He’s in a hurry
We are guilty of tossing out the term superstar far too often but that is exactly what I intend to do right now.  The Pelicans Anthony Davis is on his way to that term being applied in fact he’s in a hurry. Opening night against the Magic his stat line read; 26 points 17 rebounds 9 blocked shots and 3 steals. This 6-10 220 pound power forward will not turn 22 years of age until March meaning his game can only continue to grow. Davis did just about everything the Pelicans asked of him, there is no truth to the report he sold popcorn during half-time

He’s an idiot!
An acquaintance knowing my allegiance to the Lakers and Kobe posed a question to me. Larry said; “For years ESPN built up Kobe Bryant and now it appears they are trying to tear him down---why?” I confess I watch ESPN television and read ESPN.com stories more than any other sports news source. It seems to me Fox Sports, CBS Sports and others often repeat stories originating from the “World Wide Leader.”  I can only speculate as to the reason why---ratings. Besides this issue I will make a further statement. From this point forward I will never comment on any future account ESPN’s Henry Abbott reports. I have come to the conclusion Abbot is a hater and an idiot, it’s not worth me continuing comment on anything he writes or reports.

As for the “Carmelo doesn’t want to play with Kobe story” Carmelo responded by claiming the story has no legs. Later Dwight Howard voiced a similar statement; “me leaving for Houston had nothing to do with Kobe Bryant.” So much for the “Inside sources” of Abbott the village idiot. We can add ESPN’s Colin Cowherd’s name to the idiot list, he goes on the air defending Abbot. Cowherd claims “we are attacking the wrong person, 7 or 8 general managers plus an insider working for the Lakers claims Bryant is a detriment to rebuilding the Lakers.“ Their beliefs are their own however I agree with TNT’s Reggie Miller, he said on Tuesday “they need to step forward and identify themselves.” At the time Abbott writes an iincendiary story and fails to identify sources he should be prepared to absorb all the bumps and bruises that follow.

A world of change
Lithuanian Arvydas Sabonis arrived in the NBA as a 31-year old rookie. The political climate of the day prevented the 7-3 Sabonis from coming to the U.S. to play. Although he was skillful injuries robbed him of the mobility he demonstrated as an 18-year old. One skill that remained evident was his passing skills. He was one of the best passing big men. Age and injuries contributed to a shorten NBA career however he was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011.

History will not repeat itself with one of his sons; Domantas has arrived on our shores at age 18. Domantas is not as tall or has as much bulk as his dad; he’s 6-10 and 215 pounds. He’s enrolled at Gonzaga as a freshman and will display his basketball talent during the 2014-15 season. This is no assertion of an NBA career for Domantas it’s just another basketball story of interest to several of you.

Bits n Pieces
A friend asked about Jack Karapetyan red shirt freshman, see Karapetyan is transferring from Kansas State. He asked me; “You suppose they (K-State) asked him to leave?” I said probably so, I have no evidence to prove my conclusion. I imagine there may have been a sit-down with the coach. Karapetyan may have been told he would receive limited playing time.

I was asked;“whose gonna win the NBA Championship?” I said; “I’m not sure Cleveland may be a sentimental favorite but don’t count the Spurs out. After all they are the defending champs.” I then stated; “As for the NCAA Championship I truly have no idea who would have expected UConn to win it all?”

Laker fans in the Eastern and Midwest Time zones were greeted by devastating morning news.  Most went to bed on Tuesday night believing the Rockets would win game one they had increased their lead to double-digits in the third quarter. Rising this morning Laker fans were informed promising rookie Julius Randle had suffered a fractured tibia in the fourth quarter of the game. Reports indicate surgery will be performed next week; no speculation exists on a return date.

Many don’t realize Tyreke Evans of the Pelican was groomed for the NBA. He was raised by three older brothers who “trained” him as a youth to play the game. Evans was the 2010 NBA Rookie of the Year that first year after being drafted by the Kings. The summer of 2013 Evans was traded to the Pelicans and continued his steady if not spectacular production. Although Evans can play the two it appears Coach Monty Williams will utilize his talent at the three this season.

WE ARE THERE!!!!
The NBA season started last night.  The collegiate season is on the horizon, a number of teams will begin play in approximately two weeks.  .

Makes no difference to them
Mizzou left the Big 12 four years ago for the SEC that was the beginning. From that point on Kansas University has refused to schedule a game with Mizzou. The two teams still share a state border but that’s about all anymore. I have a great deal of respect for Bill Self as a coach however I believe he’s off-base on this subject. It should be noted a number of schools have changed conferences but appear to hold no animosity toward former rivals. The account that follows details former rivals who continue to play one another. They believe continuing to schedule the rivalry is more important than conference affiliation.

There may be other schools which may have been omitted or just overlooked. UConn and Georgetown former Big East rivals will renew their series rivalry although both are now in separate conferences. The two will play a home and home series beginning in 2016. They are not the only former rivals to renew a series, Rutgers and Seton Hall earlier renewed their former conference series with home and home games. I hope you see why I believe Bill Self and the Kansas Athletic Department is in the wrong for its refusal to schedule Mizzou. It would seem because Kansas holds an edge in all-time wins why not “guarantee” your team a couple of more wins.

“Don’t bite the hand that feeds you”
It may just be me, I’ve never believed in trashing my employer in the public arena. Yes I’ve had numerous complaints over the years of my employment, complaints which I shared with fellow employees. Notice I said “share with fellow employees”. I’m unsure if they may have shared my statements with their family, friends and maybe the media. I can state with conviction I always defrayed negative comments in all instances with non employees. From the outside most of us have no idea of the inner working of a business or an NBA team? I’m old-fashion but I believe because my company was loyal to me I owed them a degree of loyalty. In addition the salary paid me allowed me to pay my mortgage keep my lights, water and heat/air conditioning functioning.

Jeannie Buss questioned on the ESPN report “an inside source claims nobody wants to play with Kobe.” Jeannie said and I paraphrase; “I intend to investigate the matter and any employee making that sort of statement has no place with the Lakers.” Okay I’m going to respond to those defenders of free speech, this employee certainly has the right to his opinion and his view. There is a difference; he or she is an employee of the Lakers which means public statements are the responsibility public affairs. My former company had a standing order; “Should you receive a telephone call from a member of the media it should be directed to the public affairs office.” Disagree with my view if you wish that’s how it works whether it’s corporate America or the NBA.

Justice??
The headline jumped out at me; “Dante Cunningham struggles to clear his name.” I missed earlier news reports the incident occurred over six months ago. I’m not going to detail the story you can read the entire account somewhere on the net. Briefly former Wolves reserve Dante Cunningham was arrested on a domestic violence charge last spring. The police responded to a fabricated story by the victim. Fall out from the incident Cunnigham no longer has a job and is searching for employment.

