Clippers are a “new” team
There are more players headed to the Clippers than I reported yesterday.  In addition to those already mentioned add the names of Montrezl Harrell, Darrun Hillard, DeAndre Liggins and Kyle Wiltjer plus a 2018 first round draft choice and cash considerations.  All those players for Chris Paul, this trade must be salary balanced in order to be consummated so part of it has not been finalized.  The B portion of the story may or may not be true?

If you’ve read Words any length of time you know I’m no Doc Rivers fan I‘ve believed for a number of years he‘s a good coach but not a great one.  I’m reporting this story I didn’t originate it, was there a Carmelo Anthony trade vetoed due to Austin Rivers?  It’s being reported prior to Jerry West there was a proposed trade with the Knicks involving Carmelo Anthony and Austin Rivers.  Carmelo would be traded to the Clippers along with a number of Knicks the Clippers would send Austin Rivers and others to NYC.  Doc Rivers had a deadline to respond and allowed the time to expire.

Were there other considerations besides the coaches’ son being included in the trade?  There may have been this we don’t know.  There comes a point in the life of every parent you need to let go, allow them to fly on their own.  Doc Rivers is not ready to allow his son the freedom he probably desires.  Austin Rivers will turn 25 in August; potentially he’s got a long-career in front of him as an NBA reserve or in Europe.  Locker room drama existed in Clipperland and we didn‘t know it.

Territorial pick
Thanks Chris for suggesting this history is detailed.    Wilt Chamberlain played his collegiate basketball at the University of Kansas.  He would be drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors and it had nothing to do with the teams draft position.  Kansas University is some 1,165 road miles from Philadelphia Wilt’s hometown; he arrived on the national scene from Overbrook High School in the city.  Back in the day the BAA/NBA did not have the world-wide footprint it does today.  The NBA was a minor league by comparison to the NFL and Major League Baseball.  A number of NBA franchises were represented in smaller cities across the nation unlike existing in football and baseball.

Strange as it might seem today in the ‘40’s and ‘50’s college basketball had more clout than the fledgling NBA.  Truth is in those days the Harlem Globetrotters would often be included as double-header.  NBA teams desiring to attract fans instituted a policy of “local” picks in the draft.  The territorial pick was eliminated in 1966 once the draft was restructured.  Many names might be unfamiliar unless you are a student of the game; there is no intention to detail the complete list just note a small number besides Chamberlain who is enshrined in the Hall of Fame.  Oscar Robertson, Bill Bradley and Gail Goodrich were all territorial picks in the NBA Draft.

Defensive play of the year
No argument from me with Draymond Green being named 2017 Defensive Player of the Year.  He’s on the “small” side for an NBA power forward 6-7 and 230 pounds however he backs down from nobody, this attitude often places him in jeopardy with game officials.  Green is annually near the top in technical fouls but that’s only part of his story.

As reported earlier he was considered a late first round draft choice, he slid down to the second round and became the 35th pick.  Maybe the selection position has much to do with his attitude guarding opposing players.  Steph is valuable so is Durant and several other Warrior players; I continue to believe Green and his tough hard-nose defense are keys to championship basketball in the Bay Area. In addition Green needs to check with a stylist, those shorts or Capri pants were not a good look.

Retired numbers
A number of Laker fans are upset several due to the team drafting Lonzo Ball.  The others are upset because the team issued number 2 to Ball.  Longtime Laker fans realize Derek Fisher wore number 2 on separate occasions a total of 13 years for the team.  One fan wrote “He’s (Fisher) not in the Hall of Fame so there should be no problem with issuing jersey 2.“  Another said; “Fisher was a key part of 5 Laker championships” while another said; “The Lakers never retired his number so why not.”  What do you think about this matter, is it that important or is it much ado about nothing?

