Name your group, i.e., your favorite NBA players. No explanation is necessary other than that particular player. I had to think about mine, first of all the names are not placed in any specific order. I have no intention to defend my list because it belongs to me. I should further explain, if these guys are on television or I have a rare opportunity to see them live (Doncic) you’d better bet I will attempt just that. It’s quite possible my favorites list is going to differ wildly from yours, with that here goes:

I realize there are 6 names on my list but I thought it was too difficult to exclude one of the names, I adapted by creating a 5a and 5b.

Once upon a time

That’s how most fairy tales begin however this is a tale of a different type, at one time DePaul basketball was a model of on-court success. This Chicago school tasted victory quite often over the years particularly under the late Ray Meyer, you’ve heard of the legendary George Mikan, his coach was Meyer. DePaul sent a number of players to the NBA maybe the last great one was Mark Aguirre (1978-1981). Aguirre and Mikan would be enshrined in the College Basketball Hall of Fame with Mikan’s addition in the Naismith Hall of Fame. After Meyer retired his son Joey took over operating the program and it worked for a time.

In 2018-19 DePaul won 19 games the last time the school finished above .500, we must return to the 2006-07 season to see a DePaul team win more than 20 games. The school’s changed conferences, changed coaches yet continues to underperform. The question, has it become that difficult to recruit quality players? This once great basketball program has fallen on such hard times on the court few under the age of 30 know the history that once existed especially under Ray Meyer. At the time, the University of MO-Kansas City began playing Division I basketball I envisioned a “DePaul” type program, competitive basketball in an urban setting. Unfortunately UMKC never reach the levels I envisioned and DePaul has been unable to return to it’s glory days.

A decision has been reached

Derik Queen is awarded 5 stars by Rivals and 247Sports, both sites regard Queen as the number 15 prospect in the nation. The 6-foot 10 245-pound Queen is enrolled at Montverde Academy in Montverde Florida although his home is Baltimore Maryland. Among the teams offering scholarships were Houston, Kansas, LSU, Indiana and Maryland. As recently as last week a Kansas fan website believed they were a favorite for Queen however that is not the case. On Wednesday Queen made his announcement known by giving a verbal commitment to attend the University of Maryland. 

I came across his name

He’s headed to a college in the U.S. or maybe the G-League its claimed, his name is likely unfamiliar to most it was to me. His name is Khaman Maluach and he’s from South Africa. Maluach’s been attending the NBA Academy located in Saley Senegal a nation located in West Africa. He’s 7 foot 2 inches and 250 pounds but the balance of his stats leap out at us. Maluach has a 7 feet 4.5-inch wingspan, his hand span is 9.5 inches which says to me he can provide quite a defensive presence if nothing else.

Maluach has offers from Duke, Kansas, Kentucky and UCLA to name a few. I have no idea if he can play however all the schools listed must believe that to be the case otherwise why the scholarship offers? In my mind’s eye I can see Jon Scheyer thrilled about having Cooper Flagg and Maluach on the floor for his Blue Devils. Another name I will attempt to follow for a decision as to where he’s headed even if it’s the G-League.

That can’t be right…can it?

David Thompson is 69-years old now, the spring in his leaping ability departed long ago. Although he measured 6 foot 4 inches in height Thompson was reported to have a 44-inch vertical when he played at North Carolina State. Thompson was made the number one pick by the ABA Nuggets and NBA Hawks but chose to sign with the Nuggets. This “marriage” was made unique in that he was one of just a few players who was not forced to change teams when the ABA-NBA merger occurred.

You’ve heard the story about great leapers and their ability to touch the top of the backboard, Thompson could accomplish the feat. In any event that’s what we’ve been led to believe. His career only lasted 9 years, injuries and drug issues might have been the biggest factor in curtailing his career. In any event Thompson sought treatment and returned a changed man. He retired at the end of the 1984 season, he’d played the last two seasons for the Sonics. This is but a thumbnail sketch of one of the all-time great basketball players…you say how great? Thompson’s been enshrined in the Naismith and College Basketball Hall of Fame.

G-League Team Elite

I wanted to briefly revisit the commissioners discussion involving the Team Elite. My research indicates several players playing for Team Elite can earn up to $1 million dollars annually. That’s certainly a significant amount of money however the advent of NIL has placed them in second place. “There are at least three college basketball players earning above that amount with Bronny James earning $5.9 million. On the surface it would appear Team Elite is not going out of business however it no longer becomes the draw it was intended when originally begun. Fact, all basketball players in college are nowhere close to earning million-dollar salary’s however you can see the dilemma it presents for the NBA. 

“Did I do that?”

An American television comedy program titled Family Matters began in 1989 and ran for 9 seasons. A minor character named Steve Urkel (Jaleel White) came to the forefront and was actually to become the star of the program. Urkel was a first-class nerd, whenever he did something that caused a catastrophe the first words out of his mouth were, “Did I do that?” I feel like Urkel after I was singing the praises of UConn recently and the fact they were the number one college basketball teams in all polls.

This rise in the polls occurred on Monday and they were number one on Tuesday. Tuesday evening saw the Huskies were matched against the Creighton Bluejays 85-66. I wasn’t able to view the game but the after comment I found entertaining and wanted to share it with you. Coach Dan Hurley said, “Coaches did a bad job coaching, and players did a bad job of playing.” Despite the loss to Creighton I continue to maintain UConn will likely be there at the first Monday in April. Of course that’s barring an upset someplace in the NCAA Tourney.

Trae shoots from distance…splash

Will that be the announcement from Laker television broadcaster Bill McDonald next winter? You are probably saying to yourself, “Doesn’t Trae Young play for the Hawks?” Yes, that would be the case for Young as this is written in February 2024. Are the Lakers looking past the time LeBron James will be leading them, that well could be the case? A story has been circulating that the Lakers will make a trade to acquire Young.

Who do the Lakers trade to acquire the All-Star caliber point guard? D’Angelo Russell’s got to be at the top of the trade list although I would be reluctant to include him in any trade however that’s my observation, not management. Other than Russell the Lakers have a significant amount of talent to include in a trade. On the other end would the Anthony Davis-Trae Young combo be lethal to opposing teams? Young is a streaky shooter, my description of him…volume shooter. Despite Young’s shooting I’d have to admit he’s a superior assist man over Russell.

