Get a life Doug
Doug Gottlieb of CBS Sports is one of those media types I’ve rarely covered in the past. This time it’s for a story he wrote for CBS Sports.com that begs the question is he reporting facts or writing from a point of residual anger. Prior to the UCLA-Kentucky game he said he no longer believed UCLA should be included in the discussion of elite programs such as Kentucky, Kansas, and Duke. In fairness Gottlieb had no way to determine UCLA would beat Kentucky especially at Rupp Arena. Prior to the game I concluded it was likely the Bruins had little opportunity to win away from Pauley Pavilion.
This is the interesting portion of the story a fan responded to Gottlieb’s UCLA story claiming the basketball player turned broadcaster continues to hold a grudge against UCLA. He claimed Gottlieb was a highly regarded high school player in Southern California and wanted to attend UCLA, the problem the school failed to offer him a scholarship. Gottlieb began college play at Notre Dame and concluded at Oklahoma State. I began researching Gottlieb’s bio since I was only familiar with him from his days at Oklahoma State. I located a rebuttal story in Bruinsnation dated March 15, 2015 which corroborates information the email writer listed.
In this account the writer claims Gottlieb went on a similar rant last year stating UCLA shouldn’t have received an NCAA invite. Doug Gottlieb is 40 years old now “enough water has gone under the bridge” for him to cease with the hate. I would be highly suspect of any commentary Gottlieb offers in the future on anything connected with UCLA basketball. UCLA is 10-0 as this is written it’s likely they won’t go through the season undefeated however UCLA basketball is top tier at least for this season. The school is second in the AP Top 25 and USA Today Coaches Poll. Doesn’t matter whether Gottlieb agrees or not the school is near the top of the college basketball map.
I’m none compliant
Ignore idiotic comments by media members; concentrate on working on the blog that‘s what I said I’m violating my promise this morning. After listening to a statement made by Mike Golic on Mike & Mike I must respond. It’s clear to me Golic is a Kobe hater despite the fact the Laker is now retired. If Kobe was such a terrible teammate I guess Golic is unfamiliar with a guy named Michael Jordan. Everything I’ve read and heard indicate MJ was a demanding teammate. Golic stick to NFL football something you should know about and forget the basketball.
A win is a win is a win
William Jewell traveled 25 miles on I-435 South for a butt-whipping. Jewell is an NAIA Division II school located in Liberty (MO). Final score UMKC 93 William Jewell 71 as UMKC won its 7th game of the young season. A win against an NAIA school certainly won’t garner an NCAA invite, a win over Drake plus a close loss to Creighton (89-82) aids the relevancy of your program.
Leading scorer Martez Harrison suspension finally becomes permanent as the school announced he’d been dismissed from the team. After conducting an investigation UMKC concluded Harrison violated a portion of NCAA Title IX. I had to check and Title IX is the education amendment, privacy issues prevent UMKC from indicating which portion Harrison violated. Title IX is quite extensive so we are left to our own devices to guess what might have occurred. According to the Kansas City Star Harrison remains a student at the school.
The fix
We hear it all the time from fans and the media, too many inaccurate calls and too many whistles in the college and NBA game. Okay we’ll address the issue instead of 3-person crews we’ll use 4 and 5-person officiating teams. Seriously folks the NBA-D League is to begin experimenting with this model December 26.
It’s not intended to be a permanent fix however is it really a fix? We went from two person crews to three because the complaint was calls were missed. I believe we can agree officials miss calls however adding a 4th or 5th person is suppose to be a solve-all? I could foresee even more whistle blowing; after all “If I’m on the floor I’ve got to make some calls.”

Numbers look good
After Larry Brown abruptly left SMU I haven’t checked the program until now. I’d forgotten there remained a semi-local connection on the teams’ roster. Power forward Semi Ojeleye from Ottawa (KS) remains at SMU. Ottawa is about an hour drive southwest of Kansas City (MO), Ojeleye graduated from Ottawa High in 2013 and set a State of Kansas boys scoring record. He chose Duke and got lost (my belief) in the numbers.
The shorten version Ojeleye left for SMU to play for Coach Larry Brown, he would red-shirt last season preparing for his junior year. He’s led the way to a 7-3 record as the team leader in scoring (17.8 ppg) and tied for the team lead in rebounds with 7.6 per game. This is no prediction of future stardom however once Ojeleye “escaped” from Duke he’s at least to date proven he’s a solid Division I talent.
A muddled picture
Where ever one chooses to live usually there are few complaints otherwise you‘d move elsewhere. Kansas City (MO) I was born and here grew up here and plan on remaining here the remainder of my life. The city and metro offer much of what I desire for entertainment and living purposes. No concrete jungles here no need to venture far there is plenty of green inside the city.
The city and metro face the same problems as other urban areas of the nation inner city blight and crime but overall Kansas City is a good place to live. As for the sports picture that might be slightly different story, as a kid I would hear “Kansas City is a great sports town.” I might add it’s great if you have a local connection; Kansas and Mizzou at the college level have no issues filling Sprint Center near capacity.
In 1989 the McDonalds Game was held in Kansas City at Kemper Arena, 9,419 folks attended in a building that seats 17,000. That game featured Shaquille O’Neal playing for the West Team and Bobby Hurley playing for the East squad, MVP Shaq led the way as the West won 112-103. Shaq was headed for LSU in the fall and Hurley to Duke.
The CBE Hall of Fame Classic held every year at Sprint Center seems to suffer attendance issues unless Kansas, Kansas State or Mizzou are in the field. The NFL Chiefs and the baseball Royals popularity totally dominate the sports picture in this metro of 2.2 million. As for the professional teams we are consumed by Royals baseball in the spring and summer, Chiefs football in the fall and winter.
California trifecta
Chino Hills is located in San Bernardo County some 40 miles from Staples Center. Chino Hills is a city of 75,000+ people and home to the Ball family. The eldest of the brothers Lonzo is a 6-6 point guard; he’s a freshman at UCLA but is likely headed to the NBA next season. The middle brother LiAngelo is a 6-5 shooting guard at Chino Hills High and a senior, the point guard is little brother LaMelo stands 6-1.
LaMelo is the youngest brother and also the smallest however don’t allow his height to fool you. He’s likely to continue growing and at least be near the stature of his brothers. Chino Hills beat Las Vegas Gorman High on Friday evening 84-70. As for Chino Hills they were the 2016 Open Division State Tournament in California finishing the season with a
35-0 record. The win on Friday gave Chino Hills a 6-0 record in this early season. Dad LaVar claims Chino Hills will go undefeated once again this season.

Two weeks ago I wrote my belief the comments he made about LeBron James and his business associates was misplaced. Why this topic now, the story continues as one former player after another provides his view of Phil Jackson. Carmelo Anthony’s name has been drawn into the conversation. It’s Sunday evening December 11th and Phil Jackson remains a story although I question why. Phil Jackson is not going to apologize for his miss-statement so there I said it.

