Basketball from a fans perspective

1983
On Monday the AP named the Houston Cougars number one in the nation in the weekly Top 25 poll. This becomes the first time Houston’s been named in the top spot since 1983. That Cougar team was led by a slew of NBA talent including Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler both now in the Hall of Fame. The 1983 Cougars finished the regular season with 31 wins and only 3 losses, they were 16-0 in the defunct Southwest Conference. This Cougar team despite the sparkling record failed to win the NCAA Championship.

One of the 3 losses they experienced that year was to North Carolina State 54-52 in the final game. NC State made an improbable run that year culminating with the championship. They were 25-10 going into the championship game. With time running out and behind in the game Dereck Whittenburg of NC State hoisted a 30-foot shot which didn’t hit the rim but landed in the hands of NC State’s Lorenzo Charles. Charles dunked the ball in the basket, end of game. That was then, this is now, and it certainly is the hope of Kelvin Sampson history doesn’t repeat itself.

Sam Presti
In 2007 Sam Presti was hired as GM of the Sonics, at age 29 he was the second youngest in NBA history to occupy the position. I don’t wish to give him too much credit perhaps it’s his scouting staff with the Thunder or maybe its him. Over the years the Thunder have been able to draft a great number of talented players. Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, James Hardin, Serge Ibaka and Steven Adams to name just a few. More recently it’s been Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luguentz Dort, last season shooting guard Josh Giddey was added to the roster.

In June the Thunder drafted 7 foot 1 Chet Holmgren and Ousmaine Dieng. Dieng is a work in progress while Holmgren is forced to sit out the season sitting out the season due to injury, both appear to be additional youthful talent added to the Thunder roster. So what’s next, despite adding talent continually in the draft they lose players to free agency or trade them. Durant, Westbrook and Hardin departed Oklahoma City quite a while ago. The Thunder are in a rebuild mode once again finishing last season with a 24-58 record their second losing season in a row. NBA basketball is still relatively new to OKC however I wonder how patient these fans are going to be going forward.

Could they compete, I believe they can
As indicated earlier there is a report Gonzaga is considering aligning itself with the Big XII Conference. I raised the question of no football program for the Zags, but friends claim that doesn’t matter. Despite the fact I continue to believe my view has merit we can check out a few things. There is no doubt in my mind Mark Few continues to turn out winning teams every season at the Spokane Washington school. Recruiting has even seen a number of international athletes find their way to Gonzaga. The one knock on Gonzaga by critics is no NCAA championship on their resume but even that’s not fair in my opinion.

These same folks claim the West Coast Conference is not that strong, they say that’s why Gonzaga dominates conference play but fails in the tournament. I ain’t buying that observation, I believe the Zags have run into better teams. In any event what does this possible move do for the Big XII?  Currently the Big XII in some circles is considered the strongest in the nation. Adding a Gonzaga into the mix would do nothing but strengthen it even more in my view. If the football issue is not seen as a negative, then the Big XII Conference should extend an invitation. Although it was a non-conference game, they knocked off Kentucky in this early college season.

“Who you calling Street Clothes”?
Anthony Davis missed so many games cynics nicknamed him “street clothes.” While AD’s missed significant time how about the duo down the hall at Staples Center (I know)? Without checking the numbers I believe Paul George and Kawhi Leonard’s salary exceeds that of AD and they too have been M.I.A. Let’s check, excluding this early season since 2019 the Clippers have played 246 games. Any idea how many of those games both were in action? I will help you; George has been in action for 133 of those games. As for Kawhi Leonard it’s been a lesser number, he’s played in 109.

As its often stated “Injuries are part of the game” there is no way to avoid them. Unfortunately Leonard’s dealt with a series of injuries over the last 6 seasons which extends beyond his recent tenure with the Clippers, the total missed games is 242. The hope of course is always to be free of injury which has not always been the case for Leonard or George for that matter. You might ask the question why is this account important, continue reading for the explanation?

In the big picture it’s not, my intent was simple. My hope was to point out injuries have impacted play of the Lakers, but it’s also done the same for the Clippers. As this is written (Monday morning) both George and Leonard have been missing from the lineup for a number of games. Understand this, the 2022-23 season was reported to be their breakout year you know. The Clippers would overcome the past frustrations of prior Clipper teams; they would emerge from the Western Conference Finals to compete for the NBA championship. Will this be the year they escape their frustrating past?

Basketball from a fans perspective

For the first time
Tonight Dennis Gates leads his Mizzou Tigers across the state line to face Wichita State. Over the years Mizzou and Wichita State have rarely face one another on the basketball court although the two are less than 400 road miles apart. That’s really no big deal KU is even closer a 2.5-hour drive but refuses to play the Shockers, okay that’s a different story. In any event this will be the first road test for Mizzou as the previous 7 have all been played in Columbia.

Don’t allow the 4-win 2 loss record of the Shockers to mislead you, they play competitive basketball under Isaac Brown now in his third year at the helm. Regardless of the outcome this evening the road gets much tougher for Mizzou from here on out. By the way, no more jokes about Mizzou playing high school teams it's become old now. Gates had to prepare the way for a "new" team which meant playing a relative easy schedule early. Hopefully it builds grit and determination for the future.

No NBA basketball for you…on the other hand
A co-worker asked me, “Will the NBA ever return to Kansas City.” After thinking a couple of minutes I said, “I don’t think so” and then proceeded to elaborate. At the time the Kings left the area in 1985 it was a different sports town. At that time I believed the baseball Royals were the clear-cut leader with the Chiefs in second place. Without research I’m unsure whether it was the Kings or the departed NHL Scouts in third place. In any event in 2022 we see a different dynamic at work, the NFL Chiefs are now the leaders with the Royals in second however Sporting Kansas City soccer is quite popular. We now have the Current a woman’s soccer team which soon will have its own stadium located on the Missouri River.

As you can see the sports dollar might be divided even more if an NBA team were to be placed here. The Kansas City metro population is rising although nothing compared to the South and Southwest portions of the nation. The latest figures I could locate indicate the population is 2,392,035 and rising steadily. This is my belief; fans might follow a variety of different sports however there is a clear winner. Which sport are you willing to pay large sums of money to see? At this time I’m unsure if that is an NBA team unless a Steve Ballmer type might come forth. Those explored thus far are the cons, are there any pros? I can say emphatically yes, understand this next portion.

I can think of only one instance where the NBA commissioner stepped in and said, “No you can’t do that.” It occurred the time Chris Hansen’s group had the moving vans backed up to the Kings headquarters in Sacramento, the teams was on its way to Seattle if not for David Stern stepping in at the last minute to stop the move. I say that to say this, reports indicate the Pelicans are hemorrhaging blood in New Orleans, owner Gayle Benson has ties to New Orleans besides ownership of the NFL Saints and NBA Pelicans. The lease for the Caesars Superdome where the Pelicans play expires in 2024, would Benson decide to move her team on I-49 north to Kansas City? She could be that rich owner I mentioned earlier in this account.

