Draft Lottery
Who goes number one in the 2017 draft is the question now the order has been established; it’s Celtics, Lakers and Sixers. We must wait to actually determine the selection. I continue to believe the Celtics will select Markelle Fultz the Lakers might be a totally different matter. Given the opportunity to draft Lonzo Ball, Josh Jackson or De’Aaron Fox we must wait and see. Although this draft like must in recent years is young it’s stocked with a vast amount of potential talent.
Stepping up
Game 7 in TD Boston Garden the Celtics should be expected to win…..maybe. I always compare games of this type as heavyweight boxing matches. The Celtics delivered the knockout blow 115-105 despite the 38 points Wizards guard Bradley Beal scored. As for the Celtics they were led by Isaiah Thomas however he was ably assisted by Kelly Olynyk. Yes I said Olynyk, the Celtic reserve came off the bench scoring a career high 26 points. Next up for Boston the Cavaliers of Cleveland.
“I’m tired”!
Perhaps the Wizards plain ran out of gas, all five starters played heavy minutes with Beal topping out at 46 minutes. Three reserve players with 16, 11 and 3 minutes that’s all. We could make the same statement regarding Russell Westbrook however his issue occurred during the season. Playing heavy minutes in an attempt to tie the Oscar Robertson mark its likely he too ran out of energy once the playoffs began.
Witness the Rockets and James Harden, key to their success was worn down from heavy minutes. I’m sure if we questioned Westbrook, Harden and the Wizards starters it’s likely they don’t admit it but consider this fact. By the time the playoffs roll around teams have played 100+ games counting exhibition and 82 regular season. The NBA is not going to reduce the number of games played but just to put this in perspective, Team A loses and sometimes the reason might be simple they are tired.
His shot
We’ve watched Lonzo Ball’s funny looking shot all season long at UCLA; it appears he’s shooting it sidearm. I’m no “shot-doctor” so I certainly am making no claim Ball’s shot is not effective or might not work in the NBA. A number of players have arrived in the NBA over the years with “funny looking shots.” Off the top of my head Reggie Miller is the first player that comes to mind.
Reggie could shoot the basketball maybe it was his form that always looks strange to me. Michael Jordan’s Bull teams had Bill Cartwright at center during several championship runs. See if you can locate him on YouTube and you will discover what I’m talking about. As for Shaq its clear why he most often dunked the basketball his shot looked terrible. San Francisco
Call me a purist if you wish, there are some issues which require correction. The Warriors name needs to be re-introduced. Once the Warriors move across the bay I hope to see resurrection of the iconic “The City” jersey. You say it’s not that big a deal, probably not but it would ease my conscious.
Most of us are Golden is attached to the State of California, after the team moved in 1971 to Oakland. Teams are not always named after the city they play. As an example; Arizona Cardinals, Texas Rangers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Minnesota Wolves. See where I’m going with this in the instance not the state precedes the team name Golden State says nothing, It might be better if they were the California Warriors.

Lose some win some
For the first time in recent memory Mizzou has been in the mix this year for the nations top high school prospects. Part of the success was predicated on signing Michael Porter Jr. the number one prospect in the Class of 2017. Porter Jr. and several other prospects allowed Mizzou to land in the Top 10 in the nation. Trevon Duval was a 5-star prospect who attended IMG Academy in Bradenton Florida.
There were a number of “blue blood” programs across the nation after his services. The point guard finally made his decision known, he‘s on the way to Duke. Duval should settle the point guard position one that’s been somewhat shaky in the past for Coach K. Mizzou loses one but gains another, 6-10 center Jeremiah Tilmon announced on Monday he’s going to be a Tiger. Tilmon is a 4-star prospect from Coach Martin’s home town (East St. Louis). The only question now is the status of Jontay Porter.
Okay
The two main sources I peruse for draft information have changed their view on the Lakers choice. Point guard De‘Aaron Fox from Kentucky and Kansas shooting guard Josh Jackson are their choices, is Lonzo Ball out of the picture not likely? This is the key; the draft lottery held tonight will solidify team positions however the players selected is another matter.
New faces in new places
It seems at the time new arenas that serve as home to NBA teams the college game is not far behind. Barclays Center in Brooklyn and Golden 1 Center in Sacramento opened their doors to the college game. The same scenario will apply once Chase Center opens the arena will serve as host for the 2022 NCAA Men’s Basketball West Regional’s. This will be the first time San Francisco has served as host city for the NCAA’s since 1939.
Further east and one year sooner the Red Wings and Pistons will make room in Little Caesars Arena for college basketball too. The arena will host the first and second rounds of the 2021 Men’s Basketball Tournament. So far the yet to be named Milwaukee arena has announced no plans other than Bucks basketball. Marquette and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the city, the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus is 2 hours drive-time from Milwaukee. Most likely we’ll see the arena host college basketball games at some point as well.
99% of the time
A large number of freshmen and sophomores enter the NBA draft every season. We have no idea who might be ready and who needs additional seasoning. One of those I believe requires additional work is Tacko Fall. You remember the 7-6 youngster who plays for the University of Central Florida. Playing for a new coach and adjusting to the speed of the game Fall was light years ahead of his freshmen year. Despite the superlatives tossed his direction Fall is not ready for the rigors of the NBA.
Thanks to cable I saw practically every game the youngster played this past season--true it was television but the warts were evident. Fall is a natural at blocking the basketball, the negatives his strength and his offensive game. In reverse order in my mind it’s not critical he scores with a good NBA point guard he might average 11 or 12 ppg. Although he checks in at 310 pounds his lack of upper body strength has witnessed smaller and lighter players out rebounding him. Fall needs at the very least one additional season of competitive basketball. What do I know I’m just a rabid basketball fan?

If you are knowledgeable regarding Shaquille O’Neal he’s always been involved in law enforcement. He’s been a reserve deputy sheriff and has even gone on patrol on occasion. Shaq’s indicates he might run for sheriff in 2020 giving no indication whether its Georgia or Florida, he owns homes in both states. The big guy is an unpaid comic but I believe he’s serious.