Nicknames

It seems as though nicknames have generally fallen out of favor in recent years. Based on that fact we must return to the past to cover most of them. We could begin with Julius Dr. J. Erving, he was supposed to have been given that name do to the manner he operated on the court. Another name from the past was the late Marvin Bad News Barnes, he was in a sense unwelcome news when he arrived on the court. Wilt Chamberlain had a couple of nicknames, The Big Dipper and Wilt the Stilt are the two most common. Shaquille O’ Neal went outside of basketball naming himself The Big Aristotle. Paul Pierce was nicknamed The Truth one I never figured out.

Another nickname confusing for me, Kevin Garnett certainly was large but how did he become The Big Ticket? Allen Iverson simply became The Answer or for some it was AI. A nickname for Giannis Antetokounmpo I never liked is The Greek Freak indicating he’s some kind of creature. We have Charles Barkley, The Round Mound of Rebound or Sir Charles. Anthony Davis is more commonly known as AD or The Brow. Kevin Durant has several nicknames but is generally referred to as KD, next up is Isiah Thomas of the Pistons, he was given the nickname Zeke. This story is closed out with another name from the past George Iceman Gervin, how he was tagged with the name is an unknown. Those are just a few of the names I uncovered in my research…there are many, many more.

What to expect

I mentioned recently I had become part of an American Basketball Association social media group. My hope was to pick up bits of information regarding the ABA unknown to me. Since I am not personally acquainted with any of the group’s members I have no idea of the age range. I have gained insight into the league that made the NBA take notice of them. As you were aware the recent NBA All Star Game was held in Indianapolis, of course the city was an original member of the ABA. I must explain that part to inform you of the next portion and my view.

At least two group members expressed disappointment that the ABA was not mentioned once. Think about that for a moment, the NBA consumed the ABA, they took in the players but not the records. Why would the NBA desire to entertain a discussion on a league that no longer exist? There was a discussion I found very entertaining. Three Hall of Fame players Larry Bird, Reggie Miller and Isiah Thomas discuss Indiana basketball. Bird of course played his high school basketball at French Lick and Indiana State, Miller spent his NBA career with the Pacers and Thomas begin his NBA career at the University of Indiana.

This is troubling

Ohio State upset Purdue over the weekend 73-69 but that wasn’t my focus, my attention was on Purdue’s Zach Edey all 7 foot 4 and 300 pounds of him. His game was decent, 22 points 13 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. I’ve mentioned over and over despite his Player of the Year accolades last season the NBA has taken a hum hold view of his NBA potential. I didn’t see the game only a photo taken at a point, Ohio State’s Evan Mahaffey is shown blocking an Edey shot at the basket. Players have shots blocked all the time except in this instance I checked Mahaffey’s bio and this is troubling.

Mahaffey stands 6 foot 6 inches in height but is, reported to have a 6-foot 11-inch wingspan. Because I didn’t see the game nor the block I must guess the series of events. Opposing Edey for most of the game must have been Flex Okpara 6-foot 11-inch center, according to the box Okpara was limited offensively. As for Mahaffey did Edey make the same mistake a number of Big Men tend to do at times. Raising the ball from waist level to take the shot, sometimes especially a guy with long arms you are providing them an opportunity to block you. Personally I’d like to see Edey in the NBA however having his shot blocked by a player of Mahaffey’s stature is a little concerning.

Where in the world are we?

That’s an interesting question based on the worldwide growth of basketball. We could be in Canada and not following the NBA Raptors. We could be attending a game between the Windsor Express and the London Lightning two teams in the National Basketball League of Canada. On the other hand we might find ourselves in Montreal watching the Alliance and Calgary Surge teams who play in the Canadian Elite Basketball League which began play in 2019.

On the other hand we could journey across the Atlantic Ocean to the UK, there in action we might see the Bristol Flyers and their opposition in the London Lions. Heading onto the European continent we'd find a number of teams from several nations all part of Euroleague basketball, Wemby's former team Metropolitans 94 is a member. Despite turmoil in the Middle East we find teams in the Israeli Basketball Premier League competing against one another. Our flight stops next in Australia and we take in action from the National Basketball League or NBL, several players began honing their skill in the NBL prior to heading for a U.S. college or the NBA.  

Flying in a northerly direction we land in South Korea and take in a game from the Korean Basketball League, this between two teams representing the capital city. The Seoul Samsung Thunders are facing the Seoul SK Knights, not that unusual, the NBA has the Lakers and Clippers in Los Angeles and the Knicks and Nets in New York City. This is but a small number of professional basketball leagues around the world, their numbers far exceed the total of football and baseball teams around the world. The game at least the NBA version might not be growing however worldwide is a different story.   

This is interesting 

Until 1947 major league baseball was segregated, black players were not permitted to play. Jackie Robinson would go on to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers that year, he began play in Negro Leagues baseball. This was the “major leagues” for black baseball players until Robinson broke the color barrier. By now you are wondering where I’m headed, how about Dr. J., Julius Erving? On are about 2020 this occurred, MLB baseball recognized “Seven Negro Leagues as major leagues and adopted the statistics of more than 3,400 players in those leagues from 1920 to 1948 into the official record.”

Exactly how these records are listed in Cooperstown is unknown however they are no longer excluded as they had once been. Back to Dr. J. who started this research project, if we looked up the point totals for Dr. J. NBA.com indicate he scored 18,364 points in his 11-year NBA career but he actually totaled more points than that. According to figures I was able to discover Dr. J. scored a total of 30,026 points if his ABA numbers are included in the point total. I used the doctor as the example however there are other former athletes who played in the ABA and NBA. The NBA needs to do the same as Major League baseball include ALL the records.

Who placed him in charge?

If you go to ESPN’s NBA page you will note Stephen A. Smith’s face all over it. There are several subjects and players he provides us his view. My question, who appointed him in charge of EVERYTHING? The latest example is the dunk contest held at NBA All Star Weekend. The competition has become a ho-hum event and needs a boost, according to Smith we are aware of the why. Mr. Smith has determined the problem with the dunk contest can be laid at the feet of LeBron James.