NBA teams are avoiding him in lieu of the Ray Rice incident. I pointed out earlier the issue of domestic violence issue might become double-edged. There will be individuals who will fabricate stories such as this for effect. Innocent parties might be forced to suffer simply due to an argument; once the police are contacted (in the instance of athletes) the story “grows legs.” It is difficult because many read the initial story and fail to discover the truth.

Bits n Pieces
Speaking of characters how could we forget TNT broadcaster Charles Barkley? His quotes as a player followed him right into his television career. “I don't hate anyone, at least not for more than 48 minutes, barring overtime." Another Barkleyism; “I'd never buy my girl a watch... she's already got a clock over the stove.” The number of Barkley quotes is far too numerous to list them all.

Oregon State hired Wayne Tinkle to replace Craig Robinson. You might ask as I did Wayne who? The 6-10 Tinkle played for Montana and then 10-years in the CBA and Europe. In 2001 he was hired as an assistant coach at his alma mater Montana moving over to the head chair in 2006. Tinkle’s teams compiled a 97-39 record in the Big Sky and 158-89 overall.

In 1983 the Rockets drafted 7-4 Ralph Sampson, the following year 7-foot Hakeem Olajuwon joined him also being drafted y the Rockets. Most probably believe this was the first instance of a basketball Twin Towers---not so. It was a different era then; Jacksonville University was unknown to most of the nation until their 1970 NCAA run. Anchoring the team was 7-2 Artis Gilmore and 7-foot Pembrooke Burrows most likely the first basketball Twin Towers.

Kobe Bryant says he feels 70 years old after 18 years in the NBA. Love him or hate him you knew you would get 100% from Kobe. I could think of several players past and present nowhere near his age that played at 75 or 80%. It wasn’t lack of talent on their part more like lack of effort.

See it
ESPN is a multi-billion dollar corporation they need no promotional help from me. At the same time I believe I voiced my share of complaints regarding the “World Wide Leader.” Why not toss a few kudos in their direction for a worth while production. I believe the latest 30 for 30 project directed by actor Michael Rapaport deserves praise. The documentary is titled When the Garden was Eden a look at the championship run of the 1970 Knicks.  The program is worth an hour and a half of your time; check it out if you have an opportunity. .

It’s over
Just in case you haven’t heard the details late Thursday evening the Steve Nash era came to an official end. It’s been determined a back injury will sideline him for the 2014-15 season. Several have stated Nash should have retired four or five years ago that’s up for debate. What’s really sad this two-time MVP is going out with a whimper unable to retire on his own terms? A series of continuing injuries have forced retirement on him although it’s not yet official. Nash hasn’t hung up his basketball shoes however its unlikely he’ll return to the game he loves at age 41.

Nash will be elected to the Hall of Fame just as soon as he’s eligible. Since I’m a glass half full guy this could be a blessing in disguise. Jeremy Lin will now move into the starting lineup he will be backed up by veteran Ronnie Price. In all likelihood Jordan Clarkson was going to make the final cut anyway, he can now become the back up at the point or shooting guard. In addition one of the young guards currently in camp might also make the final cut. Will the Lakers suffer at the point most likely but consider this Nash was never the speediest guy in the NBA or a great defender.

Mind-boggling
If you are a certain age you realize cheating in a variety of forms occurs in college football and basketball programs across the nation. The result of an investigation at North Carolina is staggering. Over 3,000 students received A’s or B’s in a sham class, it appeared the only requirement was a single term paper. The report indicated 1,000 or so of the number were non-athletes. Last spring former Tarheel basketball player Rashard McCants brought out into the open the impropriety of UNC basketball.

McCants claimed the coaching staff was aware of these issues. I expressed skepticism at the time MCCants news first surfaced because I believe in basketball Coach Roy Williams. I’m less familiar with the football coach who’s no longer at Carolina. I’m going to stick strictly to the basketball issue; UNC won two NCAA Championships during this 10-year period. Should the championships be vacated by the university or the NCAA? That’s the question for you and others to answer.

Is this worth debating?
Who was better player Steve Patterson or Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul Jabbar)? The first question might be who in the world is Patterson? He was the back-up to Alcindor and would become the starting center after Alcindor graduated. Patterson had limited success in the NBA mostly as a back-up; you may ask where am I going with this story? With Steve Nash lost for the season and Allen Iverson retired my two “favorite” media guys were debating which player had the greater NBA career.

As for Patterson and Alcindor it’s quite clear on the collegiate and NBA level which was the more talented player and had the greater level of success on the basketball court. As for Iverson and Nash why is this even an issue to be debated? Both players had outstanding NBA careers; it’s likely both will be elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame. Both were able to provide leadership that allowed their teams to play at a higher level. Finally why is this an issue even to be debated?

Reason #4 why I love college basketball
I love college basketball for its historical reasons. Do you realize at one point in time the college game held a higher position with fans than the pro game? College basketball was “big-time” in the 1940’s and 1950’s; the pro game by the fledgling National Basketball League (founded in 1937) and the Basketball Association of American (founded in 1946) were on the level of today’s D-League. Madison Square Garden was the capital of college basketball serving as host of the first post-season National Invitation Tournament in 1938.

Bits n Pieces
The Cavs won the game 107-98 however I believe the Bulls won the pre-season game. Derrick Rose scored 30 points on 12-18 from the floor in addition to grabbing 5 rebounds. Could we say he resembled the roadrunner cartoon as he zipped up and down the court.

We know the Pacers Paul George will likely miss the 2014-15 season. The compound fracture he sustained in the FIBA trials forced him to the sidelines. Did you see the video of him on the court shooting recently? The reason for the likely miss George claims he will play at some point during the season.

Bo knows how to win, not that Bo (Jackson) I’m referring to Wisconsin Coach Bo Ryan. He might be the most successful “unknown” coach in the nation. We might drop 3 or 4 names of successful coaches Ryan would probably not be mentioned.  His Badgers finished 30-8 last season and in the NCAA Final Four, his lifetime coaching record reads 704-224 with a .759 winning percentage.

I’ve mentioned previously I am okay with the Kim Anderson hire at Mizzou. I do have an issue I didn’t discuss it’s age, the coach turned 59 earlier this year. He’s 11 years older than the departed Frank Haith and 5 years older than Mike Anderson. Should Anderson prove successful we cannot see a long tenure at the helm, he may face mandatory retirement due to age.

Got any spare change?
We received news majority Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov wanted to sell his share of the Nets along with his interest in Barclays Center. Now minority owner Bruce Ratner is reported to be also interested in selling his share of Barclays. Are you interested in becoming a team and arena owner? Your financial prospectus should be mailed to: Barclays Center 620 Atlanta Ave., Brooklyn NY 11217. Just in case you want to telephone the office number is (917) 618-6100.