Clippers forward Blake Griffin is M.I.A. in Kia automobile commercials so far this season. I found them very entertaining however this is one is even funnier than any of the Griffin

It is not unusual in the NBA for a player to register a double-double. Most instances its points scored and rebounds. As for assists double digit assists are not that uncommon either, what is uncommon is the number. 20 or more assists has been recorded several times the latest Saturday night. Clipper point guard Chris Paul score 20 points and had 20 assists as his team registered a 133-105 victory over the Pelicans.
Kansas City-NBA connection
Unless you are fan of the Miami Heat Willie Reed is an unknown name. Reed doesn’t play much as a back-up power forward/center. The 6-10 Reed played his college ball at St. Louis University his high school ball at Bishop Miege in suburban Roland Park (KS).
You’ve got to want the ball
In basketball it aids a player greatly being tall; he’s got a natural advantage in rebounding the basketball. Often its not height alone, there exists a number of 7 foot NBA players have been average to below average rebounding the ball. I’m not going to name names or point fingers you know them already. It was said Dennis Rodman in practice would study the angles the basketball bounced off the rim. At 6 foot 7 and 220 pounds Rodman led the NBA in rebounding 7 years an unlikely feat for an “average” size NBA player. Russell Westbrook of the Thunder is only 6 foot 3 but has a double-double almost every game he plays.
Westbrook is aggressive which aids him but he must also study angles because no player
6-3 can continually be in double figures rebounding. I mentioned the tall guys who don’t or can’t rebound affectively how about the Big Men who can. We can count Hassan Whiteside, Andrew Drummond, Dwight Howard and DeAndre Jordan just to name a few current day players who rebound the ball well. As for a different time there were fewer NBA teams during the ‘50’s and ‘60’s the period Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell played. The 7-1 Chamberlain averaged 22.9 rebounds a game for his career as for Russell he was a close second with 22.5. Those types of rebound numbers are never likely to occur again in the NBA.

“You paid what?”
I’ve stated time and time I find it difficult to discuss the salaries of athletes. For one I’ve held a long-time belief 99% are over-paid compared to educators, police, fire and EMT. Athletes fall in the realm of entertainers although I certainly consider them professionals. Few are capable of walking in to an NFL or NBA training camp and performing at the level required. Now the disclaimer is out of the way let’s discuss Laker center Timofey Mozgov. There was loud screaming by many in the NBA community when the Lakers signed Mozgov over the summer. The signing in many minds was the dollar amount and length of the contract four years. I will admit I had reservations about Mozgov not the money or length of the contract I was more concerned if he could play.
I have been critical of decisions made by the Laker front office but consider this. Bear with me on this account; it just could have occurred this way. On the June 23rd NBA Draft they were able to draft 19-year old Ivica Zubac from Croatia. Knowing it might take some years for the youngster to adjust to NBA play we’ll get a center we believe can “stand in the gap” until Zubac is ready. To date (middle December) Mozgov has filled that need adequately. I’ll repeat an earlier statement, he’s not going to make fans forget the play of Wilt, Kareen or Shaq. He’s not going to wow anyone with his basketball acuity but he can play the game. I’m unsure if it was Byron Scott’s offense but Roy Hibbert looked totally lost at times last season Mozgov is a baby step or two better.
I‘m guilty but so are you
We award words of praise to indicate a persons worth, we especially are guilty in the world of sports. Superstar is most common but not the only one used. Mavs owner Mark Cuban has painted himself into a corner once again, he says: “Russell Westbrook still won’t be a superstar unless Thunder win.” Cuban says a superstar leads his team he says the Thunder missed the playoffs in 2014-15 when Durant missed much of the season. Sometimes Cuban has been guilty of sticking his foot in his mouth sometimes he speaks the truth. I have my own opinion of Westbrook but defer to you, is Cuban correct in his assessment?
“Why do they ask such dumb questions? “
I believe Pelican Coach Alvin Gentry might say to himself “Why did he ask me that question? “ The visiting Sixers had not won a road game in like forever (actually it was 23 consecutive). Playing in the Smoothie King Center I’m sorry the name still solicits a laugh from me the Sixers won the game. It was the post game press conference that becomes this story. A member of the media asked Alvin Gentry (paraphrase) “If he was concerned about his job security.” I thought to myself what an incredibly dumb question to ask after a tough home loss.
Where other than coaching (any sport) is the quality and level of your task visible for the entire world to critique. The coach or manager is always scrutinized on the manner they handle game management. The fault often lies with the media, in an attempt to write a story they are often guilty of becoming the story by asking provocative questions. In this instance I’m sure the media person did not stop to take into consideration the quality of the team other than Anthony Davis the Pelicans are not very well-stocked with quality players.

Kentucky’s John Calipari is a lighting rod of controversy. Cynics question; “How is he getting all that talent at Kentucky? “ The other issue connected to talent is he seems unconcerned if a player is there one year or four. There are even questions if he’s a good X and O coach, you name it somebody has a negative to describe Coach Cal not me. Let‘s just say I don‘t know the man but have admired his work from afar. As for the talent is he’s gone on record; “If you want to take 30 shots a game, your not playing for me.” He’s not always coached in this manner the other stops at UMass and Memphis was different.
At Kentucky he’s become a one n done specialist getting kids to buy in to his program because they believe he’s the best coach to get me into the NBA. We believed Anthony Davis had talent, we thought Boogie Cousins had skill; we witnessed a glimpse of what Karl-Anthony Towns could do. Just as skilled is the shooter Devin “Lights out” Booker or point guard John Wall. All left early for the NBA and became even better in the NBA; on second thought maybe they were just as good at Kentucky. Calipari’s system rotating players in and out didn’t allow us to see the potential of these and other Wildcats.

Revisionist history
The Chris Paul trade is history now, are as they say “water under the bridge” No need of a revisit----well maybe. How about just a brief departure to the past. Former Commissioner David Stern remembers the trade far differently than me and maybe you too. Stern is claiming there never was a trade on the table to the Lakers involving Paul. I’m not going to bother rehashing his words read it for yourself if you care.
He’s on the way
Lauri Markkanen is headed to the NBA----maybe, I’m going to leave myself an out on this one saying he might remain at Arizona another year. Oh, you are unfamiliar with the name Markkanen allow a brief explanation. He’s a 7-foot 230 pound power forward freshman from Finland who is scoring at a 17.8 ppg along with 7.2 rebounds. Markkanen’s dad played a year for Roy Williams at Kansas. NBADraft.com’s mock draft has him listed as a mid-first round choice while DraftExpress.net list him as their number 8 choice in their mock draft.

Bet you didn’t realize from 2014 up through 2016 59 high school players from Canada have journeyed south of the border to play for colleges in the U.S. That fact alone should detail for you the growth of round ball in Canada. As I’ve stated previously basketball will never eclipse hockey in popularity with our northern neighbor but the growth of the game in Canada is quite evident especially around the Toronto area.
Russell Westbrook’s name was dropped into the discussion too on leading the NBA in points and assists. I have my doubts if he or James Harden can accomplish the feat. We discussed previously Nate “Tiny” Archibald playing for the Kings in 1972-73 scored 34 points a game and dished out 11.4 assists. Truth is Tiny was about the only offense the team had; they scored 8822 points that season with him contributing 2719.
The “Boys Club” of NBA TV needs to diversify its talent; Kristen Ledlow is the lone female personality for the network. Okay there have been former WNBA players serving as apparently none have been permanent hires. Currently Ledlow serves as co-host for the weekly NBA Inside Stuff program along side Grant Hill and serves as studio host on a weekly basis. In high school Ledlow played volleyball and basketball and has a sports media background prior to being hired by NBA TV. Practice, practice and more practice, my basketball career never extended past the playground so I can’t fully relate. I continue to have a concern regarding poor free-throw shooting; it might be less evident in the NBA but at the high school and collegiate level but it even exists at the higher level. As for me if I were still a player after I finish the coaches drills I’d work on those portions of the game that are not working well. If I’m a fairly good shooter but average to poor on the line why am I not practicing free-throws? It seems “hero-ball” is more important especially at the high school or college level. Think how many times the outcome of a game might have been changed if only a crucial free-throw had been sunk.
Revisionist history
The Chris Paul trade is history now, are as they say “water under the bridge” No need of a revisit----well maybe. How about just a brief departure to the past. Former Commissioner David Stern remembers the trade far differently than me and maybe you too. Stern is claiming there never was a trade on the table to the Lakers involving Paul. I’m not going to bother rehashing his words read it for yourself if you care.

