Basketball from a fan’s perspective

Of course he starts

At the press conference for Andre Drummond, a reporter ask, “Are you prepared to be a starter?”  His response was expected, “I’m just here to help” or similar words.  We are not privy to the coaches meeting but much of Laker Nation expect Drummond to start tonight.  If the Lakers faced a team other than the Bucks, he might not play but he needs to be fitted into the lineup as soon as possible.

Marc Gasol’s game has slowed greater than most of us realized, he’s always been “earth-bound”, but his scoring (4.8) and rebounding (3.9) have become infinitesimal.  Gasol’s passing skills remain the only stable part of his game that remains.  As for Drummond his field goal percentage 47.4 is the lowest of his career as for the other numbers, 17.5 ppg along with 13.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists.  Drummond has not played much over the past few weeks as the Cavs attempted to secure a trade prior to his eventual buyout.

Could he head to Mizzou?

4-star prospect Tamar Bates left Piper HS in Kansas City Kansas for IMG Academy in Florida.  Although he’s a local youngster not much was written due to his early letter of intent to attend Texas.  Shaka Smart is no longer in Austin, he is on his way to Marquette and based on this change Bates has requested a release from his letter.  Although not released Mizzou and Marquette have reached out to him with an offer.  Does he follow Smart to Marquette, he’d committed to Texas based on Smart being his coach.  Prior to his LOI there were several other schools with offers for the 6-4 175-pound combo guard.

The best center in the NBA

Who is the best center in the NBA, there might be some debate however it’s my belief I have the answer?  I will provide you a several hints, he is a foreign-born player.  Although he’s 7 feet tall he’s got exceptional 3-point range, in addition he can rebound the basketball.  Did I provide enough hints, or do you give up?  If you thought I was going to say Joel Embiid who is a close second.

The best center in the NBA is from Serbia and he’s been nicknamed the Joker, his name is Nikola Jokic.  In 2014 the Nuggets made him the 41st pick in the SECOND round, it’s utterly amazing drafted that low and he is now a three-time NBA All Star.  Jokic is the best passing center in the NBA and the only close comparison to him would be Embiid.  I believe I might have stirred up a hornet's nest with my analysis, what do you think?  Is it Team Embiid or Team Jokic vying for the best center in the NBA?

The 2021 NBA draft

Jalen Green and Jonathan Kuminga will likely be lottery picks in the 2021 NBA draft, both have come a distance since their high school graduation.  Green and Kuminga were headed to college or overseas before the NBA came calling…well it wasn’t exactly the NBA it was the G-League.  The NBA equivalent of the “minors” began reaching out to talented high school players they believed had pro written behind their name.

With the lure of pay and the opportunity to begin a pro career Green and Kuminga decided in favor of playing for Team Ignite.  Green a 6-foot 6-inch shooting guard and Kuminga a 6-foot 8-inch small forward now discover their names listed on several mock draft sites.  Matched against G-League veterans has proven beneficial to both, the competition each faced was superior to what they might have faced in college.  If only two players emerge from this initial roster of Team Ignite, we must consider this endeavor a success.  Our guess at this point Green and Kuminga will be replaced by other high school players desiring to jump start their NBA careers.

1976

That was the last year an NCAA undefeated champion was crowned, the Hoosiers of Indiana finished with the championship and a 32-0 record.  There have been others although not a large number, UCLA during the Alcindor-Walton era had two, 71-72 and 72-73 both years they finished 30-0, in the 1963-64 season UCLA also completed a perfect season 30-0.  Earlier there were two other perfect teams, the 1956-57 North Carolina team which beat Kansas and Wilt Chamberlain.  The first to play a perfect season was Bill Russell’s 1955-56 San Francisco Dons.

Where am I going with this story, as this is written Gonzaga is 28-0.  The question can they accomplish the same feat as the others?  The 2014-15 Kentucky Wildcats were undefeated in the regular season and into the NCAA Tournament.  They were 38-0 when they faced the Wisconsin Badgers, they would lose in the semi-finals and finish the season 38-1.  They were not undefeated, but the 1970-71 Southern Cal Trojans finished the season 24-2 and remained at home.  This was prior to post-season tournaments and NCAA expansion of teams.  The Trojans lost their two games versus UCLA and the NIT didn’t extend an invitation.

Dates to store in your memory bank

These are the reported dates as the NBA attempts to normalize its schedule:

NBA Draft Lottery June 22

Draft Combine June 21-27

NBA Draft July 29

The draft combine could prove interesting for players who might be on the bubble.  At the time DeMarre Carroll finished at Mizzou in 2009 it’s my belief few even knew his name prior to the draft combine, his play at the combine allowed him to be a late first round pick by the Rockets.  Although this journey man is no longer in the league, he earned enough time to qualify for an NBA pension.  As for the dates if revisions occur an attempt will be made to update the information for you as soon as practical.

Do what you do best

I’m viewing Get Up on ESPN and was reminded again; this is a basketball blog.  At the time the television was turned on the discussion centered on the NFL.  I was once chastised for writing about basketball in July, I was informed “Nobody is playing basketball now, why not write about the sport in season?”  That’s the problem, there is so much overlap in this day that’s extremely difficult.  Several of you might disagree and that’s okay, I believe you do what you do best.  That does not include NFL football, MLB, the NHL, golf or tennis for me.

I certainly have no intention of knocking any of those sports they all represent what we enjoy.  I love basketball plain and simple, why spend time writing about the NFL when I can state in truth there exists a small number of familiar NFL players.  I will watch the NFL Chiefs; I will view Mizzou football but that’s about it.  Same for baseball, it’s the Royals alone, I have no recollection who won the 2020 World Series, I can quickly inform you the Lakers won the 2020 NBA championship.  You gravitate toward those things of interest and for me its basketball, again no hate on the other sports.

Haters be hatin’

I read this the other day; I almost fell out of my chair with laughter.  This person claimed, “Getting Andre Drummond is not going to help the Lakers, in fact with LeBron and Davis out I hope they miss the playoffs.”  What is so funny to me his plan on the Lakers missing the playoffs all together.  This is the NBA the plan for this gentleman is certainly possible however not likely.  Worst case, LeBron and Davis return but not effective I give that one 30% chance of occurring.  Andre Drummond not effective with the Lakers…how about 45%?

