There is a distinction between lack of talent and lack of effort!
-------Larry Laker

Noteworthy
The duties of assists in basketball generally lie with the point guard of a team. That’s not to say other players have no responsibility to pass the basketball. 7-1 Wilt Chamberlain owns practically every scoring record in the NBA yet managed to lead the league in assists during the 1967-68 season. Paul Pressey would arrive in the NBA in 1982 spending most of NBA career with the Bucks. He became quite skillful passing the basketball despite the fact he was the teams small forward. The media coined the phrase point-forward to describe his talent. Later the Bulls Scottie Pippen would arrive in the league and also become adept at ball distribution.

How good was Pippen in distributing the basketball? He would go on to establish the assist record for small forwards that is until this week. Two milestones in succession for LeBron James in recent weeks. Last week he passed Allen Iverson in scoring, this week he surpassed Pippen and has now established a new assist record for small forwards. Mario Chalmers was the point guard for the Heat we recognize the true “point” played the small forward position. He’s just turned 30 years of age and baring injury LeBron should have five or six more productive years. This should provide him ample time to establish other significant records.

Career ending
We might pose the question is the career of Derrick Rose over? That might be the case after the latest Rose injury to the same knee. A torn meniscus requiring surgery and will sideline him for the balance of the season. A significant number of Bulls and NBA fans were rooting for this talented point guard to return to full effect after missing most of the past two years. The likelihood of the Bulls competing for an NBA championship has shrunk considerably due to this injury. This is no obituary on Rose’s career hopefully he’s able to return; with a bit of luck he can adjust his game. Please don’t expect the MVP Rose to return he will never be seen again. The slashing player we once witnessed must now adapt his game and become a jump shooter.

The jump hook
Players have been shooting the hook shot since like forever; the jump hook is “new” by comparison. Billy “The Hill” McGill is given credit for originating the shot, the 6-9 McGill certainly could score. Wilt Chamberlain should also be credited with aiding the development of the jump hook; it was Chamberlain guarding McGill in a pick-up game. The story goes the “undersized” McGill didn’t want his shot blocked by the 7-1 Chamberlain who was swatting everything aimed at the basket. The hook shot had long been a staple for many years by several NBA players. No one had ever shot it in the manner of McGill, that first jump hook went in the basket much to Chamberlains’ surprise.

Who is McGill you might ask he played at Utah and in 1961-62 led the nation in scoring with a 38.8 ppg average in 26 games. He accomplished this in a day there was no three-point line. McGill was selected the first pick in the 1962 NBA draft by the Chicago Zephyrs who later would become the Baltimore Bullets. He was unable to duplicate the same types of numbers in the NBA he compiled while in college. Playing for a number of teams his career lasted until 1970 and his last season was spent as a member of the ABA Dallas Chaparrals. Unfortunately after his basketball career ended he became heavily in debt and even homeless for a time. McGill died last year at age 74 of natural causes.

In Riley we trust
What’s your view, who do you trust most Matt Moore of CBS Sports or Pat Riley president of the Heat? A writer who covers the sport versus one who lives the sport.  Moore suggested the Heat should consider trading Hassan Whiteside while his trade value is high. Over the last 10 games as a starter Whiteside is averaging nearly 15 ppg, 14 rebounds and 2.2 blocked shots a game. Moore believes the 7 foot 265 pound Whiteside will “come down to earth” and when it occurs he will have little if any trade value. After all we are discussing a second round pick and the 33rd player chosen in the 2010 draft. Moore believes the Heat should consider trading Whiteside while he’s a hot commodity.

Whiteside could be the second coming of Michael Olowokandi. He was drafted number one in the 1998 draft and was out of the NBA by 2007. Kareem Abdul Jabbar was a Clipper coach and was assigned to tutor Olowokandi. It was reported Olowokandi stated he’d received all the lessons from Abdul Jabbar he believed he needed. Would anyone had figured in 1984 Hakeem Abdul Olajuwon was destine for the Naismith Hall of Fame? Granted Olajuwon was a number one pick however his offensive game was somewhat limited at the beginning of his NBA career. Do the Heat keep Whiteside hoping he’s not the second coming of Olowokandi or do they figure he might become the next Olajuwon?

Is he the second coming of white chocolate?
Anybody out there remember Jason Williams, his best NBA years were probably spent with the Kings. Williams a.k.a White Chocolate was a magician with the basketball, behind the back passes you name it he did it. The problem for teammates unless you were paying attention you might get hit in the back of the head. Williams last appeared in an NBA jersey as a member of the Grizzlies in 2011.

Jordan McCabe at 5-10 is slightly smaller than the 6-1 Williams in addition Williams out weighs him (180 versus 150). Well McCabe is just a freshman in high school plenty of time to continue growing his game as well as his height. The youngster has begun play for Kaukauna High School Kaukauna (WI); his home town is about 120 miles north of Milwaukee. Because he’s entering his freshman year he’s proved nothing however his moves on the court are worth checking out, Google his name at your earliest opportunity.

Court storming
Once again we witnessed a court storming, Monday night Kansas State upset number 8 Kansas. The student section of Kansas State rushed the court celebrating the 70-63 win. Both coaches were pinned against a table not able to move but that wasn’t the only incident. It was evident a Kansas State student went out of his way to as Bill Self stated “chicken-wing” one of his players. After the Kansas player turned toward him the student went sprinting away probably realizing his life was in danger. I am far too old to transport myself back to my student days however I can understand the enthusiasm with a victory over the in-state rival.

The victory may have been even more gratifying considering the lofty status of the Kansas Jayhawks. Question, consider the circumstances if the Kansas player had decided to hit the student rather than walk away. I’ve played enough sports to know you don’t get in someone’s face after defeating them. I’m unsure if this incident occurred last season or two years ago I cannot even remember where it occurred. A wheelchair bound student was pushed by a fellow student into a court storming. In the turmoil the chair was turned over and the student was almost trampled. One of the basketball players seeing the incident pulled the student to safety.

I’m disappointed
As I sat down to draft the next installment of Words I glanced at the Steve Nash Laker jersey displayed on my wall. While a member of the Suns and Mavs Nash was one of those guys I loved to hate, the dipsey-do crazy shots he took (and made) plus the bullet passes he would zip to a streaking teammate. The Suns had made it clear they would prefer the youthful Gordon Dragic to run the team over the older Nash. Funny how things turn out Dragic is gone now as well however that’s another story.

