BULLETIN
As I was preparing Friday's Words eye view several news sources reported the Clippers have been sold.  The report former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has reached an agreement to purchase the Clippers.  The reported sale of $2 billion dollars will set an NBA record.  As this is written the NBA is yet to confirm the sale.

Jekyll and Hyde
Many of you might be familiar with the classic novel The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Hollywood has filmed four versions of Dr. Jekyll over the years the first a silent film in 1920 and the most recent 2008. The shorten version of the story, the good doctor drinking a potion would assume an alter ego, the Hyde character was his evil counterpart. The Pacers are somewhat similar to Jekyll-Hyde we have no idea which personality emerges nightly. Wednesday evening the Dr. Jekyll version of the Pacers was evident. Facing a 3-1 deficit they rallied to win forcing a game six. They were aided by LeBron James foul trouble for much of the game. Saddled with foul trouble the Pacers managed to squeeze by scoring a 93-90 victory. We must guess it was “the home cooking” that aided the Pacers in their win. Which Pacer team shows up tonight for game six your guess is as good as mind?

The Thunder-dome or Ibaka effect?
The headline question is certainly valid for many including me. I was wrong once again; you might remember last Friday I practically declared the Thunder-Spurs series over. The Oklahoma team looks totally inept in the first two games of the series. On the other hand the team returned home for games three and four and a total flip-flop occurred. They played better at home particularly my favorite target Russell Westbrook. In the past I’ve been openly critical of the talented point guard however he’s played outstanding in the home portion of this series.

Moving Westbrook from the point to shooting guard may indeed be the key thus far. End line to end line I’m unsure if Westbrook is faster than Tony Parker however I believe he’s become Kryptonite to Parker. Finally the return of Serge Ibaka to the lineup, he only scored 9 points in the game four win but it’s the other stuff. He pulled down 8 rebounds and blocked 3 shot attempts and caused an unknown number to be missed. I’m unsure who wins the series this I do know, Durant might be the Most Valuable Player however Ibaka might be the Most Important Player to the Thunder lineup.

“Is it hotter where you are because you’re closer to the sun? “
A person actually posed that question to former NBA player Shawn Bradley. I guess when you stand 7 feet 6 inches someone might believe the question is viable.  The 7-6 Bradley last played in 2005 for the Mavs; he was the second overall pick in the 1993 NBA draft drafted by the 76ers. Bradley was expected to revolutionize the game with his promise which never materialized; he may have been an enigma to many in the NBA. ESPN.com covered Bradley in a 30 for 30 production, check it out.

Do away with the draft
The guys on TrueHoop TV (ESPN.com) want to eliminate the draft and offer us alternatives. The NBA Draft requires a make-over however I’m unsure if they changes they promote being implemented. Proposal one, “every college or international player would be a free-agent free to choose the team of their choice.” There are a number of issues with this plan I focused on one maybe you might see additional issues. I could foresee a majority of players headed for New York or Los Angeles? The NBA might be dissolved if this plan were to be adopted, less glitzy cities such as Milwaukee, Charlotte and Memphis would lose out on talent.

Proposal number two, “a team finishing with the worst record would be allowed to spend the most dollars on rookie talent.” This is probably the superior proposal and may have less potential problems. If number two was in place this past season the Bucks would be awarded the number one choice followed by the 76ers, Magic and Jazz. Both of these plans have potential flaws, Commissioner Silver has indicated the draft should be revised and it probably will eventually. We can suppose the architects of the NBA Draft had no idea teams would lose on purpose (76ers) or become permanent winners (Cavs) in an attempt to gain the top draft pick. .

Man up (or woman up)
I believe I’ve made it clear I am tired of coaches and players blaming officials for a loss. The latest to receive my stamp of criticism is Pacer Paul George.  George said. “You can’t tell me we’re not aggressive. Maybe we’re too aggressive. We’re just as aggressive as they are attacking the basket and making plays at the rim. Maybe this was just home cooking.” Just in case you missed his point the “The home cooking” reference was related to the officiating. We must assume game officials aided the Heat to create 14 Pacer turnovers. Wade didn’t have a particularly good shooting game however Bosh stepped up in his place. After virtually disappearing in the first three games Bosh contributed 25 points to his teams win. As for the Pacers Roy Hibbert he disappeared once again when he was vitally needed.  Hibbert’s total 0 points, 5 rebounds and 1 blocked shot for a 7-2 center.

“Deja vu all over again”
If you are old enough or a sports history buff you might be familiar with the above quote. For others it became noteworthy having been uttered by former Yankee great Yogi Berra. History repeated itself in a sense on Sunday night, Willis Reed the heart and soul of the Knicks was injured and expected to miss game seven of the 1970 NBA Championship. The Lakers and Knicks were warming up prior to the start and the injured Reed emerged from the tunnel with a slight limp to a thunderous MSG crowd. The game would begin and Reed would hit the first two shots he took. He would only score four points and played little in the game however Reed’s inspired effort propelled his Knicks team to the 1970 NBA Championship.

The 2014 series between the Thunder and Spurs wasn’t quite as dramatic, it wouldn’t decide an NBA Championship however game three was critical for the Thunder. The Thunder returned to Oklahoma City down 0-2 and Serge Ibaka sidelined. Reports indicated Ibaka would “miss” the balance of the series. Saturday prior to the Sunday game reports circulated Ibaka would play. The 6-10 245 pound Ibaka was in the starting lineup same as Reed in 1970. He would provide his team the same inspiration however his game was much better than Reed. Ibaka was 6 for 7 from the field scoring 15 points and snatched 7 rebounds down while blocking 4 shots. Ibaka spent 30 minutes on the floor defending and scoring against the Spurs. I forget to mention, Ibaka managed to provide inspiration to a downtrodden Thunder team.

