A shout out

No LeBron…No Luka…AD gone in the trade, who would the Lakers turn to in their Saturday afternoon match against the Pacers. It would be steady Austin Reaves who managed to fill up the box score. The box read 45 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals and 4 3 point baskets. These were contributing factors to the 124-117 victory over the Pacers, Reaves wasn’t just jacking up shots to accumulate his points. He managed to shoot 53.8% from the floor with 44.4% of it from three.

Reaves is having a career season mostly playing as a combo guard for the Lakers. My best guess, once Luka is inserted in the lineup permanently Reaves becomes the teams shooting guard however that’s my opinion, JJ Redick might have a totally different view. While speaking of Redick, last season the Laker record was 25-25 after 50 games it’s now 31-19. There certainly have been changes however the personnel are close to those of last season, what’s the difference? Could the change from Darvin Ham to JJ Redick make such a huge difference?    

Where do we go from here

By now you are fully aware the Mark Williams trade to the Lakers from the Hornets has been rescinded. Williams failed his physical, which led to the present circumstance. The question, where do we go from here, sharpshooter rookie Dalton Knecht returns and Cam Reddish. The Lakers roster now contains 15 members which now entails limited playing time for some. Because I prefer to look at the positive over the negative allow a bit of speculation here.

For the balance of the season with a deep bench JJ Redick can fully utilize a variety of talent depending on who and what is needed at the time. Knecht should blossom in this system receiving snappy passes from LeBron and Luka. Although his P/T was limited I was impressed with Knecht’s game. It’s my understanding the trade for Williams is officially dead, there is no method for the Lakers to acquire him even if he now passes a physical. For now Jaxson Hayes is the starter at the 5 and should remain in that position. This is the area of concern, Hayes is backed up at present by two post players with limited experience. Consider the fact this is not in any kind of order on the depth chart just pointing out who is available. We have 6 foot 10 260 pound Trey Jemison III, he played at UAB and has only 47 NBA games under his belt. Picked up earlier was Christian Koloko 7 foot and 220 pounds, he played at Arizona and has played in 86 NBA games.

This is completed with newly acquired Markieff Morris 6 foot 9 245 pounds. So there you have it, unlike some teams they Lakers are not lacking in the height department however its experience which could be a detriment facing the Joker and others. The Lakers could waive a roster member and there are buyout candidates should they be available. Two players Mo Bamba and Colin Castleton might be nominees for a roster spot both have Laker connections in the past.   

He was a loser

There have been only 11 head coaches in Kansas basketball history, this dates back to 1899. Imagine in 125 years of basketball and such a small number, some schools have fired and hired that number of coaches in a significant shorter period. Of course several names were interim but one name stands out, from 1899 to 1907 a guy by the name of Naismith coached the Jayhawks. He wasn’t successful at least his record would indicate that, 55 wins and 60 losses. The truth of the matter of the 11 coaches named he is the only one with a losing record.

His full name is James A. Naismith and his bio says physical educator, physician, Christian chaplain and sports coach, best known as the inventor of basketball. Yes, that Naismith…he was the first basketball coach at the University of Kansas. He would lay the groundwork for the game which is ever attached to his name. By the time Dr. Naismith died in 1939 basketball had reached heights probably far beyond what he might have envisioned at one time. The physical education teacher was only attempting to provide his students physical activity from the cold New England winters. What I find most interesting there are sports that came into being from another…basketball is clearly the only sport that stands alone as an invented game. We owe the game to one who was certainly unsuccessful coaching it…Dr. James A. Naismith.

In a manner of speaking it’s terrible

This is not your grandfather’s NBA, the change in portions of the game are quite evident. No I’m not talking about how the game is played, I’m discussing 5,001 persons connected with sports or social media who critique an individual’s game. One of my growing favorite NBA player is Victor Wembanyama, I believe as some have said he’s going to change the game. That’s the good, the bad for me is the large contingent of folks who say there are portions of his game needing refinement. I wouldn’t argue that point with anyone except in a few instances allow me to cite them for you. TNT’s Charles Barkley has gone on record numerous times claiming “Wemby needs to develop a low post game” or similar words.

I have said time and time again I don’t like Brook Lopez, Joel Embiid (when healthy) jacking up three point shots. Despite my objections there are 7 footers who are adept at the shot…Wemby is one of them. He’s shooting 35.8% from distance as this is written, for his brief career its 34.1 so he’s raised his skill level. That figure is not extraordinary for shooting from distance however for a 7 foot 4 athlete I believe its outstanding. Wemby will continue to upgrade his game over time, with that said his rebound average and his FG percentage will rise significantly over the present. A warning to you reading this, don’t expect it to be close to anything Shaq played. No bully basketball from the post, think Kareem Abdul Jabbar which I define as smooth, that’s what we’ll see from Wemby.

This is not every Saturday

February 8 was a little different, I saw three (3) basketball games. This is not every Saturday occurrence in my household but it was this afternoon and early evening. I set my alarm for 2:30 p.m. Central to ensure I didn’t miss the start of the Mizzou-Texas A&M game, the outcome was not as I desired. A&M managed to beat my Tigers 67-64, my consolation was losing to the number 10th ranked team in the nation.

I then switched to the NBA game between the Lakers and Pacers, no LeBron…no Luka…no matter. Austin Reaves led the way to victory with a career 45 point game, final score Lakers 124 Pacers 117. In the meantime the Duke-Clemson game had begun so I was changing channels to ensure the Lakers secured the victory. As for the nightcap I wanted to see Cooper Flagg in action once again. Oh, by the way during the commercial break I saw the final ticks of the clock as Kansas State upset number 16 Kansas 81-73. The NBA Celtics at Knicks is yet to start however I am not going to watch it, I’ve got to pull myself away from the television.

It’s not official

Los Angeles remains Laker Country, this is certainly not official. I offer you no proof of my statement just a belief based on observation, allow a brief explanation. The Clippers now have their own house, the magnificent Intuit Dome is open in Inglewood as most are aware. The January 19 meeting was a “home game” for the Lakers, the Clippers managed to win 116-102 before a Crypto.com crowd of 17,927. The overwhelming majority of fans were in attendance to root and cheer for their Lakers. Fast forward to February 4 and the rematch between the teams at the Intuit Dome, the Lakers were victorious this time 122-97 but here is the difference in the two games.

If you are thinking “they split the wins” that’s not what was noticeable, it was the crowd. Whenever the television cameras panned the attendees there were Laker jerseys easily spotted throughout the audience. In addition noisy cheering was picked up by the mics for Laker baskets and other efforts. What does this unscientific paper provide you…absolutely not a thing but a belief. Los Angeles remains Laker and Dodger country, basketball and baseball. The NFL Rams, Chargers plus the baseball Angels and hockey Kings have their share of fans. I admire what Steve Ballmer has done, moving his Clippers from the shadow of the Lakers by building his own arena. I am unsure even if a single championship would win over Laker fans to the Clippers side, what do you think?