Basketball from a fans perspective
I missed it
Unfortunately work prevented me from viewing the Spurs-Warriors game. If you attended the game or saw it on television you have more insight than me, you might anyway. I walked into the break-room it was the middle portion of the 3rd quarter the Spurs were clearly in command by 20+ points. Imagine my shock and amazement, at a point work slowed I took out my IPhone to check the final score and once again found myself stunned, final score 113-111.
Nicknames
Oftentimes a player’s nickname supersedes his given name, on other occasions the nickname becomes that player. In baseball we had the legendary Babe Ruth and Babe was not his given name, it was George Herman Ruth. A number are familiar with Penny Hardaway few realize his given name is Anfernee. He was Earvin until a Lansing sportswriter witnessed how he distributed the basketball, if was if it was magic. He would rename the youngster Magic for his newspaper while Earvin was still in high school. The nickname stuck with Ruth, Hardaway and Johnson over the course of their careers. While others the nickname became identified with them, Flash is Dwayne Wade, Pistol Pete is Pete Maravich, there are others:

You’d be reading all day unless I excluded a number of players. In the case of others like Shaquille O’Neal he’s got so many nicknames I chose the two familiar to most of us. One more rule, the Neil Rule you cannot give yourself a nickname someone must bestow on you. I once worked with Neil and he stated that was his rule which I’ve adopted. King James is suspect since he nicknamed himself.
Should I stay or should I go
This is the 1982 by the punk rock group Clash but also the dilemma facing a great number of early entry NBA prospects. A number require two maybe three years of college play (See Tacko Fall later). There becomes the problem you return to college and risk injury with could end your career or impact your draft stock. What is the answer you ask, I’m happy you ask because I have it.
The prospect needs to seek wise counsel not from dad or Uncle Joe someone who has no skin in the game. That could be an agent or front office person surely they would provide you clear evidence if you are ready for the NBA. So there you have it sounds simple on the surface and it is---seek wise counsel. The real dilemma a number will not and leave them in the Twilight Zone un-drafted and unable to return to college.
Duke curse
You know it, successful college player failure in the NBA. Certainly applied to J.J. Redick great shooter at Duke in the NBA another story. Redick had NBA talent but there was an adjustment and the right team. Redick was the 11th pick in the first round of the 2006 draft by the Magic. It took awhile for him to blossom but once he begins to show signs he was traded to the Bucks.
The Bucks traded Redick to the Clippers in 2013 where his career took off. He became the spot up shooter the team needed a reliable 3-point specialist. With free agency coming up this summer there is speculation he might be headed elsewhere. Redick wants a pay raise but so do Blake Griffin and Chris Paul. It’s possible the Clippers can resign all three players but is that the direction they intend to travel? July 1 will arrive soon we will see.

Home elsewhere
It’s long been the belief Phil Jackson had issues with Carmelo Anthony. Over the course of his tenure with the Knicks he’s established this view so its not exactly hidden The latest news broke Friday evening with PJ saying “Carmelo should waive his no trade clause.” Carmelo needs to find a home elsewhere justified or not PJ wants him gone. We cannot read PJ’s mind but he must believe the Knicks are “stuck in mud” primarily due to Carmelo.
Construction update
In discussing new arenas in old places I don’t believe an opening date was provided for any of the buildings. In Detroit Little Caesars Arena owned by the NHL Red Wings will open in the fall of 2017. As was indicated earlier the Pistons will share dates in the downtown arena. In Milwaukee the yet unnamed arena for the Bucks has a planned 2018 opening.
Chase Center new home of the Warriors may have had an earlier beginning however lawsuits resulted in a late construction start, Chase will open in 2019. I’m going to include non-NBA Seattle in this report due to plains, as most are aware Seattle desperately wants to return to the NBA. The city has not one, not two but three proposals to consider.

This might be rags to riches story nobody wanted Derrick White when he graduated from high school. No offers to play basketball anywhere however fate stepped in and aided his pursuit. A coach he’d become acquainted was hired at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs an NCAA Division II program. He played at UCCS for three years and one year at Division I Colorado.
Presto in four years he’s become an NBA prospect, the guy who couldn’t get any notice excelled at UCCS and later at Colorado. He followed this up by stand out performance at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament and now is projected to be a second round draft pick. Although his high school record was outstanding at 6-1 and 150 pounds it was easy to overlook him. White now stands 6-5 and checks in at a solid 200 pounds.
I’m a Laker fan
This reminder is provided once again for many of you. I have been a Laker fan since I was a little kid; I have remained a fan despite a downturn in play over several seasons. That is indeed the case currently, they are not good. There are a number of other NBA teams I follow I don’t believe I would consider myself a fan.
Case in point the Rockets, I enjoyed the re-birth of James Harden and what he’d done for his team during the season. I didn’t believe they were a championship team but one I enjoyed seeing play, I wanted them to advance as far as possible. No Tony Parker no Kawhi Leonard and the Rockets couldn’t handle the Spurs. Friends how does this news impact the Lakers? I have no idea I believe the discussion was about the Spurs-Rockets.
Bits n Pieces
Could Chicago support two NBA teams, I believe that’s possible. For years the city has supported the Cubs and the White Sox, there are divided loyalties. Cubs’ fans are not Sox fans and vice-versa. One NFL team but even that’s not always been the case, the Chicago Cardinals represented the city in the NFL along with the Bears. In 1959 the team moved to St. Louis and later Arizona. I’m sure the same issue would prevail if there were a second team in the “Second City.” The only issue there is doubts if Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf would okay an NBA rival with Chicago on the jersey.
I just checked a list of pending 2017 NBA free-agents. The list is quite interesting and several are impressive. Derrick Rose, Chris Paul and Kyle Lowry are just a few of the names on the list. I dare not make any predictions of the destination of any of the players. Last year my family was returning to Kansas City from the Dallas area. On I-35 in Oklahoma City a friend sent a text message. The text notified me Kevin Durant was going to leave the Thunder and sign with the Warriors. You are probably thinking I was texting while driving not true. My wife was driving the vehicle and I was actually in the back seat.
Speaking of the draft it should be noted Anthony Bennett the number one pick in the 2013 NBA Draft was playing in Turkey until recently the team has released him. Number two pick Victor Oladipo now with the Thunder has been a serviceable player but nothing extraordinary. The draft might have been considered weak but consider who went later that year. Gianni’s Antetokounmpo a.k.a. The Greek Freak and Rudy Gobert. Giannis was the 15th pick and Gobert the 27th, sometimes the draft becomes “I hope he can play.”