A dispute
This one doesn’t involve embattled Clippers owner Donald Sterling. Cavs owner Dan Gilbert is the culprit this time and it began with a radio interview. During a portion of the broadcast Gilbert said; “They (Pistons owner) should take Detroit off the front of the jerseys, the team plays 30 miles away.” Gilbert is correct as far as the distance from Detroit; his statement caused a response from new Coach Stan Van Gundy. Van Gundy said; “Gilbert needs to take care of business with his team.” In this instance both parties are partially correct allow me to briefly explain. As most of you are aware the Pistons haven’t seen downtown Detroit since like forever. I’ll fast forward through history and provide a few details, the Pistons moved from downtown Cobo Arena in 1978 to the Pontiac Silverdome some 30 miles away. Seating galore existed in the Silverdome because this was a football stadium reconfigured to accommodate basketball.

The Pistons were to remain in Pontiac (MI) for the next 10 years. After the Palace of Auburn Hills was built in 1988 then owner Bill Davidson moved his Pistons to the privately funded arena where they have remained since that time. Gilbert was voicing his opinion but it wasn’t totally without merit. Gilbert grew up in Detroit even attended Wayne State University in the city. As for the distance issue The Palace of Auburn Hills was constructed during a period arenas and stadiums were built on the fringes of metro areas. At some point in 90’s we began to see a shift in arena and stadium construction as they return to downtown locations. The Pistons are probably one of the few teams left with an arena outside the downtown area. The City of Detroit’s current economic status makes it unlikely a downtown arena is built soon unless owner Tom Gores decides to spearhead an effort.

Not surprising
I don’t know about you but I wasn’t surprised at Kevin Ollie’s move. A large number of head coaching positions are open in the NBA and there is a desire by management to fill them. Ollie probably hinted he would like an NBA job but as somebody said “he’s King of Connecticut, why go to the NBA?” Ollie coming off an NCAA Championship signed a 5-year contract which should keep him in Storrs (CT) for the immediate future.

Thunder-dome

By the time you read this Game Three will be complete, I have no idea who won since this was written last Thursday and revised on Friday. I believed the subject was worth reporting due to the events. Prior to the Thunder-Heat series it was believed the Thunder might return to the NBA Championship once again. After the Spurs dismantled them in Game Two I seriously doubt they can win, we do realize now how valuable Serge Ibaka is to the Thunder.  Ibaka’s injury has certainly impacted the series but that’s not the only problem for them. The Thunder have a great home court benefit playing in the Chesapeake Energy Arena (the loudest arena in the NBA by far).  That's why I give it the nickname Thunder-dome, the question becomes will two games save their bacon?

Bad investment---are you sure?
54-year old billionaire Antony Ressler (a friend of Donald Sterling) has indicated his desire to purchase the Clippers. News reports state Yao Ming is gathering a group of Chinese investors to buy the Clippers as well as Grant Hill also pursuing investors to buy the team. They become the eighth or ninth individual or group expressing an interest in owning the team.  I might ask the question once again, “if nobody is watching the NBA or going to games why is there never a shortage of prospective owners?” I also mentioned I believe there were only two recent instances of teams remaining on the market for a long period of time. The Pistons and Kings remained on the market for a substantial period of time. In both instances the delay had nothing to do with the cost of the franchises.

"Be careful what you wish for"
A number of you are familiar with the adage above; I believe that’s what may have occurred for a number of Kansas fans if they realize what might occur.  Around this part of the country we heard plenty of negative comments about John Calipari and his one n done Kentucky teams. A group of Kansas fans let it be known they were rooting for UConn. They probably failed to take into account the meaning of an UConn win. As the evening began Kansas, UConn and Louisville were all tied with three NCAA Championships. With the 2014 NCAA win UConn moved ahead of the Kansas Jayhawks. We can argue tradition all we want bottom line which team has the most trophies?

Someone will not be drafted

I finally checked out the early entry NBA Draft list; there are 37 names on the list. Consider this, there are only 30 NBA teams if we include college seniors and international players you see the number issues. If you are an underclassman and you leave school early you better be darn sure you are going to be drafted.

Speaking of the draft
Now that the Cavs have secured the first pick in the 2014 draft what’s their next move? Although it logic might dictate trade the pick for a veteran quality player that’s not likely to occur. The present Cavs roster is a collection of talented but poorly coached players. Management has attempted to build a contender post-LeBron but they keep shooting themselves in the foot. Did I mention the coaching issue, how can you fire Mike Brown re-hire him and fire him after but a year on the job? The Cavs will be paying Brown for the next four years since he signed a five year contract. Will they chose Andrew Wiggins, Joel Embiid or shock us as they did last season. You remember Anthony Bennett don’t you the 2013 number one pick who barely saw the floor? This time the Cavs will choose Andrew Wiggins who will provide an immediate impact unlike Bennett. If the experts are correct Wiggins should make Cavs fans forget the team ever drafted Bennett.

"Big Man" University
Georgetown has a history of developing talented big men in fact it might be considered “Big Man” University. The Washington D.C. school has produced a number of NBA centers going back several years, alum include Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo, Alonzo Mourning. In more recent years the school has produced Pacer Roy Hibbert and Piston Greg Monroe. The list of Big Man centers may have convinced Jesse Govan to commit to Georgetown. Govan is a 6-10 263 pound center, Rivals.com list him as a 4-star prospect in the Class of 2015. He's a New York City talent from the borough of Queens. .

The future is set----isn‘t it?
Did you realize the 76ers have not one, not two, not three------never mind? A team’s draft position often changes according to sources; I believe this account to be fairly accurate. The 76ers have seven draft picks in the 2014 NBA Draft, can you remember a team ever having that many choices in one draft, I don‘t? In the first round the 76ers have two lottery picks number two and number ten, in the second round are five additional picks. Second round choices often fail to gain a roster sport however with the total number surely one of the athletes will develop into a talent. On the other hand one of these second round choices might be packaged in a trade and play for another team. Perhaps the 76ers tanking last season will work out successfully for them.