Lauri Markkanen is headed to the NBA----maybe, I’m going to leave myself an out on this one saying he might remain at Arizona another year. Oh, you are unfamiliar with the name Markkanen allow a brief explanation. He’s a 7-foot 230 pound power forward freshman from Finland who is scoring at a 17.8 ppg along with 7.2 rebounds. Markkanen’s dad played a year for Roy Williams at Kansas. NBADraft.com’s mock draft has him listed as a mid-first round choice while DraftExpress.net list him as their number 8 choice in their mock draft.

Bet you didn’t realize from 2014 up through 2016 59 high school players from Canada have journeyed south of the border to play for colleges in the U.S. That fact alone should detail for you the growth of round ball in Canada. As I’ve stated previously basketball will never eclipse hockey in popularity with our northern neighbor but the growth of the game in Canada is quite evident especially around the Toronto area.
Russell Westbrook’s name was dropped into the discussion too on leading the NBA in points and assists. I have my doubts if he or James Harden can accomplish the feat. We discussed previously Nate “Tiny” Archibald playing for the Kings in 1972-73 scored 34 points a game and dished out 11.4 assists. Truth is Tiny was about the only offense the team had; they scored 8822 points that season with him contributing 2719.
The “Boys Club” of NBA TV needs to diversify its talent; Kristen Ledlow is the lone female personality for the network. Okay there have been former WNBA players serving as apparently none have been permanent hires. Currently Ledlow serves as co-host for the weekly NBA Inside Stuff program along side Grant Hill and serves as studio host on a weekly basis. In high school Ledlow played volleyball and basketball and has a sports media background prior to being hired by NBA TV. Basketball from a fans perspective
He’s correct
Charles Barkley says dumb things at times, anytime he makes a statement I agree with I will say loudly----yes. Last week Barkley looking at the Western Conference said; “I could see the Clippers coming out of the West look they won’t have to face the Spurs and Warriors to advance.” Barkley is correct however there is a key to consider the Clippers better hope somebody beats the Warriors. It appears clear at least to this date the Clippers have been unable to accomplish the task.
It was reported and you can check me out the Clippers have lost seven (7) games in a row to the Warriors. Wednesday night was not no different as the Warriors ran over and around the Clippers to a 115-98 victory. Someone other than me once said; “It’s no rivalry when you never beat the other guy.” I almost forgot the Clippers did lead in one area----technical fouls, they had three to the Warriors 0.
It’s still Missouri
Kansas basketball marked a win on the date they scheduled the UMKC game. Turns out there was no way they would waltz into Allen Fieldhouse and beat Kansas, final score Kansas 105 UMKC 62 on Tuesday. The initials UMKC stands for the University of MISSOURI-Kansas City. This is not the Columbia campus however it’s still affiliated with the University of Missouri campus system. I’ve mentioned on so many occasions Bill Self refuses to play the University of Missouri at Columbia but no problem scheduling a game with UMKC.
I checked the records; Kansas played UMKC in 2001, 2007, 2008 and 2016. The games have all been played at Allen Fieldhouse which indicates a large payout for UMKC which is not the issue in my opinion. The issue in my mind is Bill Self and his damn refusal to play Mizzou in non-conference. I guess I’m barking up the wrong tree with my observation, Self has no issue playing in-state Division II Pittsburg State but refuses to play Division I Wichita State 175 miles and less than 3 hours drive time.
Speculation
We speculate or try to predict the future at times. The only area I believe might prove dangerous is at the casino and the stock market. My speculation is less dangerous, I attempt to gain knowledge of future basketball talent sometimes even at the high school level. I’ve speculated if a certain player makes it to the NBA and second to that if he becomes a star. Naturally I cannot predict a devastating injury which might cause a potential career to vanish. I first became aware of Julius Randle, Boogie Cousins, Kyrie Irving and Blake Griffin just to name a few while they were in high school. I could also add Jabari Parker and Andrew Wiggins to the list which is profiled below.
ESPN.com speculated on which player would have a better NBA career Jabari Parker of the Bucks or Andrew Wiggins of the Wolves. Both arrived in the NBA from the 2014 draft, an early injury caused Parker to only play 25 games his rookie year. Who’s likely to have a better NBA career is an impossible question to answer. I can only detail differences in their game. Wiggins a small forward is more a high flyer than power forward Parker. Wear and tear on the body over the course of an NBA career is the key for both. Players grow their games but coaches can also impact an athlete’s development, which issue along with the possibility of a major injury. My conclusions both are on the same plane currently and likely into the future, what do you think?

An acquaintance said; “You need to see _________ he’s really good, I think he’s gonna be an NBA player.” I tuned into the game expecting to be thrilled and boy was I let down, this guy had a terrible game. I thought “I trust the acquaintance so maybe I need to see him at another time.” That’s what occurred and the player did end up being drafted and played several years in the NBA. As for Wednesday night I’ve mentioned it’s difficult for us in the Midwest and East Coast time zones to view Pacific Standard Time games.
The Gonzaga-Washington game started at 10:00 p.m. Central. Washington Freshmen Markelle Fultz is projected to be a top five pick should he leave for the NBA in 2017. I missed the early portion of the game watching the Warriors beat down the Clippers. This one was also a beat-down and Fultz had a terrible game. The 6-4 point guard scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds but shot a poor .385 from the floor. Fultz season numbers including this game; 23 ppg, 7.1 rebounds and 5.9 assists while shooting .508 from the floor. Despite his poor shooting from the field in the Gonzaga game he could stand to work on his free-throw shooting (.656).

Failure to comply
This time the violation is for not providing a winning basketball program over decades. Drake of the Missouri Valley is the school in question we are discussing. Allow me to state upfront I’ve not followed the program closely however I’m aware of a small portion of the school’s basketball resume. Coach Ray Giacoletti resigned on Wednesday after 3 seasons and a 1-7 start in 2016-17. We must travel back to 2007-08 to uncover a winner; under former Coach Keno Davis Drake registered a 28-5 overall record and 15-3 in the conference, that’s the high water mark.
Years prior it was it was 1969-70 (22-7) and 1970-71 (21-8) the last time Drake had impressive back to back winning seasons. There were winning seasons however they contained double digit losses. This is the tough Mo Valley Conference home to Creighton, Northern Iowa, and Wichita State always competitive programs. Why has Drake been the doormat of the league for such a lengthy time-period you ask? I don’t have the answer however it’s my belief the administration and athletic department have no desire to win. They would deny my last statement however can they truly deny the poor record over the decades?
This is the story I know
I’ve never visited Seattle or the Pacific Northwest I can only speak through what I believe to be true. We reported Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson added his name to the Hansen group attempting to secure an NBA team. The email responses begin flying in, I didn’t bother to determine whether they were from Seattle or not. More than one writer indicated Seattle “had problems” attracting fans to games. There is a little more to the story than just the attendance there was also Key Arena being inadequate. The sale of the Sonics was approved by the NBA on October 24, 2006 a year later November 2, 2007 to be exact the team announced they intended to move the team to Oklahoma City.
The 2006-07 season was played under a cloud of apprehension although there were overtures made the new owners for an arena they were rebutted. Fans were aware Clay Bennett lived in Oklahoma City, they were also aware the Hornets played in Oklahoma City displaced by Hurricane Katrina for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 season. The following season Seattle fans were aware the team was moving after the season. Tell me especially the 2006-07 season fans are responsible for paying their hard earned finances to see a team leaving the area. The same situation occurred in Kansas City, fans were aware that last year the team was leaving for Sacramento. If you attended a Kings game that spring you could throw a rock at an angle and not hit any fans.