The combine
We’ve heard some negative comment on the NBA Draft Combine it was Kevin Durant followed by Kentucky Coach John Calipari agreeing with the statement. Its possible Durant might have ill feeling about the combine based on reports. It was announced Durant couldn’t bench press 185 pounds at the 2007 combine. As for 2017 he said; “If you’re guaranteed to be a 1st round pick why show up?”
The ESPN opening was quite interesting. Over Durant’s photo were the words Too Thin, then a shot of Isaiah Thomas with the words too short. Finally a shot of Step Curry with the words too small beneath his photo. So there you have it, some guys might have a requirement to attend the combine to prove they are not too thin, too short or too thin.
What could have been?
Life sometimes deals us a bad hand; the Celtics are in the playoffs. They have a nucleus of talented young players but what might have been is mind boggling. Yahoo NBA page published an account of 7 NBA players who died too soon; the Celtics had two of the seven. Maryland forward Len Bias was the second pick in the 1986 draft, Bias had star written all over him. He was a 6-9 210 pound small forward. Prior to Game Six at the AT&T Center the television camera captured a Spurs fan carrying an AARP sign.
The bottom portion contained the photos of Manu Ginobili (age 39) Tony Parker (34) and a third Spur which I couldn’t see. It could have been Pau Gasol (36) Joel Anthony or David Lee (both 34). The Spurs are an old NBA team yet continue to win and win and win. As this is written Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard both on the sidelines with injuries they are performing a beat down on the Rockets. The Spurs won the game 114-75 and the series 4-2.
Croatian Connection
Ivica Zubac has the size (7-1 240 pounds) and he has the desire. The question remains is he the Laker center of the future? It’s clear the Lakers believe he is the future, is he going to make fans forget Chamberlain, Abdul Jabbar or Shaq? I doubt that but I believe 2017-18 will show even more improvement in his play. The biggest take-away for me he is defensive minded, his offense is work in progress as his total game.
The Lakers don’t need Zubac to score they need him to block shots, clog the lane and snatch rebounds. Last season the Lakers had problems scoring but for the most part their problems were defensive. I hope Zubac plans on Summer League play, the only advantage Mozgov has at this point is a larger contract I could foresee Zubac in a role similar to Marc Gasol of the Grizzlies. Imagine this Zubac loves being a Laker; he’s been a Kobe and Laker fan since he was a child.

We’ve heard some negative comment on the NBA Draft Combine it was Kevin Durant followed by Kentucky Coach John Calipari agreeing with the statement. Its possible Durant might have ill feeling about the combine based on reports. It was announced Durant couldn’t bench press 185 pounds at the 2007 combine. As for 2017 he said; “If you’re guaranteed to be a 1st round pick why show up?”
The ESPN opening was quite interesting. Over Durant’s photo were the words Too Thin, then a shot of Isaiah Thomas with the words too short. Finally a shot of Step Curry with the words too small beneath his photo. So there you have it, some guys might have a requirement to attend the combine to prove they are not too thin, too short or too thin.
What could have been?
Life sometimes deals us a bad hand; the Celtics are in the playoffs. They have a nucleus of talented young players but what might have been is mind boggling. Yahoo NBA page published an account of 7 NBA players who died too soon; the Celtics had two of the seven. Maryland forward Len Bias was the second pick in the 1986 draft, Bias had star written all over him. He was a 6-9 210 pound small forward. Basketball from a fans perspective
Surrounded
On Thursdays’ ESPN coverage of the draft combine the camera captured a shoot of Kentucky Coach John Calipari. We must presume Cal was in attendance to check on the numerous (a reported 9) Kentucky players being evaluated in the combine. A covey of media many with microphones and tape recorders descended on the coach, there was no volume so we have no idea of his response.

LaVar Ball’s had his 15 minutes of fame for me. At first he was interesting this over the top booster of his basketball playing family. Then it began the posturing and self promotion of his son’s and eventually his BBB brand. “I could lock down Michael Jordan or words to that affect.” Somebody checked his college scoring 2.2 ppg which is downright laughable. Then Ball began a war of words with a number of former NBA players. It seemed Ball never turned down any opportunity at microphones were thrust in his face.
Then the shoe, the $495 basketball shoe his BBB brand launched. Thanks to ESPN and other media for maintaining LaVar Ball on our television screens. Lately it was reported Kobe Bryant was mentoring Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas and several other players. Questioned about Kobe; “I don’t need no advice from Kobe.” Well Mr. Ball I intend to refrain from writing any future stories on you or your shoes. Lonzo is a different story once he arrives in the NBA he becomes fair game for positive or critical commentary.
“Braggin’ Rights”
Unless you live in Missouri or Illinois the headline might be unfamiliar to you. Big 10 Illinois and SEC Mizzou met every December to play basketball. This series was first begun in 1980 and has been played every year since except 1982. Illinois has won the last four matches, prior to that time Mizzou had won four straight, Illinois leads the All-Time series 31-16. Attendance has fallen the last few years probably attributed to Mizzou’s dismal play. Mizzou’s AD Jim Sterk is addressing the issue hoping to begin an advertising campaign for the game. This is something unnecessary in years past.

I’ve finished crying and wailing for now, the Missouri Valley Conference failed to add UMKC to replace Wichita State. Maybe this might not have been the best move anyway; the Horizon League is exploring teams to replace Valpo leaving for the Mo Valley. The Western Athletic Conference is a step up for UMKC however there is a major issue in my mind. T-R-A-V-E-L, Kansas City lying in the middle of the nation must fly to Utah Valley, Seattle University and CSU Bakersfield. UMKC is likely tied by contract to the WAC but certainly should consider a move in the future. As for the Horizon League the furthest travel from Kansas City might be the three Ohio schools.

