Basketball from a fans perspective
The news broke Sunday evening as I was preparing the Monday edition of Words Eye View. For the first time I'm running a special edition and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did writing it. Time to say so long to a man there was no middle ground, half of the people I come in contact with hate him the other half love him, there is no middle ground. Lets just say Kobe Bryant has made a name for himself in the NBA and basketball few will forget.
Changing of the guard
We have been witness to the changing of the guard in the NFL, Denver quarterback Peyton Manning is 39 years old and will turn 40 in March. Injuries and age have no longer allowed him to play at the level he once drove defensive coaches and opposing players crazy. Manning was replaced by 25-year old Brock Osweiler and its likely Osweiler will remain the starter for the balance of the season. My Lakers have been in a change mode as well, after missing parts of the last two seasons I (along with others) believed Kobe had one more “run” left in his 37-year old body. It’s been quite painful for us who are fans to see his effort on the court, the old sayin’ “The mind is willing but the body is weak” certainly applies. Jump shot after shot has clanked off the board in this young season, Kobe‘s shooting percentage is in the 30% range.
We all believed it would take time for Kobe to adjust to the rigors of the NBA once again.
The time came for his return and we discovered (along with him) his game has eroded. I began to believe its’ become difficult for the young Lakers to move ahead with him remaining on the roster, the youngsters are always looking over their shoulder. As for his past his work ethic caused problems with teammates Shaquille O’Neal and Dwight Howard. I believe he wanted the maximum effort from them which he possibly believed was not there at times. Was he correct in his approach toward them? Probably not but can we state with convection we got the max effort out of our
co-workers without problems? Five NBA Championships, 2X NBA Finals MVP, 2008 NBA MVP, two Olympic Gold Medals, one FIBA American Gold Medal and 11X All-NBA First Team.
In addition he was a 9X All NBA Defensive First Team, 3X All NBA Defensive Second Team and 2X NBA Scoring Champion, the 81 point game against the Raptors I witnessed via NBA League Pass standout in my memory. There are more honors this account attempts to capture several of the major events over the course of a brilliant NBA career. I would be negligent if I failed to mention Colorado. In 2003 Kobe was charged with sexual assault after a hotel employee accussed him of rape. In 2004 the charges were dropped after the accuser refused to testify, a civil suit was later settled with her. Although other athletes have been charged with the same offense since that time frame we don't hear any of them being referred as "the rapist." That's all in the past now as for Kobe Bean Bryant beyond retirement the next stop is the Naismith Hall of Fame in Springfield (MA).

Basketball from a fans perspective
Is the issue resolved?
The NCAA finally cleared Cheick Diallo to play for Kansas, this account is written on Wednesday November 25th. Kansas has a game scheduled against Vanderbilt tonight in the Maui Invitational, although Diallo was permitted to travel with the team he is not cleared to play in the game. The NCAA claimed Diallo has received improver benefits therefore he must sit out five games. He is eligible to play December 1 which didn’t sit well with Seth Greenfield former coach and ESPN analyst.
Greenberg said; “This is ridiculous, they allow him (Diallo) to travel but he must wait till December 1st to play.” The NCAA after dragging its feet for months on this issue says Diallo must wait 6 more days to play----figure out the logic in that decision if you care. Even more confusing is the convoluted explanation by the NCAA on the delay. A local sportscaster claims “The (NCAA) had gone back and looked at Diallo’s 6th grade transcript.“ The issue of gaining eligibility by the NCAA remains unsolved, it shouldn’t take 6 months to resolve the issue.
I missed this one too
Wednesday I mentioned missed the LSU-Marquette game which I intended to see. I missed the recent Clippers-Warriors game for a different reason; I was unable to tune in the game at the beginning. By the time I was able to turn to the game the Warriors were down by 20+ points, I figured why bother. Not a fan of either team but I wanted to see a competitive game and it appeared one of the teams was over-matched at least in this one. My observation proved totally incorrect; I went to bed guessing the SoCal team had stuck it to their NorCal neighbor. Imagine my surprise when I checked the score Friday morning, Warriors 127 Clippers 117.
International basketball
On several occasions I’ve written on the growth of basketball world-wide. This has translated to athletes from four corners of the world arriving on our shores to play at the college or NBA level. Over the last several years Gonzaga in Spokane (WA) has recruited internationally but this prospect might be a first. The school announced one of the prospects arriving next season is Rui Hachimuara from Japan. Hachimuara is listed at 6-7 and can he play at the D-1 level?
1. He played in the Jordan Brand Classic last April in the Barclays Center the only Japanese player invited.
2. If Gonzaga has seen enough to offer a scholarship that’s good enough proof for me.
3. There were other D-1 programs scouting Hachimuara. He might not be headed to the NBA but he’s certainly on his way to Spokane.
Falling temperatures
It’s in the 40’s in the nation’s heartland Kansas City temperatures in the upper Midwest and east coast have begun sliding downward. It certainly will become even colder in those portions of the country before the spring thaw. As for the college tournaments have you noted a number are in locations where the temperature is just a bit warmer. In the Puerto Rico Tip-Off it’s in the upper 70’s while in Hawaii the Maui Invitational the daytime temperature is also in the 70’s.
The Paradise Jam Tournament in the Virgin Islands the temperature is in the lower 80’s, Corpus Christ Texas the location of the Coastal Challenge it’s in the middle 70’s. The only frigid temperature might be the Great Alaska Shootout held in Anchorage Alaska where the temperature is 28 degrees. There are other pre-season tournaments I’ve failed to mention however you get the point I hope. Schools are headed for warmer climates to prepare their teams for tournament play. At the same time it provides players, coaches and family the opportunity to vacation in a warm climate.

Basketball from a fans perspective
I missed it
Try as I can there are just too many games for me (and maybe you) to see, I’m sure sorry I missed this one. LSU’s Ben Simmons had one of those games that have NBA scouts excited. Simmons line against Marquette read 21 points, 20 rebounds 7 assists 2 steals and only 3 turnovers in 40 minutes of action. Unfortunately Simmons needed a little more assistance as the Tigers came up one point short losing 81-80. Now we understand why scouts claim they are unsure what position the 6-10 240 pound Simmons will play in the NBA.
The other team Charles-----the other one!
Last week I noted Charles Barkley seems to constantly remind us the “turrible” state of the Lakers. Perhaps he is concentrating on the wrong Los Angeles team maybe he needs to dissect the co-tenants of the Staples Centers. After a loss on Sunday to the Raptors (91-80) yelling was later heard in the Clipper locker room. The season is still young we are not yet in December but. Sunday evening Vince Cellini of NBA TV reminded us a long ago Michael Ray Richardson quote. Many reading this might be too young to remember Richardson or the quote for that matter. .
