Basketball from a fans perspective

Bits n Pieces
"I will not go gentle into the night" with apologies to Dylan Thomas Welsh Poet I took liberty with his villanelle.  Kobe Bryant talking real world said; "I don't know what I will do without basketball."  At the same time he made no acknowledgement he would retire despite entering his 20th season in the NBA and the injuries the last three seasons.  A friend the other day said; "Phil (Jackson) is trying to get him to New York."  Try as Phil might I don't believe this will occur, Kobe will retire as a Laker, I can't guarantee it I just believe it.

Despite what we often read about the excesses of NBA players a number have a community mind set.  True a number have a ME only complex but others understand and give back.  Wizard John Wall gave a Washington D.C. Daycare $400,00 just the other day.  Former Laker Devean George is building affordable housing for low-income residents in Minneapolis.  LeBron James is known in the community as much as the basketball court for his efforts to better the community.  There are a significant number of NBA players I've failed to mention but my desire was to bring to your attention all are not self-serving.

I'm still a fan of Larry Brown despite the recent news.  A writer at SI and one at USA Today both believe Brown should be fired.  The NCAA ruled his Southern Methodist University team is ineligible for post-season play.  We must guess not on the NCAA tourney but the NIT as well, in addition the coach is suspended for 30%  or 9 games this season.  I'm guessing the games missed will be those of his choice.  The NCAA believes there is lack of head coach control.  An indictment by the NCAA is always suspect to me even if it involves one of my favorite coaches.

Some how I missed the Deron Williams story, I remember writing an account earlier in which I stated his game had soured.  Over the last few years as a member of the Nets less injury he never duplicated his days with the Jazz.  In June Williams and the Nets agreed to a buy-out later in the middle of July Williams agreed to an offer with the Mavs.  Williams is returning home in a sense having attended high school in the Dallas area.  Perhaps with the Mavs and playing in from of his family he will be able to resume his All-Star numbers again.

The count is unofficial on my part so I'm not claiming it's accurate, I discussed the fact Kim Anderson recruits are now filtering into the Mizzou program.  6 Anderson recruits arrived with the beginning of the fall semester next year the two recruits committing this month will arrive.  Athletes sometimes fall into difficulties with coaches just having your recruits is no guarantee for success.  What do I expect you ask, I certainly expect more than a repeat of the 9-23 record of last season.

UCLA no longer dominates the basketball landscape as it did during the '60's and '70's.  During a portion of those years Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Bill Walton were roaming the paint an explanation as to why UCLA was a beast on the basketball court.  The two former Bruin centers have a problem with the current state of Bruin basketball and Coach Steve Alford.  Kareem was a 3-time NCAA Championship team, much later Walton's team would win 88-consecutive games.  The two giants believe UCLA should play at a much higher level than it has under Alford's tenure.

Basketball from a fans perspective

The season is upon us
We are almost there, NBA training camps open September 29th. Teams participating in the Global Games have already begun training. October 4th the Clippers play the Raptors in Vancouver in the first game of the 2015 NBA Canada Series. On October 6th Olimpia Milano plays the Celtics in Milan Italy.

Why don‘t you
I have a friend originally from Denver but now lives in the Kansas City Metro. Denver. Despite all those around him Dave continues to root for his Denver teams, the Broncos especially and the Nuggets. I haven’t asked but it’s likely he favors the Rockies too. Dave’s never asked me but might wonder why I hardly ever write about the Nuggets. There’s really no reason in fact I like the Nuggets except when they play my Lakers. The former ABA franchise founded in 1967 actually belonged to Kansas City. For reasons that remain a mystery to me adequate dates could not be secured for Municipal Auditorium. The building was the only arena available at the time, Kemper (1974) and Sprint (2007) would open much later. The scheduling problem caused the franchise to be awarded to Denver interests and Kansas City would bow out. Recent Hall of Fame inductee Spencer Haywood had already made a name for but bloomed in the rarified Denver Air.

In the 1969-70 season the 6-8 Haywood would lead the ABA in scoring (30.0) and rebounding (19.5). Unseld would be named ABA Rookie of the Year and ABA MVP a rare feat only Wilt Chamberlain and Wes Unseld have ever accomplished. In 1974 the franchise name was changed from Rockets to the Nuggets. Fast forward to the ABA-NBA war as the leagues fought over college players. It would conclude in 1976 with four ABA franchises folded into the NBA with the Nuggets one of that number. We then had the Alex English years when the smooth shooting forward was a key feature for the Nuggets. Fast forward again to the Carmelo Anthony and company who would later be joined by Allen Iverson. The 2013 Nuggets would win 57 games a mark they hadn’t reached since their ABA days. The last two years the team’s played below .500 basketball with the hire of Coach Mike Malone maybe the light might be the end of the tunnel.

“I’m back”
With the above statement Michael Jordan announced he was returning to the Bulls. He would end his nearly two year retirement and return to the game that made him a superstar----basketball. You remember he abruptly retired after winning a championship with the Bulls and later announced he was going to play baseball. His financial clout did not aid Jordan in hitting a curve ball even in the minors. There was no announcement this time around and the player involved is nowhere close to Jordan in skill.

Metta World Peace aka Ron Artest is headed back to the Lakers; you remember the mercurial forward played a vital role in the Lakers 2010 NBA Championship. After playing several years in China and Italy he’s returning to the team on a 1-year non-guaranteed contract. Laker fans don’t expect the 2004 NBA Defensive Player of the Year or the 4X All Defensive Team member is now 35 years old. I believe the hope is he will mentor Julius Randle and other front court players on playing defense.

Bits n Pieces
The majority of time a discussion of professional basketball occurs the conversation focus is the NBA. It ain’t exactly the NBA however a large number of teams “play for pay” throughout the nation. If we exclude the NBA and its D-League affiliation there are 12 leagues playing basketball throughout the country. A number play a spring schedule while others adopt a more traditional winter-spring format. The leagues are small as the 4 team American Basketball League and as large as the 68 team American Basketball Association which has no connection whatsoever to the original ABA.