Basketball from a fans perspective
His rocking chair
I’m sure Manu Ginobili returned to his rocking chair after the game. The Spurs guard is
39-years old certainly an age when most in the NBA are retired or at least considering retirement. They (you know who they are) claim it’s easier to play offense as you age versus defense, you don’t have the legs you once had. The offensive player knows where he's going on the floor. Well Ginobili put all that thought to rest when he blocked an attempted shot by The Beard. NBA.com says “It was a game-saving block” so much for that age thing.

I don’t know Kevin Durant, never seen him play in person only on television. I must do as you would glean information from a select few members of the media and a few NBA players. Now and then I read or hear something that causes me to scratch my head; “Did he really say that?” Kendrick Perkins once a teammate of Kevin Durant is the culprit in this instance.
“They back (Westbrook) on talking terms…. I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes back to Oklahoma.” Okay they are back to talking---good, I have a related question. Why---why would Durant return to OKC, this is no slam at the city or the state however he’s from the D.C. area. It would seem to me Metro Washington D.C. might be a destination of choice over Oklahoma. As I said at the beginning I don’t know the guy, never met him.

Kelly Dwyer of Yahoo Sports claims the ZO2 LaVar Balls shoe had sales slightly below 300 in initial sales. I’m shocked even 20 would be sold due to the enormous cost ($500) associated with the shoe. If you were to purchase a LeBron, Curry or Kobe shoe you could say they have standing due to the players who wore them.
It should be interesting over the next few months to check on sales periodically. I guess I can say with conviction; “Never be surprised at what and where people might spend their disposable income. Darren Rovell ESPN’s finance guru claims LaVar Ball might be playing this in the correct manner. He says; “The shoes won’t be available until November Ball can gauge sales without a great deal of financial expenditure on his part.”

The Jazz will keep their name, if you are a certain age you only know the Jazz in Salt Lake City. Salt Lake City is actually their second home the franchise was born in New Orleans and later moved to Utah hence the name Jazz. It was a reflection on New Orleans connection to the cities rich history to that form of music. A number of franchise moves have involved name changes not the case here. Once New Orleans gained another NBA team ownership of the Jazz were approached about the name returning to New Orleans their response; “Thanks but no thanks.”
Dr. James A. Naismith wrote 13 rules for playing basket ball. Notice the space in the word because the original basket was just that one that once held peaches. Not only that an original ball closely resembled a soccer ball because that‘s likely what it was. The original 13 rules were purchased last year for $3.8 million by a private citizen and are housed at Kansas University. Dr. Naismith was the first Kansas basketball coach and the only one with a losing record (55-60).

Basketball from a fans perspective
Decision made
After considering several schools the Missouri Valley Conference has made a decision. Wichita State made the decision to leave after the season concluded the conference required a replacement to continue as a 10-team conference. The Valparaiso Crusaders will leave the Horizon League for the Missouri Valley effective July 1. Valpo has a basketball history beginning play in 1917, the basketball program didn’t register much on the competitive radar until the 1990’s.
In 1990 Homer Drew took over the program, he would lead the Crusaders to their first NCAA appearance in 1996. Although there have been some down years winning basketball is what Valpo has become over the years. Naturally I’m disappointed UMKC was not chosen to be added but I fully understand why. The second oldest conference (Mo Valley) in the nation will be enhanced adding Valpo as a member.
Triple-play
We ain’t talking baseball it’s the NBA Championship under consideration. The Cavs and Warriors are likely headed for a battle of epic proportions; both teams are undefeated in the playoffs as this is written. This would be the third year in a row the Cavs and Warriors could possibly battle for an NBA Championship. In 2015 the Warriors won the championship 4 games to 2, last year it was Cavs 4 games to 3 in winning.
He could afford it……maybe
I believe you might have seen boxer Floyd Mayweather seated court side during a number of NBA games. He is reported to be a fan of the game and is a friend of the Celtics Isaiah Thomas. Mayweather indicates “It might be time for me to buy an NBA team.” We have no idea if the boxer is serious or not however he’s certainly appears to have a starting point. His 2017 net worth is reported to be in the neighborhood of $650 million dollars; NBA teams selling for close to a billion dollars he’d certainly require more funds or several partners in this pursuit of ownership. Is Mayweather really serious might be your next question, in addition he’s going to wait awhile since there are no NBA teams on the market.

Often we as fans are not privy to the struggles of a team unless it becomes public record. That is the case for the ‘08 Championship Celtic team most of us (me included) were never aware there was drama there. In any event a reunion of players was held, not invited was Ray Allen. Until I read a couple of stories I never knew several Celtics had issues with "Jesus Shuttlesworth." I’m reading fan mail saying; “Rondo wouldn’t pass him the ball when he was wide open” among several accounts.
Allen turned down an opportunity to re-sign with the Celtics and chose to join the Heat and that seems to be the problem. The cadre of former Celtics claim Allen never informed them he was leaving. In any event Allen appears to be okay with how all this played out. The reunion was held on KG’s TNT segment Area 21. In attendance were Paul Pierce, Kendrick Perkins, Rajon Rondo, and Big Baby Glen Davis. It should be noted Allen was right behind Pierce in team scoring 21.8 ppg versus 20.3 and ahead of KG at 18.2 ppg.

As mentioned previously the NBA Draft Combine will be held Thursday May 11 and Friday May 12. 67 College players will be analyzed regarding a number of physical issues. Something that can never be measured by a tap measure is a players defensive potential. On second thought it might be their desire to play defense, and example might be Magic Johnson. Magic was never a great defensive stopper however he played excellent team defense. As for measurable qualities they include:
Physical Testing
Height w/o shoes
Height with shoes
Weigh
Wingspan
Athletic Testing
No step vertical jump
Max vertical jump
Bench press
¾ Court sprint
Lane agility (lateral movement, stop-start acceleration, etc.
Above represents the major events of the combine, one question I continue to ponder why in the world are players height measured with and without shoes.

Sometimes they decide to leave and occasionally they are asked to leave, that would be the case with Carlton Bragg former Kansas Jayhawk. Bragg was so busy with off his off the court drama we are not sure it might have affected his play on the court. Records indicate Bragg was suspended twice during the 2016-17 season, perhaps he can resurrect what’s left of his college career at Arizona State.