Playing for the ’81-’82 Knicks Richardson was questioned about his teams poor play he made a statement which has become classic; “The ship be sinking.” The season is still young and one game below .500 (6-7 as this is written) is not awful but the expectations for this team is an NBA Championship. Lance Stephenson, Paul Pierce and Josh Smith added to the Clipper roster in the off season have all been starters with previous teams. Perhaps that’s part of the problem, there is an adjustment period required for this trio. Doc prove me wrong, can you coach this collection of souls?
Totally confusing
I’ve always believed a governing body is required for collegiate sports. Left to their own devices schools are tempted and continue to be tempted to cheat in some form or another. The only issue I’m not sure in the 21st Century if the NCAA is the institution to administrate judgment. The NCAA has proven time and time again they are out of step with many issues facing athletes of today. This is a re-visit of the issue regarding foreign nationals and the issue of eligibility.
The Kansas City Star printed a copy of the letter the University of Kansas wrote to the NCAA. The letter involved the eligibility issue that’s besieged Cheick Diallo. I have no copyright privilege so I cannot print it let’s just say it’s a “smoking gun” accusation on the NCAA. Coach Bill Self has “danced” around this issue preferring to take the high road. The gloves have come off as he dealt out a personal share of criticism of the NCAA. I could be off-base in my remarks on the other hand.
The NBA Draft
Drafting players has no scientific principles applied to it as far as I am aware. Teams scout prospects then the NBA Combine occurs. Next up the prospects are invited for individual workouts, in addition teams send out inquiries regarding character and other issues. It’s likely I’ve missed a step or two however you get the point. With all the checks in place Michael Olowokandi and Kwame Brown were still drafted number one, you say you don’t remember them? Olowokandi was made the 1st pick in the 1998 draft by the Clippers any by 2007 he was no longer in the league. He played for 4 NBA teams over that time and this 7 foot player left the association with career numbers of 8.3 ppg and 6.8 rebounds.
As for Brown he was the first pick in the 2001 draft by the Wizards and played for 7 NBA teams before leaving in 2013. Brown’s career numbers 6.6 ppg and 5.5 rebounds per game this despite the fact he stood 6-11 and weighed 270 pounds. There are other Big Men overlooked however I wanted to discuss these busts in relation to Kristaps Porzingis. The youngster has played but 15 games as this is written he’s yet to hit the “rookie wall” yet. Despite Stephen A. Smith’s ranting the day after the draft I believe the Knicks have drafted a gem in Porzingis. Interesting in that Smith has been rather quiet on his comments instead preferring to concentrate on the NFL,college football and LeBron James.

Basketball from a fans perspective
I’m still unsure
Believe it or not Stephen A. Smith made a statement I slightly agree with. In discussing the Clippers and Doc Rivers he acknowledged; “I have no problems with Doc Rivers the coach it’s Doc Rivers the general manager I have a problem.” Despite my partial agreement with Smith I do have issues with Rivers the coach but I’ll leave that for another time and another discussion. I’ve written several accounts in which I voiced the belief Doc Rivers “saved” his son’s NBA career. Austin Rivers was likely headed to the D-League or Europe until his daddy swung a trade acquiring his services.
Young Rivers can play basketball he proved that his one year at Duke, the question in my mind and others is his ability to play at the NBA level. It’s not just adding young Rivers to the roster its also adding Lance Stephenson, Paul Pierce and Josh Smith. The three are all NBA veterans but can they mesh as a unit? Doc Rivers the coach must mold this collection into a cohesive unit. Those are just a few of the off-season moves as general manager that we might be deemed questionable. You say we are nowhere near the middle portion of the season check back with me in April you say. Okay I’ll do that and if I’m wrong about this account I’ll admit it.
“Stand by Your Man”
In 1968 Country and Western artist Tammy Wynette released a single titled “Stand by Your Man.” The middle portion of the songs lyrics are; “And if you love him, oh be proud of him 'Cause after all he's just a man. Stand by your man; give him two arms to cling to and something warm to come to when nights are cold and lonely. Stand by your man, and show the world you love him. The lyrics are strictly ‘70’s so they are dated for the 21st Century but I hope you get the theme.
Lynn McHale wife of Kevin McHale took to twitter to stick up for her husband on his termination by the Rockets. One tweet was particularly funny if the matter of McHale’s firing was not so serious. Lynn said; “REPORT Kevin McHale was fired after asking James Harden to play defense during a practice. No one asks Harden to do something like that.” The world knows Harden is all offense and plays very little defense. The problem for Harden this season is two-fold, his defense has always only been average but his shooting is also suffering.
Crazy
Over the last few weeks I’ve detailed the predicament of several African student-athletes being cleared by the NCAA Eligibility Center. Cheick Diallo was granted a waiver by the NCAA to travel with his Kansas team to Hawaii for the Maui Tournament. Despite receiving permission for the trip Diallo is still not cleared to play. Okay let me see if I understand this decision; a student-athlete can travel with his team but is not permitted to play. The university pays air fare for someone who might never be granted permission to play for the team. Should the no play decision be upheld does the NCAA reimburse the institution?
Education versus the NBA
I love NBA basketball; I love the college and high school game too. We often get caught up in the frenzy of the game and sometimes fail to consider the end. In this instance “what do you plan on accomplishing in life?” The high school player who believes he’s headed to the NBA better consider working on his jump shot and business management. I don’t have high school numbers but we could guess there are probably 200,000 or 300,000 boys across the nation. As for college the NCAA supplied these numbers.
NCAA draft eligible NBA Draft slots* Drafted Major pro
18,320 4,071 60 47** NBA 1.2%
*30 NBA teams with 2 rounds
**International players included
I didn’t figure the % but 1.2% of 18,320 athletes is a small number in the NBA, Europe or the NBA D-League. I once read it might be “easier” if we can use that term to become a neurosurgeon than becoming an NBA player.
It’s not hype this time
For a few weeks in late winter 2012 Knicks fans and the media became focused on guard Jeremy Lin. The outstanding run by Lin was dubbed “Lin-sanity” by the New York media. Not agreeing to a contract Lin would leave as a free-agent and sign with the Rockets and his play with the Lakers proved supportive however nothing quite approached that magical run with the Knicks. He’s now with the Hornets so we’ll see if there is further development to his game. There is no doubt Lin-sanity was media driven since the Knicks were so starved for good basketball. The same statement was made recently regarding rookie Kristaps Porzingis. This time I don’t believe the quick start by Porzingis is media driven the guy can play.
Maybe Stephen A. Smith should pay a little more attention to his ESPN colleague Brian Windhorst. He said recently; “Porzingis is the most exciting European player I’ve ever seen.” His numbers after this short point of the season are among the best for NBA rookies, 12.8 ppg and 8.6 rebounds. His game will continue to grow and he’s got a growing NBA following, according to the NBA you cannot purchase his jersey currently. Porzingis jerseys are on back-order having been sold out something I don’t believe ever occurred with Lin. IF Porzingis continues to grow his game in two or three years Knick fans might be sayin’ “Carmelo who”?