The Lakers were an older team when Nash arrived but so was he. I certainly wasn’t expecting the 2X MVP do to appear but certainly expected more than what I’ve seen to date. Funny thing I only hear Laker haters claiming Kobe should retire, I’ve never heard Nash’s name in the same breath. As for my Nash jersey it will remain in place because he’s going in the Hall of Fame. He will not go into the hall as a Laker but no matter. Who could have guessed at the time Nash arrived from Santa Clara University he would become a 2X NBA MVP and garner the number of accolades over a 20 year career.

Bits n Pieces
I’m sure the NBA looks forward to the Knicks and Lakers fielding improved teams next season. But wait there is a caveat to the aforementioned declaration. If for some reason Duke’s Jahlil Okafor should be drafted by either team I can hear the yelling and screaming already. “Conspiracy, the draft is fixed” are just a few of the adjectives utilized nationwide.

I’m unsure about you but the news caught me off guard. The Cavs LeBron James eclipsed Allen Iverson in career scoring in a game against the Knicks. LeBron finished with 24,383 points. LeBron is number 22 and will pass Ray Allen this season and Patrick Ewing next year. Baring a major injury LeBron should pass several NBA stalwarts a number in the Hall of Fame.

By now you are award Chris Bosh of the Heat is sidelined; a blood clot was diagnosed in one of his lungs. It’s reported he should be able to return next season, here’s hoping that is indeed the case, get well Chris.

Unless his team self destructs Frank Haith’s Tulsa Hurricane team will make the NCAA this season. I wonder why one particular radio host’s discussion surrounding Haith are always negative. As this is written Tulsa is 19-7 and 12-2 in the American Conference. I have no idea of strength of schedule however the record is noteworthy.

Where do you stand?
Awhile back I wrote Mizzou received a verbal commit from Terrance Phillips a 5-10 point guard. Some may have wondered why it was even mentioned since I appeared to be enamored by Big Men. Well I haven’t changed, 6-11 (with skills) is certainly better the game belongs to the Aircraft Carriers. That statement doesn’t mean there’s no place for athletes six feet and under. I wrote of Nate “Tiny” Archibald who managed an NBA Championship career and the Naismith Hall of Fame.

Stats say he was 6-1 don’t believe it, I once had the opportunity to meet him. We could add 5-3 Muggsey Bogues to the list of talent under 6 feet. Bogues spent most of his career with the Charlotte Hornets or maybe 5-5 Earl Boykins. There is 5-9 Nate Robinson whose play has provided a spark off the bench for several NBA teams. 5-10 Phil Pressey played at Mizzou and is now a member of the Celtics. Don’t believe I’m stating there’s an NBA career in Phillips future. I’m simply stating don’t allow size to confuse with talent.

There is a distinction between lack of talent and lack of effort!
-------Larry Laker

Back in the old days
Freshmen were ineligible to play varsity sports, the idea was for them to become accustom to college life.  Then someone had a bright idea it was costing universities far too much money to fund freshmen and varsity teams.  The decision was made freshmen would be eligible to play immediately.  The Big 10 is considering this move once again using the same observation. My question why only football and basketball athletes. Just making the move for the “big ticket” sports seem to be self-serving it would guarantee basketball players remain in school through their sophomore year. Sorry Big 10 not on this this no longer is this move valid it appears to be self-serving. Perhaps the conference could provide us a further explanation for this proposed change.

More was expected in Gotham City
Confidence reigned supreme in Gotham City; a series of off-season events guaranteed the Knicks would “immediately” become a better team. Well things are not always as they are first perceived to be. Hiring Phil Jackson who would later hire Derek Fisher as coach and resigning Carmelo Anthony, these were the key off-season events. There were other front office moves however the hires and re-singing Anthony were key. Events derailed the Knicks on the road to an NBA championship. Number one Phil Jackson hired Derek Fisher instead of Phil Jackson. This is no knock on PJ however he’s never ever built a team. A championship coach making trades and performing front office stuff. The Knicks have certainly not played up to the level their fans believed. Again this is no knock on Fisher; I believe he can coach however he inherited a bad, really bad team.

Given appropriate time and roster adjustments the team can improve. The chief complaint by most fans is the amount of money paid Jackson he should have been able to change the mentality of this team. It didn’t help when PJ made it known the season has not turned out as he hoped. I’ve been a critic of owner James Dolan in the past I am not going to blame this “train-wreck” on him. He hired basketball people (PJ & Fisher) to run his team; he’s not received to date what he hoped for. The Knicks certainly have been worse than fans expected however they were not world beaters last season, they finished 37-45. Carmelo Anthony sitting out the remainder of the season was the last piece of this puzzle. Maybe this is not the right coach, maybe it’s not the right president and general manager. Adequate time to build (or re-build in this instance) must be given.

Do you have an idea what is going on?
We have been hearing for years reports of the 76ers tanking, i.e. losing on purpose to benefit them in the draft. I didn’t want to believe a team an NBA team would lose games on purpose, now I’m not so sure. One of the multitude of trade deadline moves was the 76ers trading Michael Carter-Williams. How can the 76ers trade the 2014 Rookie of the Year less than a year after his outstanding rookie year?

I admit I haven’t seen a great deal of Carter-Williams because his team is not a national television drawing card. The focus is not just one player but Sam Henke and his front office team. There appears to be no direction for this team other than stockpiling draft choices. If I were Joel Embiid I’d keep a suitcase handy. Reports are circulating number one pick Joel Embiids’ weight has ballooned while sitting out the 2014-2015 season. He might also be in danger of a trade we might speculate.

It’s over officially
It’s been over for awhile, the Brooklyn Nets that is. As this is written they stand 21-31 not at the bottom however nowhere near what was expected two years ago when the trio of Jason Terry, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett arrived in Brooklyn. We are two years down the road from the trade and now all are gone. Terry was the first to go; the guard was traded to the Kings (although he never suited up) in February 2014. The summer of 2014 Paul Pierce signed a two-year free-agent contract with the Wizards and left.

The last day of the trade deadline 2015 Kevin Garnett was traded to the Wolves. The Wolves were the team that originally drafted the 6-11 power forward in 1995. This not intended to be a negative commentary on moves made by the Nets. Management believed the acquisition of the trio would allow them to effectively compete for the Eastern Conference crown. If there is any second guessing it could be the trio had too much mileage to sustain a long and continuous run

There is a distinction between lack of talent and lack of effort!
-------Larry Laker

It’s official
Thon Maker announced via Twitter he’s on course to graduate high school in 2015. With this move Rivals places him immediately into the number five position in the Class of 2015.  It’s a possibility he may move even higher by the end of the school year.  This is just the latest move by the 7-foot center he‘s been a mover for a number of years. I mentioned previously Maker has been a world traveler, originally from Sudan he migrated to Australia. From the Southwest Pacific nation he arrived in the U.S. first attending high schools in Louisiana and then Virginia.