Smith claims because LeBron refuses to compete it’s gone downhill. There is no argument at 55 years of age (just kidding) he remains the face of the NBA but why is the problem LeBron’s alone? There are other high profile players who are non-participants in the dunk contest. There is no requirement for me to go over the rosters of NBA teams and begin naming names. The point I’m attempting to make the fact the dunk contest is so lack luster is more than LeBron James alone, its bunches of other players who refuse to participate. Maybe somebody should take time and explain that to Smith.

I said it

My Kansas friends didn’t appreciate my social media post on Sunday. I asked the question because I didn’t see the game, how did Kansas beat UConn. The Huskies appear to be the best team in the nation based on their 24-win record and occupying the top spot in the AP and Coaches poll. A brief look back informs us the Jayhawks won 69-65 in the game played at Allen Fieldhouse December 1. A home game must have certainly assisted in the win for the Jayhawks.

Was there anything else that stands out looking back two months ago? The Jayhawks shot a sizzling 50% from the floor and a solar 64.3% from the 3-point line. The Huskies only shot 41% from the floor but a fair 39% from three, in addition they were only 50% from the free throw line. As for the other areas the box score indicates they were pretty much even. In any event the win looks outstanding on the resume for Kansas, they along with Seton Hall are the only schools to date able to claim victory over coach Dan Hurley's Huskies.

A coaching change

You know the old story don’t you, “A coach gets too much credit when the team wins and too much blame when they lose.” That is the case for Jacque Vaughn, as the Tuesday edition was being completed came a major announcement. The Brooklyn Nets make it known head coach Vaughn had been fired, at the time of his firing the team had a 21-33 record. While this is not news of a shocking nature it still makes for a question regarding Nets management. Since the team moved to Brooklyn there have been 6 men not counting interim coaches sitting in the first chair since 2012.

I have no idea if the same management is in place however consider this one fact. Nets management hired two head coaches (Jason Kidd, Steve Nash) with no prior coaching experience. At this point it is my guess the Nets will have an interim take over for what remains of the season. Perhaps management might have a name under consideration as this is written, a hire is unlikely before the middle portion of April would be my thought. Kevin Ollie former NBA player and current Nets assistant coach has been promoted to the first chair with interim coach placed in front of his name. We shall see if this change moves the Nets into a more favorable realm.

A fix was not there

The East won 211 to the 186 scored by the West squad, that is no typo. There were 200 points scored by the winning team and a fix I expected was not there. Some might remember last season I expressed a belief how terrible the NBA All Star game was last season. It had nothing to do with the score it was the manner the teams had been assembled. We had players from Milwaukee teamed with players from Los Angeles i.e., east and west guys on the same team.

Too much for me I boycotted the game pining for a return to the original format. I hoped change was in the air and it was, the league announced it would return to the East-West format. I sat down in front of my television Sunday evening and what I saw was indescribable. NBA All Star games have never seen outstanding defensive efforts this one had ZERO. I watched through the first quarter then changed channels. I’d hope the action would be improved however it wasn’t, I watched through the 3rd quarter and could take no more. I’m going to say it, some of you will be displeased with my statement. It’s my belief the 3-point shot indiscriminately used is going to kill basketball at all levels. I happen to believe the shot, like anything else in life, should be fulfilled in moderation.

The All-Star game saw its use at the very worst level in my opinion. As with most of you I took so many courses during my educational process I don’t remember who said it. The quote goes something like this, “Everything cycles, clothing, shoes, vocabulary and a number of other things might go out of style but eventually return in some form.” I have been ready for quite a while low-post basketball to return and not so much darn emphasis on shooting from distance.

A name to follow

On Sunday, the South Florida Bulls beat the number 24 Florida Owls 90-86. The win for the Bulls became number 20 for the season and they are likely to earn an NCAA invite. This discussion centers on the coach of the Bulls, Amir Abdur-Rahim. After a time spent playing at Garden City Community College and Southeastern Louisiana he moved into the coaching ranks. His first job in 2006 was an assistant at Murray State, from there it was three more stops as an assistant before being hired as head coach at Kennesaw State in Kennesaw Georgia.

Abdur-Rahim’s slow start as a head coach was certainly underwhelming to say the least, he began with a 1 win 28 game loss record. By the time he left for South Florida he compiled a 26-9 record this past season. I am unfamiliar with who might have been in place when he took over the program but winning 20 games at this point in the season certainly says outstanding to me. At 42-years of age this is not likely his last stop, if he continues his winning ways I could see another Division I program reaching out to Abdur-Rahim. By the way if the last name sounds familiar it should to some. He is the brother of Shareef who played in the NBA and is the current president of the NBA G-League.

“It’s up to him”

Those are the words of LeBron James answering the question. He was interviewed and the subject centered somewhat on Bronny and whether he leaves USC for the NBA. LeBron indicates the decision belongs to his son, naturally I would guess input from the parents would impact Bronny’s choice too. I am sure Bronny’s health has made for a different conclusion versus this time last season. 

As he was preparing for college it’s likely the belief most believed he’d be a one and done athlete. Health matters drastically affected the plan, and this is what I saw. Once the medical staff approved him for play a decision was made by the medical and coaching staff, Bronny would take on a reserve role. Despite playing limited minutes through his freshman year he’s been unable to do anything that provides proof he is ready for the NBA. For me this is more than simply playing a reserve role it’s the shooting. The 5.6 points a game as a reserve is not critical for me, the 36.5% from the floor and 27.5% from three is bothersome. His assist and rebound numbers in a reserve role are good. Okay Larry Laker you are providing a wealth of negatives exactly what’s your position?

I am NOT proclaiming Bronny's not an NBA prospect I just believe he’s not ready currently. I realize Bronny (and LeBron) want to combine their talent on a team however I believe both will be better served in the 2026-27 NBA season. As conditioned as LeBron James is I could see him play limited minutes despite his age being a factor. This is my view alone, a final decision is yet to be made by the James family we must wait for a May 2024 answer.

Wow

Will NBA G-League Team Elite be shut down, that’s not a statement however it could be at some point in the near future. Commissioner Silver pointed to a fact I believe most of us hadn’t considered. Silver pointed out there are college athletes Bronny James and Shedeur Sanders to name just two whose incomes far exceeds those playing for Team Elite. The same story might prevail for rival OTE also providing salaries to its participants. No decision has been reached at this time but the future for G-League Team Elite and OTE might be in serious jeopardy.

