Bits n Pieces
We know the current status of the Knicks; they are not playing very well. In addition all kinds of critics are have emerged of Coach Mike Woodson. Well owner Dolan has made his thoughts known, the coach is safe for now. As for his relationship with Isiah Thomas he claims it’s just that and he would never be hired again in any capacity. I’m sure Knick fans are breathing a sigh of relief if Dolan is speaking the truth.

The news Kwame Brown was waived by the 76ers is hardly shocking, the 6-11 290 pound center never lived up to the promise held when he was drafted in 2001. Brown was the first high school player chosen number one when picked by the Wizards. He played for 7 different NBA teams during his 13-year career; Brown scored a modest 6.6 points per game and 5.5 rebounds a game. Although he’s only 31 years old it’s likely his NBA career is probably over.

I mentioned previously I read the Kansas City Star on-line, don‘t read the hard copy. With the disclaimer out front allow me to explain the newspaper continues to ignore UMKC. The school’s played 4 games to date and are 1-3. How can Coach Kareem Richardson build a program when the local newspaper and even television sports news ignores you? I must turn to ESPN.com to locate UMKC scores.

I forgot to mention a couple of points I missed when accessing the Lakers to date. So far, it’s evident the bench has improved, this enhanced play leads the NBA in scoring at 46.9 points per game. Of course the defense has not always been as evident as hoped; it must improve to make the playoffs.

Should he attend?
I have bragged about the Collegiate Experience, the College Hall of Fame for awhile now. Part of my pride exists because the HOF is located in Kansas City but it appears the induction class involves a degree of controversy. One of the 2013 inductees is Elvin “Big E” Hayes, University of Houston and possessor of the best turn-around jump shot seen. Hayes and Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul Jabbar) were key participants in the Game of the Century. Up to 1969 college basketball was regionally telecasted, shocking as it might seem now there were no nationally televised games. The NCAA Championship game although on a smaller scale was not televised. You should remember the name Eddie Eihorn, his foresaw the significance of this game.

He managed to assemble a collection of television stations across the nation to telecast the game. In January 1968 the Big E and Lew met in the Houston Astrodome before 52,000 fans and a national television audience. Many believe that single game moved college basketball from regional to a national game. Back to the controversy, Hayes was long ago inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame. The complaints I read; “I thought he definitely was already in….he played college ball in the 60’s…this is 2013” Another writer said; “For the BigE to be overlooked this long is a crime.” By the time you read this the banquet and induction ceremonies will have been held, did Hayes attend? Factors to consider prior to your conclusion keep this in mind. The Collegiate Hall of Fame opened in 2007 it would be quite difficult to induct players dating back to the early 1900’s in the first year of the HOF’s existence.

An honest man
I’m always getting into friendly arguments with a buddy of mine. The argument revolves around members of the media and their view. I have stated over and over anyone in the media is entitled to their opinion. At the same time I am entitled to disagree with that opinion if I determine it to be in conflict with mine. My friend argues “they (media) have access to much more information than we do.” My response to that statement is pure baloney, if the knowledge is available and you don’t utilize it is it really beneficial?

Recently I was watching Dan Patrick Show and former coach Tony Dungy was a guest. Patrick asked him a question regarding college football. Dungy’s response; “I don’t follow the college game close enough to comment.” At last I heard someone in sports media admit he didn’t have all the answers. Now I realize many of you might question that comment because Dungy is former coach who is now working in the media. Back to my buddy a minute, it’s my belief the only area we as fans lack are direct access to the athletes. We have no opportunity to interview or interact with them. The communication of this day allows us to have as much information as the person dispensing his or her view regarding the sport.

The Land Down Under
This is an update on prospect Exum; the youngster has quite a decision in front of him according to Jeff Goodman of ESPN. Goodman writes in ESPN.com that Exum could be eligible for the 2014 Draft. His high school class in Australia graduated this month. Pure speculation however Exum could choose among nine collegiate offers and enroll in December for the spring semester. He could be eligible immediately only missing the November-December games. On the other hand he could wait for the June Draft; Exum will turn 19 next July roughly 2 weeks after the draft. Some background on Exum, it should be pointed out his dad (now a naturalized Australian citizen) played basketball at North Carolina with a couple of Tarheels who might be familiar to you. Cecil Exum had Michael Jordan and James Worthy as teammates as he was an NCAA Champion.

I think he’s still on the recruiting trail
We have a local sports host/owner who often expresses strange views on various sports subjects; take basketball recruiting as an example. Cliff Alexander 5-star prospect and the number four prospect in the nation committed to Kansas on November 15. This radio host began his dialogue with; “Bill Self is a great recruiter.” I believe few of us would argue with that portion of his statement. The second portion is where I disagreed, he claims “Self is probably a better recruiter than Coach K. “Wins and losses aside it’s my belief they are on the same level. For this host to simply state one is better than the other in recruiting is incapable of being measured in my view.

Below is a brief glimpse of the recruiting accomplishments of Coach K. and staff for 2014.  Duke has received commitments from the number one and number 5 prospects in the nation, Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones are rated 5-star prospects by Rivals. Today Justise Winslow number 9 in the nation committed to Duke, Winslow is a 6-6 210 pound forward. With this commitment ESPN RecruitingNation has pronounced Duke with the number one recruiting class in the nation for 2014. These highly touted recruits may be unable to translate their high success to college. We know this for a fact Coach K. may be 66 years old but he‘s still working the recruiting trail. I hope the local radio host reads this.

He’s preparing for retirement
We have all read of professional athletes unprepared for retirement. Not the physical part but what do I do with the balance of my life. Numerous stories have been written regarding former players who squandered millions of dollars. Several have been forced into situations we’ve all asked; “what did he do with his money?” 37-year old Chauncey Billups has returned to the Pistons for what might be his final season. It’s been reported “Mr. Big Shot” has purchased 30 Wendy’s restaurant franchises. Ownership of a restaurant chain is no guarantee of future success; you must successfully manage your acquisition. Billups unlike many athletes on the cusp of retirement is thinking ahead.

The Cowboys
It’s time for the Oklahoma State Cowboys actions to match the intentions many have spelled out. Last season was supposed to be a rebuilding year for Kansas, OSU still managed to finish behind the Jayhawks. It’s been mentioned previously this is sophomore point guard Marcus Smart’s last season in Stillwater (OK). Smart is a projected lottery pick and most certainly will declare for the NBA draft. In addition to Smart the Cowboys return NBA prospect forward LeBryan Nash. Team Kansas this season is very talented on paper but also young and yet to weather adversity.