Hopefully it’s okay
The NBA didn’t begin with Michael Jordan and the Bulls; LeBron James is driving the lane in the footsteps of Connie Hawkins and Dr. J. The acrobatic moves around the basket you’ve witnessed from Kobe were first made famous by the Lakers Elgin Baylor in the ‘60’s. I know the calendar says its 2014 and soon it will turn to 2015. Despite this fact my belief is you should always know your history whether it‘s the NBA or your nation. I hope this doesn’t’ sound as if I’m stating we must live in the past that is not the case. My hope is to familiarize you with the giants (literally) who paved the way for Tim Duncan, LeBron, Kobe and others. From time to time I will delve into the past for a story on one of the early talents in the NBA or ABA. My hope is you find it interesting and enlighten.

Double standard
If you check one of the stories I wrote on September 3rd you’ll read what several might consider an indictment of Auburn’s Bruce Pearl. I decided to re-visit the report because it might be perceived Pearl gets criticized by me and I allowed former Mizzou Coach Haith an easy escape. Before reading this account consider this fact, the Mizzou Tigers are one of my favorite teams. That was certainly not my intention; Mike Greenberg of ESPN’s Mike and Mike stated “Both cases were similar.”

His statement proved he never investigated both cases in their entirety. Both coaches agreed to violations of NCAA rules and both were admonished. It’s my belief (I could be wrong) if the organization had as much evidence on Haith as they did Pearl the penalties would have been similar. Tennessee fired Pearl and the NCAA imposed a 3-year coaching ban on him, Frank Haith continued in his position as head coach and was given a 5-game suspension. If the cases were the same as Greenberg indicated why was unequal justice dispensed?

“Keep your day job”
Ever heard the statement aimed at you or someone near you? Almost always the person has attempted a talent beyond their skill level. A recent example occurred during Midnight Madness in Lexington. Rapper and writer Drake has adopted Kentucky basketball in addition to his role with the NBA Raptors. During a portion of the activities Drake demonstrating his basketball prowess shot an air ball, Coach Cal didn’t escape. After the crowd was entertained the coach took the microphone and in true rap fashion said; “Let’s ball” dropping the microphone on the stage while heading for the court.

Say what?
In an effort to assist the progress of his surgically repaired knees the Knicks Amar’e Stoudemire is taking red wine baths. Stoudemire indicates his wife had read an article detailing the benefits of this procedure and how it increases blood flow. Stoudemire claims it appears the treatment is working thus far. There is no truth to the report he may be feeling improved after drinking a couple glasses of wine before pouring the remainder in a wine-water blend.

Number 10
He’s 71-years old now; generations of Bulls fans don’t even recognize his name. If they were to encounter him standing 6-8 they would assume he may have once played basketball. His number 10 jersey hangs in the rafters of the United Center although he never played in the building. His jersey was the second retired in Bulls history, the first (number 4) belonged to long-time Jazz Coach Jerry Sloan. Among number 10’s many accomplishments he was a 3X NBA All-Star, in addition he “was the Bulls offense” long before Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen ever arrived on the scene. He scored nearly 14,000 points during a stellar 12 year NBA career the bulk spent with the Bulls.

Bob “Butterbean” Love arrived in the NBA from Southern University in 1966 and closed out his career in 1977. Today Love works as Director of Community Affairs for the Bulls however he overcame a problem which stalled his early retirement years. Love had endured a stuttering problem from his youth, some might find that difficult to believe however during his playing days it was easier to avoid media interviews. He had to work at overcoming this problem and in addition to working for the Bulls he’s become a motivational speaker. A shout out to number 10 for his accomplishments on and off the court.

I’m nostalgic
I admit it I love for Andrew Bynum to return to the Lakers. Not the Bynum that wandered through Philly never playing. Not the Bynum who put in brief appearances in Cleveland and Indiana, no not him. How about the Andrew Bynum that shot nearly 60% from the floor while snatching 12 rebounds and scoring nearly 19 points a game his last season with the Lakers. I remember it as if it was yesterday; the Lakers were making all kinds of overtures toward free-agent Dwight Howard. Everybody and their brother realized Bynum must be traded to turnover the “keys” to Howard.

I remember writing on several occasions I wasn’t pleased with the possible move, I believed (then) Bynum’s ceiling was higher than Howard. Both are no longer Lakers, Bynum was traded and Howard’s choice was to leave. Reports are Bynum will take off the 2014-15 season rehabilitating in preparation for a return the following season. He would only be 27 years old when he returns; you don’t find too many 7 foot 285 pound “true-centers” anymore. I’m being nostalgic but I hope Laker GM Mitch Kupchak might take a chance, a 1-year laden incentive contract perhaps.

Who’s on the hot seat?
The college page on Yahoo.com contained a list of 10 coaches the writer believed were on the hot seat. I read the article but believe the writer left a coach off the list. The coach I believe might be included is Mike Anderson of Arkansas. The 2014-15 season will be Anderson’s fourth year at Arkansas time enough for more than a second round NIT appearance.

Mid-America talent
The numbers are small by comparison to other states and in several instance even larger metro areas. NBA/ABA talent who managed pro careers after attending high school in the State of Missouri or Kansas. The State of Missouri has produced 52 pro players over the years; the hometown of the athlete is in parenthesis. Current active Missouri NBA players are Bradley Beals (St. Louis) Wizards, Alec Burks (Grandview) Jazz, Tyler Hans borough (Poplar Bluff) Raptors, David Lee (St. Louis) Warriors, Otto Porter (St. Louis) Wizards, Anthony Tolliver (Springfield) Suns.

The State of Kansas has sent 31 athletes into the pro ranks although none are currently active in the NBA. Journeyman Earl Watson was active until last season when he played for the Blazers, the point guard had a 13-year NBA career. Watson attended high school in Kansas City Kansas prior to UCLA and the NBA. Watson currently serves as an assistant coach with Austin Toros of NBA D-League. NOTE: There are NBA players who attended Kansas or Mizzou however they are not included in the count. The totals represent players who graduated from Kansas or Missouri high schools. www.basketball-reference.com

Class of 2016
Mizzou may or may not be the ultimate destination of Tyler Cook. The St. Louis native visited the campus recently; Cook is 6-8 and 240 pound forward in the Class of 2016. Rivals.com list Cook as a 4-star prospect.

“Isn’t that special”
Comic Dana Carvey a.k.a. The Church Lady was a character he originated as a cast member of Saturday Night Live. For those unfamiliar with the routine Carvey dressed as an old lady and would conduct interviews with selected cast members or the guest host. At some point based on the response Carvey would look directly into the camera and state; “Isn’t that special."