Michigan State versus the Pistons

It was reported (unconfirmed) Tom Izzo was offered the Pistons job prior to Stan Van Gundy. Izzo turned them down; he may have done it strictly based on salary. The USA Today story indicated Izzo is making $3,893,954 annually. It’s likely the Pistons were not going to top that figure for a “rookie” coach even one named Izzo.

He de-committed?
With Mizzou’s coaching change it was expected they might lose players. Namon Wright was one of those prospects; he was recruited by the departed Frank Haith. At the time the coaching change was announced Wright kinda sorta indicated he was looking elsewhere besides Mizzou. Although Coach Anderson met with him in Los Angeles Wright was allowed to de-committ. After checking his possibilities Wright made his decision official.

Last Friday he made his Mizzou commit official, this 6-4 shooting guard from Los Angeles is headed to Columbia (MO) in August. We gain and we lose, freshman point guard Shane Rector is transferring. This Bronx (NY) native was concerned with future lack of playing time and he might be correct in his assessment. Playing time at the point most likely will be divided between Hawaii transfer Keith Shamburger and sophomore Wes Clark.  On the other hand it could be somebody else.

How do I feel?
I shared my thoughts earlier with Laker Nation on the Lottery. I admit it I was disappointed, I didn’t expect the Lakers to be awarded the number one choice but I thought it might be higher. After checking the available talent I believe they could still draft a quality player. We have no idea who this player might be but no worry. With the developing Kevin Love story a number of Laker fans have suggested trading the pick-----no way. Love would be a valuable addition but trading the future for the present scares me.

As for the Laker pick I have gone back and forth since the Lakers were assured they would be in the lottery. I’ve gone from Dante Exum to Marcus Smart seeing the need for a point guard. I said the Lakers should draft center Joel Embiid if his back issue causes his stock to dip. I’ve changed again; I’m now focused on Noah Vonleh (Von-lay) 6-10 240 pound Indiana power forward. Vonleh posted very good numbers at the recent NBA Draft Combine. The potential talent level of the 2014 draft is so deep even drafting in the seventh position the Lakers should gain a quality player whoever that might be.

Cali looks to be a great deal better
We were led to believe Steve Kerr would be the next head coach of the Knicks. Kerr had the blessing of President and Phil Jackson a coach he played for while a member of the Bulls. The finishing touch was for Kerr was to sign on the dotted line, whoa there is a holdup. Kerr must have held a concern regarding the apparent instability of the Knicks front office. Despite Jackson being in place one of the definitions for dysfunctional is K N I C K S.

Jeff Van Gundy served as head coach from 1996-2001, since that time the team has played for nine head coaches. The count includes Herb Williams who served as interim coach for one game in 2004 and 43 games in 2005. Knicks owner James Dolan might have played a larger role than many realized and California may have looked better to Kerr. I can only speculate based on the manner this story developed, we will probably never learn the complete truth why Kerr turned the job down.

Conspiracy theories anyone, anyone?
Question, how come conspiracy theories in the NBA only involve the Knicks (the Patrick Ewing draft) or anything involving the Lakers.  Why is it we never hear any conspiracy talk surrounding the Cleveland Cavaliers?  Anybody besides me attempted to figure out how the Cavs could be lottery winners three out of the last four years?

Will she become an owner?
Oprah Winfrey has made it known she would like to purchase the Clippers. She would be the majority owner along with two male partners. Sale of the Clippers continue to play out and a resolution is yet to occur. There are no current female owners; to my knowledge Winfrey would become the first NBA owner. Winfrey would not have the distinction of being the first female; three women in the modern era have owned sports franchises. Two women have owned Major League Baseball teams and two owned NFL franchises. Violet Bidwell Wolfner inherited the NFL Chicago Cardinals after the death of her husband in 1947; she owned the team until her death in 1962. Note: the Cardinals would later move to St. Louis and then to Phoenix.

In April 1979 Georgia Frontiere’s husband died and with 70% ownership of the Los Angeles Rams she assumed ownership. Years later Frontiere would move the team to the city of her birth St. Louis. Marge Schott’s ownership was totally different; she was a widow too however her husband had no stake in the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. Schott a Reds fan utilized her financial resources to purchase the team. We conclude with Joan Whitney Payson Mets owner. She and her husband were minority owners of the New York Giants, when the franchise moved to San Francisco they sold their shares in the team.  She and others were among the petitioners to the National League for a replacement team. This replacement team would become the New York Mets. Mets. Payson served as team president from 1968-1975. Dates; Wikipedia

Another name change
For the second year in a row an NBA team has undergone a name change. Last season it was the Hornets who became the Pelicans. By the time you read this the Bobcats will be the Hornets, are you confused? Quick refresher, Tom Benson owner of the New Orleans Hornets wanted a name more identified with the City of New Orleans hence the Hornets would become the Pelicans. In the order portion of the nation the Bobcats franchise and name have never been particularly popular with Charlotte fans. Owner Michael Jordan petitioned the NBA for a name change from Bobcats to Hornets. The Hornet name left Charlotte for New Orleans, last season that franchise would be re-named the Pelicans. I hope I‘ve unconfused you with this explanation. .

Forgive me please
Pacer fans I apologize upfront, I am never sure which Pacer team we are going to witness. Late Sunday morning I held conversations with a number of NBA fans. I said; “I have no idea which Indiana team will show up, January’s version or the most recent edition.” I believe the Pacers are a very good team however they are quite capable of self-destruction. Circumstances prevented me from viewing the entire Heat-Pacers game, what I was able to see almost shocked me. I expected the Heat to immediately take charge which failed to occur.

The Pacers got out to an early lead which they never relinquished. The game might appear to be closer than the 107-96 score might indicate. The Pacers were clearly in control and at no point did I believe the Heat would win the match. Can the Heat shot 51% from the floor and 42% from the 3-point line again? We can expect the Heat to play much better in the second go-round; can they still win the series? I wish I could look into the future and inform you of the winner; at this point I’m not sure.