Basketball from a fans perspective
Ya Charles, we get it!
Charles Barkley reminds us on every occasion possible the “turrible” state of the Lakers, okay we get it you don’t like the Lakers. I can speak for Laker fans in stating we expected more this season, no NBA Championship just better basketball. If Barkley checked around the association he might discover a number of other “turrible” teams. Even more interesting several of these teams earned playoff berths last season. The list is not intended to be complete the 76ers, Nets and Lakers and several other teams are excluded. This should provide plenty of discussion on teams without Lakers across the front of their jersey. The standings on Wednesday morning 11/18:
Pelicans 1 win 10 losses
Blazers 4 wins 8 losses
Rockets 4 wins 7 losses
Thunder 6 wins 5 losses
Clippers 6 wins 4 losses
"Houston we've had a problem"
Those were the words spoken by Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Swigert in April 1970 on the way to the moon. That sentence might have been repeated by Rockets GM Daryl Morey recently. I don’t know about you but I was surprised by the sudden firing of Kevin McHale. The Rockets have begun the season in a disappointing manner considering they were a playoff team. A number of coaches are not good head coaches they have difficulty leading, I don’t believe McHale is one of them. According to GM Morey “the team was not responding to him and there was no time to wait for a turnaround.” Assistant J.B. Bickerstaff was named interim head coach replacing McHale. J.B. is the son of veteran head and assistant coach at several stops Bernie Bickerstaff.
Triple-Double
We have become accustom to the triple-double in basketball. It might be more noteworthy when it occurs in an unusual manner. The Heat lost 103-91 to the Heat but Hassan Whiteside had quite a game. His line from the game read; 22 points 14 rebounds and 10 blocked shots. The single game blocked shot total places Whiteside in some pretty exclusive company. Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson, Dikembe Mutombo and Kareem Abdul Jabbar all managed 10 or more blocked shots in a game during their careers.
Kings of Turmoil
Four veteran comedians came together to form “The Original Kings of Comedy” in 2000. This is 15 years later and we have a situation in Sacramento we could term “The Original King(s) of Turmoil” but this time nobody is laughing or telling jokes. I’m referring to a continuing issue with the Sacramento Kings head coach, player(s) and the owner. By now you have read or heard “Boogie” Cousins and his profanity laced tirade aimed at Coach George Karl. He’s said to have apologized to his team and the coach, meantime Vlade Divac claims Karl’s job is “safe.” Could we finger point--of course we can, how about owner Vivek Ranadive? In a manner similar to a movie hero he came in the 9th hour to save the Kings franchise for Sacramento, it was headed to Seattle.
For unknown reasons Mike Malone was fired and replaced by George Karl in February 2015, later reports circulated Randive had attempted to fire Karl. I’ve never been a Karl fan despite his resume, he seems to wear out his welcome and teams either fire him or he walks away. For recent history check out his last coaching stop in Denver. Nuggets. We have the Karl-Randive issue, then Karl-Cousins and finally Rajon Rondo. In July Rondo signed a 1-year contract with the Kings after falling out with the Mavs and Coach Rick Carlisle. Unlike Boogie Cousins Rondo’s game has continued on a downward path since he left the Celtics. We are weeks away from December and the question remains will the King(s) of Turmoil resolve itself?
“The future’s so bright”
The complete the line from the 1986 hit by Timbuk 3 is; “The future’s so bright I gotta wear shades.” Some of you might not be old enough to remember the recording however it could easily apply to the Wolves. They have added rookie Karl-Anthony Towns to a lineup featuring last years Rookie of the Year Andrew Wiggins and Ricky Rubio at the point. Veterans Kevin Garnett and Tayshaun Prince have been added as well to provide leadership and depth at the power and small forward slots.
23-year old Shabazz Muhammad is the first small forward off the bench and eventually rookie Tyus Jones will move to the number two position behind Rubio. Just adding talent is not always the key to success you must include the “right” coach to lead this collection of youngsters and few veterans. It’s up to Sam Mitchell to prove he’s the coach to lead this team deep into the playoffs. At some point the winter nights in the Twin Cities might be quite warm as the “Baby” Wolves continue to grow up before our very eyes.

Basketball from a fans perspective
One and done
I’m going to speculate, Cheik Diallo was likely a one and done prospect. It’s my belief Bill Self didn’t expect him to return for a sophomore year at Kansas. Last week we discussed the NCAA’s delay in clearing players academically. The guardian for Central Florida’s Tacko Fall threatens a lawsuit against the NCAA if Fall is not granted a waiver. For no clear explanation reason Fall was declared “eligible “recently. Someone might question why the concern because the 6-9 Diallo “Was headed to the NBA anyway.”
We can speculate all day if we wish, is he coming or is he staying? Since the NCAA is involved in this process shouldn’t they set a time limit to establish the eligibility of an athlete? In our hypothetical situation the University of “A” admits student athlete “B” based on high school transcripts. He enrolled at the school in June or late July, the fall semester begins in August. We are now in the middle of November and the NCAA is yet to announce a yes or no regarding player “B“. Doesn’t make great deal of sense to me the amount of time, how bout you?
Bits n Pieces
Have you heard it yet; the chorus that says; “Can the Warriors win 80 games?” I’m not a hater I like the Warriors especially Steph Curry. It just seems every time an NBA team has a swift start the media begins the discussion. I have no problem should they break the all-time won-loss record, that’s what records are for to be broken.
Here’s a name we haven’t heard for awhile Donald Sterling. I didn’t realize the former Clippers owner had filed a lawsuit against his wife. He was attempting to overturn sale of the team and return ownership to himself. The court ruled in Mrs. Sterling’s favor so maybe this might be the last bit of Donald Sterling news?
We knew there was a connection but how close is it you ask? Projected number one (or two depending on your mock draft) Ben Simmons is at LSU because___________. He’s at LSU because of his godfather, I’ll fill in the blank for you, LSU associate head Coach David Patrick is a former teammate of Dave Simmons. Dave is Ben’s dad, now you know the closeness of the relationship.
Reports have circulated on the subject of a nickname for Knicks rookie Kristaps Porzingis. It seems he doesn’t like any of them he’s heard and is trying to provide one himself. Porzingis is from Latvia he doesn’t realize he’s violating a cardinal rule. In this nation “You cannot provide your nickname it must be supplied by someone.” We just accepted the fact James Brown anointed himself “The Godfather of Soul.”
We don’t know
One of the barbers in the shop I get my hair cut made this statement when I walked in. “The Lakers should have drafted (Jahlil) Okafor.” Leading up to the 2015 draft all indications pointed to the fact the Lakers would draft either Karl-Anthony Towns or Okafor. A week or so prior to the draft it was clear the Wolves with the first pick would chose Towns which meant Okafor was destined to be a Laker even he said as much. The Lakers may have known all along whom they were going to draft. I believe I wasn’t the only one shocked when the commissioner said; “With the second pick in the 2015 NBA Draft the Los Angeles Lakers select D’Angelo Russell from the Ohio State University.” I must confess I almost fell off my couch when I heard the commissioners’ pronouncement.