Last year I receive plenty of grief at the barber shop from the usual gathering. The barbers plus many of the regulars have long realized my allegiance to the Lakers. Allow me to travel back to 2015 every mock draft I saw and every media conversation indicated the Lakers with the second pick would choose Jahlil Okafor in the draft. It was clear to all concerned the Wolves with the first pick would likely choose Karl-Anthony Towns which later proved correct. As for the Lakers Commissioner Silver announced; “With the second pick in the 2015 NBA Draft the Los Angeles Lakers choose D’Angelo Russell from Ohio State.” I almost fell out of my chair believing the Lakers needed the 6-11 270 pound Okafor to anchor the middle. The barber shop grief continued as Russell first fell out with former Coach Byron Scott, it continued with the Swaggy P. fiasco.
Despite the erratic season there were occasional bright spots exhibited by Russell. Perhaps over time Okafor’s game will change however he’s proven to be moderate in rebounding the ball despite his bulk. He’s much slower up and down the court than many thought he’d be. He does have an effective offensive game but this season his hold-over injury and the emergence of Joel Embiid has left him a back-up center. I’ve stated for months now the three-headed center of the Sixers will be history soon, someone is traded. As for the 6-4 Russell although injured as this is written has become a leader. He doesn’t have all the skills required however his ceiling is far higher (in my view) than Okafor. As for the center the Lakers needed they drafted him in the second round of the 2016 draft, Ivica Zubac. He occupies a spot on the bench adjusting to the NBA after arriving from Croatia.

Wonder if she‘s still upset?
The Warriors-Pacers game on Monday was noteworthy, Klay Thompson’s 60 point total was outstanding. His single game score places him in first-class territory. Wilt Chamberlain, Bernard King, Larry Bird, Allen Iverson, Tom Chambers and Kobe Bryant accomplished the feat. Wilt and Kobe totaled 60 points scored on more than one occasion. The match between the two teams reminded me of another story it was March 13th 2012 to be exact.
On that date the Warriors traded guard Monta Ellis to the Pacers. Players are often upset by trades and fans as well. I don’t believe I ever remember reading of a front office being in tizzy due to a player trade. The fiancée of Warrior owner Joe Lacob was upset with the development, it seems she and Monta Ellis’s wife had become good friends. That was 2012 and the latest information I could uncovered they remain unmarried, they are still a couple.
CORRECTION: It was pointed out I left Michael Jordan off the list of 60+ individual game scorers. My mistake and sorry MJ, that's probably the first time in his life he's been overlooked except when he was cut from his high school team as a sophomore.

“A situation in which one can’t win” is the dictionary definition of the term. This is not a case of one individual versus a gathering of souls. Michael Jordan received accolades for his play on the court but off the court was a different matter. He was criticized in some circles for failing to address civic or political issues.
LeBron James publicly supported Hillary Clinton for president, word spread recently LeBron and a number of the Cavs would not stay at the Trump SoHo hotel when the Cavs visit this week. In came the emails critical of LeBron although he said absolutely nothing to any media members. There you go; a situation in which you cannot win, if you address an issue you are criticized if you ignore an issue you are also criticized.
Lowered expectations
The 2016-17 Wolves were over-flowing with young talent; they were going to make a great deal of noise this NBA season. The Wolves had back to back Rookies of the Year in Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns. They also had vital talented pieces in Zach LaVine and Ricky Rubio. They drafted point guard Kris Dunn from Providence. For the most part the Wolves were a young team with a few veteran teammates. Tom Thibodeau former Bulls coach was hired to lead them.
A funny thing (not comical) occurred, as this is written the Wolves are sitting in last place in the Northwest Division of the NBA. The Wolves have registered a 6-14 record which is suprising to most including me. I can admit I have no first-hand information in fact I’ve only seen them play twice thus far. I’m offering no reason why the bad play just why? At the same time there remains ample opportunity for the “young” Wolves to make some noise however they must get started soon.
Overnight sensation
There’s a saying “An overnight sensation is someone becoming famous in a short space of time.” In reality it’s often several years before someone gains celebrity status. That’s doesn’t quite fit the case of Heat center Hassan Whiteside we knew his name ahead of last seasons break-out year. Whiteside was rated the 87th prospect in the nation by Rivals in the Class of 2009. He chose to attend Marshall University although Charlotte, South Carolina, Kentucky, Auburn and Ole Miss had expressed interest in him. Its likely Whiteside would have remained at Marshall if not for his coach. Coach Donnie Jones left Marshall for UCF after Whiteside’s freshmen year.
Whiteside decided in favor of the NBA and declared for the 2010 draft but was not ready to play at the NBA level. He was extremely raw and in addition suffered from maturity issues. Drafted by the Kings in the same draft as Boogie Cousins he bounced around before becoming a starter mid-way through last season but continued to deal with his maturity. After he was suspended by the NBA Dwayne Wade last season took him aside and detailed how important it was for Hassan to remain on the floor for the Heat. It would appear at this point the Heat are committed to Whiteside and he appears content. His future is unlimited as the Heat build around him.

The Wolves had back to back Rookies of the Year in Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns. They also had vital talented pieces in Zach LaVine and Ricky Rubio. They drafted point guard Kris Dunn from Providence. For the most part the Wolves were a young team with a few veteran teammates. Tom Thibodeau former Bulls coach was hired to lead them.
A funny thing (not comical) occurred, as this is written the Wolves are sitting in last place in the Northwest Division of the NBA. The Wolves have registered a 6-14 record which is suprising to most including me. I can admit I have no first-hand information in fact I’ve only seen them play twice thus far. I’m offering no reason why the bad play just why? At the same time there remains ample opportunity for the “young” Wolves to make some noise however they must get started soon.
Overnight sensation
There’s a saying “An overnight sensation is someone becoming famous in a short space of time.” In reality it’s often several years before someone gains celebrity status. That’s doesn’t quite fit the case of Heat center Hassan Whiteside we knew his name ahead of last seasons break-out year. Whiteside was rated the 87th prospect in the nation by Rivals in the Class of 2009. He chose to attend Marshall University although Charlotte, South Carolina, Kentucky, Auburn and Ole Miss had expressed interest in him. Its likely Whiteside would have remained at Marshall if not for his coach. Coach Donnie Jones left Marshall for UCF after Whiteside’s freshmen year.
Whiteside decided in favor of the NBA and declared for the 2010 draft but was not ready to play at the NBA level. He was extremely raw and in addition suffered from maturity issues. Drafted by the Kings in the same draft as Boogie Cousins he bounced around before becoming a starter mid-way through last season but continued to deal with his maturity. After he was suspended by the NBA Dwayne Wade last season took him aside and detailed how important it was for Hassan to remain on the floor for the Heat. It would appear at this point the Heat are committed to Whiteside and he appears content. His future is unlimited as the Heat build around him.

Tall point guards
In an earlier time even in the NBA point guards were on the small size, most stood between 5-7 and 6-2. Oscar Robertson at 6-5 was the same height and weight of most small forwards of that time period. A few years later Magic Johnson would break the mold when he arrived in 1979 standing 6 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 225 pounds. Up to that time he may have been the tallest point guard in NBA history. Magic was taller than many small forwards and the same height as a number of power forwards.
In 1993 the Magic drafted 6-7 Penny Hardaway who was quite successful until injuries beset him and curtailed his career. The tall point guard is not that unusual anymore, so Brett Brown’s statement is not exactly surprising based on the player he’s discussing and the players passing skills. Ben Simmons who stands 6 feet 10 inches and 240 pounds will become the Sixers point guard once he returns from injury. This may not prove to be a permanent move so we must wait until January to see if Brown follows through on his plan.
There is no question the passing skills of Simmons its defense that might cause problems for him. Small speedy point guards often present problems for taller point guards, Magic Johnson, Penny and others could do whatever they wanted on offense seeing over the top of the defense. On defense they had problems with the “Isiah Thomas” type speedy point guard. The Sixer lineup should be interesting if this change is implemented. Technically the Bucks Giannis Antetokounmpo with point guard skills is a small forward but stands 6-11.