That phrase might be said by several Big 12 coaches based on Curtis Shaw’s statement during Big 12 Media Day. Shaw the Big 12 coordinator of officials said; *We did such a poor job last year that by the end of the year everything was a block.” He was discussing the block/charge rule by officials. “I don’t think we got half of them right last year.” Shaw indicates officials will do a better job during the 2014-15 season, I believe Big 12 fans and especially the coaches would expect improvement. *Kansas City Star

Here I go again
I don’t care if you hate Kobe Bryant, its okay. Don’t make untrue statements to me; I’m going to politely call you out. This friend and I held a discussion the other day on the Lakers coaching change. I informed him “I feel better all ready with the coaching change, Byron Scott said if you don’t play defense you will find a seat next to me.” I further stated; “Despite the tenor of Scott’s speech he’s not likely to sit Kobe down.  My statement became an opening for my friend. He said; “Kobe doesn’t play much defense anyway.”  I said; “No---untrue, last year he only played six games but Kobe’s made the All-Defensive Team on more than one occasion.”

Kobe has been a 9X All-Defensive First Team, he’s been a 3X All-Defensive Second Team. Consider this fact Kobe is about to begin year 19 in the NBA. He wasn’t a full time player until his third season and he only played 6 games last year. If we subtract the years he wasn’t full time plus last season it’s 15 years. Kobe Bryant has been an NBA All Defensive player 12 of the 15 full seasons he’s played. I believe my friend will come better prepared next time before making a similar type of statement regarding any player.

Reason #3 why I love college basketball
I love college basketball because of the coaches. Unlike the NBA for the most part collegiate coaches remain at their respective schools several years. Once upon a time we identified with the athletes, now with the one and done rule athletes are quickly history. We often don’t have an opportunity to discover them before they are gone. The good coaches remain at their respective schools for years. You say Duke basketball and the next thought is Coach K., same for Carolina basketball. Once it was Dean Smith and over the last few years its become Roy Williams. They have changed coaching jobs but Rick Pitino is Louisville and John Calipari Kentucky Blue, Florida basketball is Billy Donovan. If we ever return to the days of four year players perhaps we can once again identify with the player rather than the coach.

The Wild, Wild West
We all might be surprised however the general consensus is either the Cavs or Bulls will emerge as Eastern Conference champions. It’s possible the Nets or Wizards could as well however neither is likely. As for the Western Conference the race has a number of contenders. The defending champion Spurs must be favored however there are others to consider. No more free agents but we cannot foresee any additional trades at this point. How about the Clippers, early on the saga that became Sterling didn’t impact their effort, it may have at playoff time. They have (I believe) one of the best active coaches in the NBA, they also have viable team, can Doc Rivers get them over the hump? How about the Thunder, they have Durant however Russell Westbrook remains a question for me, it’s not his talent I question it’s his head.

The Rockets still appear more of a group of talented individuals than a team. The Howard-Harden tandem must prove to me (and maybe you) they can compete for a championship. The Warriors could win the West if all the elements are in place yet questions remain. Will new Coach Steve Kerr manage as success move from the broadcast sidelines as Mark Jackson? The others, Mavs, Blazers, Pelicans and Suns will be in contention but possibly fall short. Although I couldn’t seriously forecast any team as Western Conference champions the conference will be far better than the east won-loss wise. NOTE: This was written prior to Kevin Durant’s injury, this most likely will further impact the 2014-15 Western Conference race.

It’s not a done deal
Atlanta’s mayor indicated that “several perspective possible owners had stepped up.” Of course he was referring to the NBA Hawks and the desire to purchase the majority shares owned by Bruce Levenson. Former player and current television analyst Chris Webber and the Webber Group have been identified as one of the potential buyers. As the headline indicates nothing is final however it would be interesting if Webber joined Michael Jordan. Webber would become the second former player to become majority owner of an NBA franchise.

Greed
No argument from me the NBA regular season is far too long, so are the MLB season and the NFL. As for the NBA we are hearing discussions about reducing the number of games. A reduction would benefit owners, players and fans. Hit in the wallet would be those whose income is directly affected by working the games. The ticket staff, concession personnel, the clean-up workforce and others I may have overlooked. Owners and fans may be able to sustain their lifestyle with a little less as for the others?

“I don’t get no respect”
Rodney Dangerfield‘s “I don’t get no respect” will be trotted out by me from time to time I deem appropriate, this is one of those times. As for sports respect depends on the portion of the nation. This morning on the Dan Patrick radio program a question was posed; “Who would you rather have in the World Series the Royals or the Yankees?” The conscience was the Yankees would draw the greater number of television viewers no argument from me. I thought for a moment on the NBA championships. The Spurs have been consistent winners for well over a decade; do the national media give them the respect they deserve probably not?

One writer pointed out; “They (Spurs) have never won back to back championships.” Is that a true basis for giving any team its just due? The Knicks and more recently the Nets have over the years received more media coverage than the Spurs. Considering the fact neither has won anything got any ideas? Should we suppose this might occur due to locality of the Knicks and Nets? The Celtics (17) and Lakers (16) have won almost half of the NBA’s Championships. Based on this we could understand why they might be a draw if nothing else for historical reasons. As for the Knicks and Nets receiving more coverage than the Spurs it’s location (New York), it certainly hasn‘t been based on court production. .

Is this possible?
Would you believe Michigan State and Kentucky were both losers regarding a potential prospect, in addition they lost out to Marquette. Both were attempting to enlist the services of Henry Ellenson, he’s a 6-10 230 pound power forward. Ellenson verbally commits to Marquette in early October and he‘s a Rivals 5-star prospect and the number 17 prospect in the Class of 2015.

“Mama there goes that man”
Former broadcaster, player and Coach Mark Jackson coined the phrase used as a headline. We are unsure if he originated the phrase however its’ believed he was the first we first utilized it. Mark Jackson played for the Knicks but this is the other Jackson Phil whose president and general manager of the team. The “other” Jackson has been known to stoke controversy in the media. We are not sure when it first began however stories first began surfacing while Jackson served as coach of the Bulls. His feuds with General Manager Jerry Krause may have begun the trend; this pattern continued as Jackson jousted with fans and media while coaching the Lakers.

Jackson upset many a Sacramento fan by referring to the city as a “cow town.” Kings fans began a pattern of bringing cowbells to the arena and ringing them during periods of the game. For the last several years director, writer and actor Spike Lee has been the self-appointed number one Knicks fan. Lee might be number one however Phil Jackson doesn’t think much of his effort. The PJ quote; “Spike is an avid Knicks fan who doesn’t know anything about basketball.” Lee is producing a documentary on the triangle offense the basis for the PJ quote on the other hand we know PJ’s history in manipulating the media and all concerned.