Maker moved from Virginia to Canada and Orangeville District Secondary School. I checked the maps Orangeville Ontario is located about 80 km northwest of Toronto. Can Maker play might be your next question with all the hype surrounding this youngster. Maker’s game bears a strong resemblance to that of Kevin Durant. I believe I must insert a disclaimer here, I didn’t say he was the next Kevin Durant I said his actions on the court remind several of us as a taller Durant.

Bits n Pieces
Marcellus Wiley of ESPN’s Sportsnation spent 10 years in the NFL and not the NBA. It’s clear to us he’s got no clue regarding the NBA. The hosts were viewing highlights of a Nuggets game and a windmill dunk produced by Kenneth Faried. This was the insightful Wiley response to the dunk. “My Clippers need to get him (Faried) so they can win the championship.” Co-host Max Kellerman reminded Wiley the Clippers already have Blake Griffin playing power forward. No response from Wiley probably realizing his statement sounded pretty dumb.

Speaking of the Clippers I believe DeAndre Jordan is a throwback; he is a reflection of the power game of Chamberlain, O’Neal and several others. At the age of 26 he’s in the middle of his 7th season in the NBA. I’m not going to go into the Doc Rivers rant regarding Jordan’s alleged All Star snub lets just say scoring 20 points and snagging 20 rebounds is certainly noteworthy. His scoring is only average (10.7 ppg) in spite of this he can rebound the ball and block shots. It’s been my belief a coach cannot “teach” someone how to rebound and block shots its instinctive thing. The 6-11 265 pound center is already an All Star but soon it will be official.

According to NBADraftexpress.com a possible late first round pick will be George Lucas. Not that George Lucas this one is a 6-5 200 pound point guard. He hails from Diademan, Brazil and plays for Bruno Caboclo's old Pinheiros squad in the Brazilian league. Can he play at the NBA level might be the next question; evidently NBADraftexpress believes that to be the case. By the way this athletes’ full name is George Lucas Alves De Paula.

They are really good however
You won’t hear this rant from me, “Kentucky basketball is good enough to compete against NBA teams.” This is the belief in some media circles the Wildcats could defeat the Wolves, Knicks or 76ers. I’m unsure if they really believe this observation or simply creating a story line. There are all sorts of scenarios that might permit the Wildcats to “hang” with an NBA team but beat them, come on. We can make this statement without any reservation; Kentucky at 26-0 is the best team in the nation not in the NBA.

I remember do you?
Remember the days when Charles Barkley simply focused on basketball? He analyzed action on the court, he may have been controversial but it was mostly basketball. In more recent years Barkley has provided insight on areas which are often more his opinion than actual fact. Don’t misunderstand me Barkley is certainly entitled to his view but only to a point. He feels free to provide us his view of social issues and other areas he may or may not be qualified to discuss. A couple of examples, he believed his opinion was required regarding NFL running back Adrian Peterson. Barkley questioned why Peterson was being accused of child abuse because he chose to spank his son. Barkley stated “If you were black and grew up in the south the manner of punishment we witnessed was common.” Well that type of punishment may have existed in some black households but not all.

Recently he found himself in the middle of a feud with Rockets GM Daryl Morey, this time the issue was analytics. I admit I do not fully understand it and further study by yours truly is required. Morey said in a tweet; “Best part of being at a TNT game live is it is easy to avoid Charles spewing misinformed biased vitriol disguised as entertainment.” Barkley had stated earlier the Rockets have one of the worst defenses in the NBA. The retort; “One (Morey) of those idiots who believes in analytics.” I will not attempt to defend analytics but simply state management must have some type of barometer to measure rate of return on an investment. The practice of analytics should not be used exclusively for decision making regarding employment. Despite leading the Grizzlies into the playoffs it was reported Lionel Hollins was fired based mainly on analytics.

There is a distinction between lack of talent and lack of effort!
-------Larry Laker

Just think
I held off writing this piece but now consider it a real possibility. A number of fans especially several fans of the Lakers were critical for the teams' failure to sign free agents.  Carmelo Anthony was one of the number of free agents under consideration. We certainly have no method of projecting future events however this scenario that could have developed, Kobe goes down first and later the Carmelo injury forces him to “shut it down after the All Star game."

Rivalry Week---it depends
The term was not invented by ESPN however it’s become a broadcast tool utilized by the World Wide Leader. North Carolina versus Duke, St. John’s-Georgetown is a slam dunk, these are easy to understand. We could include Michigan State and Michigan; in addition we could add Texas playing Oklahoma. How bout this one---Kansas at West Virginia?

Other than three years West Virginia has been a member of the Big 12 can they really be considered rivals? The schools mentioned previously have a long established rivalry Kansas-West Virginia I don’t get. Wouldn’t it make more sense for Kansas to play Kansas State or heaven forbid Mizzou. St. John’s now competes in the ACC while Georgetown remains in the revised Big East Conference. These long-time rivals are continuing to play one another.

Clueless
Why are Mike & Mike debating which television program was most viewed Sunday night? These guys are paid to discuss sports and events surrounding games. It’s a stretch but I guess we could say basketball at this level is also entertaining programming. I didn’t realize until I heard their discussion the All Star game was matched against The Walking Dead and the Saturday Night Live Special. Of course these two didn’t stop to consider the NBA All Star game had a WORLD audience which heavily favored the game over Walking Dead and SNL. We know this is not 1980 however the SNL special was broadcast on NBC and over the air network. I believe the cable/satellite market while huge continues to remain smaller than an on-air network.

Change the name
This is my continuing campaign to change the names of two NBA teams. It’s not gonna do any good but it satisfies me. First up the Golden State Warriors, we realize the sun might shine more calendar days in the state over several others. The Philadelphia Warriors moved west in 1962 becoming the San Francisco Warriors. After bouncing around in a number of locations throughout the city the team moved in 1971 across the bay to the Oakland playing in the Oakland Coliseum Arena (now Oracle). Because the team was no longer in San Francisco the decision was made to change the name to Golden State. The baseball A’s and football Raiders both had Oakland in front of their name why the Warriors couldn’t follow is unknown. There is a new arena on the horizon being built in San Francisco.