If that’s the case he’s still growing because when he was drafted in the NBA from Kansas he was listed as an even 7 feet. Despite the optimism of Embiid the Sixers are still in last place. Where is Ben Simmons when you need him?

My brother once held an 11-7 job and one day in conversation he informed me he usually didn’t go to bed until 12:00 or 1:00 p.m. I ask the question; “Aren’t you ready for bed when you get home?” His response caused me to laugh out loud; “You don’t go to be bed when you get home at 6:00 p.m. do you?” So it is with the 24-hour marathon of college basketball on ESPN. There are individuals it’s likely beneficial to a number of folks to witness a live game rather than one recorded.
Captain Obvious might be only familiar to those with an American television feed. The commercials feature an actor usually in a military type uniform informing us the advantage of using Hotels.com when traveling. The actor is white and James Harden is black however both have extensive beards. For me instead of the “The Beard” James Harden will now be known as “Capt Obvious” to me.

ESPN.com detailed a video history of the Lakers downfall in the standings titled; “Lakers dynasty derailed“. One of the several issues mentioned was the trade for Chris Paul which was voided by the league. For those who might be unfamiliar with the story or have forgotten a quick review. Chris Paul then playing for the Hornets (Pelicans now) was about to become a free-agent rather than lose him with no compensation a trade was worked out with the Lakers.
The Lakers would send Lamar Odom, Luis Scola, Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic would have come from the Rockets for Paul. This portion of the story is strictly New York Times December 8, 2011. Veteran NBA writer Howard Beck indicates “The trade became null and void because of one owner. He claims Dan Gilbert (yes that Dan Gilbert) wrote a letter to Commissioner Stern complaining about the trade. Gilbert wanted Stern to call for a league vote on whether the trade should be approved.”
As for my part I could uncover no further information as to a league vote. Commissioner Stern did step in and nullify the trade. This one fact alone did not cause the slid of this legendary franchise to lottery level but it certainly didn’t help. I repeat again I will give David Stern his props he really grew the NBA during his tenure. The trade that never occurred will always be a millstone around David Stern’s neck to me.

Basketball from a fans perspective
Friends
The headline is not related to the long-running NBC television series or the 1984 recording by the hip-hop group Whodini. This is the Dwayne Wade/LeBron James friends bond that’s developed over the years. The friendship of these two might have been established prior to them becoming teammates however I don‘t remember maybe you do. Their friendship has continued despite the fact neither no longer plays for the Heat. There are some who believe in “enemies” on the basketball court and that’s okay too.
The question becomes what’s wrong with friendship, back in the day Piston Isiah Thomas and Laker Magic Johnson established a friendship bond. It’s been reported Bill Russell would often have dinner with Wilt Chamberlain and vice versa the night before they battled one another on the basketball court. The dinner tab would be paid by which ever player was at home. These friendships are likely in the forefront because these are All-Star athletes. I’d bet money (if I were a gambler) there are reserve players who have similar friendships. Free-agency and trades have likely placed friends on opposing teams.
‘‘Those Old Kentucky Blues’’
I attended a funeral which didn’t allow me to see UCLA-Kentucky from the beginning. The Kentucky Wildcats had a funeral too only it wasn’t a death although it might have felt like it. The portion of the game I was able to see reminded me of a heavyweight championship fight. Every time UCLA delivered what they believed was a knockout punch Kentucky came roaring back. Most interesting the game was played in front of 20,000 plus screaming, yelling Kentucky fans. UCLA actually had more turnovers than Kentucky so it was poor execution by Kentucky that led to their downfall. Number 11 UCLA traveled to Rupp Arena and won the heavyweight bout 97-92.

The Lakers are considered a young team but are they really that young? The starters (at least for now) are Nick Young aka Swaggy P who turned 31 in June is the shooting guard and 20 year old D’Angelo Russell at the point. Luol Deng at the small forward is 31 while forward Julius Randle turned 22 at the end of November. Starting center Timofey Mozgoz had his 30th birthday over the summer. Williams (age 30) Clarkson (age 24), Ingram (age 19) Black (age 25) and Nance Jr. (age 23) are the top reserves. The players noted average 25.5 years of age which might be young compared to several other NBA teams. The Lakers roster consists of several older players not factored in to our number however to date they haven’t played any significant minutes.
You know I’ve complained loudly about what I believe was dysfunction in the Lakers front office. I’m unsure now if the Laker front office is moving in the same direction however I can point to at least one NBA front office worst than the Lakers. Incidentally it’s in California too, from Los Angeles you travel up I-5 to the state capital city of Sacramento. The Kings likely fail to place a name plate above the coach’s door they come and go so frequently. Coach Dave Joerger is the 9th coach the team has hired since the 2005-2006 season. At least one coach was an interim hire however that’s quite a list don’t you think?
I’ve mentioned this previously but thought it was worth a re-visit. We don’t allow athletes to be inducted into Halls of Fame until they retire. Shouldn’t the same requirement be in place for coaches? Please don’t consider this an indictment of the coach however the programs at North Carolina, Syracuse and Louisville have been under investigation for various infractions over the last few years. Do these incidents reflect on the legacy of Coaches’ Roy Williams, Jim Boeheim and Rick Pitino? Several coaches are in the Naismith and College Hall of Fame but were honored after their coaching careers. Should they cease considering working coaches for Hall of Fame entry?

Victorious at Creighton and now Oregon, if given time by the forces at Kansas State Altman’s record while head coach there might have been much better. In the latest news affecting the “Invisible Man” he was rewarded with a 7-year $18.45 million dollar contract.

Basketball from a fans perspective
Cut-back
No the NBA season will not reduce its 82 game regular season schedule if that‘s what you were thinking. The 2017-18 season might begin earlier or at least that is what is rumored. The new collective bargaining agreement is too completed before the end of the year and the start of the season is one of the agenda items. The NBA is attempting to reduce the number of back to back games and starting earlier would go a long way in that effort.
Much improved
We have longed for the day UMKC would play competitive basketball could this be the year? I certainly hope so and thus far play has improved. The win over South Dakota gives them a 6-2 start the best in like forever. We are yet to arrive at conference play but I wanted to check some numbers out of curiosity. The latest Rating Percentage Index or RPI places UMKC in a tie at number 97. That’s no place close to the top but consider this tidbit of information the number of Division I basketball programs total 351.
UMKC will not receive an NCAA Tournament invite but certainly details growth in the program under Coach Kareem Richardson. By the way UMKC’s ranking is ahead of Iowa State (106), SMU (109) and Oklahoma State (112). My chief concern the majority of the teams offense emanates from the back court as for the front court it’s got to be rebound the ball by committee. The tallest UMKC player is Aleer Leek at 6-9 however he barely sees the floor. The roster contains two 6-8 players and one 6-7 that’s it.
By who’s definition?
Greg Oden claims he will go down in history as the NBA’s All-Time draft bust. I’m not walking in his shoes but I have doubts about his reflective view of his brief NBA career. There is a vast difference between players handicapped by injuries (him) than one who appears to just not care (Michael Olowokandi). I will repeat an earlier reported assessment of Olowokandi. At a point in time Olowokandi was a member of the Clippers who employed Kareem Abdul Jabbar as a member of their coaching staff.
Kareem was specifically assigned to Olowokandi to teach him how to play the post effectively.The disclaimer we have no direct knowledge of Kareem’s coaching ability but we have the response of Olowokandi to someone accessing his game. Olowokandi questioned about Kareem said; “I’ve learned all I can from him” which sounds either arrogant or just plain stupid. He had the NBA’s All-Time scoring leader coaching him and he makes an asinine statement along those lines.
There are other “Oden’s” players who sustained injuries which curtailed their NBA careers. Sam Bowie like Oden was also drafted by the Blazers; in fact he was drafted ahead of Michael Jordan. He would suffer a series of injuries which impacted his career. Brandon Roy also of the Blazers was on his way to an All-Pro career until injuries slowed him and then forced his eventual retirement at age 29.
For those players such as Greg Oden and the others I believe we can only state they might have left the game with unfilled expectations but the word “bust” just doesn’t fit for me. There have been a number of players who failed to play at the level expected. They were not curtailed by injury or even the team they with their attitude regarding the game became their worst enemy. In the case of Olowokandi he was a Big Man so he probably lasted longer than others however his career numbers certainly don’t reflect it.