By now you are aware I take the State of Missouri motto seriously. In case you are unfamiliar it says, “I’m from Missouri you’ve got to Show Me.” That’s it, don’t tell me Show Me by what you are able to accomplish and that’s the point for me. I’m uncomfortable with Laker coach Darvin Ham, I’m not calling for him to be fired but confused by his statements. This is an example, after signing Spencer Dinwiddie the coach said, “Maybe I’ll use a three-guard lineup in some instances.” He would be utilizing Austin Reaves, D’Lo and the newly acquired Dinwiddie in this projected lineup. My first thought is a team’s lineup, you are giving up height. On the other hand this is not intended to be a permanent move only if the game allows it.

I came across an interesting story one unfamiliar to me and probably you as well. There is a shoe, PF Flyers, which apparently has been on the market since the early days of basketball. The shoe looks remarkably similar to the Converse Chuck Taylor’s. According to my research the PF stands for Performance Fit and this shoe first arrived on the market in 1937. Originally a product of the B.F. Goodrich Tire Company the shoes are now manufactured by Kassia Designs. This might be a first, it was not Dr. J., Magic or Bird with the first basketball shoe endorsement. The honor goes to former Celtic Bob Cousy, his signature shoe was first made available in 1953.

This is a little different basketball story you might have heard previously. PJ Tucker wants to leave the Clippers but he refuses a buyout. You might remember Tucker was acquired in a trade October 31, he’s indicated he didn’t ask for the trade to the Clippers and he desires to play for another team. Based on his very public stance the Clippers fined Tucker a record $75,000. Tucker is now 38 years of age and his stance is interesting…what do you think?

It was the money

4-5 years after its founding (1967) the decision to sign with an NBA or ABA team might be clear, in the first year of operation no one has any idea what will occur for this startup league. Based on the future being unknown money became the decider in that initial ABA season? For the late Mel Daniels the decision was simple, it was the money…the explanation now follows. After playing for the University of New Mexico Daniels says the higher number was the decider. Drafted by the NBA Cincinnati Royals (Kings) “They offered $15,000 as a bonus and $17,500 salary. On the other hand the Minnesota Muskies of the ABA offered $15,000 bonus and a $30,000 salary. So somehow the higher number won out.”

Daniels was named ABA Rookie of the Year with 22 points and 15.6 rebounds a game and then a strange thing occurred…a trade. It’s been mentioned on several occasions that a substantial number of ABA teams were hemorrhaging money, the Muskies were one of those teams. Daniels along with others was traded to the Indiana Pacers where he would spend the major portion of his basketball career. After retirement Daniels remained in the game as an assistant coach, he helped develop a guy by the name of Larry Bird while he was an assistant at Indiana State. Daniels was honored and enshrined in the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2012. He died in 2015 complications from heart surgery, he was 71. Daniels bio indicates he was a poet, he wrote more than 20,000 poems in his lifetime. Mel Daniels is a name you should be familiar with from basketball’s rich past.

Is it okay?

This is a basketball blog but occasionally something is said or accomplished in another area. That is the case here, by now you are quite aware I love quotes. In addition I believe it’s okay to use an Andy Reid quote especially since he is now a 3X Super Bowl winning coach. He said this recently, “When things look grim, be the grim reaper.” I believe that might go along with the quote from Rudy Tomjanovich at the time he coached the NBA Rockets defending their championship. “Never underestimate the heart of a champion.” I believe that might apply to the NFL Chiefs and NBA Nuggets, to be the best you’ve got to beat the best. Did I just make that up or did someone else say it first? Oh well, it is out there now for all-time sake.

Some of you might remember Scot Pollard, he experienced an 11-year NBA career for a number of NBA teams. Pollard played his college basketball at Kansas and was drafted by the Pistons in the June 1998. A news story broke last week indicating Pollard was in desperate need of a heart transplant. For a person 6 foot 11 and 278 pounds the story indicated how difficult the task might be locating a heart. I’m pleased to report a donor heart has been found and Pollard will soon undergo the transplant, so that is certainly great news.

Bronny James in the NBA, we continue to read and hear his name mentioned. I am taking the opposite view…is he ready? I fully understand the health concerns and Southern Cal’s Andy Enfield playing Bronny in a reserve role. The portion I question is his ability on the court, his coach indicates he’s pleased with Bronny’s role less the shooting portion. Enfield should certainly be better acquainted with his player than me however I remain confused about his ability. Bronny is now 6 foot 4 and 210 pounds, I’m sure maturity plus workouts have increased his physique significantly. But the question still remains for me, is he NBA ready?

This is interesting because two individuals writing for SI.com but have differing views on Laker activity over the trade deadline. This from Rohan Nadkarni, “Knicks win NBA Trade Deadline while Lakers and Knicks Falter.” Chris Mannix had a different view, “Lakers inactivity at NBA Trade Deadline was the Right Move.” As you can see these two scribes have differing views on what my Lakers accomplished or fail to accomplish.

A sad passing

On Saturday morning came the sad news of the passing of Lefty Driesell, the Hall of Fame former coach who was 92 years old. Driesell was a coach for 41 years, imagine a career that lengthy. It was Davidson, Maryland, James Madison and Georgia State where he amassed nearly 800 wins against 394 losses. A number of college teams hold Midnight Madness at the beginning of the college basketball season. It’s Lefty Driesell who originated the craze while head coach at Maryland. NCAA rules have changed from that time, there once existed a specific date colleges could began practice and scrimmage games.

Rather than wait for the next day his teams would hold practice at 12:01 a.m. therefore causing no violation of rules with the NCAA. I checked Driesell’s coaching record, in those 41 years there are only three seasons recorded where his teams lost more than they won, an outstanding record. He retired from coaching while at Georgia State in 2003. Driesell’s been a double-honoree enshrined in the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2007 and in 2018 the College Basketball Hall of Fame. Charles Grice Driesell is better known by his nickname Lefty, another name in the line of basketball you should know.

