Basketball from a fans perspective
You believe this?
Remember the Boogie Cousins tweet draft night? After the Kings selected a player he tweeted; “Lord give me strength.” Cousins claim the tweet was not aimed at the Kings selection he says he was in a hot sculpting class and now he’s busted.
NIBL
The National Industrial Basketball League was founded in 1947 by those choosing another path. We discussed previously two leagues the National Basketball League and the Basketball Association of America merged to become the National Basketball Association. There were a number of NBL teams who chose not to merge and formed a new league which became the NIBL. The “Industrial” was included in the league name because corporations sponsored these teams. The league had five teams that first year among them the Akron (OH) Goodyear Wingfoots, Fort Wayne (IN) General Electrics and Peoria (IL) Cats.
Goodyear Rubber, General Electric and Caterpillar Tractor sponsored the aforementioned teams. The 1960-61 would witness the last season of the NIBL, many reasons chief among them, salaries rose significantly for NBA players. Keep in mind the NBA was in competition for the same players and salaries were the only method to compete. Two teams would leave in 1961 joining the American Basketball League the new league would fold after one and a half seasons. My hometown had a team in the league the Kansas City Kaycees played one season 1957-58. With a 2-28 record it’s easy to see why they only lasted that one year.
“small” Ball
The Warriors have specialized in “small-ball” over the past two seasons. Have they changed their mindset about this type of offense after losing the championship? First they draft 7 foot 244 pound Damian Jones from Vanderbilt. A day later they announced the signing of Mamdou Ndiaye the 7 foot 6 inch 300 pound giant from Senegal. The Warriors indicate Ndiaye was signed to play on their summer league team there is no guarantee he makes their roster.
This is an interesting move on several levels; the Warriors might be looking at possibly losing three free-agent centers on their present roster. This says to me despite the fact we feature an up-tempo free-flowing offense we still need big men. After the Cavs punished them perhaps the Warrior thought process has changed. In any event this is interesting news.
A dilemma
“Darlin’ you got to let me know
Should I stay or should I go?
if you say you are mine
I’’ be here till the end of time
So you got to let me know
should I stay or should I go?”
The opening line from the 1982 hit by the rock group The Clash; “Should I stay or Should I go” could easily be guard Jeremy Lin. Free-agent Lin has made it clear he wants to remain in Charlotte the Hornets don’t appear willing to re-sign the 27-year old. This appears to be a money issue only based on what is reported the Hornets indicate they can pay him. Can Lin play at the NBA level might be the larger question this is NBA team number five.
They have money
$65.8 million dollars is the reported amount the Lakers have available to spend on free-agents. Kobe Bryant and Roy Hibbert’s contract roll off the books according to reports. A number of potential high value free-agents could be attracted to the Laker brand. We can forget about Kevin Durant, LeBron James or Dwayne Wade heading for Southern California however there are other potential free-agents and not in any order.
DeMar DeRozen
Hassan Whiteside
Al Horford
Joakim Noah
Festus Ezeli
Where are they?
Buddy Hield was the 6th pick by the Pelicans and Taurean Prince was number 12 by the Jazz (rights traded to the Hawks). They fit a rather unique profile both were seniors a rather rare commodity more and more in the NBA Draft. If we exclude international players there were only 15 seniors drafted from a list of 60 players. Even worst I’ve read reports “X will be 24 years old before the season starts” and NBA teams indicate a reluctance to draft an “old-timer.” The growth of the international game has been a contributing factor to fewer seniors being drafted.
No more super teams anymore because the best players leave school early. Kentucky’s freshman team of 2015 might come nearest to being a super team losing in the semi-finals finishing 38-1. The risk of injury haunts outstanding players and they leave. I remember several years ago Colorado had an outstanding player his name popped up on several mock sites. He sustained an injury missed his junior year and returned as a senior a shadow of his former self. Mizzou also had a player who suffered a serious injury he too returned but was never able to return to his previous form.

As
I heard it
New
Laker center Ivica Zubac is from Croatia and I found his name difficult to
pronounce. I listened to his interview with Laker broadcaster Mike Trudell,
went over it three or four times listening to him pronounce Zubac’s name. I
still got it wrong according to Wikipedia his name Ivica Zubac phonetically
is “e-Vit-za
Zu-buts”.
Superstar?
I
just don’t know about Russell Westbrook, I have no doubt of his talent I have
difficulty raising him above star level. In other words he‘s no superstar in my
book, in addition this is written prior to the series conclusion with the
Warriors. Through five games the Thunder point guard has averaged 28 points in
37 minutes of action with an average of 11 assists along with 4 steals and
nearly 7 rebounds.
That's the good Westbrook, how about the bad Westbrook? The bad Westbrook shot 41% from the floor and had nearly five turnovers a game with a high of 7 in Game Five. We have no method of calculating the number of points the Warriors were able to score from the sometimes poor shooting and turnovers Westbrook had.
Looking over his shoulder
Is
Ricky Rubio skating on thin ice with the Wolves? All indications point to him
being a good teammate and an above average point guard. The problem Rubio can’t
throw the ball in the ocean. It was clear his shooting skills were limited when
he arrived in the NBA the belief his shooting would improve. Rubio is in his
5th year and in a manner of speaking a throwback point guard. A greater premium
is placed on distributing the ball rather than shooting. As for the shooting
Rubio’s shot has clearly not gotten any better.
Rubio reached a high of .381 two years ago, this past season it was .374. In the 2016 draft the Wolves chose Kris Dunn from Providence, Dunn is a point guard. Dunn can distribute the ball (6.2) and score (16.4) with a healthy shooting percentage .448. Of course these are Dunn’s college numbers he is yet to prove he can reproduce these numbers at the NBA level. The question “Is Rubio looking over his shoulder?” It’s not him its Wolves management and the belief they can raise the level of play if Dunn were the point guard.
Who
starts these tales?
The only reason I’m reporting this story because it’s likely to occur
again at some date in the future. Believe it or not this is not the first time
I’ve heard this story not about this player but another. Draft night story the
Bucks Thon Maker was more than 19 years of age. First of all if he proves he
can play what does it matter if he’s 19, 20 or 25? My concern (and I can’t do
anything about it) are stories which are totally untrue. What satisfaction do
you receive circulating a story you know is untrue? I guess it’s like the NBA
trolls who are always claiming; “Nobody is watching the
NBA.”
Okay
trade him!!!
Lakernation a fan website claims “The Lakers have received offers for
Brandon Ingram.” Not surprising considering the potential of an Ingram. As
excited as this Laker fan is with the pick I say; “Okay trade him.” One aspect
to consider the Lakers should receive an outstanding veteran player(s) in
return. Who is that player(s) you might ask? I have no idea however this is my
criteria, a veteran starter possibly a center a veteran substitute and a draft
choice. The Lakers could also include one of their youngsters in the package to
make it more enticing, just my thoughts.
Job
opportunities
The
recent hires in the NBA the season will begin with eight black head coaches
(26%) out of 30 teams. Let’s check out the other major sports, in the NFL there
are five black head coaches (16%) out of 32 teams. The sport of Jackie Robinson
baseball has an even worst record out of 30 MLB teams there is one (1) (3%)
black manager. As for the colleges about 25% of the Division I coaches in
basketball are black, college football the number is 12.5%. In order to
increase minority hiring the NFL adopted the Rooney Rule.
If you are not familiar with the rule it states every time a head coaching position opens an NFL team must interview a minority person. It doesn’t set up a quota system it simply states equal opportunity. One website suggested the NCAA adopt a “Rooney Rule” too. Not possible in my view, NFL owners are beholding to other owners and the league to enforce the rule. The only connection Rutgers has with Gonzaga is both are members of the NCAA. We are dependent on schools doing the right thing i.e. interviewing all candidates rather than utilizing the “good old boy network.”