A dome is now a requirement
The NCAA announced the 2028 Championship game will be played in Las Vegas in the Allegiant Stadium home of the NFL Raiders. The fact Las Vegas was chosen might be surprising however the fact of the game being played in a stadium not so. If we check the locations of past the championship games the day of the NCAA Championship played in a standard arena are over. In 1971 UCLA faced Villanova in the Houston Astrodome and the NCAA has never looked back. After all if you can sell tickets for 60,000-70,000 patrons over the KFC Yum Center (22,000) considered the largest college arena in the nation it makes sense. I know the Carrier Dome at Syracuse can seat a greater number for basketball but I’m discussing pure basketball arenas, Carrier doesn’t fit in the equation. The game must be played in a football stadium or so it seems, check this out:

2023 NRG Stadium
2024 State Farm Stadium
2025 Alamodome
2026 Lucas Oil Stadium
2027 Ford Field
2028 Allegiant Stadium
2029 Lucas Oil Stadium
2030 AT&T Stadium

You might note with the exception of San Antonio all the named stadiums serve as home field for NFL teams. At the present time San Antonio has no NFL team although football is played in the Stadium. This offers further proof the NCAA is all about the money it can earn off the labor of student-athletes. Do they care about the welfare of athletes, you’d find me in the middle on this issue. Before someone misunderstands my statement, the NCAA wouldn’t do anything to physically harm the career of an athlete it’s the other things, I’ve always found so difficult to understand.

Basketball from a fans perspective

I’m back
Mass quantities of turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce and rolls were consumed last Thursday. Of course that was Thanksgiving celebrated in the U.S. (I know my Canadian readers observe Thanksgiving October 9), in any event basketball continues despite my absence. College play began in earnest with several teams participating in tournaments. My Lakers demonstrated life still existed for them. As for the other team…do you realize HOW FEW games have been played with Paul George and Kawhi Leonard together? I’ve got the number somewhere and will provide it for you, plenty of catchup to do.

It might be funny to you
A friend (and Jayhawk fan) asked me, “Did Mizzou play a high school team?” I smiled and ensured him Houston Christian was not that, the school underwent a name change and “Baptist” was replaced by “Christian. In any event they are a Division I team playing in the Southland Conference. They had the misfortune to face a red-hot Mizzou squad and Houston Christian would be on the losing end 105-69. As they say in the ski world (which I don’t ski), “Don’t get out in front of your skis.” I take that to indicate don’t get ahead of the outcome or conclusion of the story, despite that warning by yours truly I cannot help but become excited about this Dennis Gates crew.

Mizzou basketball to date is exciting as they are playing an up-tempo game shooting a sizzling number from the three line. This version of Tiger basketball is 7-0 for the first time since the 2013-14 season. In addition in those seven games Mizzou’s scored over 20 team assists a game. Against Houston Christian the Tigers shot nearly 64% from the floor, in addition at least for now everyone scores. Defenses cannot key on one particular scorer, in the 7 games there’s been a different high scorer in each and this force the opposition to stop the entire team from scoring. Now for the downside, a Big Man report. A member of Mizzou Nation questioned why no sighting of 7 foot 2 Mabor Majek or 6 foot 10 Mohamed Diara. Both players made an appearance, but I see “holes” in their game. Both need work with the coaching staff, don’t confuse my statement its clear the coaching staff must believe in their potential.  More on them and Mizzou in the upcoming weeks.

A race to the bottom
We’ve heard that term utilized regarding the 2023 NBA draft. It’s implied teams will lose on purpose or tank in an effort to ensure they are able to draft Victor Wembanyma. This will be the second time something similar might occur in NBA history, the first time around it was the Houston Rockets being the guilty party although no conclusive proof exists. If you check the Sunday October 9 blog this was briefly discussed, I now intend to provide additional content. The 1983-84 Rockets despite having Rookie of the Year Ralph Sampson in the lineup finished in last place in the Midwest Division, one late season game in particular stands out.

None of the next portion you are about to read can be documented it’s all conjecture. As you might be aware the Kings then located in Kansas City were not very good either, they ended that season in 4th place with a 38-44 record. The Rockets had a late season game in Kansas City, they raced out to a huge lead the number is uncleared. At some point in the 3rd quarter Bill Fitch then Rockets coach pulled all his starters. The Kings playing the reserves of the Rockets came roaring back and would win the game. Although the Rockets didn’t finish with the worst record they did managed to vie for the top pick.

The Blazers would lose the coin flip with the Rockets, the Rockets would pick first and the Blazers second. This draft is considered one of the strongest in NBA history with 4 Hall of Fame players in the 1984 draft. As for our account the Rockets with the top pick chose Akeem (later spelling corrected to Hakeem) Olajuwon, the Blazers selected Sam Bowie. The 7-foot Olajuwon would join the 7 foot 4 Sampson becoming the first twin tower tandem in the NBA. Olajuwon would lead the Rockets to back-to-back championships, as for Sampson injuries cut short his career although he like his former teammate is also in the Naismith Hall of Fame. Can I prove any portion of this account, of course I can? Ralph Sampson was Rookie of the Year and in the Hall of Fame. Olajuwon is a two-time NBA champion and is also in the Hall, as for his connection to Kansas City you become the decider on that story.

That was my father’s sport
All Pro running back and Super Bowl champion Calvin Hill spent most of his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys. His son Grant chose basketball over football and was an outstanding player at Duke. Despite being impacted in the NBA by extensive injuries Grant would be enshrined in the Naismith and College Basketball Hall of Fame. Today he is part-owner of the Hawks and involved in other business pursuits. In this next story we see the son didn’t follow the father either, I speak of NFL Hall of Fame running back Edgerrin James.

One of the sons who shares his name, Edgerrin James Jr. has chosen basketball rather than the sport of his famous father. Junior is a 6-foot 1 inch 190-pound point guard and plays for Olympia High School in Orlando. He’s awarded 4 stars and rated number 59 in the ESPN 100; Rivals also awards 4 stars and rates him number 53 in the nation. Recently Junior signed a letter of intent to play basketball at the University of Cincinnati in the fall of 2023. The son has a name familiar to a number of sports fans, the name alone fails to connect him to greatness on the court. Junior must make his own way and prove he’s good enough to play at the collegiate level and perhaps beyond.

Break
The Tuesday edition of Off the Dribble is going on hiatus for a week. Publishing will begin again on November 29, 2022, it’s likely many readers in the U.S. will be observing Thanksgiving. My hope your gathering of family and friends to be fine. If you are travelling for the holiday, I wish for you a safe return.

Kyrie Irving did it
NO, it’s not what you might have thought. Yes, Irving did return to the Nets after his suspension and was a contributor to the win. That’s not what this report is to cover it’s about Ben Simmons. The talented but mysterious point guard scored 22 points along with 8 rebounds and 5 assists, these were key to the 127-115 victory over the Grizzlies. Simmons had 5 turnovers in the game but considering he was playing the point the ball was probably in his hands a great deal of the game over Irving and others.

The Pacific Division
Same teams but certainly in unusual places…at least for now. Although the Lakers have won three games in a row they still sit in last place in the Pacific Division. A game+ in front of them in 4th place the Warriors with Steph Curry imitating Step Curry. With Kawhi Leonard missing this early season the Clippers sit in third place. Shocker, in second place the torrid almost surprising Sacramento Kings. Sitting atop the division are the Suns led by 37-year-old Chris Paul. What occurs from this point going forward, who knows. What’s up is down, what’s down might eventually be up. The Betty Davis line, “Fasten your seat belts it’s going to be a bumpy night season.” You asking who am I quoting, you must not be a movie buff?

Will
It’s my belief sometimes in the midst of greatness we see it but fail to acknowledge it. That might be the case for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He doesn’t have the Super Bowl rings (yet) of Joe Montana or Tom Brady, but he’s definitely got the swagger they have. If a game is close as it was Sunday night, I believe he’s never out of it as long as there is time remaining on the clock. He’s got that DNA only a handful of athletes own. It exists in other sports too, in the NBA we could say Michael Jordan had it, so did Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.

