BASKETBALL FROM A FANS PERSPECTIVE
We hear from another country
Scottie Pippen was likely the voice we heard first, there might have been someone in front of him.  In any event prior to the injury Pippen stated Zion Williamson should sit for the balance of the season.  He and others expressed the belief he could be injured which would significantly affect his draft status.  You might remember I called Pippen out on the position he’d taken i.e. Williamson sitting out the balance of the season.
The next voice we hear is Kobe Bryant who skipped college for the NBA.  At the time there was no rule prohibiting a high school player from declaring for the draft.  The short version of Bryant’s statement was concise and to the point, “if he’s healthy, he should go play. He made a decision to go to college, and injuries are a part of that process, and sometimes you get hurt, sometimes you don’t, man. But you made the decision to go to college and you made your commitment to the university, then by all means finish your commitment.” *

Right down to the wire
After last week’s action it appears the Big 12 race is going right down to the wire.  As you can see Tech and State are tied for first with Kansas in second 1 game behind them.  Kansas State would appear to have the edge, two of their three games are at home.  Texas Tech has two road games but should be able to beat TCU and Iowa State.  Kansas should handle Oklahoma State and Oklahoma however the Jayhawks have experienced road woes this season.
Texas Tech 11-4, TCU (r) Texas (h) Iowa State (r)
Kansas State 11-4, Baylor (h) TCU (r) Oklahoma (h)
Kansas 10-5, Oklahoma State (r) Oklahoma (r) Baylor (h)
The first draft pick
No, that honor likely belongs to Zion Williamson, we are talking the first international draft pick.  The name we are likely to hear the commissioner call in the 2019 draft is Sekou Doumbouyae.  Last June those who follow the draft closely were not shocked or surprised to hear the name Luka Doncic. In 2015 Kristaps Porzingis was not unknown, maybe the position he was drafted might have been a surprise but not his name.
Doumbouyae just like Doncic is only 18-years old, the youngster was born in Guinea’s capital Conakry, his family move to France when he was 6-years old.  He stands 6 foot 9 inches and checks in at 210 pounds, the scouting report indicates he plays both forward positions.  He began his professional career with Poitiers and now plays for Limoges CSP.  The outlook by DraftXpress.com, “Already a tremendous talent, and has quite a bit he can improve on in terms of his shooting, passing and defense to become an even more complete player.”
We held one of them
You held one of those discussions where each side attempts to make its point, at the end there is no clear winner just an opinion.  This one revolved around which basketball conference is stronger the SEC or Big 12?  Well the score is 2-1 in favor of the SEC, despite the fact this Mizzou fan said he believed the Big 12 was stronger.  His two friends stated their belief in the SEC.
I said, “Kentucky, Florida and a few others have a history of strong basketball programs.”  My friends then pointed out “How come KU dominates the Big 12 every year for the past 14?”  I had to agree with them on this point, “One conference hasn’t been dominated in this manner since the days of UCLA and Lew Alcindor.”  What do you think?  I might add neither of my friends claims an allegiance to any time while my loyalty clearly lies with Mizzou now an SEC team.