It’s a joke until it becomes serious

I never saw Babe Ruth hit a home run, despite the fact he never competed against black players his 714-career home run record still remains. I never saw Jesse Owens run could he have beaten Usain Bolt…I don’t know. The point I’m attempting to make once again is how can we successfully compete against players from another era? We could claim Shaq could beat Wilt but really how do we know? This is where we began again with a comment from the Big Aristotle.

Shaq said “I would have busted Wilt’s ***, this is where the problem begins. A letter writer says, “I never saw Wilt play so I’m taking Shaq,” do you see the error of that statement. I have made a joke with my young co-worker Kennan, he’s said, “If it’s not on video it didn’t occur” and we both laugh. The truth is I cannot decide because I haven’t witnessed a thing it fails to exist. Wilt passed away in 1999 at the age of 63 so even if he were alive there would be no ability to provide us proof. If Shaq believes he could beat Wilt that’s okay, as proof of his prowess Shaq offers us his opinion of his position.

You didn’t ask…I’m tellin’

This is just a portion of a conversation held on Friday. My wife asked me “Did you watch the game (Catlin Clark Iowa) last night?” My response was no, this from her, “You have a problem with women’s basketball?” This is the explanation for my wife and you, I have no issues with the women’s game I grew up watching basketball from a male perspective. Despite this fact I can say in truth there are large numbers of very talented female athletes and Catlin Clark is one of many.

The numbers of women playing the game and at a high skill level has continued to grow over time. I believe the formation of the WNBA has been a contributing factor plus the games being available on ESPN has certainly aided growth. Unlike a number of males I am willing to admit the truth in the WNBA there are portions of the game equal or superior to that played by men. There was no explanation required on my part however I wanted to state my perspective and provide you a basis for the why. The WHY being so little mention of women’s basketball and the WNBA.  

I’m unsure

We are at the NBA All-Star break and let’s check another account of our resident wunderkind Victor Wembanyama. There is no argument…well maybe just from a few, Wemby is the top rookie in the NBA. Post season awards should see him named NBA Rookie of the Year. The headline is only my opinion however I’m going to take an opposing view from most. You remember all the cynics who once claimed with his limited playing weight opposing NBA players would “break his bones.”

He’s not Superman, the NBA season is long and the hope is he is able to avoid injury. At 210 pounds or whatever and based on his numbers maybe gaining weight might be a view of the past. Wemby’s speed racing up and down on the court might be inhibited with additional pounds. His quickness has allowed him to lead the NBA in blocked shots a feat few rookies have accomplished. Wemby’s numbers have been limited by the amount of minutes he spends on the court (28.4). His FG percentage is nearly 47% a game with 32% from three. He shoots an outstanding 81% from the free throw line, he’s scoring nearly 21 points 10 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. Did I forget something, yes I did Wemby is the NBA leader in blocked shots. Producing numbers similar to this is it necessary for him to gain weight, I say an emphatic NO it just might reduce his effort defensively and offensively?

You might remember I once wrote of a quadrable double game the late Nate Thurmond registered back in the day. While playing for the Bulls in a game against the Hawks Thurmond registered 22 points, 14 rebounds, 13 assists and 12 blocked shots. Since this effort there have been 3 other NBA players to record quadrable doubles, Alvin Robertson, David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon. Will Wemby be the next, it was pointed out Wemby was a mere 5 assists short of a quadrable double in his most recent game against the Raptors. Am I placing too much promise on the broad shoulders of Wemby, I don’t think so. It appears to me his desire is to be the best in the NBA now and maybe all-time who knows?

My Top 10 Los Angeles basketball players

Earlier I posted the Top 10 NYC basketball players, it’s now time to turn to Southern Cal specially Los Angeles. Who are they if you think Lew Alcindor-Kareem Abdul Jabbar forget including him. It was UCLA basketball and John Wooden however he was born in and first came to prominence as a NYC guy. I’m unsure if I mentioned in the other poll, this is mix of high school, college and NBA athletes. If you check the list there are names I omitted, these are the best of the best in my view, with that said here goes:

How tall are you son?

I located a YouTube video regarding the height of NBA players. I watched about half of the video and found little surprising in it. This to me might prove interesting, maybe from the earliest times heights have been inflated for basketball players. I have no idea of the why just a guess, it might have been to intimidate the opposition. As an example we know from history we know how adept Bill Russell was at blocking shots.

Officially Russell is listed as 6 foot 10 however many believe he was only 6 foot 9. He once said, “I can’t block every shot taken around the basket but if I can convince you I can.” There you have the intimidation or psych factor at work in full effect. There is another factor to consider, I’m unsure if this exists now but evidently it did at one time. This story about former Knick great Willis Reed was supposed to have occurred while he played at Grambling. In the same vein of Russell if you check Reed’s bio it indicates he was 6 foot 10, that was not the case either. According to a story I once read the coach at Grambling asked Reed his height, he said 6 foot 9. The coach is reported to have told him you are 6 foot 10, in the NBA they pay more for guys at that height. Now I have no idea if the story ever occurred and second to that I have no idea if NBA teams have a monetary payment scale. I’m somewhat skeptical of height measurement of players unless I have actual proof as I did in two instances.

If we check his bio it indicates Nate “Tiny” Archibald is 6 foot 1, no way is he that tall. Once I had an occasion to stand next to him and it’s my belief he’s no more than 5 foot 11. Clay Johnson played for a brief period in the NBA, Johnson is from KC so when his NBA career was over he returned home. I met him about 4 years ago, his bio claims he’s 6 foot 4, by my height I believe he might be closer to 6-foot 2 ½.

This is pure speculation

A report is circulating that the Lakers are amenable to drafting Bronny James. There’s been no declaration by him of an intention to submit his name to the NBA draft. Usually news of that type comes at the conclusion of the college season. In all likelihood the question will remain unresolved until April 2 at the earliest. As you can see bunches of things must occur first for this possibility but let’s speculate like several writers.

As I’ve indicated I have no scouting credentials I’m just a fan. With that I have not been impressed with Bronny and this was prior to his health issue. LeBron wants to play basketball with his son we get that, is Bronny worth a draft choice…for me that’s an emphatic no. If I’m sitting in the seat of Rob Pelinka I’d have a heart to heart with LeBron and ask him which team he would desire a trade. That might appear I’ve given up on LeBron however that is not the case. Let’s just say I’m less impressed with Bronny at this point over that of his dad.

