This is a shocking development. Earlier reports suggested the NBA had found no wrongdoing by the Clippers, Kawhi Leonard, or any connection to the defunct company Aspiration. That was what I wrote a few weeks ago, well that has changed. That account was then; this account is now. On Wednesday, word broke that the NBA was lowering the boom. The Clippers are being fined $30 million, and owner Steve Ballmer will be suspended for one year.

In addition president of business operations Gillian Zucker also receives a one-year suspension without pay, while president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank receives six months without pay. The Clippers must forfeit first-round picks in 2029, 2030, 2031, 2032, and 2033. Add the picks sent to Oklahoma City to acquire Paul George and secure Kawhi Leonard, and the total climbs to 10 first-round picks. Kawhi Leonard is reportedly required to repay $700,000 in restitution for receiving improper benefits. In addition the NBA will monitor front office operations of the Clippers for the next 5 years. As for the infamous uncle/agent Dennis Robertson also did not escape the NBA’s wrath: “Dennis Robertson will be prohibited from conducting business or otherwise engaging with NBA teams and their affiliates on behalf of or with respect to any player, employee, or other league or team personnel.” His suspension will last five years. To date, Kawhi Leonard appears to be the only party admitting guilt, while owner Steve Ballmer and perhaps others may appeal their suspensions.

This is a major black eye for the NBA however one they eventually will overcome, but I believe the punishment is justified. Over the years, many have described Adam Silver as a weak commissioner. Whatever occurs regarding the appeals, Silver has shown he can act forcefully when required. Rest assured, there will remain defenders who will say they saw nothing wrong with the actions of Ballmer and company however it makes little difference in what they think or believe. The NBA operating in its best interest made a historic decision. Finally, Kawhi Leonard might be in the best shape of all, no suspension which should have occurred.