This is not one of that player A is better than player B we don’t know its way too early in the game, the NBA season isn‘t a month old yet. It’s still a Big Mans game and at 6-11 and 275 pounds it would appear Okafor is a stud. At the same time can we state with conviction the 6-5 195 pound Russell will not be a stud by the end of the season? It’s interesting all the talk we are hearing from the media is “The Lakers made a mistake in passing on Okafor and Kristaps Porzingis.” Two factors of concern, the Lakers had combo Jordan Clarkson in place prior to the draft. He excelled last season for a rookie but is considered more a combo guard. This is fact Russell is playing no 4th quarters to date, what’s that about coach?
First NAIA then Division I
Louisville basketball has a unique distention winning a national championship at two different levels. They won the 1948 NAIA Tournament and moving up to Division I they won the NCAA Championship in 1980, 1986 and 2013. While researching this account I discovered several other schools which first competed at the NAIA level would become Division I. Louisville is not alone below is a short list of schools which first competed at the NAIA level before becoming Division I.
San Diego State
Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State)
Indiana State
Tennessee State
Grambling
Grand Canyon
Southern Illinois University
Oral Roberts (D-1, later NAIA and returned to D-1 in 1991)
That should give you an idea why the NAIA Tournament no longer holds the prestige it once did. For a variety of reasons these institutions decided to improve the standing of their sports programs. It’s likely we’ll never see another Willis Reed (Grambling & Knicks) or Jack Sikma (Illinois Wesleyan & Sonics) make it into the NBA.

Basketball from a fans perspective
The Big “O”
He played in a different era and is among the athletes we seem to have somehow forgotten. Oscar Robertson is in the FIBA, College and Naismith Halls of Fame. In 1997 the NBA on its 50th anniversary selected its 50 greatest players and Robertson was one of those included. That should provide you proof of his impact on the game of basketball. Robertson nicknamed the Big O played guard at a time most players his size (6-5 220) were playing small forward. He was the pre-curser to what the NBA would become when drafted number one by the Cincinnati Royals (Kings) in 1960.
The Big O remains the only NBA player to average a triple-double for an entire NBA season. 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds and 11.4 assists per game gaudy numbers by any standards. In 1970 Robertson was traded to the Bucks and teamed with Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul Jabbar) to win an NBA Championship in 1971. Robertson once dished out 22 assists against the Knicks and Nationals (76ers) and scored 56 points against the Lakers. Now 76 years old he still attends University of Cincinnati games on occasion. This short account doesn’t do justice to one of the all-time greats. A number of books, magazines and internet can introduce you further to the Big O.
Kansas City in the NBA
I know you are tired of my belly aching about no NBA in Kansas City; I am tired of lamenting too over what might have been. If only somebody had vision way back when. I believe and continue to maintain Kansas City no longer has the Kings franchise due to its tight fisted owners. First off at one point there were upwards of eight (8) franchise owners. One or two individuals own a larger percentage of the team than the others but it was never clear who had the most clout. It’s the belief by many financial decisions were complicated with the numbers of owners. Fast forward a few years prior to the franchise sale to Greg Luckinbill the number of owners was reduced so decision making should have been easier with fewer partners. Anyway back to the why no NBA in Kansas City it amounts to $100,000, that’s the difference between the amount the Kings played Ron Boone over Moses Malone they could have drafted. If we take the payment adjust it for inflation and other variables it comes to $423,084.68 today. The NBA then and today despite the success of the Warriors is still a Big Mans game.
The 6-10 Moses in his first two seasons in the ABA averaged nearly 20 points and 13 rebounds a game. If it appears I’m thrashing the 6-2 Boone that is not the case he would only play for the Kings for two seasons before moving on although he played another 6 seasons. In the 1976 ABA dispersal draft players from folded franchises were placed in a pool. NBA teams were able to pick based on their season ending record. With the 3rd pick the Kings chose Boone and with 5th pick the Blazers choose Malone, the Buffalo Braves (Clippers) traded Malone to the Rockets were he became a 5-time All Star in six seasons with the Rockets. In 1979 he was named MVP while playing for the Rockets he would lead his team to the Finals in 1981 and win his second NBA MVP award. In 1982 Malone was traded to the 76ers where he would lead them to an NBA Championship. Other honors included being selected as a member of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary Team. He would be enshrined in the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2001. This is a what-if story; what if the Kings had not surrounded Malone with talent would he reach the astronomical levels he did as an NBA player? We could play what if all day and all night.
Are you scared?
The Warriors roster says Steph Curry is 6-3 and weighs 190 pound, I believe those might be exaggerated to a degree. He might be an inch or so shorter and may weigh 175-180 pounds. Seeing his slight build we might understand why there were few offers when Steph graduated high school. Steph didn’t appear to have the skill to play at the collegiate level despite his NBA genes. Davidson a small (1,770 enrollment) Division I school in Davidson (NC) is located about 27 miles north of Charlotte was one of the few offering him a scholarship. Has the diminutive point guard become the most popular player in the NBA?
Several in the media speculate Steph may have surpassed LeBron in popularity among NBA fans. That view can never be confirmed, there is a barometer we can check jersey sales. At this point I have no idea where Steph sales are compared to LeBron. As for the headline of this story allow me to pose a question to you. I’m sure if the 6-8 250 pound LeBron James walked into a room he could intimidate by his stature alone. I don‘t believe Steph would intimidate anyone except on the basketball court. Get this he was born in Akron too Steph might be the cities “second“ best know basketball player besides that other guy.
NCAA needs a fix
If the NCAA continues to be the overseer of collegiate sports they have work to do. In this instance we are only discussing a single issue, the issue of collegiate eligibility. Tacko Fall joins Cheik Diallo in being denied eligibility by the NCAA. Earlier we discussed the issue regarding Diallo enrolled at Kansas. The 7-6 Fall is at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. He’s in school but his case is slightly different, Diallo’s not been allowed to practice while Fall was first permitted to practice and was later forced to sit down by the NCAA. A cynical person might speculate; “Another case of a school allowing a dumb jock into school just to play sports.” No dumb jock Fall had a 3.6 GPA his last two years of high school he enrolled in summer school at UCF and finished with an A and B in two classes. Fall is an engineering candidate so if there is no NBA career in his future he certainly can move into that field.
Fall is from Senegal on the west coast of the African continent, he came to the U.S. to attend high school. His guardian indicates they “plan on suing the NCAA if he’s not granted eligibility by the NCAA.” I don’t claim any inside knowledge but what goes here? First it was Skal Labissiere at Kentucky then Cheik Diallo and now Fall. ESPN’s Jay Bilas has been a long-time critic of the NCAA and its implementation of policy. Bilas says; “The NCAA should be about administering and governing athletic competition, not anything else and this is totally out its lane.” Bilas played basketball at Duke for Coach K and later served on his staff as an assistant coach, he‘s worked for ESPN since 1995. NOTE: Before I could publish this report the NCAA granted Fall a waiver to play basketball. I’m running the story because this will not be the last time this issue will come up, in addition the decision on Diallo is yet to be decided.