Ain’t happening

Depending on your age how much do you know about the American Basketball Association? Chances are if you are 60 or more you probably still have little knowledge about the upstart league. Where am I going with this account, an ABA reminiscence group exists on social media and I read this from a contributor. “It sure would be nice if those former ABA teams had a night honoring their ABA past.” The first response from a member of the group, “The NBA has no desire to return to a derisive period in basketball history.”

I imagine an additional thought could be added, none of the teams the Spurs, Pacers, Nuggets or Nets have owners from the period 48 years ago. Nostalgia Night or something similar is stuff driven by management and not fans. I’m changing sports but this is an example, the Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs were an original American Football League team. They were in competition with NFL teams at the time for talent, once the two leagues merged and became one it was over i.e., the rivalry. The Chiefs desire to beat the 49ers is strictly as an opponent it has little to do with an AFL-NFL rivalry which no longer exists as it once did.

I first became acquainted with Derik Queen through the Kansas basketball fan site. The question was asked, “Is Derik Queen still a possibility for Kansas” or something similar. I then began scouring various websites, two I found listed him as 6 foot 9 while two others said it was 6 foot 10. As for his weight it’s either 220, 230 or 245 pounds, pick which one works best for you. In any event Queen is awarded 5 stars by Rivals and 247Sports and is 4 star rated by On3.

The Kansas website indicates Bill Self and crew are trying to convince Queen to attend Kansas. As for the present time this young man who hails from Baltimore Maryland is in his senior year at Montverde Academy in Florida. Although this Class of 2024 prospect’s made no formal declaration it would appear Kansas is no longer in the picture or that’s what we are led to believe. Rivals FutureCast places Queen at 100% to attend Maryland. As for the others, On3 and 247Sports indicate Queen is leaning heavily in the direction of Maryland.

Donald Sterling’s to blame

I know, Sterling hasn’t owned the Clippers since 2014, that’s the year Steve Ballmer purchased the team. As for the headline I have no issues with Ballmer it’s the fact I believe the Clippers should still reside in San Diego. The history says this was the first instance of Sterling operating as a maverick. It was 1984 and the record indicates the owner moved the team north without NBA approval. I contend Sterling looked at the NFL and the move of the Raiders from Oakland to Los Angeles.

The NFL sued the late Al Davis but lost in a court fight, I believe to this day that was the basis for the NBA move. There were problems in San Diego I believe arena and attendance which became the basis for the Sterling move. Sterling a Cali person probably never considered other locations such as Miami, Vancouver, Toronto, Minnesota or Charlotte. The NBA would later place expansion teams in each of the named city’s. I have long contended one team for one city, I know what you are going to say…what about NYC? I cannot respond to that except to express my position on the matter.

He’s tight with his money

Over the years I’ve read a number of stories and maybe you have to about Michael Jordan. These accounts claim His Airness is quite stingy with his money, this despite the fact he’s now reported to be a billionaire. In any event it’s been said “He would rather spend your money than his own.” I have no method to prove or disprove this account however a portion of the following story is true because there was a legal judgment rendered.

As the story goes this particular store used his likeness in a series of commercials, the only issue they appeared to have done this without securing a contract from Jordan on the matter. Jordan attorney’s filed a lawsuit against the Chicago area department chain and the matter went to trial. The court rendered judgement in Jordan’s favor and this was the final portion of the story. Jordan was reported to have the $8.9 million check cashed and the funds distributed to 23 Chicago area charities he believes benefit citizens.

How is he a help

Reading the comments from a number of fans I thought a further look was required. The account  focused on the 10-block night of Victor Wembanyama and it caused a flood of letters to pour in. Most generally contained the same tone, “If he (Wemby) is so good why hasn’t he made the Spurs a better team” or similar words?” Let’s check a bit of history, it was the 2018-19 NBA season. The Spurs finished that season with a 48-34 record, that was the last year the team finished above .500.

Since then it’s been seasons of 32, 33, 34 and last season it was 22 wins. There is no intent to indicate the Spurs are that much better however there is the future. It’s always been my belief that a basketball team be it college or the NBA can be turned around to perform significantly speedier than a football team. As an example in football you can have the best defense in the world but if your team lacks a quality performer at quarterback your team is unlikely to find itself as a championship contender. Don’t confuse my statement, a single superior talent even in basketball cannot turn a team completely around. There are pieces required in football and basketball to attain success it’s just my belief the job is so much easier in basketball or baseball.

I have no idea the length of time coach Pop will be in place however I believe in his ability to build a team, and at the same time injury free I believe in the growth (not necessarily the height) of Wemby’s game over time. In closing his defense, Wemby is providing distance between himself and Jazz center Walker Kessler presently in second place in block shot stats. I’ve long believed playing tough defense requires more effort from an individual player than an offensive effort.

Power 5 to Mid-major and then Power 5      

Hold on a moment, Houston basketball actually traveled from Power 5 to mid-major and back to Power 5. This was not the starting point but more recently Houston was a member of the defunct Southwest Conference, which was Power 5, the SWC ceased operations and the school moved to Conference USA. From there the next move would be the American Athletic Conference and last July it was the Big XII. In any event there might have been questions moving into the Big XII,

The most critical would the Houston Cougars be competitive with the move? They hit the ground running, after being one of the best teams in the AAC they have become one of the best of the Big XII. As this is written they have a total of 21 wins, although they lost their game against Kansas they are tied for first place in the conference. So what do we suppose the future path of this program, should Kelvin Sampson remain head coach they will be competitive. The Big XII Conference might have become one of the most wide-open races in the nation. The domination by Kansas basketball might truly be at an end, we shall see.

One of the best   

If we held a discussion of NBA All-Time great centers, it’s highly likely no one would mention the name Artis Gilmore. Our conversation would include the usual suspect, Wilt, Kareem, Russell, Shaq and maybe Bob Lanier. Someone might bring up the name of Nate Thurmond or David Robinson, few would mention Gilmore. Spurs fans are seething at this point, “You didn’t mention Tim Duncan.” Although Timmy stood 7 feet tall the bulk of his play was spent as a power forward, he formed a twin tower combo with David Robinson. As for Gilmore during his ABA/NBA career he scored over 24,000 points along with nearly 12,000 rebounds. Despite beginning his professional career with the ABA Kentucky Colonels, he would spend additional time as a member of the Bulls and Spurs.