I wonder what’s wrong with his head
The reference is Andrew Bynum; we now discover the Pacers didn’t request a physical. In addition we learn he’s no longer a member of the team. I would be among the first to admit he fooled me, when the Lakers drafted him I was excited. I saw this 7 foot 285 pound center as the second coming of Shaquille O’Neal. Even more interesting was his comment when asked the comparison between Shaq and him. He said confidently “I hit my free-throws.” That portion of his game was superior to Shaq he’s good from the line. In the lock-out shortened 2011-12 season Bynum may have put up his best numbers.

In 60 games he averaged 18.7 ppgs and grabbed 11.8 rebounds, he blocked almost 2 shots. We might believe injuries have impacted his career and they have however his head has curtailed his career even more. He put in a lackluster season in Cleveland then spent a year on the 76ers roster. He was on the roster in name only since he spent the year in Philadelphia without playing a single minute. Bynum was traded to the Pacers near the middle of the 2013-14 season; he played limited minutes and now appears to be history with this latest team. Bynum is 26 years old and his NBA career is likely over.

Another conspiracy theory is born
Have you heard the latest NBA conspiracy theory? It’s the explanation for how the Thunder was able to win game five and the series. “The NBA wanted the Thunder to win the series because MVP Kevin Durant plays for them. It‘s justifies Durant winning the Most Valuable Player award.” Think about the statement, the NBA would purposely exclude the 2nd largest television market (Los Angeles) in the nation for the number 45 (Oklahoma City). I’m unsure about you but it doesn’t make a great deal of sense to me.

A “football” school
The following are my thoughts however I must give credit to Kevin Harlan for providing me a basis for formulating my opinion. Billy Donovan has built a basketball powerhouse at Florida despite the fact football dominates. “A kid chooses Kansas, Duke or North Carolina even Syracuse because those schools are viewed as basketball schools” was the Harlan comment. Donovan has won back to back NCAA Championships and his Florida team made the Final Four this season. He’s not 50 years of age yet his teams have won nearly 500 games.

This former Providence point guard had “a cup of coffee in the NBA” playing the 1987-88 season with the Knicks. From there he went to Kentucky serving as an assistant coach, from 1989-1994 he was Marshall’s head coach. In 1996 Donovan was hired at Florida where he remains to this day. A few weeks ago a discussion centered on Bill Self and his apparent lack of developing NBA players by one NBA scout. I said at the time I believe it is a college coaches responsibility to develop good teams and not NBA players. Donovan has managed to do both coach successfully and send players into the NBA.

NBA Draft Combine
The annual NBA Draft Combine was held last Thursday and Friday in Chicago. A significant number of prospects were in attendance, missing in action were projected top five picks Andrew Wiggins, Joel Embiid and Jabari Parker. The collegiate prospects were run through a series of drills to measure their skill. . Vertical jump, shooting drills and agility tests were just a few of the number. I take delight in funny stories and Mavs Coach Rick Carlisle provided one. He was questioned by ESPN’s Andy Katz on the types of questions he ask players. Carlisle said; “I ask them who do you believe you play like in the NBA?” Carlisle stated one prospect informed him; “I’m a cross between Dwayne Wade and another superstar.” Who the other superstar is we don’t know, he never named him.

Father-Son
We’ve discussed sons who followed their fathers as basketball players. The Barry’s’ sons of Rick come to mind first. As for the coaching ranks it’s been a little different story, I was unable to locate much information on father-son coaching combos. This is certainly not intended to be a complete list however it represents information I could uncover. We could begin with Georgetown and the two Thompson’s, John and John III. The elder Thompson coached the Hoyas from 1972-1999, compiling a 596-239 record (.714). His team won the 1984 NCAA Championship. John III took over the helm in 2004 after serving as head coach at Princeton. John III combined career numbers are 295-146 (.669).  It was reported earlier Richard Pitino has followed his father (Rick) into the coaching ranks. The son is in his first year as coach at Minnesota; at this point we cannot say ya or nay on his coaching ability.

As for other sons who followed their dads the success rate has been suspect. If you are old enough you might remember Ray Meyer placed DePaul basketball on the map. The elder Meyer coached the legendary George Mikan (1942-1946) and led DePaul from 1942-1984. Joey Meyer took over at DePaul in the fall of 1984 and was the head coach until his dismissal in 1997. The younger Meyer later coached in the NBA-D League attaining limited success. We covered Pat Knight son of Bobby a few weeks ago. After succeeding his dad at Texas Tech he was later fired and resurfaced at Lamar. Pat lasted three years at Lamar where he was also terminated. As you can see the sons we profiled have not been able to come up to the level of their fathers. Maybe Richard Pitino might want to consider employment in another field.

Did you read?
The story in USA Today regarding coaches salaries? It prompted a discussion on sports talk radio here on Kansas Coach Bill Self. The radio host general observation was “why go to the NBA when you (Self) can earn more at the collegiate level.” These guys should have read the story I wrote previously on college coaches. College coaches (Bill Self included) are not a priority at the NBA level. Occasionally the NBA lures a Brad Stevens from the college ranks but they are the exception. Hey radio guys the NBA doesn’t want Self no matter how successful his record or how great a coach you believe he is.

Draft lottery
The event known as the Draft Lottery will be held May 20th. The draft position of all lottery teams will be decided on that date. Who the Lakers chose may not be decided until draft night in June. I’ve questioned “who should the Lakers draft?” If they have the opportunity to draft center Joel Embiid they cannot pass on this opportunity. Embiid is raw; it will take time to develop his game that means Kobe will be a memory by the time Embiid is ready to play. The guy is 7-feet tall and has unique offensive and defensive skill around the basket. If not Embiid the next position to consider is point guard. Steve Nash is nearly 41 and playing on one leg. Kendall Marshall has exhibited talent but the immediate fix may be somebody else and that somebody might be Marcus Smart.