The Spurs struck it rich in free agency; we have no idea if they win the 2016 NBA Championship. They are defiantly on the road with the players they signed but success is likely based on a hold-over. Coach Pop, David Robinson, Avery Johnson, Tony Parker and Manu have contributed to the Spurs achievements over the years. Other than the coach it’s been “The Big Fundamental” or Timmy who’s been a key to Spurs victories. Tim Duncan is 39 and will have another birthday before the end of the 2015-16 season. In 1927 one of the songs written for the musical “Show Boat” was titled Ol’ Man River. One of the lines from the song; “But ol’ man river He jes’ keeps rollin’ along.” That’s Timmy or the “The Big Fundamental” he just keeps rolling along eventually into the Naismith Hall of Fame.

The Wisconsin senate passed the funding bill for Milwaukee’s planned arena. Passage ensures the Bucks will remain in the city for now and into the future. Once upon a time cities began building arenas and stadiums in the suburbs however that view no longer exists. This arena in the manner of others will be constructed in downtown Milwaukee. The design team will be led by Populous a Kansas City based architectural firm. I once made a statement economic times would dictate no more stadiums and arenas built with public funds. Thanks Milwaukee for making me wrong once again.

Basketball from a fans perspective

“O Canada”
The NBA and Canada has a history many of you probably don‘t realize. We might tend to believe the association began and ended with the Raptors however they are only a fraction of the account. The Canadian NBA connection extends much earlier than the Raptors and it actually was in Toronto. The Huskies who called Toronto home were born in 1946 in the Basketball Association of America (predecessor to the NBA). On November 1, 1946 they played host to the first BAA game in history losing to the Knicks of New York. Sadly the 1946-47 season would be the only one in the teams’ history.

Once again the NBA looked north in 1995 adding two teams through expansion.
The Raptors of Toronto and the Grizzlies in Vancouver were both born. For the second time in its history the NBA operated outside the boundaries of the U.S. The Grizzlies would remain in Vancouver until 2001 when they moved to Memphis (TN). The team was struggling financially and then the NBA Lockout would occur which proved to be the death sentence for the Grizzlies in Canada. As for possible future expansion Montreal Quebec with a metro population of over 4 million could be a possible site for NBA expansion. Montreal had a team in the National Basketball League of Canada; the Jazz played one season but folded after failing to secure new ownership.

Speaking of Canada
By the time this account is published the deed might be concluded. Canadian and number one pick (2013 NBA Draft) Anthony Bennett had his contract bought out by the Wolves. The Wolves must believe it’s better to pay him to leave rather than keep him. What happened might be the next question? I can only speculate on how these series of events occurred.

Bennett certainly has size (6-8 245) maybe injuries and the pressure of being the number one pick have played mind games with his head. Bennett managed to remain in Cleveland for two years before he was traded last August to the Wolves. If we check his Cavs-Wolves stats we might understand why. 39% field goal 3.4 rebounds and 4.7 points per game are not numbers to excite any team. Bennett left UNLV after his freshman year he won’t turn 23 until next March.

Another commit
Mizzou on the recruiting trail announced a second 2016 commitment this month. Willie Jackson a 6-6 215 pound small forward appears headed to Mizzou after providing his verbal agreement. Jackson a Rivals 3-star prospect is from Garfield Heights (OH) a suburb of Cleveland (OH). Among other schools Jackson considered were Boston College, Wichita State, Temple, Cleveland State and Akron.

Mark your calendar
January 30 2015 is a Saturday, that’s the date for the match of two storied programs. Kansas playing the game since 1899 has won 2,153 games leading into the 2015-16 college season. Kentucky beginning its program in 1903 is winners of 2,178 games. The game will be played in Lawrence (KS) at Allen Fieldhouse. Allen Fieldhouse opened in 1952 has been renovated four times throughout the years. Using our imagination we can almost see Wilt Chamberlain streaking down the court for a slam dunk or blocking opposing teams shot.

There were other Kansas greats, the sharp shooting Jo Jo White or Danny Manning. Then we have Clyde Lovellette and his one-handed set shot in the 1950‘s. Kansas had the legendary Phog Allen prowling the sidelines of Allen. He would coach the Jayhawks from 1919 to 1956. The Wildcats of Kentucky also were led by a giant of the game Adolph Rupp; Rupp would serve as head coach from 1930 through the 1972 season. The two schools also share success at the NCAA level; Kentucky’s a winner of 8 and Kansas 3.

He’s been cleared
Laker fans figured Kobe would be ready for action in 2015-16, now they are sure. He’s been medically cleared to begin training camp and hopefully an injury free season. Byron Scott says; “I intend to limit his (Kobe) minutes once the season begins. He will sit the second game of back to backs.” No problem for this Laker fan I believed for at least two years Kobe played far too many minutes for an athlete his age and mileage on his body. I for one am anxious to see how this plan works out. What happens if a game is in question and Kobe’s exceeded his minutes you think Scott will hesitate?

Basketball from a fans perspective

Who wrote the report?

Scouting reports have proven key in accessing the potential of an athlete. What they cannot do is provide us insight into the drive or what I like to refer to as the heart of an athlete. We know for a fact no one performs at the max skill level in every facet of the game that’s a given. I found it interesting a company utilized Step Curry in advertising their product. They have Curry reading an assessment from a 2009 draft report on him. "He will have limited success at the next level, do NOT rely on him to run your team.” Curry’s game has flaws as do others but the statement “limited success” really jumps off the page at us. I wonder if the scout who made the assessment continues to work in the same capacity.

Faith in Haith
I remain a Frank Haith fan despite the “bad blood” that exists between him and several of the Mizzou family. A number of the Tiger faithful blame Haith for last season’s 9-23 record the worst in school history. Jordan Clarkson, Jabari Brown and others left Mizzou and they were the bulk of the offense (and defense). Maybe Haith might be responsible for fanning the flames of discontent; “I could have won 20 games had I remained at Mizzou.”

There is no method to prove Haith’s point so the question might be unrealistic. The cupboard wasn’t exactly bare at the time Haith departed for Tulsa. I affirm once again I’m okay with the Kim Anderson hire but it was clear several players were not. The bulk of the roster last season was comprised of Haith recruits Anderson failed to win over. Several Haith recruits remain however Anderson has added players he’s recruited to the mix. The 2015-16 season should prove to be interesting.