Magic Johnson says he wants “A superstar for the Lakers.” Much earlier I indicated I wanted no part of Carmelo Anthony more an age issue than anything. Who does Larry Laker see or maybe desire in Purple and Gold? Paul George fits on several levels, L.A. area guy, age a non-factor. The only negative might be the frustration he’s publicly expressed regarding his Pacer teammates. Do the Lakers allow Blake Griffin to switch lockers at Staples Center?
Griffin fits with his age and talent as well, the chief concern his annual injury bug which takes him out of the lineup. Chris Paul could become the point guard the Lakers should have acquired in 2011 (thanks David Stern). Gordon Hayward is not a superstar but is inches from the top, age a real plus in addition he’s talented. A number of free-agents are available who could help the Lakers however I wouldn’t consider them superstar quality.
UCLA in the NBA
I’d forgotten Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook were college teammates. I checked the 2007-08 UCLA roster and also discovered Darren Collison, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute were on the team too. I don’t remember if the latter two were starters but that’s quite interesting, four players off the roster are now in the NBA.

Griffin fits with his age and talent as well, the chief concern his annual injury bug which takes him out of the lineup. Chris Paul could become the point guard the Lakers should have acquired in 2011 (thanks David Stern). Gordon Hayward is not a superstar but is inches from the top, age a real plus in addition he’s talented. A number of free-agents are available who could help the Lakers however I wouldn’t consider them superstar quality.
UCLA in the NBA
I’d forgotten Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook were college teammates. I checked the 2007-08 UCLA roster and also discovered Darren Collison, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute were on the team too. I don’t remember if the latter two were starters but that’s quite interesting, four players off the roster are now in the NBA.

He didn‘t agree with me
I held a brief conversation this morning with a Celtics fan, this is actually part B. of an earlier discussion. I informed him once again of my belief on the draft. I said I believe; “The Celtics will draft Markelle Fultz and move 5-9 Isaiah Thomas to the shooting guard.” He disagreed totally with my take and said; “The Celtic pick will be traded, they will try and keep Paul George from going to the Lakers.” He knows I’m a Laker fan; I didn’t have time to fully discuss this issue with him so I’m finishing it with you. First off the Sixers had diminutive Allen Iverson playing shooting guard, seem to work successfully for them.
The book says Iverson stood 6 six feet tall and checked in at 185 pounds both figures I seriously doubt. Maybe Iverson did but I believe he was 5-10 or 5-11 and was no more than 155 pounds. There is an issue with my friends’ belief. Paul George is not a free-agent; the Celtics would be forced to make a trade to acquire him. George is a restricted free-agent next summer would be a different matter; in addition the Pacers have the right to match any offer. Why take a chance with a Paul George when you’ve got Fultz in the bag if you secure the top pick?

I used the above as a storyline for this account, it was the line uttered by Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.) to Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) in the movie of the same name. Sports agent Maguire was attempting to sign NFL receiver Tidwell. LaVar Bell is actually doing the same thing in a sense if we examine finances of several of the larger apparel companies. He’s not asking anyone to show him the money its right in front of him.
I’m sure Ball could have researched the same information I did. Ending December 31, 2016 Nike sales were $32.4 billion, $19.3 for Adidas followed by Under Armour $4.83. The figures represent the entire product line and not shoes alone. With figures similar to that possible you might discover why Ball might want his on apparel line. The prospect for richness might be the basis for his assertiveness not his foolishness.

On several occasions I’ve written of Seattle’s desire for a “new” Sonics basketball team. One of the sticking points was an arena, the NBA deemed Key Arena inadequate. That wasn’t the only reason the franchise is now in Oklahoma City but certainly one. Fast forward to 2017 and we discover not one, not two not three, sorry I got carried away if you catch that play on words. In truth there are plans on the table from three groups regarding an arena. Anschutz Entertainment Group and Hudson Pacific have joined forming Seattle Partners; the second bid has been put forth by the Oak View Group out of Los Angeles.
The last group SODO is comprised of Chris Hansen who almost purchased the Kings at the time the team was on the market. The Hansen group is comprised of Russell Wilson Seahawks quarterback, Wally Walker former Sonics player and front office executive and two Nordstrom brothers of the department store chain. I’m not going to overload you with information just to say the first two groups plan on renovating Key Arena bringing it up to NBA standards. Hansen’s plan is for a new arena to be built. Basketball from a fans perspective
He’s made the decision
Until Saturday afternoon May 6 we had no idea where Kevin Knox was headed. Mizzou was late to the party but a player in the final decision. Mizzou along with Duke, Kentucky, Florida State and North Carolina. Early Saturday evening came word Knox had reached a decision, the 6-8 wing chose the Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky remains solidly entrenched in first place recruiting regarding Class of 2017 prospects.
I laugh out loud
Almost every time I read or hear a Kristaps Porzingis story I laugh out loud. The youngster has expressed his concerns regarding the direction of the Knicks although he’s indicated a desire to remain in NYC. According to ESPN several NBA teams have reached out to the Knicks in hopes of securing the 7-3 power forward/center in a trade. As for the laughter please note it not aimed at Porzingis its Stephen A. Smith.
Smith claims to be all knowledgeable about basketball and the NBA missed badly on this one. Did I have a clue Porzingis was going to be a star----of course I didn’t. I read a number of scouting reports prior to the 2015 I knew of Porziginia. From Smith’s rant it appeared he read very little on Porzingis or maybe nothing at all. One thing for sure I didn’t make a fool of myself the day after the draft. Feel free to skip portions or be prepared to adjust your volume downward. Oh and don’t forget to laugh at Smith with his brilliant ability to SEE NBA talent.

We have no idea who will be wearing BBB shoes but it will not be UCLA. CBS Sports pointed out UCLA signed a 15-year contract with Under Armour last year. LiAngelo will be a freshman at the school in the fall but will wear the shoes UCLA is contracted to wear. We are unsure what shoes Chino Hills wears but its likely they won’t be the BBB brand. LaMelo is guaranteed to wear something other than his family brand shoe too. So there you have it only one of the three Ball brothers will wear the shoe next season isn’t that an interesting development?