I know you say I’m forgetting the Duke game; I’m tossing that one out I believe there were other elements affecting the outcome of the game. Is this the season for OSU to make a break-through? Can’t remember which coach made this statement. He was questioned about the freshmen on his team, he said; “the best thing about freshmen they become sophomores.” With the possible exception of Wiggins (who may be gone) the balance of those talented freshmen will become sophomores. All bets are off for Oklahoma State if they don’t do it this season.

Maybe it was a “Smart” move
A large number of “experts” second guessed Marcus Smart for not leaving Oklahoma State after his freshman year. They said “he’d be a lottery pick for sure in the weak 2013 NBA draft.” During the non-conference portion of the season teams usually don’t schedule stiff competition. As for Oklahoma State I haven’t checked their schedule, this we know the Memphis Tigers (number 11) ain’t no pushover. Smart went through, around and over their opponent to the tune of 39 points 5 steals, 2 block shots and 4 assists. Smart did all this while shooting .523 from the floor. At 6-4 and 220 pounds he certainly has an NBA body, Kevin Durant seated at the game pronounced him NBA ready. Smart indicated he wasn’t sure last year if he was The Magic’s Victor Oladipo came into the NBA as a 2 guard; he’s playing some point guard ready for the NBA. The only remaining question, is he a point guard or shooting guard? That might be a minor question, we know he can play.

A replacement?
This is written Sunday night prior to Derrick Rose’s Monday surgery. I have no idea if the surgery is successful but a larger question is looming for Bulls management. It might behove the Bulls to explore a point guard replacement for Rose. I expect Rose to return to the court but the issue is much larger than that. He will not return the same player after two surgeries. The Bulls proved last year they have the assembled pieces, missing last year was the “driver.” Rose drives the vehicle, missing in action last season the vehicle that was the Bulls barely remained on the road in the playoffs. The Bulls may have missed an NBA Championship last season with Rose in the lineup we just don’t know.

Back to the future
The title of several Michael J. Fox movies in the mid to late 1980’s was Back to the Future, we might apply that tag to the Charlotte Bobcats. Next season they will become the Hornets with a name change. Of course Hornets was the name of the franchise but the team and name left the city for New Orleans in 2002. Two years later an expansion NBA team began play in Charlotte. As for New Orleans a new ownership group wanted a name more closely identified with the city and state. The owner chose Pelicans the State Bird of Louisiana to replace the Hornet name. Once this was done the Charlotte franchise under Michael Jordan applied to the NBA to claim the Hornet team name. In addition to a name change there will be uniform color change. The Bobcats color would be replaced by the teal and purple jersey of the 1988 Charlotte Hornets. In addition three secondary jersey colors will also be worn, what was old has become new again.

We didn’t want to hear this news
I didn’t see the game but discovered Friday evening Derrick Rose was injured. He sustained the injury during the Bulls game against the Blazers and we waited for further news. Saturday afternoon the team announced their star point guard would require surgery. He sustained a torn meniscus in his right knee, no timetable on his return. I know Bulls fans are zapped but I feel worse for Rose. He sat out last season due to a torn ligament in his left knee. It sickens me to see an athlete in any sport sustain a major injury; hopefully Rose will be able to return to the game he loves.

It’s more than a learning curve
Early in the NBA season the Nets on the court resembled a fine tuned orchestra it was not to last, in recent days the notes played have become quite sour. Naturally the finger of blame has been pointed at rookie coach Jason Kidd. It’s rather unusual for an athlete to retire and to be hired immediately as a head coach however it’s more than Kidd. After the summer blockbuster trade (Garnett, Pierce and Terry) this Nets team was pronounced a contender for an Eastern Conference Crown. Ownership believed the team they assembled would play successful basketball throughout the season. Although an older team limiting minutes during the regular season would prepare them for a long playoff run.

The Three Amigos playing fewer minutes would be ready for playoff basketball; the key it was hoped no back to back games in the playoffs. The recent problems of this team are more than Captain Kidd steering the ship, 1st mate Deron Williams has been injured. Center Brook Lopez has been injured so has Andre Kirilenko who was expected to contribute off the bench. The Nets roster is more prepared for a doctor’s visit than a visiting team. As this is written the team with the largest payroll in the NBA is 3-9, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. The health of the big three plus Williams, Lopez and Kirilenko will improve, it’s hoped the ship will regain its buoyancy and be able to mount a run and secure a playoff spot.

The story has no “legs”
Younger readers may not be familiar with the title of this story. The “no legs” reference simply states a portion might be true there is no evidence of a continuing report due. As a member of the media Peter Vecsey can write whatever he wishes. My problem is lack of credibility with this writer. He sent out a tweet indicating Steve Nash was considering retirement due to his continuing injury issues. There is no doubt at age 39 Nash is near the end of his career however it appears Vecsey has “created” a story. Denials to the Vecsey tweet emerged from all directions including Laker management.

As for my creditability issues I had to research the one issue which caused me to take Vecsey information with a grain of salt.  He was part of the studio crew at the time the NBA was on NBC. Jeff Van Gundy was coaching the Knicks in 1999. Prior to the telecast of the weekly game Vecsey reported; “Van Gundy will be fired before halftime.” The firing never occurred in fact Van Gundy lasted almost two years before resigning after 19 games in the 2001-2002 season. Vescey claimed he received the firing story from a lunch meeting with a Knick executive, who do we believe Vescey or the source of his information? In any event Vescey worked for the New York Post but left in 2012. Vescey’s subject Steve Nash finally made reference to the story;
“I have no idea of retiring I have 18 months of basketball left. “

 Don’t overlook him
I’m not getting ahead of myself, it’s still early in the collegiate season, and in addition one game fails to make a season. You might remember I wrote I was more interested in viewing a freshman prospect developing his game over others. Currently he’s only scoring at 5.5 points per game clip and the same number for rebounding. The outstanding figure for this 7-foot 250 pound center might be his 2.5 assists per game. Currently his statistics are limited due to playing time and adjustment to the collegiate game. Bill Self was able to recruit Joel Embiid who attended high school in the U.S. after emigrating from Cameroon West Africa.

Last Tuesday may have been his breakout game against Iona. Embiid was 7-7 from the floor, 2-4 from the free throw line for 16 points. He also managed to snatch down 13 rebounds while blocking 2 shots. Bold prediction, if Embiid continues to progress over the next few years we may eventually see him in an NBA uniform. I hope nobody gets in this youngsters ear and convinces him to leave school early. Embiid while considered a prospect clearly needs tutoring over the next 4 years? The last sentence is not a question, it contains a question mark because I’m unsure if it will hold true.