For real?
Under his Ball Don’t Lie column Yahoo’s Eric Freeman wrote; “Is Dwight Howard still a superstar?” My question for Freeman and you did Howard ever fit that role? I can remember his days with the Magic and if we subtract the last two years he appeared on the road to superstardom. No one can get inside Howard’s head to decide what is really going on but the impression is he’s all fun and games. He never gained an offensive game despite having Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Hakeem Olajuwon as tutors. The offensive game ship has likely sailed at age 30 players don’t usually get better.

At this stage of Howard’s career his best asset might be defending the basket and rebounding the ball. The talents (defense and rebounding) led Dikembo Mutombo into the Naismith Hall of Fame despite the fact he exhibited a very limited offensive game. Truth is Howard’s offensive game is superior to that of Mutombo so you get the point. I once wrote (and still believe) Howard might be one of those athletes who prefer a supporting role. It could be his poor free-throw shooting impacts his game and he fears taking charge. In conclusion Dwight Howard just might be a very good player but superstar----I have my doubts.

Championship wins
How do you total championship wins and losses I guess it depends on your perspective or vested interest? Sounds simple enough but allow me to expound on this question. Several Kobe haters have stated; “Kobe won three of his championships while Shaq was a teammate.” Okay figure this one out, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith claims; “I don’t count LeBron’s championship losses (2 wins-4 losses). Last season he was exhausted and had no help.”

What a dim-witted statement by Smith, come on I thought you were better than that. In an earlier account Smith stated the Jerry West NBA logo should be changed. He believed it should be more reflective of players of this generation, he further mentioned the number of NBA Championships Jerry West teams had lost. Hey Stephen A. you can’t have it both ways, it appears you have an out of the ordinary view of NBA history.

Basketball from a fans perspective

The first

I guess this might be considered payback in a manner of speaking. Guard Jimmy Whitt left Columbia (MO) home of Mizzou for Arkansas. Whitt played for Columbia Hickman so the Mizzou staff had plenty of opportunity to witness his play. It was considered a coup for Mike Anderson’s staff to “steal” this talent from under the noses of the Mizzou coaches. Van Buren (AR) is about 60 miles from Fayetteville home of the University of Arkansas, Mizzou counters the Arkansas accomplishment.

Mizzou served as host for two prospects over this past weekend. Mitchell Smith is a 6-10 195 pound center is from Van Buren and rated a 3-star prospect by Rivals. As you might note he’s thin for a 6-10 athlete, we can be assured Smith might be spending considerable time in the weight room. Whitt leaves Missouri for Arkansas and now Smith will leave Arkansas for Missouri. For those who might be unfamiliar with the geography the two states share a common border. It should be noted this is not a done deal Smith is a verbal at this stage and has plenty of time to change his mind.

Change
Has the NBA changed its mind regarding college coaches? For years NBA teams avoided hiring college coaches and there was a reason. With the exception of Larry Brown few managed to taste success at the NBA level. The Celtics had reached into the college ranks and hired Brad Stevens from Butler University. Stevens has made a smooth transition into the NBA while he re-builds the Celtic team and its image. The next coaches’ name was first circulated several years ago; Billy Donovan was announced as the incoming head coach of the Magic.

Prior to a scheduled press conference Donovan changed his mind. Since then his name would occasionally be mentioned as an NBA candidate. Last spring the NBA came calling once again and this time Donovan accepted. Donovan may have believed this might be his last opportunity to coach at the NBA level; he will coach the Thunder when the season begins. Fred “The Mayor” Hoiberg worshiped in Ames (IA) was finally lured from Iowa State; he replaces Tom Thibodeau as head coach of the Bulls.

Well read or he was informed
I’m not Shawn Bradley” so said Kristaps Porzingas number one draft choice of the Knicks. You might remember a couple of weeks ago President Phil Jackson compared the slender Porzingas to former NBA player Shawn Bradley. Porzingas indicated he was aware Jackson often uses statements to fire-up players. His response leads me to believe he’s read one of the many books written about Phil Jackson or somebody informed him the tune the Zen Master often “sings.” Not satisfied with simply being the top pick Porzingas has been working all summer in the weight room in addition to playing for the Knicks Summer League team. It’s reported he’s gain 11 pounds which places him in the 235-240 pound range which is still light for someone nearly 7-2.

The Big East Conference
The ESPN college page ran a headline about The Big East Conference which prompted this account. I give credit where due however I didn’t read the story just based this on my research. The Big East Conference continues to exist today but certainly not in its original form. I’m not sure of the forces that transformed the conference but football has got to be one of the culprits. At its founding in 1979 we could state with conviction the conferences emphasis was on its basketball programs rather than football.

After schools begin defecting to the ACC the Big Ten and other conferences a name change was in order. It’s now the American Athletic Conference and is no longer east coast only, Tulsa (OK) and Tulane (LA) would be examples of new schools. The Big East (restructured in 2013) could easily be named the “Catholic” conference. Of the 10 schools only Butler University is not affiliated with a church or other institution. Original members Georgetown and St. John’s remain in place.

A Reconnect
Those who might live in Metro Detroit have received the news already. The Pistons are utilizing former Piston All Star (and former mayor) Dave Bing in a series of ads. The Pistons are attempting to connect with the City of Detroit and its residents. The Palace at Auburn Hills has served as home base since the “Bad Boy” days. Prior to Auburn Hills the team played in the Pontiac Silver dome a football built stadium for a number of years. Truth is told the Pistons have not legitimately worn a jersey with Detroit on the front since 1978 when they move to the Silverdome. Perhaps it’s a location issue more than anything since The Palace is located some 32 miles from downtown Detroit.