Basketball from a fans perspective
M.I.A.
We are accustom to players missing due to injury. Blake Griffin was missing for the Clippers, now the Spurs Tony Parker. There might be others I overlooked but I wanted to point out this peculiarity. Warriors Coach Steve Kerr with back issues related to surgery will miss the Jazz series. The team appears to be playing capably under Mike Brown; he’s served as head coach for the Cavs and Lakers so he’s not exactly a novice sitting in the first chair.
Spoiled rotten
Admit it you spoil or spoiled your kids, maybe you do it with your grandchildren. We want the best for them, material things we desired as children or youth and couldn’t afford. I don’t mind admitting for me it was a pair of Converse Chuck Taylor’s. The Converse shoe was the only one back in the day Dr. J. wore them, Wilt Chamberlain also sported a pair. I’m restating an earlier take; I have no issue with LaVar Ball’s attempt to become an industrialist. I have difficulty with the manner he’s attempting to accomplish this feat.
Secondly the Lonzo Ball shoe is no Chuck Taylor, its going to retail for $495. The slides which have become popular with youngsters are available with the BBB brand for $220. This is totally crazy how you sell gym shoes at that price; there is nothing behind the shoe or the clothing except the mouth of LaVar Ball. These are not LeBron’s, Curry or Kobe shoes someone might ask “who is Lonzo Ball? “ Maybe this is like the television series Punk’d, Ball has managed to attract our attention will later claim I was just trying to gain a foothold.
Growth
Mizzou fans remember Quin Snyder; he was not the coach now he was then. Snyder was a 30 something at the time he was hired him to replace the legendary Norm Stewart. A brief pause here; Snyder and Bill Self were both being interviewed to coach Mizzou. Snyder an assistant at Duke at the time versus Self head coach at Tulsa, after losing the job to Snyder Self would leave Tulsa for Illinois and later Kansas where he remains to this day. Snyder tasted a degree of success at Mizzou but NCAA infractions and a downturn in the program left him on a ledge.
Snyder resigned in February of 2006 in lieu of termination at the end of the season. Post Mizzou was head coach with a D-League team and several stops as an assistant coach (my Lakers included). In 2014 the Jazz hired him as head coach and the team has improved under his leadership from a below .500 record to the 51-31 this season and a playoff victory over the Clippers. Yes Mizzou fans I was mad at Snyder fro a number of years but have mellowed over time. He’s proven one thing for sure no matter how low you sink there is always the possibility of a return.
Participation
I made several comments regarding our 2nd grade co-ed basketball team. We had a “winning” record although we didn’t maintain scoring. I managed to track the score in my head until I discovered one of the parents was doing the same on the sidelines. We either tied or won the league outright although we received no trophies. We managed to teach the girls and boys how to play the game although they must adjust parts of their game if they continue to play. Officials called no double-dribbles, no traveling and other player errors. I was excited with the season end and certainly look forward to next season.

He said what?
I took exception to the comment Clippers Coach Doc Rivers made on Wednesday. Discussing the upcoming summer and possible changes in the Clippers roster he wanted to explain his position. Rivers said; “I don’t know. I think they deserve a chance to win. They have built this legacy. I do believe that.” Let’s back this vehicle up a moment, nobody “deserves” to win you win by accomplishing the task in front of you it could be basketball or something else.
This is the issue for me the Clippers have been highly successful during the regular season but the playoffs, that’s been quite different. As for the “legacy” portion of Doc’s statement.
Merriam-Webster.com list several variations of the definition, this is the one that stands out. “Something that happened in the past that comes from someone in the past.” I’m not exactly sure if the Clippers have established any type of legacy. Winning 50+ games five years in a row is an accomplishment but certainly nowhere close to a legacy in my view.
“Building blocks”
A Mizzou alum used the term above to describe Cuonzo Martin. A cynic rebuked his comment by stating; “You need more than blocks you need to win on the court.” I cannot disagree with the statement however the mindset in Columbia has changed drastically since Martin’s hire. On Wednesday Kassius Robertson Canisius graduate announced he would become a Tiger.
Robertson scored at a 16.1 ppg clip last season so we know the 6-3 guard can score. The eternal optimist in me sees nothing but positives. Is Mizzou going to compete for the SEC championship next season---I doubt it. Will Mizzou be improved over last season; I believe that to be the case. All signs point to success on the basketball court next season and hopefully into the future.

I wrote 98% of this account before the release of the Lonzo Ball shoe. As many might be aware Lonzo Ball now has his own shoe manufactured by his family brand BBB. That’s just the latest development in the story of LaVar Ball and his effort to move into the circle of big time players. After being informed there was little interest in the BBB brand LaVar Ball has decided in favor of taking his marketing plan elsewhere. Reports are he’s exploring a Chinese company or some of the smaller American companies to work a deal. The same scenario applies Ball wants to launch his own shoe and apparel line (which he might have done) however any smaller companies might be less inclined to pay big bucks than Nike, Adidas and Reebok.
I have no issues with LaVar Ball attempting to sell his brand the issue is the manner he is conducting business. In addition there is the price point; Ball indicates he wants to price his shoe at $200. (It’s now reported the Lonzo Ball will retail at $495) the Nike LeBron retails for $220, LeBron sales on name alone can Ball expect the same for his shoe? In addition I don’t believe there is a corporation anywhere which allows you to dictate terms to them on an unproven commodity. Yes I said unproven, as stated previously we believe Lonzo can play in the NBA however that’s yet to be proven. We toss in an unproven college freshmen and a high school junior to the mix and you say you demanding $1 billion dollars.

Although fairly new there is professional basketball in Canada. The National Basketball League of Canada or NBLC just completed its sixth season of operation. There are a total of 10 teams 5 in the Atlantic Division and 5 in the Central Division. We have the Halifax Hurricanes and the Windsor Express just to name teams from the divisions. In the same manner the NBA has several Canadian players the NBLC has American players. The league season consists of 40 games and the season runs from December to April 30th.