At a point during his career I believed LeBron James possessed it although as this is written I’m unsure if it exists currently. The simple explanation is the will to win no matter the score, that fails to take into consideration the possibility of a loss. The NBA players mentioned plus Mahomes have certainly suffered defeats. The difference to me, they are saying, “Okay you got me this time, the next time we meet I will be better prepared, and I will beat you.” I believe the term Super Star has been overused, we’ve even applied it to talented players but have been more lenient than necessary. In closing allow this further explanation, it’s unnecessary for you to admire the athlete but doggone you’ve got to acknowledge the will to win.

Is he the one?
You might remember in the first Matrix film Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) was attempting to convince Neo (Keanu Reeves) he was The One. In was near the end before Neo began to believe he truly was The One to lead them in the war against the machines. Much of Mizzou Nation is asking a similar question of Dennis Gates, are you The One? A little background for many, legendary coach Norm Stewart was forced to retire in 1999 after 32 years on the job. I think all of us realize with few exceptions the tenure for most coaches is not that lengthy but for Mizzou it’s been more complicated.

The coaching history has not produced much success looking briefly at the past. With the exception of Mike Anderson (2006-11) who was hired by Arkansas the others have been terminated or would have been fired (Quin Snyder, Frank Haith) if they had not stepped down first. I’ve mentioned this previously the hire of Gates was underwhelming to most in Mizzou Nation. Despite the concern by fans of the program they must face reality, Mizzou plays in a Power 5 Conference but the basketball history since Stewart has been up and down. We must wait before we ask the question of Dennis Gates, is he the one?

Basketball from a fans perspective

No votes
Don’t expect Mizzou to receive any votes in the weekly Top 25 poll. I say this despite the fact they won their 5th game in a row without a defeat. It's good for members of Mizzou Nation to see them winning in this early basketball season. For the 5th game in a row Mizzou had a plus 20 assist afternoon against Mississippi Valley State University. What I’ve enjoy so much this early season is the unselfish factor among this group of Tigers.

In addition there is no single scorer to key on in the offense coach Gates runs. Mizzou had 5 players in double figures with starter D’Moni Hodge and Isiaih Mosley in a reserve role with 18 points. The one negative once again rebounding the basketball although MVSU finished the early evening only slightly ahead. Mizzou Nation must relish the good times because ahead lies the tough, touch SEC Conference. It should be of note, I watched this game on ESPN+ I decided to pay to see.

Maybe I’m the one off base
On Sunday I published a story indicating James Harden was a talented athlete. Despite offering praise I indicated he was not a leader. After writing and publishing that story along with others I had a thought, maybe I’m off base. Despite one’s talent it fails to make everyone a leader, I could use my favorite player the late Kobe Bryant. I don’t remember a fellow NBA player making this statement however a number of fans did. They said, “He’s (Kobe) not a leader,” my response is perhaps. Reading what many wrote about Kobe his mindset might have stated “If you are not going to help…get out of the way.”

Recently I read Laker coach Phil Handy said “Guys would show up at the gym at 6:00 a.m. and Kobe had already been there an hour or so.” His leadership was the role he embraced; he expected his teammates to play close to the same level as himself. That mentality might also be James Harden and a host of others who believe their game provides leadership rather than cajoling a teammate.  Everyone cannot take on the role of a Magic Johnson or Chris Paul. If you read the James Hardin story yesterday do me a favor, apologize for me. Let’s just say I was unable to see the Big Picture on this one, I may have missed on this.

“The World’s most Famous Arena”
The headline above represents Madison Square Garden and the name often attributed to the home of the NBA Knicks, NHL Rangers and other entertainment venues. This building at 4 Pennsylvania Plaza in Manhattan is the fourth arena to hold that name. Even more interesting the arena opened in 1968 is actually not square, if you check photos of the outside, they detail a round building. In any event the history behind the name is quite noteworthy. The first MSG opened in 1879, the second in 1890 and number three opened in 1925.

Although the Pennsylvania location is the oldest NBA arena operating today it’s been renovated several times over the years. The arena is also home to the St. John’s Red Storm basketball team and boxing, mixed martial arts, concerts, ice shows, circuses, professional wrestling and other forms of sports and entertainment. MSG also is unique in another area, generally most sports events the crowd will be dressed casually not in Spike Lee’s house. It would appear Wall Street types leave their office and head for the arena some evening rather than home. This is but a brief look at Madison Square Garden, “The World’s most Famous Arena.”

The Kangaroos
The University of MO-Kansas City or UMKC has a new coach too. We welcome veteran coach Marvin Menzies to the barbeque capital of the nation. Menzies took over when Billy Donlon decided he would take an assistant job at Clemson. I thought the Donlon move was a little strange, granted Clemson is certainly more big-time basketball than Summit League. To leave a head coaching job for an assistant seemed a backward move to me. In any event Menzies is a veteran coach whose been around the block for a time. Kansas City will become his third stop as a head coach, but he brings a veteran presence to a team striving to improve.

Last season Kansas City finished tied for third place with a 12-6 record, 19-12 overall. Menzies is in the same position as Dennis Gates some 150 miles down I-70. Most of us in Kansas City have no idea what to expect, we must adopt a wait and see attitude. One more note which has nothing to do with Menzies. You might have noticed I used Kansas City to describe the team. I believed about two years ago the school decided to place Kansas City on the team’s jerseys and they would go by that name in the media. I’m unsure as to the why, UMKC could be confusing to someone in Maine but certainly not University of Missouri-Kansas City. Oh well they don’t pay me the big bucks for these decisions, truth is they pay me NO bucks. By the way the team nickname kangaroos still bothers me.

It's just me
You realize I have no control over anything an NBA team decides to do. My only control is to complain to readers like you so here goes. I’ve had a long-held belief you only retire jerseys of athletes who played for the franchise in that city. As an example the Sacramento Kings have retired Oscar Robertson and Tiny Archibald’s jersey numbers. Robertson played for the franchise when it was the Cincinnati Royals, as for Tiny he played exclusively when the Kings called Kansas City home.

There are probably other teams however the Kings and their retired jerseys are the first that come to mind. Okay Larry Laker where are you going with this account…tell us please? This early season has seen the Lakers retire number 99 which belonged to the late George Mikan. Mikan was a giant in more than one way, the 6 foot 10 Mikan was an early basketball pioneer for the NBA. With that said what’s the problem with retiring his jersey? Mikan retired as a player in 1956, at that time the franchise was headquartered in Minneapolis. The Lakers did not move to Los Angeles until 1960 so you see the issue. I know I said at the beginning of this rant it’s just me with the problem.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Not a good move however it wasn't his choice
Playing in the G-League fails to indicate NBA hopes are dead, there is always the possibility of return. We can look no further than Jordan Clarkson of the Jazz as an example, speaking of the Jazz this is a connected story to them. At the time the Cavs drafted Ochai Agbaji last June, I thought it was a good fit for him, the later trade sending him and others to the Jazz not so good. To me he demonstrated what hard work and determination will send you. Agbaji from Kansas City went from an average player at Kansas to becoming the 14th pick in the first round of the 2022 NBA draft. Agbaji appeared to have all the tools and the Cavs would be that right time and team and then the trade.

Once he was traded, I was disappointed for the youngster, I cannot detail the why however Agbaji saw little time on the court in a Jazz uniform. Despite the fact there was a housecleaning with Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell traded the players received except for Agbaji were veterans, the Jazz still remain a veteran team. After checking the roster and failing to see his name an investigation was undertaken by yours truly. I discovered this past week he was sent to their G-League team. Playing in the G-League is not the end of the world he can be re-called at any point, it appears my belief at the time has come to fruition. As a high first round draft pick Agbaji will be paid however it’s my view its more than money, it’s my belief he wants the opportunity to play.