Draftexpress.net and NBADraft.net have the Lakers choosing point guard Smart of Oklahoma State. 6-6 190 point guard Dante Exum is also in this draft as well. Exum appears to have the size and tools, the only downside are the competition he faced. He will have emerged from the high school ranks in Australia, that fact raises questions regarding Exum. As for Smart he’s a legitimate 6-4 and a rock solid 225 pounds. After two years at Oklahoma State the only downside might be his shot and maturity at times. Smart is not the swiftest on the planet but he’s adequate. If I’m Mitch Kupchak and Embiid is available I choose him otherwise it’s Smart even though Exum might be available.

Bits n Pieces

This bears repeating once again. The Pacers are the number one seed in the East but they certainly don’t play like a number one seed.

I’ve always liked Doc Rivers but he should quit moaning. The Clippers had game five in the bag; they let it get away from them. There is no need to blame the officials because they failed to make a call in your favor.

Have you noticed the same college teams always have the best recruiting class year after year? The teams switch positions but one through five remains much the same. Who are they, Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, Louisville and Kansas?

As Gomer Pyle would say “Surprise, surprise.” Instead of heading east Steve Kerr is headed west, he becomes the Warriors coach. After missing on this one the next move is yours Mr. (Phil) Jackson.

The headline fooled me

The ESPN.com headline read; “Bulls try to lure Thomas to team.” When I first read it I immediately thought of Isiah Thomas. I read the article and it dealt with the Bulls attempt to lure Kurt Thomas out of retirement prior to the end of the regular season. Although Isiah Thomas spent his NBA career as a member of the Pistons home was Chicago. He grew up in the Windy City prior to heading to Indiana to play for Bobby Knight.

We’ve discussed issues he’s faced since he unlaced his basketball shoes. Since leaving the head coaching position at Florida International he’s loudly hinted he wants a job in some capacity. Currently Thomas serves as one of the rotating studio analyst for NBA TV. Thomas has suffered a fate similar to that of Kareem Abdul Jabbar difficulty with gaining basketball employment.

A change at the top
Oregon State chose to go another direction; they terminated the contract of Craig Robinson. No presidential pardon is forthcoming for the brother-in-law of President Obama. In six years Robinson was never able to turn the program around, his most successful team finished 21-15 two years ago. His won-loss record while leading Oregon State was 93-104.

Who was he rooting for?
Did you see the exchange between Denzel Washington, Spike Lee and LeBron James? The television camera caught the trio prior to game four exchanging pleasantries at Barclays Center. We realize Washington lives in Southern California now however were you aware he was born in and grew up in Mount Vernon (NY)? For those who might be geography challenged Mount Vernon is about 25 miles or so from Brooklyn. As for life-long Knicks fan and Brooklyn resident Spike Lee could he be at the game to root for the Nets?

“Stupid is a stupid does”
You remember the headline is from the movie “Forrest Gump” but it could just as easily apply to the Cavs. Why would the Cavs re-hire a coach they fired previously? Did Brown perform a feat(s) worthy of re-hire? Perhaps he gained wisdom while employed by the Lakers, wisdom not displayed the first time around. Maybe the majority of questions must be addressed by Brown. Did financial considerations impact a Cleveland return. Maybe the bottom line Brown is stupid for taking the position again. I don’t believe Brown is a terrible person, he knows basketball, it’s my belief his best work lies as an assistant coach. With the Mike Brown firing there are now seven head coaching positions open, you can send your resume (not in any order) to the Pistons, Warriors, Knicks, Wolves, Lakers, Jazz or Cavs.  NOTE: Reports indicate Stan Van Gundy has been hired to coach the Pistons.

This is gonna continue to get messy
Mess might be an easy term to apply to the present situation. My first thought Commissioner Silver acted swiftly and forthright regarding Donald Sterling. The resulting aftermath is a totally different matter. Shelly Sterling is stating; “she wants to remain owner of the Clippers.” Even more interesting her side indicates Coach Doc Rivers is okay with Shelly taking over the team. I believe if an owner named Sterling or a family member is in charge of the Clippers in the fall there will be problems. I have come to the conclusion ownership of this team has become an ego question for both Sterling’s. The team was purchased in 1981 for $12.5 million and is estimated to be worth between $500 and $700 million dollars.

The drama created will ensure the Clippers remain headline news despite what might they might accomplish on the basketball court. There is one party who’s escaped blame in this fiasco----that is former Commissioner David Stern. Stern had no direct involvement but was aware of prior legal issues involving both Sterling’s. This mess is an embarrassment to the NBA and its too bad for the league I think is the best in professional sports. Defenders of Donald Sterling have indicated he was taped illegally in the initial tape. Okay you may be correct, what about the Anderson Cooper interview on CNN? The rambling sometimes disjointed interview may not prove Sterling is racist; it does prove he’s over simplified the facts and has made Magic Johnson the problem.

A point guard
Mizzou lost a junior college point with the coaching change, it's always a good idea to have a veteran presence at the point.  Mizzou played Hawaii last November I don’t remember much about the game other than Hawaii lost the game.  This past weekend “5th year” point guard Keith Shamburger tweeted he would complete his collegiate career in Columbia (MO).  If we check his shooting numbers he was average from the floor but managed 5.4 assists per game for Hawaii.  If Shamburger is allowed to transfer how Mizzou will be affected is unknown at this point.  It is interesting he chose Mizzou over Auburn and Ohio University.

Superman versus Superman
Shaquille O’Neal TNT analyst continues to offer critical remarks regarding Dwight Howard‘s game. Feuds sometimes have strange beginnings; I believe the Superman persona may have been the basis for this one. When he arrived in the NBA in 1992 Shaq chose a number of nicknames for himself one being Superman. Howard arriving in 2004 also laid claimed to the nickname Superman. The two combatants have gone back and forth over the years covering a variety of issues many such as whose Superman unrelated to basketball. Shaq has stated on occasion there’s been little growth in Howard’s game during the course of his career.