Basketball from a fans perspective
No matter the height
I listened this morning to an interview regarding Isaiah Thomas of the Celtics and his impact on the game. Almost instinctively the host mentioned his height and the respondent said; “He’s always been 5-9, he had to prove he could play. “ How true, this game which began in a Springfield (MA) YMCA placed no emphasis on height. Basket ball was intended to recreate students between football and baseball season. Over the years since its’ 19th Century invention a players height has become more and more crucial with a basket but 10 feet above the court.
There is no exact year and date but somewhere in the mid to late 1940’s we began to see taller players add their skill to the game. Better training, better nutrition and better coaching might have all been contributing factors. In any event players’ smaller in stature who once dominated the game had to prove they could play with the “Big Boys.” 5-9 Calvin Murphy could score with the best of them. In addition the NBA witnessed 5-3 Muggsy Bogues and 5-5 Earl Boykins at the point as well. 5-7 Spud Webb won the Slam Dunk Contest in 1986, 5-9 Nate Robinson played for a number of NBA teams most recently the Pelicans in 2015. These and others traveled a different road, the old saying still applies; “A little man must prove he can play a big man must prove he can’t”.

Bits n Pieces
The Duke Blue Devils picked up a commitment from Jordan Goldwire; you say who is Jordan Goldwire? Never mind if Goldwire’s name is relatively unknown most of us were unfamiliar with his name too. He’s a Class of 2017 prospect but not highly recruited in fact Rivals awards him no stars; he was reported to be headed to Eastern Kentucky. With questions regarding their back court Duke reached out to the 6-2 guard is from Norcross (GA).
I’d like to see a round-robin pre-season tournament featuring all the Missouri I Division teams. The tournament site could be rotated every year between Mizzou, Missouri State, St. Louis University, Southeast Missouri State and UMKC. I’m not sure if this will ever occur due to tradition. It was said at one time Mizzou didn’t wish to schedule StLou or Missouri State----why former Coach Norm Stewart refused to play these schools is really clouded in mystery.

No matter the height
I listened this morning to an interview regarding Isaiah Thomas of the Celtics and his impact on the game. Almost instinctively the host mentioned his height and the respondent said; “He’s always been 5-9, he had to prove he could play. “ How true, this game which began in a Springfield (MA) YMCA placed no emphasis on height. Basket ball was intended to recreate students between football and baseball season. Over the years since its’ 19th Century invention a players height has become more and more crucial with a basket but 10 feet above the court.
There is no exact year and date but somewhere in the mid to late 1940’s we began to see taller players add their skill to the game. Better training, better nutrition and better coaching might have all been contributing factors. In any event players’ smaller in stature who once dominated the game had to prove they could play with the “Big Boys.” 5-9 Calvin Murphy could score with the best of them. In addition the NBA witnessed 5-3 Muggsy Bogues and 5-5 Earl Boykins at the point as well. 5-7 Spud Webb won the Slam Dunk Contest in 1986, 5-9 Nate Robinson played for a number of NBA teams most recently the Pelicans in 2015. These and others traveled a different road, the old saying still applies; “A little man must prove he can play a big man must prove he can’t”.

I’d like to see a round-robin pre-season tournament featuring all the Missouri I Division teams. The tournament site could be rotated every year between Mizzou, Missouri State, St. Louis University, Southeast Missouri State and UMKC. I’m not sure if this will ever occur due to tradition. Basketball from a fans perspective
“Doing the same thing over and over and over again, but expecting different results”
The quote is attributed to the legendary scientist Albert Einstein. Its likely Einstein never bounced a basketball in his life however his statement certainly rings true for the Clippers. Free agency should prove interesting, do the Clippers maintain the team as is or do they begin dismantling. Based on their playoff outcome what should we expect over the course of the summer?
The other team in Los Angeles has misled us for a number of years; they do this by winning 50+ games during the regular season. Once the playoffs begin it becomes a totally different matter. The Clippers play as if they are Supermen weakened by Kryptonite laden apparel worn by their NBA opponents. It’s not the same playoff team every year, in the last six years they have lost to the Spurs, Grizzlies, Thunder, Rockets and Blazers on Sunday it was the Jazz. I’m going to point what I believe are part of the problem this team fails to advance to the championship round.
Doc Rivers-Sorry folks injuries aside a team with this much talent should at least play for a championship. Coaching has got to be at the top, this team wins
50-60 regular season games every year but never advances to play for a championship. Rivers knows basketball but apparently cannot communicate this to his team.
Doc Rivers-He impacts the Clippers twice since he also serves as president. In his front-office role Doc is responsible for acquiring talent. High draft choices fail to provide a great deal of help. Have they drafted ANY player who in a reserve role has aided them?
Blake Griffin-We have witnessed to his level of play improving over the years. Two issues stand out he’s injury prone and his maturity. To miss time due to injury is understandable to be M.I.A. because of a restaurant fight---well.
_______-There is no name because there have been many in the revolving door at small forward. Over the years a number of players have played the four and none has stood out.
Clipper bench-Speaks for itself not much to say, if you are forced to play Paul Pierce major minutes what does that say about your bench?

I heard Rivers the other day say; “You guys (media) have been writing our obituary for several months.” Maybe it was clear why that might be the direction of their writing.

It could have occurred in any major sports however our discussion is basketball. Were you a child, maybe you were an adult when your team(s) traded your favorite player. It could have been free-agency too, you thought he was loyal to the team but he left for money or the opportunity for a championship. One that stands out for me was Norm Nixon, I know I‘m dating myself. The Lakers had gone through a down period and the team needed a re-boot. Nixon a speedy point guard was drafted in 1977 and he aided in revitalizing the Lakers.
Two years later 1979 to be exact the team drafted Magic Johnson, two point guards in the same back court. Two point guards having to share the basketball somebody had to go. That somebody turned out to be Nixon, prior to the 1983 season Jerry West traded him to the Clippers for the draft rights to Byron Scott. The balance of the story is Laker history. Scott a shooting guard complimented Johnson much better than Nixon. I love me some Norm Nixon and continued to follow his career until he retired. What’s your story, which trade or free-agency caused you heartbreak?

I’m going to pose the question based on one source DraftExpress.com. The April 26 update has the Suns choosing Lonzo Ball; at this point the lottery is yet to be decided and will change over the next several weeks. I’m unconcerned with daddy Ball what do the Lakers do if Ball is gone? They have Josh Jackson, Jason Tatum and then De’Arron Fox, the first two are small forwards with Fox being a point guard. This is not a talent issue rather a position issue, the Lakers have Brandon Ingram entrenched at small forward.
Does it make sense to draft a highly talented player for a position already occupied. As for point guard I believe Fox more of a combo guard than a pure point and that‘s not a slam at him. The Lakers need a point guard whether it‘s Ball, Fultz or someone not identified. However if that is not the case I also believe a team can never have too much height so these are my choices. If available my choice becomes Arizona’s 7 foot Lauri Marrkkanen or Jonathan Isaac 6-11 from Florida State.