Notes from the draft
The world was sure Ben Simmons and Brandon Ingram would be at the top of the draft. Who would be drafted was not established until early in the week when the 76ers announced Simmons as their choice. The consolation prize would become Ingram from the second pick on the remainder of the draft would be a mystery. The players were not a mystery just where they might be picked. The Celtics chose Dragan Bender in the “Kristaps Porzingis” position the fourth pick.
Host Jay Bilas said; “Jakob Poeltil is the best Austrian import since the Von Trapp family.” Hint the movie Sound of Music look it up. The Bucks shocked everyone making Thon Maker the 10th pick in the first round. Most mocks had Maker a late first or early second round choice. Buddy Hield asked what he was going to do; “Put money in church and buy mom a house.” The fifth pick guard Kris Dunn of Providence joins his teammate and cousin Karl-AnthonyTowns with the Wolves. The Lakers surprised me with their second round pick. 7-1 265 pound center Ivica Zubac from Croatia was the choice, I have no information on the 19-year old. As I uncover a player profile it will be passed on.
He gets the big bucks
Several of you might be upset reading last weeks Words eye view; I had a laugh on Stephen A. Smith and his “accurate” forecasting. You remember the story Smith was 0-6 in picking an NBA champion. He just keeps on moving with no acknowledgment he’s incorrect. I believe it might work better for the reporter if he just quit trying to predict the outcome of sports events. By the way he also predicted the Mets would beat the Royals in last seasons World Series. He’s not any better at forecasting baseball as he is basketball the difference he claims to know basketball.
One and done
It’s now 10-years since the NBA implemented a policy mandating high school players were no longer eligible for the draft. A player must be one-year removed from high school graduation and 19-years old. ESPN’s Jay Bilas did excellent discussing the issue (see his interview), there is only one point I can add to his commentary. During one portion he said; “If a school doesn’t want one and done players don’t recruit them” which is easier said than done. I cannot verify this account but I read Tubby Smith was “asked” to leave Kentucky. His teams never won less than 22 games in his 10-years however it was reported Smith refused to recruit players he believed were one and done.
Pioneer
I wrote of Earl Lloyd awhile back, it might be important for new readers to become familiar with this pioneer of the game. The late Earl Lloyd died in February 2015 at the age of 86. He was as important to the NBA as Jackie Robinson was to Major League Baseball. Although he along with two others would become the first black players in the NBA Lloyd was actually the first. It was strictly a coincidence Lloyd would play the first game. The Washington Capitols had a game scheduled prior to Chuck Cooper, Nathaniel Clifton and Hank DeZonie taking the floor.
October 31, 1950 Lloyd’s made his debut against the Rochester Royals. The Capitols franchise would fold and Lloyd was drafted into the U.S. Army. The Syracuse Nationals (today’s 76er franchise) would pick up Lloyd after he left military service. He concluded his career as a member of the Detroit Pistons in 1960. Lloyd was Piston head coach in the 1971-72 season. In 2003 Lloyd was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame.

This "Rose" might bloom in New York
We knew things were not well in the Windy City, center Joakin Noah and power forward Pau Gasol are both likely to leave in free-agency. They cannot make a move until July 1 so they remain members of the team however Derrick Rose is own his way out of town. Rose the face of the franchise, Rose Chicago born and raised has been traded. The Knicks acquired the fragile Rose along with guard Justin Holiday and a 2017 2nd round pick. New Bulls are center Robin Lopez and guards Jose Calderon and Jerian Grant. According to reports Rose has signed off on the trade this one will require time to fully access.
We are a now people
The media once again goes overboard (in my view) regarding LeBron James. This is not a slap at LeBron James however there are players with far more championships we tend to forget. A number of NBA players of the past are nowhere near LeBron James in talent and skill however they won more. Was it luck or just being with the right team at the right time? Leading the way Bill Russell with 11 championships while a member of the Celtics. Four other Celtics have won 8 championships, two others 7. Robert Horry shares space with them having won 7 rings with three teams (Rockets, Lakers and Spurs). Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen won 6 as members of the Bulls, 13 players have won 5 championships including Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan. 12 players have won 4 including Shaq and Tony Parker, LeBron's total is 3 with last Sunday's win.
Bits n Pieces
The NBA returns to Kansas City however its only for an exhibition game. The Heat will face the Wolves in the Sprint Center on October 8. I'm really curious we have no NHL or NBA and both have exhibition games scheduled I'm wondering which game draws the most fans. I will keep you posted.
This is not intended to be a declaration of talent or potential. An NBA scout claims Dragan Bender's game is further along than Kristaps Porzingis this time last season. Do the Celtics draft the 7-foot power forward from Bosnia Herzegovina if he's available? We continue to hear the name of Kris Dunn or Buddy Hield both guards.
Montverde Academy in Montverde Florida might be viewed as a "basketball factory" but that's only part of the story. It's true the school has sent a number of high profile basketball players to schools throughout the nation. The school was founded in 1912 so it just didn't pop up in a manner of others. Montverde places emphasis on the academic side a Pre-K through grade 12. The school's sent Ben Simmons and D'Angelo Russell to the NBA with stops at LSU and Ohio State first.
We know this to be a fact the second round ot the NBA draft is no indication of talent. We need look no further than Draymon Green of the Warriors, he was the 35th pick in the second round of the 2012 draft. Names like Austin Rivers, Fab Melo and Royce White were all chosen ahead of Green. Consider this bit of information Melo and White are no longer in the NBA from just four years ago.
"Check back with me in April"
No one doubts Josh Jackson's talent, the 6-7 guard/small forward was the number one prospect in the Class of 2016. It was quite a coup Kansas snatching this talent from the likes of Michigan State, Arizona and others. He's arrived on campus and his first interview I found amusing. He was questioned how long he intended to remain at Kansas.
"A lot of people would say I'm a one-and-done player, but I don't really view myself that way. I think I will be here (Kansas) as long as I need to be, until I feel I'm ready to take that next step." Jackson responded to the question in a very diplomatic manner and I applaud him for that. As for me I think the headline is appropriate, no promise he's staying but no guarantee he's gone after the first year.

I don’t laugh at mistakes by others however there are exceptions
With some subjects there are exceptions and this is one. I wouldn’t point this out if Stephen A. Smith wasn’t so doggone bombastic and loud, he leaves a little to be desired in the forecasting department. Somebody searched the net and check this out Smith INCORRECTLY picked the wrong NBA team to win the championship six years in a row. Don’t take my word check out the video for yourself.
Did you hear this?
This is hardly shocking news however it’s reported anyway. Ben Simmons has indicated the 76ers have informed him he will be their choice on Thursday. If that’s the case and the Lakers don’t pull any unusual moves Duke’s Brandon Ingram will be their pick. Everything I read about Ingram indicates he’s a talent, will he be a star is yet to be determined. His weight issue is really not an issue; I hate to do this make comparison because he’s not this player. Kevin Durant was the same height (6-10) but weighed 220 to Ingram’s reported 196. In time Ingram will gain however he might never come close to 240 pounds Durant’s present weight.
Hubie
His full name is Hubert Jude Brown but we know him as “Hubie.” To this generation of fans they only know the broadcast Hubie they might not realize his coaching resume. Sometimes it’s hard to believe this guy is 82-years old because he’s sharp in dissecting the game of basketball. From 1972-1974 Brown was an assistant with the Bucks he would serve as head coach with the ABA Kentucky Colonels until the merger in 1976.
Brown would later coach the NBA Hawks and Knicks before moving into the broadcast arena. The Grizzlies twisted his arm and he returned to coaching from 2002-2005 until health injuries forced him to the sideline. Brown’s lifetime connection to basketball allows him insight lacking in most of us. I believe him to be insightful and quite informative. He doesn’t overload you with non-basketball commentary like Jeff Van Gundy does on occasion.
The countdown
On Tuesday before Thursday’s draft the second round is of interest, we are “sure” who is picked number one or two. The name Diamond Stone has popped up as the Lakers second round choice, I’ve never seen him play although his size and stats look satisfactory. He’s 6-10 (or 11 depending on your source) and checks in at a hefty 255 pounds. His scoring was only average at Maryland (12.5 ppg) and rebounds 5.4 however in today’s NBA those numbers could be increased.
The one glaring weakness might be maturity and you might ask will that factor hold him back? It could but could you also say Boogie Cousins rapidly? He’s not considered an elite athlete however is it necessary to be number one to play center in the NBA? I’m not sure if the Lakers chose him or somebody else however the P.A. announcer at Staples might say this. Here’s the starting lineup for your Los Angeles Lakers; at center 6-11 Diamond Stone.
Biting words
“We’ve crushed them on the basketball court, and we’re going to for years because of the way we’ve built this team. Lacob told Bruce Schoefield of the New York Times. We’re light-years ahead of probably every team in structure, in planning, in how we are going to go about things.” I’d mentioned this interview previously; this is Joe Lacob Warriors owner being interviewed in early April. At that point can we state with conviction his team was about to climb to the mountains peak. Unfortunately teams must play until a champion is crowned. Could we say these words might have come back and bit Joe Lacob in the butt.