Speaking of the Lakers
ESPN, SI.com, Yahoo.com and CBSSports.com compile a weekly power rank of NBA teams. Same as the Top 25 collegiate polls you lose and you may drop in the poll, all teams are ranked 1-30. I have no disagreement with the latest placement of the Lakers on any of the polls. What causes me to laugh out loud is “haters continue to hate.” A fan responding to the poll emailed ESPN indicating; “the Lakers should be 13 slots lower than number 17.” This writer’s assessment would place the Lakers at number 30 supplanting the Utah Jazz who are 1-10 as this is written. The Lakers certainly are no threat to win an NBA championship this season but I believe at (5-7) are certainly better than the Jazz.

Can’t get no love even in your home town
How about this, you hire a new coach and change conferences. All done in hope to boost your program and the local paper still ignores you. That event occurred recently in my home town Kansas City (MO). Now just maybe I’m wrong, I only read the Kansas City Star on-line so the hard copy edition might have contained the story, the on-line edition failed to mention the game. Creighton had All American Doug McDermott, he didn’t disappoint scoring 37 points but that was only a piece of the story. UMKC fell behind in the middle of the first half but they never gave up. They hustled all evening they just didn’t make shots, UMKC eventually succumbed 96-70.

“What can Brown do for you?”
The headline above was the tag line used by UPS in its commercials a few years ago. We could apply the term to Cavs coach Mike Brown, wonder if owner Gilbert might be questioning his re-hire of the coach he once fired? After several quality drafts that brought them Kyrie Irving, Tristan Thompson and Dion Waiters many believed the Cavs were on the way back. In addition they signed veterans Jarrett Jack and Earl Clark to boost their depth. The prevailing thought the Cavs might be returning to the “LeBron” days when they were an Eastern Conference threat.

Although he was injured signing former All-Star Andrew Bynum was another upward bound move. As for this team (along with others) the season is young, there is still time to turn things around. Reports indicate the Cavs locker room somewhat resembles the Lakers of last year. Irving was reported to have gotten into a shouting match with Coach Brown. The Cavs shocked the NBA world last June making UNLV’s Anthony Bennett the number one pick, Bennett has seen limited minutes due to injuries. The Cavs as with other teams are faced to deal with the injury issue. As for the coaching story that’s a whole other concern, again keep in mind it’s still early.

I beg to differ
If you remember a few columns back I pointed out the Spurs had an ageing roster in fact the average age is older than the Lakers. Its evident Allie LaForge CBSSports Network did not read my column (smile). She and co-host Doug Gottlieb were discussing the Lakers-Rockets game on their program Lead In. LaForge stated and I paraphrase; “the Lakers are an old team.” WRONG---There are several NBA teams whose average age tops that of the Lakers.

Miami Heat - 30.7
Brooklyn Nets - 29.5
New York Knicks - 28.5

The Lakers average is 28.1 while their Staple Center co-tenants (Clippers) are 28.0. I believe LaForge and others look at Nash (39), Bryant (35) and Gasol (33) and conclude incorrectly the team is old. The Lakers might not be the youngest; they may not be the swiftest. One thing for sure they certainly are not the oldest team in the NBA Ms LaForge. Check this link http://en.hispanosnba.com/teams/comparison

The bloom is back in the Rose (Garden)
Blazers have got to be the hottest team in the NBA. Warmer than defending NBA champion Heat, even the Pacers who went down recently after opening the season 9-0.  This Northwest division team has won seven games in a row and has returned to winning once again. Oh, my bad the arena’s name has been changed. It’s no longer the Rose Garden it’s now the Moda Center. *“In August 2013, the Trail Blazers announced a 10-year deal with Moda Health, an Oregon-based health insurance provider, to rename the arena Moda Center.” I couldn‘t title this story the bloom is back in the Moda Center could I? *Wikipedia

Upsets
Monday’s edition of Words eye view briefly discussed the significance or importance of Top 25 polls. Two mid-major schools had upset Top 25 schools this past weekend. One game was overlooked; Iowa State is certainly no mid-major they are unranked however. They managed to knock off the number 7 Michigan Wolverines 77-70.

No football allowed
The conference realignment across the nation was football generated, all except one. The re-constituted Big East Conference was dubbed the “Catholic League” but that’s a misnomer. True the majority of schools are Catholic affiliated but not all of them. The key difference between this conference movement and others this move was basketball driven rather than football. This new Big East Conference competes in a variety of other sports, they are:

Butler
Creighton
DePaul
Georgetown
Marquette
Providence
St. John’s
Seton Hall
Villanova
Xavier

This is a throwback in a manner of speaking; the original Big East was founded as a basketball only conference. The conference has now returned to the days of its founding. There are exploratory talks of adding two teams to make a 12-team conference.

Motor City
Have you noticed how many new jerseys NBA teams introduce each season? We discussed the tee-shirt jerseys earlier and others. As for the Pistons I missed the introduction of their alternate jerseys. They introduced a third jersey with the words Motor City across the front. Of course the Pistons are going to require more than new jerseys to return as a competitive team. Once upon a time this team was the scourge of the Eastern Conference. The road to an NBA championship ran through Detroit until Jordan’s Bulls came along. The Pistons are off to slow start however draft picks and free agent signing have added talented players to their roster. Adding veteran Josh Smith to the Andre Drummond/Greg Monroe combo will hopefully improve play from this point into the future.

Things you do while waiting on Kobe’s return
My view of the Lakers so far while waiting on Kobe‘s return. I will inform you up front I haven’t seen all 12 games played thus far. Surprised at the play of Jordan Hill and Jody Meeks, both are shooting well at this stage. If they can sustain the pace until Kobe returns. The Laker bench has been light years better this season than last season it’s been productive to date. Wesley Johnson and Xavier Henry have been catalyst off the bench. I could include Hill in the mix however he’s been moved into the starting lineup. Disappointments (so far) must be the play of Pau and Chris Kaman. I knew in advance Kaman had limited skills at the center position so far he’s been up and down.

As for Pau I don’t know if its injuries, D’Antoni’s system or what? Steve Nash for obvious reasons, realizing the age factor he cannot remain healthy for a long enough period for a quality assessment. I must include Shawne Williams in the disappointment category. He was to serve as the stretch four D’Antoni so likes to use in his system. Team defense must be a considered for the 5-7 the record to date. The Lakers have lost a minimum of two games they could have won giving up leads late. Call me a dreamer if you must, it’s still my belief Kobe at 90% will still be a threat. The key is him convinced he must play at a lower skill level. Late in his career we didn’t witness Air Jordan as much as we saw mid-range Jordan. Of course we’d see glimpses of MJ’s early years but like others he probably realized his diminished skills.