I once drove from Kansas City (MO) to Lawrence (KS) a one-way trip of 36 miles to see a basketball game. I’m sure I wouldn’t make that round trip of 72 miles two or three times a week no matter how much I loved the game. Pistons management has expressed good intentions and a desire to connect with Detroit residents. Unless the team moves back to the city I’m unsure if Dave Bing, Kid Rock, Aretha Franklin or anyone else from Detroit might be able to convince residents this is their team. Once upon a time stadiums and arenas were being built in the suburbs of metro areas. For the most part that thought process no longer exists as we’ve witnessed a trend back to the city and downtown.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Change is difficult---sometimes
James Harden of the Rockets had been a Nike man until this summer. With an expiring contract Adidas made an all out effort to sign the Rockets shooting guard. They managed to lure Harden from Nike with a $200 million dollar 13 year contract. Despite the new shoe contract he was spotted recently in public wearing Nike Air Jordans. Shame on you James but it is pretty funny maybe only to me.

Almost there
Residents on both sides of the building issue might have believed a deal would never be reached. The occurrence I speak of is a new arena the Kings will call home in a little more than a year. Construction on the Golden 1 Center is progressing steadily and has planned opening in October 2016 in time for the start of the NBA season. The $477 million dollar arena will seat 17,500 but can be expanded to 19,000. Most of us living outside California have no idea who or what Golden 1 is; it’s a credit union serving most of the state.

I don’t believe you
It’s been my belief retraction of a story or clarification is never satisfactory for a number of people. Once they hear (or read) a story they never change their mind and no amount of convincing or clarification will change their mind. That’s the case with Kentucky’s John Calipari the hint of cheating in some manner is almost always mentioned by his critics. I’m not going back to the coaches’ tenure at UMass just elaborate on Memphis because the media reported a story there. At the time Calipari was to be honored with induction into the Naismith Hall of Fame a number in Memphis wanted to show their appreciation to him. The event was canceled a number of fans and alum are still upset about the NCAA probation levied after Calipari left.

The issue as I understand it surrounded former Memphis player Derrick Rose. The NCAA Clearing House declared Rose eligible not one time but twice. Later it was determined someone other than Rose took the exam. After the error was discovered the NCAA forced to address the issue decided in favor of punishing the school. The NCAA vacated 38 victories and erased the teams’ 2008 Final Four appearance. If a similar situation occurred to Mizzou I’d feel terrible but I couldn’t blame the coach or the school. The real culprit rather than Calipari was the NCAA stating Rose was eligible to play. Once the clearinghouse gives an okay is a coach expected to contact the NCAA and question them?

Bits n Pieces
The African continent continues to export basketball talent to the U.S. The latest is Udoka Azubuike a 5-star prospect in the Class of 2016. Azubuike home country is Nigeria located on the west coast of the continent. This 6-10 250 pound center has received offers from Florida, Florida State, Kentucky and Kansas to name a few schools. Azubuike is yet to declare a college; he attends the Potter’s House Christian Academy in Jacksonville Florida.

Paul Pierce long-time Celtic and now a Clipper said it. Growing up in Southern California he said as a youth he rooted for the Lakers. Of course his career went another direction his college ball was played at Kansas and then in the NBA most spent in Boston. We don’t know if Laker 2nd round draft pick Anthony Brown will make the final roster spot. Brown like Pierce also rooted for the Lakers growing up. Brown a small forward grew up in Bellflower (CA) a Los Angeles suburb. Unlike Pierce he never left California heading north to play for the Stanford Cardinal. What an opportunity the possibility of playing in front of family and friends in addition the team you idolize as a child.

Mark Gottfried and North Carolina State performed quite a coup recently. Dennis Smith a 6-3 guard from Fayetteville and the number four prospect in the Class of 2016 verbally committed. The 5-star Smith had to choose between Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, North Carolina State plus Louisville and several other schools. This might be one time Gottfried out dueled Coaches K, Williams, Calipari and Pitino.

I missed this hope you didn’t, the rules committee over the summer voted in favor of a reduced shot clock. College teams will now be working with a 30 second clock rather than 35. The belief is a shorter clock will increase scoring in the college game which has been going down steadily over the last few years. The move makes sense however a team still needs shooters which was evident in several games I saw last season.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Questions remain
I’m not sure now of last years prevailing thought, everyone believed in the Thunder. The question was could they entertain an NBA Championship? They had Kevin Durant, they had Russell Westbrook in other words it appeared they had all the tools. Then the injuries set in Serge Ibaka would play but 64 games, Triple-Double Westbrook played a mere 67 games. The key in my view Durant was limited to 27 games and sidelined twice. Although the Thunder managed to finish 45-37 in the tough Western Conference they missed the playoffs. Key injuries plus loss of confidence in Scotty Brooks likely contributed to him being fired.

Scotty Brooks was replaced by long-time Florida Coach Billy Donovan. If everyone returns healthy they should compete; can they win the West and an NBA Championship? Injuries aside the biggest issue might be who is in charge? Westbrook can pass the ball but most times appears to look for his shot; I’ve witnessed games Westbrook was a scoring dynamo. I’ve seen others where he took shot after shot no matter where he was on the court missing. Durant (when healthy) is the best shooter on this team; he should demand the ball be delivered to him. Will this team come together and rise to the level many believed they are capable of. That question and others will remain unanswered until June 2016.

I have no idea
Three words might apply for Robert Upshaw troubled, talented and undrafted.  All the terms might apply to the former Fresno State and Washington Husky player.  He played for both programs and both dismissed him despite his budding talent.  No school so why not try the NBA Upshaw applied for the 2015 NBA Draft.  His hopes were dashed when all 30 teams took a pass on him; his history was probably the cause.  The 7 foot 258 pound center would wind up playing for the Lakers Summer League team and though raw played respectable basketball.

During the summer reports circulated the Lakers “had signed him,” despite the reports the Lakers stated they hadn‘t signed him.  Despite the reports Upshaw insisted on several occasions “He would be a Laker.”  He is indeed a Laker finally; the team announced Upshaw was signed to a two-year deal.  Although Upshaw failed to play a full season for Washington his minutes based on a full game are quite interesting.  17 points and 13 rebounds along with 7 block shots a game are outstanding.  What should we expect from Upshaw you might ask, I have no idea just speculation.  The Laker roster currently stands at 18.

