If you are under age 40 you are spoiled
Have you seen any of the AT&T U Verse commercials? Usually there are two older children discussing what they lacked when they were younger. After pointing out the virtues of U Verse they conclude “these kids don’t know how good they have it.” The point of the commercial is how many options you have with U Verse. Well I’m not promoting U Verse however I can relate to the older children's perspective. I turned on my television Friday evening and with my cable package I had a number of options. In the day of cable/satellite and other devices basketball fans have choices.
I could chose one of two NBA games or a like number of college games. As I wrote awhile back we had the choice of one afternoon national collegiate game and one Big 8 game that was it. As for the NBA after the Christmas day game we could look forward to a Game of the Week on Sunday afternoon that was it. Once upon a time the semi-finals and the championship NCAA game was it, telecasts from start to finish didn’t exist. The same for the NBA, the first championship won by Magic Johnson was not telecast live. Fans were forced to wail until 10:30 Central Time to view the game. Should I repeat the U Verse theme again, no need you see the picture.
What do you think?
Did you happen to check out the tee-shirt jerseys on December 25th? Is it thumbs up or thumbs down on them? Better yet have you even formulated an opinion on them? I have my thoughts but this time I’m going to leave the question unanswered from me.
I wonder
I’m a Kobe fan but even with him I have limits. Question, why is Kobe leading Western Conference back court voting, he’s only played six games? Same for the Eastern Conference voting, Derrick Rose is in third place. Rose has played in 10 of the Bulls 28 games. I forgot All Star voting is in the hands of fans, that explains it.
Why does the NBA return after the fact to say “sorry we made a mistake?” I speak of the Blake Griffin ejection in their game against the Warriors. To simply say he shouldn’t have been ejected fixes nothing. Are the officials under the type of pressure that forces them into incorrect decisions?
Did the Nets make the correct choice in hiring Jason Kidd? No debate on his decision making as a player, as for coaching decisions that might be another matter. The NBA requires more than OJT (on the job training) for a head coach. On the other hand it seemed to work for the Warriors Mark Jackson.
It matters not because it’s only a mock draft, what is it I speak of? The rise of
Kansas center Joel Embiid since August. NBADraft.net has projected Embiid as the number one pick in their 2014 mock draft.
“Amazing Grace and Chuck"
Was the title of a 1987 movie featuring Alex English; English starred in the movie as a fictional Boston Celtics player. Although he played for more than one NBA team he never wore Celtic green with the exception of this movie. English spent 17 years of his Hall of Fame career as a member of the Denver Nuggets. This slim 6-7 190 pound sharpshooter scored over 25,000 points and retired with a 21.5 ppg average. The career numbers for English fail to provide you an adequate and true picture of him. His Hall of Fame selection speaks volumes for the player he was, English was voted in as a member of the 1997 Hall of Fame class.
“He marches to the beat of a different drummer”
I’ve always taken the above quote to indicate rather than follow the pack you establish your own method, so it is with Greg Popovich. Media was always fond of poking fun at Phil Jackson for his sometimes informal manner of coaching. Well Phil has long since retired however he’s got a clone in San Antonio in Greg Popovich. The two might be total opposite personality it’s just the manner they chose to coach. Last season Pop got in trouble with the NBA for sending Duncan, Parker and Ginobili home early.
The three didn’t play in the last game of a road trip; of course Pop was fined by the NBA. We no with travel and back to back games NBA teams don‘t really practice. They will go through a morning shoot-around and that’s about it. The Spurs had a heavy road schedule during November and December. Pop was asked by a member of the media when was the last time the Spurs practiced. It’s reported he said he couldn’t remember he’d been giving his team the day off.

The schedule
Christmas Day games officially signal the beginning of the NBA season. We realize teams have been playing since November. For some reason the networks approach the Christmas games as the official NBA start. In any event the NBA always attempts to schedule those games which would gain the maximum number of viewers. Unfortunately plans don’t always materialize as planed. The league believed a Bulls-Nets match would be a great match to telecast. Unfortunately the Rose injury and the Nets poor play have caused the match to fall short of NBA hopes. We could make a similar claim for the Thunder-Knicks game, sure the Thunder are playing good ball as for the Knicks that’s another story. Next up was the Lakers and Heat, it was believed the Heat had a clear advantage but the Lakers would have Kobe back from injury. The NBA was partially correct Kobe returned but only lasted six games before succumbing to injury again.
The NCAA at it’s very best
I came across a story written in a June 2011 edition of Words eye view. Portions of this account are dated now, Kutcher became a cast member of Two and a Half Men the following September. In addition he and Demi Moore are no longer married but that’s not the focus of this story, this is the NCAA at its best, read and enjoy. Bottom line you too could be considered an agent of your alma mater I would guess.
I researched Ashton Kutcher's bio due to a USA Today story I read. Most are aware Ashton Kutcher replaced Charlie Sheen on "Two and a Half Men." Bet you didn't know Kutcher was an agent for the University of Iowa? Kutcher attended the school before dropping out and eventually heading to Hollywood. Ashton Kutcher and two former Hawkeye players met with high school recruits in September 2010. This is taken from the USA Today story. "NCAA rules prohibit recruits from having contact with people considered to be representatives of athletic interests.” The former basketball players and Kutcher were named as representatives in the Iowa report." I don't make this stuff up, I only report it.
Free throws
The emphasis is on “free” and nobody receives a pass on shooting them. Hall of Fame athlete Rick Barry once said; “nobody is guarding you, it should be the easiest shot in basketball.” I think we might conclude Barry knew the subject matter well. He shot .893 over the course of his 14 year career; separately it was .880 in the ABA and .900 in the NBA. Consider this, court length the 3-point line and other variables exist depending on the level of competition. Did you realize standing at the free throw line the distance to the basket is 15 feet. It doesn’t matter if we are discussing junior high basketball, high school, college or the NBA. The only difference is FIBA which measures at 15.9 feet. It’s my belief a portion of the difficulty shooting free throws kids don’t practice it enough. In addition it’s not exciting for the shooter; they grow up with the mind set of scoring a 3-point basket in the waning seconds of a game. Shooting free-throws is just not cool, sexy whatever adjective you wish to used. The honor of the worst free throw shooter in the NBA doesn’t belong to Dwight Howard. DeAndre Jordan of the Clippers holds the honor shooting a sizzling .407 from the line.