Did you know?
Reports indicate more than 30.8 million souls watched Game Seven of the NBA Championship. *“It was ABC’s highest rated broadcast ever and the most watched NBA Game since the 1998 Finals, when Michael Jordan clinched his last title.” What does that say about the NBA and the future? Regular season viewing numbers might be called into question but not the playoffs.
Once the playoffs begin fans whether they are diehard or casual are tuned in. Next time you hear someone state “Nobody is watching the NBA” you have my permission to slap them up side their head. Records indicate ABC has broadcast seven Super Bowls and eight World Series in its history and the NBA top them all. Keep in mind this is ABC alone, I didn’t research NBC, CBS or Fox numbers.
*Variety. COM
Mexico
Not the country but the city is located about 180 miles east of Kansas City (MO). This city of 11,000 souls heard Cavs Coach Tyronn Lue give a shout-out to his hometown Sunday evening after winning the NBA Championship. Lue is from Mexico although he would later move to Raytown a metro Kansas City high school. Lue was one of the best high school players the area produced. I think it’s okay if Mexico and Kansas City share in Lue’s success.
An NBA Championship as a rookie coach is exclusive territory. Research indicates the first to accomplish the feat might have been Paul Westhead an assistant with the Lakers, he moved over the head chair after Jack McKinney suffered an injury forcing him to the sidelines for the season. Westhead coached the team for 68 games leading them to the NBA Championship in 1980 Magic Johnson‘s rookie year. Westhead would be fired early in the 1981-82 season and be replaced by Pat Riley, he would coach the Lakers to the 1982 NBA Championship over the 76ers.
Double triumph
In 1950 City College of New York accomplished a feat which will never occur again. Their accomplishment on the basketball court has been overshadowed by a point shaving scandal involving the school and several others. 1950 was a different era the NIT Tournament had a much larger image in the public eye than the NCAA Tournament. In any event CCNY competed in the 1950 NIT at 12-team tournament; they would beat Bradley University 69-61 on March 18 winning the NIT. CCNY would then enter the NCAA later and beat that same Bradley team for the NCAA Championship on March 28.
Gambling interests had contacted a number of players paying them money to affect the outcome of games. Although the scandal affected the entire team history states only three players were actually arrested and admitted guilt. Only one CCNY player actually spent anytime incarcerated and that was due to a juvenile record, he would spend six months in Rikers Island. Most of the former players went on to lives outside of basketball most have since died. After the scandal the school de-emphasized its sports program and began play at the Division III level. Despite the scandal the record books never removed CCNY as the 1950 NIT and 1950 NCAA Champion.
On second thought
MVP LeBron James might have missed Kyrie Irving more than Kevin Love; I speak of the 2015 NBA Championship. You remember both Irving and Love were missing in action last season due to injury. Both were healthy this time around but Irving proved far more valuable to the championship than Love. In the recovery from a 3-1 deficit Irving scored 41, 23 and 26 points and registered a key 3-point basket late in Game Seven. Irving gave Steph Curry all-kinds of problems attempting to guard him. Back to Love for a moment the Cavs got far more production out of Tristan Thompson than Love what does that say about his value to the team?
As for Warriors owner Joe Lacob I’d simply state don’t pat yourself on the back too soon. Winning consecutively especially in the NBA is not an easy task. Your Warriors set a modern won-loss record but fell short in the playoffs after holding a lead. In April you stated your team had the answers I have a question for you. Mr. Lacob can you maintain this nucleus of talent through free-agency and injuries? Finally didn’t Klay Thompson state a while back his Warriors “were better than the Showtime Lakers?” BAM that was the microphone I just dropped on the floor. On June 2nd Mr. Stephen A. Smith of ESPN predicted the Warriors would win in seven games at least he got the seven correct.

Game Seven
I made a comparison between a heavyweight championship boxing match regarding Game Six I was wrong. Game Seven was actually a match for the ages as both teams slugged it out for the championship. What an exciting finish as the Cavs won 93-89. Two weeks or so ago I predicted a Cavs victory, as the Warriors raced out to a 3 games to 1 lead I thought “well I missed this one big time. I also stated you could laugh at me if I was proven wrong.” To come back from a 3-1 deficit says much about LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and the balance of the Cavs. Check the Wall Street Journal April 6, Warriors owner Joe Lacob indicated the Warriors were "set for the future." I wonder if he regrets pronouncing his team champions now and into the future?
On second thought
I intended to leave Ayesha Curry’s comment alone however I decided in favor of offering my response. Steph’s wife is entitled to her opinion regarding the manner Game Six was officiated. She stepped over the line by sending out a tweet indicating “the game was fixed and the NBA must have a financial reason for extending the series to seven games.” From what I’ve read (and believe) the NBA has been “paid” up front no matter if it’s a four game sweep or seven game series. Conspiracy theorists have long picked, poked and dissected all aspects of the NBA in an attempt to find something wrong. I never hear or read of the Super Bowl or World Series being fixed. Historically check out the “Black Sox” World Series when you have time.
Patrick Ewing bent card, Cavs consecutive number one lottery picks (2013, 2014), referee Tim Donaghy forced to resign due to gambling. We could uncover even more conspiracies if we continue to research. I can agree with Ayesha several of the fouls called on her husband were certainly questionable. At the same time Curry had at least two “dumb” fouls it was clear he’d committed. In closing consider this account; you and wife are employed by the same company. Your wife is terminated and she calls the local news and television stations. The story is told about how unfair ABC Corporation is to its employees. In the mean time you are still employed by ABC and must return to work daily. Unless you had issues its likely you retain your job but would you might feel comfortable every morning when arriving. Think about it.
A rare occurrence
If you watched Game Six you witnessed a rare occurrence, I’m not referring to the Cavs winning and tying the series. I’m actually referencing the appearance of Craig Sager as a sideline reporter. Sager has worked for Turner Sports over the years covering the NBA. He would become
well-known for his colorful suits as his sideline reporting. In March it was announced Sager’s leukemia had returned and doctors gave him at most six months to live without receiving treatment. Although Sager has worked for other networks over the years he’s never worked an NBA final. ABC/ESPN allowed Sager to work the sidelines for the game.

All kinds of stories are circulating on the 76ers choice, if Philly does something “strange” who will the Lakers pick? Recently a fan website indicated the team was focused on Brandon Ingram if they had won the top choice. So what occurs, the 76ers pick Kris Dunn from Providence or Buddy Hield of Oklahoma the Lakers chose_________.
If you’re new
You might be a new to Words eye view and maybe noticed an inordinate amount of Laker stories. If you read the About Me on the side of the page you realize although I have always lived in Kansas City (MO) I’ve been a long-time Laker fan. I attempt to cover all aspects of basketball middle school, high school, college and the NBA. My hope is to eventually include reports on Euro basketball other than NBA prospects. I bleed purple and gold so the Lakers will forever be my NBA team despite the recent history.