The balance of the Lakers roster not playing effectively let’s say that’s a 40% possibility.  Looks as though the Lakers will make the playoffs what about other possibilities?  If they should finish in the 7th or 8th slot, they would be required to play more games to reach the championship series, that’s possible too.  The Lakers go on a hot streak and finish number one, they could get knocked off even in that position.  With all those variables would you be willing to place a bet they won’t make the playoffs?  How about the championship, willing to place a wager or do your belief reflect the hater you are?

It still counts

It’s not the NCAA Championship but it still counts in the eyes of the winners, the reference in this instance is the National Invitation Tournament Championship.  The Memphis Tigers wanted the NCAA Tournament but missed the cut for an invitation but secured an invite to the NIT.  They beat Mississippi State 77-64 on Sunday securing the championship.  Memphis finishes the season with 20 wins versus 8 losses.

How interesting former NBA player Penny Hardaway has moved into the coaching ranks.  For those who might not be aware a childhood friend who’s since passed away asked Penny to assist him with coaching his high school team.  When his friend died Penny took over the program and then his alma mater called, and he accepted the head coaching reins at Memphis.  Penny claims "We want to win championships, and the NIT is just a start."

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

I’m comfortable now

We’ve been reading for the past week or so Andre Drummond was leaning toward signing with the Lakers.  Two years ago, most in Laker Nation believed Kawhi Leonard would sign with the team and you see how that turned out.  You might understand my hesitancy believing Drummond was a deal until it is done.  It’s not official as this is written although I believe it will occur, his agent claims Drummond will sign with the Lakers as soon as he clears waivers.  That should occur at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time Sunday. Could a team cause this process to go south, anything is possible until Drummond signs on the dotted line.

As for the future with Drummond in the lineup the fully healed Lakers must do those things required, sink baskets, play tough defense and all those things that contribute to winning basketball.  The move is a good one on several levels for the Lakers.  The positives, there will be no requirement for Drummond to score but on arrival he is a greater offensive threat than Gasol.  He is also superior at rebounding the basketball, he’s not a great rim protector but an upgrade.  The only areas it is believed Gasol has an advantage is passing and free throw shooting.  As for the post-season Frank Vogel indicates Anthony Davis will play sometimes at the 5 once the Lakers reach the playoffs.  All in all, this is a good day for the Lakers after failing to pick up a player before the trading deadline expired.  NOTE:  Drummond cleared waivers and has signed with the Lakers.

What do you think?

I heard a comment regarding Shaka Smart and his move to Marquette, what are your thoughts.  The statement “He (Smart) moves from a football school to a basketball school.”  We realize football underwrites the bill for most athletic departments but was that the basis for Smart to not succeed at the level we thought?  I remember as if it was yesterday, I said it, “Recruiting will be great for him in Texas, he can recruit successfully without ever leaving the State of Texas.”

That statement by yours truly was somewhat correct, Smart was able to recruit successfully however did he suffer the effects of Texas playing in the wrong conference.  Kansas along with other members make the Big 12 conference the best (in my view) in the nation.  On the other end as much as Kansas desires to compete successfully in football they continue to lag in that area.  Several conferences don't even field football team or if they do it is at Division I-AA or even lower.

Gonzaga reloads

Several reading this might not be familiar with his name, it’s Hunter Sallis.  Sallis is a 6-foot 5-inch point guard from Omaha Nebraska.  Rivals.com rates him the number 7 prospect in the Class of 2021.  This 5-star prospect verbally committed this past Friday, he’s headed for Spokane Washington and Gonzaga.  Most interesting Gonzaga now competes with the big boy programs across the nation.  Sallis had 31 offers from several schools including Arkansas, Alabama, Kentucky, Louisville, Marquette and Kansas.

Division II basketball

Unless you live near a school, we often don’t have an opportunity to witness Division II basketball play.  The shadow of Division I basketball is so huge it overshadows Division II and NAIA basketball.  Despite this fact that fails to take into consideration incredibly good basketball is played and that was the case on Saturday.  Number 1 West Texas State A&M faced Northwest Missouri State seeded 2 for the Division II Championship.  If you are a basketball historian, you might be aware former Sixer player and coach Maurice Cheeks played at West Texas.

Interesting that West Texas started the game with 5 guards which might have proven to be their downfall.  Northwest Missouri State won the championship 80-54 their 3rd in the last 5 years.  Head coach Ben McCollum has quite an outstanding record (300-78 .794) in 12 years running the program.  His first two seasons his teams finished below .500, since then it’s been all uphill and success.  We question not if but when a Division I program will reach out to McCollum and offer him the head coaching job.

Basketball from a fan perspective

Are there enough basketballs

In the latest move to rule the world the Nets announced LaMarcus Aldridge signed a 1-year contract with the team, he joins Blake Griffin who joined earlier in the week.  Are there going to be enough basketballs for Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, James Hardin along with a legion of Nets?  If it appears, I’m not impressed with this latest move that might indeed be the case, are these stars, former stars and reserves willing to sacrifice their game to win an NBA Championship?  We certainly cannot answer the question in late March, stay tuned for the playoffs.

Marcus wants to know

NOTE:  The news cycle sometimes causes stories to be published out of order.  That is the case here, the account below was written prior to Amari Davis committing to Mizzou which you read yesterday.  Parker Braun announced he was transferring so there is an additional scholarship available.  Much of the story still applies that’s why I decided to proceed with publication.

The end of the basketball season for Mizzou is not pleasing to Marcus and others in Mizzou Nation.  He ask my take on the win total for next season which is difficult to project in late March.  Here goes, best case Mizzou wins 22 or 23 games, worst case 15-16.  We can’t do justice until the roster is complete which it is not at this point.  We know the crop of incoming freshman is rated Top 40 across the nation but have no idea who takes the Pinson scholarship or if grad transfers come on board.  We don’t know if injuries, academics or heaven help covid-19 impacts Mizzou basketball in 2021-22.  Great things are expected of Kobe Brown, the 6-foot 7 240 pound forward grew his game during his sophomore season.