Bits n Pieces
It’s probably not that big a deal but I thought for sure Mizzou would drop out of the Top 25 after the Illinois game. They are still a good team they just didn’t play well enough to win the game. I make no predictions on the SEC race I’m certainly unsure at this stage if Kentucky is the best team in the conference.
I have been derelict in my duties; I intended to see UMKC play before in person prior to conference play. I hope fans of the program are not discouraged with the 3-8 record, its going to take time for Coach Richardson to turn this program around. I realize the coach was on Rick Pitino’s staff but why did he decide to schedule a game against Louisville?
There is fair amount of criticism emanating at times from Words eye view. There is one complaint I hope you never hear from me. I’ll read a letter on the NBA and this follows; “I quite watching the NBA once Michael Jordan retired.” I’ve often wondered if you don’t follow the NBA anymore why I should pay attention to anything you might say.
A week or so back I wrote Kansas may not be the best team in the State of Kansas; I bestowed the honor on Wichita State. The Lawrence school may not even be the best team in the Big XII Conference. Oklahoma State, Iowa State and Baylor all have better records to this point, the conference race this season might prove quite interesting.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays
I will remain a fan
Here we go again; another proposal to “fix” the NBA draft has been laid out. A buddy of mine sent me an email regarding a proposal to revise the draft, he asked my opinion of it. I’m unsure if this “Wheel of Fortune” approach will address the concerns of the conspiracy theorists. I’m going to give where it’s due, I didn’t pose this scenario a fan did. “Player A knows the Raptors have the first pick in the June draft; because the order is known in advance he knows which team has the first pick next season. Realizing the Lakers (Rockets or Spurs) might have the first pick the following year what prevents him from remaining in school?” I haven’t read the proposal in detail but it appears there is nothing to prevent this from occurring.
I could foresee new conspiracies emerging from the lips of these same folks. In 1985 we had the bent lottery card which allowed the commissioner to award the Knicks the first pick---Patrick Ewing. How about this one, the Cavs re-payed for losing LeBron James allowing Cleveland to win two out of the last three draft lotteries. Folks sometimes forget for every draft bust there exist draft gems. I don’t think anyone envisioned Dwayne Wade would rise to All Pro status when he arrived from Marquette. More recently we could make the same statement regarding Paul George out of Fresno State. Kawhi Leonard (San Diego State) and Kenneth Faried (Morehead State) have both become important contributor to the Spurs and Nuggets.
Officials don’t decide the games outcome
Mizzou lost the annual Braggin’ Rights game to Illinois Saturday 65-64. A fan wrote complaining of what he believed was a travel on a Illinois player late in the game. “If the referee had blown his whistle the Mizzou player would not have fouled him,” the Mizzou foul resulted in free-throws. The Illinois player sank 1 of 2 free-throws which constituted the margin of victory. Teams should play the game in order to not force an official to “decide” the game. Court-space is limited in basketball compared to other sports but I maintain it remains one of the most difficult sports to officiate. Play well enough to win so there is no need for officiating to be called into question.
I’m uncomfortable
After the Saturday night blowout by the Warriors over the Lakers I’m concerned. When Kobe went down I reconciled myself to the fact there would be no playoff for this years team. I looked ahead to the 2014 draft hoping the Lakers would be able to add additional youth and athleticism to the team. Unfortunately for me the coaching issue is becoming more and more of a concern. This is all rear view mirror but allow me to place the vehicle in reverse, I was not a Mike Brown fan (still ain’t). He was the Jim Buss choice for coach so I went along with it, you know what occurred Brown was fired 5 or 6 games into his second year at the helm. Word circulated Phil Jackson would be re-hired and all Laker fans were excited with the prospect of his return. Buss did it again; he hired Mike D’Antoni who left the Knicks under a cloud. We said okay again believing Buss had made the best decision and one that satisfied him. D’Antoni is certainly not responsible for the rash of injuries that have hit the team this season.
Maybe it’s his tiring of answering questions posed by the media I’m a little displeased with the appearance of caviler responses at press conferences. I fail to believe he is unconcerned about winning his post-game comments are not received by me (and other Laker fans) in the best light. Once upon a time the Kansas City Chiefs had a coach (Hank Stram) who was highly successful; in fact he led them to their only Super Bowl win. Not all at once but gradually the NFL game changed and I believe the coach did not adapt. In addition the players the team had behind the Hall of Fame players were unable to play at the level of those they replaced. The key issue in Stram's press conferences he tried to persuade fans “there’s nothing wrong.” D'Antoni seems to have adopted the same mentality recently. He said; “fans need to find another team if they are discouraged.“ You don't insult the fans of any team, a day later he apoligized. That’s kinda where I am with D’Antoni, I don’t think he’s a bad guy I just don’t think he’s the right coach for this team.
We thought we knew all the names
Every August we are witnesses to a number of high profile freshman arriving on campus.
The names of this crop were familiar to most of us; it was the belief of many the number would distinguish themselves at their respective schools. The names were Wiggins, Parker, Randle, Gordon and others not mentioned here. There are always surprise additions to the talent mix, earlier we mentioned Joel Embiid at Kansas. This 7-footers game has matured to the point he’s projected a top 5 pick in June should he decide on the NBA. The latest surprise name might be Zach LaVine a 6-5 180 pound point guard at UCLA. His numbers are modest (12.8 ppg and 2.0 assists) at this point and this should not be an endorsement he’s headed to the NBA. Lavine is just one of a number of qualify freshman to emerge in this young collegiate season and a surprise.

Boy the injuries
I'm sure there might have been another season similar to this. A season there was a number of significant injuries to front line players. The vast majority of players are on the injury list on a day to day basis as for the others it’s been much longer. I don’t just speak of my Lakers with Kobe, Farmar, Blake and Nash all on the sidelines. Late last week it was announced Nets center Brook Lopez has a broken foot and will miss the balance of the season. Of course we knew Derrick Rose was re-injured and also out for the season.