What the heck are they doing

At a point I was extremely concerned about my Lakers. I could see them growing older by the minute with AARP LeBron and AD as their leadership and then BAM! They traded for Luka and that said immediately we are preparing for the future. As for their neighbors in northern California I’m not so sure. The Warriors acquired Jimmy Butler in a trade, talented as he is Butler will be 36 in September. He joins Steph Curry (37 next month) and Draymond Green (35 in March), as you can see the leadership of the Warriors is ancient by NBA standards, so what’s next for these Warriors?

The remainder of the roster is certainly talented but enough to contend for a championship…I don’t think so. Unless I’m overlooking a hidden talent on the bench it’s likely the Warriors will at most be middle of the pack for the time being. Of course a trade or star draft choice could change all that however that’s a big IF. I began this exercise by pointing to the fact my belief that the Lakers might be headed in the wrong direction. They fooled me by making a couple of trades that could prove to be beneficial now and into the future. That’s got to be the road ahead for the Warriors, as I indicate beyond the three stars they certainly don’t appear to have enough to contend going forward.

In 2028

Olympic basketball has become quite competitive, despite this fact Team USA can still produce particularly good teams. The problem the balance of the world is fast catching up to the collection of NBA Olympic stars. What if I told you Team USA would face stiff competition for Gold from France, Serbia or Germany you probably wouldn’t be shocked. What if I told you stiff competition might come from the Philippines, that might not be as much as a surprise.

You are probably aware Jordan Clarkson of the Jazz has Filipino ancestry, I’d bet money you didn’t know there are other NBA players although born in the U.S. also share the same ancestry to the island nation as Clarkson. We have Jalen Green of the Rockets, there is rising star Jared McCain of the Sixers and Ron Harper Jr. in the G-League. Anchor for this team from the Philippines would be 7 foot 3 232 pound Kai Sotto. There is no guarantee this will be composition of the team in 2028 but it is quite interesting if it comes about. This is not automatic, there are steps required to earn eligibility. Other than Sotto all those named have Filipino blood but are American citizens.

Hopefully, the deed is done

Reading this might no longer be required, by the time you read this the Lakers have acquired the center they sought after the AD trade. If that trade didn’t occur exactly what are we looking at in the meantime? We are watching 7 foot Jaxson Hayes continue to operate at the five, he became the starter after AD suffered the abdominal strain. Better yet who is backing up Hayes, there are two candidates on the roster currently?

There is 7 foot 230 pound Christian Koloko who’s played about 8 minutes a game since he earned a roster spot, Koloko has seen limited play in the NBA. Behind him is recently acquired 6 foot 10 260 pound Trey Jemison III. The most time for Jemison in the NBA is the 24 games (14 as a starter) he played for the Grizzlies in the 2023-24 season. As you can see the Lakers have several candidates to occupy space at the center position, the only remaining question are those named really reserve players or spot starters? NOTE: The trade that wasn't didn't occur, from the wire service: "The Lakers say the trade were they acquired Mark Williams for Dalton Knecht was rescinded because of the Hornets failure to satisfy a condition of the trade."   .

He’s a winner

Dennis Gates is one of those special guys, you know how I know? This past week veteran broadcaster Jimmy Dykes providing commentary for Missouri’s game against Tennessee. Dykes complimented Gates several times during the broadcast, he did this when it wasn’t necessary. He even said at a point and I paraphrase “Missouri should lock him (Gates) into an extended contract.” This might be the most challenging time to coach college basketball, with NIL money plus the transfer portal. These issues and others probably say coaching at this level is more difficult than any time in the game’s history. Despite these issues Gates has managed to produce winning teams two out of the three years he’s been at the helm.

Alumni, students and fans always want to know what have you done for me lately. Last season was a disaster yet Gates made no excuses for the mediocre performance. Those who follow the program closely were aware of issues facing Mizzou most of last season. There were fans who were ready to abandon ship, I read several letters suggesting Gates be fired. Under the departed Cuonzo Martin in 2021-22 the school finished the season with 12 wins and 21 losses which included 5 wins and 13 losses in the SEC. When hired Gates hit the ground running, his first team completed the 2022-23 season with 25 wins and 10 losses, they had 11 wins in the tough SEC. Let’s just say despite the catastrophe of last season I continued to believe in Gates and he’s proven my faith in him has been validated thus far. Only two scholarship players have been signed for the upcoming season, that’s because Missouri has a number of underclassmen who likely will return.

The Why?

Several years ago a friend asked me the question, “Why are they so many trades in the NBA?” I thought about his question and what I accepted as day to day business he considered unusual. In the day of free agency with NFL, MLB, NHL and yes the NBA, basketball continues to have the most player movement. I didn’t have an answer then but informed him this was my best guess. In the NFL, a team can acquire an All-Pro QB but if the team’s offensive line is not top notch or it’s receivers have stone hands…you get the idea I hope.

An All-Star caliber starting pitcher can be acquired by a team driving toward a pennant but consider this fact, he can only pitch every 4 days. These are probably poor examples however in the NBA it’s been my contention that one or two key players acquired in a trade could allow that team to win an NBA Championship. Now it certainly doesn’t often occur however the point is simple, one or two basketball players might affect the outcome of an NBA season over his NFL or MLB brethren. I am offering not one shred of proof just a theory by me, what do you think? Is there something else I may have missed that might be the contributing factor for so many NBA trades?

A substantial number

You read here weeks ago that 91-year old Hubie Brown will close out a historic career February 9, as analyst for ESPN. I thought it would be interesting to look back at some of the players he coached and the others he covered during NBA broadcasts. I guess we could begin with Artis Gilmore, Brown coached Gilmore while head coach of the ABA Kentucky Colonels. As an assistant with the Bucks it was Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Oscar Robertson and Bobby Dandridge. With the Knicks it was Bernard King and Paul Westphal, and more recently it was the Grizzlies Pau Gasol.

All those mentioned are in the Naismith Hall of Fame some in the College Basketball Hall, those named are but a small number of players Brown coached over his career. The players he’s witnessed play during his broadcast career beginning in 1985 is astronomical. Larry Bird to Magic Johnson to Patrick Ewing to Kevin Garnett to Kobe Bryant to Victor Wembanyama. Of the names Wemby is the only one without Hall of Fame credentials at least for now. Naturally covering such a large expanse of time there are a considerable number of players I failed to list. I wanted to provide you just a thumbnail sketch Hubie Brown has either coached or broadcast the games over his brilliant career in basketball (1968-2025).

It was Magic and then it wasn’t

Earvin “Magic” Johnson changed the basketball world for us, no one had ever seen a 6 foot 9 (205.74 cm) point guard. He was taller than most of the small forwards of the period and could eyeball most power forwards. Despite his height and weight he was adept at passing the basketball. It was often said “Keep your head up on a fast break because a pass might hit you in the back of the head.” That is the primary reason he was nicknamed “Magic,” his ability to handle the basketball plus pass it was extraordinary. He was the man until Kobe Bean Bryant arrived in 1996, he stood 6 foot 6 inches (198.12 cm) and 212 pounds.