Torrence Watson played extensively his sophomore year, his junior year not so much.  Is Watson ready to blossom at shooting guard a role we believed capable his senior year?  We have 3-point specialist Parker Braun and Ed Chang; he could play a vital role as a sniper in the upcoming season.  Big Man Jordan Wilmore hardly saw the court; however, he was a freshman, is the 7-foot 3 245-pound Wilmore ready to assume the Tilmon role in the middle?  This assessment will be revised in the future as additions (or subtractions) occur.  More than likely all the seniors leave however they have an extra year of eligibility if they desire to return.  Regardless of a return by one or more seniors I expect Mizzou to be improved barring the issues mentioned.

No movement

Most in Laker Nation are upset, they expected Rob Pelinka to pull a rabbit out of his hat.  Here’s the 4-1-1, every one of the teams making moves during the trading period is attempting one thing.  They are trying to eclipse the Lakers and replace them as NBA Champions, to be the champion you’ve got to beat the champion.  There is a belief none of these teams want to do anything that appears aiding the Lakers quest.

Reports indicate the Lakers turned down a trade for Kyle Lowry because they refused to include Talen Horton-Tucker.  Perhaps with the injuries and upgrades by the competition that might occur although we in Laker Nation hope that is not the case.  There are two scenarios, LeBron and AD come back in time for the Lakers to make a run or this occurs.  An Andre Drummond, LaMarcus Aldridge or an unknown player signs with the Lakers.  The key of course is the return to health by the Big Two, free agents will aid but not lead the team deep into the playoffs.

We don’t know the son, we know the father

Oklahoma and Lon Kruger lost to Gonzaga over the weekend, the following Thursday Kruger announced his intention to retire after 10 years at the helm.  The veteran coach has served as head coach at Kansas State, Florida, Illinois, Atlanta Hawks (NBA) and UNLV prior to taking the Oklahoma job.  In retirement Kruger will head to Las Vegas with two objectives in mind, the opportunity to see his grandchildren regularly and assist son Kevin in running the basketball program at UNLV.  We don’t know the son; we certainly know the father.  Good luck in your retirement Lon Kruger, you've come a long way from Silver Laker Kansas population 800 where you grew up.

Basketball from a fan perspective

Allow me to introduce

Amari Davis, a 6-foot 3-inch lefty point guard for the UW-Green Bay has decided he required a change.  Cuonzo Martin and Mizzou contacted him, and he said yes, so there you have it exit Pinson on Monday enter Davis on Friday.  He’s from Trotwood a suburb of Dayton Ohio, as for his numbers this past season at Green Bay they were 17 points 4 rebounds and 2 assists a game while shooting 42% from the floor.  The assist totals are low however we might consider the record of Green Bay, they finished the season with an 8-17 record.  That causes us to ponder if teammates failed to convert several of his passes.

Davis was All-Conference second team in the Horizon League which is quite a declaration on his proficiency considering he played on a losing team.  I’ve mentioned this in the past I don’t get into this analytics stuff but will pass it along anyway, according to Synergy Davis was 61% overall on defense whatever that entails.  As for the adjustment by Davis to SEC play, we can use Dru Smith as the example.  Smith was a transfer from Evansville in the Missouri Valley Conference, there appeared to be little issue with him adjusting to SEC play.  I contend Smith may have been the MVP for the 2020-2021 Tigers.  With that said welcome to Mizzou Amari Davis, we look forward to seeing you in action over the next three years.

Kawhi Leonard is no leader!

Yes, I said it and didn’t hesitate, Kawhi Leonard is no leader!  Notice I didn’t say Leonard wasn’t talented, I didn’t say he’s not been clutch.  That is not a problem for the Clippers, he plays the best basketball he is skillful but he’s not a “get in your face type of guy.”  LeBron James will get in your face, in the past Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant would get in your face.  By that I intend to point out these players and others exhibited leadership, Leonard is not that player.  Did the lack of leadership skills lessen his value to the Spurs and Raptors in the past, does it affect his play with the Clippers currently?

An emphatic NO is the answer, Leonard just goes about his job it is up to others to provide that leadership.  Who is that other on the current roster, I don’t believe he is present?  They had him at one time, his name…Chris Paul.  Through a move we still don’t understand Paul was traded to the Rockets and Patrick Beverly replaced him.  Beverly might be a superior defender but certainly cannot bring to the table all Paul was able to accomplish. This is written in late March, the playoffs are ahead, perhaps the Clippers will prove me wrong…maybe.  Perhaps the late trade for Rajon Rondo will provide the leadership this team appears to lack.

In the world of WOW

Shaka Smart leaving Texas for Marquette caught 99% of us off guard, we’ve read reports the coach has been under pressure for years to produce a top-quality product on the basketball court.  It was the belief of many he'd finally arrived at Texas, his team had beaten perennial power Kansas twice and was prepared to meet them for a third time in the Big 12 post season tournament.  It might have proved interesting if not for covid-19 protocol which forced Kansas to cease play.  Texas would face Abilene Christian in their first NCAA Tournament match but that would prove a disaster.

The Longhorns certainly didn’t expect to lose in the first round, perhaps the Marquette job was there all along and it simply required him to say yes.  If this appears to be unfavorable toward Smart that is certainly not the intent, he remains one of my favorite coaches, but he just might be that guy.  You know the guy who might be better suited to coach at the mid-major (VCU) level over a Power 5 school, we don’t claim this to be a fact it’s just a theory.  Smart is a winner, although expectations might have been higher once he was hired at Texas, his won-loss record is (274-142 .657).  At the age of 43 his coaching profile should continue to rise in the future and the winning should continue at Marquette, he’s a quality coach and just might prove those at Texas nipping at him of the fact.

S.O.S.

The headline is not a signal for help, it stands for Save Our Sonics.  This was a group of folks attempting to keep the Sonics in Seattle, as you are aware the franchise moved to Oklahoma City.  Since the move in 2008 many in the Pacific Northwest have pined for the NBA and the Sonics to return.  The volume continues to rise and in this instance movers and shakers indicate they are ready to plop their money down.  Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is part of the Sonics Arena Investment Group which is comprised of Chris Hansen, Erik and Pete Nordstrom along with former Sonics player Wally Walker.