There are several players who are holdovers from last season. They are the Knicks Amar’e Stoudemire and he is yet to play a complete game this season. Also missing in action is teammate Tyson Chandler who should return any day now after missing a number of games. Of course we include Rajon Rondo who’s also a holdover from last season. Rondo is expected to play his first game of the season next month. The Nuggets Danilo Gallinari also remains on the injured list from last season. Any sport suffers when star players are missing for a number of games.
The other Dukee
ESPN’s Dick Vitale is fond of using Dukee to describe an athlete at Duke University. I borrowed it for the lead in of this piece. Over and over I’ve stated the difficulty of comparing players especially those who played in different era‘s. The idea is to provide you the manner of play of an athlete who may be familiar to you. The day after Kansas played Duke and Kentucky was matched against Michigan State the airways were full of conversation regarding the three high profile freshman. They are Kentucky’s Julius Randle, Andrew Wiggins of Kansas and Duke’s Jabari Parker.
Someone declared Parker’s game was comparable to Grant Hill; a number of us have forgotten how injuries robbed Hill of much of his game during his NBA career. See if you can locate video of his days with the Pistons and see the talent Hill displayed early. Check it out for yourself and see the similarity in the play of Parker and Hill. Even more interesting physically they are nearly identical in size. Both are listed as 6-8 and they are nearly the same weight, Parker at 235 pounds and Hill at 225.
If this sounds as excuse so be it
At the beginning of the season I made my best guess the Lakers would make the playoffs. There is no method to project future injuries, I had no idea the Lakers would lose three point guards. First it was Steve Nash later its backup Jordan Farmar. Steve Blake backup to Nash went down; he may have been playing the best basketball of his NBA career. Kobe Bryant was forced to handle point guard duties after all these injuries and then he falls victim to injury after a brief six games.
Kobe will be out a minimum of six weeks, how does this impact the 2013-14 Lakers? He could return by early February but there is probably not enough season remaining for the Lakers to make the playoffs. I don’t believe they will “tank” the season but they should begin an extensive scouting effort. For the first time in a number of years the Lakers have both draft picks, it's imperative they secure two players who aid their return to the playoffs. There it is once again the glass is either half-full or half empty.
Bits n Pieces
He played but 11 games in his freshman year, was he ready for the NBA? That was my question regarding Duke’s Kyrie Irving. All he did to answer my question was being named NBA Rookie of the Year in 2012. He has continued his stellar play leading the Cavs in just about everything.
Saw Mavs highlights on NBA TV and it made for a question. How old is Sean Marion? I looked it up; he’s the same age of Kobe Bryant (35). Funny I don’t ever remember hearing hear age questions regarding Marion. Of course I'm referring to the period prior to this most recent injury.
Naysayer’s continue to question Mizzou’s move from the Big XII to the SEC. They do this especially in light of what appears to be a standout Big XII this season. A reminder, this was a football move not basketball. Football programs pay the vast majority of a school’s athletic budget. There are always exceptions but that’s the basis for the move.
What’s a Swaggy P, that’s the nickname Laker guard/forward Nick Young has bestowed on Nick Young? I didn’t realize until this season he’s one of a group who never saw a shot he didn’t like.

Oh no, not again
Kobe Bryant was injured in Tuesdays game, he will miss a minimum of six weeks after suffering a fracture of the lateral tibial. Additional comment in Monday's edition of Words eye view.
They have money to burn
The Rockets would trade disgruntled center Omer Asik by December 19th. That story has been circulating for a few weeks now after Coach McHale discovered he and Howard could not be twin towers. As I pointed out previously we fans especially those of the Lakers need only look at this past season. Either Howard couldn’t or wouldn’t adapt to D’Antoni’s system with Gasol in the lineup. It’s not close to midnight as this is written but it appears a trade (at least for now) will not occur. Asik was reported to be headed to either the Celtics or 76ers but neither appeared to be finalized. The money to burn headline, Asik is being paid $10 million dollars a year to occupy a seat on the bench. I think I could swap places with Asik since there is no requirement for me to play center.
How long are you given a free pass?
Colin Cowherd of ESPN was discussing NFL football and its coaches one morning. He made the statement “how long does a coach receive a free pass when he‘s no longer been on the sidelines?” I believe Cowherd was referring to the fact at the time job openings occur the same few names always are mentioned. He pointed out two names always mentioned one of them being Jon Gruden. It was Cowherd’s belief winning a championship one time does not guarantee a life-time free pass. He pointed out Gruden and others as television analysts have removed themselves from the coaching ranks.
I don’t believe Cowherd was picking on Gruden and neither am I however it’s been 5 years since he last served as head coach. It’s been even further for his Super Bowl win (2003). Cowherd was discussing the NFL however I agree with his assessment. The same issue whether it’s media driven or not exists in the NBA. Former Knicks and Rocket Coach Jeff Van Gundy’s name continues to crop up whenever a coaching position opens. There is a key difference in my view; Gruden did lead his team to a successful Super Bowl win. Van Gundy teams have played in one NBA finals over the course of his 11 year coaching career.
Isn’t that interesting?
Someone points out a fact you were aware you had not voice it. A friend said; “have you noticed the kids who attend mid-majors (his word) remain in school four years. This is unlike the one and done players who might attend Kansas or Kentucky. These teams actually have a number of seniors. I said, “You realize the location of the school has nothing to do with a players NBA ability? Doug McDermott at Creighton will be drafted in June. Last year’s Rookie of the Year Damian Lillard played at Weber State.” An NBA team might be better served drafting an athlete from one of the smaller schools. Four years of play under their belt might better prepare them for NBA play.
What did they accomplish?
According to a panel of sports economists assembled by ESPN they claim the draft “fails to make bad teams good.” First off I have no economics degree however I think I can agree with most of their conclusions. I might ask the question is it really necessary to build your team through the draft? The number of NBA teams who are playoff bound and capable of winning a championship is small.