The Warriors have made it known they hope to play in the arena in 2017. Seems to me a name change is in the future too? Do you hear thunder during a rainstorm where you live? We certainly have thunderstorms in Kansas City; they probably have them in Chicago and Oklahoma City. See where I’m going with this theme? When the Sonics moved from Seattle to Oklahoma a condition of the sale the Sonic name would remain in the Emerald City. All right lets rename the franchise; let’s give it a unique name-------how about Thunder? At the beginning of this account I attempted to point out a team named after a weather event might be unique but it’s a little strange. We have duplication with the number of Bears, Lions, and Tigers in use by college and professional teams what’s the problem with one more?

I missed this one
Basketball fans I apologize I missed the Herb Magee news. It’s noteworthy in that we have one more coach whose resume includes 1,000 wins. The 73-year old Magee has served as head coach at Philadelphia University his alma mater for 48-years. Magee was elected to the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2011.

The country’s best unknown team
Unless you are alum or live in the State of Iowa I doubt you know what city is home to Northern Iowa. I’ll help you cause I didn’t know either, its Cedar Falls located about 120 miles northeast of Des Moines. As this is written Northern Iowa is 24-2, 13-1 in Mo Valley). They are number 11 in the AP poll and at a similar level on other polls. Pay attention to this school they have a winning tradition.

There is a distinction between lack of talent and lack of effort!
-------Larry Laker

All Star game weekend
I will be the first, allow the panic to begin. To quote Dr. Peter (Bill Murray) Venkman; “Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria! “ The World team led by Andrew Wiggins beat the USA squad 121-112.

In advance of an official count I believe more of the world’s media will report on the game than for the Super Bowl/World Series combined. Soccer (football) remains number one in the eyes of the world but basketball especially the NBA is in second place.

Mo’ne Davis took the world and Little League baseball by storm last summer. The 13-year old girl with the 70 mph fastball dispatched many a male batter during the World Series. After her team was eliminated Davis indicated in an interview basketball was her favorite sport. She was invited to participate in the Celebrity NBA All Star game and proved just as skillful with a basketball.

Steph Curry put on one of the best exhibitions of 3-point shooting in memory. Winning the contest with a 27 score out of a possible 34. The other half of the “Splash Brothers” Klay Thompson failed to duplicate his initial first round effort. Zach LaVine was declared the Slam Dunk champ, LaVine was original and spectacular. These were certainly none of “Your Father’s” dunks.

Give him his due
Once you leave the scene it gives “them” an opportunity to bad-mouth you. Because Mizzou is experiencing the worst season in recent memory we are hearing negative talk regarding Frank Haith. As for Mizzou’s poor record thus far consider how much of the offense is missing from last season. The team is minus the 19.9 ppg of Jabari Brown, 17.5 ppg of Jordan Clarkson and 14.0 ppg of Earnest Ross. As for Haith consider these facts; in the three years he was at the helm the team never suffered a losing season. The improprieties Haith was accused occurred at Miami not Mizzou. In addition he was punished by the NCAA and that whole fiascos should be in the rear view mirror.

Funny thing I didn’t hear any similar conversation when Bruce Pearl and Kelvin Sampson were hired at Auburn and Houston. In the 11 years Haith has served as a head coach (Miami, Mizzou & Tulsa) he‘s only experienced one (1) losing season. As this is written Haith’s Tulsa team is 10-1 in the American Conference 17-6 overall. I didn’t follow Tulsa basketball previously so I had to check the record of last year’s team. The Golden Hurricanes finished 13-3 21-13 overall. The only negative on his resume his teams have not performed well in the post-season.

Speaking of coaches
A number of you might believe I did a number Friday on George Karl, believe you me that was not my intent. He probably is good person I just happen to believe his name outweighs his coaching skill. There is no requirement for a response of course he can coach. The NBA level requires conducting yourself different than a college coach. You have over half a team’s roster earning more money than you. A coach must have the ability to walk the line between teacher and disciplinarian. In nearly 25 years of coaching his teams have played for one (1) NBA championship that occurred in 1996. Unfortunately his Sonic team was dealt a loss by the Jordan Bulls. Over his career the teams he‘s coached (Cavs, Warriors, Sonics, Bucks & Nuggets) all have fallen short of the mark. Winning an NBA championship is not the only barometer utilized for accessing a coach’s performance.

I’ll take him
Rajon Rondo has already gone on record indicating he’s going to remain with the Mavs. He further indicated winning was key to his decision. Rondo is not a good shooter he might have attitude issues but I’ll take him. I’m gonna replace the Lakers Mitch Kupchak and seek Rondo’s services. Its likely Steve Nash fails to return plus as I indicated earlier he’s 40 years old. Jeremy Lin is an NBA talent but at this point I’d have to consider him a reserve point guard. Ronnie Price is an adequate point guard but a career backup who’s been pressed into service as a starter. That leaves rookie Jordan Clarkson, he’s got size (6-5) speed and shooting skill. It’s my belief Clarkson might be more a combo than a pure point. So as you can see the Lakers are still lacking that veteran presence at the point. Rondo is only 28 years of age he’s just reaching his prime, baring an injury he could blend his skill to this roster.

Did you read this?
If you were to compare the two players the average fan would state Tim Duncan’s career has exceeded that of Scot Pollard. Duncan has been 3X NBA Finals MVP, 5X NBA Champion and 2X league MVP. Duncan will go into the Naismith Hall of Fame and College Hall of Fame as soon as he’s eligible, what about Pollard? The 6-11 265 pound Pollard had an 11-year NBA career playing for 5 different teams. Rarely during his career did he find his name penciled in as a starter.

Why the comparison between the two, it revolves around the Spurs Greg Popovich. The coach recently revealed around draft time he “liked Pollard better than Duncan due to the ruggedness and defense he played at Kansas.” It seems the coach preferred Pollard over Duncan in the 1997 NBA Draft and had to be talked into Duncan. NBA history as it relates to the Spurs may have been quite different if Pollard had been drafted.

There is a distinction between lack of talent and lack of effort!

The NFL and film
Ed Sabol died recently at age 98; Sabol was creater and founder of NFL Films. His son Steve who preceded him in death were key to the growth of the league in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s. The music behind the productions was as slick as the game film they provided. Mike Wilbon of Pardon the Interruption said; “If the Sabol’s had covered the NBA we’d have film of Wilt’s (Chamberlain) 100 point game.” In the early ‘60’s NBA games were often “farmed’ out.  The Philadelphia (Golden State) Warriors played the game in Hershey (PA) located about 100 miles from Philadelphia.  To give you an idea of how popular the NBA was in that day this game was played before an audience of 4,124 souls.