We are unsure if Wilson remains with the group based on his recent news desiring a trade from the city.  Because they addressed Sonics basketball at different times, we are unsure if they would become part of this group, that includes another past Sonic player Gary Payton.  Recently Ray Allen another ex-Sonic made his thoughts known, he stated, “I would love for Seattle to have a team, and I would love to be part of the ownership.” As you might imagine this group would appear to have considerable financial clout and ability to purchase and stock an expansion NBA team.  The latest reported fee for an expansion team would be about $2.5 billion.  Seattle is certainly ahead of Las Vegas, Kansas City, and any other metro area vying for an NBA franchise.

Sports talk radio

I won’t pretend to speak for you but in Kansas City sports talk radio is bad.  Not “bad” as in good but the original definition…. bad.  Once upon a time I lived sports talk radio, drive time in the morning and drive time in the afternoon.  At some point I am unable to provide a day-date it became sorry.  At least during the time, they took calls it was interesting, I enjoyed listening to some of the callers, that became a problem when the studio host disagreed with the caller.  They would hurry the caller off the line pretending he or she had taken up too much airtime.  What are we left with, hours and hours of conversation that often causes you to scratch your head in wonder, consider this an example?

Loyola Chicago released information relating to the two games played in the NCAA Tournament, the amount of money earned was into the millions of dollars.  The two hosts were debating how the school could have earned that much income from just two games.  The debate wasn’t worth the time they took attempting to figure out the WHY, I listened for 4 minutes or so and then turned the radio off.  Since I’m a basketball guy I can only relate to that coverage which is not good.  Maybe they do a better job with football and baseball.  Over emphasis on Kansas basketball a tidbit of Kansas State and Mizzou coverage.  We might ask the question does Gonzaga play basketball or UCLA, Kentucky or Duke.  The only time those schools and others not part of the Big 12 are mentioned is infrequent and when mentioned it might be in derogatory terms.  The local guys are entitled to their opinions however who died and appointed them king of sports talk radio?

History is made

Today Illinois State University in Normal is considered a mid-major school, in 1970 the school was just one of the hundreds of Division I basketball programs.  Although most colleges even in the deep south had begun recruiting black players the coaching ranks remained closed.  In 1970 Illinois State made history when they hired Will Robinson, he would become the first black coach at a Division I school.

The majority of HBCU institutions now are Division I programs back then the vast majority played at the NAIA level.  So, as you see Robinson would serve as head coach of Illinois State until the 1975 season when he retired, in 1976 he became a scout for the NBA Pistons.  Robinson’s sharp eye for talent would lead the Pistons into drafting Dennis Rodman and Joe Dumars.  It was reported he’d been offered the job of head coach for the Pistons but turned it down.  This legendary high school and college coach died in 2008 at the age of 96, another name from the rich past of basketball we should become familiar with.

Pinson’s left the building

Monday after Mizzou’s Saturday night loss to Oklahoma guard Xavier Pinson announced he was transferring.  Most in Mizzou Nation like me were not shocked by the news, the coach and the player appeared at odds especially the second half of the season.  It seemed Cuonzo wanted one thing from Pinson, but Pinson delivered the other.  The divorce is difficult in that Pinson is not a transfer Cuonzo are at least a member of his coaching staff recruited the young man.  The good Pinson was excellent at times, penetrating and dishing the ball to Tilmon, Dru Smith or some other Tiger.

The bad Pinson streaked down the court at 175 miles an hour, over penetrated or took difficult or sometimes questionable shots.  At times he appeared to lack aggressiveness but that’s as an observer of his game.  I hope this doesn’t appear to be a slam at Pinson he is indeed a talent although his belief exceeds that of NBA scouts.  I hope he’s able to uncover a school that can utilize his forte, on the other hand he could be headed to Europe to begin a professional career.  I think he’s talented enough to play on the pro level, as for the NBA I have serious doubts.  As this was completed news report indicate Bruce Pearl at Auburn has reached out to Pinson.

Don’t you love rumors?

Well, I guess maybe not all however several do, the latest rumor we read is interesting.  It’s being reported he might turn pro rather than head to college in the fall.  We speak of Jaden Hardy 6-foot 4-inch shooting guard who hails from Henderson Nevada.  Hardy is a 5-star and number two prospect in the Class of 2021.  A story circulating indicates it might be a payday in his future rather than schoolbooks, Hardy might be destined for a professional career.  At this point the rumor mill has not pinned down his destination, we are unsure if it’s Team Ignite in the G-League or a European destination.

This is not exactly news in a sense, LaMelo Ball and RJ Hampton proved high school players can be drafted (2020) after a year playing overseas.  In June Jalen Green and Jonathan Kuminga will repeat this in June 2021 after completing a season in the G-League.  At a point in time, I opposed these types of moves but no longer, there are several sports an athlete can turn professional before the age of 18 the NBA is not one.  A large number desire to play in the NBA but those earning a tryout is small, why take space in a classroom if the desire is to play professional basketball.  In addition, if a degree is required that youngster can always attend college in the off season.

Truth

“I’d take a 2-star recruit with a 5-star work ethic over a 5-star recruit with a 2-star work ethic any day.”

Coach K.

He is the One

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6QoAMVzC9s

No Luka Doncic will not replace Keanu Reeves, but He is the One.  Remember awhile back we detailed the view that many believed the NBA with 74% black athletes needed a great white basketball player.  Well, it’s my belief that player is here, and his name is Luka Doncic.  The cynics attempting to point out his negatives claim “He’s not very athletic” but we might remind them neither was Larry Bird.  Bird played the game at a high level, he played with as much cerebral skill as physical, the same as Doncic.

Don’t misread the statement, there are a significant number of black athletes whose brain power is just as great as their athletic ability. Get this, Doncic indicated his comparison to Bird is unfair, and I can agree to a point.  You can’t compare me to Larry Bird, I have more and more games to go and a long time ahead of me.”  Luka the Don as he’s been nicknamed when he arrived in the NBA, we believed he could play the game, now in his third year even the skeptics have come around.  Doncic is not Neo, he can’t dodge bullets or fly however he’s doggone good.  He was in action once again in his third All Star Game.  Can Doncic help raise the Mavs level of play to consistent playoff level, that would be Bird-like.