He was a shooter, however, that didn’t appear to be his forte, in a vital playoff series early in his career this occurred. During a crucial portion of a playoff game against the Jazz Kobe shot two consecutive air balls, that incident probably caused him to focus on becoming the best he could be. If you looked up the term “work ethic” next to it would be a photo of Kobe. How driven was he, to a point many said, “He wasn’t a very good teammate,” he probably anticipated to his detriment everyone was as driven as he was. Kobe said, “I arrive in the gym early to begin my routine,” this teammate came in around 7:00 a.m., it turned out he was late, number 24 had been in the building since 5:30. Yes, Kobe replaced Magic for me as the greatest Laker ever.

This is the 3^Rd re-write 

I’m going to blend three separately written Laker story’s, I hope they fuse. I’ll begin with Luka, he’s one of those names a last name is not required. You say his name and everyone who follows the NBA is aware of who you are about to discuss. The Battle of Los Angeles on Tuesday evening was more a skirmish, I’m unsure what I witnessed. No AD for the Lakers, the Clippers at their home all the elements said the Lakers were in for a tough game. That’s what it read prior to game start, that’s not what occurred, I use the term beat down literally, final score Lakers 122 Clippers 97. LeBron led the way with timely scoring and 9 assists, Austin Reaves also totaled 9 assists. Rui Hachimura and Reaves added 20 points each but it was the defense, I will say it again…defense.

The Lakers played belly button defense which forced the Clippers into numerous TO’s and ill-advised shots from the floor. Am I expecting this type of game every evening from the Lakers, of course I am. Although the Lakers played Tuesday evening Luka is not scheduled to play until tomorrow, what should I expect? Better yet, what are Laker teammates expecting? LeBron is averaging 9.1 assists a game, Luka was averaging nearly 8 assists for the Mavs, are you walking with me? Can I say Laker teammates better have their heads up and on a swivel with these two skillful assist talents. Speaking of which Mark Williams is reported to be a lob king, this is his story, I arose from my sleep on Thursday morning my iPhone indicated the Lakers had acquired Mark Williams. I immediately thought Robert Williams Blazers center, after turning on the television much to my surprise I discovered it was the other Williams. A check was required because the former Hornets center was unknown to me, sure he played at Duke I just don’t remember him. In any event the 7 foot 240 pound Williams was pick number 15 in 2022, he’s 23-years old and left Duke after his sophomore year. I am forced to admit because the Hornets are not on national television broadcasts I am totally unfamiliar with his game.

Williams will become a “watch and learn” Laker for me, he will be plugged in at the center position immediately. His numbers for the Hornets look good however I must take into consideration that Williams is now a Laker. One, because I originally had the wrong Williams and two no familiarity I had to return to the 2022 NBA Mock Draft to discover what scouts wrote. The negatives, his missed games due to nagging injuries. He’s not a shot creator but is that really important with LeBron and Luka. Finally he’s not a three-point threat which is great from my standpoint. I absolutely hate 7-footers standing at the 3-point line jacking up shots, with that said here is the Lakers projected starting lineup:

Did you realize prior to 1973 the name Jalen whatever method you spell it never existed? Jalen Rose former NBA and current broadcaster is the first, his mom used his dad’s name Jimmy and uncle Leonard. She combined the two names and that’s how Jalen came about. If we fast forward to 2021 we find there 32 athletes in the NBA or NFL with the name spelled in different variants. In addition to that another 30 athletes in North America also have the name. As further evidence the Super Bowl will have Jaylen Hurts playing QB for the Eagles and the Chiefs have DB Jaylen Watson on their roster. Recently the Lakers traded Jalen Hood-Schifino to the Jazz and the Pistons have Jalen Duren while the Knicks have Jalen Brunson. I could take this much further however you get the idea, we have quite a name thing here spread throughout the NBA, NFL and other sports.

If you are regular reader 5 out of 7 days of the week you read my opinion on a variety of basketball subjects. Whether it was yesterday or 5 years ago I have always attempted to remain consistent in one aspect. I’ve voiced my opinion however I don’t believe it was ever stated mine was the only one. Some of you might be familiar with the name Jason Whitlock, this paraphrases the media members take on the Luka Doncic trade. “David Stern (former commissioner) is rolling over in his grave.

This trade should be immediately voided as Stern did with Chris Paul.” A little background, we must return to 2011. That year saw the Lakers receive the 27-year old point guard in a trade, Stern would void the trade because at the time the Hornets were being run by the NBA. Technically as owner the NBA said no to the exchange on the basis “It was best for the league.” It doesn’t matter if Whitlock approved of the Luka trade or not someone should point out to him this is not the same circumstance. I wonder if anyone reading Whitlock believes him anymore…just a question on my part?

I must come to the realization I hold grudges, didn’t think I did but I do. In this instance it’s Bill Self, I’ve never held any animosity toward any of the players even the Rock Chalk crowd it’s the coach. Allow a brief explanation, a return to the past, the administration at Missouri was concerned about the disproportion amount of funds allocated to each sports program. The University of Texas because its Texas received a larger share of revenue over other schools, this concern eventually led Missouri to leave the Big XII.

Rather than understanding the move Self developed an attitude which I long believed was unnecessary. Missouri and Kansas now play a home and home series back then Self said an emphatic NO. Evidently Missouri was not the only school displeased, for unknown reasons Nebraska and Colorado left the Big XII prior to Missouri. Although Self refused to schedule Missouri there was no problem playing the other two schools one in the Pac-10 and the other in the Big 10.

Tomorrow evening you will hear a familiar voice if you tune into the Duke-Clemson game. 85-year old color commentator Dick Vitale will be providing analysis for the game. As most are aware health issues have sidelined the former coach and broadcaster. I look forward to his wealth of terminology that belong exclusively to him. As a reminder of just a few Vitale-isms, Cooper Flagg is definitely a “Diaper Dandy”-a freshman. We also have “Dishes the rock”-a pass, “P.T”-playing time, “Slam, Bam, Jam”-an impressive dunk. The terms mentioned are just a few of the expressions of the man who placed college basketball in the forefront for us from his days ESPN first began broadcasting back in 1979.

From the Mavs perspective

I cannot place myself in the mind of the Mavs GM Nico Harrison, that’s an impossible task. He made the trade sending Luka Doncic to the Lakers so everything else becomes second guessing on our part. Most of all AD receives what he desired from the Lakers…a position change. Of course he probably would have preferred it be with the Lakers. If you’ve followed the Lakers any length of time you are aware AD has long desired to play power forward exclusively.

In 2020 when the team won the championship Dwight Howard and JaVale McGee shared the post. Unlike the Lakers the Mavs already have a Bonafide center in Daniel Gafford so AD gets his wish. As for other areas I briefly touched on this Monday, point guard duties become the sole responsibility of Kyrie Irving now. You might remember this responsibility had been shared with Luka Doncic. They also have PJ Washington at power forward and Klay Thompson shooting guard, the reserves are workable. The standings as this is written indicate they would make the play-in tournament, they are within range of the number 8 position. This morning sports news contained a photo of Mavs fans in front of American Airlines Center protesting the trade by bringing a coffin. Rest assured a large contingent of Mavs fans are complaining about the trade.  