Howard has relied more on his physical prowess than growing his game. The player we witnessed in the 2009 Finals is basically the same we saw in the 2014 playoffs. Physical talent aside there’s been little mental growth to his game. I wrote at the time and I still believe Howard left the Lakers because he didn’t want to be the man. Kobe has maybe two years left; Howard would have become the man, he talks the talk but fails to walk the walk. Okay you say Shaq did the same thing leaving the Lakers too. I believe Shaq left because he couldn’t be the man with a young Kobe hitting his stride.

He did it
Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook is talented; I hope I’ve made that clear in the past. My main complaint is game decisions, it appears at times he‘s more concerned with his stats than his team. My other complaint his wardrobe styling’s but that’s another story for another time. Friday night Westbrook had a “Chris Paul” game as he aided his team earn a 118-112 win over the Clippers. The Westbrook numbers 23 points, 13 assists and 8 rebounds while shooting 7-14 from the floor. Maybe the most important component of his game only had 2 turnovers in 37 minutes of action. Now to discuss Westbrook’s wardrobe------on second thought the time is not right.

The departed
The above title has no connection whatsoever with the movie of the same name.  It’s an explanation why an athlete left the program. Although they didn’t advance very far in the NCAA’s Kansas basketball was successful this past season. The only evident weakness was a reliable point guard. The number of point guards Coach Self utilized all had “holes” in their game. None was truer than that of Naadir Tharpe; his three years were filled with uneven play on both ends of the court during his term.

Most likely Tharpe’s actions off the court probably caused the greatest concern for Self. The university recently announced Tharpe was not returning to school for his senior year. He would be transferring to be nearer his infant daughter who is ill in Massachusetts. One door closes another one opens, Kansas announces Devonte Graham made a commitment to attend Kansas. Graham is a 6-2 175 pound point guard and a 4-star Rivals prospect.

I’m not a hater are you?
A number of Heat fans have accused me of being a hater; this is partially based on a recent story written on the Heat. The abysmal season the Lakers have suffered has been covered often by me over this past season. During much of the glory years of the Lakers I heard plenty of commentary “I hate the Lakers” which is the PG version. I don‘t ever remember attaching Laker Hater to someone making critical remarks about my team.

I‘ve acknowledged the Heat as NBA Champions without getting excited about the accomplishment, I‘m not a fan of the team. Why must I be forced to be a fan because the Heat is your favorite team? I believe the Heat may or may not win the championship this year; they may or may not win in 2015-16. It’s my belief the 2015-16 season will conclude their championship run, I could be wrong but I could be correct.

This is an interesting take
It appears the NBA is not for everyone even 7-footers. Frank Kamisky had originally indicated he was an early entry candidate for the NBA; he removed his name and will return to Wisconsin for his senior year. Kamisky said; “The NBA looks boring” he went on to add additional detail further expanding his belief. He’s not going to read this however I wish I could say this short statement. “Frank despite what you might perceive the best basketball (boring or not) is still played in the NBA.”

Help wanted!
In the “not surprise” news Rick Adelman will not return to coach the Wolves. His wife is ill and it was reported several weeks ago he might retire. Also in the “not surprise” news the Knicks terminated Coach Mike Woodson. As Phil Jackson stated one person cannot be blamed for the Knicks season. He’s correct; unfortunately the finger is always pointed at the coach. In “surprise” news Ty Corbin will not return as coach of the Jazz, those of us outside of Utah heard no rumblings.

Perhaps the 25-57 season may have been the basis for Corbin wanting out. As for the Lakers everything is quiet so far, I titled the moves not surprise and surprise. I must add “shocked and surprised” if D’Antoni opens training camp in the fall. ADDENDUM: I wrote of the Lakers coach prior to his resignation. I cannot really consider Mark Jackson being fired a surprise. Rumors had been circulating since January he was on the hot seat.

Where in the world is----------
The Republic of Cabo Verde or Cape Verde? It’s a nation comprised of 10 islands located about 350 miles from the West Africa coast. Other than geography what else does Cape Verde offer us? Well among other valuable commodities might be one Walter Tarvares. Tarvares is a 7-2 265 pound center who is projected to be a second round draft pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. He’s tutoring in the ACB League in Spain, the term tutor is used because despite his 22 years he’s only been playing basketball since 2010. According to reports to date Tavares is more a rim protector than an offensive threat. You and I know how much the NBA covets players with defensive skills.

I’m sure they might ask
The Wizards may have one of the tallest front lines in the NBA. They have 6-11 240 pound Marcin Gortat at center and 6-11 250 pound Nene Hilario at the power forward. At small forward they have “little” Trevor Ariza at 6-8 and 225 pounds. I’m sure fans of the Wizard might ask the question “you wait till playoff time to discover a fact we‘ve known all along?” I offer no excuses other than I plain overlooked them, no further excuses offered. It’s my belief now the Pacers may be in trouble despite winning on Wednesday. To step out that shaky branch one step further the Wizards front line could give the Heat problems. We know height presents issues for the Heat that’s the reason the Pacer made the move for Bynum. In addition the Heat signed Greg Oden to aid their height issues.

MVP
I missed some but I called this one correctly months ago, I stated Kevin Durant would be the 2013-14 MVP. You might believe Durant receiving this honor would create no controversy-----right? Well you guessed wrong this is a sample of what I’ve heard. “They had to give the award to Durant. “Who are they and why was it necessary to “give” the MVP to Durant? Might I remind detractors the award is regular season it has nothing whatsoever to do with post-season play. LeBron James has won four regular season MVP awards, was 2013-14 a down year that caused him to lose out?

LeBron is still LeBron, I have no difficulty tagging him a super-star at the same time he has no monopoly on the award. I have mentioned on more than one occasion the difficulty I perceive Durant has playing alongside Westbrook. While Westbrook was on the injured list Durant took the Thunder on his shoulders and led them despite the fact Westbrook was on the injured list. Don’t give me that; “they had to give it to Durant” he won because he was more valuable to his team than LeBron was this past season.