He remains a favorite
All last season I was probably the one Laker fan defending Pau Gasol. I saw many of the letters wanting him traded and several wanting him amnestied, I took them all in stride. Besides injury I blame a portion of his poor season on Mike D’Antoni and his inability to utilize the talent of Gasol effectively. Sure Gasol has aged but he’s not exactly over the hill, want proof? The Lakers have had 25 coaches in their history the 67-87 record D’Antoni recorded is the worst of the bunch. That probably seems hard to believe with Mike Brown serving as head coach previously, the Lakers were 42-29 during his tenure. Back to the subject Pau Gasol, it’s my belief and mine alone he was one of the keys in them winning the 2009 and 2010 NBA Championships.

Need proof of Gasol’s remaining talent, the Bulls have no problem signing the 34-year old free-agent. They must believe he has “some gas left in the tank” they even dumped Carlos Boozer in order to secure the services of Gasol. I believe a portion of Durant’s issue with a number of Laker fans they wanted more than he was capable of delivering. They believed as a 7-footer “he should rebound the ball better” or “he plays power forward but certainly isn’t dominant, he‘s more a finesse player.” You must wait awhile on this next statement to prove me wrong. Although Gasol is no longer a Laker I believe his number will eventually be retired, wait and see. I‘ll still root for the skillful Gasol unless he‘s playing my Lakers.

Bits n Pieces
I guess I can’t really complain about chasing championship rings. Shawn Marion late of the Mavs recently signed with the Cavs. I’m unsure who is pulling the strings at this stage however it appears management is not returning to the previous LeBron years. They intend to surround him with as much talent as they can draft/trade or sign as free agents.

Think John Calipari is telling the truth? The Cavs were reported to have offered him the head coaching job prior to hiring David Blatt. In any event Calipari “Says he wouldn’t have left his Wildcats job even if he knew LeBron was headed home to Cleveland.” Why leave when you are more popular than any elected official in the State of Kentucky.

Speaking of LeBron did you see or hear the story on the Cavs pre-season game versus the Heat. I was viewing the game however didn’t see the incident. During a portion of the game it was reported LeBron set a “pick” for former teammate Norris Cole. I’m unsure of Cole’s tenure with the Heat however I believe he’s been there at least three seasons.

LSU had a unique NBA Draft history much earlier than Kentucky. In 1990 Chris Jackson (later to become Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf) a 6-1 point guard was drafted number 3 in the first round of the 1990 draft. A year later 7-0 285 pound Stanley Roberts was chosen 23rd in the first round.  One year after that 7-1 325 pound Shaquille O’Neal was made the number 1 pick in the 1992 draft.

I hope I’m not repeating an earlier story, I’m watching the pre-season game between the 76ers and Celtics. Seeing Celtics Coach Brad Stevens on the sidelines cause me to reflect on the story. Stevens on a third date with his wife (while both were in college) took her to a high school basketball game.

He’s hurt
Injuries have always been a part of the game; you name it the NFL, MLB or the NBA. Teams are often impacted by the injury list; others might accuse me of rationalizing but look at last years Laker team. They were decimated by injuries however they may have overcome a portion of the injuries if an effective coach had been in place. Training camp and the injury bug has appeared once again. The Lakers Nick Young hurt, verdict out 6-8 weeks. The Thunder has lost Kevin Durant to a broken bone he’s out 6-8 weeks too. Swaggy P. led the Lakers in scoring last season while Kevin Durant had an MVP season. Which team should we suppose is hurt the most by its missing in action player?

2015 NBA Draft
As this is written the NBA is yet to set the date for the June draft. I’m not rushing things but decided to check out a couple of mock draft sites. The two I follow most frequently are remarkably similar. NBADraft.net list Emmanuel Mudiay who will have a year under his belt playing as a pro in China. Duke’s Jahlil Okafor is listed as the number one pick by DraftExpress.com. Who becomes the number one choice, a 6-5 190 pound point guard or a 6-11 277 pound center? On the other hand Kentucky’s Karl Towns or Cliff Alexander at Kansas could move up and become that number one pick. Neither Victor Oladipo (Magic) nor Cleanthony Early (Knicks) were number one draft picks but there is a point here. Both players managed to raise their draft stock their last season in college.

Times up…….
The Grizzlies waived 2008 number two draft pick Michael Beasley. After a summer of tryouts including my Lakers he’s headed to China to play basketball. Drafted by the Heat he’s played for the Wolves, Grizzlies before returning to the Heat last season. Lakers. No one argues Beasley is lacking in talent his downfall has been lack of maturity. He may have been on his best behavior with the Grizzlies however history may have played a factor in his failure to gain a roster spot.

Beasley’s immaturity issues surfaced early at the NBA rookie orientation camp. Beasley signed a 1-year contract with the Shanghai Sharks, this will provide him the opportunity to return next summer and begin an NBA quest again. A note, the Sharks are owned by former Rockets center Yao Ming. As for Beasley he will return after the season and will still only be 26-years old. That’s time to resurrect his career if he can manage to curtail past behavior issues in the rear view mirror.

Would somebody, anybody contend
Fans and alum of the Kansas Jayhawks will think I’m haitn’ on their team far from it. Big XII basketball coaches in their annual pre-season poll projected the Jayhawks to win the conference championship. If their prediction proves to be correct this would be the 11th year in a row the Jayhawks have either won outright or tied for the regular season conference championship. Over this time frame we could say Kansas has been really good or during that same period the Big XII is not as good as advertised.

Bits n Pieces
Reports are circulating Mikhail Prokhorov may be exploring selling the Nets. According to reports Prokhorov owns 80% of the Nets and 40% of Barclays Center, both purchases made in 2010 for $223 million dollars. Could the reported $1 billion dollar sale of the Clippers be a factor in his decision?

I have the utmost respect for former Rockets center Hakeem Olajuwon. “He has tremendous (Dwight Howard) confidence. He is looking for an MVP year,” Olajuwon said. “Just the demeanor, the confidence level, the way he played last year, I expect something great from him this year.” I believe in Olajuwon, On the other hand Howard must provide me proof.

This is pure speculation on my part, you’ve read reports Thon Maker the 7-footer from Sudan by way of Australia is headed to Canada. Maker came to the U.S. to play basketball his guardian has now decided in favor of a high school north of the border. As an “International” athlete now he might duplicate the move of Australian Dante Exum. Exum wouldn’t have been eligible for the 2014 NBA Draft having just graduated high school, as an international athlete he qualified.

They made a decision
I’ve mentioned the dilemma facing Kansas City what to do with Kemper Arena. The arena once served as home court for the Kings prior to their Sacramento move. A number of Big 8 and later Big 12 Tournaments were held in the building. The 1988 NCAA Championship pitting Kansas and Oklahoma was in this building. Kemper served as a venue for a number of musical concerts over its lifetime, the 1976 Republican Convention was held in the building. The 40-year old building has been replaced by the newer, more easily accessible downtown Sprint Center. Kemper built near the old stockyards served the American Royal Rodeo until recently.