I’ve yet to read a negative comment emanating from Los Angeles…what’s that about? There is speculation on who won this trade, for me it’s a draw. Until the Mavs or Lakers win an NBA Championship it will be difficult to determine who won what. In closing several mentioned Mark Cuban’s name, evidently they fail to realize there has been a change. Although he remains associated with the Mavs he no longer is a decision maker, he was in no position to void the trade.

Beauty contest

If it’s only a beauty contest why is it so important…because it’s a barometer that informs the general public where a team ranks. The public pays little attention to the NET or KenPom polls, they see the AP and Coaches poll because that’s the focus of local sports. This all might change by next Monday, with that statement out of the way at least this week the AP Poll places Mizzou in the number 15 slot, the Coaches Poll have them at 16.

As for Kansas basketball the AP has them at 16 and 17 in the Coaches Poll. I’m a little unsure the years Mizzou beat Kansas they were ever ahead of them in the polls. It might be different next time but for week 14 the numbers above represent the views of those in the media (AP) and basketball coaches throughout the nation. Just in case you wondered I am going to save your search, the NET ranking places Kansas at 9 and Mizzou 21. KenPom has Kansas as the number 10 team in the nation and Mizzou number 23. In any event the hope is that two or three additional victories will assure Mizzou is able to punch it’s ticket to the Big Dance.

Contrary to some the sky is not falling

The sky is not falling, the NBA is not going out of business next week or next year. A legion of naysayers have attempted to give us that impression. They loudly proclaim TV viewership is down…I haven’t looked at the numbers but I have no reason to doubt that. Seems as though this development occurred in the past, remember in the ‘60’s when the league was ripe with drug problems and racial issues. Along comes Magic Johnson and Larry Bird to save the NBA, this upward trend continued on through the period of MJ and his Bulls.

Viewership numbers went through the roof, expansion occurred…new television contracts etc. As for television how did the NBA manage to secure a multi-billion dollar television contract going into effect next season? Why would the networks pay those kind of dollars for a product “nobody” is watching? Question, can these naysayers tell me why folks with deep, deep pockets are always ready to purchase an NBA franchise when it becomes available? There is a court fight currently between the current owner of the Wolves and perspective owner, NBA ownership is a “cash cow.” In closing I’m going to turn to another sport the NFL. All season long, coast to coast we’ve listened to and read complaints regarding NFL officiating.

Some of the critics have even claimed (without offering proof) NFL games are rigged. Despite the complaints we’ve heard from September up till now I’ve not read a single fan claim “I ain’t watching no more football” have you? It would be foolish for me to claim there are no NBA issues they do exist, they also exist with the NFL, MLB and the NHL. I truly hope no one reading this believes everything is okay to me regarding the NBA.

The return of the Big Man

There is a belief literally everything on earth is in a cycle. The thing whatever it might be is brand new or has been in use for a time, it’s generally accepted by most consumers. It becomes antiquated or outdated and is no longer in use. What happens, years later it returns maybe in a different “package” or form. I was holding a discussion with a co-worker and his question to me, “Will the Big Man ever return to basketball?” I certainly don’t believe I am in a position to answer the question although I provided him a guess. “I said yes, but post play will probably not resemble that of Shaquille O’Neal.”

For some who might not be familiar Shaq played bully ball, with his 350 pound frame he’d back opposing centers toward the basket and simply overpower them with a mammoth dunk. I said, “Guys haven’t quit growing as evidence of that fact I could point toward Wemby.” One of the changes that’s resulted in   lesser post play is the three point shot, coaches encourage their Big Men to take the shot which I hate. On the other hand if you can shoot it like Wemby or Brook Lopez so be it. Steph Curry and to a lesser degree Klay Thompson are the culprits. The Splash Brothers routinely took the shot and sunk it…what occurred? They won championships and other NBA teams began copying the Warriors effort hoping to duplicate the magic. This was not what was to be published

I trashed the story intended to be published, it dealt with Anthony Davis and his role on the Lakers but that is no longer required since he’s been traded. On Saturday evening I along with members of Laker Nation were treated to a thrilling 128-112 victory over the Knicks, the game was played in MSG no less. I awoke Sunday morning with news of a blockbuster trade that sent AD to the Mavs for Luka Doncic. There are others involved, however, for our purpose these two are the keys to the trade.

After catching my breath I decided to go over the trade as I see it. The pause on my part was to collect MY thoughts without being influenced by the talking heads of ESPN and others. What you are about to read are my thoughts and views, I cannot say they cover all the issues however they are not influenced by anyone. It’s possible you might note a thing or two I missed, that’s okay. With that here goes, Age-Lakers advantage Doncic is a veteran but turns 26-years old this month, AD will turn 32 in March. Offense-for me this is a draw, both athletes skill set offensively is at or near the same level although Doncic has point guard skill. Defense-Mavs are receiving a player who earns votes for DPOY annually. Doncic as talented as he is only an average defender. Conditioning-this is a draw for these reasons, AD is always suffering knick-knack injuries as Shaq might say. They have kept him out of the lineup for periods of time. One of the knocks on Doncic is the issue of conditioning, it’s reported he fails in this department.

Intangibles-This is the most difficult area in advance of seeing both on the court in the same jersey. Will there be a problem on the court assuming LeBron remains the court leader? I believed there might be a problem with point guard Kyrie Irving added to the Mavs but he and Doncic appeared to blend their game, can the same occur for the Lakers? What remains-The Lakers have a bunch of moving parts but no genuine center, that must be addressed soon, we guess that might soon be resolved. As for the long term it would appear Doncic should have 10 more productive years, AD at most 5-6 years. In this regard it would appear the Lakers are the overall winner in the trade acquiring a franchise player prior to LeBron retiring.   

Another trade

De’Aaron Fox moving in a three team trade is not a blockbuster but it is interesting, nonetheless. Fox had made it known to Kings management he wanted out. In addition his destination turns out to be San Antonio and becoming a teammate of Wemby, the question now how is this trade going to affect the Spurs going forward. Fox is listed as a point guard but is really more a combo guard, does he move true point guard Chris Paul? What about Stephon Castle who moved into the starting lineup at the shooting guard, he is also more a combo guard. It will be interesting to see how this eventually works out due to another rumor, the possibility of Paul heading to the Lakers.

Bits n Pieces 

Ja Morant of the Grizzlies is ineligible for any post season honors, of course my statement excludes an NBA Championship. I am reminding some of you that the NBA now has in place a qualification number, I’m not picking on Morant it was noted by an ESPN article. Every athlete must play a minimum 65 games, unless they meet the number they are not eligible for any post-season honors. From where I sit it’s fair, I am unable to name a name however I’m sure it occurred in the past. An athlete playing less games than stipulated but rewarded with an NBA honor. I’m not attempting to take anything away from any player, games played should be a qualification number.

I’m sure there will be other similar moves but to my knowledge this is the first name I’m aware of. In anticipation of broadcast changes It was announced Reggie Miller will leave his duties at TNT after the 2024-25 season is complete. He will begin working for NBC Universal in its NBA coverage for the 2025-26 season. Of course you were aware earlier of this news, the TNT ensemble Inside the NBA will move to ESPN with the departure of TNT as an NBA broadcast partner.