“You knew the job was dangerous when you took it!”
I read an account sent to me by a friend, it detailed the writers status of NBA coaches. Of course in this instance it was his one opinion. It described those whose job was believed safe and a couple who might possibly lose theirs. There is no intent on my part to fire anybody, besides the fact I have no control in that area. What I did find interesting was the names he mentioned who might be venturing into dangerous territory. Tom Thibodeau with the Knicks and the Sixers Doc Rivers were those named. In both instances we have veteran coaches whose teams are underperforming.

There might be injury issues in both instances and other factors, if that is the case will management be patient? If there are other issues at work how long, maybe not long? I’m certainly in no position to determine if Thibodeau and Rivers should be fired but if we can see an underperforming team certainly management can as well. The writer indicated the Lakers Darvin Ham and Nets coach Jacque Vaughn were okay for now. Unless there is a serious matter occurring how can the Lakers, Nets (or any team) fire a first-year coach with so little time under their belt? Darvin Ham, Jacque Vaughn and any name I might have missed deserve time on the job.

More NCAA
The ineptness of the NCAA has been detailed a number of times in the past, this is one more example. Question, has anything been done about LSU basketball? Last March LSU fired basketball coach Will Wade; the firing had nothing to do with the coaches won-loss record. He was accused by the NCAA of offering cash and jobs to lure recruits to the school. Five major violations were supposed to have occurred under Wade so what’s occurred besides the firing…nothing. It’s only been 8 months, so it’s likely not enough time has elapsed after all look at Kansas basketball. We had almost four years since a finger was pointed at the program so what was the outcome? To date Bill Self is sitting out games so what is that saying?

Is it an admission of guilt or something else since the NCAA has done nothing except promote an air of impropriety by Self and Kansas basketball? For me that’s been the issue all along with the governing body of college sports. One school is accused of a penalty and the NCAA issues a slam dunk, another school with a similar issue and all we hear are crickets. I realize each case is not the same however the NCAA is either slow (Kansas) or we have a case such as Oklahoma State. The school self-reported and “quickly” the NCAA said, “Okay no NCAA Tournament (2022) for you despite the fact you admitted guilt.” In the meantime Kansas under suspicion at the time was yet to be adjudicated but were permitted to play. Why was OSU not permitted although indicting itself while Kansas still under investigation could play? I have no answer just confusion on my part.

Bits n Pieces
We are all witness to the growth of international basketball over the past 20+ years. We’ve seen an increasing number of international players arriving on these shores to play in the NBA while others have graced the rosters of American colleges throughout the nation, this story is just one more example. Recently the St. Louis University Billikens announced the commitment of 7-foot 1 275-pound Bruce Zhang from China, he will join two other freshman in the Billikens 2023 class. I’m way ahead of you on the next question, you are asking does the Big Man from China have game? My answer to that question is unknown, allow me to provide the information I know. Zhang’s been in America for a time, he’s currently enrolled at the Skill Factory Prep High School in Atlanta Georgia. There were other schools with offers for the services of Zhang, they include Bradley University and Coastal Carolina.

Do I pay for ESPN+ or just wait out the balance of the non-conference schedule? Once SEC play begins no problem, all the games are available for viewing. I’m unsure if this impacts you as it does me, the early season Mizzou games are not televised. Correction, they are available if I wish to pay for them on ESPN+. This is my mind set, the cost is nominal so that’s not the issue. My issue, if I decide to purchase the package in all likelihood, I will keep it. I’m sure there is additional programming beyond Mizzou basketball I might find interesting. What to do, what to do.

Over the length of time I’ve followed the NBA I’ve witnessed a number of players. Several I believe have been outstanding…as for others it’s been a different outlook. I’m not referring to the next to the last guy on the bench I’m talking about those who play major minutes. Often, they are a team’s leading scorer, rebounder or assist man. I might say “I’m not as impressed as I was at one time.” That’s the case for me regarding the Sixers James Hardin. Through his time with the Thunder, Rockets, Nets and now the Sixers he’s clearly demonstrated he can score. His assist numbers have always been outstanding so he's not a selfish player but there is something missing, I believe it is the ability to lead a team. I wish someone could prove to me I’m wrong. Perhaps you can be an outstanding athlete without the ability to lead.

There’s been another Wembanyama sighting but this time it’s not Victor who is the subject of this discussion. We have been told Victor has a 15-year-old younger brother. The brother is Oscar Wembanyama, and he stands 6 foot 7 in height, unlike his older brother Oscar is yet to play professionally. As most are aware Euro youth can begin playing professionally much sooner than their American counterparts. OTE Elite can sign 16-years old but is yet to do so far, to my knowledge only those who skipped their senior year of high school.

I can’t get too excited
If you check most NBA mock draft sites, the 2023 NBA draft indicates the Pelicans with the Laker pick will choose the third player in the draft. Of course this is based on current play of the Lakers and the fact they are in last place in the Pacific Division. The Lakers find themselves in this spot after trading for Anthony Davis in 2019 who helped them win the 2020 NBA Championship. I cannot, no I take that back, I cannot do revisionist history as some in the media wish to do.

If the season played out as indicated thus far is there a guarantee the Pelicans have the opportunity to draft Victor Wembanyama? With the draft weighted and more ping pong balls in the hopper the odds are greater but not guaranteed. The team with the worst record is not always ensured the number one slot. I expect Laker play to improve whether it’s a natural progression or a significant trade is made. So here we are standing at the edge with a considerable number of Laker Nation claiming the woes regarding the AD trade…not this member. I’d love for the Lakers to have the opportunity to draft Wemby as he’s nicknamed but it ain’t gonna happen.

It’s easy to understand my attitude
This has been mentioned in the past, I live in Kansas City Missouri. My residence is less than two miles from State Line Road, once I cross that street, I’m in Kansas. I have no issues regarding the State of Kansas, some of my best friends live there. My issue is with the arrogance of an untold number of Kansas basketball fans. I’m forced to acknowledge the on-court success of Kansas basketball, just cause its occurred doesn’t mean I must accept it. Allow me to complain about local media, the accomplishments of Kansas basketball has forced blinders on the eyes of all.

Our locals for the most part do a great job of ignoring any news emanating from Columbia Missouri. I realize the news cycle has changed; less time is allocated for the locals to cover sports at least in the Kansas City market. The other evening one of our local guys provides viewers highlights of the Kansas game and even video, you say that’s par for the course. It might be except Mizzou played the same evening won their game and this media person failed to even mention it. As I indicated earlier there is no argument on my part Kansas basketball has certainly been more successful on the court. I don’t expect anyone in the local media to slobber over Mizzou, but I do expect equal coverage win or lose.

Kiss of death
What’s that you say, the Kings have won 5 games in a row. Not the NBA Kings of Sacramento that can’t be correct…can it? Well the sun is not rising in the west and going down in the east but that’s the story. During that streak the Kings have beaten the Cavs, Warriors and blistered the Nets for 153 points. I don’t believe the front office is entertaining playoff tickets printed however this is a vast improvement so far. You might remember at one point I said the Kings were the worst run team in the NBA. Part of the problem I believed was the revolving door of head coaches.

The Kings hired Mike Brown in May of 2022 so perhaps there are two things at work here. Brown has past experience as a head coach plus the roster of talent appears to be focused so far on this early season. Point guard De’Aaron Fox has continued developing his game and Domantas Sabonis acquired by the Kings from the Pacers last season have led the way. I’m unsure how Kings fans feel but after 16 years of losing basketball they must be smiling from ear to ear. I expect shining a light on the Kings franchise will not be a kiss of death, I believe barring injuries they will continue to play good basketball.

