Basketball from a fan’s perspective

Published Monday through Friday weekly
Mid Court
NBA TV was criticized for its broadcast approach in the past, in prior years they picked up the local feed utilizing the home broadcasters.  NBA TV now has its own telecast which they have titled “Mid Court”.  Former NBA player turned analyst Dennis Scott is on the floor, serving as broadcasters are Brian Anderson along with former NBA player Greg Anthony.  NBA TV now reflects the announcing teams on the other networks, ESPN/TNT/ABC.  In a manner of speaking I miss the local announcing teams, they openly root for the home team which I loved.
It’s here
The NBA season began a few weeks ago, Tuesday evening the college basketball season officially kicked off.  Several teams had already begun non-conference play however Tuesday witnessed 100+ teams throughout the nation in action.  Although several ranked teams played the key match was (4) Duke versus (3) Kansas.  If it appears, we are rushing the season it could be true, most Division I teams wind up playing more than 25 games counting non-conference and conference games.  The NCAA champion in early April usually has 30+ wins by that time.
He was a free agent
Most realize number one draft pick Zion Williamson is sidelined with an injury.  The question is asked who is tied as the top scoring rookie in the NBA?  If you said Darius Garland, RJ Barrett or Rui Hachimura they might be good choices however none of the above are correct.  Truth is this scoring rookie finished college in 2018 and spent last season in the G-League.  Kendrick Nunn is a 24-year old combo guard and he’s tied with Jae Morant as this is written with a 19.5 point per game average.
Few of us might have known the name Kendrick Nunn.  After playing for the Warriors Summer League team in 2018 he was released by the Warriors and assigned to the Santa Cruz Warriors.  In April 2019 the Heat signed Nunn to a free-agent contract, we should be surprised this season but perhaps not.  Nunn led the nation in 3-point shooting his senior year.  He was second to Trae Young in scoring with a 25.9 point per game average.
After beginning his college at the University of Illinois he ran into personal issues which caused him to be dismissed from the school.  Nunn would transfer to Oakland University in Rochester Hills Michigan some 40 miles from downtown Detroit.  Someone once said; “It doesn’t matter where you start (Santa Cruz) it’s where you end (Heat).  Nunn offers us proof there is no requirement to be drafted provided you are in the right spot at the right time.  I forgot to mention, you’ve got to have a degree of talent.
Do I miss the Big 12?
Mizzou has been a member of the SEC since 2012, do I miss the Big 12?  Of course, I do, the rivalry particularly in basketball with Kansas more than other conference members.  Have I adjusted to no longer competing against Iowa State, Texas and other Big 12 schools?  The answer is yes however despite the change I’m okay now.  What’s different, I mistakenly believed Mizzou would have more problems in football than basketball in the SEC.  That’s not exactly been the case, after two winning seasons under the departed Frank Haith the next three were a disaster for Mizzou in the SEC.
The first season under Cuonzo Martin was a winner, last year was a step-back.  Mizzou should be improved in 2019-20 season but what about the conference?  Prior to 2012 I thought it was only Kentucky and the rest of the conference.  SEC basketball was okay I thought but not great, I’ve discovered its more competitive than I initially believed.  On par with the ACC, Big 10 or Big 12, not quite but its close.  The SEC began reaching out and hiring top notch coaching talent.  SEC basketball can be just as competitive as any other conference in the nation.  The question was asked, do I miss the Big 12 and the initial response was yes.  If you ask some years later an emphatic no.