Game Six
After sleep-walking through the first half of the game the Warriors woke up. Poor shooting and poor defense by the Warriors allowed the Cavs to gain a 20-point lead in the second quarter; the lead would slip to 16 at the half Cavs 59 Warriors 43. With 7:43 left in the fourth quarter the Cavs established an 11-point lead. The Cavs received most of their production from Irving and LeBron as expected
Tristan Thompson’s double-double aided the Cavs to maintain a double-digit lead.
Interesting at one point in this series the Cavs appeared “dead in the water” now it’s the Warriors. After holding 3 games to 1 lead the Warriors have now allowed the Cavs to climb back into the series. Final score would read Cavs 115 Warriors 101 see you on Sunday from Oakland.
Unbelievable
I have long maintained the internet plus social networks bring out the worst in some people, in this story a person lost his job. Steph Curry’s sister sent out a tweet indicating she was headed to Cleveland for Game Three. Sydel Curry received a homophobic and vulgar response to her tweet. Tweets went back and forth between the two until Sydel blocked the user. Twitter having the contact information alerted the individual’s employer and the author of the homophobic and vulgar tweet no longer has a job---he was fired. In addition the company of the former employer is reported to have written a letter of apology to the Curry family.
Let’s suppose
The Lakers are unable to sign Joakim Noah, Hassan Whiteside or someone else to play center I have a back-up plan. I might stress this is not the Lakers plan however it’s Larry Laker’s strategy. There are three centers that might last until the second round and the Lakers could consider these are not in any order just as I see them. Leading off would be A.J. Hammons from Purdue whom I’d covered previously. Hammons is 7-feet and weighs 250 pounds hefty enough to handle the center position in the NBA.
Next up is 7-2 Zhou Qi from China also on the list of prospects. Qi has limitations his weight (215) but also limited play against top notch competition. We could add 6-11 255 pound Diamond Stone of Maryland to the list too. I’m not stating any of the three is NBA ready however this could be the same plan proposed for Thon Maker. The only point I’m unsure if it might be better to play in Europe versus the NBA D-League. They could return in one or two years prepared for the rigors of NBA play.
Bits n Pieces
I discovered information regarding Ben Simmons and Brandon Ingram to share prior to the draft next week. Both are 6-10 although Simmons weighs a hefty 240 pounds and Ingram a skinny 196. Wingspan for Simmons is 7 feet while Ingram its 7 feet 3 inches. Note Ingram’s wingspan is the same as the 7-1 Thon Maker.
I believe it’s necessary to clear the air now and then; a number might believe I’m at war with the media. Far from it, there are many whom I believe are competent and perform the task with great diligence. One of those individuals is ESPN’s Paul Biancardi who similar to Dick Vitale also once coached college basketball. I’ve found this former coach insightful and informative during telecast and studio programming.
I’ve changed my mind, I believed at one point there were issues between Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant. I continue to maintain Westbrook plays out of control at times I don’t judge them competing for leadership of the Thunder. The bigger question will Durant remain a teammate with free-agency beckoning later in the summer.
Coach Brett Brown is proudly stating Joel Embiid will be ready to play this upcoming season. I certainly don’t intend to hold my breath however you can say po-ten-tial. The one year he spent at Kansas left the NBA community salivating that’s why the 76ers made him their number one pick (number three overall) in 2014. www.sports-reference.com projected Embiid’s numbers over a 40 minute game while at Kansas. They were amazing, 19.0 ppp, 14.5 rebounds and 4.3 blocked shots.
You thought it was just me
I’ve believed for awhile he’d reached his ceiling and you believe I was hatin’. Kelvin Pelton ESPN.com believes as I do free-agent Rivers is likely to never provide the Clippers more than he’s exhibited to date. I cannot speak for Pelton however I don’t believe Rivers lacks talent it’s a value plus return issue for me. If a team is willing to make an offer for his services the Clippers should allow him to walk his value to the team is definitely inflated. On the other hand is it possible director of player personal Doc Rivers re-signs Rivers for Coach Doc Rivers team?

I could see it
A few weeks ago I checked NBADraft.net, at that point they state the mystery man Thon Maker would slide into the second round where the Lakers would choose him with the 32nd pick. Maker did not participate in any scrimmage matches at the draft combine so we have no idea how he matches against competition. As for his measurements they are dazzling. He did not weigh the 240 pounds or so David Aldridge mentioned in his column several weeks ago. Maker weighs somewhere between 215 and 220 pounds, he’s 6-11 without shoes and 7 feet in shoes with a 7-3 wingspan. Maker has a standing reach of 9-2 ½ inches with a 9 ½ inch hand width.
Allow me to speculate a moment, I could see the Lakers making this pick for several reasons. Let’s assume the scouting report and individual workout concludes he’s worth a second round pick. The Lakers (or some other team) drafts him and allows time to gain additional skill in the D-League or Europe. In two years he’d still be only 21 years old when he arrives in the NBA in the meantime he’s getting paid. This might be considered a “waste” pick but I don’t believe that to be the case. NOTE: The updated draft has changed and Maker is no longer shown as a Laker choice.
NBA draft
Next week we’ll discover the who’s who of the draft; the focus has been on the top two prospects. Ben Simmons of LSU and Duke’s Brandon Ingram have been the focus and for good reason. The 2014 and 2015 draft both were considered deep in potential talent. As the for 2016 draft the story is different however that’s a surface view. There are potentially hidden gems in any years draft. We knew the name Damian Lillard none of us believed the former Weber State athlete would be named Rookie of the Year in 2013.
Draymond Green has become the heart and soul of the Warriors. Green was the 35th pick in the second round of the 2012 draft. Just last year another unknown talent emerged from the 2015 draft. Kristaps Porzingis from Latvia was an unexpected pick however became a surprise talent for the Knicks. Kawhi Leonard drafted by Indiana but traded to the Spurs draft night is the future of that franchise. Although drafted in the first round he emerged from San Diego State to become a legitimate NBA star. Don’t change channels after the first two picks you might miss a talent being selected.
He said it
Draymond Green was suspended to ensure the championship series would continue. The Knicks had the advantage in 1985 of a bent card allowing them to win the lottery and later draft Patrick Ewing, in addition UFO’s exist and Justin Beiber will go down in musical history. Former referee Tim Donaghy has surfaced once again attempting to garner headlines. Donaghy originated the initial sentence in this paragraph “The NBA had the fix in to prolong the series that’s why Green was suspended.”
Hey Tim didn’t you resign in 2007 to avoid being fired by the NBA? Yes it was proven you bet on games in addition you made calls that affected the point spread and didn’t you spend time in prison for these offenses? With such a checkered past give us a valid reason we should believe you. In 1985 the Ewing card might have been bent, UFO’s could exist and a number of people love Justin Beiber. All are possible except believing anything Donaghy has to say.
Bahamas
We in the U.S. say Bahamas or The Bahamas; officially the nation is the Commonwealth of The Bahamas and a former British colony. This series of 700 islands is located east and south of Florida and the capital Nassau is about 162.14 nautical miles from Miami (FL). Despite the large number of islands there are less than 400,000 citizens in the country. One of its countrymen will hear Commissioner Silver announce his name next Thursday during the NBA Draft.
The name is Buddy Hield and he is a shooting guard from Oklahoma however Freeport Bahamas is home. On Thursday he’ll be a lottery pick and become only the fourth player from The Bahamas in the NBA. Laker broadcaster and former player Mychal Thompson grew up in Canada but was born in The Bahamas. This certainly is no predictor of future stardom for Hield however he will become one of the few Bahamian athletes in the NBA.