Of the 30 NBA teams realistically only 6 or 7 NBA teams in serious contention every season. Teams rise and fall, as example a few years back the Blazers looked as though they were going to move up. Through a series of incidents they fell back as a contender. They have moved back to the contender status after a several player moves. The question is easier answered than implemented. It’s my belief if you must have an anchor you can build around. There are three keys; capable coaching, first-rate front office and quality scouting are essential to deep playoff runs in successive seasons.

Even Bulls fans don’t like the pair! The above title may be a little misleading allow me to briefly explain. Critical remarks follow Carlos Boozer and Luol Deng; the majority of criticism comes from fans of the Bulls. They appear to be permanently upset with this power forward/small forward tandem. How many trade rumors have we heard regarding the two, I’ve lost track there have been so many. A friend and a Bulls fan always reminds me of how soft a game Boozer has, the statement is different regarding Deng. The breakdown centers on Deng’s inability to generate offense, in other words he needs a point guard to get him the ball. We realize Derrick Rose is the motor for the Bulls, it’s difficult to drive the vehicle with a motor needing a “tune-up” give the two a break Bulls fans.
They don’t know jack
I don’t know a whole lot, what I know I will claim it and continue even if it causes conflict. Example; I think I might have mentioned this in the past but it’s an indication people who are paid don’t always have a clue. If you remember last winter and spring Ben McLemore of Kansas was listed as the number one or two pick in most mock drafts. As we approached the June draft McLemore’s stock began to “slide” downward. The evening prior to the draft a local sports anchor indicated the Kansas freshman would be the number one or two pick.
I sent the anchor an email indicating McLemore was likely to not be drafted in the position he reported. His response was reports he received indicated his information was correct. McLemore was a lottery pick all right just not in the sport the anchor had reported; he became the number 7 pick by the Sacramento Kings. The point is we are all wrong at some point however this anchor having the same access to information I had refused to believe my email. I didn’t follow with an “I told you so” email; being correct proved my point.
His game grows before our very eyes
The game of Pacers forward Paul George grows day by day, I‘m unsure if anyone could have predicted stardom for him. He was the 10th pick in the 2010 NBA Draft from Fresno State. I found this quite interesting on his Wikipedia page, “despite his accomplishments, George was not considered a major prospect by colleges. Rivals.com labeled him as a three-star recruit and ranked him 20th among a class of California prospects that was highlighted by Jrue Holiday and DeMar DeRozan.”
If you remember a past comparison was made to the Wally Pipp story. For those unfamiliar with baseball history Pipp was the Yankees first baseman, one day in 1925 the Yankee manager gave him the day off. Pipp was replaced by Lou Gehrig and he played for the next 2,130 games. Pipp never found his way into the Yankee lineup again. I believe that might be the case for the Pacers Danny Granger as George has solidified his status with the Pacers.
Rivals is only one
A number of scouting websites identify prospective basketball talent. I don’t know if Rivals has been active longer but it is clearly the best for providing detailed information on a prospect. The early signing period saw many prospects confirm in writing their previous verbal commitment. In addition several made their commitment known by signing on the dotted line. Rivals Top 150 high school players for 2014 all but four remain uncommitted through Nov 22. Even more interesting three of the four have the same school on their radar. I couldn’t imagine the three all committing to Kentucky, could they?
Prospect Rivals number
Myles Turner 6-11 225 #6
Rashad Vaughn 6-5 200 #7
Jaquan Lyle 6-5 215 #22

NBA jerseys
At the time the Thunder came into existence I wrote about the terrible choice I thought the fans or management or whomever in choosing a jersey. For me it wasn’t color issue as much as the design, I still maintain the jersey reminds me of a high school team. That last statement is not fair on my part, a number of high school teams have outstanding jersey combos. Since the debut of the original jersey the Thunder has introduced an alternate jersey which looks far better. In fact I wish they would adopt it as their chief uniform. While discussing ugly jerseys I could include the power blue sleeved jerseys worn by the Clippers. Unlike the Thunder the power blue are alternate so they are not worn as often.
All Star voting
It’s been quite a number of years since I elected to vote an All Star ballot. I’ve held a multitude of reasons for my non-participation. This is a brief explanation of what I believe is wrong with fan vote. I love me some Kobe Bryant however there is no way he should be in second place among guards after but two games. How about Derrick Rose, he’s third in voting and when healthy no one doubts his All Star ability. Don’t you dare believe this is the first occurrence of this type? My memory says this has occurred previously I was unable to locate the player or date. Bottom line it’s okay for fans to have favorites however All Star voting is a different matter. Just my observation doesn’t make it correct, what do you think?
“Diamond in the rough”
I declare no ability to peer into the future; over the years I have seen a number of athletes whom I believe have all the tools. The tools are the ability to play at the highest level, the prospect is Joel Embiid. The Embiid story has been documented previously but his talent level continues to increase. Last Saturdays’ action provides us continued evidence; Andrew Wiggins only scored 11 points in the Kansas win over New Mexico. Forward Perry Ellis led the team in scoring with 21 points in the 80-63 victory. The rising star of this team is Joel Embiid the 7 foot center from Cameroon West Africa.
All Embiid did was score 18 points on 5 for 6 from the floor and 8 for 10 from the free-throw line. He blocked 4 shots and may have altered another 4 or 5 by his presence; he also had 3 steals and 6 rebounds. Embiid helped Kansas rebound from the poor play in recent weeks. Freshman Embiid needs to return for his sophomore year despite his skill improving game to game. The 2014 NBA mock drafts have followed his game as well. Draftexpress.com lists Embiid in the number four position while he’s the number three pick by NBADraft.net. I believe both sites had Embiid last summer but certainly not this lofty a draft pick.
Mizzou, a Top 25 team?
I’m pleased the Tigers have finally cracked the Top 25. Despite the national spotlight those who follow the program closely have apprehension. The Tigers have benefited with friendly scheduling, to date the only the high quality win is that over UCLA. Besides the schedule the other concern is frontcourt play. The teams’ success to date lies in the backcourt, frontcourt production (offensively and defensively) has been spotty at best. Losing key frontcourt players Coach Haith recruited replacements among them junior college prospect Keanu Post. We thought there would be a learning curve for the 6-11 265 pound Post and it‘s been evident.