Basketball from a fans perspective
Will they compete?
The Pacers finished the 2013-14 season with a 56-26 record. They lost to the Heat in the Eastern Conference playoffs two years in a row. 2014-15 was the year of the breakthrough they would beat the Heat and play for an NBA Championship. Paul George sustained a serious leg injury in August 2014 while working out for Team USA. He would not return to action for the Pacers until April 2015. The George injury was the beginning of what would become a 38-44 season.
The Pacers would finish out of the playoffs even in the weak eastern conference. Pacer fans are expecting more from their team this upcoming season with the return of George the addition of veterans Jordan Hill and Monta Ellis and others. Does Coach Vogel have enough horses to overcome the Cavs or Heat? That question will remain unanswered for awhile but I’m sure Pacer fans look forward with anticipation to improved play on the court.
He’s that good
The Associated Press released its 2015-16 All American team; the team is comprised of three seniors one junior and one freshman. It’s certainly occurred in the past however its uncommon for a first year player to be selected as a member of the AP first team. Ben Simmons of LSU is that freshman All American and he really is that good. Simmons was born and grew up in Australia however his dad holds dual citizenship.
The elder Simmons an American migrated to the South Pacific nation to pursue a basketball career. Dave Simmons played basketball at Oklahoma City University then several Australian teams from 1989 through 2001. While playing basketball he met and would marry Julie and they would have two children daughter Olivia and Ben. Although Ben is slightly taller than his dad (6-10) at 225 pounds he weighs considerably less than dad (225 versus 247).
Illinois Wesleyan
Is a liberal arts college located in Bloomington located about 120 miles southwest of Chicago. The last NFL player from this Division III School made it to the NFL in 1952. MLB is a different matter there are six current and former players who honed their baseball skill at Wesleyan. As for the NBA only one athlete has made it into the NBA and he was good one. Jack Sikma was the 8th pick in the first round of the 1977 draft by the Seattle Sonics.
The bulk of his 14-year career was spent as a member of the Sonics although he spent five years playing for the Milwaukee Bucks. Sikma was a 7X NBA All Star and NBA Champion (1979). Sikma was an excellent free-throw shooter for a 6-11 center; he managed to lead the NBA in free-throw shooting (92.2) during the 1987-88 season. For his career Sikma shoot nearly 85% from the free-throw line. Why Sikma isn’t in the Hall of Fame is a mystery to many his career numbers are superior to several others already enshrined.
Oh really?
This might appear aimed at Kansas basketball that’s not the case. It’s actually aimed at a Kansas City Star reporter. Earlier we reported 2016 Big Man Harry Giles announced he was committing to Duke. Later in the week Schnider Herard a 6-10 255 pound center announced his choice. The Plano (TX) youngster is headed to Mississippi State in the fall. Rustin Dodd writes as if this is the end of the world, he uses words like “spurn” to describe this latest Kansas development. Kansas basketball will be fine despite the dire warnings of Mr. Dodd.
Carolina Blue for him
Pre-season favorite North Carolina picked up another commitment. Surely there must be sort of significance to this prospects name but so far it remains unclear. Seventh Woods is a 6-2 point guard and is headed to North Carolina. Woods is the number 35 prospect in the nation by Rivals and is from Columbia South Carolina. So far at least the anvil hanging over the head of the Carolina program seems to not have affected recruiting. As you might be aware an investigation into academics at the school uncovered “bogus” classes on a number of athletes transcripts. The NCAA was conducting an examination but so far to my knowledge nothing has come forth from the organization.

Basketball from a fans perspective
Be careful
Emmanuel Mudiay was one of a number of prospects the Lakers worked out prior to the draft. Once the draft was held they passed on Mudiay to go with Ohio State’s D’Angelo Russell. If you remember the story Mudiay was originally headed to SMU and then changed his mind, he signed a 1-year contract playing in China.
Laker Coach Byron Scott stated; “I didn't think he was a true point (Mudiay) guard," I didn't think he was a guy who made great decisions when we saw him and had him here. I thought that was something he would have to learn to do to run that position.” Scott’s comment provided fodder for Mudiay; he didn’t shot particularly well in his first game against the Lakers. Mudiay did manage a double-double scoring 12 points and dishing out 10 assists.
Good Detroit news
In recent years we’ve heard story after story about Detroit and its many problems, the crime rate, the decline of the auto industry, how about a positive story about the Motor City? Andre Drummond is that positive, he’s led the way as the Pistons are off to one of their best starts in recent memory. Even more interesting the 6-11 Drummond’s NBA numbers are advanced over those of his one year at UConn. Not only is he a double-double machine registering 20-20 numbers.
Drummond’s not snatched down 20 rebounds in every game but has managed to average that over six games. As this is written Drummond is scoring at a 20.3 ppg clip he’s grabbing rebounds as if he’s the only player on the court (20.3 per game). The only down-side to his game he’s “Dwight Howard” on the free-throw line. In closing I must applaud Coach Stan Van Gundy; I haven’t been much of a fan in the past but it’s clear the Pistons are tuned into his coaching.
It’s easy to understand
There is no method to document my statement however I believe it to be true. There will plenty of border crossings this winter as assistant and head coaches’ head north to Orangeville, Ontario about 50 miles from Toronto. They will be traveling there to see Thon Maker in action. If you check Rivals you’ll note they list Josh Jackson a 6-7 guard from Napa (CA) as the top prospect in the Class of 2016. I have no argument with Rivals they perform a service however I believe Thon Maker the 7-1 giant from South Sudan by way of Australia should be number one. Check out video of Maker and make your own judgment, at 220 pounds he glides across the floor often leading the fast break for his team.
His shooting is secondary because he towers over his high school competition; college will be a better test of his skill in that department. While we are discussing shooting Maker has range out to the high school 3-point line. At the top of his list of schools and not in any order; Arizona State, Florida State, Indiana, Kentucky, Notre Dame, St. John’s and UNLV. Wait for it wait for it, he reminds me of a taller version of the Thunder’s Kevin Durant. I know the comparison might place pressure on Maker but I believe given time. His game has grown which indicates he appears coachable.
We have arrived
I'm excited once again; Friday the 13th (not the movie) college basketball begins once again. I was excited a few weeks ago when the NBA began play for real. I’ve talked to acquaintances and one says; “I don’t like the NBA” while another states; “I just follow the NBA.” Yours truly is one of the nuts that loves the game at all levels, I have even attended 8 and 9 year olds games when I’ve known the parents and the child. Now is the time everyone begins predicting the NCAA Division I Champion, not me that is a task far too difficult for me to speculate in November.