Anytime a discussion on Duke basketball occurs this season it begins with Cooper Flagg. Of course it’s likely Flagg will be the first draft choice in the June NBA Draft. From there the conversation probably moves to freshman guard Kon Knueppel, it’s possible but unlikely freshman Khaman Maluach will be mentioned. Maluach is a “raw” 7 foot 2 250 pound center originally from South Sudan, he attended the NBA Academy Africa before heading for the U.S. and Duke. Despite his limited play don’t be shocked to hear his name in the June draft should he declare. 

Is the NBA in the future for Mexico?

The question of Mexico City in the NBA is just that…a question. Adam Silver commissioner of the NBA has mentioned expansion and three cities have been in the conversation Seattle, Las Vegas and Mexico City. I’ve gone back and forth on this issue and to be quite honest I’m unsure if the NBA is headed south of the continental United States. Unlike our northern neighbor Canada basketball is not the attraction in Mexico City, soccer (football), boxing and baseball appear to be the sports of choice. I make this statement despite the fact the NBA has regularly scheduled games in Mexico City. As for developing talent perhaps Karim Lopez might be the future for Mexican basketball.

Lopez has been profiled previously but just in case you may have missed the account this one is new. He’s a 203.2 cm (6 foot 8) 97 kg (213 pound) small forward, despite the fact he’s only 17-years old Lopez has international experience. He’s played for the New Zealand Breakers in the NBL for two seasons and says his ultimate dream one day is to play in the NBA. Lopez will not be available until 2026 so I decided to check several mock draft sites. Due to the fact we are discussing 2026 I could only locate one mock site nbadraftroom.com, this site has Lopez ranked in the number 12 position. Lopez was born and grew up in Hermosillo a city of 800,000 in the northwest portion of the nation. From this point forward hopefully we can attempt to track the progress of Lopez and follow his footsteps as he contends to play in the NBA.

En Fuego  

Mizzou sprinted out to an early lead against Mississippi State, because they were on the road I’d hoped the Tigers would get off to a smooth start, however the Bulldogs came back at a point and tied the game. The Bulldogs went ahead at the 12:36 mark taking a 13-12 lead. From that point until the final buzzer it was all Mizzou as the Tigers conducted a shooting clinic shooting 55% from the floor and a sizzling 46.9% from three. The Bulldogs made an effort but it was clear the Tigers were the better team. The keys to victory, the sharp shooting by the Tigers plus outrebounding the opposition were the keys to the 88-61 victory over the Bulldogs.

Caleb Grill emerged from the bench and led the Tigers in scoring, he’s become coach Gate’s secret weapon. It was Grill with 20 points, shooting 54.5% from three aiding the cause of these Tigers. What’s next you asked, how about a trip to the University of Tennessee? Whether we desire it or not we have another SEC powerhouse team to contend with. I must admit my surprise, there was no method ahead of time to believe Mizzou men’s would be this good. This has been my theory all season long, “Win all your home games and steal two or three on the road.” I believe this Mizzou win on the road could be considered a steal and it sure would be great for two or three more victories away from home. In closing I can say Mizzou played almost a perfect game from start to finish.

Wow

The Spurs smacked around the Bucks 144 to 118 on Friday evening, if you remember I don’t have NBA League Pass. In addition the game was not available on many of the NBA’s family of networks, what you about to read is based on the box score only. I should mention the highlights were available however I am prohibited from providing a link to them. On hearing the score it was a real shocker for a number of reasons, how in the world did the Bucks give up that many points was my initial thought?

Well for one thing it was the Doc Rivers factor, no forget that for now. It was Wemby and his teammates who subdued the Bucks, he led the way scoring 30 points however the other four starters scored double figures. In addition to that Keldon Johnson came off the Spurs bench contributing 24 points to his team’s victory. I know you tire of hearing this however Wemby had a monster game, 30 points 14 rebounds along with 6 blocked shots. We are watching this youngsters continued NBA growth right in front of us. As for my Rivers quote I continue to believe the Bucks coaching ability is highly overrated.

Too much basketball…but I love it!

Weekends especially Saturdays, I find games I want to see often play at the same time. If not the same time they often overlap the case for Baylor-Kansas. I was busy helping Mizzou beat Mississippi State, I changed channels on occasion checking on the score. The last time I checked I’m unsure of the number however Kansas appeared to be clearly in the lead. Perhaps based on that I “forgot” until an hour or so past the time the game should have ended.

I was shocked when I discovered the final score, realizing the game was home for Baylor they must have come storming back. The final score read Baylor 81 Kansas 70 but what occurred during the time I missed? The Jayhawks outshot the Baylor Bears however the rest of the story is quite interesting, consider this fact Baylor trailed 40-21 at the half. Kansas had a 19 point half-time lead how does a team lose that huge a lead? Amazingly easy apparently because they gave up 60 points to the Bears. This was a road game for number 11 Kansas so the loss is partially understandable. As for the inconsistent play once again the pre-season number one team in the nation provides us proof can you say it…overrated.

I saw a recent interview with Zion Williamson of the Pelicans, perhaps you may have seen it too. Williamson has a checkered NBA career in and out of the lineup routinely. He made the following statement “I could play in back-to-back games but I WORK for the Pelicans.” He went on to detail the front office view of his health and his statement landed in a strange place for me. It’s impossible to determine what someone might be thinking, of course I'm speaking for myself. 

If you have the ability to read moods so be it, the rest of us can only make a judgement by their words we hear from the person. Notice Williamson said I work for the Pelicans rather than I play for the Pelicans, for me one word signifies I am an employee the other word says I am part of something. Only Williamson knows for sure what he meant in his statement but to me it sure it sounded as if he was saying “I want out New Orleans.” On the other hand maybe I’m the guilty party, perhaps I’m trying to read between the lines. Williamson might not be where I’m projecting him…what are your thoughts?

There remains time

Recently I looked at several Scary Teams, those teams who are poised for this season or simply stated teams the opposition hates to see on the schedule. The majority of these NBA teams are loaded with youthful talent, on the other hand we have those not playing up to par. These teams were to contend and we find them performing with less than stellar records. At the top of the list must be the Sixers, they were expected to contend in the East this season. A sizable portion of their poor play can be attributed to Joel Embiid and Paul George being in and out of the lineup.

I must also include the Bucks and Heat in this discussion, I’m unsure regarding the Bucks except for Doc Rivers. As for the Heat there is a Jimmy Butler problem as the balance of the roster attempts to figure out who they are. The Hawks always seem to hover around the .500 level, they never get any better or worse. That takes care of many of the Eastern Conference underperforming teams, what about the West? It’s just as real there as well, I’m going to begin with the mystery Nuggets. The dilemma, why with all that talent on hand they are also underperforming for the most part. If the season ended as this is written the Wolves barely make the playoffs in 8th place. Ant Man alone cannot keep this team playing at a high skill level, he does need his teammates to play slightly better.

The King of all teams in the West maybe in the league is the Suns, money alone fails to address their issue(s). Consider this fact the Suns have the highest payroll in the NBA. There is a safety valve for all the teams mentioned, the Lakers from two seasons ago. To refresh your memory they were thrashing around under .500 but eventually righted the ship and earned a playoff berth. There remains hope for all the underperforming teams mentioned in this account. If one of the teams is a favorite keep your outlook high for them to succeed.