We probably were not expecting scoring but we did anticipate rebounding and defense; so far we’ve been witness to little of both. Returning letterman 6-9 240 pound Tony Criswell’s play has also been up and down. Another returnee 6-10 252 pound Ryan Roseburg has rebounded the ball well but lacks scoring punch. Interesting the best frontcourt athlete to date has been freshman Jonathan Williams III 6-9 and a thin 208 pounds. The Tigers lose little with 6-11 242 pound Stefan Jankovic leaving the program. Although he shoot the ball well at times Jankovic always seemed more comfortable taking perimeter shots, he didn’t seem to like mixing it up inside.
He’s a winner
Dana Altman is one of those collegiate coaches that manage to fly beneath the radar. When discussing successful coaches folks usually toss out the same names, Calipari, Williams and coach K to name a few. Altman’s teams have never won a national championship wonder if that’s the basis so little is know about the man. We know he’s a winner, in 23 years of coaching his teams have only finished below .500 three times.
This includes stops at Marshall, Kansas State, Creighton and Oregon State, as for him losing its only occurred his first year at Kansas State and the first two years at Creighton. Overall Altman coached teams have won 20 or more games 15 times and have advanced to the NCAA Championship round. It’s noteworthy he’s been coach of the year in four conferences and in 2013 was honored with the Jim Phelan Award. This award is given to the most outstanding coach in men’s Division I basketball. *coaching history, Wikipedia

Who wins tomorrow night?
The match between Kansas and New Mexico should be a slam-dunk win for Kansas---right? It will be played at the Sprint Center in Kansas City (MO); less than 50 miles from the Lawrence campus of Kansas. The short distance guarantees a capacity crowd in the arena from the school and metro area voicing support for Kansas. The Jayhawks losers in 3 out of their last 4 games should emerge from the locker room breathing fire. They probably have had an exhausting practice after two losses in a row. The freshman laden Kansas team has not played to expectations of the experts and certainly demanding fans of the team. They have point guard issues (24 turnovers against Florida) and poor 3-point shooting. Andrew Wiggins is good as advertised however the game remains a team effort.
Turning to New Mexico briefly they have begun the season with 7 wins and only 1 loss, Alex Kirk their 7-foot center will provide the Lobos a slight rebound advantage. Who wins the game, you make the call. If we looked at the schedule in October I believe most of us would have declared Kansas the winner. Bill Self and staff have a task in front of them, they must figure out a process to continue the noteworthy past winning trend. Big XII conference play is but a few weeks away and they have a large task in front of them. Check this out, January 13th they play #17 Iowa State, January 18th #7 Oklahoma State and January 20th they play #14 Baylor. That’s a schedule filled with potential land mines unless Kansas manages to correct aspects of its game.
A reminder
On more than one occasion I’ve reminded you the silliness of the “Heat Index.” This is a column ESPN.com has run beginning with LeBron’s arrival in South Beach. A reporter assigns letter grades regarding the performance of the Heat. This is the problem as I see it LeBron, Wade, Bosh and one other Heat player are awarded grades. Win or lose the opposition team rather than individual members are given a grade. Instead of awarding Paul George a letter grade for his outstanding game the Pacer team receives an A. No doubt the Pacer team played superior in order to secure a 90-84 victory.
I hope he stays
Several weeks back I wrote of Joel Embiid, the Jayhawk 7-footer. I pointed out this native of Cameroon West Africa had only been playing basketball for a short period of time. I believe Coach Bill Self did a masterful recruiting job in luring him to Kansas. Embiid is upward bound on several of the 2014 mock draft sites. In fact Jeff Goodman of ESPN.com claims Embiid might have leapt to the top of the 2014 draft. The potential clearly shows however he’s still raw. It would really be beneficial if the youngster remained through his sophomore year, just my observation. His situation is far different from Marcus Smart or Dante Exum, on the other hand Embiid is tall and we know the premium placed on tall athletic big men by the NBA.
Flaws in his game
Televised games don’t provide a true picture of an athlete’s ability. With that statement out of the way I’ve had several opportunities to view Duke’s Jabari Parker. This 6-8 235 pound forward “rode to the rescue” allowing Duke to win a tight game against Vermont 91-90. All Parker did was score 26 points and shoot nearly 69% from the floor. In addition he grabbed 9 rebounds, had 1 blocked shot and 2 steals. So far this young season the only area requiring improvement is Parker’s free throw shooting. Currently Parker is shooting 68% from the line a number that could stand improvement however it’s certainly not horrible.
A late bloomer
The 76ers certainly are not an elite team; they do have several players who may be on the cusp of stardom. One of those is center Spencer Hawes; this 7-1 245 pound center was the 10th pick in the first round by the Kings. A 2010 trade to the 76ers has aided his growth as a NBA quality player. He is experiencing a break-out season in 2013-14, averaging 16.8 points per game and snatching down 10.3 rebounds. Unless a big man is just blessed with superior talent there is an adjustment or learning curve. Perhaps this

I still have nightmares about the game
The weekend triumph over UCLA avenged last year’s overtime loss; unfortunately it does little to erase memory of the floor length dash of UCLA’s Tyus Edney. Mizzou fans certainly can relate to the history and know what I’m talkin’ bout!
What did you expect?
Listening to many respondents regarding Kobe’s first game I was amazed. A footnote, 99% of the comments were from the TWC Sports Network so you see where I’m going. Even the most die hard Laker (and Kobe fans) must have realized “rust” would exist with Kobe’s game. As for me my expectations were quite low, 10-15 points a handful of rebounds and assists. This is what we got, 9 points, 8 rebounds 4 assists and 8 turnovers.
I wonder how many of those turnovers were caused by the player “expecting” Kobe to take the shot. After an 8 or 9 month layoff we probably received the best he could offer for now, should we expect similar numbers in the future? There will be an adjustment period before we witness the real Kobe. The “real” Kobe not be as explosive around the basket, he will not dunk the ball furiously as in the past but he will likely be better at age 35 than 85% of the NBA.