Originally I stated I would just ignore them but that won’t work in the long run for me, must I name them? Okay since you twisted my arm they are; Stephen A. Smith, Jason Whitlock, Colin Cowherd and Dan Le Batard. I have no interest in listening to them blabber on and on so the plan is like medicine, small doses. I worked access television at one point; I imagine the studio guys must be constantly adjusting Stephen A. Smith’s mike as he goes of one of his screaming rants.

Basketball from a fans perspective
Talent
Either you have talent or you don’t, Gordon Hayward has talent Hayward can ball as they say. Why has he been “invisible” in the NBA you ask? He played his college ball at Butler which has a national rep but hardly on the level of a North Carolina, Duke or several others. Once Hayward was drafted it was the Jazz and Salt Lake City, the Jazz have few national television appearances.
Unless you live in the metro Salt Lake area you failed to see the accession of Hayward. Since arriving in the NBA in 2010 Hayward’s stock has been trending upward for a number of years. The 6-8 forward became an NBA All-Star in 2017 and is the leader of this young Jazz team. It was Hayward who led the way for the Jazz as they eliminated the Clippers in the playoffs.
Pension while playing
Vince Carter might be the first player to accomplish this qualify for his pension while still an active player. Just kidding folks, a player must be fully retired before they can qualify for a pension. To borrow the nickname Kenny Smith gave him “The Half Man Half Amazing” Carter will turn 41 years of age in January 2018. The upcoming 2017-18 season is significant in the fact it will be Carter’s 20th year in the association.

I had a well-intention friend say; “Now that basketball is over why you don’t write on football or baseball?” I said; “Why, this is not intended to focus on anything but basketball. Did I say basketball, I thought I might state it again this is a basketball publication. As the calendar turns to May the world of basketball does slow. The NBA is the only professional basketball being played however there will be AAU and NBA Summer League to cover. I shall see how this plays out, if the news slows considerably Words will revert to a Monday, Wednesday, Friday publication.
The real reason
I believe the word is out why the Valley passed on University of Missouri Kansas City. The positives I saw they said; “look over there.” I saw an up and coming Division I program in an urban setting. This would be lacking now that Wichita State was leaving. Springfield (MO) is a large populace city (Missouri State) but in my opinion not very urban. Although urban Chicago qualifies and is already a member Loyola University appears to be pretty much ignored by basketball fans. According to the Springfield Ledger UMKC suffers the same fate a failure to draw fans.

You’ve heard the term “Helicopter Parent” haven’t you? That parent hovering above their children that fits LaVar Ball. LaVar Ball will not shut up long enough for the media (and me) to leave him alone. I had read late in the season Ball had issues with the Chino Hills basketball coach. It appears losing the state championship might have been the final straw for Ball. Stephan Gilling leading Chino Hills to a 30-3 was fired.
Imagine a basketball coach with a 30-3 record fired due to a parent’s complaint and interference. LaVar Ball doesn’t have that much power however I believe someone in authority must have grown tired of Ball’s moaning and complaining about Gilling. It’s a shame they found it easier to fire the coach than the parent. Despite this teams outstanding record they begin a search for the third coach in three years. Wonder why so many coaches and a winning program? Ball contacted claims he had nothing to do with the school firing Gilling.

I have a real good idea why the Clippers lost, Stephen A. Smith picked them to win the series. Work prevented me from viewing the game so I am unable to offer any insight. All I know is the Jazz won Game 7 over the Clippers 104-91. Think about that a moment, Game 7 in the playoffs and the game is in your gym and you LOSE. There is something wrong here, the Clippers might be the best regular season team in the NBA.
It serves no purpose to win 50+ games every year and then lose in the playoffs. I believe it’s likely we have seen the last of Lob City. What does the future hold, do they resign pending free agents Paul, Griffin and Redick? On paper this team is very talented but they cannot get over the hump.. The 2016-17 season is a different matter, they should have won with or without Blake Griffin. As for Coach Doc Rivers and son Austin, well that’s a story for another column.

9-14, it will be held in the Quest Center in Chicago. Players will be measured and timed in several areas such as;

A number of players expected to be high lottery picks are reported to be skipping the combine. There is a change with this years combine, a player who fails to hire an agent can return to college if they desire.

A team in the Chinese Basketball Association offered the 6-8 Knox a $1.4 million dollar one-year contract. We must guess they assumed he’d be headed to the NBA anyway. The unusual part of the story Knox is highly likely to be a one-and-done athlete regardless which college team he choices. Bottom line it becomes a year being paid versus a year eating in the school cafeteria-------interesting.
Paul Weir left New Mexico State to take over the University of New Mexico program. I thought that was a little unusual until I realized Cuonzo Martin’s journey. Martin served as head coach at Missouri State from 2008-2011 in Springfield. The city is located about 170 miles south southwest of Columbia home to Mizzou. I’m curious, I wonder if Mizzou will ever host Missouri State in a pre-season game.
One brother stands nearly seven feet tall; the other is close to 6-3 on his tip toes. Both brothers took up the game of basketball at an early age. The older brother due to his height was deemed to become the more accomplished player. The younger brother grew in stature too but never reached the height of his brother. Which player had the greatest success on the court? If you guessed the taller older brother your guess is incorrect, the younger brother who stands 6-1 would become the better player. We can’t and should not attempt to determine the heart or desire for the game.
Guard Charlie Moore left Cal after Cuonzo Martin departed for Mizzou. The coach indicated Moore was not going to be recruited, nothing to do with his talent rather numbers. Mizzou has returning guards on the roster plus three incoming this fall. Cal’s loss (and maybe Mizzou) Moore decided in favor of Kansas, he will be closer to Chicago where his ailing father lives. He will sit out next season unless granted a waiver. The Jayhawks appear to have struck gold with this move.