Free pass days are over

This is a revisit of an earlier story, this past week radio guy was blabbing on and on about Kansas basketball. His guest represented one of the local publications and this is what occurred. After radio guy came to a stop and listened he heard this. “Kansas might be the third best team in the Big XII, right now its Houston then Iowa State and finally Kansas.” In my mind I could see radio guy anxious to counter his argument however there was nothing for him to offer after his guest finished.

Look friends I continue to believe Kansas basketball at least this season is overrated, maybe they will catch fire in mid to late February and prove me wrong I don’t think so. It’s my belief they are a superior team to the majority of the conference but not “Kansas elite.” Wanna know why…. barely beating UCF 91-87. This is not intended to disparage UCF however they went into the game with a 4-4 conference record and almost won. Props to them the game was played at home which favored them but it was more than that factor. Kansas basketball is affiliated with radio guy so maybe that’s part of the basis for his inability to see the issues other eyes see.

The Spurs have made several moves over the course of their existence but never left the State of Texas. In 1967 the Dallas Chaparrals would become an original member of the American Basketball Association. Due to poor attendance a decision was made for the Texas Chaparrals to begin playing a regional schedule, games would be played in Fort Worth, Lubbock and Dallas. This proved to be a failure and in 1971-72 they returned to Dallas exclusively playing in two locations.

The team would be placed on the market and a group of San Antonio businessmen purchased the team and moved it there in 1973 under a conditional agreement. Once the move was made and it proved to be a success there was no thought of moving back to Dallas. There might be an assumption the Mavs may have been the driving force for the move to San Antonio however that was not the case. The merger or expansion between the ABA and NBA took place in 1976, the Mavs did not begin play until the 1980-81 season.

He is a character

Dan Hurley’s gone from two-time NCAA Championship winning coach to Mr. Obnoxious in the eyes of many. Maybe his on the court behavior is his personality all along and we just didn’t recognize it. In any event, in some eyes he earns more ire from fans than his players. Make no mistake this is no effort to denigrate Hurley I love the passion he displays on the court, we must face the fact UConn is not as good as pre-season projections. They are nowhere close to dominating the Big East Conference, truth is the Huskies are sitting in 4th place as this is written.

Hurley and UConn find themselves looking up toward first place Marquette then St. John’s and finally Creighton. The Huskies have won 15 games, which is not terrible however that’s way beneath the standard established by Hurley. I’m going to give the coach a pass on this one for a number of reasons chief among them attrition. Most believe it would be extremely difficult to duplicate last year’s numbers. Despite this fact the Huskies were expected to compete and several roster members have not played at the expected level. Finally the largest factor might be growth by other programs i.e., Marquette, St. John’s and others, these teams are much improved over last season. If you are a Hurley Hater don’t get comfortable thinking this is a permanent change for UConn, it ain’t.

Prime destinations

Every athlete whether it’s trade or free agency is headed to Los Angeles, New York or Chicago, there are other prime destinations in the NBA. Besides the three cities above it’s my contention we must now add San Antonio to the list. I wouldn’t have written this 4-5 years ago but now it’s real, the question becomes what occurred in the intervening years…my contention the Wemby factor. Yes, the opportunity to join the Spurs and Victor Wembanyama is real and is likely to continue.

Consider this fact, the Kings DeAron Fox has requested the team trade him. The reported destination of choice for Fox the Spurs. Of course this move and others in the future are predicated on Wemby remaining healthy enduring the NBA wars. Next time you read or hear of a player deciding to cast his lot with the Spurs remember the why. This next statement is a guess on my part but I’m sure veterans Harrison Barnes and Chris Paul could have chosen another destination. Those two might have been the first “Wemby factor” moves by NBA veterans

As a member of Laker Nation I have attempted to refrain commentary regarding Bronny James. If you care, you might check back to what I wrote weeks and days before the NBA Draft. He needed additional play at the college level, I thought that would be accomplished based on the school he was reported to be transferring to. There were two factors here, first USC was not a good team, on top of that due to his health issues he played all of the season as a reserve. Then it occurred he announced his declaration for the 2024 draft, second round draft choices generally don’t have lasting NBA careers. A second round pick wouldn’t necessarily be a waste.

What I wanted did not come about, I wanted Bronny to spend extensive time in the G-League. Bronny is bounced back and forth between the parent club and the South Bay Lakers, currently he’s with the Lakers. On Tuesday night against the Sixers Bronny was inserted into the lineup and the results were certainly underwhelming, 0-5 from the floor and 0-3 from the three line. I claim no expertise in reading body language but I do have a concern, whether it was nervousness or something else Bronny did not appear comfortable in his 15 minutes on the court. In addition there were three TO’s in his time on the court. How about the future for the youngster, I’m afraid that is far too difficult a task for me because it would be pure speculation on my part. There might be factors in place I am unaware.

A YouTube channel Sports Reels presented its list of the Top 5 NBA point guards all-time. They are:

It’s not mine but I take issue with their projected list of all-time greats. Allow me to explain, I love me some Steph Curry but to surpass point guard Magic Johnson, that’s a stretch for me! The narration saying, “Curry is a better shooter than Magic.” We have two players from different eras, one (Curry) more a shooter over a passer (Magic). Truth is in my view Curry and Westbrook are more combo guards than true point guards. In addition they left the NBA’s all-time assist leader John Stockton off their list.

Look around you…it’s clear

Those of us in the continental United States have heard plenty of complaints. Before I began allow me to state up front I am not the one complaining. I believe the influx of foreign athletes to the NBA makes it that much better, we have a substantial number of talented youth arriving attending American colleges or beginning play in the NBA. The question might be asked how did the landscape of amateur and professional basketball change, that’s an easy answer…the NBA.

Euro players arrive on these shores playing for European teams, the same could be said about a number arriving from nations on the African continent. What is the change I speak of, well there is the NBA Global Academy. This training facility is located in Canberra Australia, Josh Giddey of the Bulls became the first athlete from the academy to be drafted in the NBA. We also have the NBA Academy Africa located in Slay Senegal, this facility is also intended to train youth in basketball skills. Also there is NBA Academy Latin America, it's located in San Luis Potosi about a 5 hour drive north of the capital of Mexico City. School studies are also provided to attendees.

Most haunted franchise

This was a topic of discussion on one of ESPN’s family of channels this morning. The most haunted franchise in sports, almost always having good teams but just not good enough to win a championship. One caller suggested it was the NFL Cowboys another said the baseball Brewers, a third mentioned the NFL Bills. One caller claimed the team’s got to be the Los Angeles Clippers, before reading this is not intended to be 100% complete however it’s as accurate as possible from memory. 

Steve Ballmer one of the richest persons in the world now owns the Clippers. Teams on occasion change ownership, the Clippers are one of the rarest professional teams, the former owner was fired. The NBA literally forced Donald Sterling out of business due to racist remarks he’d made but that might have been the final detail. Perhaps a portion of this is the manner the team arrived in Los Angeles. After relocating from Buffalo to San Diego owner Sterling decided to move the team, understand this Sterling moved the team to Los Angeles without NBA approval. The Clippers were a poorly run franchise in those days almost always a loser. Then a change did come about, how it occurred I’m unsure but it did.