Basketball from a fans perspective
Isaiah Austin
The news regarding former Baylor star Isaiah Austin is encouraging however there is a another side to consider. The “clearance” to resume basketball activities comes from him no official word from his doctors. I don’t believe he’d generate publicity just because its likely he’s been given an okay however there might be more to the story. How about Chris Bosh of the Heat although the conditions are different they both have heart related issues. Bosh has gone to war with the medical staff of the Heat, they refuse to allow Bosh on the court despite assurances he is fit to play. The same situation as Austin, Bosh is declaring he's okay to play but no official word from his doctors.
As for Austin this writer is not quite as optimistic about his prospects as I was just a short 24-hours ago on hearing the news. We need no repeat of Pete Maravich, Reggie Lewis or Hank Gaithers dieing on the basketball court, it’s just a game it shouldn’t be a matter of life or death. I realize we take our life in our hands everyday driving the interstate to our place of employment but it’s not the same thing. I would hope Austin’s mother or someone close to him has his ear. We realize there are no guarantees in life however there is no requirement to put your life at risk for a game, life is much more important.
Philly fans
I’ve never visited Philadelphia, all I’ve ever read or heard since I was a child was the ruthlessness nature of Philly fans. The most famous story is the one surrounding Santa Claus. Approaching Christmas one year Santa shows up at an Eagles game and fans begin throwing snowballs and booing him. Maybe they were just upset because the Eagles were either losing the game or had a bad season I don’t know.
As for the NBA Sixers that’s a different story. Only those in the metro can provide clarity on the basketball side however I’ve got to believe they must be the most patient fans in the world. Consider the play Warriors/Sixer fans have witnessed over the years. Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, Word B. Free, Bobby Jones you get the idea.
Over the last several years the fortunes of the Sixers have been terrible. How terrible you ask over the last three years the team is 37-199 while former GM Sam Hinkie accumulated draft picks. During this time Sixer fans have continued to journey to Wells Fargo Arena despite the poor play of their team. Hinkie’s response; “Trust the Process” which has been adapted by many Sixer fans as a theme. The Sixers are still bad despite the emergence of Joel Embiid; they will continue to be dreadful even when Ben Simmons arrives. Your patience has taken you this far there is no time to grow weary.
It’s not fair
I stated on more than one occasion it’s unfair to compare Player A. with Player B. but here I go again. He comes from the Pacific Island nation of New Zealand. He is only the 4th New Zealander to play in the NBA but might become the best. Steven Adams was one of those big men who might have developed further if he’d remained at Pitt a couple years more. After two pedestrian seasons he managed to come to the forefront last year. Whether it was just the opportunity to play regularly or the growth of his game he improved.
So far in this short season he’s not going to shock anyone with his numbers (13 ppg 9 rebounds) it’s the other things he does. Adams blocks shoots and does an effective job of clogging the lane; in addition his pick n roll game has improved significantly. I’m not sure which announcer made the statement during a recent Thunder-Laker game but it’s was noteworthy. (With no Durant) “If the Thunder must depend on Adams to be the secondary scorer well.” I guess he didn’t check the final box score that witnessed Adams scoring 14 points and snatching down 12 rebounds. I almost forgot my comparison its Brad Miller who spent the finest of his 16 year NBA career as a member of the Kings.
Isaiah Austin
The news regarding former Baylor star Isaiah Austin is encouraging however there is a another side to consider. The “clearance” to resume basketball activities comes from him no official word from his doctors. I don’t believe he’d generate publicity just because its likely he’s been given an okay however there might be more to the story. How about Chris Bosh of the Heat although the conditions are different they both have heart related issues. Bosh has gone to war with the medical staff of the Heat, they refuse to allow Bosh on the court despite assurances he is fit to play. The same situation as Austin, Bosh is declaring he's okay to play but no official word from his doctors.
As for Austin this writer is not quite as optimistic about his prospects as I was just a short 24-hours ago on hearing the news. We need no repeat of Pete Maravich, Reggie Lewis or Hank Gaithers dieing on the basketball court, it’s just a game it shouldn’t be a matter of life or death. I realize we take our life in our hands everyday driving the interstate to our place of employment but it’s not the same thing. I would hope Austin’s mother or someone close to him has his ear. We realize there are no guarantees in life however there is no requirement to put your life at risk for a game, life is much more important.
Philly fans
I’ve never visited Philadelphia, all I’ve ever read or heard since I was a child was the ruthlessness nature of Philly fans. The most famous story is the one surrounding Santa Claus. Approaching Christmas one year Santa shows up at an Eagles game and fans begin throwing snowballs and booing him. Maybe they were just upset because the Eagles were either losing the game or had a bad season I don’t know.
As for the NBA Sixers that’s a different story. Only those in the metro can provide clarity on the basketball side however I’ve got to believe they must be the most patient fans in the world. Consider the play Warriors/Sixer fans have witnessed over the years. Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley, Word B. Free, Bobby Jones you get the idea.
Over the last several years the fortunes of the Sixers have been terrible. How terrible you ask over the last three years the team is 37-199 while former GM Sam Hinkie accumulated draft picks. During this time Sixer fans have continued to journey to Wells Fargo Arena despite the poor play of their team. Hinkie’s response; “Trust the Process” which has been adapted by many Sixer fans as a theme. The Sixers are still bad despite the emergence of Joel Embiid; they will continue to be dreadful even when Ben Simmons arrives. Your patience has taken you this far there is no time to grow weary.
It’s not fair
I stated on more than one occasion it’s unfair to compare Player A. with Player B. but here I go again. He comes from the Pacific Island nation of New Zealand. He is only the 4th New Zealander to play in the NBA but might become the best. Steven Adams was one of those big men who might have developed further if he’d remained at Pitt a couple years more. Basketball from a fans perspective
Is the NBA in his future?
Marfan syndrome is a medical condition it’s likely only those in the medical field are familiar with. Isaiah Austin probably never heard of either prior to the diagnosis. The 7-1 Austin decided in favor of leaving Baylor for the 2014 NBA draft, prior to the draft being conducted a medical check-up discovered he suffered from Marfan syndrome. From WebMD; “Is an inherited disease that affects the body’s connective tissue, which provides the strength, support, and elasticity to tendons, cartilage, heart valves, blood vessels, and other vital parts of the body. The condition is fairly common, affecting 1 in 5,000 Americans. It is found in people of all races and ethnic backgrounds.”
Activity such as a strenuous game of basketball could be fatal in relation to the heart muscles. Austin’s hopes for an NBA career vanished just like that; Adam Silver and the NBA did an unusual thing. The NBA drafted Austin the evening of the draft realizing he’d never play in the association. Fast forward to November 30, 2016 Austin announced his doctor cleared him to resume basketball activity. This is written at a point we are lacking complete detail we don’t know if Austin will be allowed in the 2017 NBA draft or just medically cleared to play basketball. This we do know November 30th becomes a re-birth for young Mr. Austin.
Now versus last year
I promise this is the last time I will compare the 2015-16 Lakers with last years team. Starters D’Angelo Russell and Swaggy P. were sidelined as the Lakers went into United Center on Wednesday evening and beat the Bulls 96-90. The win was the Lakers 10th of the season, last year it was February 2nd before win number 10 was registered.
I don’t hate them
The Clippers I believe are a reflection of their coach Doc Rivers. I have maintained for a few years now their inability to get pass the second round is not a talent issue. It’s clearly a coaching issue I also believe River’s coaching ability is overrated. Check his coaching record the Celtics were traveling in the opposite direction before Doc decided to check out. He landed on his feet taking the Clipper job with an “assembled” team in place. Folks are always saying Phil Jackson’s never built the Bulls or the Lakers. We could easily make the same statement about Doc Rivers.
Paul Pierce was already in place with the Celtics when Doc arrived, Danny Ainge traded for Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. It’s easy to win when you have Jordan/Pippen or Shaq/Kobe that‘s what they said about Jackson. Might we make a similar statement about Doc? I don’t hate Doc or the Clippers I continue to believe the Clippers and him are overrated. Teams are oftentimes a reflection of their leader, the Knicks and Suns lead the NBA with 20 team technical’s guess which team is in second place with 18 as this is written? Prove me wrong please, advance past the second round so I can eat crow.
Still the best
I hope fans of the Big 12 are realist, the Kansas win over Duke 77-75 is noteworthy but does it prove anything? The Big 12 trumps the ACC you say, well not exactly. When you are the number two conference in the nation you try harder i.e. the Big 12. Conference fans sometimes tend to view the strength of this conference through the eyes of Kansas basketball.
Kansas is good, really good but they are the exception rather than the rule. Is this the year Baylor rises and unseats Kansas in the role of conference leader? As this is written TCU is undefeated, will they continue to play top notch basketball? The surprise thus far is Texas which was expected to compete is 3-2 at this point.