The “new” LeBron
On Friday I was highly critical of LeBron; my complaint never had anything to do with talent. There was never any question on talent the problem was deferring his game to teammates. I’m sure in youth basketball some coach is informing his team “To pass the basketball.” The game should be played on that basis however there are exceptions and it often appears LeBron is guilty of too much team play at times.
Monday evening I believe we saw a different LeBron, at one point announcer Mike Breen provided his point total but added; “He’s got no assists.” This was a clue LeBron was determined the series was not going to end at least on Monday. Emphasis on his offensive game allowed him to do what he do too i.e. distribute the basketball and rebound. 41 points 16 rebounds and 7 assist on .533 shooting from the floor.
A slight delay
Chinese prospect Zhou Qi is headed to the NBA but not immediately. It’s reported the 7-2 Qi will buy-out his contract with the Xinjiang Flying Tigers however there is a BUT with this update. Qi will be in the 2016 NBA Draft next week however the indication is will not report to the NBA team until 2017. Despite the delay in his arrival there remain benefits to this approach for the team drafting Qi. 1. Qi would have another season of competitive basketball under his belt. 2. There would be additional opportunity for Qi to bulk up his 218 pounds, he‘s rather slight. Qi needs to gain at least another 20 to 25 pounds which would better prepare him for the rigors of the NBA.
I’m with him
Are you a stat geek, if you answered yes then you can explain plus/minus in NBA box scores? Tuesday morning Dan Patrick and crew held a brief discussion on the subject of plus/minus in NBA box scores. Patrick informed his staff; “I don’t pay attention to that stuff.” I can agree plus/minus gives you no creditable information which makes sense.
This is an example from Game Five Klay Thompson scoring 37 points was awarded a -21, Kevin Love with 4 points and 3 rebounds was a +18. You’ve already read LeBron’s number above however it was 41, 16 and 7 and he finished with +13. Kyrie Irving scoring 41 points for the Cavs was +20. This is intended to be a measurement while the player is on the floor, as I stated at the beginning I agree with Patrick. Klay Thompson’s shooting kept the Warriors in the game was it his fault the entire Warrior defense fell apart?
Where is he now?
In the category of where is he now the name Andrew Bynum, you remember him don’t you? He was one of the last high school players to arrive in the NBA prior to the policy change; Bynum was made the 10th pick in the 2005 draft by the Lakers. The youngster had talent it was just a matter of time for the 7 foot 285 pound prodigy adjusted his game to the NBA. Bynum’s third year would be a break-out year for him, 13 points 10 rebounds and 2 blocks a game in 35 games 25 of which he was the starter. Bynum’s last year with the Lakers would be his best all around 18 points and 12 rebounds a game. By this time Mike Brown had replaced Phil Jackson, Bynum and Brown waged psychological warfare with one another all season long.
In August 2012 Bynum was traded to the 76ers and that’s when his career really headed south. He never played for Philadelphia although he remained on the roster. 2013 witnessed him signing with the Cavs less than a year later he was traded to the Bulls who would later waive him. February 2014 he signed with the Pacers but that would only result in him playing two games. He’s been out of the NBA since that time; in any event he was spotted in the stands during the Warriors-Cavs series blond hair and all. So much promise curtailed by injury and sometimes knuckleheaded attitude on his part. With all the “baggage” in his past he’s still only 28 years old but the NBA is likely in the rear-view mirror for this one time talent.

2. Basketball from a fans perspective
Published Monday through Friday
Game Five
The game was “Muhammad Ali versus Joe Frazier or George Foreman” a heavyweight championship bout. Back and forth in the first half as each team traded baskets no team pulling more than three points ahead of the other, halftime Cavs 61 Warriors 61. The Cavs have come out in the third quarter wanting a return home, as they raced out to a 10-point lead which was reduced to eight. With 1:08 left in the third period the Cavs have an 11 point lead which was reduced to 9.
End of the third quarter Cavs 93 Warriors 84 as Irving and LeBron lead the way. LeBron 36 points 12 rebounds and 6 assists, Irving 29 points end of the third. As for the Warriors Klay Thompson led the way as he kept his team in the game scoring 35 points. The Cavs dominated the fourth quarter led by James and Irving duo as for Love he was there but hardly a presence during the game. Final score Cavs 112 Warriors 97 as Irving and LeBron both scored 41 points.
McDonald All-Americans
Checking the incoming list of prospects for Mizzou I see no McDonald’s All-Americans. Of the five prospects four receive three stars and one 0 stars by Rivals. Does that pose serious problems for the upcoming season? I don’t believe any more than normal. A number of schools have been quite competitive every year without being considered “NBA factories.”
We could check out the victory by the 2016 NCAA Champion Villanova as an example. Gonzaga, Butler, Wichita State and Stephen F. Austin are just a few of the several successful programs without loads of McDonald’s All-Americans. It certainly aids the cause of any school to attract high profile athletes but it’s not always necessary to produce a winner, ask Mark Few (Gonzaga) or Gregg Marshall (Wichita State). One more noteworthy issue with the exception of Villanova all the schools mentioned are considered mid-major.
The NFL
Nate Robinson the 5-9 point guard is no longer in the NBA his 11-year career over. Robinson attended the University of Washington on a football scholarship before beginning play in the NBA. Robinson always expressed a desire to play in the NFL and he had a tryout with the NFL Seahawks. Can Robinson make the transition from the NBA to the NFL at age 32?
What you doing?
I didn’t violate my boycott I’m not viewing ESPN’s First Take. Unfortunately I cannot avoid Stephen A. Smith and his sometimes questionable commentary on the NBA page. The latest tirade; Smith’s upset with the NBA for suspending Draymond Green. Kiki VanDeWeghe NBA vice-president of basketball operations offered an explanation for the suspension. I’m not going to detail VanDeWeghe however agree with the leagues reasoning or not there was clarification.
The NBA made its decision regarding Green, Stephen A. Smith and nobody else has responsibility for player actions on and off the court. This is written prior to Game Five and I have no idea how this will affect the Warriors. Sometimes past issues result in future actions. *“This was Green’s fourth flagrant foul point, which resulted in the automatic suspension. He (Green) also has five technical’s and was fined $25,000 for kicking Oklahoma City’s Steven Adams in the groin during the Western Conference finals.”
*Kansas City Star
“No Excuse Just Produce”
40 years of Drew League basketball in the heart of the ghetto South Central Los Angeles. It’s beyond a doubt the most competitive summer league tournament in the nation. You better be prepared to defend your manhood if strive to play in the Drew, the game is strictly a man-eater you will be challenged. In addition to being challenged you just might be embarrassed too. There are referees however unless there is blood few fouls are called.
Streetballers along with college and NBA players dot the rosters of the Drew League. The tiny gym at Charles Drew Middle School at the corner of Compton and Firestone was packed to the rafters with fans wanting to witness the best summer league basketball in the nation. In 2012 the league moved to the King Drew Magnet High School located at 1601 E 120th Street Los Angeles. The theme rings just as true today as it did 40 years ago; “No Excuse Just Produce.”