Injuries can impact a team causing them to not play at the expected level. In addition if they manage a successful record some team is waiting in the weeds to knock them off in the NCAA Tournament. Don’t think it can happen UConn in 2014 was a 7 seed when they upset the Kentucky Wildcats to win the championship. There have been other upsets; underdog Villanova beating Georgetown in 1985 or the North Carolina State beating Houston’s Cougars in 1983. The Kansas City Royals baseball team has a saying which I like; “Keep the line moving” which I take to mean don’t give up. With that said there are few teams we could say are not under consideration.
Change of scenery
I seriously doubt Laker fans will mistake Roy Hibbert for the overbearing presence of Wilt Chamberlain, the smooth sharp shooting Kareem Abdul Jabbar or even the charisma of Shaquille O’Neal. Given an adequate adjustment period I believe Hibbert will surprise a few. The experts have already provided us their view giving the 7-2 center little if any opportunity to succeed with the Lakers. I certainly don’t have the ability to peer into the future the doom and gloom crowd fail to take into account Hibbert was twice an NBA All Star in 2012 and again in 2014.
Hibbert gained a spot on the NBA All Defensive second team in 2014. Hibbert was never the focus of the offense with the Pacers and the same situation will exist with the Lakers. Hibbert will be expected to block a few shots and snatch down rebounds; he’ll pass the basketball skillfully for a center. The “experts” have stated the belief Kobe Bryant will be a difficult teammate for Hibbert, which might be true but consider this fact. If Hibbert doesn’t show any signs similar to those of Dwight Howard he should be okay with Kobe. Do you need me to remind you of those stories?

Basketball from a fans perspective
Duke wins again
With Duke coming off an NCAA Championship we might ask; “What is the plan for an encore?” We could start with an outstanding 2016 recruiting class which arrives next fall. Harry Giles the number two prospect on Rivals suffered a torn ACL and will miss the 2015-16 high school season. That’s the bad news, the good news the 6-10 225 pound Giles announced he is headed to Duke.
Initial reports indicate he should look forward to 100% recovery by next fall. Giles from Winston-Salem (NC) indicated one of the keys to him choosing Duke over several other schools was his friendship with number three prospect Jason Tatum. The two were teammates on the gold medal winning USA Men’s Under 19 team, the 6-8 Tatum had committed to Duke in July. How good is Duke next year, they have the number one recruited Class for 2016.
No do over’s
ESPN recently ran a story titled; “What if the New Jersey Nets had drafted Kobe Bryant in 1996.” I read the account and thought to myself “There are no do over’s what’s the purpose?” The writer purported to tell the story how the NBA landscape would have changed if Kobe had become a Net. 1,001 similar stories could exist if we choose to speculate on draft history. In 1992 the Magic chose Shaquille O’Neal over Alonzo Mourning, we know O’Neal didn’t remain with the Magic but just suppose. The Knicks or the Nets conduct a draft night trade for O’Neal, would he remain in New York or New Jersey (he was born in Newark) for his career?
How about the Wolves, in 1995 they drafted Kevin Garnett with the next pick the Vancouver Grizzlies drafted Bryant “Big Country” Reeves. What if the picks had been reversed would an NBA team remain in Western Canada with a talent like Garnett playing for the franchise? Reeves serviceable had a shorten career due to injury. In 1997 the Spurs chose Tim Duncan and the 76ers followed choosing Keith Van Horn. Would the legacy of Greg Popovich be different with a Van Horn in the Spurs lineup rather than Duncan? I have no argument with the author of the story but as you can see there are a cluster of stories that could have caused a ripple in NBA history. Maybe Kobe was the choice since he’s at the end of his career, in summation there are no do over’s.
I’ll explain
Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com wrote a story titled; “Mizzou, Tennessee look silly for passing on MSU's Ben Howland”. As you might remember Howland was hired by Mississippi State, I have no idea why Tennessee passed on the coach. As for Mizzou there is justification which I can offer for you. Former AD Mike Alden had been roasted by alums regarding his basketball hires. Despite some missteps he struck gold hiring football Coach Gary Pinkel now in year 15, basketball has been an entirely different matter. Norm Stewart long-time coach was “asked” to leave and Alden became the bad guy to deliver the word. The first basketball hire was Quin Snyder who would resign (before his rumored firing). It seemed every year of Mike Anderson’s tenure stories circulated he was seeking employment elsewhere. We have no way of verifying the reports but they did occur. After declaring himself a “Tiger for Life” he left for Arkansas his dream job, Frank Haith replaced Anderson.
All the coaches had limited success although rumblings of trouble always appeared to be present. The next to the last coach Alden hired Frank Haith was connected to the Miami football scandal. Although Haith had been vetted nothing was ever discovered connecting the coach to the Miami football scandal. After a mandated NCAA suspension the handwriting was likely on the wall for Haith. He would resign after the 2013-14 season and be hired by Tulsa. Alden probably feeling the heat might have wanted to hire Ben Howland but was reluctant because of “baggage”. 94 miles west in Warrensburg (MO) former Mizzou player Kim Anderson had built a successful Division II program at the University of Central Missouri. In addition Anderson had Mizzou connections playing for Norm Stewart and serving as an assistant on his staff. Anderson interviewed at the time Stewart was relieved of duties but was not hired. Alden possibility believed Anderson was a far safer hire than that of a Ben Howland.
Doesn’t come easy
I was discussing the college basketball season with an acquaintance. I’m not sure if it was him or me but the conversation moved to Texas basketball. I said; “I’m glad to see Shaka Smart get the job at Texas.” I’m not exactly sure of his words but he appeared to be unimpressed with my statement, I’m not sure if it was the record of departed Coach Rick Barnes at Texas or something else. I’m not downplaying Virginia Commonwealth basketball he registered a .744 winning percentage (163-56) there. At Texas with the states rich basketball talent the potential for Texas basketball is astronomical. With all coaching changes this one too must be given time.
Any new hire needs at least three years to impact the program, same for Texas. I believe the advantage of a Shaka Smart is he can recruit. Have you noticed how little talent comes from outside the State of Texas? Kevin Durant who played at Texas is from Maryland, the bulk of other prospects come from within. Take time and check out the rosters of Texas A&M, Baylor, SMU and others. I could be wrong about Smart and his ability to recruit and coach but I don’t believe so. He’s got to be time to implement his program so hopefully regents and fans will be patient during the change over.

Basketball from a fans perspective
What does he know?
There are times I disagree with the comments of TNT’s Reggie Miller, Charles Barkley and ESPN’s Tim Legler. There are others but I wanted to provide you a direction of my latest rant. In their role as analyst the individuals above often cross that line with me where I must disagree. I must consider this fact whether I agree or not they “did play the game.” Doesn’t matter if they were the last guy off the bench or had a Hall of Fame career they played basketball at the top level i.e. the NBA. That brings me back to a personal rant that bugs me.