You might ask the question why is Gilmore so invisible compared to several of the other names, it’s likely his demeanor? He didn’t have the personality of a Wilt nor draw the media to him as Shaq did, he might have been closer in personality to Bill Russell. Gilmore nicknamed the A-Train quietly scored, rebounded the basketball and blocked shots for three franchises. Opposing players plus his teammates knew he was on the floor. Gilmore was born 74 years ago in Chipley Florida, he arrived in the ABA from Jacksonville University. In 2011 a long over-due honor came his way being inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame. Since his playing days ended Gilmore’s been active in the Jacksonville Florida community. Artis Gilmore a link to the rich history of basketball.

Age is a number     

You’ve heard the old statement “father time remains undefeated.” It’s certainly understandable, as players age they are unable to continue playing at a high skill level. No matter the sport think about this a minute consider how many athletes you’ve witnessed become slower and slower as their ability to play at a high skill level begins to wane. The slowing down applies to everyone except LeBron James are at least it seems that appears to be the case. December 30, LeBron turned 39 year of age, despite this fact he’s not the oldest player ever in the NBA.

Vince Carter a.k.a. Vincensantiy was 43-years old prior to his retirement, in truth most of his game had disappeared over time. Robert “Chief” Parrish retired as 44 years of age; those are but two who managed to continue play after the age of 40. There is no doubt LeBron James is special, special due to his immense talent and special in managing his career outside of basketball. He’s become the NBA’s all-time scoring record holder beating the mark established by Kareen Abdul Jabbar. Like you I’ve read a great deal of hate mail aimed at LeBron James over his career. I’m sure for a number of you he might not be your favorite player but you've got to give him his props. 39-year old LeBron cannot play at the level of a 29-year old.

I was conducting research on NCAA single season scoring. Like you I was aware of the scoring prowess of the late Pete Maravich. His seasonal scoring represents his sophomore, junior and senior season, at that time freshman were ineligible. Maravich averaged 43.8, 44.2 and 44.5 points a game in 1969-70 his senior year. Imagine the prolific scoring without benefit of a three-point line which came into existence much later. Maravich might have been aided because his father was LSU head basketball coach at the time. Despite the numbers you are reading the first player to break the 40-point barrier was a player lost on most of us.

His name was Frank Selvy and he played at Furman, the 1953-54 season witnessed Selvy registering 41.7 points a game but wait there is more. In 1953 there is another name lost in the annals of basketball history, his name is Bevo Francis. He played his basketball at Rio Grande College (now the University of Rio Grande) in Ohio. The NCAA indicates Francis averaged 48.3 points per game but the number was actually higher. Francis averaged 50.1 points however it’s said a number of the games were omitted because they were played against junior college teams. We must conclude in that era rules were not strict regarding scheduling. I cannot imagine Penn Valley Community College located in Kansas City playing Mizzou.

We don’t know

The 10-block shot effort of Victor Wembanyama is certainly outstanding. What if I told you that’s not the highest number ever registered? What if I told you we have no idea how many shots Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain blocked? The single game block shot record is held by a player few in this generation are familiar with, his name Elmore Smith and he played for the Lakers. The number below represents the highest individual block shots in a game:

Bol, Eaton and Smith had multiple games of blocked shots, that's the basis for their names appearing more than once. Now for the real puzzle, we don’t have any idea of the Russell-Chamberlain blocks for one reason…the time period. Russell was drafted in the NBA in 1956 and Chamberlain 1958, the league didn't began tracking block shots until the 1973-74 season. Russell retired from the NBA in 1969 while Chamberlain retired the year before they began tracking block shots.    

LeBron’s last season?

This might be the last season for LeBron James in a Laker jersey if his situation unfolds as I believe it might. The future is clearly based on two moves, the decision of Bronny James to leave or remain in college. A number of mock draft sites project him as a mid to late first round pick. Based on this IF Bronny decides to submit his name for the 2024 draft the next move will be LeBron’s. 

This is in the area of speculation, the Lakers may or may not be in a position to draft Bronny. I don’t believe they would be willing to draft him for one simple reason. The one area the Lakers have a plethora of is guards, the possibility of adding Bronny to the roster just doesn’t compute. So this occurs ______ drafts Bronny, at that point LeBron asks the Lakers to trade him to said team. LeBron ends his Hall of Fame career with his son playing alongside him, I could foresee this occurring.

Top 25

The Sycamores of Indiana State have a rich history, for two seasons the legendary John Wooden served as head coach. In 1975 an athlete by the name of Larry Bird enrolled at Indiana State, his basketball exploits allowed the school to become known nationwide. They were so good the Sycamores earned a Top 25 ranking, of course that left after Bird departed. The Sycamores continued to play good basketball however there was little national notice.

I’m sure every time the team made the news someone would say, “Isn’t that Larry Bird’s school.” Fast forward to February 2024 the Sycamores have returned, the latest Top 25 AP Poll places them the number 23 team in the nation. Two things, this is not the final poll and second to that this disclaimer. I stated recently to ignore Top 25 polls instead preferring the NET, with the nostalgia associated with Indiana State it was noteworthy to bring it to your attention, Go Sycamores. This is the school’s first inclusion in the poll since the 1978-79 season, they have a 22-3 record as this is written.

The Knicks

As one of the three Basketball of America teams remaining its good. You might remember the BAA begin play in 1946 with 16 teams. In 2024 only the Celtics, Knicks and Warriors remain, the Warriors are the only team relocating from their original home. In any event it is good the Knicks are competitive again but is a successful NBA team in NYC a necessity? From my perspective I say no, I speak with no voice of authority I’m simply looking at the history. The Knicks have been winners since the arrival of coach Tom Thibodeau in 2020, before that it was a different matter.