Game Four
With eager anticipation we await start of Game Four for the NBA Championship. The 15 point victory (104-89) by the Warriors in Game One has been the closet to date. The second game the Warriors blew the Cavs out 110-77 and the next one witnessed the Cavs returning the favor 120-90. If you remember prior to the series I predicted a championship for long-suffering Cleveland fans, at this point I have no idea who wins. The game was pretty even much more (in my view) than the other three. The Cavs held an eight point lead at a stage but couldn’t maintain it.
Steph Curry had a breakout game scoring 35 points and fellow splash brother Klay Thompson chimed in with 25. Kyrie Irving with 38 led the way followed by LeBron with 25 points 13 rebounds and 9 assists. Final score Warriors 108 Cavs 97, the “Fat Lady” is certainly tuning up at this stage. I realize I echoed the same theme during the Warriors-Thunder series. The Warriors looked in the mirror and saw themselves being eliminated and said no way. The Splash Brothers win tonight and their second NBA Championship in a row.
“Hello boys, I’m back”
You remember the line uttered by Randy Quaid don’t you? In the 1996 Sci-Fi classic Quaid piloting a fighter jet was attacking an alien spacecraft. The aliens’ had abducted him years previously. I’m unsure if Dick Vitale can fly an F-18 or if he’s ever seen a UFO however he is back. A great number of folks won’t be too happy with this news. ESPN announced the 77-year old Dick Vitale signed a one-year contract with the network number. I read the story on one website and of the seven responses to the news four were negative in tone toward this news. It might appear Vitale’s broadcast history might be older than him however that’s not the case.
This former college and NBA coach was first heard on ESPN in 1979; this was to be a “temporary” job while Dickey V. wanted on coaching job to open. The four mentioned earlier and several others will be really upset with this portion of the story. “My goal is to be the first announcer ever to call a game and say you’re awesome baby at 100.” We guess he intends to work until he’s 100 years so Vitale haters just chill for now. I believe him to be a man of his word health permitting I could see him sitting behind a microphone referring to some freshman as a “diaper dandy” or one of his other phrases he’s identified with.
On second thought
I thought I would leave this matter alone but it smacked me in the face again. I’m referring to the comment by the Warriors Klay Thompson after the second game during the press conference he said; “Were better than the Showtime Lakers.” Let me be forthright the Warriors have won exactly one (1) NBA Championship, they may win a second this season. I wonder if Klay can count the number of championships Showtime won. Point guard Steph Curry would run Magic Johnson crazy with his shooting however I could see the 6-9 Magic taking the 6-3 Curry on the low block and shooting right over top of him. At the center position Andrew Bogut plays a valuable role for the Warriors but you gonna take him over the offense and defensive prowess of the “Sky-Hook”.
Klay you sayin’ Harrison Barnes is better at the small forward position than “Big Game” James Worthy, power forward Draymond Green offensively is a cut above Kurt Rambis or A.C. Green. Rebounding the basketball both are on the same level of Green. We now arrive at the shooting guard, Klay Thompson and Byron Scott would likely neutralize one another. The Laker bench contained lock-down defender Michael Cooper along with Klay’s dad 6-10 Mychal compared to Brandon Rush and Marresse Speights. The teams played in different eras and this is just one man’s opinion. Hey Warriors win two or three more championships and then come see me.
Bits n Pieces
As I stated earlier Celtic GM Danny Ainge tries to disguise his player moves which is certainly his prerogative. First it appeared he favored Oklahoma shooting guard Buddy Hield. Much later it was 7 foot Dragan Bender from Bosnia & Herzegovina. Just this week the Celtics had a quartet of tall guys in town for workouts. 7-6 Mamadou Ndiaye UC-Irvine, 7-1 Thon Maker Canada, 6-11 Shawn Long Louisiana-Lafayette and 6-11 Stefan Jankovic University of Hawaii. Barring a trade the Celtics have three choices in the first round and five in the second and opportunity to draft a starting five.
It seems at times a number of stories in Words revolve around big men. The reason is simple the game is generally for players 6-6 and taller. Kay Felder had an impressive season, 24.4 ppg 4 rebounds and 9.3 assists. He played for Oakland University not located in California but Michigan. Mid-major school and one other issue Felder is only 5 feet 9 inches tall both work against him. He’s hired an agent so he won’t be returning for his senior year will he be drafted might be the next question. On June 23 a partial answer will be provided Felder may or may not be drafted. It might work out for him better if he is able to secure a free-agent contract.
Paul Pierce indicates its 50-50 on the possibility he returns to the Clippers. Pierce will be 39-years old by the time the 2016-17 season begins. On a part-time basis he also suffered his worst shooting percentage in his career .363. 6.1 ppg, 1.0 assists and 2.7 rebounds a game for a future Hall of Fame candidate. A number of brilliant athletes play one or two years too many, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Kevin Garnett and Kobe Bryant---do we add Paul Pierce’s name to the group? The old adage “Father Time remains undefeated" continues to ring true.

Basketball from a fans perspective
“People don’t care where you were drafted. They just care whether you can play.” So was the statement made by Ben Simmons. Just a portion of his response to Chad Ford of ESPN.com. I don’t believe anybody could find fault with his statement nor the truth of it.
Help wanted--there are exceptions
I’ve mentioned on more than one occasion the Lakers need a center, you may have read either in Words or someplace else Dwight Howard wants out of Houston and is looking to “greener pastures.” Howard is supposed to have indicated there would be no problem for him to return to the Lakers. If the Lakers should sign free-agent Howard there is nothing I can do except complain. As much as I believe the team has a HELP WANTED sign in front Howard need not apply.
Don’t want to pile on
I believe we are in agreement regarding the basketball talent of LeBron James. We could make the same statement on his business ventures securing material comfort for his family. As for LeBron’s NBA legacy that might be called into question. Lebron’s led the Heat and Cavs teams to six straight NBA Championship series and is a two-time NBA Champion. It’s my belief despite LeBron’s exploits on the basketball court he appears to lack one key ingredient. He’s got no “killer” instinct, that ability that says; “I’m the best there is if you want to win you’ve got to get past me first.”
Michael Jordan had it so did Kobe Bryant, in an earlier era Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Bill Russell also exhibited it. There are others past and present however those names standout. That old sayin’ back in the ‘70’s “What you see is what you get” applies to LeBron James. Perhaps he’s giving us all he can, a very talented player but one who defers his game to teammates. The headline of this account says it all; it’s probably unfair for me to scrutinize his career to this point however this commentary is far nicer than some you will read in the future.
Interesting choice
6-9 180 pound Shareef O’Neal is a talent; in fact the son of Shaquille O’Neal is one of the top prospects in the Class of 2018. How does the young man improve he trains and continues to train. The youngster indicates Kobe Bryant contacted him and made an offer, he would train Shareef over the summer. If Shareef takes on the training regiment and mindset of Kobe he might not reach the NBA but he will be improved. Next time you hear Jason Whitlock or some other scribe make a derogatory statement about Kobe remember this account.

The New Mexico city in the title had little more than 11,000 hearty souls at the time Bill Bridges was born. In all likelihood he’s probably the only professional basketball player the city has ever produced. The late William C. “Bill” Bridges is a name from the past the Kansas faithful should be familiar with. This 6-6 228 pound forward was “Dennis Rodman” before Rodman was even born. Bridges was a furious rebound artist in both the American Basketball League and NBA.
In the 1961 draft the Chicago Packers (now Washington Wizards) drafted him, Bridges preferred the startup American Basketball League which only lasted one and half years. At the time the ABL folded he was snatched by the Hawks where he spent his most productive years. Bridges once grabbed 35 rebounds in an NBA playoff game, his 14-year pro career saw his numbers duplicated; 11.9 ppg and 11.9 rebounds. Last September he died at the age of 76 cancer related. Bill Bridges a giant of the game ahead of his team in many aspects, R.I.P.