Depends on your perspective
Sometimes you hear one of those statements that makes you go huh. That was the case this morning while driving to work, the host on one of our local sports talk radio stations said this. “The college basketball season kinda slipped up on me, I’ve been so busy watching Mahomes and the Chiefs this season etc. etc. etc.” I didn’t fill in the balance of his comment I simply wanted to explain to you what he said.

I knew what time it was despite the fact of also being witness to Mahomes out dueling a number of other NFL quarterbacks. It’s clear to me (and this is no criticism) the guy is an NFL fan. If the sport, you love is being played you tune in. He stated for his radio audience his position what is most important to him, it certainly isn’t basketball he proved that fact. I’m a Chiefs fan as well however I was keenly aware when the NBA and college basketball season began play. If this sounds as if I’m criticizing the radio host that is not the case, my priority and maybe others is basketball.

Not real surprising
Anyone owning a sports franchise these days no matter whether its baseball, the NFL or NBA must have deep, deep pockets. We can guess probably a number of former owners couldn’t afford a franchise today. The Forbes people conducted a list of the richest sports owners, and it turns out at the top is Steve Ballmer Clippers owner. According to his bio-Ballmer was hired by Bill Gates at Microsoft in 1980, he remained on the company’s board of directors until 2014.

Ballmer was the chief executive officer of Microsoft from 2000-2014, he’s listed now as an investor and businessman, we could say the businessman part includes his purchase of the Clippers in 2014. At the time the NBA was searching for an owner Oprah Winfrey wealthy in her own right bid for the franchise with a partner before dropping out. Ballmer paid a record $2 billion for the Clipper franchise and now this. The owner is building his own arena in Inglewood in an attempt to separate his team from the Lakers who share the same city and arena.

Welcome to Mizzou
The school announced the signing of a fourth member in the Class of 2023, coming on board is 6-foot 7-inch forward Danny Stephens from Augusta, Illinois.  This village in Illinois is 150 road miles northeast of Columbia Missouri so he won’t be too far from home. Stephens is signing as a preferred walk-on and with that an explanation is required for those unfamiliar with the term. “Preferred Walk-On-This is the highest status as a walk-on.

You are guaranteed a spot on the team and are going to receive all the support of normal scholarship athletes.” Stephens in his junior year at Southeastern High School led his team to an Elite Eight appearance. As a first-team all-state selection Stephens averaged 28 points 10 rebounds and 2.4 assists a game. He shot 63% from the floor and 94% from the line, Stephens is awarded no stars by any recruiting site but does that matter? Coach Gates is pleased with his signing, and this maintains Mizzou’s ranking at number 21 recruiting in the nation by 247Sports. Welcome to Mizzou Danny Stephens.

Really?
When do we suppose the last time the Houston Cougars were number three in any basketball poll? The question required research on my part and a surprise. The 1982-83 team nicknamed Phi Slama Jama finished the regular season number one in the AP poll with a 31-3 record. This is no intent on my part to forecast the immediate future for the Cougars. That Cougar team contained Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde “The Glide” Drexler both now in the Naismith Hall of Fame.

Of course I’ve stated time and time again polls prove nothing it’s the final horn that counts. In this instance the first Monday in April is a truer form of measurement for a team’s success. I haven’t followed the program that closely, so this portion required additional research. Since the 2014-15 season Kelvin Sampson’s first at the helm the Cougars have never finished below .500. In addition over the years his Cougar teams have won 30+ games twice, 2019 and 2022. I once heard someone claim Sampson wins despite the lack of recruiting McDonald’s All Americans to his program.

The struggle is real
We know the struggles of the Lakers thus far in the season, they have been documented here, written, discussed and covered extensively for the past month in various media outlets. The question continues what might have occurred if the Lakers had not mortgaged their future for a “win now” mantra. It’s interesting I’ve mentioned this previously despite the record the Lakers have done an excellent job of analyzing and drafting talent…that’s the good. The bad, few draftees or free agents assembled in the recent past remain with the team.

One of those former Lakers recently spoke about the situation, Kyle Kuzma now with the Wizards claimed “We couldn’t have won with the roster then” or similar words. Okay let’s check out just a few, besides Kuzma there was Lonzo Ball, Julius Randle, Jordan Clarkson, D’Angelo Russell. Now all these talented players were not with the Lakers at the same time, but the intent is to detail the keen eye the Lakers scouting staff did in assembling talent. The Lakers are stuck in the mud at this point but with revisionist history we can pose a question. What might have occurred in their future if they managed to maintain at least a few of the talented players that left town?

Geography…right out the window
I’ve not read a timeframe, but Southern Cal and UCLA are headed for the Big 10 Conference. These Pacific Time Zone teams will be aligned with those (on the most part) in the Eastern Time Zone. That’s not as extreme as Oklahoma and Texas, both southwest schools plan a move to the SEC which is comprised of mostly deep south schools. At least this is only one time zone apart from the majority of SEC schools. The University of MO (Kansas City) was once a member of the Western Athletic Conference. Midwest situated Kansas City had conference games scheduled with Utah, California and Washington in the Mountain and Pacific Time Zones. What is the driving force behind the schools claiming geography is unimportant?

I can’t be sure of anything however the driving force has got to be financial, isn’t everything else? We have no idea what the future holds however I was talking to a friend recently and this is what he told me. “I believe eventually there will be two large super conferences and a bunch of little ones.” Who goes and who remains might be the question however we might believe this to be the decider. Power 5 schools will be in the forefront of this intended plan, so Texas, Alabama, Ohio State and several others will be the leaders. As I write this, I’m unsure if I like this and for one reason alone…rivalry’s. In the Big 8 and later Big XII days the rivalry between Mizzou and Kansas was amazing, they hated our guts and we hated theirs. All that’s gone now with the school’s located in different conferences. I could foresee a similar occurrence with two super conferences.

Maybe they require a closer check too
The most valuable team in the NBA according to Forbes, the Warriors are literally upside down. We have written and discussed into infinity how badly the Lakers have played so far, what about the Warriors? As this is written the defending NBA Champions sit in 4th place in the Pacific Division of the NBA 2.5 games above the last place Lakers. On Tuesday evening the Warriors surrendered 153 points to THE KINGS in a loss! For a defending NBA Champion team we might be asking, what is going on in San Francisco?  Steph Curry appears to remain Steph Curry but what about the others?

Jordan Poole emerges an ascending NBA All Star, James Wiseman has been sent to their G-League team although the Warriors claim “This is not a demotion.” Klay Thompson is scoring although he appears to no longer be the lights out shooter of old. Some might consider the leftover Draymond Green drama to be an issue although that doesn’t appear to be the case. Green at 32-years of age is having his usual productive season, there must be something casual NBA fans are unable to dissect. Coach Steve Kerr might be facing his most difficult season coaching the Warriors team. The coach must make the determination which player(s) are not performing at the maximum level.

Following his progress
I hope anyone reading this is not connected with Bradley basketball in any manner. On Tuesday evening Bradley beat Eastern Michigan rather easily 89-61. This account is more about one of the participants over details of the game, it’s another Emoni Bates account. It’s my intention to follow his maturation as he adjusts to his new team. As reported earlier his game against Michigan was outstanding, the question would he be able to continue the trend.