Even the rodeo has move to Sprint along with the circus, artists flew over Kansas City on their way to other cities. AEG’s management has guaranteed significant concerts. I almost forgot Sprint is the home of the Big XII post-season tournament plus a number of collegiate games. The recommendation by the Kansas City Council is to demolish the building. I’m okay with the decision despite the historical significance attached to Kemper. It’s certainly not a done deal however the wrecking ball is steadily headed toward the old stockyards to tear down the building.

He’s cutting back
December 5 1979 DePaul played Wisconsin; it was the first college game telecast by ESPN. The play by play announcer for the game was veteran Joe Boyle; he’s been retired from broadcasting for a number of years. Providing color commentary for that very first game was Richard John Vitale commonly referred to as Dickey V. As we dawn on another collegiate season Dickey V. will provide commentary on a number of games. He indicates he’s cutting back his schedule.  Vitale’s broadcast schedule has steadily increased since that first game in 1979 to as many as 40 a season. A generation of college fans probably don't realize this 2008 Naismith Hall of Fame honoree once coached the game he loves.

He’s been a Laker fan for awhile
We’ve heard stories Player A is drafted by Team B, this is how the initial interview goes. “I’ve always wanted to play for Team B this is the team I rooted for when I was kid.” Laker rookie Julius Randle made a similar pronouncement on being selected by the team. NBA TV began profiling teams for the upcoming season and was providing coverage of the Lakers. The host had the studio crew display a photo of 10 or 11 year old Julius Randle. The youngster was sporting a Kobe Bryant number 8 jersey in the photo.

Nine more years
We’ll have the same crew for nine more years; the NBA renewed the television contract with Turner Broadcasting and ABC/ESPN. The agreement becomes effective in the 2016-17 season and extends through 2024-25. The New York Times is reporting “the monetary amount of the agreement will be $2.5 billion dollars per year.” I’ve stated previously never dispute financial compensation to players, teams or a league; I take this stance because we often have incomplete data to foster an accurate conclusion. I do however believe it’s within my outlook to dispute stupidity.

“NBA still exists? a joke of a league, full of criminals, no defense. There was more parity in the 90s. nowadays it seems the same team wins every year. NBA should take a note from MLB and NFL”” How about this gem; “wonder if whites quit watching or going to the NBA games.what would happen?” You can agree or disagree with the report however there is no requirement to pose brainless questions. Should we remind writer number one the number of NFL players’ currently suspended or pending judgment? As for the second writer if you enjoy a sport why deprive yourself of the opportunity to either see a game in person or view it on television.

I try to be careful
Often stardom is evident at a very young age that was the prediction for Lew Alcindor who later would change his name to Kareem Abdul Jabbar.  He displayed above average skill as an 8th grader.  Michael Jordan may have been into baseball more than basketball at a comparative age. You remember the story of him being “cut” from his high school squad, no Hall of Fame career for him in basketball correct? Where am I headed with this rant you ask, a 7-footer is scheduled to visit a major college the problem he’s playing at a junior college.

A number of significant athletes have emerged from junior colleges and gone on to have successful junior and senior years at a 4-year institution. I have no facts to back this statement up however memory says most of them have been guards or forwards. There are few stories of 7-footers emerging from a junior college to have stellar careers. Often grades are not a detriment to attending a 4-year school often for big men it’s being unable to transfer their skill to the next level.

Chicago’s NBA connection
If you hold a conversation on the NBA and Chicago the belief is the discussion might center on the Bulls. That’s easy to understand, the Bulls (1966) if you are under a certain age the Bulls are the only NBA team they have ever known. Most people even residents of the Windy City realize another NBA team once existed in the city. The 1961-62 season saw the expansion Chicago Packers come into existence, they were awful finishing the initial season with an 18-62 record. The only bright spot may have been drafting the late Walt Bellamy. The 6-11 center nicknamed “Bells” would go on to become the 1962 NBA Rookie of the Year. Bells would go on to become a 20,000 point scorer in the NBA although he only spent the 1963 year in Chicago. The franchise didn’t trade him immediately they just changed team names and moved.

The 1962-63 season the Packers became the Zephyrs and you might ask why the name change? It was said the nickname of the team reminded many of the Chicago Stockyards. The basketball team “stunk” so badly and the name connection to the stockyards was too much. As for the relocation the Zephyrs franchise moved at the end of the 1963 season headed for Baltimore. The 1963 NBA Rookie of the Year was forward Terry Dischinger who was drafted by the Zephyrs. The Zephyr name disappeared too replaced by Bulltets when the team moved to Baltimore. Much later the franchise would move once again this time to Washington D.C. where they currently reside. With the negative play on the court the Packers-Zephyrs had a rare feat back to back NBA Rookies of the Year.

A name change was required-maybe?
The Sacramento Kings can thank the baseball Royals for their name or maybe not. In 1948 the Rochester (NY) Royals came into existence, they played in the city until 1957 when they located to Cincinnati (OH). From 1957 through the 1972 season Cincinnati remained home to the team, dwindling attendance caused the owners to look in another direction.  The Royals moved to Kansas City in 1972, at the time it was believed it might be confusing with two pro teams in the same city with the same nickname.

The baseball Royals had come into existence two years previously in 1969. Two pro teams in the same city did occur once upon a time in St. Louis. In 1960 the NFL Chicago Cardinals moved to St. Louis where the baseball Cardinals first had begun play in 1900. As you can see we had the baseball team and the football team with the same nickname, in addition it was the same city.  In 1972 the move by the Royals to Kansas City a decision was made to re-name the basketball team. The Royals would henceforth be known as the Kansas City Kings.

Bits n Pieces
We should have seen this coming, LeBron’s new team to play the Heat on Christmas Day? The Lakers will face the Bulls in Chicago on the same day. That will also be Pau Gasol’s first game against his former mates.  The Bulls power forward will be matched against last years Bulls power forward Carlos Boozer.

Arizona will join a number of college and NBA teams with a uniform change next season. The team will wear a combination of 5 different uniform changes. Check ’em out on the net for color combos.

Is it the name change or simply time or maybe something else? The Hornets are applying to serve as host either the 2017 or 2018 All-Star game. I seriously doubt Charlotte ownership might have even thought about hosting the game 5 or 6 years ago.  I haven't checked attendance numbers but perhaps Charlotte is upward bound on the court and with fans.

Recently I informed you of a statement rapper Nelly made claiming “nobody wants to play with Kobe.” I’ve got news for him, nobody is busting down the door to play with Kevin Durant or Carmelo Anthony either. Offensive players don’t draw other players to their teams for obvious reasons. LeBron can score the ball however he’s a facilitator, same as Magic Johnson when he played. They can score but prefer to involve teammates.