Bits n Pieces
On several occasions we’ve discussed the significance of the 2014 NBA draft; this draft may set a record on the number of high profile athletes drafted. The majority of these prospects as usual are freshman. We know the names, Andrew Wiggins, Jabari Parker, Julius Randle and Dante Exum. Overlooked (I don’t believe intentionally) is freshman Aaron Gordon whose enrolled at Arizona, this 6-9 225 pound small forward will likely be a lottery pick too.

What makes you so sure? I’m convinced too much sports talk radio/television reduces your brain cell count. Recently you might be aware Michael Jordan chose his pick up team. I couldn’t believe my ears, the next day Skip Bayless of ESPN claims that’s not the players MJ wants. Bayless said; “Jordan would exclude Scottie Pippen and James Worthy.” I’m not going to take time to explain how Bayless has come to this conclusion or the basis for it.

The number one prospect in the Class of 2014 Jahlil Okafor 6-10, 265 pound announced his college choice along with “little” buddy Tyus Jones. Jones is a 6-1 175 pound point guard and the number five prospects are a package deal both are headed for Duke. Cliff Alexander is the number four prospect in the nation; this 6-8 240 pound forward is headed to Kansas. Finally the number three prospect Stanley Johnson is on his way to Arizona, he‘s a 6-6 220 pound forward.

Mizzou also made recruiting news over the weekend. The school’s two summer verbal commits signed on the dotted line affirming Mizzou as their choice. Jakeenan Gant 6-8 200 pound from Springfield (GA) and 6-4 175 shooting guard Namon Wright from Los Angeles (CA). Both prospects are awarded 4-stars by Rivals.

Are Top 25 polls a reflection of strength or popularity?  Before you respond to the question consider the weekend events.  Two mid-majors were winners, Indiana State beat number 21 Notre Dame and Belmont upset North Carolina number 12.

You might have a problem
A fan wrote complaining of the Hack-a-Howard move of the Lakers in last week’s game. The writer didn’t appear to be critical of the Lakers just the rule itself. Personally I’m not fond of it either; it slows down the game while Howard or some other pathetic free-throw shooter trots to the line. The writer said the NBA should change the rule and I don’t disagree with his view. Until a rule change is implemented a coach can utilize it if he considers it’s an advantage to his team.

As for Howard his first year in the NBA he shot .671 from the line and his shooting has been on a steady decline since then, last year as a member of the Lakers he shot .492. The fan might not approve of this rule however unless it’s repealed or Howard works on his free-throws---you know the results. Interesting the problem last season with playing along side Gasol, seems the same issue exists with Asik. Coach McHale experimented with Asik at center and Howard at power forward. It appears to not be working, Asik has been given a spot on the bench and this move has resulted in him requesting a trade once again.

Multi sport athletes
I’d forgotten former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb played basketball at Syracuse. There are other athletes who were also talented enough to play more than one sport, and several did. The late Dave Debusschere was a stalwart power forward for the Knicks in the 1970‘s. Did you know he’d signed a baseball contract and pitched in the major leagues for the Chicago White Sox? He gave up his baseball career for one in basketball. Red Sox pitcher Gene Conley often was forced to pitch with no spring training. He was late reporting to the team. Conley was a Celtic reserve during the ‘50’s and ‘60’s and the team often played deep into spring. The late Bill Sharman was a star guard for those Celtic’s during that same period; he also played in the Brooklyn Dodgers farm system for several years.

Once upon a time Pirate shortstop Dick Groat had been Duke basketball player prior to major league baseball. In the 1960‘s Dodger outfielder and first baseman Frank Howard was an imposing 6-8 standing at the plate; Howard originally attended Ohio State on a basketball scholarship. His later acting career exceeded his brief role with the baseball Cubs and basketball Rochester Royals of the NBA. Chuck Connors is the name, the 6-5 Connors is credited with being the first player to break a backboard a feat he accomplished in 1946. Although Bo Jackson never played basketball either in college or professionally his name must be included. Jackson a quality NFL running back (till he was injured) was an all-star baseball player for the Royals.

Are there replacements on the horizon?
Larry Brown at SMU is still coaching at age 73 however he is a dinosaur and certainly the exception, longtime UConn coach Jim Calhoun retired in 2012. Long time Purdue coach Gene Keady retired in 2005 and Bobby Knight a few years later in 2008. There are others who may have been omitted however I hope you see the direction this is headed.  Kentucky’s John Calipari, Roy Williams at North Carolina, Louisville’s Rick Pitino and Jim Boeheim at Syracuse are close to the end of their coaching careers. What does the future hold for the coaching profession? The future of coaching in the NBA is a little difficult to project there are few instances similar to Brad Stevens. Most often assistant coaches become head coaches in the NBA, few come from the collegiate ranks. We thought Stevens was a “lifer” at Butler, he remolded Butler into a national power once again. We could still include Stevens name as a possible future collegiate coach if the NBA doesn’t work out, he’s only 37.

Coaches are no longer mainstays at one school; most are always on the lookout for a bigger and better program and a sizable pay increase. We could mention Steve Alford’s name as a coach who’s made a number of upward bound moves and now coaching at UCLA. It’s yet to be determined how long 36-year old Shaka Smart will remain at VCU. Before fans and alumni of the program begin tossing rocks at me you realize it’s only a matter of time before an athletic director says “I gonna make him an him an offer he can’t refuse.” We could also include Josh Pastner; the school’s coaching search was not very far reaching. At the time John Calipari departed Memphis they hired his top assistant coach, Pastner is 36 years old. There are another 10 or so collegiate coaches all under age 40 who are establishing themselves. The future of collegiate coaches is bright the only concern is the revolving door mentality that exists with a number of them.

Tanking the season
All summer we’ve come across articles detailing a number of NBA teams losing on purpose, losing to qualify for the draft lottery. My Lakers were one of the first teams identified; later other teams such as the 76ers were mentioned. Drafting players is a roll of the dice in many instances; recently I heard a Kansas radio analyst description of freshman Joel Embiid. He said “Embiid’s game is similar to that of Dikembe Mutombo.” He went on to describe various elements he believed this 7 foot 250 pound center talent possesses.

The question, if he’s close to Mutombo talent and he leaves Kansas wills a team chance it and draft him? In the NBA especially with a big man we almost always draft on potential. The 2014 NBA Draft (on paper) is reported to be one of the best over the last several years; would a team lose on purpose? If a team secures the final playoff slot and then loses in the first round, is it worth the effort? Wouldn’t it be better to attempt to draft one of the talents who might emerge from the 2014 draft? Makes sense except I would hate to think my favorite team losing purpose in order to draft Jabari Parker, Andrew Wiggins, Marcus Smart or some other potential talent.