Bleacher Report

I don’t know this to be a fact

32-year-old Kim English has been named head coach for George Mason, a few of you might remember English played shooting guard for the Tigers between two coaches.  Mike Anderson recruited him then departed for the Arkansas job, Frank Haith took over and managed to persuade English to remain at Mizzou.  He had a “cup of coffee” in the NBA with the Pistons, but it was coaching where his future lay.  English would go to work as an assistant for Haith who was now at Tulsa, in 2017 he departed for an assistant position at Colorado.

For the last two years he’s been Rick Barnes top man at Tennessee before the hire at George Mason.  Barnes indicated English was responsible for much of the recruiting at the university.  What does George Mason have to say, “Kim English is a rising star in the college basketball world,” the words of athletic director Brad Edwards at George Mason.  This must be the right move, last March English turned down the head coaching job at SE Missouri State.  Sometimes you have a good feeling, I don’t know this to be a fact, but I believe this hire of English is simply outstanding.  Outstanding for English and the university, good luck Kim English.

He might be correct

Recently Charles Barkley made the assertion, (James) Hardin is a better offensive player than Kobe and MJ.”  Barkley might indeed be correct but what does his statement prove?  The last time I checked there are two sides of a basketball court, when a team is on offense and defense, Hardin can’t pull a Bill Murray (Space Jam reference) you must play defense.  Questioned further Barkley claims “He’s (Hardin) a better defender now” which again may be true.  This should not be considered an indictment of James Hardin and his offensive arsenal; he is quite a load for any opposing guard to deal with.  I hope he doesn’t wind up in the same manner of the one making the statement.  Remember Barkley had dozens of NBA accolades and accomplishments but retired without a championship ring.

What do you think?

The NBA will play a 72-game season in the 2020-2021 season.  LaMelo Ball’s played 41 games for the Hornets prior to his injury, at this point we don’t know if the injury is season ending.  A couple of websites have decided to move Wolves guard Anthony Edwards in front of Ball for Rookie of the Year due to the injury.  Here are two early considerations:

1. We don’t know if Ball is able to return before the season ends.

2. Ball’s played half of the Hornets scheduled games.

The only recent controversy with Rookie of the Year were guys who sat out a year due to injury and then claiming the prize technically in their sophomore year.  That never bothered me, I cannot remember the player, but I seem to remember an injury during the exhibition season caused him to miss the regular season.  Just as sure as I’m sitting here typing words there will be complaints regardless of Ball or Edwards being named ROY.

Basketball from a fan perspective

Who is most loyal?

On Saturday Mizzou lost it's NCAA match against Oklahoma, Monday evening the Kansas Jayhawks were beaten by Southern Cal.  Beginning Sunday culminating with late Monday several letters from Mizzou fans wanted Cuonzo Martin fired.  After the blowout loss Kansas fans interviewed on one of the local stations were praising Kansas basketball and Bill Self.  Despite the loss they appeared more upbeat than Mizzou fans.  Why does this difference exist, we certainly don’t have enough time to detail all the whys and wherefores but here goes?  These two longtime rivals have played in separate conferences since 2012 when Mizzou left the Big 12 for the SEC.

In Kansas City on the Missouri side of the border our local sports news should be divided but it’s not, it weighs heavily in favor of Kansas.  Disappointment reigns supreme in both states after the losses however Mizzou fans feel the effects worse.  A significant number of Mizzou fans appear to want the coach fired despite the fact Mizzou’s earned an NCAA invite two of the four years he’s been in place.  During this period Mizzou’s won 66 games under Martin, the prior three years they won a total of 27 games and received not one NCAA invitation.  This certainly fails to placate the masses who want Martin gone but it ain’t happening immediately.

Coach has a Top 40 recruiting class arriving in the fall (ESPN.com) and he knows how to recruit which was lacking in the previous coach.  As for the hearts and minds this proud member of Mizzou Nation must give it to the Jayhawks.  Despite the loss and not counting the NCAA anvil hanging over the basketball program they APPEAR more loyal than Mizzou fans.  It really pains me to say that however I must speak the truth.  In closing allow me to pass on this bit of information.  A coach was hired by this university, his first three years the team won a total of 38 games and lost 47, what do you suppose the school did?  They allowed Michael William Krzyzewski better known as Coach K. to remain in place.  Don’t get it confused I’m not saying Martin is the second coming but hold on Mizzou Nation don’t be so quick to escort the coach off the premises.

“I’m on the way!!”

The bracket busting NCAA Tournament’s opening weekend has seen several college prospects looking toward the NBA draft.  None of the players listed have declared for the draft however their names are on several mock draft lists.  Leading most lists is Oklahoma State’s Cade Cunningham number 1, Oregon State sent him home and toward the NBA.  Joining him Illinois guard Ayo Dosunmu whose team was also eliminated over the weekend.

Kai Jones of Texas and James Bouknight of UConn also saw their teams excluded.  Gonzaga, Baylor and USC NBA prospects are still playing as this is written, there are others with eyes on the NBA.  Their teams failed to earn a tournament berth, this includes Zaire Williams of Stanford and Josh Christopher of Arizona State.  These are but a few of the players who might plan on meeting Commissioner Silver in June and giving him a fist-pump.

It’s the pandemic

The number of NBA players succumbing to injuries is mounting as we speak.  The Warriors expected to have Klay Thompson back but that was not to be, he will miss the season.  This list is not complete, but it provides us a list of many.  Spencer Dinwiddie of the Nets and Joel Embiid with the Sixers, the injury bug would next strike the Lakers Anthony Davis.  Markelle Fultz of the Magic and Thomas Bryant of the Wizards.

This past weekend we saw both LeBron James and the pending Rookie of the Year LaMelo Ball also suffering injuries.  Of those named Dinwiddie, Fultz, Bryant and LaMelo have been ruled out for the balance of the season.  We can only fall back on the adage, “Injuries are part of the game” and we must prepare ourselves for them.  Perhaps it just appears an extraordinary number of injuries to key players has occurred thus far this season.