The Clippers became contenders but always managed to come up short, from the Lob City crew going forward they were good even better some years than the Lakers. Steve Ballmer decided to build him a palatial sports arena and to get out from under the shadow of the Lakers. We are in the middle of the 2024-25 season and the Clippers record is good, is it good enough to contend for a championship? If at some future date they win an NBA Championship I could no longer consider them the most haunted franchise in professional sports. 

Bits n Pieces  

Checking most NBA Mock Draft sites immediately behind Cooper Flagg are two Rutgers players, Dylan Harper (son of former NBA player) Ron and Ace Bailey. A basketball team is more than two members of the roster however these two have me scratching my head. As this is written the Scarlet Knights have a 10-10 record and 3 wins and 6 losses in the conference. I’ve only seen bits and pieces of Rutgers however check this out, Harper is scoring at an 18.6 point per game while Bailey is 19.8 points. Wonderful things were expected from these 5 star freshman and I’m unsure of what might be the issue.

As this is written it appears there are four teams capable of drafting Duke’s Cooper Flagg. Of course this is not set in stone and the team with the worst won-loss record is not guaranteed the top pick in the draft. Based on the current standings the Jazz, Pelicans, Blazers and Spurs will have an opportunity to choose Flagg in the June draft. Should the pick fall to the Spurs it will prove quite interesting. Drafting Wemby two years ago and adding Flagg to the roster for next season. Of course this is pure speculation on my part however it could occur.

Are the Lakers improved with JJ Redick as head coach over last season? Consider this first, two games were postponed due to the tragic fires in the Los Angeles metro. With that in mind, last season the Lakers were at .500 with a 24-24 record. This season they have 26 wins versus 18 losses so consider this fact. Worst case scenario If they lose both games their record would be 26-20.

Mizzou will earn an invitation to the NCAA Tournament this year unless the roof falls in. As this is written I am unable to project injury which might ultimately be the decider, in the meantime check this out. The rankings beginning January 27 place Mizzou on the top end as the number 30 team in the nation, on the low end at 21. Here are the rankings, AP 25, Coaches 21, NET 25 and KenPom 30. This presents evidence Mizzou basketball is light years above that of last season. Are these Tigers capable of beating the Tigers from Auburn for conference supremacy?  Gary Parrish of CBS Sports claims “This Missouri team The is better than NC State last season, if you remember NC State was a Final Four team.

Name, Image & Likeness

As I see it, there is no requirement for you to agree with me. When I first heard of NIL, I was concerned my thought was simple, these athletes being paid makes them pros. Then I began to think over past events that affected college athletes. I’m unsure how the conversation began but I held a discussion with an acquaintance who played college football. Keep in mind this fact, Jim played football at a Division II program.

He informed me from time to time he’d open his locker and there would be a wad of cash, no note or any clue where the money came from. Keep in mind Jim’s was a small Division II school, imagine what boosters might provide a Michigan or Alabama player. It was said without offering any proof UCLA basketball dominated back in the day because players were “steered” to the schools with money promises. Howard Porter was not paid while at Villanova however he’d signed a professional contract with an ABA team, this would have made him ineligible and his school. Years later when the news was finally revealed Villanova had to forfeit its 1971 NCAA Championship. Coach Larry Brown at Kansas had a player with a family emergency, he needed to fly home. The student-athlete didn’t have the airfare so Brown reached into his pocket and gave the player money for the flight home. Later when the incident was uncovered Kansas basketball was hit with a penalty and placed on probation.

Finally we close this out with the Ed O’Bannon story, after playing for UCLA he discovered his likeness on a video game. Despite the manufacturer making millions off the resemblance O’Bannon hadn’t received a penny. O’Bannon filed a lawsuit against the NCAA and EA Sports. EA Sports settled with O’Bannon for $15 million dollars which might lead one to assume a hefty sum must have gone in the coffers of EA Sports. For those who believe NIL money will ruin football and basketball it was already there…it just wasn’t visible

It’s far too early to determine

AJ Dybantsa had no games scheduled therefore he took the opportunity to fly to Paris last week. Imagine that a 17-year old flying to Europe on his own money, that’s what NIL will do for you. That’s a story for another time and place, what was the purpose? Dybantsa made the trip to see the NBA Paris Games and mentioned he was thrilled with the play of Wemby, more on that later. He’s headed to BYU in the fall for his freshman year.

In case you might not be aware Dybantsa has been mentioned as the top draft pick in the June 2026 NBA Draft by several mock draft sites. The 6 foot 9 Dybantsa indicates “I want to play with Wemby” however exciting as that might sound there are several issues that might prevent that from occurring. We are attempting to determine the order of the 2025 draft, no one has entertained who might draft Dybantsa if he is available. It’s possible he could be available when it’s time for the Spurs pick. Second or maybe first, we need to determine if he’s got an NBA game, we believe he does however there is no guarantee of that as a fact.

What is the issue?

I’m unsure of the why, former NBA players such as Gilbert Arenas manage to push my buttons with his takes. I can now add Paul Pierce to the list based on his podcast statement. I’m paraphrasing his comment but he indicated the Suns should trade Kevin Durant to the Thunder for Chet Holmgren. No such trade has been mentioned except by Paul’s assertion. This is the basis for his trade, he claims the Thunder haven’t really missed the injured Holmgren in the lineup, he played the first 10 games and that’s been it. According to Pierce you can plug Durant into the structure of the Thunder easily or something similar. What’s wrong with this trade, plenty in my mind.

There are championship aspirations by the Thunder for this season no doubt…but. Durant is now 36 (37 years old in September), Holmgren is 22 years old. This is no criticism of Durant he remains one of the NBA’s greats but what team even one chasing a championship trade a 22 year old for a player about to turn 37. Thunder GM Sam Presti has been running the team since the Seattle days, does Pierce think Presti’s going to all of a sudden become excited about Durant? Some might remember Durant was originally drafted by the Sonics and moved to Oklahoma when the franchise relocated there. This is the second bizarre thing expressed by Pierce, he suggested Hollywood should make a movie about LaVar Ball based on the story two sons becoming NBA players…what!

The standings

If you check the college basketball standings on Sunday January 26 they look peculiar. For the first time in recent memory Missouri basketball is outstanding compared to that being played in Lawrence Kansas, what you just read is distressing to fans of Jayhawk Nation. After Saturday’s action Kansas has 14 wins and 5 losses, they have 5 wins and 3 losses in the Big XII. Across Stateline Road and 150 miles down Interstate 70 lies Columbia home of the Tigers. Currently their record is 16 wins and 4 losses, they are 5 wins up and 2 down in the SEC.