Bits n Pieces
Did you happen to catch the Jayhawk versus Jayhawk dunk. During a portion of the recent Laker-Pelican game Laker forward Xavier Henry dunked on Pelican center Jeff Withey. Most interesting since both were teammates at Kansas, Xavier left after his freshman year but the two were teammates for the 2009-2010 season.

Andrew Wiggins Kansas team won the game but his game and Jabari Parker appear similar. Wiggins scored 22 points on 9 for 15 shooting and grabbed 8 rebounds. As for Parker his total was 27 points, 9-18 from the floor and 9 rebounds with 3 steals.

M.I.A. from last night Duke-Kansas game was local kid Semi Ojeleye. This 6-8 230 pound forward was the number 31 prospect in Rivals Class of 2013. I don’t want to read anything into the fact he didn’t play just surprised.

Hey ESPN.com why not a nightly grade on all NBA teams rather than just focus on the Heat. LeBron, Wade and Bosh are awarded a letter grade yet the 76er team receives a game. Why don’t you provide the opposition a letter grade too?

Who plays the point?
I expressed a concern about the point guard play of Mizzou last season, 5-10 Phil Pressey was certainly talented however there was a missing element.  It appeared on several occasions he appeared to butt heads with his coach. During his three years Pressey became Mizzou’s all-time assist and steals leader. The negatives especially last season appeared to outweigh the positives Pressey represented. He was not a very capable shooter however I don‘t believe he was expected to be a great shooter. The problem last season he often exhibited poor decision as to when to take the shot.

In fairness to Pressey the departure of Michael Dixon Jr. allowed him little time off the court. As for ball distribution it seemed he preferred the spectacular at times rather than a simple bounce pass. His replacement is a far different type of guard. 6-5 Jordan Clarkson transferred from Tulsa but was forced to sit out last season, he was able to practice with the team. The term combo guard has come into common usage in today’s game and that might be the best description of Jordan. His play against Southern Illinois was noteworthy; he scored 31 points on 12-18 from the floor. Clarkson’s game included 5 assists and 2 steals and 0 turnovers.

The collegiate season begins in earnest
ESPN has no monopoly on collegiate basketball, they likely will telecast more games than Fox Sports, CBS, CBSSports.Network and ABC combined. 29 consecutive hours of college basketball coverage began on Monday evening at 6:00 p.m. Central Time with Kent State at Temple. The games concluded with a Tuesday evening Kansas-Duke game which started at 9:00 p.m. Central time.

Bits n Pieces
Patience, patience I must continue to remind myself and fans of the Missouri-Kansas City program. The Roos (Kangaroos) lose a close one to Division II Emporia State (Kansas) 81-76.

I was surprised when I saw a video of the new basketball arena at Nebraska. From an outsider like me basketball appeared to be an afterthought at this football dominated school. Guess I was wrong; opening this fall will be the 16,000 seat Pinnacle Bank Arena. This arena replaces the 13,000 seat Bob Devaney Sports Center which opened in 1976. The video only contained a view of the building outside however I’m sure it must be just as impressive inside.

The Associated Press is reporting Supersports Television of South Africa will broadcast NBA games to 47 nations below the Sahara Region live. Naysayer’s always fail to read these stories, they continue to write emails supporting their belief “nobody is watching the NBA.” If the NBA is not on your television or your buddies don’t incorrectly conclude no one is watching. I would never be so audacious to argue just because I don’t like something the entire world follows my view.

I believed veteran basketball analyst Bill Raftery was committed to Fox Sports I exclusively. Not so according to Richard Deitsch of SI.com, Raf will also work a number of CBS college games and also work the NCAA basketball tournament.

I know it’s still early
A reminder to you (and me) the NBA season has barely begun, the collegiate season only started last Friday. The point one game as season does not make, it helps if you began the season on a high note similar to Jabari Parker. I informed you awhile back; don’t go to sleep on this Duke freshman. Freshman Andrew Wiggins at Kansas has become a hype machine not by his choosing. The light has shown less bright on fellow freshman Parker. In any event it was my belief Duke freshman Parker would be just as spectacular as Wiggins and he provided an early glimpse. Parker aided the Duke cause as they beat Davidson University 111-77; Parker scored 22 points in 23 minutes on 8 for 10 shooting from the floor. In addition this 6-8 235 pound forward snatched down 6 rebounds and dished out 2 assists. Parker had a complete game and only committed 1 turnover in his first regular season game.

Speaking of early (NBA)
After my Lakers were blown out (at home) by the Wolves the loss left them with a 3-5 record. I was gonna write a misery tale but decided to check the current standings, several playoff teams have begun the season on a sour note as well. The Knicks have 2 wins and 4 losses, the Bulls are 2-3 while Denver has only won 1 of its first 6 games. Even more interesting the defending champion Heat is only one game above .500 at 4-3. The Lakers beginning the season 3-5 is not what I hoped however it looks as though fans have shared company in our misery.

Decision day
This is confirmation most likely Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones are headed to the same school. I wouldn’t dare attempt to predict their destination. The 6-10 270 pound Okafor is Rivals number one prospect in the Class of 2014, Jones the number five prospect in the Class of 2014 is a 6-1 171 pound point guard. Both will announce their school of choice at 3:00 p.m. today, Okafor from Chicago and Jones from Apple Valley (Minneapolis-St Paul suburb).

No Kobe, no matter
Most Laker fans were curious how the initial Lakers-Rockets game would turn out. A number of fans might have the dates circled on their calendars when the teams would meet. Thursday November 7th would be first date with the Rockets hosting the Lakers. The Lakers shot lights-out in the first half of the game rushing out to a 19 point lead at a point. Of course the Rockets would make adjustments and would mount a comeback; the game wasn’t decided until the final few seconds. After receiving the ball on an out of bounds play guard Steve Blake tossed in a 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds left in the game, final score Lakers 99 Rockets 98.

Thoughts on the game---the Lakers snatched down 47 rebounds to the Rockets 44, in addition they handed out 26 assists to the Rockets 17. At the end the Lakers didn’t shot particularly well however the Lakers defense managed to hold the Rockets to an even lower percentage. During one point in the game Howard attempting to grab a rebound accidentally tipped it in the Lakers basket. I agree with Dan Patrick most of the time but I think he missed the point this morning. In announcing the score of the game on his radio show he said; “Howard’s gone, Laker fans might not like the fact he left (L.A.) but they need to get over it.” I could respond for Laker fans, we got over Shaq leaving we will get over Howard but not this quick and after but one game.