According to Wikipedia; “The game was not televised, and no video footage of the game has been located; there are only audio recordings of the game's fourth quarter.” Wilt’s Warrior team beat the Knicks 169-147. It also states no members of the New York press were in attendance. Today an event of this type would not occur; camera phones and other video devices guarantee it would be highly unlikely. In those days the NBA did not compile block shot figures so we have no idea of Wilt’s total. As for the other portion of the box score Wilt pulled down 25 rebounds and the notorious poor free-throw shooter hit 28 out of 32 from the line. Wilt was doing more than jacking up shots he managed a .571 percentage from the floor.

Rebel with a "cause"
Movie buffs will remember the 1955 classic Rebel without a Cause starring the late James Dean. Jerry Tarkanian was a “rebel with a cause.” The Hall of Fame coach died on Wednesday at the age of 84. Tark the Shark as he was nicknamed retired from coaching in 2002. His most successful coaching years were spent at UNLV with his Running Rebel team winning the 1990 NCAA championship. Tark first began his career coaching high school basketball in 1959, from there he moved to Riverside Community College. From there Tark went to Long Beach State and finally UNLV. He coached the NBA Spurs but was fired with less than a year on the job. His last coaching job was at Fresno State 1995-2002.

Of the 906 college games he coached Tark won 706 of them a sparkling .779 winning percentage. Today there is a chorus of folks registering complaints about the NCAA. 30 some years ago Tark’s was the only voice we heard, he did this at a point he was the lone voice brave enough to confront the NCAA. *“Tarkanian sued the NCAA, claiming it had harassed him for over two decades. The harassment, Tarkanian claimed, started when he wrote a newspaper column alleging that the NCAA was more willing to punish less-prominent schools than big-name schools. Although the NCAA did not admit harassing Tarkanian, it settled out of court in 1998, paying him $2.5 million.”

Following in his father’s footsteps
This freshman stands 6-10 but probably weighs no more than 180 pounds. Don’t allow his thin frame to fool you his skills are superior to his dad in several areas. Will he ever gain any additional weight? Well his 7-7 dad played 10 years in the NBA and may have never tipped the scales over 220 pounds. This freshmen youngster is Bol Bol the son of the late Manute Bol.

Bol Bol transferred from Olathe Northwest to Bishop Miege in Roeland Park (KS) a city in suburban Kansas City. His father was a specialist who would often station himself on the perimeter shooting from distance; in fact Manute Bol became fairly efficient from the 3-point line. On the other hand his son has a number of moves around the basket and yes he too can shoot from the 3-point line. This certainly is no prediction of an NBA future however several colleges have already made inquires on Bol.

“How old am I?”
Old enough to remember a prospect questioned about his college choice would say; “I have to go to a school that’s on television.” That statement is quite antiquated in this day and age. It’s almost impossible to locate a Division I team that’s not on television. If the game is telecast to a local or regional audience it’s often picked up by ESPN, Fox CBS Sports Network, YES or a number of unnamed networks for a national viewing audience.

In my part of the country a Kansas-UNLV game might be the game of choice, how about the others? At the same time on cable I’m viewing South Dakota State at North Dakota State or I could choose UCLA-Utah on the Pac-12 Network. On the other hand Providence and Marquette are also available on Fox Sports or the replay of yesterdays Baylor-Oklahoma game. Games are also available on the New England Sports & YES Networks.

The coach
Kings management has made it know for awhile they intended to hire George Karl as their head coach. This is one NBA fan that is less than impressed by the hire.  Stephen A. Smith on First Take was extolling the virtues of Karl and “how good a coach Karl was.” They guy certainly has coached for an extensive period of time but does he even make the Top 10 list of anyone?  This is Karl’s 6th stop in his NBA coaching career and during that time he's won 1887 games.  With 24 years on his resume Karl continues to be hired because he’s had few losing seasons in his career.

There is a distinction between lack of talent and lack of effort!
-------Larry Laker

The “Dean” is no longer with us
Early Sunday we received word Dean Smith had died, although he’s been retired since 1997 anytime North Carolina basketball is mentioned his name invariability becomes part of the conversation. Few realize he’s one the keys to North Carolina’s place on the basketball map. Some might say that’s an exaggerated on my part after all the 1957 team coached by Frank McGuire won the NCAA championship over a Kansas team led by Wilt Chamberlain. Dean a Kansas native honed his skill playing for Phog Allen and was a member of the 1952 NCAA champion Kansas team. He was born in Emporia Kansas in 1931 and grew up in Topeka. Smith coached at North Carolina for 36-years and had only one losing season his first during his tenure.

Smith recruited guard Charley Scott the first African-American to play in the ACC. The coach was personally responsible for integrating the conference. Smith holds the distinction of being a member of two halls of fames, the Naismith Hall of Fame and the College Basketball Hall. In addition to turning out a number of NBA players and his Carolina team twice won the NCAA championship. This is but a brief account and fails to adequately cover many of the innovations pioneered by this native of Kansas. It’s short on purpose because Smith never sought glory or wanted the spotlight to shine on him. Michael Jordan, James Worthy, Sam Perkins and Phil Ford is just a few of the outstanding players Smith coached.

Black history moment
Despite continuing racial problems American is nothing like it was in 1944; segregation and Jim Crow laws were in place especially in southern portions of the nation. The policies that forbid the races mixing existed in sports too. Rarely did white and black teams play one another except in one noteworthy instance. In March 1944 white Duke University played black North Carolina Central University in a basketball game.

The game was a well-kept secret; curtains covered the windows to prohibit outsiders from knowing the game was even being played. The athletes and all participants were sworn to secrecy considering they were breaking the law by even playing the game. North Carolina Central playing an up tempo offense won the match 88-44. The participants maintain their silence regarding this little know history fact until 1996.

Bits n Pieces
I’d written an account last season on the Spurs Greg Popovich. I’m sure a discussion of great NBA coaches it’s likely his name will probably be omitted. Popovich reached a significant milestone on Monday, 1,000 NBA victories. He becomes just the ninth coach in NBA history to accomplish the number. We could state “It’s not where you start it’s where you finish;” he began his coaching career as an Air Force assistant coach and later head coach at D-III Pomona-Pitzer. This is not a slam at either institution however you wouldn’t have expected such a successful career from these schools.

A couple of folks asked me if I thought Kobe Bryant should retire after this latest injury. I repeated what I wrote a few weeks back he should retire but he won’t. I said; “He’s got 25,000,000 reasons why he won’t.” Of course the reference was to his reported salary. The Lakers are not going to win a championship in the time left for him. The Lakers experienced two sub-par years and I don’t believe he wants to retire with losing records on his resume. Just my belief I could be off-base.