They share a common theme
Two Kansas City area guys occupy positions on the Cavs bench, former NBA players Tyronn Lue and Larry Drew serve on the coaching staff of David Blatt. Lue played at Raytown High Raytown (MO) a Kansas City suburb. Later he attended Nebraska before he began an 11-year NBA career at a player. After retirement Lue moving into the coaching ranks serving as an assistant for the Celtics and Clippers. Drew played at Wyandotte High School Kansas City Kansas. Drew would play for Mizzou before he too began an 11-year playing career. Since his retirement in addition to serving as an assistant at several NBA stops Drew has served as head coach for the Hawks and the Bucks.

Missouri Valley Conference calling
I believe UMKC belongs in the Missouri Valley Conference if for no other reason than geography. The idea of conferences based on geography has gone by the wayside, realignment for football purposes have been the driving force behind most of the conference re-alignment. Consider this fact the two nearest universities to Kansas City is Texas-Pan American at Edinburg and Chicago State. One way road mileage to Edinburg is 1,035 from Kansas City while Chicago is 526 miles from Kansas City. The 10 member Missouri Valley Conference schools are all located in states that border Missouri, the only exception is Indiana.

Is he the first?
We have no idea the length of Sim Bhullar’s NBA career; in fact we are unsure if the NBA is even in his future. This we do know the Kings signed the 7-5 360 pound giant to a
free-agent contract; he's in training camp currently.  The “first” in the headline is a reference to his heritage, as mentioned previously Sim’s parents immigrated to Canada from India. Thus he becomes the first player of Indian descent to sign an NBA contract, Bhullar needs work and it’s likely he winds up in the NBA D-League. Bhullar has an outside chance to back up DeMarcus Cousins at the center position for the upcoming season. It didn’t hurt the cause of Bhullar since the majority owner of the Kings was born in India; the owner stated “He believes India is the next frontier for the NBA.”

Reason #2 why I love college basketball
I love college basketball because of the arenas. You know their names, Cameron Indoor Stadium, the Dean Dome, Rupp Arena and Allen Fieldhouse. These are just a few arenas the opposition is defeated as much by the home team as the home crowd. We can easily state each of these arenas and others contain rabid fans who love their teams. It’s different in the NBA; a number of teams are good road teams just because they are professional. An NBA home crowd is often subdued and laid back. There are exceptions, Golden State, Oklahoma City and Portland crowds resemble college gatherings. For every boisterous Thunder game we could locate at least five college arenas much louder and electric with energy.

Former Tigers
This is an information update on Mizzou Tigers in the NBA or free agents in training camps. The Lakers traded for 2014 draft choice Jordan Clarkson, his backcourt mate Jabari Brown was not drafted but was invited to the Lakers training camp. Kim English 2012 Piston draft choice is in the Bulls training camp. Point guard Phil Pressey undrafted in 2013 is starting his second season with the Celtics while DeMarre Carroll a 2009 draft choice is now with the Hawks and entering his sixth season in the association.

He’ll be on a stamp
I read the story and my first thought; “has there been someone else?” Two commemorative forever stamps bearing Wilt Chamberlain’s image will be issued by the US Postal Service in December. Chamberlain who once scored 100 points in an NBA game, one season he averaged 50 points a game. Both feats have never been accomplished again; I know what you are sayin’ “It was a different era.” It was different however consider this fact.

Everyone talks about expansion basketball; there were a lesser number of teams when Chamberlain set these records. I searched the web to see if I could locate another NBA player accorded this honor. Chamberlain is the first NBA player to be honored with a stamp by the US Postal Service. Elsewhere in the world The Republic of the Congo has issued several stamps bearing images of NBA players.

Where do you recruit?
The subject of collegiate recruiting is always a hot button issue. Second to creating a winning program a coach must be able to recruit too. A number of schools have a national footprint their coach or team history aids them significantly in recruiting. The question might be asked about in-state recruiting. I’d mentioned previously I have a friend who always questions “why Mizzou doesn’t recruit in-state more?” I believe there are at least to principle reasons, population and talent. California, Texas, Florida and New York are examples that swamp Missouri in population. Of course a larger population base translates to larger numbers of potential talent.

Coaches “work” those states heavily in recruiting athletes. Our next door neighbor Kansas has tasted more success on the court than Mizzou but look closer. 1. The state actually has a smaller population than Missouri. 2. Check out their roster yearly at most there are probably no more than three kids from the State of Kansas. My friend complains about Mizzou losing players to other programs we can make the same statement for Kansas. For every Perry Ellis from Wichita (Kansas) there is a Willie Cauley-Stein from Olathe (Kentucky) or Semi Ojeleye from Ottawa (Duke). I believe fans and alum of UCLA, Kentucky or other successful programs worry about the success of the program rather than the home state of the talent.

I change my mind too
Hopefully this will not be construed as critical of LeBron; events in my life have often caused me to change my mind about a particular subject. Four years ago with the Heat he changed his jersey number to 6. He indicated “All NBA teams should no longer issue jersey 23.” It was never explained (or at least to my memory) if this was an attempt to honor Michael Jordan similar to what baseball had done with Jackie Robinsons 24.

The odd part for me which I pointed out at the time number 6 was worn by Celtic legend Bill Russell. Russell was an 11x NBA Champion, 5X NBA Most Valuable Player and attained numerous other monumental events during his playing days. Returning to the Cavs media day photos have him in jersey 23 once again. We are not sure at this point if he will wear that jersey once the season begins however it appears that is the case.

Auburn Hall of Fame athlete
Few probably realize Auburn University turned out three hall of fame athletes in the ‘80’s. The first hall of fame athlete is Charles Barkley who was enrolled from 1981-1984, after an outstanding NBA career he is now in the Naismith Hall of Fame. Next up was the athlete ESPN claims is the best ever Bo Jackson. Jackson was at Auburn from 1982-1985 and was 1985 Heisman Trophy winner. Later this multi-talented athlete would play outfield for the Kansas City Royals and football in the off-season for the Oakland Raiders. Jackson is in the College Football Hall of Fame. The last athlete was nicknamed The Big Hurt, Frank Thomas. His best years may have been the time period he played for the Chicago White Sox. At the conclusion of his baseball career he was elected to Cooperstown the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Has Vegas got it correct?
With NBA training camps opening Dan Patrick held a discussion this morning with his morning program crew, the discussion focused on odds where a select number of teams would finish. No big surprise Westgate Super book indicates the Cavs will win 58 games. You guys know how I feel about the Lakers however I found their odds on the Lakers to be-------I’ll just list it rather than provide commentary. Westgate Super book says the Lakers will win 31 games, well technically 31.5 in 2014-15.