His career may be over
You remember Royce White don’t you? He was the talented forward the Rockets drafted last season from Iowa State. White had anxiety issues, could not travel by air and other mental health issues. The short version of the story he was traded to the 76ers over the summer. White was one of the final cuts as the team trimmed its roster for the start of the season. I claim no expertise in the field but do believe many who suffered and received help have been able to improve their well-being. I’m unsure if his story was media driven the indication last season White appeared to take the position his issue rested solely with the Rockets only. Until he is able to look into the mirror it serves no purpose to point fingers at others, Royce get help to deal with your mental health issues whether you want an NBA career or not.

Bits n Pieces
MSG Chairman James Dolan says; “the Knicks have enough talent to win a championship this year.” The Knicks have not begun the season as expected so how does Dolan respond? He decides to place the dance team on waivers; they are not allowed to perform during lulls in the game or at half-time. That’s his fix for the Knicks rebounding and defensive problems.

Over the years I’ve tossed a number of rocks (perhaps boulders depending on your perspective) in the direction of ESPN. In this case I am applauding the network for a portion of its programming. For those who might not be familiar they feature a documentary program 30 for 30 which always features an interesting and insightful story. Recently the program Jason Hehir directed Bernie and Ernie. The short feature told the story of Bernard King and Ernie Grunfeld two New York City youngsters who journeyed to the University of Tennessee to play collegiate basketball.

The media has reminded us time and time again the Lakers are an old team. Have they bothered to look at the Spurs roster? Of course they have youth on their roster but notice the age of their key offensive (and defensive) players.

Celebrity owners
Former Laker and entrepreneur Magic Johnson is now a Dodger owner, entertainer Gloria Esteban and her husband Emilio own a piece of the NFL Dolphins. Musician Jon Bon Jovi once owned the Philadelphia Soul Arena football team. There are other celebrity sports owners but the intent here to detail celebrity NBA owners. It’s my belief the NBA has more celebrity owners than any other major sport. Jay-Z sold his piece of ownership in the Nets to coach Jason Kidd however other celebrity owners remain. The rapper Nelly purchased a share of the Bobcats at the time Bob Johnson owned the team.

The latest information located indicates Nelly has continued ownership under Michael Jordan. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are also reported to own interest in the 76ers franchise. Smith of course is originally from Philadelphia but headed west to Hollywood just like his Fresh Prince television character. Entertainer Usher lives in Atlanta although connected to the Cavs as a minority owner; he purchased his share in 2005. Justin Timberlake and actress wife Jessica Biel own a minority share in the Grizzlies franchise. Of course we now have the large than life Shaquille O’Neal an owner with the Kings franchise. At the purchase announcement he referred to his new purchase as the Shaq-amento Kings.

I’m envious
Poplulus architects a Kansas City based firm will design a new arena for Las Vegas. According to reports the $350 million dollar building will seat 20,000 spectators and naturally will be built to NBA/NHL specs. Groundbreaking will take place next spring and it will open in the spring of 2016. You are probably wondering why the “I’m envious” headline on this story? I’m unsure if there is a “pecking” order for an NBA franchise however Vegas may have moved ahead of my town Kansas City. The issue that has always been a detriment to a team has been gambling.

In recent years that issue has been infrequently mentioned even by David Stern. The commissioner appeared to be opposed to an NBA team in the city however he’ll leave the scene in February. Las Vegas is glitz; Kansas City is well its Midwest and plain. From a regional standpoint we might have a larger regional population to draw than Las Vegas. Nobody is gonna drive 200 miles every night to Kansas City but they may on a weekend. Last months NBA exhibition game a fan was interviewed who drove from Omaha Nebraska. Everyone in Omaha is not an NBA fan however the metro population is nearly 900,000.

I’ll make this my call
I’ve decided the decision is mine; I’ve concluded a nickname belongs to only one athlete. It cannot, should not be utilized or substituted for another athlete. During one 10:00 p.m. sportscast a local broadcaster pronounced Royals pitcher “Big Game” James Shields the winner. The nickname “Big Game” belongs to legendary Laker forward James Worthy. I‘m unsure who bestowed Worthy with the nickname but it belongs to him. One more point of fact, if you mentioned Big Game James to most basketball fans the majority would probably believe you were referring to Worthy.

I would place a wager no one (except this local sports anchor) refers to James Shields as “Big Game.” We can’t hang “Catfish” on another athlete it belongs to former Yankee pitcher Jim “Catfish” Hunter. The “Big O“is basketball legend Oscar Robertson while “Iron Mike” belongs to former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson. Even former Yankee Reggie Jackson lent his voice to this discussion; *“Reggie Jackson still thinks that he -- not David Ortiz -- is the true Mr. October.” See where I’m going with this? I wonder if I should send the local anchor an email. Oh well baseball season is over but next year. *New York Post

He did it once again
I thought Devin Booker might be headed to Mizzou, my conclusion was based mostly of the fact his dad Melvin was an All American guard at the school. My expectation that Booker would be outfitted in black and gold will not occur, John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats strike once again. Booker a 6-5 180 pound shooting guard is rated by Rivals the number 30 prospect in the Class of 2014. In addition Trey Lyles 6-10 255 pound power forward (number 8 prospect) also gave his verbal commit to Kentucky.

Once again ESPNU awards Kentucky the top school recruiting position for 2014. Maybe there was something to the statement made by Kelly Oubre’s dad. Oubre recruited by Kansas and Kentucky chose the Jayhawks. It was reported the young man’s dad claimed “Calipari kicks players out of his program” Just joking folks, doesn’t make a great deal of sense. Why would a coach force an athlete to leave for the NBA? I’m still trying to figure that one out.

Don’t air your dirty laundry
This bothers me to write this, my all-time favorite Laker has done it again. I thought at one point the opinions he expressed regarding his former team were “television.” Magic was proving (at least I thought) he could be just a critical of the Lakers as the other studio hosts, never mind he owned a piece of the team at one point. Magic announced recently he was leaving his ESPN broadcasts duties behind him, his schedule would no longer permit him to allot the time.

Despite leaving the broadcast he’s still talking and continues to criticize Laker decisions. On ESPN radio the other day he repeated his; “dislike for Jim Buss, D’Antoni is the wrong coach and the Lakers should have re-hired Phil Jackson.” Magic should forget about the Buss factor, Jimmy (as an owner) aint’ going nowhere until he decides he wants to leave. I’m no huge fan of D’Antoni however he’s the coach at least for now. The fair evaluation would be waiting until this season is complete prior to deciding to replace him. As for the Phil Jackson suggestion, PJ himself recently expressed doubt he’d ever coach again he indicated his health was the reason. I just wish Magic would keep his thoughts to himself.

