Basketball from a fan’s perspective

Published Monday through Friday weekly
Say it ain’t so
I’m unsure if the news broke late Wednesday night, I went to bed early.  The morning sports news indicated the Warriors Steph Curry sustained a broken left hand in a hard fall.  I’ve not read any additional reports except for the headline.  The NBA is a marathon, will Curry return before the end of the season is the question?  The Warriors have now lost both members of their starting back court to injury.
Klay Thompson was injured in the playoffs last season now Steph with the 2019-20 season but 4 games old.  Its possible Curry could return near the end of the season, but the question remains is it necessary?  It might depend where the Warriors sit in the standings and if they qualify for a playoff spot is the better question? Earlier in the week one .com site asked the question, “Will the Warriors qualify for the playoffs.”  Interesting in that the account was written prior to the news of last night.
Bits n Pieces
If this appears critical so be it, once again the Rockets offer us proof.  They are a typical Mike D’Antoni team they play little if any defense, The Beard with 59 points and Westbrook with a triple double.  They beat the rebuilding Wizards by one point 159-158.  There is no doubt they will earn a playoff berth, unless they begin playing better defense an NBA championship might be out of the question.
This might not be surprising to many, despite standing 7 foot 6 inches tall Tacko Fall is a smart guy.  Possessor of an engineering degree from UCF, we read his SAT score could have gained his admittance into an Ivy League institution.  There is a fall back plan in place, if there is no NBA career in Fall’s future, he will become the world’s tallest engineer.
I’m unsure how Matt Norlander came to his conclusion, at the same time I hope students, alumni and fans are not offended by this account.  The CBS.com college basketball writer ranked the top basketball team in each state.  For the State of Missouri Norlander chose Missouri State, he admitted normally Mizzou would be in top position.  I remain unsure who left the program or who returned but the Springfield school finished last season at .500 (16-16).  Mizzou had lesser wins than the prior season but was 15-17, I believe their win total for the upcoming season should surpass last season.
Kyle Kuzma is reported to be activated for tonight’s game against the Mavs.  He becomes one more vital cog in the Lakers playoff hopes.  Rajon Rondo is also close to returning however he’s expected to miss the game.

Now and then
An NBA player comes along we just plain don’t like.  I cannot make that statement about LeBron James; I always appreciated his play before the Lakers.  He wasn’t then and is still not my all-time favorite basketball player.  Wedding dress aside the overbearing play of Dennis Rodman bothered many NBA fans.  It wasn’t the fact he couldn’t play he was an expert rebounding the basketball it was his well you read it earlier.
Later Bruce Bowen mostly playing for the Spurs played tough defense, some said it was dirty ball.  Check it out on YouTube, there is video of him tripping an opposing player on purpose.  There are other similar incidents throughout his NBA career.  We now arrive at the doorstep of the Clippers Randy Beverly.  He’s cut out of the same mold as his predecessors Rodman and Bowen.  Unless you are a Clippers fan Beverly is one of those players you just love to hate.
It’s different now
College basketball recruiting has changed, we discussed this previously.  In this instance we are discussing the announcement process.  Once upon a time a prospect simply signed the paperwork in his living room with the coach and family surrounding him.  This next portion I’m unsure in what order but it’s believed it was the high school site.  The prospect was seated in the gym along with his family the coach and his fellow students.

That scenario morphed into an ESPN televised “production.”  We use the term production because on the table in front of the prospect were 3 or 4 caps of the schools under consideration.  The prospect would indicate the school of his choice by reaching for the caps and placing one on his head.  That method of announcement remains common practice although a number simply announce their college choice via a tweet.  We’ve come a long way from sitting at home and signing the paperwork.