They don’t stand alone
This first weekend in February the Kentucky Wildcats remain undefeated. They managed to survive a scare from upset minded Florida winning a close game 68-61. Last night the same as they barely won over LSU 71-69.  Kentucky’s record is 24-0 however they are not the only undefeated team in the nation. As far as I can determine there is one other men's team Marietta College, Marietta who you might ask? Well it’s a NCAA Division III school located in Marietta Ohio. The Marietta Pioneers current record in 21-0 and the city is located approximately 124 miles south and east of Columbus.

“Show me the money”
Do you remember the scene, Jerry McGuire (Tom Cruise) is on the telephone with Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.)? The agent is trying to convince the football player to sign with him. The player says to the agent “Show me the money” and the agent response was bland. Tidwell said; “say it like you mean it, (screaming in the phone) show me the money.”

McGuire responded by screaming into the telephone at “Show me the money.” Diana Tarusi of the WNBA Mecury might not be screaming but she’s making the same type of statement. Tarusi is “sitting out” the WNBA season after her Russian team requested, they are paying her 3X her Mercury salary. Britney Griner might soon be making the same type of commitment. The Zhejiang Golden Bulls in China are paying Griner 12X her WNBA salary.

A sense of entitlement
A number of Kansas fans will be upset with this account, this is advance notice don’t read it.for it’s likely to offend. I’ve mentioned on several occasions media coverage in the Kansas City market leans heavily in the favor of Kansas. This past Saturday Oklahoma State was an upset winner over Kansas, Oklahoma State fans rushed the court at the conclusion of the game. I believe this is dangerous and I wish fans would refrain from it. At the same time I understand the enthusiasm of some fans when their team is an upset winner over a team they were not expected to succeed.

What I fail to understand are members of the media only critical of the practice when it occurs against their Jayhawks. If these folks were part of the Kansas broadcast crew I might understand their objection. The first time I remember hearing this type of complaint was last season, Iowa State upset Kansas and Cyclone fans rushed the court. As I stated previously I believe the practice is hazardous however I never heard either comment on the safety issue. They appear to be more concerned with the fact their Jayhawks were losers. Have they failed to understand the winning tradition from the basketball program at Kansas over the decades is the key.

Dead man walking
The term “Dead man walking” became familiar to many who saw the 1996 Sean
Penn-Susan Sarandon movie. For those who may not be familiar with the term it applies to prison inmates facing execution. A little over two weeks ago this writer pronounced Cavs Coach David Blatt a “Dead man walking.” A number of different stories were circulating about the coach and his team. I speculated Blatt might be terminated. Funny how winning cures all ills, the Cavs are on a 12-game winning streak as this is written. I‘m certainly not declaring them 2015 NBA Champs however they are definitely playing better ball at this point. Despite my doom n gloom prediction it appears David Blatt is safe----for now.

Lead leader in
Technical fouls have become the mantra of the Clippers. The other Los Angeles team leads the league in this unflattering category. After the Thursday evening game against the Cavs the Clippers now have a league leading 58 technicals. Matt Barnes is tied with two others for the league lead with 11. Sitting in fourth place is Blake Griffin with 9, from there we drop down to Chris Paul and Jamal Crawford both with 4. Spencer Hawes 2, J.J. Reddick and Austin Rivers 1 tech apiece. Where am I going with this account, it was pointed out this is the third consecutive year the Clippers have lead the league in technical fouls. ESPN’s Jalen Rose said and I paraphrase; “Officials develop “rabbit ears” they hear constant comments and complaints from the same players.”

Maybe once you get into the playoffs you don’t get a call you think you should have received.” We end this account by detailing a portion of the tirade Paul aimed at rookie official Lauren Holtkamp. He said; "That's ridiculous. If that's the case, this
(NBA officiating) might not be for her.” Holtkamp has several years of officiating behind her, it’s not Paul’s job to judge the competency of league officials. At the end of the season the NBA grades its roster of officials, if she receives below par grades she will be terminated. We cannot read between the lines to determine Paul’s intent, we have no idea if his tirade was aimed at the official was not qualified due to her gender. In my view Paul is guilty of lack of respect for the official, there I said it.

NAIA first then Division I
Louisville won the 1948 NAIA Tournament before moving to Division I. Researching this account I discovered several schools begin competing at the NAIA level prior to becoming Division I schools. Listed below is a short list of several familiar schools which began competition first at the NAIA level.

San Diego State
Southeast Missouri State
Indiana State
Tennessee State
Grambling
Grand Canyon
Southern Illinois University
Missouri State

This should give you an idea why the NAIA Tournament no longer holds the prestige it once did. For a variety of reasons these institutions decided to enhance the standing of their sports programs. It’s likely we’ll never see another Willis Reed (Grambling & Knicks) or Jack Sikma (Illinois Wesleyan & Sonics) become an NBA draft choice.

What happened?
I’m looking at the Wichita State-Drake game and wondered what happened to Drake basketball. At one time the school was a force in the Missouri Valley Conference but no more; they entered this game with only 3 wins and would suffer defeat number 10. Does the school no longer want to compete? Over the last 14 years the Bulldogs have only experienced four winning seasons, the best was 28-5 in 2007-08. Winning for Drake became a thing in the ‘70’s twice making it to the NCAA Elite Eight even facing down the mighty Bruins of UCLA.

Coach Maury John would leave after the ‘70-‘71 season and the downfall began. Despite a number of coaching changes over the years only Keno Davis’s ‘07-’08 team would taste success in the NCAA. At the current rate this edition of Drake basketball will finish below .500. I have no proof just a theory, sometimes schools feel they no longer want to contend. A school wants to continue athletic competition but not at the expense of challenging the UCLA’s, Kentucky’s and Duke’s for the services of athletes.

There is a distinction between lack of talent and lack of effort!
-------Larry Laker

600
714 home runs was a significant number established by Yankee great Babe Ruth. He hit that final home run in 1935. The record remained until May 1974 when the Braves Hank Aaron hit number 715. The LeBron led Heat didn’t exceed the 33 game win streak of the Lakers but came close in 2013 with 27. 600 is not a record because the number should be exceeded in two days. This Words eye edition is the 600th publication since it was first begun.

Thank you for continuing to read about basketball written from a fans perspective, I couldn’t have accomplished this feat without loyal and dedicated readers. As I’ve often stated I’ve never believed my opinion is the only one out there and the only valid one. At the same time I enjoy researching the history of the game I believe many are unaware of the historical ramifications of the game. Thank you, thank you and if you enjoy pass Words on to your friends, family and acquaintances who love basketball.