In 2001 Jeff Van Gundy left the Knicks and they finished with a 30-52 record, it would be losing season after losing season until the 2010-11 season. The Knicks finished with a 42-40 record, although the win-loss record wasn’t great they did earn playoff berths for the next three seasons under Mike D’Antoni and when he left Mike Woodson. It was the 2020-21 season and the hire of Thibodeau before the Knicks became competitive again. They will earn a playoff berth this season, the front office has made several moves that might be considered for the stretch run. As you might note the league functioned without an effective team in NYC, the league will always do that. Despite my statement it is good to have an effective team playing at the Garden, in addition are they true contenders this season?

My Top 10 NYC basketball players  

This from an earlier publication, it’s worth a second glance I believe. Over the generations New York City basketball has turned out a who’s who list of outstanding basketball talent over the years. Once upon a time the majority of the city’s talent remained in the metro, they attended St. John’s, Columbia, Iona, Rutgers, and others. All that’s changed now in more recent years, high school talent has left the city in droves for other programs throughout the country. 

Metro NYC continues to produce some of the best basketball talent in the nation it’s just visible in other portions of the country. A recent example would be the Knicks 2020 pick Obi Topping, born in Brooklyn he played his basketball at the University of Dayton. As for the history even basketball hotbeds like Chicago, Los Angeles and others cannot compete with this list. Keep in mind we are discussing high school talent; we are excluding any pro career they might have experienced.

Our list is the top 10 athletes believe to represent the best of the best high school basketball talent.  There are several others who could have been included but were omitted, it certainly wasn’t intentional your list might contain them. We could have included Albert King, Felipe Lopez, Lance Stephenson, Sebastian Telfair, Rafer Alston and Ron Artest who barely missed my cut. Although my decision was difficult, I must state the names mentioned and perhaps others were excluded due to space rather than talent in choosing my Top 10 All-Time greatest list.

"He’s 8 feet 3"

This is a Victor Wembanyama report, fair warning in advance if you wish to avoid it. Monday evening Wemby had a monster game against the Raptors as he filled the stat sheet. The Spurs beat the Raptors 122-99 rather convincingly thanks in part to Wemby’s game. 27 points, 14 rebounds 5 assists 2 steals plus 10 blocked shots added to his NBA leading block shot total. 

His scoring and defensive prowess was accomplished in only 29 minutes of action, in addition he shot 71% from the floor plus 50% from the 3-line. Wemby joins 4 other players all in the Naismith Hall of Fame to register similar numbers during their career and he accomplished this on Monday.  After reading the account of the block shot game one fan said this, “He should have a game like this he's 8 feet 3 tall. We know he's not that tall but I'd bet money Raptor players might have thought that. 

It’s tough remaining loyal

I’m unsure if I mentioned this at a point regarding Mizzou basketball, I held no belief this would be another 25-win season for Dennis Gates. The Tigers lost two key players to the NBA, Kobe Brown and D’Moi Hodge. Although the transfer portal brought in talent I believed could compete I wasn’t as sure about the status of the team after a few tough non-con games. The prospect of a difficult SEC schedule worried me but that was only the beginning. This Tiger team is not very good but I really have no idea how good they could have been beset by so many injuries.

Two names will be mentioned, Sean East II, the efficient guard who has been responsible for 30-40% of the Tigers offense. East has been sidelined with an injury for two consecutive games. Guard Nick Honor has played nowhere close to what he exhibited last season in my view. If this appears an excuse to you have my permission to stop at this point, I will not be the least bit offended. I can say this as a loyal fan, I’m disappointed but my faith in Gates has not waned one iota. If you are a member of Mizzou Nation upset with losing and doubly upset with the coach I’m not writing to convince you to my side. All I can do at this point is “ride out the storm” and look forward to next season. Next season when according to all sites a Top four recruiting class arrives on campus.

Rookies not named Wembanyama

The two in the headline have made the race for Rookie of the Year competitive, I believe Wemby will be named the winner with Chet Holmgren coming in second. What about the others, are there rookies distinguishing themselves in the season? Earlier Jamie Jaquez Jr of the Heat and the Hornets Brandon Miller had been mentioned…who else is playing? We heard a great deal regarding Scoot Henderson who played for G League Team Elite, the Blazers drafted him maybe to replace Dame Lillard. I’ve yet to see Henderson in action however his numbers appear competitive, 12.8 points and 4.6 assists a game.

Henderson’s FG percentage certainly could be increased a bit (37.3%), he should be at least in the 40% range. In other names not Wembanyama or Holmgren we have Dereck Lively II who plays for the Mavericks, the 7-foot 1 230 pound Lively has been a pleasant addition to the Mavs roster. There are certainly many others who have contributed to this seasons rookie class. The other consideration are those we don’t know, they have received little if any playing time. On the other hand a few have not made the adjustment to NBA play. At the same time a few have been “farmed out” like Emoni Bates drafted by the Cavs, we believe they can play at the NBA level but have no idea until he and others are given time to prove they are the real deal.

The shoe history     

“Must be the shoes” was the catchphrase uttered by Mars Blackmon a.k.a. Spike Lee in all those Nike commercials. Some might be too young to have seen the commercials made during the playing career of Michael Jordan. Just in case you are unfamiliar, these were advertisements I believed propelled Michael Jordan to the top of the basketball shoe market. In fact the play of MJ plus ads for the shoes may have indirectly been responsible for the Air Jordan brand separating itself from the parent company Nike.

What is interesting today is the variety and stylings of basketball footwear. Even more interesting the days of a team be it college or NBA all wearing the same shoe are long gone. In fact I’ve seen games where a player’s right (or left) shoe might be an unlike color of the other. This was worth mentioning again the original Air Jordan’s were prohibited from being worn by MJ, the problem was the shoes were not a single color. This was a requirement at the time, either solid white or black. Depending on your age you might find that difficult but that was the rules in place at the time. Of course the NBA would later relent and the balance of the story is part of basketball history.

No…at least for now

Several might remember reading the owner of the Wizards and Capitals wanted a new arena. The plan was to build it in Alexandria Virginia not far from Capital One arena in the District of Columbia. Well that plan no longer exists at least for the immediate time being. The Senate Finance Committee has no plans to move the bill forward due to concerns regarding taxpayers. Naturally owner Ted Leonsis is not pleased with this news, he claims the opponents of the Potomac Yard project have concerns but not the clear picture of the development.