Bates shooting was not as outstanding as before but manageable at 42.9%, his 3-point shooting was down a bit but still at nearly 43%. Bates managed to raise his free throw percentage to almost 73% in this game. As for the problem, I am unable to determine other aspects of his game. Unlike NBA coverage ESPN stats contain no +/- numbers, in truth I am unable to determine the defensive effort of Bates. The Emoni Bates story almost demands there is a continuation in his effort this season. Bates is growing in two areas, his game appears to be growing as well as his stature. He’s now listed as 6 foot 10 inches and 190 pounds; at that height Bates might be the tallest shooting guard in the nation.

There are only 8
Veteran sportswriter Bill Simmons had an interesting and maybe controversial take on the NBA. Just in case you didn’t have an opportunity to read it lets discuss. He writes there are only 8 franchises worth owning in the NBA and he named them. Just in case you are a fan or associated with the franchises excluded this is Simmons not me.

Are you ready, he claims the valuable franchises are Lakers, Knicks, Warriors, Bulls, Celtics, Mavs, Heat and the Suns. Why are the Clippers and Nets not included in his list of valued franchises…location, location. Simmons claims these teams are the “second” franchise in the cities they represent. Let’s check Forbes and see if they agree with the view of Simmons. According to Forbes think billions behind each of the numbers below, in addition this reflects an October 2021 publication:

Knicks $5.8
Warriors $5.6
Lakers $5.5
Bulls $3.65
Celtics $3.55
Clippers $3.33*
Nets $3.2*
Rockets $2.75*

What I find most interesting three franchises contradict Simmons belief. You might have noticed according to Forbes the Clippers, Nets and Rockets all refute the view expressed by the writer, all make the Top 8. You might also note among the missing from Forbes list are the Mavs, Heat and Suns. Who wins this match, I claim neither Simmons nor Forbes, it’s a draw. There are two final matters to consider, Simmons column was more detailed than you see here. The assessed value placed on these teams by Forbes is the amount they would be placed on the market for sales. Just in case you are interested the magazine list the Grizzlies in 30th and place a value of $1.5 billion. Who is capable of owning a sports franchise these days…only the super wealthy?

The century mark
Yesterday I mentioned Mizzou eclipsed the century mark in the SIEU game, I was sure it occurred in the past however the date was unknown. After a brief internet search came the answer, the date was 2010 and know this. I was there, whether it’s a road game or in Columbia generally my take on the Tigers is based on television coverage. For those who might not be familiar with distance Columbia Missouri is roughly 150 road miles from Kansas City which says weeknight games are difficult to impossible for me to attend.

The century mark game was played in Kansas City on November 30, 2010, at Sprint Center (T-Mobile now) and I was in attendance. The opponent Mizzou faced that evening was the Georgetown Hoyas, unfortunately although the game saw Mizzou total over 100 points it would become an overtime loss 111-102. As for the consecutive win streak I researched that too but was unable to uncover a record. I’m going to go out on a limb and say this without offering any proof. The 2022-23 season might be the first time Mizzou has begun with four consecutive wins. I challenge someone in Mizzou Nation to locate the accuracy of my statement which I believe is correct.

105
Don’t get me wrong, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville is not Kentucky, Gonzaga or any basketball power. They just happen to be on Mizzou’s schedule Tuesday evening, oh the headline! I’m sure Mizzou’s scored 100 points against an opponent I just cannot remember without research. With all the accolades regarding the Tigers there is a concern, sloppy play especially in the second half. There were far too many fouls committed by the Tigers, they must clean that part of their act up. Coach Gates played all 15 players on the roster, as for the scoring guard D’Moi Hodge led the way for the Tigers with 30 points.

Four other Tigers scored in double figures and for the fourth game in a row the team registered 20 or more assists. The shooting was outstanding for the Tigers, 59.7% from the floor and 40.9 from three. SIUE outrebounded Mizzou 35-34 however they were forced into 21 turnovers. How do these four early season wins translate to the tough, tough SEC you might ask? This Mizzou team is a collection of transfers holdovers and new guys, they must learn to play as a blended unit. They will be in for a rough time with most of the SEC teams they will face in the upcoming season, it’s good to be ingrained with a winning mentality based on the scoreboard showing you a winner.

Far too much expected
One outstanding game fails to make a career or even a season. I reported last week Emoni Bates had a monster game for Eastern Michigan when the Eagles played the University of Michigan. As reported earlier Michigan won a tightly contested match 88-83, Bates had an outstanding game shooting 63% from the floor and scoring 30 points. So what occurred in the down year Bates had at Memphis might be the next question? One thing for sure 82-year-old Memphis assistant Larry Brown loved him, he claims “Bates is very coachable.” Re-classifying saw Bates graduate from high school a year early, he was in college as a 17-year-old. Is it possible there was a maturity factor working against him?

Stan Heath Eastern Michigan coach indicates he “never attempted to recruit Bates because he believed it was an impossible task.” On the cover of Sports Illustrated as a 15-year-old and other dynamics were at work and may have impacted Bates emotional stability. Bottom line there is no doubt in my mind maybe far too much was expected from a 17-year-old. One thing for sure Bates has certainly attracted an increased number wanting to see Eastern Michigan basketball. It was said last season the school averaged about 1,600 fans per game, the first two games has witnessed 2,500 and 4,677 fans in attendance. For now we must wait for measurable progress as the Eagles battle in the Mid-American Conference. Perhaps far too much might have been expected early and there is a late maturity factor at work now.

What a weekend
Joel Embiid is stating “I’m the best center in the NBA”, that certainly might be true. His weekend was outstanding check this out. On Saturday against the Hawks Embiid had 42 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocked shots. Sunday was even better as he scored 59 points, 11 rebounds. 8 assists, 1 steal and 7 blocked shots. 101 points and 21 rebounds registered in two consecutive games says to all he intends to move to the forefront in the conversation when discussing who is the best center in the NBA. It’s too bad Embiid doesn’t have any help; the Sixers are rolling along at .500 with a 7-7 record.

Does it really matter?
The ESPN NBA front page contains an account titled, “How the Rockets, Magic or Pelicans (thanks, Lakers) could win the Wembanyama sweepstakes.” The reference is which team has the best opportunity to draft the 7-foot 4-inch youngster. I have the same question as before when Wembanayma talk first began, does it really matter where? The question is posed for several reasons, number one he’s only going to be “forced” to live in the area for 6 months. Wembanayma can live anywhere in the world even France over the next six months or after the NBA season.  Number two commercial endorsements, I’m sure the opportunities are greater in New York City and Los Angeles than anywhere in the nation but consider this. The aura of Patrick Mahomes has allowed the Chiefs quarterback to gain income from a number of commercial ventures.

I’m quite sure you’ve seen him in at least two national commercials, that fails to take into consideration the number of local commercials. I’m sure there are other advantages in being drafted in a specific area of the country, I believe the team that drafts you is actually more important. The climate is the number three factor, the three teams mentioned all have hot in summer to moderate winter temperatures year-round. Rest assured there are other factors I’ve failed to consider these three stand out for me…what do you think? There is a connected story as well. Some in the media are pointing out with the subpar play of the Lakers they could possibly be in line to draft Wembanyama but cannot. Wherever the Lakers land that pick belongs to the Pelicans, in July 2019 they surrendered a number of draft choices including the 2023 pick to secure Anthony Davis. We know what occurred next, the Lakers won the 2020 NBA Championship, for sure they were not thinking this far ahead so the issue is tenuous at best now.