Basketball from a fans perspective
Game Three
Fans a prior engagement kept me from viewing the game start to finish. Someplace in the first quarter the Cavs have a nearly 20 point lead. Maybe it was home cooking or just plain embarrassment. LeBron and company did a number on the Warriors and now this may, I repeat this may become a series. 52% shooting and cutting down on the number of turnovers certainly aided the Cavs effort. No Love, no matter Richard Jefferson started at small forward and LeBron moved over to the power forward slot. This seems to be a playoff series one team or the other knocks the socks off the opposition. Final score reads Cavs 120 Warriors 90.
Which one, which one
The number one pick in the NBA Draft will be Ben Simmons or Brandon Ingram that much we know. Who winds up with the 76ers or the Lakers is still uncertain to a degree. The number three pick by the Celtics is even more intriguing, for weeks most of the mock drafts sites indicated the Celtics would make 7-1 Dragan Bender the pick. With approximately two weeks remaining until the draft mock site DraftExpress says the Celtics choice is 6-10 power forward Marquese Chriss from Washington. As for NBADraft.net they have 6-5 shooting guard Buddy Hield from Oklahoma. I certainly have no intention to speculate on who is chosen Danny Ainge operates unconventionally at times.
A tough schedule
Perennial basketball power Kansas has an excellent incoming class of prospects for the upcoming season. Perhaps based on this fact Bill Self’s team is taking on the Big Boys in the 2016-17 college season. The complete non-conference schedule is yet to be released however they have several worthy opponents on the agenda thus far. The Jayhawks will face Indiana (27-8), Duke (25-11) and Kentucky (27-9). This is probably Self thinking; “This will prepare them (Kansas) for the Big 12 race and the NCAA Tournament.” In all likelihood Self’s thought process is ahead of us.
Snakebite
A Kansas City Star reporter once wrote; “Mizzou fans believe their basketball program is snakebite.” In other words despite something good is always followed by something bad, the degree of bad has ranged. If we exclude the present Coach Kim Anderson the last three coaches tasted success. Quin Snyder was 126-91 while head coach; he was followed by Mike Anderson (111-57) and Frank Haith (76-28). Despite their plus .500 record both Snyder and Haith resigned before they were terminated. Anderson after declaring “I’m a Tiger for life” decided he wanted the Arkansas job when it opened.
For those unfamiliar Anderson served as an assistant under Nolan Richardson at Arkansas for a number of years. Kim Anderson can coach; his teams were 275-94 in his 12 seasons at the University of Central Missouri. Anderson’s last season UCM was NCAA Division II Champions finishing with a 30-5 record. Anderson was on the staff for long-time Coach Norm Stewart. He would interview to become head coach in 1999 but was passed over for Snyder. Recruiting is slightly different however X and O’s remain the same whether it’s Division I, II, III or NAIA basketball.
Where did he play?
Steph Curry should provide proof talent is everywhere, sure his dad played in the NBA but that didn’t aid his cause proving he belonged seal the deal. I lamented the fact on several occasions ability to play the game at a high skill level was not coming from smaller schools. Well that’s not exactly true we can point to Steph to counter that argument. We are lead to believe NBA stars only emerge from the Kentucky’s, Duke’s and Carolina programs. Davidson College in Davidson (NC) is a Division I program so they compete against the “big boys” however less than 2,000 undergraduates enrolled indicate it’s a small school.
Davidson is more likely to produce politician and artists over NBA athletes, example Woodrow Wilson 28th President of the United States attended Davidson. In addition former Secretary of State Dean Rusk current Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx along with Charles Wright Pulitzer Prize winning poet are just a few of the alumni who distinguish themselves. As for basketball if you are skilled enough skill NBA scouts will discover you regardless of where you play. Steph Curry is just one more example of the prior statement along with his 2X NBA Most Valuable Trophy.

Basketball from a fans perspective
Compared to whom?
I read an ESPN.com headline which caused me to smile; the story was a comparison of Steve Kerr’s won-loss record to the Zen Master Phil Jackson. If it sounds as though I’m critical of Kerr that’s not the case it’s my belief a number in the media and several fans are the real culprit. You heard the talk regarding Phil Jackson‘s coaching. “He never built a team with the Bulls or the Lakers; they were complete when he arrived.” While the statement might be true he still provided them directions that lead his teams to championships.
The same could be said for Kerr, under his leadership the Warriors were 67-15 with an NBA Championship. The recently completed season they broke the Bulls won-loss record finishing 73-9 and might be on the verge of a second championship. How about these numbers, under Mark Jackson’s last two years the Warriors record was 47-35 and then 51-31. The Warriors made the playoffs for the first time in five years under Jackson‘s coaching. Is it possible we only see greatness in front of us (Kerr) rather than what might have occurred in the past (Jackson)?
Gonzaga
The Spokane (WA) School is a winner every year; they have one of the best coaches in the nation few make a note of. The names Calipari, Coach K., Williams and Self receive all the national coverage. I stated few notice him but that’s his name Mark Few and we almost never hear his name in the conversation of great coaches.
The coach is now in his 17th year has a 466-111 (.808) record, in 2006-07 his Bulldog team won 23 games the lowest total under his leadership. His Gonzaga teams have won 30 games twice and 3X witnessed them winning 29. Two years ago Few’s team advanced to the Elite Eight the highest finish ever and that might be the problem. His teams have not tasted success in the NCAA Tournament and perhaps that enters into minds at the time you compile a list of good coaches.
Bits n Pieces
Over the years a number of prominent centers have played for the Lakers, Mikan, Chamberlain, Kareem and Shaq just a few of the names. Might one more name be added to the list? Mamadou N’Diaye originally from Senegal in West Africa is a 7-5 300 pound prospect from the University of California-Irvine. N’Diaye has been invited to a workout with the Lakers and the Rockets.
According to the report he’s not hired an agent so it’s possible he could return to Irvine for his senior year. His numbers this past season 12.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game in 23 minutes of action per game. Also invited for a workout is Indiana point guard Yogi Ferrell. The 6-1 Ferrell scored at a 17.3 ppg and dished out 5.6 assists for the Hoosiers.
Expansion is the name of the game in the Big 12. Although the league once was comprised of 12 teams it now contains only 10 teams. Expansions have been mandated for football however basketball will be affected just as well. The schools likely at the top of the Big 12 list are Houston and Memphis, Colorado State, Cincinnati and UConn have also been mentioned. I’m not the decider however I find most interesting the schools which might be added all have richer basketball programs (Colorado State might the exception) than football.
I’m going to briefly discuss the Draymon Green/Klay Thompson post-game comments. The NBA was a different game in the ‘70’s; the Warriors are very, very good. To compare teams (and individuals) in different eras resolves nothing. Ol skool says; “Hand checking allowed the game to be played differently.” 40 year olds and younger say; “We have zone defenses to deal with.” I intend to take no sides in this type of discussion (argument).
Writing today
Covering the NBA in the internet/social network age I come across bizarre stories at times. This one is perhaps the most strange and unusual I’ve read in a long, long time. I’m not going to name the source just report the story as it was written. “The Lakers propose to trade their pick to the 76ers in exchange for Jahlil Okafor. The 76ers would place Brandon Ingram at shooting guard and Ben Simmons at small forward. The Lakers would gain the center they so vitally need.” I cannot imagine who might have concocted such a peculiar story wrong on so many levels. Portions of this account might be correct let’s explore them bit by bit.
The Lakers do need a center---true, the Lakers could trade their pick---true. As for the balance it makes no sense on so many levels. Okafor is a talent although he’s yet to prove after but one season he’s an All-Pro center. So the Lakers trade the potential of a number two pick (Simmons or Ingram) for a center that’s really yet to be tested. Besides the fact if the Lakers were that thrilled about him they could have drafted Okafor last year. Simmons and Ingram play the same position small forward so in this set-up Ingram becomes a shooting guard---makes little sense in the real world. I have no idea of future events I can guarantee this the Lakers will not trade the pick for Jahlil Okafor.

Basketball from a fans perspective
The NFL
From time to time I must provide the basis for the publication. I was asked “Why don’t you cover the NFL or college football or even baseball”? Words eye view is an attempt to impart basketball from a fans perspective. Don’t wish to offend but if you want NFL, college football or baseball this is not the website. You might ask; “Why are you writing about basketball in July and August?” This is my response one of the local television stations has a Chiefs program on every Sunday evening 12 months of the year. I believe it’s okay for you and me to talk basketball in the same manner.
It ain’t that easy
Several in sports media have hinted the Lakers are in the perfect draft position. Picking second all they must get done is draft the player the 76ers don’t. Sounds simple enough is it really as easy as they make it out to be? Let’s check past NBA draft history? In 1983 Steve Stipanovich was taken with the second pick by the Pacers, that draft also contained Byron Scott, Dale Ellis and Clyde Drexler to name just a few. In fairness a Stipanovich injury cut short his career after a brief five seasons. In 1984 the Blazers chose Sam Bowie and with the third pick the Bulls chose Michael Jordan.
Bowie too suffered injury and never rose to the level expected although he managed to play 11 years for a number of NBA teams. You might ask the question how about the draft in more recent years. In 2005 Marvin Williams would become the second pick with the fourth pick the Hornets chose Chris Paul. 2008 Michael Beasley was chosen two and Russell Westbrook number four. Can you see the direction I’m going with this assessment, drafting talent is not automatic or easy as a number in the media would lead us to believe. Not only are NBA teams hoping they are making the best choice they also hope the prospects avoids injury that curtailed the careers of Stipanovich and Bowie.
Got his man
There was excitement in some circles at the time Shaka Smart moved to Texas and the Big 12. The Longhorns finished 11-7 in the conference and 20-13 overall in Smart’s first year. There is some concern in Austin losing four starters from last season however help is on the way. Arriving this fall is Andrew Jones a 6-4 shooting guard from Irving Texas, a late addition is Jarrett Allen a 6-10 220 pound center/forward and the number 15 prospects in Rivals 2006 list. Added to the mix is
6-11 230 pound center James Banks from Atlanta. With the holdovers plus these newcomers Texas should be competitive in the Big 12. Unless a coach inherits a “ready-made” roster whatever that is they must be given adequate time to implement their program. For me that number is year four, if a team hasn’t shown improvement in that time perhaps the coach should be shown the door.
Mislead
I’m the guy who picked the Cavs to win the NBA Championship the fat lady is not singing yet however she’s got to be tuning up. What happened, did the “weaker” Eastern Conference mislead us allowing the belief the Cavs were superior than appeared. Playoff victories over the Pistons, Hawks and Raptors certainly provided us proof this team from Cleveland was ready to be crowned. A strange occurrence on the road to their coronation as champions they ran into a roadblock in the form of the Warriors. Wednesday in Cleveland Game Three what do we expect or rather what should we expect the outcome?
Identical
I read the ESPN comments of Warriors exec Jerry West on Steph Curry. Bottom line West believes Curry could have easily played in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s. West claims Curry would have been knocked on his fanny more in those days however he would have gone to the free throw line more. At the time West played for the Lakers he stood 6-2 and weighed 175 pounds, Curry is 6-3 185 pounds nearly identical stats.

