Basketball from a fan’s perspective

Help me understand
Thursday evening the Kings took apart the Clippers 124-103, Paul George played but was ineffective scoring only 8 points in 19 minutes of action.  Kawhi Leonard did not play no announcement was made but we guess he was load management.  Former NBA players turned analysts continue to inform us the up and downplay by the Clippers should not be taken seriously.  George and Leonard have had few games where both are on the court at the same time.

Almost in unison these analysts continue to inform us once the playoffs begin the Clippers will be ready.  As part of Laker Nation, you can discount this rant if you wish however there should be a concern by those who love the Clippers.  Once the playoffs begin there are no back to back games which should aid Leonard and George however there is a continuity issue.  It would appear team defense might be more critical than offense but that’s just a theory, we shall see.

Is anybody gonna give him an opportunity
The anybody refers to Markus Howard of Marquette, Howard has two serious issues. He’s under 6 feet tall (5-11) and he’s a shooting guard in a point guards’ body.  Now a senior it’s unlikely he will gain any additional height so what does the NBA do?  Howard is an outstanding scorer, his freshman year at Marquette witnessed him averaging 13 points a game.  His sophomore, junior and now senior year has seen him at 20+ points a game each season.

He might check out 5-9 Isaiah Thomas of the Wizards or Patty Mills Spurs guard who claims he’s 6 foot tall.  If Howard is drafted, he will prove to all comers he’s got an NBA game.   5-10-inch Damon Stoudamire now head coach at Pacific had a distinguished NBA career and how about J.J. Barea reserve guard for the Mavs?  Barea has also had a long NBA career.  “Little men must prove they can play while Big men must prove they can’t” has existed for a time.  Here’s hoping Howard has an opportunity to play at the NBA level.

Is this the year?
The Kansas Jayhawks have ridden rough shod over the Big 12 since…forever.  Apart from last season and 2003-04 the Jayhawks won outright or tied for the conference championship.  Even the great UCLA teams of Alcindor, Walton and others probably cannot make the same statement.  The only difference those UCLA teams once had an 88-game winning streak.  Finishing last season with a 26-10 record Self’s worst finish it was said 2019-20 would be better for Kansas basketball.  In a manner of speaking Kansas has played better than last season the only problem is Baylor.

Earlier the Bears marched into Allen Fieldhouse an arena they had never won and beat the Jayhawks.  Baylor’s since been ranked number one in the nation a position usually occupied by the Jayhawks at times.  We should consider a couple of factors, the Big 12 race is not over, in addition Baylor could stumble on the road to completion of the season.  This writer is a purest, I don’t place a great deal of stock in the fact most conferences now have post-season tournaments.  If we play the regular season to determine a champion why do we hold a post-season tournament to decide if somebody else finishes in first place.  Will Kansas avoid an upset somewhere else and manage to beat Baylor in Waco?  Those questions remain to be answered.

Frustrated fans
Knicks fans just might have reached the End of the Road, this ain’t no Boys to Men tune.  Just a couple of stanzas from the 1991 R&B Classic with apologies for changing the first word.

Knicks you know we belong together
I don't have no time for you to be playing with my heart like this
You'll be mine forever baby
You just wait
We belong together
And you know that I am right
Why do you play with my heart?
Why do you play with my mind?
They are so frustrated with the team and owner James Dolan, well allow me to show you rather than write about it, watch and listen.