Commit
DJ Wagner is a 5-star combo guard and the number three prospect in the Class of 2023. Several schools offered scholarships to this highly rated prospect; on Monday the announcement came. Wagner would be headed to Kentucky to play for John Calipari, but there is more to the story than simply committing to a school or a coach. DJ’s dad DaJuan Wagner played basketball too, he was at the University of Memphis at the time Calipari was serving as the head coach. Louisville thought it might have the inside track due to a connection as well. Milt Wagner is the father of DaJuan and grandfather of DJ; the grandfather played his college basketball at Louisville. So we see another basketball family connection, three generations playing the game.

Larry Joe
After I re-read Generational Athlete I thought, “Larry Bird is missing from the list.” Did you believe this was an oversight on my part that is hardly the case, allow a further explanation. Unlike the others Bird didn’t change how the game was played but displayed talents only a few hold. Red Auerbach saw it, that’s why he drafted Bird as a college junior. Auerbach displayed that keen eye for talent in drafting another athlete, the legendary Bill Russell. Back to Bird later first the Russell story, he drafted Russell at a time offensive centers were in vogue although Auerbach believed he might be the missing piece to Celtic success. In the 1956 draft Russell was drafted by the St. Louis Hawks with the second pick in the first round.

Russell’s draft rights would be traded to the Hawks for Ed Macauley and Cliff Hagen, the rest is Celtic and NBA history. Back to Bird, he’d received a scholarship to play basketball at the University of Indiana but dropped out due to the large enrollment. He worked municipal jobs before enrolling at much smaller Indiana State, there he began to further develop and display his basketball skill. Bird arrived in the NBA in 1978 however the shrewd Auerbach drafted him in 1977 realizing Bird wouldn’t play until the following season. Like Russell you know the balance of the story NBA Champion, NBA All Star, NBA MVP and Naismith Hall of Fame. Larry Joe Bird was not a generational player in a sense, he didn’t change the game, but the game changed him.

Not much has gone right so far
Laker Nation with not much smile about this season did. The smile occurred Sunday night that saw the team beat the Nets 116-103, a win something rare so far. How did it occur, first there was no LeBron he still dealing with injury. Street Clothes a.k.a. Anthony Davis of the Lakers led the way with 37 points, 18 rebounds and only one turnover in 34 minutes. There was help in the person of Lonnie Walker IV (25 points) and Austin Reaves with 15 points. Laker 3-point shooting which has been so horrible this season witnessed the team shooting a sizzling 40.7 behind the line for this game.

Despite the win there is nothing to indicate the downtrend for the Lakers is over, in truth they remain a work in progress. As a card-carrying member of Laker Nation I appreciate the win, despite the win I must take into consideration the drama surrounding Kyrie Irving, the disfunction of Ben Simmons. The Nets might be just a little bit better than the Lakers, but you might get an argument out of me on that statement. The Warriors what in the world is going on in San Francisco? The Lakers losing to the Kings is understandable…the defending NBA champions.

Get your facts straight please
What do you mean by the headline, I’m glad you asked…allow an explanation. When I sit down to write this blog my desire is for it to be as accurate as possible. Have there been mistakes made, of course they have. My hope is these errors have been grammatical over content. On those occasions outside sources are used I want to ensure the information is accurate. I have reported since spring the hire of Dennis Gates at Mizzou, the school’s website detailed the beginning of the basketball season on social media. The responses began almost immediately most of them positive except one I read.

The writer claimed, “I’d have no problem with the school if they recruited KC players.” My first thought where has this guy been? If you are not from this area the names will mean little to you however it’s my intention to provide them. A list containing 8 players certainly is not a large number however it provides this detail. The names listed represent KC area players who played at Mizzou over the years. If the writer had said, “significant numbers” I could concur with the statement but to say never, that’s as wrong as opening a shoe box and discovering two left shoes. This was completed from memory and brief research, there might be players omitted without intention.

All in the Family
No, this is not the ‘70’s television classic this one exists on the basketball court or rather the story is related to it. Several reading this might remember the name Bernie Bickerstaff. Bickerstaff had a number of coaching stops over his long NBA career as an assistant while others he served as head coach. Currently he’s a Senior Advisor for the NBA Cavs but this story doesn’t end there. In 2019 his son B.J. Bickerstaff was hired as an assistant coach with the Cavs.

At the time John Beilein resigned in February 2020 the team hired assistant B.J. as head coach where he presently serves. But wait there is more, B.J. has a nephew playing for Boston College, T.J. Bickerstaff is a 6-foot 9 inch forward for the Boston College Eagles. There you have it, three generations of the Bickerstaff family all connected to basketball. At this point I’m unsure if there are other family members who might be linked to the game. I conducted additional research but was unable to locate any other family members connected to basketball in some manner.

Another win
STOP, before you begin reading this report allow me to state the win is important however this is no forecast of future play (or success). Mizzou won its third game in a row Sunday afternoon beating Lindenwood University from St. Charles Missouri. Lindenwood’s made the move this season into Division I basketball, allow me to state again, I’m encouraged but not over the top with Mizzou winning 82-53. It was the manner Mizzou handled Lindenwood that was so encouraging.

Mizzou forced Lindenwood into 19 turnovers and 26.8% shooting from the floor, in addition they led in rebounds 41 to 33. The opposition point total is on a downward trend from 91 to 85 and finally this game 53 points. Further detail shows Mizzou had 22 assists proving they share the ball. Forward Kobe Brown led Mizzou in scoring with 15 points, 6 assists and 9 rebounds, he was aided by Noah Carter with 14 points. At the beginning of this account I indicated no desire to become overly excited. The non-con portion of the season is nowhere close to the rough road ahead in SEC play so I’m going to chill until Tuesday.

Where is Bronny headed
Bronny James is likely on his way to Ohio State although that’s yet to be officially confirmed. If you are unfamiliar with him, he’s the oldest son of LeBron and Savannah James. Bronny is a 6-foot 3 180-pound point guard and attends Sierra Canyon High School in Los Angeles. I can admit at one time I had reservations about his ability believing he was getting major publicity due to his famous father. All that’s in the rear-view mirror now, although Bronny is not in anyone’s Top 10, he is recognized as a legitimate prospect based on his number rating. Check out the websites below and how they see Bronny in the Class of 2023.

Generational athlete
What’s your definition of a generational athlete, mine is simple? An athlete who changes the game once they arrive in the NBA. We’ve heard the term generational applied to the 18-year-old Victor Wembanyama but he’s yet to prove himself, he’s playing pro ball but not yet in the NBA. We can say in truth some might not have changed the game as much as they influenced how it’s played. Wilt Chamberlain, he could have played in the NBA after high school he was just that good. The NBA was forced to change the lane because of one player…Chamberlain. Next up Lew Alcindor later to become Kareem Abdul Jabbar, he too changed the game. The NCAA banned the dunk shot in the college game because of one player…Abdul Jabbar. They would later discover the sky hook was even more dangerous, few opposition players were able to block it.

His name is Ervin, but we know him as Magic, the NBA had never seen a 6-foot 9-inch point guard and his passing skill it was…well magic. Air Jordan was his nickname Michael was the first name, he was able to will his team to a championship level…yes, he changed the game too. We must look at LeBron James from Akron Ohio, now in year 20 he’s continued an assault on the NBA’s all-time scoring record. He’s about to break the record set by Abdul Jabbar a record many believed would never be eclipsed. Finally this last name is going to create controversy in some circles but I’m naming Steph Curry. It’s my belief he alone is responsible for the concept of small ball, it’s what I like to refer to as an inside-out game. Some might believe the term generational might be misused in this account, generally a generation is considered 20-30 years and some of these profiled played at the same era. This is my list, it’s not necessary for you to agree with it, compose your own list based on your belief.