Surprise, surprise
Unlike TV’s Gomer Pyle this was no surprise. Stories have circulated for awhile the Magic intended to terminate the contract of head coach Jacque Vaughn. Several news agencies are reporting it was done on Thursday. Vaughn was on the staff of Gregg Popovich for years so he had plenty of time to prepare for the role of head coach. We are unable to determine at this stage if Vaughn is head coach material, perhaps he’ll get another opportunity somewhere.

Love versus Wiggins
ESPN wanted to take note of Kevin Love’s first visit to Minnesota as the enemy. If I was forced to vote which team gained the most from the trade currently I’d say it’s even. If you remember Love had indicated since last season he wanted out of the Twin Cities. After LeBron James signed with the Cavs he placed the general managers hat on and “indicated he’d like the Cavs to acquire Love.” The Wolves were not going to allow Love to simply walk as free agent they wanted compensation in return. The compensation turned out to be Andrew Wiggins. If we are to determine which team gained an advantage let’s consider age first Andrew Wiggins is 19 years old while Love turned 26 last fall the advantage must be in the Wolves favor. As for the balance of the intangibles I believe the two teams are even.

Love has scored at a 17 point a game clip while snatching down 10 rebounds, as for Wiggins he’s at nearly 16 points a game 4 rebounds and nearly 2 assists a game. With the Bucks Jabari Parker sidelined with an injury it’s like the 6-8 Wiggins will be named Rookie of the Year. The Wolves Andrew Wiggins is clearly the leader for NBA Rookie of the Year. You remember me; I’m the guy who pronounced Jabari Parker the winner. Parker then went out and injured himself, he may have done it on purpose to prove me wrong. As this is written Wiggins has scored in double figures in 21 consecutive games pretty darn good for a rookie. The Cavs are certainly better than the Wolves at this point but will it remain so? A studio host said; “Who would the Cavs prefer to have Wiggins or Love for the next 15 years?”

He’s the reason
There have been other athletes prior to Mike Conley Jr., those whom I misjudged their ability. I believed Conley Jr. was not ready for the NBA after but one year of college play. My eyes (and NBA scouts) were focused on his Ohio State teammate Greg Oden. Oden possessed all the skills that appeared lacking in Conley Jr. It didn’t hurt that Oden stood 7 feet tall and was a solid 250 pounds of muscle. One scout even went so far as to compare his game to that of the legendary Bill Russell.

We know the balance of the Oden story continuing injuries have forced him to the sidelines he is no longer in the league. As for Conley Jr. his game and skill as a points guard continue to develop. Note I’ve borrowed the Dan Patrick for this new generation of guards who develop as much skill shooting as distributing the basketball. Conley Jr. is in his 8th year in the NBA and no one will ever mistake him for Derrick Rose or Chris Paul. He’s not flashy but manages to get the job done for his Grizzlies team who this year is at the top of the NBA.

Bits n Pieces
I’ve learned the Heat will have no advantage in signing Hassan Whiteside in 2016, I won’t go into complete detail just follow this brief explanation. Most times a host team can reward its free agent at a greater sum than teams bidding for that player services. The contract Whiteside signed with the Heat and the two years playing for the Kings brought about this strange and unusual occurrence.

Jordan Hill hinted he would have left if the Lakers had kept Mike D’Antoni. Despite the down year the team is experiencing Hill was having a career year. A hip injury will keep him out of the lineup for the next two weeks. The numbers are not eye-popping however Jordan was expected to play defense, rebound and block shots. He’s scoring 12.3 points and grabbing 8 rebounds a game.

Friends and acquaintances say I should turn off sports talk radio and maybe they are correct. Yesterday the host (and one of the station owners) made an incredibly stupid proclamation. This host said; “Lon Kruger (Oklahoma coach) is satisfied finishing behind the Kansas Jayhawks every season. His teams are successful enough he makes the NCAA every season.” How could this host twist his lips to state a coach of any team would be satisfied with a second place finish?

An addendum to the above, one more sign of the forthcoming Apocalypse I agree with Skip Bayless. In his point-counterpoint debate with Stephen A. Smith he made the following statement which I’ll paraphrase. He said; “Russell Westbrook is a talent however he’s unsure if the Thunder can win with him vying for shots with Kevin Durant.” Its not lack of talent for either it appears point guard Westbrook wants to lead the team in assists and scoring.

There is a distinction between lack of talent and lack of effort!
-------Larry Laker

Retire number 16
In the midst of another losing streak Laker fans demonstrated their appreciation of Pau Gasol. Management passed out “Thanks Pau” tee-shirts and presented a video tribute prior to the Lakers-Bulls game. Even Kobe fresh from surgery and reported still in pain met with Pau before the game. I’m unsure if it will occur however I’d certainly would be okay if it did, I believe Gasol’s number 16 should be hung in Staples Center. In my opinion he’s the BEST power forward in Laker history. For this non-scientific poll we’ll consider power forwards from Laker championship teams only.

The name Harold “Hap” Hairston might be unknown to many of you. He played power forward on the 1972 Laker the first to win a championship in Los Angeles. His teammates included Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain and Gail Goodrich. We could consider Kurt Rambis and AC Green both occupied the position at different time frames with the Showtime Lakers. During Phil Jackson’s tenure as coach three power forwards provided significant contributions, Robert Horry, Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol. Of all the power forwards Gasol is the only one who will be elected to the Naismith Hall of Fame once eligible.

Who is this guy?
People are asking questions about Heat center Hassan Whiteside. He’s burst on the NBA landscape recording several outstanding games. He’s a 25-year old 7 footer who played collegiate ball at Marshall University. In 2010 Whiteside would become the third pick in the second round of the 2010 draft. He remained on the Kings roster through 2012 since then he’s been on a basketball odyssey. D-League to Lebanon to China and back to Lebanon and China again. Whiteside landed once again with another D-League team. On November 24 2014 he signed with the Heat and was assigned to Sioux Falls in the D-League but was recalled two days later.  Early in January Whiteside recorded his first double-double, he is scoring in double-figures and rebounds. On January 25 Whiteside recorded a triple-double with a record 12 blocked shots in a game against the Bulls. Will he continue to exhibit January numbers for the balance of the season? History often states it takes big men a greater amount of time to adjust their game to the NBA level. In any event this might be the “feel-good” story of 2015. I can see the story written about him; “A journeyman career was in front of him given but given an opportunity to play Whiteside has become the Heats rising star.“ Well it could develop in that manner couldn’t it?