Too bad
The SEC/Big 12 Challenge was announced earlier this week. The Mizzou Tigers will travel to face the Oklahoma Sooners; the Florida Gators will be on the road facing the Kansas Jayhawks. It’s too bad the matches couldn’t have been the two long-time rivals Mizzou-Kansas, I can hope can’t I?

He’s talking
Steve Kerr has met with Phil Jackson and no decision has been announced yet. Kerr has no previous coaching experience, should he be offered the position of head coach he’ll venture into foreign territory. Kerr played for Jackson while a member of the Chicago Bulls and has experience with the triangle offense. Kerr has served as President of Basketball Operations and General Manager for the Suns, he‘s been an NBA analyst for TNT on two separate occasions.

Looking for an owner?
Commissioner Silver’s announcement the Clippers were to be sold caused all kinds of strange and usual stories. Probably the strangest one circulating the day after the press conference the Clippers were headed to Kansas City. Who would own the team was never made clear. Magic Johnson purchasing the team was quickly denied by Magic. Also mentioned as potential buyers were boxers Floyd Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya, it should be noted the two inquires were separate and not intended to be a partnership.

On the other hand medial mogul Oprah Winfrey’s interest was to partner with David Geffen and Larry Ellison, all three billionaires. There appears to be no shortage of potential owners for the Clippers. Of course that makes for another question, if the NBA is such an awful business venture why are multiple buyers always standing by. Without researching the question I can only think of three or four instances an NBA franchise lasted an extended period on the market. There were circumstances not directly related to finance which allowed those teams to remain “for sale.” .

Not totally surprising
We should have figured this might occur with a coaching change. This past Monday Mizzou received a verbal commitment from D’Angelo Allen a 6-6 small forward. 6-8 Jakeenan Gant remains committed despite the fact he was a Frank Haith recruit. Former Mizzou shooting guard Ricky Kreklow may be headed back to Columbia.  6-4 combo guard Kevin Punter Jr. after committing last month to Mizzou is now headed to Tennessee. 6-5 shooting guard Namon Wright signed last September has now de-committed.

Playoff basketball
This is written prior to the start of the Clippers-Thunder series, I’m anxious to see it. I suppose the Thunder should win provided they can reign in Russell Westbrook. One of these days Westbrook will “play under control” which occurs infrequently. The guy is super talented it just appears he forgets T-E-A-M play. UPDATE: The Clippers torched the Thunder 122-105, as for the point guard duel. Westbrook scored 29 points and dished out 4 assists and shot very well, that’s the good. Westbrook turned the ball over 6 times compared to Chris Paul’s 2; he dished out 4 assists to Paul’s 10. Add-on Paul scored 32 points on top of 12-14 shooting and had only 2 turnovers.  Westbrook is not the only guilty party he is the point guard, the extension of the coach on the floor.

Discussing NBA coaches
I listened to a recent conversation that could have only occurred in the Kansas City metro. The hosts were discussing the possibility of Bill Self being courted by the NBA specifically the Thunder. Most of us are aware Self grew up in Oklahoma however the radio guys forgot one fact although Self is a highly successful coach he is a college coach. Above I noted college coaches who are reported to be under consideration to coach the Lakers. I’m really unsure if there is any truthfulness to the report. I believe many Kansas fans will consider me a hater that is certainly not the case. Few coaches have emerged from the collegiate ranks and tasted success at the NBA level.

It’s been mentioned previously John Calipari and Rick Pitino were awful NBA coaches, so was Lon Kruger and Mike Montgomery. SMU‘s Larry Brown is the only coach anyone can name whose managed success at both levels. He remains the only winning NCAA and NBA Championship coach in history. Without research the only other coach that comes to mind who was successful at both levels is the late Jack Ramsey. Dr. Jack won an NBA championship (Blazers) after arriving in the NBA from St. Joseph’s. He won 234 out of 306 games, a .765 winning percentage. Maybe the radio guy was just intending to generate this type of dialogue

Speaking of coaches
The Nets-Raptors game was on at the time our family walked into the restaurant. In addition to dinner conversation we discussed this game and other NBA news. We briefly discussed the Laker search for a new head coach. A member said; “Kobe will only play ball for Phil Jackson,” here I go again defending Kobe. I would not disagree with anyone Kobe is difficult but I sense he will play for any coach he respects. I’m not going to compile a Kobe list of coaches he respects but I think it would also include Coach K. I do believe there were coaching issues with both Mike Brown and D’Antoni.

“Hired to be fired”
The above expression is ancient; it’s the explanation coaches are often at the mercy of management even winning ones. Last year it was Lionel Hollins, this year it was Mark Jackson. The represent coaches who fall into conflicts with management. In the case of Jackson he leaves with a 121-109 record the Warriors made the playoffs two out of the three years he was at the helm. In addition their record improved each year.

2011-12     23-43
2012-13     47-35
2013-14     51-31

Rookie of the Year
The 76ers had a awful season, I doubt if anyone will disagree with that statement. Despite the record Michael Carter-Williams was a standout, enough of a standout he became 2013-14 NBA Rookie of the Year. The numbers for this point guard, 16.7 ppg, 6.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists a game. .

He's the first
D'Angelo Allen a 6-6 185 pound small forward was in Columbia (MO) over the weekend.
From what might have first appeared bad becomes good, the recruiting concern.  Associate head Coach Tim Fuller had been recruiting Allen so that certainly worked in the favor of Mizzou.  Allen a Texas native (Dallas) is the first of what is hoped will be a continuing number of talents to the Mizzou program.  Somebody in the athletic department was thinking it might be good for Fuller to remain a member of the coaching staff.

He’s becoming a legend
Blood does not flow throw Damian Lillard’s veins; I believe its ice water. By now I hope you’ve had an opportunity to see his 3-point buzzer beater that sunk the Rockets. I’ve maintained for a time Weber State may have been one of the few schools willing to offer Lillard a scholarship.  We fast forward four years to the 2012 NBA Draft, the draft contained a number of players from high profile institutions.