Basketball from a fans perspective
“I may be 7-2 but I never felt taller when standing in his shadow” the words of Kareem Abdul Jabbar describing his relationship with Muhammad Ali. On occasion there are athletes who are a cut above the sport they represent; in this instance we are not discussing athletic skill. This was the embellishment of the “The Greatest”.
Game Two
I’m 0-2 waiting on the “real Cavs” to make an appearance. This is a bunch of guys in Cavs jerseys trying to imitate the team we witnessed bogart its way through the Eastern Conference Playoffs. For those who might be unfamiliar with the word bogart the Urban Dictionary says; “To hog something that is supposed to be shared,” or “A person who bogarts.” The first definition might be a stretch however the second certainly fits.
As I mentioned I was a little apprehensive regarding the second game because the Curry/Thompson tandem only scored 20 points in Game One. They have scored 26 with roughly half a game remaining. I talked to a friend prior to the evening game. He said; “Maybe the Warriors believe they have a second life after almost losing to the Thunder.” I can’t disagree with him the Warriors appear really scary. With 7:08 left in the 4th quarter Curry goes to the bench----Warriors 92 Cavs 64. For the second evening in a row you can laugh at me again. Final 110-77.
Consider this
The television viewers for Game One of the Warriors-Cavs were 19.19 million folks. It was significantly higher than last years match and it was higher than Miami-San Antonio the previous season. I forgot we are told nobody watches the NBA according to a number of folks.
Teammates
The Cavs Kevin Love and Warriors Klay Thompson are battling one another on the basketball court. Once upon a time the two were teammates; back in 2001 they played on the same Lake Oswego (OR) Little League Baseball Team. As for how they managed to become teammates is interesting. Love’s father Stan was born in Southern California but played his college ball at Oregon University. Klay’s dad Mychal was born in the Bahamas played his college ball at the University of Minnesota. He would be drafted by Portland and spent the major portion of his NBA career in Oregon as a member of the Blazers.
Coach K.
Not sure how this subject came up however Duke’s Coach K. made his intentions known he is not close to retirement. Kentucky’s John Calipari (57 years old) made a similar pronouncement much earlier. Why the discussion on retirement it could have something to do with age. Coach K. is 69 years old and will turn 70 before the 2016-17 season is complete. Kentucky and Duke are tied for first in recruiting for the Class of 2016 prospects. Other senior citizens coaches include Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim (71 years old) and Larry Brown Southern Methodist University (75 years old) will have another birthday before the season begins.
Why?
You have an opinion I have an opinion everyone should have an opinion depending on the subject matter. It’s just that an opinion not actual fact, unless your name is called out is it important? Here’s the example Mike Greenberg on ESPN’s Mike and Mike. He claims ESPN/ABC analyst Jeff Van Gundy was calling him out. During the Thunder-Warriors series Greenberg said; “It looks as though Steph (Curry) is hurt.” I must be honest I don’t always agree with some of the stuff Van Gundy says.
He’s got one clear advantage over Greenberg and me; he’s coached the game at the NBA level. There is a clear difference between “talking about the game (Greenberg, me and you) then playing or coaching.” Van Gundy didn’t provide his audience a name besides the fact the audience for the telecast was much larger than Greenberg’s radio/television audience. Unless Greenberg “confessed” we had no idea who Van Gundy might have been referencing.

Basketball from a fans perspective
It’s just one game
Okay Dub fans you have my permission to laugh at me, I believed in my heart of hearts the Cavs would come prepared to play. I figured the Warriors would be ready to play but Steph Curry with 11 points and Klay Thompson with 9 and they blow out the Cavs. I wasn’t prepared for this believing the Warriors had to secure scoring from Curry and Thompson in order to win the game and the series. The Warriors bench outplayed the Cavs bench and win by 15, final score 104-89. Oh well it’s just the first game lets see what happens on Sunday.
They agree
I found it interesting NBADraft.net and DraftExpress.com placed LSU’s Ben Simmons at the top of their 2016 mock draft sites. Then somewhere near the mid-point of the college basketball season they changed, one site dropped Simmons to second and elevated Duke’s Brandon Ingram to number one. At some point in the last two weeks both polls reflected the same player at the top of their poll. They project Simmons to be the number one pick to the 76ers and Ingram the second choice to the Lakers.
Memorial Day Massacre
It was a holiday weekend May 27 1985 to be precise Memorial Day. It was also the date the Boston Celtics faced the Lakers for the NBA Championship in the old Boston Garden. The “Massacre” part of the story the Celtics ran through, past and around the Lakers in the first game of the series later dubbed the Memorial Day Massacre.
The final score read Celtics 148 Lakers 114, Kareem scored a microscopic 12 points along with 3 rebounds. The 6-9 Magic Johnson wasn’t very “magic” pulling down a single rebound, James Worthy would lead the way for the Lakers scoring 20 points. The victorious Celtics were led by Kevin McHale and Scott Wedman both with 26 points, Wedman shot 11 for 11 from the floor. Despite the rough start of the series the Lakers would recover and go on to win the 1985 Championship 4 games to 2.
Take time
Monty Williams Thunder assistant announced he won’t return next season not shocking news for a number of reasons. In February his wife died tragically in an automobile accident when another vehicle struck hers. Its possible returning to his job aided the healing process to a point however the season is complete now. Basketball provided an opportunity to reflect on something other than the loss of his wife. Although his four children are older they still need time to bond with their father over the loss. Williams a former player and head coach (Pelicans) is basketball driven he will return to the NBA in some capacity when he‘s ready. If you've ever lost a close loved one you certainly can understand the pain Williams will continue to face.
Where is the basketball?
I was wrong; I believed the basketball from Wilt’s 100 point game must be displayed in the Naismith Hall of Fame. I’m viewing a program titled Sports Detectives on The Smithsonian Channel and the search is on for the basketball. Kerry Ryman interviewed claimed as a 14-year old he rushed onto the court at the conclusion of the March 2 1962 game and shook Wilt’s hand. The referee gave the ball to Chamberlain who tossed it toward the bench somehow Ryman intercepted it and raced out of the Hershey arena ball in his hands. In those days the NBA did not have the popularity of today; NBA teams would often schedule home games in other locations.
The Philadelphia Warriors scheduled the game for Hershey (PA) unaware history would be made. Ryman claims he later sold the basketball by auction to the tune of $500,000 however this portion of the story is in dispute as to the authenticity of the ball. It was later determined this was “one of the game balls” and not the ball Wilt scored the 100th point. The auction ball was later sold for $67,000 however the story doesn‘t end there. The “ball-boy” now an adult says “The Warriors took only 12 basketballs to the game and left with half that number.” The mystery remains just that, we have no idea where the 100 point basketball is to be found.