Part Deux
Despite his tenure with the Knicks Phil Jackson’s legacy is sealed.  11 times the former Bulls and Lakers coach won championships; only the late Red Auerbach of the Celtics can be part of the conversation.  Although PJ had no front-office experience in 2014 when he was hired I believed in his ability to lead.  This is written prior to the press conference so I could be off-base but these are points I see.  Maybe the job of re-tooling the Knicks was too difficult for him to handle.  I find it difficult to believe PJ didn’t devote enough time to the job.  Finally the insistence by PJ Knick coaches run the Triangle Offense.

We heard from "yelling" Stephen A. Smith regarding the Jackson firing.  Naturally Smith is pleased with the move however I’ve got a question for him.  Does he believe potential free agents will be headed to the Knicks in droves now that Jackson is no longer there?  The Knicks have the same problem Smith claims the Lakers have; bad teams don’t attract quality free agents.  While Smith is dancing in the streets he seems to have forgotten James Dolan remains the owner.   Until we witness a true turn around in performance NYC will remain the home of the Giants, Yankees, Mets and tourism.

Another blockbuster move
It’s not July yet the opening date of free-agency frenzy, the first big move didn’t come through free-agency but rather a trade.  (Don’t count Phil Jackson because it was no player movement). Chris Paul to the Rockets for Patrick Beverly, Lou Williams, Sam Dekker and a draft choice. The trade is not finalized yet but all indications point to the fact it’s a done deal.

Once the season begins the Rockets will have Paul at the point and James Harden will return to the shooting guard.  Patrick Beverly is a better defender than Paul but certainly lacks the skill of Paul in running an offense.  Was this the first move, what about free-agents Blake Griffin and J.J. Redick, how about center DeAndre Jordan.  The NBA season will be interesting in Clipperland and Houston.

There are times
Do you remember the first time you witnessed LeBron James in a high school game.  In an earlier time it might have been a young Kobe Bryant or Kevin Garnett, they demonstrated their games were superior to their high school competition.  That’s me and Zion Williamson the soon to be 17 year old. ESPN awards him 5-stars and list him the number two prospect in 2018. Rivals give him 5-stars and they also rate him at two.

Williamson is a 6-7 230 pound forward, his height says small forward however 230 pounds says power forward how about a forward for now.  Williamson from Spartanburg (SC) has offers from a number of programs across the country far too many to count.  Williamson’s game is one of power dunks from video I’ve witnessed they detail very little outside game.  I’m not saying he doesn’t have an outside game in his repertoire it seems power dunks make better video.

Why?
I wonder at times why people are so negative; to prove their point they offer an unconnected occurrence for their belief.  Here I go again; I have no idea if Magic Johnson can turn the Lakers around.  My first word is give him a chance if he fails as Jim Buss did then fire his @##***.  A writer claimed he couldn’t believe Magic could return the team to its previous glory.  He used two examples of failure as a basis for his anti-Magic discussion.  The writer pointed to Magic’s tenure as Laker coach and the time period he served as a television analyst.

Guess what fans neither of those examples of “failure” have any connection to building a basketball team.  If we travel back to 1994 Magic took over the Lakers replacing Randy Pfund and Bill Bertka. I’m unsure if there was ever any attempt by him to remain in place as head coach.  As for the analyst position he just many have not been cut out for that role.  This former player might know the ABC’s of running a team but not have the ability to communicate that fact to a television audience.

WOW!!!!!
I'm waiting on confirmation of this breaking overnight story.  Ramona Shelburne of ESPN is reporting the Knicks and President Phil Jackson will part ways today.  We can speculate all day long however if this story is confirmed it is understandable.  In addition to the Knicks poor won-loss record there is the player issue.  First it was Carmelo Anthony and after the 2017 was complete it was Kristaps Porzingis.  Jackson had a sterling record as an NBA coach but 0 experience in charge of a team.  It’s interesting I’ve read or heard little from the Knicks chief celebrity fan Spike Lee.  Actor Michael Rapaport has been critical for several years about Phil Jackson.

Rookie of the Year
2017 will forever be remembered Mr. Irrelevant becoming ROY.  Don’t begin tossing rocks in my direction Malcolm Brogdon might wind up with a stellar NBA career but consider this fact. Without checking numbers Brogdon’s 10.2 ppg average might be the lowest figure ever registered by a ROY.  This is certainly not intended to slight Brogdon’s future in the NBA its more the fact he had limited competition in winning the award.  Someone might ask the question is that all there is?