Weber State and Lillard were probably not in the count. Blazer scouts begged to differ with the general consensus; they had seen him play and projected him as a potential talent. The team made him the 6th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, this 6-3 195 pound point guard was later honored as 2013 Rookie of the Year. In 2014 he made his first NBA All-Star team, his future is certainly on an upward trend.

Part II
Rocket fans your better than that, I’m referring to the email responses I read in the Houston Chronicle. One letter in particular; “They didn’t start the clock until he (Lillard) was already shooting.” Another writer referred to “home town time keeping,” a reference to the game being played in Portland. These letters and others caused me to review the last few seconds of the game again. 0.9 seconds remained when official play resumed.

I had no stop watch however my thoughts went back to the ‘04 Laker-Spurs playoff series. The Spurs defending NBA Champions were upset as Fisher tossed in a 3-point shot with 0.4 left to win the series. As for Lillard he broke off a double screen and hit a 3-pointer from the left side of the court. It appears a number of Rocket fans have purchased tickets on the Conspiracy Theory Bus Line and have climbed on board. In addition they forget the referees must review the shot before it’s ruled an official field goal.

The search begins
It could be George Karl, Byron Scott or Lionel Hollins or somebody else. The somebody else could be college coaches Kevin Ollie or John Calipari. I’m referring to D’Antoni’s replacement as head coach. My first choice is Lionel Hollins ex-of the Grizzlies. Hollins strictly because he thinks defense first one of the principle issues facing the Lakers. In second place Byron Scott, former Laker and veteran coach. Scott has a mixed record very good while coaching the Nets only average at other stops. George Karl, I’ve never be a big-time Karl fan however the guy is a winner. I believe (check me please) Karl’s had only one or two losing seasons at a number of NBA stops.

I suppose Michigan State’s Tom Izzo and Duke’s Coach K. could make the transition to the NBA somewhat trouble-free. Neither I believe is in a hurry to leave the collegiate ranks. Sitting in an outside position may be Iowa State’s Fred Hoiberg; he’s got NBA connections as a player and in the front office of the Wolves. Management indicates they are taking their time selecting a replacement head coach. Taking time doesn’t concern me based on the success that three of the last four coaches had not named Jackson.

Change at the top
Lakers Coach Mike D’Antoni has resigned, details are sketchy at this point. The small amount of information so far indicates the Lakers declined to pickup the fourth year of his contract. Did he resign because the team failed to honor the option year? My hope, Jim Buss checks his ego at the door after all he hired Mike Brown and D’Antoni. History says Buss had Phil Jackson waiting while he hired the other guy.

He’s the last to commit
The last high profile uncommitted high school prospect has committed. I watched ESPNU as Myles Turner a 6-11 240 pound stretch four announced he would become a Texas Longhorn. Turner hails from Bedford Texas a suburb in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro. Prior to his decision I speculated (incorrectly I might add) Turner was headed to Kansas. He’d eliminated all contenders with the exception of Texas and Kansas. A rumor had circulated he wanted to attend Kansas but was waiting for a Joel Embiid decision. Once Embiid declared for the draft it was believed Turner was headed to Kansas.

Trivia
The University of Central Missouri at Warrensburg has changed names several times through the course of time. Warrensburg Teachers College became Central Missouri State which morphed into the University of Central Missouri. Name changes aside the three most successful basketball programs in the nation can state one of their coaches came from the Warrensburg school. Emerging from an earlier time was Phog Allen, he coached at Warrensburg Teachers College from 1912-19. He would be hired by Kansas and served as head coach from 1919 through 1956.

Allen had one of the longest tenures as basketball coach in history. Allen’s 1952 Kansas team won the NCAA Championship. Tom Scott coached Central Missouri State from 1938 to 1946. He left for North Carolina and coaching the Tarheels from 1946 till 1952. We conclude with Joe B. Hall who coached Central Missouri State from 1964 through 1965 left to become an assistant at Kentucky. He became head coach in 1972 and left the helm in 1985, his Kentucky team won the 1978 NCAA Championship. As you can see the three schools with the most NCAA wins can thank the Warrensburg school.

A short list
Donald Sterling continues as owner of the Clippers; it appears from the commissioner’s comment that might not be for very much longer. If the NBA forces Sterling to sell the team he’ll join a unique list of sports owners. Owners have been suspended however few have been forced to sell their teams. In fact I was reminded former Yankee owner George Steinbrenner once received a life-time ban which later was suspended. The following account represents a list of modern era owners “forced” to sell their teams.

From 1981 through 1983 the Cleveland Cavs were owned by Ted Stepien. The owner made several controversial actions, bizarre trades and public statements led to the NBA taking action.  History will state “he” decided to sell the team truth is the NBA forced Stepien to sell. Marge Schott once upon a time owned the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. The time period was 1984 through 1999, she too suffered suspension prior to selling the team. Schott a lighting rod for controversy was actually suspended twice before “deciding” to sell the team.

Where is the offense?
Okay I admit at the beginning I’m second-guessing a portion of this story. The Bulls traded Luol Deng in January; they may have feared losing this talent to free agency. In my view he represented one of the few offensive threats other than Rose on this team. The Bulls made the move despite the fact their main man and offensive threat Derrick Rose was sidelined. I’ve just finished viewing them lose the series against the Wizards four games to one, the losing Bulls scored a meager 69 points.

No argument from anyone the Bulls play some of the best defense in the NBA as for scoring the ball that‘s another story. Bulls Coach Tom Thibodau is a defensive specialist; his team desperately needs to develop an offensive game besides Rose. Maybe the offensive player is already on the roster however I’m unsure of that. They could look toward the draft, free agency or a trade. Going into this series I believe all thought the Bulls would win, somebody forget to inform the Wizards. Wizard fans this is not my intent to disrespect your team they were clearly the superior team in this series.