Bits n Pieces

Cam’ Ron Fletcher left Mizzou waiting at the altar, we figured the St. Louis youngster from Vashon High School might possibly head for Mizzou.  That would not occur as Coach Cal and his Kentucky Wildcats prevailed.  As you are aware things didn’t work in the manner the coach wanted or the player.  Fletcher saw little time on the court, suspended then re-instated he’s now entered the transfer pool.  Mizzou would appear out of the running again for the 6-foot 6-inch 215-pound small forward.  My sources inform me Fletcher returns home and enrolls at St. Louis University.  If it should come about it certainly makes sense on his part.

Other rumors indicate the Clippers are reported to be after Lonzo Ball, this shouldn’t be surprising news.  The need for a point guard has existed since they traded Chris Paul to the Rockets in 2017, they want someone desperately to assume the role and Patrick Beverly ain’t the one.  The Clippers chief problem they have no worthy assets to make a trade worthwhile, they are not giving up Kawhi or Paul George.  If the Pelicans took Beverly that would be a backward step, he’s 32 years old, Lonzo’s 23…good luck with this one.

Laker legend gone

Elgin Baylor died on Monday at the age of 86, Baylor played his first two seasons with the Minneapolis Lakers and along with Jerry West became the foundation for the team at the time the franchise located to Los Angeles.  The Minneapolis Lakers made him the top pick in the 1958 NBA Draft, Baylor was an 11 time All Star and NBA MVP.  Standing 6 foot 5 he played small forward throughout his career and his 225 pounds allowed him to contest taller heavier players for the ball.  After his playing career concluded Baylor served as GM of the Clippers, he would be enshrined in the Naismith and College Basketball Halls of Fame.  He was honored again being selected a member of the 35th and 50th Anniversary All-Time Team, Elgin Baylor R.I.P.

Contrasting

During the 2008-2009 NBA season the Houston Rockets won 22 games in a row, this streak ran from Jan 29-March 18.  Contrast that win total with the 2020-2021 Rockets who are losers of 20 games in a row and pending.  The Rockets are now tied with 4 other clubs for the most consecutive losses.

A bump in the road or a boulder?

The weekend was not good for several college teams, I can make the same statement about my Lakers.  By now you are aware LeBron James sustained a high ankle sprain, he’s out until he returns.  I wrote it in that manner because we have no idea at this point the timeframe on his healing.  If fully mended Anthony Davis should return around April 2 which should help but there is a dilemma.  Do these injuries represent a bump in the road or a boulder for the Lakers?  I returned briefly to the past, I noted 6 consecutive losing seasons were posted by the Lakers.

The 2012-2013 season was the last one they finished above .500 prior to last season’s championship.  I can remember the doom and gloom during that period hoping the Lakers would draft THAT player or acquire THAT player in trade or free agency.  This is revisionist history I contend the Lakers would have finished above .500 in LeBron’s first season without injury.  All I can state at this point for Laker Nation, stay strong…what appears difficult will eventually become better.  I'm not comfortable waiting 10 years for another championship however I did it previously (2010).

Wow, this is amazing information

Did you know Kansas City Missouri experienced professional basketball prior to the NBA Kings, this was also before the 1961-1962 Spurs of the American Basketball League?  As occurs sometimes while conducting research you uncover unknown information, that was the case here.  Examination indicates the Kansas City Hi-Spots played the 1950-1951 season in the National Professional Basketball League.  Never heard of the NPBL, neither had I prior to reading the history?  Why is this a major rather than minor league you might ask, the explanation follows?

Three of the teams in this 8-team league were former NBA teams.  At the time of the merger forming today’s NBA there were objections, New York interest were not keen on the idea of Waterloo Iowa, Sheboygan Wisconsin and Anderson Indiana competing with the big city Knicks and Celtics.  The three teams dropped out of the newly formed NBA and began play in the NPBL, but it wouldn’t be lasting, the upstart league ceased operations in January 1951.  The Hi-Spots played their games at the Pla-Mor Ballroom located at the corner of Linwood and Main, the building was demolished in 1972.

The offenders have escaped

Sunday the Rockets find themselves losers of 20 games in a row the worst in the NBA, they are not a good team but part of it is not their fault.  It’s my belief this team is suffering a lingering hangover from the effects of Morey/D’Antoni.  This “play” was orchestrated by Daryl Morey and directed by Mike D’Antoni and the offenders have escaped.  Remember back to last season when these two decided to play small ball, they concluded a 6-foot 5-inch center could win in the NBA.

After the team was playoff eliminated in September 2020 D’Antoni decided he didn’t want to coach the Rockets any longer, he resigned.  A month later Morey announced he was stepping down as general manager and followed D'Antoni out of the building.  Morey is the analytics guy who favors 3-point shooting over mid-range jumpers according to one source.  James Hardin could see the handwriting on the wall it’s likely that was the basis for him forcing a trade.  The architects of the Rockets have left the building and Houston for greener pastures, Morey with the Sixers president of basketball operations and D’Antoni a Nets assistant.

March victory story

There are far too many stories to do justice for every school during this time.  This one stood out for a variety of reasons; it is unlikely we ever hear Jason Preston’s name in the NBA draft.   The 6-4 guard was a contributing factor in Ohio’s 62-58 upset win over Virginia with his 11 points 13 rebounds and 8 assists.  Back in high school few would have believed he’d even be in college on a scholarship, Preston averaged 2 points a game in high school, yes that figure is correct.

His freshman year at Ohio it was 6 points a game as he played reserve minutes.  The 2019-20 season as a starter would be his breakout year, he raised that average to 16.8 points a game, his junior year it was 16.3.  How did he arrive at this point…thanks in part to social media?  He posted his highlights on Twitter and received offers from Ohio and Longwood University.  Preston is identified on at least one mock draft site; we have no idea if he is a surprise draft pick becomes a free-agent pickup or Europe.  Whatever occurs in the future we should not be surprised how it unfolds for Preston.

Mizzou disappointment

Am I disappointed…of course I am, several “fans” believe the loss to Oklahoma is pointed directly at coach Cuonzo Martin, some even voiced their belief the coach should be fired?  Firing Martin is not an answer, the coach wasn’t on the floor taking sometimes questionable shots, he didn’t turn the ball over either.  I try to refrain from criticizing coaching strategy and for good reason, this is far different from the 5th and 6th grade teams I once coached.