It’s likely
Allen “The Answer” Iverson is eligible for the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2016, is he a likely choice you ask?  Allow me to remind some of you and inform others how insightful I’ve been in the past.  I encountered a Bulls fan during the Jordan era with a question.  Terry asked me; “You think Dennis Rodman will ever be elected to the Hall of Fame?”  I thought for a moment about his question before I issued an emphatic no.  “He was outstanding at rebounding for an athlete 6-7 in addition he was a great defender, his antics both on and off the court might impact his selection.”

I’ve never believed my word is the last word and once again that turned out to be the case for Rodman.  In 2011 Rodman’s number was retired by the Bulls and later that year he was enshrined in the Naismith Hall of Fame.  As for Iverson similar questions regarding his behavior have dogged him since his high school days.  I have stated in the past and will repeat pound for pound the 6-foot (?) 155 pound Iverson might be the toughest player to ever play the game.

Comparison
A handful of off-spring has taken up basketball the sport of their fathers.  Just a few, the Barry brothers followed their father Rick; we have Joe Bryant and his son Kobe.  More recently the Curry brothers have become news following their dad Dell.  With the exception of a single Barry brother all others have managed NBA careers.  At this point we have no idea if Shareef O’Neal is good enough to even play at the collegiate level.

The 6-8 O’Neal son of Shaquille is just entering his sophomore year of high school; he’s “undersized” in height and weight in comparison to his famous dad.  The younger O’Neal is a wing and appears to have some skills that might outshine his dad one day in the not too far off future.  Video of him in action is available just in case you want to check him out.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Fo Fo Fo
Translation for the above, before the beginning of the 1983 playoffs Moses Malone was asked for his prediction of the outcome. His prediction each series win for the 76ers would be a sweep, four four and four. Yesterday we received word Moses Malone had died, Malone was a 3-time NBA Finals MVP and was 60 years old. Of the overabundance of players of that era I believe Malone never received the accolades of other lesser talented. A fairly good scorer however Moses was a furious rebounded and defender. Malone would preside another high school player and 76er center by one year. He was drafted by the Utah Stars of the ABA while Darryl Dawkins was drafted in 1975 by the 76ers. I have maintained the Kings would still have Kansas City emblazon on their jerseys if they hadn’t been so tight with dollars or just plain lacked vision.

In the 1976 ABA-NBA merger the Nets, Spurs, Nuggets and Pacers came into the NBA intact. The players belonging to teams that folded were placed in a pool to be drafted by NBA teams. The draft was held with the worst team record wise the opportunity to pick first. The Kings with the third worst record drafted guard Ron Boone a serviceable player who played with them for two years. Two picks later the Blazers selected Moses Malone, imagine drafting a 6-2 guard over the 6-10 Malone. The ABA had turned a corner in the eyes of many in developing quality talent, Malone averaged 17.2 points and 12.9 rebounds a game in his two-year ABA employment.
Early reports indicate Malone had passed away in his sleep. First Darryl Dawkins on August 27 and Malone September 13 two 76er centers. R.I.P. to both these giants of the game.

Hall of Fame
I was happy for Jo Jo White the Naismith Hall of Fame finally managed to call his name. At times the numbers don’t often impart the complete picture of an event or player and that’s the case with White. This talented athlete graduated high school in St. Louis but instead of Mizzou he headed west to play his college ball at Kansas. White was a gold medal winner in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. In addition he was a 7X NBA All Star and 2X NBA Champion (1974, 1976) including NBA Finals MVP (1976).

Have any idea how good an athlete he was you ask? Good enough to be drafted by the NFL Cowboys and MLB Reds, we could debate whether he might have found success if he’d chosen the other sports. Favoring the NBA and the Celtics would lead White to a 12-year NBA career the bulk spent wearing the green and white of the Celtics. The timing of his induction although late in life (68 years) is still rewarding for him. White suffered a serious health set back but is now recovered and should be able to enjoy this honor the balance of his life. Congratulations to Jo Jo White and all the other inductees.

Speaking of the Hall
Love him or hate him John Calipari is exceptional, Friday evening he did something I’ve never witnessed previously and probably never will again. Beginning his acceptance speech in the Naismith Hall of Fame he requested all his former players in attendance to come up on the stage. They begin walking toward the stage UMass, Memphis and Kentucky players 64 former players who played for Calipari at one.  The coach is not unique in one aspect, if you coach long enough you certainly can impact such a larger gathering.  It shouldn’t be lost on any of us the fact this many former players took time out from busy schedules to travel to Springfield (MA). They did this to honor their former coach, what does that say about the love and respect for John Calipari?

History versus fact
Can you guess which NBA team has the highest payroll? If you guessed it’s the Cavs you are mistaken, how about the Heat----wrong again. Maybe it’s the Lakers with the $25,000,000 salary they are paying Kobe Bryant? Wrong again it’s the Thunder of Oklahoma City at the top of the payroll pyramid. The Cavs sit at the third position, as for the Lakers with the astronomical money they are paying Kobe sit in the middle at the 15th position. So Kobe haters please refrain from stating; “The Lakers are handicapped signing players because of Kobe’s salary.” The Lakers may indeed have issues signing free agents however it has nothing to do with limited funds.

Davidson College
Are you familiar with Davidson College? Probably before Steph Curry arrived few of you were probably aware the school even existed. Believe it or not Curry is not the first NBA player from the North Carolina school. The first NBA player from the school was Fred Hetzel who arrived in the NBA in 1966 and played through 1971. Brandon Williams played 18 games in the association from 1998 to 2003.

The next Davidson player would become league MVP and go on to win an NBA Championship. That league MVP is named Stephen Curry. As for the school this liberal arts college is located in Davidson about 30 miles north of Charlotte. The school has sent six (6) players including Steph into the NBA. Doesn’t matter your size (Steph) or how small the size of your school (Davidson) if you have talent and can play the NBA will beat a path to your door.

Brazil in ‘Da House’

We discussed earlier the Lakers signed Marcelo Huteras from Brazil now for a little detail. At 32 years of age the Lakers are certainly not expecting Huteras to play the next 10 years or major minutes for that matter. The Lakers signed this veteran Euro point guard because he’s well schooled in pick and roll basketball. Huteras will provide a veteran presence to a very young Laker backcourt. The Lakers have signed several international players over the years however it’s my belief only two have played the backcourt. The Lakers drafted 6-9 Sun Yue from China in the 2007 NBA Draft a shooting/point guard.