Call me old fashion
Folks have been gambling on sports since the beginning of time. Now it is legal but that certainly creates a problem for me, there is no requirement to contact 1-800 Bets Off for me. I’m no gambler it’s the other thing that bothers me. I read chats on the Mizzou-Lindenwood game, “They are not going to cover the spread” said one of the people on the chat line. That talk goes to the seamy side of college basketball history.

The history has seen at least two occasions when gambling made its way into the game and caused questions regarding the outcome. The 1951 season and nine years later 1960 when it shook the college game once again. Am I concerned, of course but there is nothing I can do. Sports wagering of the legal variety has exploded over the last past 2 years. Please don’t consider this a doom and gloom report if you bet games so be it. You might note again the headline and that indeed is my issue, I’m old fashion.

No requirement for civilization to stop
The title might sound a little strange, allow me to explain. I’m on a tangent, once again as a downtown baseball stadium in Kansas City is proposed and I say why? I’ve mentioned basketball arenas (Chase Center San Francisco & Intuit Dome in Inglewood) are complete or under construction without taxpayer funds. Okay you say basketball arenas don’t require near the amount of space nor dollars; I can agree. What about football stadiums such as SoFi (Rams), Gillette (Patriots) and MetLife (Giants & Jets). It’s my understanding these sports palaces were built without public funding. We are in a unique stage in this nation, all though many of us are secure financially a great number of people are suffering.

I’m not talking about the homeless although that too is a problem. There are many who could be given a title the “working” poor. They are employed, they work 5 or 6 days a week on a minimum wage job. By the time rent is paid, a car payment and day care there is very little money remaining for the family. The desire to procure even more from these families and others to build a stadium/arena for a billionaire owner is ridiculous. There is no requirement for civilization to stop just because a stadium or arena is not constructed, my desire is for progress to continue. The advancement must not come at the expense of those at or near the poverty line. We have a homeless issue as well in the nation which must be addressed. I guess I’ve come to a stopping point because sport is the diversion, it’s not going to pay our rent or car payment.

Basketball from a fans perspective

I did it, you can thank me later
You probably have a confused look on your face, “what did he do?” The Saturday edition of Off the Dribble contained a story on Emoni Bates and his basketball future. It was written Friday morning prior to the evening game and later published. It’s only one game but Bates demonstrated to me, and maybe you he might be able to play this game. I admit, I’ve remained curious regarding Emoni Bates…can he play, and better yet can he play big time basketball? It’s only one game but Friday night against Michigan was impressive despite the loss. The Michigan Wolverines won 88-83 over Bates Eastern Michigan Eagles, I was unable to see the game however the point total registered by the 18-year-old was impressive. Coach Heath is playing the 6 foot 9 Bates at shooting guard and that’s exactly what he did, shoot.

He would lead the way for the Eagles scoring 30 points while shooting 63% from the floor and 50% from three. Naturally since I didn’t see the game, I have no ability to judge the defensive side of Bates game. Hopefully at some future date I will have the opportunity to make a judgement on that portion of his effort. Is he back, is this the former high school athlete we saw on the cover of Sports Illustrated? This is really far to early to make an assessment of Bates however perhaps this is what was needed. Playing college basketball at Eastern Michigan over the spotlight of Memphis University basketball might be the change he needed, just a thought. In closing there is one area needing improvement free throws, he’s got to raise that above the 60% from the line he shoot on Friday. In my view Bates should be shooting at least 75% or above.

MIZ   ZOU
As one might say “I don’t wish to get out in front of my ski’s” but I’m impressed so far. Mizzou basketball registered two wins in the same week. On Monday they beat Southern Indiana University 97-91. For the second time in that span Mizzou managed but 8 turnovers yet almost scored 100 points. The final score in this match read Mizzou 92 Penn 85, the Tigers only registered 16 assists on Friday evening below the 20 they managed against Southern Indiana on Monday.

Okay you ask me why I’m so excited, after all Penn is not a Top 25 team. That certainly is a true statement however teams must still come prepared to play no matter the opponent. Penn certainly appeared to be a worthy competitor. How about some Mizzou defense, Penn was forced into 16 turnovers in the game. Friday’s game saw forward Noah Carter lead the way for the Tigers with 30 points and 8 rebounds. The Tigers will now prepare for a Sunday afternoon match where they will serve as host to Lindenwood University from St. Charles Missouri.

Remember Enron Field?
Corporate tie ends with sports can be rewarding and dangerous at the same time. The financial reward of course to the team or individual but what about the danger. Enron Field was the brand-new baseball stadium opened in Houston in 2000. Enron an energy financial and financial trading company signed a 30-year $100 million naming rights deal, in 2001 the company went bankrupt due to a financial scandal. All that is history now as the ballpark is known as Minute Maid Park, was there any payment received in the short space of time? That is an unknown however we might have a similar story brewing. FTX a cryptocurrency exchange has made a number of deals associated with sports teams and individuals. The founder has informed his investors the company may file for bankruptcy.

A number of the larger deals are re-naming of American Airlines Arena to FTX Arena to the tune of a reported $135 million. The Warriors have a sponsorship arrangement with the company. Having equity stake are Shaquille O’Neal, Steph Curry and Udonis Haslem. There are individuals in the NFL, Major League Baseball along with tennis and racing entities also involved. As this account was being completed additional news came forth, Miami-Dade County and the Heat are in the process of ending the naming rights agreement. The county had signed a 19-year $135 million deal, an initial payment of $14 million was paid with $5.5 million due in January. The announcement indicated signage and the name will come down by the end of next week. There are conflicting stories circulating, some indicate FTX has already declared bankruptcy while others claim it’s just a matter of time.

Do you remember
Peja Stojakovic, he spent most of 17 years in the NBA as a member of the Kings. Later Stojakovic won an NBA championship in May 2011 while a member of the Mavs, in December of the year he retired citing back and neck injuries. I wasn’t sure if Peja returned to Croatia after his playing days. Recently we became acquainted with Peja’s son Andrej who is a 6-foot 7 inch small forward, currently he attends Jesuit in Carmichael California. This week the youngster announced he will be attending Stanford University which proves two things. He can hoop and he also has brains to match as he will enroll at the “Harvard of the west.” Andrej is ranked 24th in ESPN 100 for the Class of 2023, although he was born in Greece he decided in favor of an American college.

What do you think?
An author writing in a dot.com site from December 2020 wrote “The 25 Sport Franchises That Have Always Been Losers”. Included in his list was the Kansas City Royals baseball team but this is a basketball blog. The writer chose 7 NBA teams however I might take issue with a few of his selections. The Pelicans, Knicks, Hornets, Wizards and Wolves being noted as losers I get it, as for the others I could question them being included. As an example, the Suns have suffered down seasons over the course of their history, but I would have difficulty referring to them as “losers.” Not only have the Suns played competitive basketball in the recent past they are a good team at present.

A brief check of Nets history indicates the team’s won 1,577 games losing 2,127 however 5 of the last 10 years the team’s experienced a +500 record. The Nets played for the NBA Championship once as the New Jersey Nets, since the Brooklyn move the team’s play has improved slightly. What I find most interesting while this writer chose to include the Nets in his account, he failed to include the Clippers. My question might be at what point did he begin checking the Clippers and why he failed to include them on his list. Despite the fact the Clippers are quite good currently it’s not always been that way, over the team’s history they have won 1,748 games and lost 2,448. Naturally if this is his belief so be it however, I disagree with a few of his selections.