I laugh out loud reading the comments of several of these “couch” coaches.  They would lead you to believe they know all there is to know about coaching basketball especially at the collegiate level.  I read far too many letters saying fire Cuonzo.  Who replaces him, another coach fired someplace else?  Unless a quality assistant from SOMEWHERE is hired leave Cuonzo in place at least through next season.  These critics tend to forget Mizzou began the season as a question mark by the so-called experts.  They exceeded expectations; Mizzou was expected to finish in the bottom half of the SEC.  This view doesn’t lessen the pain of losing, it becomes for the coach, what have you done for me lately?  How about earning an NCAA appearance after missing last season although brief?

Mizzou will lose Dru Smith, Jeremiah Tilmon and others who made contributions to a winning season now.  Mizzou has a Top 40 recruiting class according to ESPN.com and several other .com sites arriving in August.  I will attempt to refrain myself from becoming too excited, freshmen sometimes play like freshmen so my expectations will be subdued until there is a determination they can play at this level.

Basketball from a fan perspective

“There is no joy in Mudville, mighty Casey has struck out!”

The above title is one of the lines from the 1888 poem titled Casey at the Bat.  Well, the Lakers just might have struck out as well, already missing Anthony Davis for several weeks we believed the storm could be weathered.  On Saturday afternoon LeBron leaves the game against the Hawks and an MRI reveals a high ankle sprain, out for an indefinite period.  Most of Laker Nation is crying at this point, they believed in survival until the other star returned.  With both stars out the future the playoffs certainly look somewhat bleak at this point.

Oklahoma was an 8, Mizzou questionable

Once again Mizzou figured out a method to rip my heart out again, Mizzou was a 9 seed and Oklahoma was an 8 so the outcome wasn’t really an upset.  Final score read Oklahoma 72 Mizzou 68, it’s the manner they manage to lose is what is most concerning to me and I’m sure Mizzou Nation.  It’s déjà vu all over again, Mizzou managed to squander a half time lead, for several reasons Mizzou appears unable to sustain its effort for a full game.  The trend seems to have occurred over the last 10 games or so.  They cannot win games shooting 37.9% from the floor as a team, oh well guess it's on to next season.

March 19, 1966

The college basketball world would change forever on March 19, 1966.  That was the date Don Haskins and his Texas Western (Texas-El Paso) Miners beat Adolph Rupp’s Kentucky Wildcats for the NCAA Championship.  I’ve not read a great deal about Haskins; I can only speculate he might have been more concerned about winning over the criticism for his decision.

Haskins would become the first coach at a Division I school to send out 5 black starters. HBCU schools had fielded all black starting lineups however most state and private schools up to that period had done no such thing.  Haskins Texas Western team would face Kentucky for the championship, at that period Kentucky had an all-white roster.  In a landmark game Texas Western beat Kentucky 72-65 one of the historic events which changed the basketball landscape of America.

Words

Coach Bechler:

Just because you are a FROSH doesn’t mean you can’t be a leader.

Just because you are a SOPH doesn’t mean you learned it all last year.

Just because you are a JR you get to be on the varsity.

Just because you are SR doesn’t mean you get to start.

I spotted this on social media, I am unfamiliar with his name, but we guess he coaches at the high school level.  No matter what the level this could apply to a college team as well, word.

Is there anyone else?

Like many of you our focus has been on LaMelo Ball as well it should.  His game has captured us, he’s played far better than we believed in his rookie season with the Hornets.  Part of the reason we don’t see top draft choice Anthony Edwards is his team.  The Wolves are the absolute worst franchise in the NBA, I didn’t mince words they have no competition.  Take that back maybe the Kings but even they…. oh well back to the subject at hand Anthony Edwards.

Edwards is experiencing a reasonably good rookie year; he’s averaging double figures in scoring so we know he can get buckets.  The Wolves with the top pick could have chosen Ball but decided in favor of Edwards, there are fans in the Twin Cities who might believe they made a mistake.  The only negative on Edwards’s part (besides playing on a lousy team) is his field goal percentage.  He could stand to raise his shooting 5-7 points.  As for the draft the Wolves have Rubio and Russell two-point guards on the roster, it would have served little to draft LaMelo.

The rumor mill no longer contains the name Kyle Kuzma, he’s staying put for now, Kuzma has managed as they might say to re-invent himself.  The problem is not all his, to play starter minutes your 3rd year and a reserve role your 4th an adjustment was required.  After struggle most of last season in 2020-2021 Kuzma appears to have found his groove.  He probably realizes "I need to do those things which aid the team."  It's scoring one night, defense the next and more.

Laker Nation

The Lakers won their Thursday night match versus the Hornets 116-105, I came away from the game with lasting admiration of rookie LaMelo Ball.  Ball scored 26 points on 55.6% from the floor 40% from 3 and 80% from the line.  He also managed to grab 5 rebounds and dish out 7 assists.  The 6 turnovers registered can be attributed to the tough Laker defense.  The Hornets outshot the Lakers (49.4 to 48.4) however the outcome was never in doubt.

The Lakers appeared in control much of the evening.  The Hornets are one of a few NBA teams in an advantageous position for the future, Charlotte is likely not a destination for free agents unless the team shows signs of improved play.  As for the draft that’s another matter, wise evaluation of young talent could prove greatly beneficial to the Hornets.  A wise draft could be keys to winning, now if only we could muffle a certain person, oh well.

1971

The average price of a home 50 years ago in the United States was $25,250.00, in addition to buying a home you also purchased a Dodge Charger writing a check for $3,579.00.  You drove your new automobile to a service station and filled it up, the pump price was 40 cents a gallon for gasoline.  As for your house payment you wrote a check and applied an 8 cents stamp to the envelope before placing it in a mailbox.

For entertainment you purchased movie tickets for you and your wife, the cost was $3.00, $1.50 apiece.  Why the fixation on the year you ask, it was March 18, 1971 Drake beat Notre Dame in the NCAA Tournament?  It would be 50 years before the Iowa school would win another tournament game, it would be 50 years to the date, March 18, 2021.  Drake beat Wichita State in an NCAA First Four game 53-52, no matter how far Drake advances rest assured the hope is they win another game before 50 years passes.