#33
Zach Brown stands 7-1 the same height as a more famous number 33; at 256 pounds he’s a little heavier. Brown is a Rivals 5-star prospect and rated number five in the Class of 2017. I wonder if Brown releases the significance of his jersey number or just one he may have accidentally chose. For those who might be unaware 33 was worn by Kareem Abdul Jabbar throughout his high school, college and NBA career.

Brown from Miami Senior High School (FL) has offers from 9 of the 14 schools currently pursuing him. A jersey number is no authorization to affirm “I’ve made it,” it has nothing to do with Brown or anyone else’s future success. Once upon a time I questioned where have all the “aircraft carriers” gone? Big men have more difficulty raising the level of their game over guards and forwards, that is unless the 7-footer is just blessed with natural talent. One of the issues big men are often plagued with is work ethic hopefully this is not the case for Brown.

Are you sold on the man?
I don’t know about your barbershop but conversation at mine is 95% sports and 5% everything else. The other day we held a discussion on Steve Kerr and the Warriors. One of the barbers is not sold on Kerr at all, in fact he told the gathering; “All Kerr did was win with the talent Mark Jackson had assembled.” Well his statement might be true to an extant however we must look beneath the surface. I’m unsure what was expected of Kerr at the beginning of the season after all there was no coaching experience included in his resume. A reserve player during his NBA career he provided a valuable spark off the bench for the Bulls and Spurs.

In addition he was a key component to 5 NBA Championships. Kerr served as President and General Manager of the Suns and later an analyst for TNT. I believe (I offer no proof) playing for Phil Jackson and Gregg Popovich he absorbed practical lessons on how to coach. The only requirement was for some team to offer him the challenge of leading men. Is Kerr a long-term coach who will move from the Warriors to some other team? I guess it might occur but I see a far different future for Kerr one beyond coaching. I could envision him an NBA owner one day; I guess we all must wait for that day to come.

Ya---but I don’t think so
We hear and read from plenty of “experts” who claim the NBA game has changed. They point to the success of the Warriors using a small lineup to aid in their defeat of the Cavs. The game certainly has changed over the last several years you‘ve heard the old adage, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”. Naturally coaches have looked at the Warrior success and decided; “We need to play small ball. “ If you intend to play small ball you must have shooters similar to Curry and Thompson that’s a must. To simply look at your shooters and decide you don’t draft a big man when you have an opportunity is ridiculous.

ESPN’s Jay Bilas said; “You have an opportunity to draft a Shaq and you say I think I’ll take a guard is “ridiculous.” Unless the basket is lowered the game will continue to remain the domain of the “Big Man” despite all the talk of small ball. A “Big Man” must prove he can’t play a smaller man must prove he can play. All we need to do is check NBA draft history, there are more draft bust “Big Men” than others. Remember Hasheem Thabeet, Michael Olowonkandi and Darko Milicic just to name a few. These 7 footers (and others) came into the NBA with high expectations but proved to not be very talented.

National search
Recently we held a conversation not sports related. We mutually agreed a national search was required to fill a position. We could make that same statement for a number of basketball programs across the nation. How’d you like to be the coach who replaces
Mike Krzyzewski at Duke? Consider this fact North Carolina remained “in-house” going with long-time assistant Bill Guttridge when Dean Smith stepped down. Although Matt Doherty was a disaster as a head coach he was a former Tar Heel player. The reins of the team were turned over to Roy Williams who left Kansas to return to his alma mater.

In mentioning Kansas we could make the same statement about Roy Williams. Bet you didn’t know there have been only four coaches at Kansas since Wilt Chamberlain?
Chamberlain departed after the 1957-58 season, the count Dick Harp, Ted Owens Roy Williams and current Coach Bill Self. We could also state there’s been little turnover at Kentucky since legendary Adolph Rupp stepped down in 1972. John Calipari is coach number six since the Rupp retirement. We might include Louisville’s Rick Pitino in our count as well. Pitino’s been the head coach at Louisville since 2001-02 that season he replaced Denny Crum on the job since 1971-72. It should be of note Louisville is the only school to have won an NAIA and NCAA Championship. Who replaces this group of coaches when they chose to step aside? I have no idea of who but I know for sure there will be a national search for replacements.

Did you hear?
Kristaps Porzingis Knicks 2015 number one draft pick has been busy preparing himself for the upcoming NBA season. He’s been a regular in the weight room and it’s reported he’s gained about 11 pounds this summer which places him in the 230-235 pound weight range. He still remains undersized for someone 7 feet 2 inches tall and according to reports continuing to grow in height. For his sake hopefully the reported weight gain is muscle rather than fat.

We realize Porzingis needs additional bulk to under go the rigors of the NBA. 76er Jahilil Okafor or Laker D’Angelo Russell will be selected rookie of the year or someone else. If Porzingis is rookie of the year or just has a decent year I can hear Stephen A. Smith backpedaling. Immediately after the draft and continuing for weeks it seemed his voice was the sharpest and loudest critic of the Knicks and particularly Phil Jackson. You think he’d be willing to admit he might have been wrong about Porzingis?

Decisions, decisions
The latest “reported” news if accurate is quite interesting. It was last spring or summer stories circulated Mikhail Prokhorov was seeking potential buyers for the Nets. Bruce Ratner and others (?) own 22% of the Nets and 55% of Barclays Center. If this sale is completed Prokhorov would become single proprietor of the team and arena. According to Forbes the owners net worth is $9 billion dollars which says he’s likely to afford a buyout of his
partner(s).

Can he play?
The question is aimed squarely at new Laker Larry Nance Jr.; the 6-9 forward is the son of former Suns forward Larry Nance Sr. Nance Jr. has overcome several health issues to become the 27th pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. You name the health issue; Nance Jr. has dealt with a number of them. He suffers from Crohn's Disease a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects the lining of the digestive tract. A person suffering from Crohn’s is never cured with medication the disease can become stable.