Not only do the Tigers have a better won-loss record they also have a victory over their border neighbors. Understand this on December 8 these same Tigers beat the Jayhawks 76-67, could the Missouri victory have occurred in Lawrence…probably not but it wasn’t played there. The weekly poll will be out by the time this is read, currently Kansas is 12 in the AP Poll and 11 in the Coaches Poll. As for Missouri they sat at 22 and 24. After Missouri’s upset victory over Ole Miss and the Kansas loss to Houston how will the polls appear for the border teams? It seems Kansas has “magic” with voters so I have doubts they drop extremely far, as for Missouri a question exists will they rise significantly?

The sports fan

This definition comes from vocabulary.com: “an enthusiastic devotee of sports,” synonyms: fan, rooter.” That’s a bland definition from reality because most sports fans live vicariously through the wins and losses of their favorites. They cannot get enough discussion with their friends and acquaintances or listening to radio and television mention of their favorite team. When reviewing the team “they” is often exchanged for “we” as if the individual is on the team’s roster. The most difficult role of fandom is to remain faithful especially during difficult periods of time.

I could use me as an example, my (notice the possession) Lakers won back to back NBA Championships in 2009 and 2010. From that point up to 2020 was quite trying as they always fell short of the mark. Laker Nation is experiencing a similar experience each season since that championship, we have found them lacking the ultimate prize. What occurs for Laker Nation and me, nothing changes, we are disappointed but continue to love our team despite the downturn. What takes place for Laker Nation in 2025, I have no idea. I hope June will see them crowned NBA Champions however if that fails to occur I will remain that…a fan and member of Laker Nation. I believe I can place myself in the realm of “rabid fan.”

“Build it and they will come”

The headline is from the 1989 Kevin Costner movie classic, the shorten version of the story his character built a baseball diamond on his farm. The “Build it they will come” belief no longer exists for a variety of reasons. Last spring voters in Jackson County Missouri rejected plans for a downtown Royals baseball stadium and renovated Chiefs Arrowhead. Here me, opposition not only exists in Kansas City and Jackson County but all over. Remember the Sixers and their desire for a downtown arena, it’s coming but not in downtown Philly. It’s going to be eventually built near the existing Wells Fargo Center which is south of the planned location.

In San Antonio there appears to be no boisterous opposition to a new arena only of the quiet variety, allow an explanation. Once again the plan is for a downtown Spurs arena to replace Frost Bank Center, the present arena was opened in 2002 however the Wemby factor is part of this effort. One of the Bexar commissioners said this, “What’s to become of Frost Bank, will it sit in a manner similar to the Alamodome?” For those unfamiliar with the story the Alamodome was built with the hope San Antonio would eventually become home to an NFL team, that never came. The building served as home for the Spurs until AT&T (now Frost Bank) opened. In closing the question becomes is there a requirement for citizens to underwrite most of the costs for these sports palaces? I like new as most folks might but there is a point that becomes too far for citizens.

Mizzou did it again

Remember what I wrote about SEC men’s basketball? “Win all your games at home and steal one or two on the road,” this Mizzou game wasn’t on the road. Ole Miss was the number 16 team in the nation and were the visitors, I didn’t know a great deal about Ole Miss except they had an outstanding record prior to the early evening match yesterday. It was a team victory for Mizzou, of the starters guard Tamar Bates led the way with 14 points, firepower off the bench came from Caleb Grill scoring 25 points.

The chief area of concern for me has always been rebounds and Mizzou managed to come out on top 39 to 28. Mizzou shot a scorching 44% from three. Am I surprised with the victory, to a degree but this team continues to provide to all this is not the same Mizzou team that stumbled through much of last season. This becomes win number 16 overall and they now have 5 conference wins. I hate to look too far ahead but I can say this with confidence, every win going forward especially in the tough SEC is good for the resume. Mizzou now gets a break until their February 1 game on the road against Mississippi State.

The NBA Internationally speaking

This past Thursday afternoon and late yesterday morning (our time) the Spurs and Pacers played games in the NBA Paris Games 2055, the outcome of each game was significant however it was the other thing. The NBA continues to expand the game on an international basis. This international emphasis began under the late David Stern at the time he was NBA commissioner. Until I began to research this subject I had no idea the number of international regular season games that have been played to date.

We must return to 1990 to uncover the first regular season international NBA game played, it was Suns and Jazz in Tokyo Japan. There have been 11 games played at several locations in Japan, 9 in London England. 13 in Mexico City and 5 played in Paris. During the commissioner’s press conference a member of the media from Germany asked the question, “When will Germany get an NBA game?” The commissioner didn’t provide an answer however Adam Silver made note the number of German players in the NBA.

Who are your best   

If you were asked to assemble a starting five NBA team who’s on it and why? There is so much worthwhile talent to choose from so my list certainly might be different from yours. My team will have two guards, two forwards and a center, with that said here goes. Based on his potential and what I’ve witnessed to date Victor Wembanyama is my center. I know he’s “only” 235 pounds but the total package he presents will not allow me to place him anywhere else except at center. 21-year old Paolo Banchero of the Magic is my power forward, his total game is among the best in the NBA. I have a friend who indicates he’s a Celtic fan, despite this fact he picks on Jayson Tatum. That is not me, the 26-year old Dukee is the key to the success of this franchise and my small forward.

The guard positions are difficult because of this fact alone, Chris Paul is the last true point guard remaining. There is no one behind him, there are plenty of combo guards so among them I must choose the best for my team. My point guard (combo) is Shai-Gilgeous Alexander of the Thunder, looking at his numbers tell me something SGA doesn’t do well. Finally we arrive at shooting guard, while this cause some concern on my part I ultimately made a choice. Would it be 28-year old Devin Booker of the Suns or 25-year old Jordan Poole of the Wizards as my pick? I am going with Booker based on his volume of work, he becomes my shooting guard. I am comfortable with all my choices with the exception of my shooting guard. What about yours, what is the composition of your team?

I’m pleased

If you’ve read this blog any length of time you are aware of my belief, I have long maintained there was no merger between the American Basketball Association and the NBA in 1976. Using the term “merger” might sound more friendly than a takeover which in essence is what really occurred. Practically everything we read indicates the ABA would soon go out of business, the ABA would likely have been forced to shut down by 1978 at the earliest, 1980 at the latest from what I’ve been able to determine by reading the history.   

Back to the terminology a moment, I’ve never read any term other than merger until recently. An ESPN story regarding Maverick Carter’s attempt to start a new basketball league, this from that article. “The NBA has not faced a significant rival 5-on-5 league since the 1970s, when it merged with the short-lived American Basketball Association and absorbed four of its teams—the Pacers, Nets, Nuggets and Spurs.” I underlined and bold printed the word I wanted you to focus on. To my knowledge I believe this to be the case, the word merger continues to be utilized by many in the media that is far from correct and it appears to be the case for this ESPN writer as well.

The Chicago Bulls born of expansion in 1966 have seen a number of players over that course of time wearing the jersey. Several of the names below played exclusively in the old Chicago Stadium now demolished while others played there and the United Center which opened in 1994. Certainly, the Michael Jordan Bulls teams were undoubtedly the best however there were others who played for the Bulls over time. Although I never witnessed the play of all below are those I believe to be the Top 10 players in Bulls history. I had difficulty excluding Norm Van Lier and Nate Thurmond, both distinguished themselves while playing for the Bulls.