Okay I‘m going to play general manager
I was gonna leave the Omer Asik trade to the folks that run franchises. This was my intent until I read a comment from my “new” favorite Bill Simmons. Before I delve into Simmons I understand the Rockets desire to trade Asik to an Eastern Conference team. Limited offensive skills but Asik plays better than average defense, he might present problems for Dwight Howard. Simmons thinks the Blazers might be “interested in an upgrade taking Asik over Robin Lopez.” If I had the opportunity I would question Simmons if he believes Asik is a huge upgrade over Lopez. I seriously doubt if this trade would ever occur for two major grounds.
1. Portland is a Western Conference adversary of Houston
2. Is Asik enough of an upgrade to justify the Blazers acquiring him?
Bits n Pieces
Did you hear the story of the Laker fan and his cancelled wedding? The story goes he was scheduled to be married December 8; once he discovered Kobe would play his first game he cancelled the wedding. I don’t make this stuff up I only report it.
If I’m wrong I’m not going to “bury” the correction someplace where you can’t locate it. Last month I discussed the Peter Vescey report regarding the retirement of Laker Steve Nash. I wrote I had little confidence in stories written by him, well this time he might be correct. A Laker fan website is hinting Nash may be on the verge of retirement, I may be wrong about Vescey this time.
Allow me to re-state an earlier position, “the best college team in the State of Kansas is not located in Lawrence.” The best team is in Wichita, the Wichita State Shockers are number 12 in the AP Poll and number 8 in the USA Coaches Poll. As for the other team Kansas is number 13 in both polls.
Did you realize Louisville is the only school to claim an NAIA and NCAA Div I Championship? They won the NAIA Championship in 1948 as for the NCAA crown they won in 1980, 1986 and 2013. Wikipedia
Did the Kings just trade a 6-6 point guard and replace him with one 5-9 (5-10 in shoes)? I admit I haven’t seen enough of Isaiah Thomas to make a call on this move. His numbers over the course of his brief career look good and the guy has a 38 inch vertical. Once upon a time the team had a point guard of similar stature; old-timers will remember Nate “Tiny” Archibald.
“Must be the shoes”!
The above is the Mars Blackmon pronouncement in a number of Air Jordan television commercials. This is about the “other” shoe company and the value of endorsements. Sports financial analyst indicated the bottom line for Adidas would be severely impacted no Derrick Rose playing this season. Please don’t go hatin’ on Adidas they might have been thinking it but made no public statements to my knowledge regarding the Rose injury.
It should also be of note Rose had signed a new contract with the shoe company in 2012 and they certainly were anticipating his return to the court. While researching this story I came across an interesting fact I wanted to share. Nike sales in basketball shoes represent 92% of the shoe market. Adidas is 5.5% and other shoe manufactures are below that. Keep in mind Converse is no longer a competitor; it’s been a division of Nike for several years after the assets of the company was purchased.

Mizzou belongs in the Top 25
The game was termed an upset by ESPN and I guess it may have been. UCLA was ranked number 25 in the nation; Mizzou unranked going into the game managed the win at home 80-71. Mizzou has received votes over the past few weeks but not enough to vault them into the Top 25; the win over UCLA should do it. By the way did I inform you I no longer take Coaches polls in any sports seriously? No way in the world do head coaches have enough time on a week to week basis to evaluate teams? With two or three games a week to prepare for how do they find the time? Somebody stated its assistant coaches who are often assigned the task.
He's busy
Saturday afternoon Kevin Harlan provided play by play for the telecast of the Mizzou-UCLA basketball game. He boarded a flight in Columbia (MO) immediatley after the game and flew to Washington D.C. A little under 24-hours later he was the voice behind the microphone for the Chiefs-Redskins football game. Harlan must lead all broadcasters of all sports in airline miles traveled.
I’m not hatin’
This is only my view, I’m not hatin’ on Howard. Despite all the positives emanating from Houston last summer the Rockets now realize what we all knew all along. It was apparent to all (except Rockets management) Dwight Howard couldn’t mesh with Pau Gasol last season. With that said how could they possibly believe he and Omer Asik would work together? Both are centers, one must sacrifice portions of his game to fit. The Rockets are attempting to trade Asik.
Can he help?
Somebody, anybody please convince me Carmelo Anthony will save the Lakers! There is no doubt Anthony is one of the most talented athletes in the NBA today. My statement to date can he make the Lakers a better team? The evidence in front of me fails to provide any proof however I remain open to contrary beliefs. The problem issue Carmelo Anthony has always appeared to play for Carmelo Anthony, and conversation has always circulated he’s a “coach killer.”
Speaking of the Big Apple
It’s still early however the battle is yet to occur, the Knicks and Nets were to do battle on the court for the fans affection. So far the only battle has been to determine who avoids residing in last place. As we await the results of tonight’s Knicks-Nets match I can report neither team is there. Both teams owe a thanks of gratitude to the awful play of the Milwaukee Bucks.
Mid-Major, what’s that?
I read the headline again and questioned it once again, what’s the definition of a mid-major? We realize Kentucky spends more for its basketball program than Bradley however both are D-1 programs. Is it the amount of NBA talent produced that separates the schools? Hall of Fame player Scottie Pippen attended Central Arkansas, last years Rookie of the Year Damian Lillard from Weber State.
We could include Paul George, Fresno State and Gordon Hayward from Butler or Kenneth Faried of Morehead State. Marquette’s Dwayne Wade or Jimmy Butler could also be included in the count. No one will ever mistake Derek Fisher for an All-Pro but his bulldog determination led him from Arkansas-Little Rock to a long NBA career. Next time you hear the term “mid-major” consider the school can play basketball with anyone. Want further proof how about the run of Wichita State in last years NCAA tourney.
Bits n Pieces
I’m reminded again of a statement I made, in the internet/twitter/social network age it’s my belief no athlete is “undiscovered.” I just read a prospect website containing a list of middle school players. Will all these middle school athletes succeed at the NBA level? At this point it’s undetermined if they can even play in high school and certainly collegiate play is out of the question for now at least.