How do you measure success
I remember two years ago reading emails from cynics (most likely Kansas fans) Mizzou would be unable to compete in the SEC. The first season playing football was a disaster, injuries and other issues made for an unproductive season. Although Mizzou basketball was better than football the program still failed to meet expectations. They were good enough to gain an NCAA berth but succumbed after the first round. 2013 SEC football is yet to be completed however the football program has been a Top 10 team for most of the season. With the dawn of the basketball season the specter of Kentucky and Florida loom large over the SEC. It’s my belief Mizzou will be much better than media projections.

Can’t wait for basketball season
A few weeks back I mentioned a couple of schools anxious for basketball season. I mentioned that neither Kentucky nor Kansas was having much success on the football field. As this is written Duke has certainly been more successful, as this is written they are 6-2 and 2-2 in the ACC. All three schools have turned out NFL athletes, when the schools are mentioned basketball first comes to mind.

Character issues
Although it might seem every eligible athlete is drafted don’t believe it. I realize its football however former NFL coach Tony Dungy was discussing “problem” college players. Dungy tossed out a term to Dan Patrick I don’t ever remember hearing. He said Richie Incognito Dolphins lineman had the initials D.N.D.C. placed behind his name prior to the NFL draft. The designation, Do Not Draft Character issues. I’m sure with a Demarcus Cousins in the NBA and maybe others you might find this difficult to believe. I have no proof to offer you but I believe if it exists in the NFL it exists in the NBA.

Basketball hype
This is no reflection on the university; they had nothing to do with the hoopla surrounding freshman Andrew Wiggins. Allow me up front to announce I have no skepticism regarding Wiggin’s talent; I have difficulty with a recent SI magazine cover. Wiggins was placed between photos of Wilt Chamberlain and Danny Manning. Think about this, freshman in that time period were ineligible for varsity sports, Chamberlain played only two years but was enrolled at Kansas three years. Danny Manning left the university after his senior year. Its likely Wiggins will only play one year before declaring for the NBA draft. In conclusion I’ve stated this previously, the pressure on this youngster to perform might be overwhelming. I hope he can handle the notoriety successfully if he’s at Kansas one year or four.

Just a few thoughts
It’s not my responsibility to ensure happiness for Dwight Howard however I wonder if he’s adjusted. He’s made a few negative comments regarding his time with the Lakers. Howard is playing for a team that certainly needs his rebounding and defense. The Rockets certainly don‘t need him to score the basketball. They were okay last season with no Howard in the lineup. Even more interesting for me he’s joined a team with a budding super star James Harden. Harden will be first up to take the shot with seconds left in the game. Howard might not even be the second option considering his poor free throw ability.

While visiting the Howard matter there is one more thought, Doug Gottlieb of CBSSports stated; “Kobe Bryant is not a good teammate.” He made this statement in discussing Howard’s former role with the Lakers. I’m unsure however this might be the 2nd or 3rd time in the last 6 weeks Gottlieb has made the Kobe “teammate” remark. The only negative opinions I’ve heard expressed about Kobe are from players who are not teammates or former Laker Smush Parker. Gottlieb is fond of stating his opinions are his own but he does provide background evidence to support this assessment. I just wish he’d provide us that rather than simply voicing an opinion.

Another Texas prospect
I mentioned this previously but it’s worth repeating. Once upon a time it was the State of Texas had two seasons---football season and spring football. It was intended to point out how popular the sport was in the state, other sports have always been played however football reigned supreme. Many in the state and elsewhere don’t believe the one sport outlook applies anymore; Texas has produced and continues to turn out an ever increasing quantity of basketball talent.

6-11 225 pound Myles Turner is one of the latest prospects from the State of Texas. Turner is rated the number 6 prospect in the Class of 2014 and a 5-star prospect by Rivals. ESPNU rates him the number 10 prospect on their list but award him 5-stars. Turner hails from Bedford Texas in the
Dallas-Fort Worth metro. There is no commitment yet however the usual suspects are on his list; Duke, Kentucky, Kansas to name a few. Keep him in your memory as he enters his senior year of high school.

“Bells”
Ken Norton was explosive in the ring; Norton once broke Muhammad Ali’s jaw in a sparing match. Many boxing historians believe he was one of the all-time greats, the difficulty his career overlapped a number of greats. His career covered the time period of Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman and others I might have omitted. Norton was never mentioned in the same breath as the other boxers, that might be the same circumstances for Walt Bellamy an NBA Hall of Fame athlete. 74-year old Walt Bellamy died over the weekend; few of you probably remember this former NBA center.

Bellamy left Indiana University and went on to a Hall of Fame career in the NBA. “Bells” as he was nicknamed was often matched against other Hall of Fame centers. Nightly he would battle against Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul Jabbar or Nate Thurmond. Bellamy played for 5 NBA teams however that is no reflection on his ability. Life-time numbers for this 6-11 225 pound center were a sparkling 20.1 points per game and 13.7 rebounds over his 14 NBA seasons. A small number of NBA players have been 20,000 point scorers; you can add Bells to that list. Rest in peace Walter Jones Bellamy.

The process to develop is different
A friend sent me an article detailing a number of NBA draft busts. I informed him I excluded Greg Oden because he’s been injury prone which I don’t think reflects on his basketball ability. I don’t intend to detail the list however the others came into the NBA with far more fanfare than they were able to produce. As for the other major league sports it’s probably a slightly different story. I don’t follow the NFL, MLB or the NHL as closely as I do the NBA, I believe the criteria for evaluation of talent is far different. As I’ve stated from time to time players are sometimes drafted in the NBA strictly on potential.

I don’t hear the term potential utilized by NFL general managers and they too have suffered a few high profile players who didn’t make it. Tim Tebow is probably the most recent example. As for baseball they have a built in farm system, it sets the stage whether the guy can play or not. If he can’t hit a curve or slider in AA baseball chances are real good he will be unable at the major league level. The same for hockey players who begin developing their skill at the junior level, by the time they are drafted in the NHL management and coaches have an idea if he can play. Just a few thoughts to consider.

“Be afraid, be very afraid”
The above quote is the Jeff Goldblum line from in the 1986 horror film The Fly. The Fly was terrifying in that movie however real life pelicans can be terrifying too (at least for fish). The New Orleans Pelicans mascot made his first appearance last Wednesday, Pierre the Pelican is very scary looking. Do you remember all the jokes last spring when it was announced the Hornets would become the Pelicans. I’ve done a little research; the pelican is a bird to be feared, not in the same manner of a hawk or eagle but they probably should be. There are a number of different species of pelicans living throughout the world.