In 2014 Nance Jr. tore his right ACL and last February dealt with a bout of mononucleosis. Despite these health issues time after time he returned to the basketball court. As a 5-11 point guard in high school he would grow to 6-7 by his senior year of high school. Technically a power forward hopefully the point guard skills haven’t left him, I’m looking forward to see him in action this season.

One more purchase---maybe
I haven’t mentioned my “Laker Man Cave” for awhile, a number of you might remember the issue. I had a room size issue or lack what I believe is adequate space to fully develop the room to its max. I might add there was no intention on my part to build a Man Cave it actually began unintentionally. Several years during the period Shaquille O’Neal was on the team a friend knowing my allegiance to the Lakers purchased a number 34 jersey for me as a gift. I wore the jersey occasionally over the top of a tee-shirt but that was about it. Naturally after Shaq was traded the jersey languished in the back of my closet for several years. Three years ago I gained another jersey as an unexpected gift.

A group of co-workers purchased a Kobe Bryant number 24 jersey as a going away present for me. It was shortly after that point I began purchasing Laker jerseys, caps, photos, banners and plaques. As I mentioned at the beginning of this piece room size has prevented additions to the Laker shrine until now. I purchased a Magic Johnson number 32 jersey which is likely the last addition to my room. Hmmm, now that I think about it I don’t have a Kareem Abdul Jabbar or “Big Game” James Worthy jersey. I could maybe add a Byron Scott or AC Green jersey to my room too. There are no copyright issues so I plan on sharing photos with you one of these days.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Bits n Pieces

Most likely Kyrie Irving will not appear on a basketball court until January. No worry Cavs fans your team is good enough to “coast” until he’s able to return. That’s not even half-way through the season that should provide Irving adequate time to regain his game.

I’m sure many question why the Shaq-Kobe peace treaty after all these years. Read what you wish into their pod cast, two extremely talented players who didn’t always see eye to eye when teammates. Charles Barkley said the two could have won a significant number of championships besides three. Who knows the situation might have become even worst and despite talent may have never won anything.

I wasn’t surprised were you; I’m referring to a recent CBS poll. The network conducted a poll of coaches to determine the best collegiate jobs. Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina and Kansas finished 1 through 4. If we check the all time won-loss records these four schools are the leaders. Over the course of time these schools have established a pattern of winning despite coaching and athletic department changes.

Kinda anxious to see my wife’s cousin in action this fall/winter. He’s a combo guard beginning his freshman year at a Division II school in Missouri. The school is less than three hours drive time from Kansas City so hopefully my schedule will allow attendance at more than one game.

What happened?
Bill Davidson died in 2009, in case the name might be unfamiliar to some of you I’ll explain. He was a business man and the former owner of the Pistons team he purchased in 1974. The team floundered on the court and the box office until they moved to the Pontiac Silverdome and later The Palace of Auburn Hills. Auburn Hills is where the Pistons first tasted success led by point guard Isiah Thomas the team had a permanent place in the NBA playoff. They would win their first championship in 1989 besting the Lakers in four straight games. It was reported Davidson was so pleased he promised Thomas a position in the Pistons organization when his playing days were over. An injury would force Thomas to retire in 1994 and though Thomas had been made a promise by the owner it never materialized.

How about former adversaries of Thomas, how did they turn out? The Lakers Magic Johnson would own a portion of the team for years until he sold it in order to purchase the baseball Dodgers. Larry Bird might have been made the same type of offer by the Celtics; it appeared he preferred a return to his Indiana roots. Bird’s worked for the Pacers in a number of capacities since his retirement. Despite leading the Bulls to six championships ownership of the Bulls would not occur for Michael Jordan. It would come first as a partial owner of the Wizards, later he would purchase the Bobcats (Hornets now). As for Thomas he’s had a succession of basketball positions since his retirement. The phone call from Davidson never came and with Davidson’s death a new owner is in place. So far there appears no effort by the current owner to involve Thomas in any capacity with the Pistons. Don’t take this as an indictment against the former Piston standout just plain curiosity on our part regarding developments.

NBA Champion
Quick off the top of your head which player has won the most championships since the 1980‘s? Time’s up----- if you said Michael Jordan with six championship rings you are incorrect it‘s actually Robert Horry. Because Horry played a reserve role for much of his NBA career he’s often forgotten the count begins. He won two championships while a member of the Rockets. The Rockets would eventually trade Horry to the Suns and he would later be traded again this time to the Lakers. Although playing a reserve role Horry was still a vital contributor to three championships the Lakers would win. Horry would become a free agent and in 2003 and signed with the Spurs. Horry won two more championships while playing for the Spurs a total of seven championships.

The biggest shot Horry took as a Laker was magical, his 2002 basket is burned in the memory banks of Laker fans. The Kings were leading in game four 99-97. There was 11.8 seconds remaining in the game when Kobe Bryant missed a lay-up, Shaq attempted a tip-in also a miss. Kings center Vlade Divac rather than grabbing the missed shot slapped the ball behind him toward the backcourt where Horry was standing behind the 3-point line. With little time on the clock Horry swished a 3-point basket Lakers 100 Kings 99. Horry may have been one of the greatest clutch shooter in NBA history. In 2008 he retired after a 16 year NBA career and today works as an analyst for Time Warner Cable SportsNet.

My Bad

I’m guilty of the same offense as Rockets center Dwight Howard, Wednesday I wrote of my objection Howard indicated his teammate James Harden was the best lefty ever in the game. I wrote of legendary Celtic great Bill Russell winner of 11 NBA Championships and a lefty. I forgot a lefty of more recent vintage, “The Admiral” David Robinson. The former Annapolis graduate and navy officer was required to fulfill his military commitment before beginning his NBA career. By the way Robinson stood 6-6 when he entered the academy the maximum height for a midshipman.

I’m sure the navy had no idea Robinson would grow to 7-1 by his senior year, even fewer might have foreseen the NBA in his future. His NBA career a regular season MVP, 2X NBA Champion is just a few of many honors. Robinson’s scored at a 21.1 ppg clip and grabbed 10.6 rebounds while a member of the Spurs. Despite beginning his NBA two years later than his graduating class his managed to play from 1989-2003. Did I mention David Robinson was also left-handed? I’m not going to take a chance this time I hope I haven’t omitted other successful lefties in NBA history.

