 the charges were dropped after the accuser refused to testify, a civil suit was later settled with her.  Although other athletes have been charged with the same offense since that time frame we don't hear any of them being referred as "the  rapist."  That's all in the past now as for Kobe Bean Bryant beyond retirement the next stop is the Naismith Hall of Fame in Springfield (MA).

Basketball from a fans perspective

Is the issue resolved?
The NCAA finally cleared Cheick Diallo to play for Kansas, this account is written on Wednesday November 25th. Kansas has a game scheduled against Vanderbilt tonight in the Maui Invitational, although Diallo was permitted to travel with the team he is not cleared to play in the game. The NCAA claimed Diallo has received improver benefits therefore he must sit out five games. He is eligible to play December 1 which didn’t sit well with Seth Greenfield former coach and ESPN analyst.

Greenberg said; “This is ridiculous, they allow him (Diallo) to travel but he must wait till December 1st to play.” The NCAA after dragging its feet for months on this issue says Diallo must wait 6 more days to play----figure out the logic in that decision if you care. Even more confusing is the convoluted explanation by the NCAA on the delay. A local sportscaster claims “The (NCAA) had gone back and looked at Diallo’s 6th grade transcript.“ The issue of gaining eligibility by the NCAA remains unsolved, it shouldn’t take 6 months to resolve the issue.

I missed this one too
Wednesday I mentioned missed the LSU-Marquette game which I intended to see. I missed the recent Clippers-Warriors game for a different reason; I was unable to tune in the game at the beginning. By the time I was able to turn to the game the Warriors were down by 20+ points, I figured why bother. Not a fan of either team but I wanted to see a competitive game and it appeared one of the teams was over-matched at least in this one. My observation proved totally incorrect; I went to bed guessing the SoCal team had stuck it to their NorCal neighbor. Imagine my surprise when I checked the score Friday morning, Warriors 127 Clippers 117.

International basketball
On several occasions I’ve written on the growth of basketball world-wide. This has translated to athletes from four corners of the world arriving on our shores to play at the college or NBA level. Over the last several years Gonzaga in Spokane (WA) has recruited internationally but this prospect might be a first. The school announced one of the prospects arriving next season is Rui Hachimuara from Japan. Hachimuara is listed at 6-7 and can he play at the D-1 level?

1. He played in the Jordan Brand Classic last April in the Barclays Center the only Japanese player invited.
2. If Gonzaga has seen enough to offer a scholarship that’s good enough proof for me.

3. There were other D-1 programs scouting Hachimuara. He might not be headed to the NBA but he’s certainly on his way to Spokane.

Falling temperatures
It’s in the 40’s in the nation’s heartland Kansas City temperatures in the upper Midwest and east coast have begun sliding downward. It certainly will become even colder in those portions of the country before the spring thaw. As for the college tournaments have you noted a number are in locations where the temperature is just a bit warmer. In the Puerto Rico Tip-Off it’s in the upper 70’s while in Hawaii the Maui Invitational the daytime temperature is also in the 70’s.

The Paradise Jam Tournament in the Virgin Islands the temperature is in the lower 80’s, Corpus Christ Texas the location of the Coastal Challenge it’s in the middle 70’s. The only frigid temperature might be the Great Alaska Shootout held in Anchorage Alaska where the temperature is 28 degrees. There are other pre-season tournaments I’ve failed to mention however you get the point I hope. Schools are headed for warmer climates to prepare their teams for tournament play. At the same time it provides players, coaches and family the opportunity to vacation in a warm climate.

Basketball from a fans perspective

I missed it
Try as I can there are just too many games for me (and maybe you) to see, I’m sure sorry I missed this one. LSU’s Ben Simmons had one of those games that have NBA scouts excited. Simmons line against Marquette read 21 points, 20 rebounds 7 assists 2 steals and only 3 turnovers in 40 minutes of action. Unfortunately Simmons needed a little more assistance as the Tigers came up one point short losing 81-80. Now we understand why scouts claim they are unsure what position the 6-10 240 pound Simmons will play in the NBA.

The other team Charles-----the other one!
Last week I noted Charles Barkley seems to constantly remind us the “turrible” state of the Lakers. Perhaps he is concentrating on the wrong Los Angeles team maybe he needs to dissect the co-tenants of the Staples Centers. After a loss on Sunday to the Raptors (91-80) yelling was later heard in the Clipper locker room. The season is still young we are not yet in December but. Sunday evening Vince Cellini of NBA TV reminded us a long ago Michael Ray Richardson quote. Many reading this might be too young to remember Richardson or the quote for that matter. .

Playing for the ’81-’82 Knicks Richardson was questioned about his teams poor play he made a statement which has become classic; “The ship be sinking.” The season is still young and one game below .500 (6-7 as this is written) is not awful but the expectations for this team is an NBA Championship. Lance Stephenson, Paul Pierce and Josh Smith added to the Clipper roster in the off season have all been starters with previous teams. Perhaps that’s part of the problem, there is an adjustment period required for this trio. Doc prove me wrong, can you coach this collection of souls?

Totally confusing
I’ve always believed a governing body is required for collegiate sports. Left to their own devices schools are tempted and continue to be tempted to cheat in some form or another. The only issue I’m not sure in the 21st Century if the NCAA is the institution to administrate judgment. The NCAA has proven time and time again they are out of step with many issues facing athletes of today. This is a re-visit of the issue regarding foreign nationals and the issue of eligibility.

The Kansas City Star printed a copy of the letter the University of Kansas wrote to the NCAA. The letter involved the eligibility issue that’s besieged Cheick Diallo. I have no copyright privilege so I cannot print it let’s just say it’s a “smoking gun” accusation on the NCAA. Coach Bill Self has “danced” around this issue preferring to take the high road. The gloves have come off as he dealt out a personal share of criticism of the NCAA. I could be off-base in my remarks on the other hand.

The NBA Draft
Drafting players has no scientific principles applied to it as far as I am aware. Teams scout prospects then the NBA Combine occurs.  Next up the prospects are invited for individual workouts, in addition teams send out inquiries regarding character and other issues.  It’s likely I’ve missed a step or two however you get the point. With all the checks in place Michael Olowokandi and Kwame Brown were still drafted number one, you say you don’t remember them? Olowokandi was made the 1st pick in the 1998 draft by the Clippers any by 2007 he was no longer in the league. He played for 4 NBA teams over that time and this 7 foot player left the association with career numbers of 8.3 ppg and 6.8 rebounds.

As for Brown he was the first pick in the 2001 draft by the Wizards and played for 7 NBA teams before leaving in 2013. Brown’s career numbers 6.6 ppg and 5.5 rebounds per game this despite the fact he stood 6-11 and weighed 270 pounds. There are other Big Men overlooked however I wanted to discuss these busts in relation to Kristaps Porzingis. The youngster has played but 15 games as this is written he’s yet to hit the “rookie wall” yet. Despite Stephen A. Smith’s ranting the day after the draft I believe the Knicks have drafted a gem in Porzingis. Interesting in that Smith has been rather quiet on his comments instead preferring to concentrate on the NFL,college football and LeBron James.