As for the State of Louisiana it’s the brown pelican which is the official state bird. The brown pelican (and others ) is certainly no seed eating bird, *“when foraging, pelicans may fly a few feet or a considerable height over a school of fish and dive at high speed into the water, often submerging completely below the surface momentarily as they snap up prey. Although the Brown Pelican eats mostly fish, an occasional amphibian or crustacean supplement the diet.” I think a number of people have seen too many cartoon pelicans; they fail to realize the ravenous nature of this bird. Be afraid (of the pelican), be very afraid. *Wikipedia

A new player might enter the picture
The Warriors intend to move across the Bay to a new arena in San Francisco. Near the time of the announcement a 2017 opening was the target date. All was quiet on the east side of the Bay until recently when the mayor of Oakland made an announcement. She hoped a development plan to replace Oracle Arena along with the Oakland Coliseum would come into fruition. According to my research information the Warriors have played in Oracle since it opened in 1968, it was renovated in 1996. The Coliseum where the football Raiders and baseball A’s play opened in 1966. The stadium was renovated in 1995-1998. There was no dollar figure attached I could determine, even more interesting because the Warriors are the only threat might an arena only build be accomplished? Evidently the revenue produced by the Warriors must be significant to the city of Oakland and Alameda County. In the meantime I sent an article to a friend who once lived in the Bay area. He expressed doubts the San Francisco arena will be built.

He left school too early
Xavier Henry arrived on the campus at Kansas with a great deal of hype (similar to Andrew Wiggins). He left after his freshman year for the NBA many thought it was a premature move. I didn’t follow his NBA career closely so I have no idea if he had an opportunity to play; he drifted from Memphis to New Orleans to the D-League. When he signed to play on the Lakers Summer League team I said “okay.” After impressing management over the summer Henry was signed to a 1-year contract.

Two games fail to make a season but so far his totals have been noteworthy.  He’s leading the team in scoring with an 18.0 ppg average and .500 from the field. Off the Laker bench Henry scored 22 points in a win against the Clippers and 14 in the teams loss the following night versus the Warriors. This is no indication Henry has “made it” in the NBA but this I believe, he may have left Kansas too early the same as a number of other lottery picks? Even more enticing Henry is only 22-years old he may never fulfill the promise as a high lottery pick but could become a dependable everyday player.

Your opinion is yours alone----however
Doug Gottlieb CBSSports Radio explained he often provides his opinion to listeners. He further indicated sometimes he provides fact to back up his opinion. An expressed opinion is the basis for my take on Michael Wallace of ESPN.com this morning. Wallace writes the Miami Heat Index a column providing grades for the Heat and their opposition. The Heat lost their recent game against the 76ers 114-110, Wallace gave the Heat coaching staff an A for sitting Wade. “This grade goes beyond Wade. It's more of a staff-wide recognition of the collective approach the Heat took in sitting Wade on Wednesday as a precaution to preserve his health.”

How about this stat line for rookie Michael Carter-Williams. The point guard was 6 for 10 from the field, 6 for 8 from the free-throw line, 7 rebounds, 12 assists and 22 points. Wallace providing his view awarded MCW an A.  The Lakers have a similar plan to sit Steve Nash down for back to back games this season, no big deal to sit a player down.  My question for Wallace there is no justification to me for awarding the same grade for one who plays and one who sits. Just making a statement doesn’t make a great deal of sense to me. We must guess Wallace was awarded a letter grade for tests he may have missed in high school or college?

A.I.
Allen Iverson officially retired on Wednesday; prior to A.I’s retirement LeBron James offered his commentary on Iverson. “Pound-for-pound, probably the greatest player who ever played,” was LeBron’s take. Even more interesting he detailed what he believed was A.I.’s physical stature. “They say he was 6 feet, but A.I. was like 5-10½. Do we even want to say 160? 170 [pounds]? Do we even want to give him that much weight?” I certainly agree with LeBron’s assessment of A.I. I mentioned this before I believe Iverson was 5-11 and his playing weight was no more than 155 pounds he may have been even lighter.

I wish I’d said that
There are several in the media who come up with classic statements. They are so outstanding they make me think to myself “I wish I had said that.” You remember all the static when it was announced the banners and jerseys would be covered during Clipper games. I don’t tweet so I’m unsure who said it but I enjoyed it; “Maybe Doc Rivers can cover up the scoreboard?” This was tweeted immediately after the Lakers beat the Clippers 116-103 in one of the opening night NBA games. Last season the Clippers won all four games played between the two team.

Considering Kobe Bryant wasn’t in the lineup made the win even more noteworthy. Clipper fans (and Matt Barnes) have talked a great deal of smack over the summer. There is no misunderstanding from this Laker fan. I believe at least for now the Clippers have the better team this season. Acknowledging this fact I’m still not convinced after one successful season after years of atrocious play is going to translate Los Angeles into Clipper town I don‘t believe it.

He’s out for the season
It’s being reported the 76ers will sit Nerlens Noel for the season. It’s probably a good idea because speculation was he wouldn’t be able to play until February or March. One national publication claims the 76ers might be tanking in an effort to secure the draft rights to Andrew Wiggins. I cannot respond to that account I would claim I don’t believe it. As I indicated previously I have no medical background, in addition I’ve never sustained a torn ACL. Everyone looks at NFL running back Adrian Peterson and decides “if he can do it so can I.” Derrick Rose took his own sweet time returning despite the many complaints from Bulls fans. Here’s my take unless we have sustained a similar type of injury who can truly state when an athlete is ready to compete again.

Television schedule
Mizzou affirmed the balance of the schedule to be televised. All pre-season and SEC games will be available in the States two largest metro populations Kansas City and St. Louis. Of course the telecasting footprint on the Kansas City (MO) side extends into Johnson, Wyandotte and other metro Kansas counties nearby. The news release caused at least one Kansas fan to respond to the Kansas City Star. “Free at last!!! Free at last!!!! Thank God we are finally free from Time Warner's Metro Sports and now do not have to watch MIZZOU TV programming in the KC Metro area...Sincerely, A Jayhawk!!!!” This was the response from a Mizzou fan. “Evidently this Jayhawk fan must have a television only capable of picking up one channel. “ I can concur with that statement, it’s my belief the Kansas City metro cable systems (maybe satellite too) offer the ESPN family of channels, Fox Sports, SEC Network and the CBS Network. The announcement indicated the aforementioned networks would offer Mizzou basketball

Windy City basketball history
Most NBA fans probably believe the Bulls are Chicago’s first professional team; actually the Bulls are the city’s third professional team. The first team was the Stags who were founded in 1946; they were members of the Basketball Association of America. The Stags only lasted four years and the franchise was dissolved in 1950. The BAA would merge with the NBL becoming the National Basketball Association. The city’s second team was the expansion Packers; their first season was 1961-1962. A name change was made the following season, they became the Zephyrs. In 1963 the team moved to Baltimore and became the Bullets.