Mike Greenberg, Colin Cowherd and Stephen A. Smith have no more insight than we do. They can and do have an opportunity to interview athletes but asking questions may not always provide insight, they are full of opinions often no more valid than ours. I once heard a local sports radio host state; “We are professionals, this is what we are paid to do.” Given time to prepare I’m sure we could prepare a set of adequate questions for anyone without being a paid professional. It doesn’t matter if have a friendship if you haven’t competed at the pro level how do you know anymore than us.
He’s okay
The Lakers have gotten off to a “glacial” start this season except for one player. His name is not Kobe it’s Jordan not that Jordan. It‘s Jordan Clarkson a 6-5 combo guard who was drafted by the Wizards as the 46th pick in the 2014 draft. Clarkson might be one of those athletes who might prove to be better in the NBA than college. Beginning his college tenure at Tulsa he would eventually land at Mizzou where his talent would come to the forefront.
Although many (including yours truly) believed he was talented there were questions about leaving Mizzou early. Injuries last season allowed Clarkson an opportunity to play and he went to work. His numbers; 18.3 ppg, 2 assist and 2 rebounds a game shooting .558 from the floor. The focus on Clarkson is not just his offensive game he plays defense too. Will Clarkson become an All-Star is yet to be determined lets just say for now he’s steady.
Records---we break them
I heard the claim during the World Series “baseball is all about the numbers.” That’s certainly true but it’s not just that sport alone every sport is numbers including basketball. The dawn of the NBA season has seen records broken and before the end of the season we probably will see more. LeBron James joined the 25,000 point club becoming the youngest in the NBA to accomplish the feat. Active players with 25,000 or more points and their position: Kobe Bryant (3) Dirk Nowitzki (7), Tim Duncan (14) Kevin Garnett (15), Paul Pierce (16) and LeBron James (20).
There are five players with more than 30,000 points with Kobe the only active player, with time left in his career can LeBron eclipsed the 30,000 point mark? The Spurs Tim Duncan is 39 however he too established a record recently. There have been older players than his current age but none have played with one team the length of time he has. 954 games with the Spurs and counting, no NBA player has ever played that number of games for one team. Wonder what Duncan’s record will be at the end of the season. In another record breaker Kobe Bryant opened year number 20 in a Lakers uniform.
Remember him?
It’s not just me go back to June 26 2015, that’s the day after the NBA Draft. That’s also the date Stephen A. Smith went on a screaming rant regarding the Knicks. I found at least four clips from ESPN’s First Take, don’t just take my word see how Smith goes off on everything connected with the Knicks especially the draft choice. speak of Kristaps Porzingis the 7-3 Latvian who received the bulk of Smith’s complaints. It’s still early in the season and just looking at numbers does not always provide a true picture, in this instance that’s all we have to work with. He’s only shooting .396 from the floor improvement needed.
Porzingis is at 12.0 ppg and 7.4 rebounds decent enough 83% from the free-throw line are outstanding for a Big Man adjusting to the NBA. Even Smith has made a U-turn in his early appraisal of Porzingis he said this morning; “Porzingis is 2 or 3 years away.” An acknowledgement by Smith he believes the pick was justified. We can’t always guarantee the success of a player there are a number of factors. Rest assured the Wizards drafted Kwame Brown with the expectation he would have a reasonably good NBA career. It was only later they discovered his basketball skills were limited. The same for Porzingis the Knicks expectations were high at draft time despite the next day comments of one Stephen A. Smith.
Bits n Pieces
Several might remember the story of Kansas City prep school Barstow and its 2015 state high school championship. In addition to the championship the focus was on Shea Rush the son of former Pembroke Hill standout Jaron Rush. Shea was a key to the championship but so was 6-6 220 pound forward Jeriah Horne. This power forward’s stock has risen over the course of the summer; he’s received offers from DePaul, Wichita State and Kansas State among others.
Looking ahead to the June 2016 draft I came across an unfamiliar name. I checked NBADraft.net and DraftExpress.com and both listed him as an early first round choice, I’m referring to 7-1 216 pound Dragan Bender. DraftExpress list him as the number five pick while NBADraft.net has him at six. Bender plays for Maccabi Tel Aviv (Israel) but might be headed for the NBA next year. This Croatian native might become the second Euro player drafted in the first round in successive years. Despite being a 7-footer it’s quite likely he will be a power forward in the NBA.
The arena inside Municipal Auditorium is one the oldest bastions of basketball still in continuous use. Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis (IA) and The Palestra in Philadelphia are the only arenas believed older still in use. The “Muni” as it’s nicknamed originally opened in 1935 and has undergone renovations in 2007 and 2013. The Muni is home to the University of Missouri-Kansas City men’s team, the 7,300 seat arena also serves as host for the annual NAIA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Somebody convince me please, this is not a hate situation. I have difficulty seeing Russell Westbrook leading the Thunder deep into the playoffs. I never said Westbrook wasn’t talented it seems I continue to witness a player with a “ME” first attitude. Last season was different, due to injuries Westbrook and Durant were not often on the court at the same time. I’m ready for you to prove to all you are the best point guard in the NBA.
What does he know?

Basketball from a fans perspective
Winning 101
This is a baseball story but will apply to basketball as well, keep reading and I will bring it on home. Immediately after the Royals World Series win a fan wrote; “They (Royals) don’t have any superstars.” His comment smacked me in the face, where is it written a winning team must have one or two superstars to win? Fact is having too many cooks sometimes causes catastrophe in the kitchen. How about the fact you have a bunch of guys (or girls) that believe in team play, support their teammates and believe they cannot lose. Below are examples of teams wanting “IT” more than the other guy? The 1982 North Carolina State team went into the NCAA Tourney as a six seed; winning their games eventually they would face the Phi Slama Jama Houston Cougars the number one seed for the NCAA Championship. With seconds left in the game an air ball by NC State’s Derek Whittenberg landed in the hands of teammate Lorenzo Charles. Stationed under the basket for a rebound Charles just laid the ball in as the buzzer went off.
Final score NC State 54 Houston 52 and the North Carolina State Wolfpack was crowned 1982 NCAA Champion. How could Houston lose this game they had future Hall of Fame players Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler on the team? There were others, Danny and the Miracles were the tag line for the 1988 Kansas team. The team had finished 3rd in the Big 8 (now Big 12) Conference behind Kansas State and Oklahoma. Led by Danny Manning Kansas would eventually face Oklahoma and win the NCAA Championship 83-79. How about the NBA is there any example to study? The Pistons were not supposed to win the 2004 NBA Championship they had good players but no superstar athletes; they had a collection of players who refused to concede or lose a championship to a more star-studded Laker team. If you want it more than the other guy “it doesn’t matter” how many superstars the opposition has. Kenny Mayne of ESPN might have stated it best; “Losers have stories winners have wins.”