Winning
Frank Jackson and Jabari Parker now with the NBA Bucks share several life moments. Both emerged from high school as highly talented basketball players Jackson from Utah and Parker from Illinois, both are/were 5-star prospects in high school. They share Mormonism a religion very few black families embrace. Brigham Young University in Utah is a Mormon affiliated institution, Parker was “supposed” to be headed to BYU. We know the history he enrolled at Duke leaving after his freshman year for the NBA.  6-4 Frank Jackson is from Highland Utah, reports indicate this youngster is skilled enough to play both guard positions. Jackson committed to BYU and then

de-committed while he searched for a school. He’s finally come to a decision; Jackson will head east for the campus at Durham (NC) to play basketball for Coach K. It should also be mentioned after losing a host of players to the NBA Duke has reloaded. ESPNU rates Duke’s incoming class number one in the nation. It appears the “Big Boys” continue to win the recruiting wars.

Remembering the past
I repeat a statement from previous I must be the last angry man in America. I tire of today’s media completely trashing records and exploits of past teams and individuals. A part of this has to do with now, “I can only see what’s in front of me. No disrespect to __________ (team/individual) but I believe _________ (team/individual) should be considered.” We didn’t witness giants of the past Shakespeare or Da Vinci toil in pursuit of excellence; do we disregard their greatness because we didn’t live at the time? In the NBA we have two legends playing for different teams who are legacy connected. LeBron James has switched back to jersey 23 since his return to Cleveland. You remember he changed to jersey 6 on his arrival in South Beach. He did it with the announcement; “In honor of Michael Jordan (23) the number should be retired.”

LeBron failed to take into consideration the great Bill Russell wore number 6 in those 11 NBA Championships in his 13 year Celtic career.  The NBA logo is the outline of former Laker great Jerry West who played from 1960 to 1974. Despite a brilliant playing career that saw him a 14X All Star he managed to win only won one NBA Championship. His Laker team was matched against Bill Russell’s Celtic team each and every time. In a discussion on Michael Jordan/LeBron James Stephen A. Smith said he believed Jordan should replace West as the NBA Logo.  Smith decided this and I quote; “West lost numerous NBA Championships” without discussing the fact each loss was his team facing the Russell led Celtics. Neither LeBron nor Smith were incorrect they were only viewing issues without bothering to research. I believe given time and research they may have come to an entirely different conclusion.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Mount Mutomobo
Dikembe Mutomobo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacque Wamutombo is his full name.  In his nearly 20-year NBA career he came to be known as Mount Mutombo, he was never much of an offensive threat (9.8 ppg).  Playing defense was his forte especially the art of shot blocking.  Many opposing player would drive the lane and have their shot swatted away Mutomobo would extend his right hand waving one finger as if to say; “Not in my house.”  Eventually the NBA outlawed his finger waving stating he was taunting opposing players.  The majority of his NBA career was spent with two teams the Nuggets and Hawks.  The  Hawks recently announced his jersey number 55 will be retired in November.

I overlooked him
Monday I wrote of the dysfunctional Kings and omitted Rajon Rondo, remember former Celtic and Mav Rondo?   He failed to run the plays Coach Rick Carlisle had drawn up thus wearing out his welcome in Big D.  We have owner Vivek Ranadive, Boogie Cousins, Coach George Karl and Rondo.  Added to this cast of characters is free-agent and former Ole Miss bad boy Marshall Henderson.  What’s not to like about this gathering?

Oh really
There is no requirement to live in the past, at the same time we must remember and reflect on the past before opening our mouths.  Rockets center Dwight Howard took to Twitter on Monday, he declared; “James Harden is the best left-handed player of all time.”  No argument from me Harden is certainly a very talented athlete however I have a question for Howard.

Celtic legend Bill Russell has 5 championship rings he could sport on his right hand and 6 on his left hand his shooting hand?  We know Russell was never the focus of Celtic offense but he was left-handed and he did win 11 championships.  Doesn’t this fact deserve consideration by Howard?  I’ve concluded most of us are products of the present age; it’s difficult for us to envision basketball played at anytime but the here and now.

His average with a 3-point line
A 30-second shot clock in college ball will be implemented for the upcoming season.  The change in the shot clock hopefully will increase scoring but will it?  That we must wait to see my first thought was “I wondered about Pete Maravich with the benefit of a 3-point basket and shot clock.”  Maravich did have advantages that aided his shooting at the time; the first may have been the time period he played (1967-1970).  In addition he played for Press Maravich his dad at LSU.  I’m unsure of this but Pete might have been one of the first high profile athletes to have his father as his college coach.

For youngsters Maravich freshman numbers didn’t count in his totals because in those days freshman were ineligible, For these purposes all four years are provided; he scored 43.6 as a freshman.  Look at these scoring numbers during his remaining years, 43.8, 44.2 and 44.5.  We can debate his field goal percentage as the highest he shot from the floor was .452 in his freshman year.  The difference no shot was out of range for him, the unfortunate portion I haven’t read or heard of a method to calculate how many of his shots would have been 3 point baskets.

This is different
The Lakers announced they signed rookie Jonathan Holmes from Texas, this is different move on a number of levels.  The 6-9 small/power forward was listed as a second round choice in mock sites DraftExpress.com and NBADraft.net.  Despite being on the radar of NBA scouts Holmes didn’t hear his name announced in either round.  Holmes good quality summer league play was likely the basis for the Laker signing.  Surprise number one Holmes didn’t play for the Laker Summer League team it was the Celtics; secondly the Lakers signed him to a multi-year contract.

Signing Holmes for more than one-year must be an indication Laker management must see potential in the young man.  Another athlete who missed the 2015 draft is 6-4 guard Michael Frazier.  Frazier was also signed to a multi-year contract.  Late Monday evening the Lakers announced guard Marcelo Huertas had agreed to a one-year contract.  The 32-year old Brazilian has spent the last four years with FC Barcelona.  These moves could be strictly for training camp but on the other hand it’s possible the Laker brain trust has something in mind yet to be revealed.