Too many games

The blog lacks space and time to cover all the NCAA games, the first day up till 6:00 p.m. Central Time has proven quite interesting.  The Ohio State beaten by Oral Roberts, a number 15 seed beating a number 2…. but wait there’s more.  Number 12 Oregon State sent number 5 Tennessee home earlier than expected.  We can guess that’s why its called March Madness, anybody can beat the team they are facing and its only required once.

Guilty

I admit I’m guilty, how about you?  There are several college and NBA teams I can just sit and watch the game develop, those are the neutral one’s I have no concern who wins or loses.  On the other hand, there are teams I root against, I don’t dislike individual team members for the most part the coach is okay too.  For a variety of sometimes irrational reasons, I want that team and sometimes the coach to lose.  Do I dare name the offenders…no way but I am not alone?

I know you too are guilty although some of you might be more vocal than me.  Okay you twisted my arm, I confess.  Allow me to state it’s not any of the athletes I have issues it’s the team and its image.  In the NBA it’s the Clippers, perhaps when their arena is built, and they move I will probably change my outlook.  Instead of Inglewood it’s my view the Pacific Northwest might be a fantastic move on owner Steve Ballmer’s part.  There is only one college team and it ain't Kentucky although the first letter of this school does begin with a K., okay it's Kansas and Bill Self, no need to go any further.  Call me a hater, over the years that's probably a nice term based on several I've received.

Under review

The headline is the term you often hear a public address announcer make during an NFL or NBA game.  Well, my column on Richard Pitino is under review by yours truly.  I hope to point out there are no issues on my part with the coach, he needs to feed his family like all of us.  My issue with colleges and the NBA often they don’t give the new guy a chance.  They would rather hire a veteran no matter their past record, I mentioned Pitino being fired.

That is not a question unless you are hiring a guy fired at 3 or 4 locations, it does not require one to walk around displaying a gigantic F on their clothing indicating “I’ve been fired.”  Naturally with any endeavor there are exceptions, Wichita State handed the head coaching job to an assistant.  In the NBA we could state the Hornets and Thunder moved assistants up to head coach.  Those moves and others are the exception rather than a general rule.  Athletic directors and NBA general managers would rather hire that veteran guy despite his past record.

Basketball from a fan perspective

Richard Pitino

This is not exasperation aimed at Pitino as much as the system allowing it to take place.  Pitino was hired as head coach at Minnesota in 2013, he was fired March 2021.  What occurred in between time, his won-loss record is an okay 141-123 .534 winning percentage.  Only 4 of his 8 seasons produced a winning record, under Pitino’s leadership Minnesota was on a roller coaster in the win loss department.  I’m unsure if we can point to a single outstanding except his first at the helm, that team was crowned NIT Champions in 2014.

Now for the tragic portion of this story, can we point to a single crowning achievement Pitino managed to accomplish?   Paul Weir was at the same point, his record wasn’t terrible but there was nothing exciting we can point toward.  Weir’s last season New Mexico finished 6-16 and 2-15 in the Mountain West Conference.  Here we have two coaches neither of whom is terrible however the circumstances still appear strange.  Weir fired and less than 24 hours later Pitino with a losing record at his former post is hired.  Why not an assistant out there giving him the opportunity to coach rather than recycle a coach who really hasn't proven he can win consistently.

Sad news

Former NBA player Shawn Bradley suffered a tragic accident in January, riding his bicycle near his home Bradley was struck by an automobile and suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury.  News reports indicate he is paralyzed but is going through rehabilitation.  Bradley was the number 2 pick in the 1993 draft by the Sixers, he retired in 2005 as a member of the Mavs.  When drafted at the time Bradley was the tallest player in the NBA until Yao Ming arrived in 2002.  Both players were listed as 7 feet 6 inches in height, as additional updates are provided you will be informed.

Travelin’ Man

The late Rick Nelson had a 1961 pop tune titled Travelin’ Man, the first stanza of the song goes like this: “I'm a travelin' man and I've made a lot of stops All over the world.”  That could just as easily be sung by Trevor Ariza, the Thunder traded him to the Heat on Wednesday.  The Heat will become the 11th team he’s played for, let’s do a count of his travels across America.  Ariza’s played for the Rockets twice and the Wizards twice so here goes:

2004-2004 Knicks

2006-2007 Magic

2007-2009 Lakers

2009-2010 Rockets

2010-2012 Hornets

2012-2014 Wizards

2014-2018 Rockets

2018 Suns

2018-2019 Wizards

2019-2020 Kings

2020 Blazers

2021 Heat

As you can see the 6 -foot 8 small forward has traveled the length and breath of the nation, on the other hand it could prove his continued value to the receiving team.  To clear some confusion Ariza was traded to the Thunder on November 27 however he never reported to them or appeared in any games.

Chicago first

If you are under age 40 you probably believe the Bulls are Chicago’s only NBA team.  That’s easy to understand, the Bulls especially during the Jordan years dominated the NBA and came close to overshadowing history.  The Bulls were an expansion team that came into existence in 1966 however the city had a preceding team.  The Bulls reflect a second expansion team the first was the Packers, you’ve never heard of them we suppose and there is a reason why.

That team now is the Washington Wizards but more on that later.  The Chicago Packers won 18 games and lost 62 while playing in the International Amphitheater in the 1961-1962 season, they finished in last place in the Western Division.  Despite having the Rookie of the Year in Walt Bellamy it was said their play stunk as much as the stockyards adjacent to the arena.  The 1962-1963 season witnessed the team moving to the Chicago Coliseum and their won-loss record improved as they changed nicknames.

Gone was the Packers and memories of the stockyards, the team was rebranded as the Zephyrs.  Terry Dischinger was named Rookie of the Year the same honor Bellamy earned the prior year.  The handwriting was on the wall, this history occurred prior to the explosion of popularity the NBA would later see occur.  Year three of their existence saw the team move to Baltimore where they became the Bullets.  From Baltimore it was the D.C. suburbs and finally in the city.  In 1997 the team’s name was changed to the Wizards and that ends our story.