Be careful, be very careful
Jared Dudley is with his 5th team since his arrival in the NBA so might say the term “journey man” might fit him? Despite Dudley’s marginal status as an NBA player he manages to talk a great deal of trash. Kobe Bryant is an easy target so it wasn’t surprising when he made negative comments regarding Kobe Bryant. His next target was the Knicks Carmelo Anthony, Dudley in an interview indicated “Carmelo was overrated because his teams failed to advance in the playoffs.”
Evidently Carmelo didn’t appreciate Dudley’s commentary of his game because the first time he faced the Wizards and Dudley he exploded for 37 points. Carmelo’s box score read, 11-18 from the floor 11-12 from the free-throw line along with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Oh, Dudley scored 0 points on 0-2 from the floor. Dudley made the overrated statement last May in an interview, he claims he apologized later. Can we guess Carmelo didn’t receive the text or email? Final score Knicks 117 Wizards 110.
It’s okay with me
The 6-10 225 pound phenom is listed on most mock draft lists as either the first or second pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. I speak of Ben Simmons in his freshman year at LSU who as this is written is yet to play his first game however his Snapchat comment made news. Simmons said; “You can catch me on the Lakers next year.” I’m okay if this should play out next season. Its likely Simmons is headed to the NBA after his freshman year but its likely not the Lakers. The team has no 1st round pick and I seriously doubt he slides into the second round. Unless the Lakers manage a trade or sorts Simmons is headed anywhere other than Los Angeles.
The great “wall(s)” of China
Since the retirement of Yao Ming the question has become “When is the next basketball player from China headed to the NBA?” Many believed there might be a continuous line of players as Yao‘s 2002 draft proved to be. In 2007 6-11 Yi Jianlian was drafted by the Bucks and 6-9 Sun Ye by Lakers. Both would return to China resuming pro careers while having only limited success in the NBA. There are two high profile prospects on the NBA’s radar; one is likely to arrive before the other. Just in case you may have missed previous accounts allow me to introduce you to Wang Zhelin.
Zhelin is a 7 footer who weighs in at 250 pounds, his 3-year numbers in the Chinese Basketball Association are nearly 22 points and almost 12 rebounds a game. Zhelin will turn 22 in January and don’t be surprised if you hear his name announced in the 2016 NBA Draft. Zhou Qi is 7-2 but a rail-thin 220 pounds, since he’s only 19 and needs to develop his game further its unlikely he’ll be in the 2016 draft. One area that is above average is his shot-blocking skills. NBA teams are always keen on the ability of a player to block shots. Age 22 seems to be the magic number for Chinese players to enter the NBA Draft.

Basketball from a fans perspective
R.I.P.
I struggled to locate my account but publishing Words three times a week proved too much, I‘m sure I wrote of former Pacer Mel Daniels. The Pacers announced last Friday the former center had died at the age of 71. Much of the foundation of success of the ABA Pacers could be laid at the feet of the 6-9 center. In the 1967 draft he chose the Minnesota Muskies over the NBA Cincinnati Royals (Kings). After a season Daniels was traded to the Pacers where his career blossomed.
Daniels was key to the three ABA Championships won by the Pacers (‘70, ‘72 and ‘73). We never had an opportunity to witness his play in the NBA the merger occurred in 1976 the year he retired. Daniels would play only 11 games that year as his career was winding down. In 2012 Daniels joined several other former ABA players in the Naismith Hall of Fame. It‘s too bad unlike the NBA with its vast film and video history we have little evidence of Mel Daniels and other ABA giants. Mel Daniels.is one of a number of former players we've lost this year R.I.P.
What!!!!
I had to check my hearing aid after the Stephen A. Smith comment I heard. Just kidding folks I do not use a hearing aid nor do I have any difficulty hearing. When you hear a statement by Stephen A. Smith you agree with it causes you to say WHAT! The shorten version of his statement and I paraphrase it; “Despite the Clippers success under Doc Rivers the Lakers still remain more popular in Los Angeles.” Kinda connected to this story is one I read on ESPN’s NBA page; “Time for younger Lakers to call the shots”. That’s a Kobe Bryant quote and he is correct, that entails a bumpy road for Laker rookies and younger players. You can’t learn how to play in the NBA sitting on the bench.
Bits n Pieces
There are times it might work out better to not say anything. I have no issue with LaMarcus Aldridge he should spend his money on things he desires. He made news announcing he was building a “house to hold his shoes.” I guess with 150 pair of athletic shoes he must have run out of space inside his house. This announcement opened the door for his critics to emerge. As I stated earlier I have no problem with this but its obvious several in the media did.
What do I do is my question, my Man-Cave is decorated with Laker gear top to bottom. I want to add a Kings jersey not the purple and black or even the powder blue they wore in the early days in Sacramento. I speak of the white with red trim jersey they wore in Kansas City. I located an economically priced jersey but here is the dilemma, it’s a Chris Webber jersey. Webber never played for the Kings in Kansas City.
Kansas received its first 2016 commitment, Mitch Lightfoot is a 6-8 210 pound forward and is a Rivals 3-star prospect. Lightfoot is from Gilbert Arizona about 24 miles (as the crow flies) from downtown Phoenix. He was born in Kansas City but his family relocated to Arizona. Lightfoot claims he became a fan of the program at an early age.
"If you tell the truth, your problems become a thing of the past. If you lie, they become your future." That quote comes from Rick Pitino Louisville coach, the question becomes do we believe him? He claims he knew nothing about the activities of his assistant coach involving the parties and women used to lure athletes to the school.
I’m viewing the Knicks-Hawks game and we could refer to the Knicks as “Lakers East.” The camera focuses on President Phil Jackson and then head coach Derek Fisher. Sitting on the bench are assistants Kurt Rambis and Jim Cleamons. On the floor at MSG is guard Sasha Vujacic.
How did he do it?
During his illustrious NBA career Kareem Abdul Jabbar became the leagues all-time leading scorer. He scored 38,387 points the majority of which came by way of the sky-hook. The most indefensible shot in basketball, how did you stop him from scoring? Although Kareem stood 7-2 he tipped the scales at a slim 225 pounds. Now contrast his weight with two of his rivals Wilt Chamberlain (275) or Utah’s Mark Eaton (291). They pushed and pushed against him on the low block attempting to keep him from going across the middle of the lane or dislodge him from his position. Chamberlain and Eaton were similar in height however smaller centers presented problems as outside shooters.
Examples might be Dave Cowens (6-9 229) and Willis Reed (6-9 235) presented the most problem for Kareem. Kareem once stated Nate Thurmond was the greatest defender he ever faced. The comment is noteworthy on several levels Bill Russell retired a year before Lew Alcindor would begin his NBA career. We have no idea how Russell would have defended him or vice-versa. Kareem’s NBA career ran from 1969-1989, he faced Chamberlain and Reed early in his career then Bill Laimbeer and Robert Parrish near the end. Were all the opposing centers Hall of Fame quality of course not but unlike today play at the center position was far superior to today.