Many of these future prospects have been identified already as 7th or 8th grade students. I discovered Ronnie Suggs Mizzou 2015 commit will actually graduate high school in 2014. The 6-6 175 pound shooting guard says; “I’m headed to prep school to bulk up my body.” He might be a little thin for his height but there is probably more to the tale. The backcourt will be crowded next season and by the time he arrives in 2015 it should be less crowded.
Store the name Georgios Papagiannis or simply George in your memory banks.
16-year old 7-1 250 pound center from Maroussi, Athens, Greece just entered his junior year at Westtown School. Westtown is a private prep school located in West Chester (PA). Don’t worry if you are unfamiliar with George few folks except those in Australia were familiar with Dante Exum before this past spring and summer.

“The ship be sinking”
The grammar of course is incorrect, the above phrase was uttered by long-ago Knick Michael Ray Richardson back in the ‘80‘s. He made the statement at the time the Knicks were going through a rough stretch of play. We could fast-forward to 2013 and apply it to the other New York team----the Nets. Injuries have contributed to poor play recently but Lawrence Frank. Most of us probably believed there would be a learning curve for Jason Kidd to cease playing one week and coaching the next. He (or the front office) hired veteran coaches including Frank. I believed there might be an adjustment required because Kidd had once been Frank’s point guard. The Nets announced Frank has been re-assigned other duties; in addition he will no longer attend team practice. We can read between the lines, was there a conflict between the coach and Frank?
UMass basketball
Did you know Julius Erving, i.e. Dr. J. played his college ball at UMass? Basketball fans can cite chapter and verse of his Hall of Fame career few are familiar with the school he attended. There may be a reason; the Amherst campus has probably distinguished itself more for academics than basketball. From 1988 through 1996 under John Calipari the basketball team was quite competitive. After Calipari left the program competed but flew beneath the radar of most. Coach Derek Kellogg arrived on the scene in 2008 and has slowly re-built the program. UMass had a losing record in his first two seasons but has won 20+ games the last two seasons. The Minutemen are 7-0 and ranked number 21, the first appearance in the Top 25 since 1998.
"What in the wide world of sports is a goin on here?"
Movie fans will recognize the line uttered by Taggert the Slim Pickins bad guy in the 1974 movie Blazing Saddles. We could make the same declaration, have you checked the Eastern Conference standings lately? As this is published the Pacers and the Heat are the only two teams above .500. Injuries have really impacted several of the teams including the Knicks and Nets. As for the Celtics, 76ers and Cavs they are young teams struggling to learn how to win.
Only one
The tallest skilled guard anyone had witnessed in the NBA up to 1979 was 6-5 Oscar Robertson. The term combo guard is used frequently in today’s vernacular; Robertson was probably the first although he was identified as a point guard. If we just look at Robertson’s shot total we might have the impression Robertson was more a shooter than a distributor of the ball. In his second NBA season (1961-1962) Robertson averaged 30.8 ppg, 11.4 assists and 12.5 rebounds a game. In 1977 Michigan State recruited a taller lanky 6-9 215 pound guard from Lansing (MI) named Ervin Johnson nicknamed Magic. We could state he was almost the polar opposite of Robertson; more a distributor of the basketball than shooter.
Magic was never blessed with terrific foot speed or a great defender, he made up in other areas of the game by working hard. He wasn’t a good shooter when he arrived in the NBA yet ended his career with a .520 percentage. He raised his 3-point shooting from a low of .226 to a high of .384 which led the NBA in the 1989-1990 season. It’s my belief if Johnson had not contracted the HIV virus he might have retired the all-time NBA assist leader. Magic averaged 11.2 assists per game over the course of his 13 year NBA career, his playoff average a whooping 12.3 assists per game. Almost single-handily “Magic” Johnson was directly responsible for “Showtime” era basketball in Los Angeles.
You can’t receive what you want
Conference versus conference play has been in effect during the early season. One of those is the Big XII versus SEC; Mizzou played West Virginia last night. Oh how I wish Kansas had been forced to play Mizzou, you remember Bill Self had stated “he’d never play Mizzou again.” The basis for his statement occurred at the time Mizzou left the Big XII for the SEC.

This is my last report----until!
I have a number of unpublished features regarding prospect Dante Exum. You remember Exum, he’s the 6-6 190 pound point guard from Australia. His high school class graduated in the fall of 2013, circumstances allows him eligible for the 2014 NBA Draft. At the same time he been mulling over scholarship offers from a number of schools in the U.S. It should be of note none of the recruiting websites have him listed however every NBA mock draft site does. My reasoning for no future stories only extends to February 2014. Sometime during the month this youngster will make his decision known, either college or the NBA Draft for him. Exum is projected as the 5th pick, below is the sum he would receive in each of his first three NBA seasons. If he’s a higher or lower choice the monetary amount would be affected significantly.
Year 1 Year 2 Year 3
$2,812,200 $2,938,700 $3,065,300
Naturally any shoe deal or ad revenue from other products endorsed is extra dollars in his pocket. I’ve been wrong before so allow me out on the precarious tree branch. I say Exum declares for the June Draft. College is always there, he could take the route of Vince Carter and Shaquille O’ Neal who played but managed to graduate while continuing their NBA careers.

Clue me in please
I'm watching ESPN’s First Take the post-Thanksgiving telecast. I believe all of us realize Stephan A. Smith and Skip Bayless are supposed to “stoke the fire” on issues in the sports world, it’s my belief they struck out on this one. They were discussing "Sodagate,” the Jason Kidd soda spilled on the court during the recent Nets-Lakers game. The soda was spilled during a crucial point near the end of the game; the Nets had no timeouts left. Cleaning up the court allowed Nets assistant coaches to draw up a end of the game play. The shot was missed by Pierce and the Nets lost the game. I don’t remember any discussion on whether they thought Kidd did it on purpose I do remember they thought the $50, 0000 fine levied by the NBA on Kidd was far too substantial. They gave us their take now here is mine. For unknown reasons the NBA unlike other professional leagues has operated under a cloud of suspension.