The discussion occurring might not exist if not for injuries affecting two of the candidates vying for ROY, Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid of the Sixers.  Prior to the start of the 2016-17 everyone expected Ben Simmons to be named ROY; we know what occurred with that.  Joel Embiid could have been the honoree if only he played more than 31 games.  His 20.2 ppg and nearly 8 rebounds a game were close to outstanding if only he hadn’t played so few games. The injury bug bit Embiid once again, we begin to question can he play a complete season without being sidelined?

Bits n Pieces
You tellin’ me Austin Rivers and Meyers Leonard were drafted ahead of Draymond Green? How about Royce White from Iowa State, he was the number 16 pick in the first round and he’s no longer in the NBA.  Its true Rivers was a number 10 pick by the Hornets in the first round and Leonard number 11 by the Blazers.  Green chosen in the 2nd round with the 35th pick has been part of the glue that holds the Warriors together.

A children’s television program tilted “Where in the World Is Carmen San Diego’” aired from 1991 through 1996.  The program centered on junior detectives who were challenged to answer questions regarding geography.  Perhaps we could use the detectives’ geography skills again.  Where in the world is Zhou Qi is the question, you remember Qi don’t you?  He was drafted by the Rockets in the 2016 NBA Draft and then disappeared.  The 7-2 Qi didn’t actually disappear he chose to remain in China playing for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers, according to reports he’s in Houston hoping to play for the Rockets in the 2017-18 season.

Unlike a number of Mizzou fans I ain’t beggin’ any more to play Kansas in basketball.  I was discussing the prospects for Mizzou’s 2017-18 season and a friend said; “I miss the days of Kansas and Missouri basketball.”  I made no comment because that’s no longer my desire for the two to meet on the court.  A few years ago we found Wichita State facing Kansas in the NCAA Tournament, should a similar scenario prevail have no issue with Mizzou and Kansas facing one another.  I have absolutely no desire to play Kansas unless they reach out to Mizzou first.

The trade of Zach LaVine and Kris Dunn to the Bulls is strange based on a number of issues. Both players were considered candidates to replace Rubio in the Wolves lineup.  Once the trade was announced my thought this was assurance Rubio had a sealed the deal on his future. Rubio can’t shoot worth a darn however there is no question about his ability to distribute the basketball and run an offense.  Reports are the Wolves are still attempting to trade Rubio.

I don’t hate him
I’m really unsure when I wrote the uncomplimentary piece on Dan LeBatard of ESPN.  Frank came back and said he liked LeBatard; this is me defending my original statement.  Someone from the network placed a microphone in front of his face questioning Dwight Howard being traded to Charlotte.  LeBatard straight face and all indicted the trade was the result of the “Kobe effect” or similar words.  Howard played the 2012-13 season with the Lakers, there is no argument on my part all indications point to the fact the two did not get along.

Free agent Howard departed for the Rockets after the season where he remained for three seasons.  He left the Rockets signing a three-year contract with his hometown Hawks.  After but one season the Hawks traded him to the Hornets.  My math skills are not great but let me see if I can undertake a count.  Three years with the Rockets one year with the Hawks that’s four years.  If we toss in the year since Kobe retired our grand total becomes five years.  Come on LeBatard you trying to convince us after five years Kobe is still casting a shadow over Dwight Howard.  Did Kobe use some sort of Jedi mind trick on Dwight Howard?

MVP, MVP, MVP
Fans have been yelling MVP in arenas throughout the NBA for generations, last night it became official.  Thunder point guard was named 2017 NBA MVP.  Early on this writer chose "The Beard" MVP but he fell short.  My wife asked me prior to the announcement who I thought would win.  I thought, hesitated and then said to her; "I think Russell Westbrook."  Westbrook tied Oscar Robertson's Triple-Double record which just may have sealed the deal.