Basketball from a fans perspective
Ankle breaker
Allen Iverson might have been the master of “breaking ankles.” He certainly wasn’t the first but became one of the most famous. Iverson was maybe 6 feet tall so in his case breaking ankles is understandable. How about a 7-1 power accomplishing the same feat, on Tuesday during the Bucks-Cavs game the reserves had entered the game. Bucks reserve and rookie Thon Maker was being guarded by 6-10 Chris “Birdman” Anderson of the Cavs. The ball was passed to Maker on the left baseline he dribbles the ball takes a jab step. At that point “down went Frazier, down went Frazier.” Sorry wrong sport and wrong time-period, in any event Anderson loses his balance and is lying on his side as Maker hit’s the jump shot. Check it out for yourself, you know what to do.

Herding kittens
Somehow my other self volunteered to coach 2nd grade co-ed basketball. To date all I’ve ever attempted to coach were 6th and 7th grade boys’ teams. The coordinator of the league said; “We don’t have officials, we are just trying to get them active in sports. They sometimes pick up the basketball and run with it.” I thought “Boy what have I got myself involved in?” Our first practice I came home and my wife asked me “How was it?”
I informed her “I need a drink,” she laughed knowing her husband doesn’t drink. In any event our season starts in January and runs about six weeks I’ll keep you posted on our progress or lack there off. The title of this account, at the time I first made it known I was volunteering to coach a friend called. She said her husband had coached 2nd grade and he compared it to herding kittens.
You didn’t include him
On Tuesday when discussing Big Men I omitted the Pistons Andre Drummond it wasn’t intentional or because I have an issue with him. I haven’t witnessed his play enough to include him with the five standouts however that fails to take into consideration he might soon be. The former UConn center is now in his 4th year but just turned 23 in August. At 6-11 and 279 pounds Drummond certainly has the bulk to be included with the other Big Men. His career scoring numbers are 13.3 points and 12.6 rebounds a game both he’s currently exceeding. Drummond’s been a double-double man the last three years and is currently second in the NBA in rebounds at 12.9 per game.
Team Travel
If you are under a certain age traveling by train sounds as though it occurred in the 19th Century. Those ancient times were not so long ago in fact it was the late ‘40‘s and early to mid ’50‘s teams utilized travel by train. Geography was the chief reason; most NBA teams were concentrated on the Eastern seaboard. Boston, New York, Syracuse and Philadelphia were relativity close destinations. Prior to Amtrak train travel had rather timely schedules and teams could travel easily between destinations especially on the east coast. As the NBA began expanded westward out of necessity teams begin flying to destinations. Rosters and staffs in the late ‘50’s into the early ‘60’s were much smaller then the NBA of today, a head coach no assistants and a 12-man roster.
That’s about all the travel space required thus allowing NBA teams to fly commercial. As the NBA expanded travel distance became greater teams began utilizing charter flights. Flying charter is not universal as an example the Mavs fly in owner Mark Cuban’s Boeing 757, the Pistons once owned their own aircraft a DC-9 but now fly charter. Information I was able to gather indicate Delta Airlines is the principal charter for NBA teams but probably not the only one. The advantage of charters is too numerous to detail in this short space however there is one clear advantage. Charter allows an NBA to depart and arrive at a time they decide rather than waiting on airline scheduling. It’s much easier now days versus the days of train travel or commercial flights.

Basketball from a fans perspective
I missed him
In an earlier discussion of the 2017 Rookie of the Year I tossed out several names for consideration. I’ve mentioned number one draft pick Ben Simmons is sidelined at least till January is out of consideration. In addition number two pick Brandon Ingram of the Lakers is coming off the bench and playing reserve minutes. There is no argument thus far Sixer Joel Embiid has got to be in the lead for Rookie of the Year.
Who did I miss you ask a guy with good basketball jeans or is it genes? I missed Domantas Sabonis whose dad Arvydas played for the Blazers from 1995-2001 and later in the 2003-03 season. Domantas is not displaying spectacular numbers but is in the starting lineup for playoff contender Thunder. After two years at Gonzaga the younger Sabonis declared for the NBA draft and was chosen in the first round by the Thunder with the 11th pick.
The NFL
Curiosity more than fact, since the beginning of the NFL season we’ve heard and read stories about viewership. Fans continue to walk through the turnstiles for games tuning in on television is a different matter. NFL television numbers have been down since the beginning of the season. One of the explanations we heard early was; “Everyone is distracted by the presidential election.” That might have been true however we are two almost three weeks beyond the election and the numbers continue to slide. The other response I heard has a basketball connection sort of.
“They have Sunday night, Monday night and Thursday night plus Sunday afternoon maybe there is too much football on television?” After hearing the statement by a media type I thought “During the basketball season there are college and NBA games on every evening. In addition there is Saturday afternoon evening and Sunday evening games.” I’m not hearing any “NFL” type stories from the NCAA or NBA wonder why? I’m not confused, the number of fans sitting in front of their televisions viewing the NFL exceed college and the NBA. I just found it interesting television which allowed the NFL to succeed baseball with most Americans is not complaining.