You’ve heard the stories, the draft lottery is “fixed”, how could the Cavs receive two number one picks in the space of three years? I almost forgot the Patrick Ewing bent card draft. Patrick Ewing was in the 1985 draft and the Knicks would be guaranteed the pick. We could include the Tim Donaghy referee gambling scandal, I’m sure there are others I’ve missed. Stephan A. “believed this was the Stern action as he leaves office in February.” I certainly have not been in agreement with the commissioner on several of his decisions notably his veto of the Chris Paul to the Laker trade. This I believe, how can a league appear competent when it fails to police the actions of rule breakers? For a couple of media types who appear to operate by the letter of the law the stance taken by both was interesting. What do you think was the Kidd fine justified by the NBA?
He said it and I agree
Most of the talk about tanking or losing on purpose began during the summer. It’s progressed into the fall with an unidentified NBA general manger claiming he thought a team might entertain the idea. Of course the basis is the potential of a rich 2014 NBA draft and the opportunity at a franchise player. That type of conversation is just that, we have no idea if Andrew Wiggins or Marcus Smart will become All-Pro. Michael Jordan was asked the question regarding his Bobcats. I’ve stated all along I couldn’t be a fan of any team I thought might be losing on purpose. It turns out MJ agrees with me, I say it’s good because you read my opinion and you may agree with it or maybe you don’t. You could do the same with MJ’s view however regardless of his success as an owner he’s got creditability.
Officials don’t cause your team to lose
This is written a day after the Broncos beat up my Chiefs. I noticed a number of Chiefs fans were making derogatory comments regarding the officiating. I was on the road traveling from Dallas so I only had a radio picture of the game. Officials miss calls all the time especially in my sport, basketball (and football) are played at a pace which probably causes officiating errors time to time. If your favorite team loses it’s not due to the officials it’s due to elements of your teams’ game breaking down.

How did this occur?
I don't have an answer, I'm only providing the news. UCLA and Mizzou were invited to play in the Las Vegas Invitational. I'm unsure which came first the teams setting up their
non-conference games or the tournament invitation. In any event both teams won their scheduled games but neither was crowned champion due to their schedules. UCLA and Mizzou are scheduled to play each other in two weeks, "they" decided the teams should not meet in the tourney. Got it so far, hope I haven't confused you with this explanation. Instead of a championship game "they":decided the teams would be co-champs? I have no idea the makeup of the mysterious "they"!
Bits n pieces
I’m convinced I could coach successfully against a Mike Anderson team. After witnessing his Arkansas Razorbacks lose to Cal I believe I have insight into Anderson’s playbook. Arrogant on my part, maybe but I had plenty of opportunity viewing his Mizzou teams from 2006-2011.
It’s still early however I must admit my Eastern Conference prediction might be on “life support” already. If you remember I stated I believed one of three teams would supplant the Heat as conference champs. Let’s see how I’m doing, the Bulls Derrick Rose is gone for the season--check one. Currently the Brooklyn Nets battling injuries reside in last place in the Atlantic Division--check two. The Pacers have slowed a bit since the beginning of the season but now remain my only hope.
A couple of notes of interest, the Houston Rockets are leading the NBA in scoring at 109.9 points per game; they are surrendering 105.6 points per game. Los Angeles Clippers scoring is 107.9 points per game; they yield 103.3 points per game.
I’m unsure of your view but I cannot remember a period when there were so many outstanding underclassmen athletes. We might assemble a team of freshman and sophomores and they could probably easily defeat a team comprised of upperclassmen.
I’m curious
Thon Maker’s story is worth a reminder to some and an introduction to others, Maker is 7 feet tall. This international student and basketball player was born in Sudan but immigrated to Australia. From that nation he made his way to U.S. to attend Carlisle School in Martinsville (VA). Maker is rated the number one prospect in the Class of 2016. Maker began playing basketball in 2010 however reports indicate his game continues to improve. There is little concern about his rail thin (210 pound) body. Coaches will work on his conditioning and diet over the next few years. The point of curiosity relates to his NBA draft status. Unlike Dante Exum (who’s also from Australia) I’m wondering if Maker s attendance in the U.S. changes his status. As an International player I wonder if he’s eligible for the draft immediately. I’m going to research the question and get back to you.
Basketball without Borders
I held a discussion with an acquaintance recently. He asked me about the emerging talent from the African continent. I informed he I believed it was due to the Basketball without Borders tutelage in the continent. I decided to research the question my friend raised; Basketball without Borders not only operates on the African continent but the Americas, Europe and Asia as well. *“ Basketball without Borders (BWB) is the NBA and FIBA’s global basketball development and community outreach program that unites young basketball players to promote the sport and encourage positive social change in the areas of education, health, and wellness. The top youth players 19 and under from Asia, Europe, Latin America and Africa, as selected by the NBA, FIBA and participating federations, will train under NBA players and coaches and compete against their peers. NBA players will partner with local community groups to lead daily life-skills sessions focusing on the importance of education, leadership, character development, health and wellness. To promote friendship and diversity, the campers are divided into teams without regard to race and nationality.” *NBA.com
He’s selfish
We have heard the criticism of Kobe Bryant over the last several days. This time it’s the last player contract he recently signed. I say player because I believe the Lakers will hire him in some capacity once he’s retired. The critics state; “why is he signing this contract, doesn’t he realize if he took less money it would allow them to maximize the teams free agent chase? “ My first question, your boss offers you a raise and you say, “no thanks you’re paying me enough.” Maybe you know someone I certainly don’t know anyone refusing a pay raise.
A secondary consideration the Lakers offered him this contract he could have demanded more money, Kobe made no demands. He didn’t hold the Lakers hostage he accepted the teams offer. As for that LeBron/Carmelo talk I don’t believe either was headed to Los Angeles anyway. According to the experts the Lakers have room to sign one max player, I have no idea who that is but the money is available. Lastly will Kobe win ring number six, I have no idea? This I know Kobe will finish his playing days as a member of one team.