He love’s coaching
Prior to Larry Brown’s arrival there was little to cheer about Southern Methodist basketball. SMU experienced few winning seasons from the 1995 season up to the time Brown was hired. That first year under Brown’s helm the Mustangs finished with a 15-17 record. Last season’s team finished 27-10 and this years team is on its way to a second consecutive 20 win season (9-3 as this is written). I’ve written previously the SMU Mustangs might have the oldest active coach (74) in history.

Brown is coaching at an age most men have long since retired however he coaches for love of the game. One thing for sure no age discrimination existed when he was hired at the age of 71. With Coach K. passing the 1,000 win plateau I wondered about Brown‘s won-loss record. As this is written Brown has only won 405 collegiate games. As for his coaching in the pro ranks that’s a different story. He won 229 games while coaching in the ABA and another 1,098 in the NBA for a grand total of 1,732 games.

Rivalries
After viewing the Kentucky-Louisville battle of the state I wondered about others. From an outside view North Carolina-North Carolina State doesn’t appear to be too much of a rivalry. North Carolina-Duke certainly is a natural rivalry; the two schools are located less than 30 minutes drive time from one another. Although the two schools are located in the same city I’m unsure if UCLA-USC is a true rivalry. Someone once said; “in order to have a true rivalry victories cannot be one-sided.” For the most part in basketball UCLA has been the dominant team. Michigan-Michigan State might appear to be rivals but it appears at least in football its Michigan-Ohio State.

As for my next door neighbors it’s difficult to view Kansas-Kansas State as true rivals, as with others this one leans heavily toward the Kansas side. Kansas might have had more a rivalry with Missouri in football and basketball that goes back to the early portion of the 20th century. We hear a great deal of conversation about Alabama-Auburn although this one too appears more football heavy than basketball. I would guess Georgia-Georgia Tech in the same manner the pigskin sport over the round ball. There are others I’ve failed to mention due to space constraints you can add those you believe belong here, this is just “food for thought.”

There is a distinction between lack of talent and lack of effort!
-------Larry Laker

They call him coach because he can
Steve Fisher will forever be tied to the Fab Five and Michigan basketball despite the fact he‘s been head man at San Diego State since 1999. Although he’s never played for a national championship at the California school like he did at Michigan Fisher is still a winner. At the time Fisher was hired the basketball program was close to sinking into the Pacific Ocean. In fact that first season the Aztecs finished 5-23, from the 2005-06 season on the Aztecs have been consistent winners under Fisher. The 2010-11 team finished the season 34-3 and two years later his Aztecs compiled a 31-5 record. If we requested a list of winning college coaches it’s likely Fisher’s name would be omitted. He just produces a winner that’s why his players call him coach.

Consider this
Duke was facing number 2 undefeated Virginia. In addition the game was a road game for the Blue Devils and they were coming off a loss to conference rival Notre Dame. Later Duke announced guard Rasheed Sulaimon had been dismissed from the team the first time a player had ever been discharged. Duke wasn’t a deep team anyway but would be even thinner minus Sulaimon.

Virginia wanted to limit touches for Duke’s Jahlil Okafor which worked; Okafor was held to 10 points and 9 rebounds. The backcourt of Tyus Jones and Quinn Cook took over taking shot after shot to bring Duke back from the point of defeat. Freshman Jones with “ice-water” flowing through his veins sank a crucial 3-point basket with about 10 seconds remaining in the game. Final score Duke 69 Virginia 63 thus Virginia falls from the ranks of the undefeated.  This leaves Kentucky as the lone Division I team with an unblemished record.

Point of diminished returns
I admit it I may have been wrong in my prior examination of Jason Kidd. I was highly critical of him last season leaving the Nets for the Bucks. In fact I wrote a critique of the move questioning why. It certainly was Kidd’s prerogative to change jobs however I thought he’d been favored in the hiring process in the beginning. Kidd had move from sitting next to the coach to becoming the coach in a single bound. He‘d put in no time serving as an assistant coach. I believed at the time the Nets must have favored him very highly. As for current Coach Lionel Hollins I’ve believed for quite awhile the guy can coach.

Despite this fact the 2015 Nets have played far below last season’s level. Sure injuries have impacted them as with other NBA teams but that’s not the single issue. Paul Pierce is in Washington now but his game has been headed downward for awhile, Kevin Garnett’s has eroded even more. The aforementioned players’ could no longer play major minutes. Perhaps seeing this team built for a short run Kidd might have believed the Nets had reached the point of “diminished returns.” There was no value for him to remain with a team headed downhill. All this could be true however maybe it’s just what I believe might have entered Jason Kidd’s mind and empacted his decision to leave the Nets.

Bits n Pieces
On several occasions I’ve mentioned Kansas City is home to what might be the largest contingent of sports architects firms in the nation. AT&T Center, Toyota Center, Barclays Center, the United Center, Pepsi Center and Philips Arena are just a few of the arenas Kansas City firms designed or partnered with other firms. Of course these firms cannot sustain revenue designing arenas and stadiums only. A friend sent an article from one of the San Francisco newspapers. Reading the article I discovered Manica Architects is responsible for the design of the planned arena for the Warriors, the building is proposed to open for the 2018-19 season. Bet you can’t guess what city Manica Architects is located?

I’ve mentioned previously I don’t believe in “moral victories.” As an example the first

Mizzou-Kentucky game the Wildcats won 86-37. In the second meeting Kentucky won again this time 69-53; final score was an improvement you agree? Well not exactly the Tigers finished 0-2 against the Wildcats and have never beaten them while in the Big 12 or SEC.  Playing an improved game but still losing proves nothing except you didn't win the game.

Recently “Mr. Cub” Ernie Banks died at the age of 83. This baseball legend won the 1958 and 1959 MVP awards despite the fact he was unable to lead the Cubs out of last place. In an exchange recently Stephen A. Smith decided Anthony Davis is not MVP worthy. He didn’t deny the talent he said; “Davis must lead the Pelicans into playoff contention.” The Pelicans are 24-22 as this is written and set in 9th place one below qualifying for the playoffs. It’s possible they could make the playoffs however if they don’t does that eliminate Davis from MVP consideration?

We are fast approaching the NBA All Star game. Last year at this time we knew David Stern would step down however we knew virtually nothing about Adam Silver. He’d served as deputy commissioner for years however he’d been in the background. How would he handle the job was the first question? He handled the first crisis dealt him swift and decisive action. I speak of Donald Sterling and forcing the sale of the Clippers, for that he receives an A. The balance of his tenure has been rather bland.