It was his junior year is high school I first came across the name Devin Booker. You know what it’s like you hear the last name and wonder; “Is he related to ____.” I do this all the time with basketball players because there are so many father-sons who play the game. That is the case here Devin is the son of Melvin Booker point guard for the Mizzou Tigers back in the day. As the recruiting battle ensued for his services I noticed Rivals had Mizzou as one of the schools this outstanding high school player was exploring.
Naturally I was disappointed when he chose Kentucky but who could blame him. He arrived on campus with a number of former McDonalds All Americans and then the platoon set in. Coach Cal and his system we thought the 6-6 guard could shoot however limited minutes left questions in our mind. The questions continued after Devin decided to leave Kentucky after but one season. He left early with many convinced was he ready for the NBA. Location, location, location has often been said in basketball and other pursuits.
The Suns made Devin the 13th pick in the first round of the 2015 draft. Although not initially a starter he ended the season there, it’s likely the only reason he wasn’t NBA Rookie of the Year was due to his former Kentucky teammate Karl-Anthony Towns. Devin ended the season with 13.8 points per game average. So far this season he’s nearly 20 points a game for a poor Suns team. Dad Melvin was forced to play 98% of his basketball career in Europe, he believes he didn’t get a fair shot. He’s not upset and now says he’s living the NBA through son Devin.

Basketball from a fans perspective
Triple-double
Two factors to consider, 1. Triple-doubles are more difficult to accomplish at the collegiate level and very rarely occur. 2. Can you believe the number of players at the Kentucky and only two have accomplished triple-doubles in the school‘s history. The first occurrence was 1988 and the Kentucky player was Chris Mills, you say Chris who? Mills played at Kentucky during the 1988-89 season and had a six year NBA career. De Aaron Fox registered a triple-double on Monday November 28th. The 6-4 point guard recorded 14 points 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
Fans are fans
Even as a small boy I felt uncomfortable booing an opposing team or player. This has continued into adulthood although I certainly have been tempted at times. I’ve never uttered a profanity at any player at any time. Fans pay good money for sports events however that fail to give them the right to say or do anything you wish. The 2004 “Malice in the Palace” between the Pistons and Pacers was exacerbated by a number of Pistons fans coming out of the stands and contributing to the fighting getting out of hand
On Sunday night the Lakers faced the Hawks and Dwight Howard. Doesn’t matter the Hawks are his second team since he left the Lakers fans continue to boo him, they booed every time he touched the ball. One Laker fan believed he could say anything he wanted to Howard after the game. Reports indicate the incident caused Howard to challenge the fan. Laker fan or not if he called Howard the name that’s reported he needed to be knocked upside his head. Freedom of speech does not give you the right to say whatever you want without consequences.
“Throw it down Big Man”
The phrase above was coined by former NBA player and current ESPN analyst Bill Walton. Serving as analyst he would often make the statement once or twice during a college game. He meant to imply there was no requirement for Big Men to lay the ball up gently on the backboard he wanted an emphatic slam dunk, by now you know I have an affinity for the Big Man’s game.
There are several Big Men I follow, surprise surprise there is not a Laker among the bunch at least for now. Please note they are not placed in any order of rank just as I thought of them. Note the ages, the “old-man” of the bunch is Whiteside who turned 27 years old last June. This collection of talent speaks volumes for the continued growth of the NBA game we love. It’s amazing what a year can do in the life of an NBA team. The Laker victory Sunday evening raised them to .500 with their 9th win of the season. Last season they won game number 9 on January 12th. All I can say is I’m pleased I expected no playoff but hoped for improved play. So far that’s exactly what I’ve received to date, one other note if you remember I had no problem with firing Byron Scott.
I was concerned whether Luke Walton would be able to infuse a winning attitude to this core of youngsters. So far the move to hire Walton has paid huge dividends. It was pointed out on NBA TV the Laker bench has scored 60 points four times this season. Winning by committee is how it’s done with Kobe Bryant now retired. Laker reserves are scoring at a 51.2 ppg clip best in the NBA.
Triple-double
Two factors to consider, 1. Triple-doubles are more difficult to accomplish at the collegiate level and very rarely occur. 2. Can you believe the number of players at the Kentucky and only two have accomplished triple-doubles in the school‘s history. The first occurrence was 1988 and the Kentucky player was Chris Mills, you say Chris who? Mills played at Kentucky during the 1988-89 season and had a six year NBA career. De Aaron Fox registered a triple-double on Monday November 28th. The 6-4 point guard recorded 14 points 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
Fans are fans
Even as a small boy I felt uncomfortable booing an opposing team or player. This has continued into adulthood although I certainly have been tempted at times. I’ve never uttered a profanity at any player at any time. Fans pay good money for sports events however that fail to give them the right to say or do anything you wish. The 2004 “Malice in the Palace” between the Pistons and Pacers was exacerbated by a number of Pistons fans coming out of the stands and contributing to the fighting getting out of hand
On Sunday night the Lakers faced the Hawks and Dwight Howard. Doesn’t matter the Hawks are his second team since he left the Lakers fans continue to boo him, they booed every time he touched the ball. One Laker fan believed he could say anything he wanted to Howard after the game. Reports indicate the incident caused Howard to challenge the fan. Laker fan or not if he called Howard the name that’s reported he needed to be knocked upside his head. Freedom of speech does not give you the right to say whatever you want without consequences.
“Throw it down Big Man”
The phrase above was coined by former NBA player and current ESPN analyst Bill Walton. Serving as analyst he would often make the statement once or twice during a college game. He meant to imply there was no requirement for Big Men to lay the ball up gently on the backboard he wanted an emphatic slam dunk, by now you know I have an affinity for the Big Man’s game.
There are several Big Men I follow, surprise surprise there is not a Laker among the bunch at least for now. Please note they are not placed in any order of rank just as I thought of them. Note the ages, the “old-man” of the bunch is Whiteside who turned 27 years old last June. This collection of talent speaks volumes for the continued growth of the NBA game we love. Basketball from a fans perspective
“I ain’t scurred!“
Kyrie Irving didn’t actually phrase his statement in the above manner; he did indicate he was unafraid of facing the Sixers Joel Embiid. In his short limited minutes NBA career Embiid’s reputation for blocking shots has preceded him. Irving’s 39 points allowed the Cavs to slip past the Sixers 112 to 108. As for that guy that blocks shots he only had 3 however the balance of his numbers were 4 assists along with 9 rebounds and 22 points. This accomplished in his limit of 25 minutes court-time.
Pre-occupation with numbers
I’m sometimes unsure why ESPN.com NBA is so pre-occupied with records. “Russell Westbrook is now tied with LeBron James in career triple-doubles” reads the sentence. That’s not exactly correct; Westbrook accomplished the feat in a lesser number of games than LeBron. Don’t confuse us ESPN that’s not exactly correct.
A gradual increase
I’m not sure who to attribute the statement however I certainly agree. It was during the recent Laker-Warriors game and the announcer said “Laker Brandon Ingram was a fan of Kevin Durant.” He stated how thin Durant was on his arrival in the NBA; Durant packed about 210 pounds on his 6-9 frame.
Ingram checks in a 190 pounds on at 6-9 and the announcer said “Durant couldn’t bench press 185 pounds at the time he first came into the NBA.” Durant now weighs about 240 pounds adding weight and muscle over his career. “Ingram should gain weight in the same manner” which makes sense. If Ingram were to put on 20 pounds immediately he’d probably be sluggish and much slower, a gradual weight increase is the best method to pack on weight.
Plenty of bragging
North Carolina, Kansas, Duke, Kentucky and UCLA fans like to argue their basketball program is better than yours. I am steering this ship in neutral waters because I have no favoritism toward any of the programs profiled. Year after year witness these schools are usually at the top of the college basketball world. On occasion with the exception of UCLA one or more are competing for the NCAA Championship. These schools are among the best due to good coaching and the fact they are able to attract top-notch talent to their respective campus. What about the NBA might be your question. The NBA certainly is should not be considered a barometer of skill. I believe there are a number of good to great college players at each of these schools. Sometimes they are unable to transfer the success of college into the NBA. With the disclaimer out of the way let’s check the numbers each of theses schools have provided NBA teams.