It’s not just me
Several of you might remember I once wrote of my intent to limit writing Words during the summer. I concluded all eyes were on baseball, soccer and football. I have confirmation from another there is no such thing as an off season for basketball. The following is a segment of Dave McMenamin’s ESPNLosAngeles.com column of September 24. He wrote; “The NBA "off-season” is one of the biggest misnomers. The league gets talked about year round and there is always some kind of media out there with which to compete.” So there, I’m not the only one who believes there is no basketball off-season for news a guy who gets paid believes it too.

Big Three?
What do you think, I heard a broadcaster refer to the Cavs as the “new Big Three.” He pointed out they are younger than the LeBron/Wade/Bosh combo. As for the age factor I can agree LeBron was 25, Wade 28 and Bosh 26 when they came together. LeBron is and older 29, Kyrie Irving is 22 while Kevin Love is 25. Although the Heat trio didn’t win that first year all had previous play-off advantage. LeBron, Wade and Bosh all experienced post-season play prior to coming together as teammates on the Heat.

Wade won an NBA Championship in 2006 with a different crew. No requirement to detail LeBron’s playoff record how bout the others? Both Irving and Bosh have 0 playoff experience, both had the misfortune of playing on inferior Cavs and Wolves teams. The belief is the trio can successfully blend their talents to become a victorious maybe a championship team in the first season. The promise of next June is yet to be determined.

Headed to Wichita State
Point guard Tyrone Taylor attends Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham (VA). He is a local prospect attending Grandview High School in Grandview (MO) a Kansas City suburb. This 6-3 170 pound guard is rated a 3-star prospect in the Class of 2015 by Rivals.com. Last week Taylor made a verbal commitment to attend Wichita State next fall.

On the other hand
For me it’s difficult to lose a player without him ever sitting foot on court. He wasn’t involved in any criminal activity, it wasn’t an academic issue he just chose another path.  6-7 210 pound forward Cam Biedsheid is the athlete, he’d transferred to Mizzou from Notre Dame in December but transfer rules prohibited him from playing, he would be eligible for the 2014-15 season.

A number of stories have circulated why he’s leaving however I refuse to repeat what I’m unable to confirm. On the other hand Mizzou has a number of official and un-official visits scheduled in October. One of the visitors is Thomas Bryant a 6-10 230 pound attending Huntington Prep. Bryant is a 4-star prospect in the Class of 2015; Mizzou faces stiff competition for the services of the Rivals number 35 prospect in the nation. .

Roll of the dice
The NBA draft has often been a gamble, a roll of the dice. You draft what you hope (believe) will be an addition to your team however injuries and skill level often impact that choice. The NBA page on NBA.com ran a story on the 2007 focusing on Greg Oden and Kevin Durant. Oden emerged with all the credentials while Durant while talented was not in the same class with Oden. I’m sure a number of fans might believe the statement is an exaggeration. The Blazers with the number one pick chose Oden while Seattle (OKC) made Durant the number two pick. In addition to the limited time and career thus far Oden is facing a domestic abuse charge. Oden’s trial is still pending as this is written so we have no idea of his future status. Regardless of the court outcome his NBA career is likely over.

The post-Ray Rice sports world is quite different, if Oden isn’t incarcerated is there an NBA GM willing to take a chance on him at this stage? My how fortunes have changed, I remember when he left Indiana after his freshman year followed by teammate Mike Conley. I thought “Conley’s not ready for the NBA” my assessment was certainly in error there. Conley while no superstar athlete has certainly been a valuable contributor to the Grizzlies, who would have believed his NBA, would exceed that of Oden. Back to the draft a minute, the Blazers still receive a great deal of grief for their choice. I ask why, a scout compared Oden to a “youthful Bill Russell.” Durant was a skinny 6-10 small forward, there was no question on his shooting skill but given the choice Oden is the pick.

Texas turbulence
The headline might be a little misleading allow a further explanation. It seems Mark Cuban Mavs owner has been sniping at the Rockets for months, finally Rockets GM Daryl Morey responded. While these two Texas teams are feuding in the media the Spurs are quietly sitting by. There is no need for them to become embroiled in any type of turmoil they are defending NBA Champions.

There is still a problem
We’ll visit the domestic violence issue once again based on a conversation I held with a female friend. She pointed out a fact I previously failed to consider might take place. She said; “Its possible wives or girl friends might be reluctant to report physical abuse. They (wives & girl friends) may look at the Ray Rice incident and how his NFL salary is now history. The belief might be if I report him we both lose.”

The NFL is still scrambling to recover its tarnished public image. Roger Goodell spent three hours visiting the headquarters of the domestic hotline center over the weekend. I have a better suggestion for him, why not at some future point (after training) he answer the hotline for a couple of hours. I believe he might have a better understanding over just a “tour” of the building.

Canadian import
His name is Shakur Daniel he’s a 6-4 160 pound combo guard. He hails from the growing basketball hotbed Toronto Canada has become. We might pose the question is Toronto producing more hockey or basketball players. Silly question on my part of course its hockey. Despite this fact Canadian and Toronto basketball continues to produce larger and larger amounts of talented basketball players. Can Daniel play; at this point we only depend on reports indicating he’s been trained at an early age to play the game. Interesting he’s moving to the USA, this 15-year old Class of 2018 prospect will enroll at Elite 1 Academy for Academics & Athletics in September 2015. This newly opened school is located in Phoenix Arizona.

The NBA versus college
An acquaintance asked me a question he said; “You write about the NBA more than college basketball do you like college ball better?” I paused a moment before responding to his question. Other than coaching changes and a number of high school players committing little activity on the collegiate level occurs during the summer. In addition to the NBA Championship being decided in June there is the draft the following week.

NBA free-agency begins and that becomes noteworthy news. This activity is followed by Summer League for about 3 weeks and then a few trades occur. This past summer the FIBA Championship was held Team USA was comprised of NBA athletes. The balance of many of the nations competing also contained a number of NBA talent.  The NBA at least from June to October dominates basketball news there is limited collegiate news. If I were to provide you a percentage on which level I follow I must say 70% NBA and 30% college.

The world wide web
I hope I’m not guilty, guilty of name calling without providing any proof. A number of persons at all levels of the game I’ve made critical remarks in the past. I‘ll provide you an example of name calling lacking substance. A story was reported indicating the Lakers and Bucks seem to be exploring hiring Gary Payton as an associate head coach. A reader responded to the story by labeling Payton a “gang-banger”. As someone stated Payton might have been a talker he might have been a loud mouth.

Being a loud mouth certainly doesn’t line up with being a gang banger.  The term gang banger applies to someone either part of a gang or with a record of criminal activity. I wondered if the writer truly understood the definition of the term or if he is just an internet troll. You know who they are guys who surf the net for stories and provide negative emails on a story for purposes of securing a reaction. So I guess I fell into his trap thus this column. To my knowledge Payton’s never been involved in any illegal goings-on of any type, to make that type of statement might be close to libel. That’s the danger of the internet you can say almost anything without providing proof.