I’m unsure
Who do we credit for this bit of basketball wisdom, I believe it should be attributed to Jay Bilas of ESPN.  Late night draft the name Kobi Simmons became part of the discussion.  This one centered on the possibility the Arizona Wildcat might not be Bilas went on to state; “NBA teams do a good job talking to players, they inform them whether they believe they are ready for the rigors of the NBA.”

Sure enough despite the apparent talent of freshmen Simmons he was not drafted.  Simmons cannot return to Arizona because his name remained in the pool long past the date he could have withdrawn his name and returned to Arizona.  Late word on Sunday night indicated Simmons will sign a free-agent contract with the Grizzlies.  Here’s hoping he makes the Grizzlies roster however there is no guarantee.

Animal House
The Cavs are not quite as bad as the 1978 movie classic Animal House but really close.  I don’t believe we’ve witnessed a team two years removed from a championship this dysfunctional.  On second thought the 2004 Lakers of Shaquille O‘Neal, Kobe Bryant, Karl Malone and Gary Payton might be close.   No way in the world that Laker team with four future Hall of Fame players should lose a championship but they did.  The Bulls Jimmy Butler has been told “You don’t want to play for the Cavs” this comment by a present Cavs player.  Management states former GM David Griffin was not fired his contract wasn’t renewed.

Further stories floating about indicating LeBron is out after 2018 be it the Clippers or Lakers. Chauncey Billups had a second interview for the GM position but has made no comment on whether he takes the job.  All this chaos going on while owner Dan Gilbert sits back pondering the confusion he‘s created or maybe he doesn‘t.  As this was being finalized came word of a possible 3-way trade where the Cavs would trade Kevin Love and acquire Paul George.  On second thought maybe Quicken Loans Arena has become the 2017 version of Animal House.

Class of 2018
We mentioned Torrence Watson earlier, who else is on Mizzou’s radar you ask?  The list of prospects is not extensive due to the present and incoming number of players.  In addition Mizzou possibly losing the Porter brothers or Tilmon is also a possibility.

Brandon Johns 6-7 forward East Lansing (MI)
Marcus Bingham 6-9 forward Grand Rapids (MI)
Alex Lomax 5-11 point guard Memphis
K J Hymes 6-9 forward Phoenix (AZ)
Jordan Lathon 6-4 point guard Grandview (MO)
Christian Bishop 6-7 forward Lees Summit (MO)

Great Expectations
This has nothing to do with the 1861 Charles Dickens novel however it does involve Sixer fans and their view of the 2017-18 season.  Center Joel Embiid, small forward Ben Simmons who missed last and rookie Markelle Fultz provides you a glimpse as to why Sixer fans are so excited.  How excited you ask well the team has sold 14,000 season tickets which guarantee every Sixer home game in the upcoming season will be sold out.  If we look toward the future of the NBA Eastern Conference we can see the Cavs trending downward while the Sixers are trending upward.

Leftovers
My wife gives me the blues generally I don’t like to eat leftovers.  If I eat a meal one evening by the second serving I’m looking for something other than the previous night’s meal to eat.  This is NBA Draft leftovers; hopefully you will find them appetizing, there are just a few to consume. How about this one number one pick Markelle Fultz was on his junior varsity high school team when a sophomore, he wasn’t good enough to make the varsity.  Consider he’s the NBA’s number one draft choice in 2017. ESPN, CBS Sports, NBA TV and other media members please quit interviewing LaVar Ball. It’s Lonzo who is the real story and whether he can play at the NBA level.

I refuse to hear from LaVar should his son have adjustment issues.  Did you notice Stephen A. Smith was guarded in his commentary on the Knicks choice of point guard Frank Ntilikina Ntilikina from France?  Smith remembers 2011 and the screaming tirade he underwent after the Knicks drafted Porzingis.  This draft like any must stand the test of time; it appears very deep in talent. Most teams acquired the players they wanted in this draft.  Jimmy Butler arrived via a trade however I believe Wolves fans should be real excited for the future of this franchise.

I’m reading nothing in this news
After Kevin Durant decided to leave the Thunder I've concluded there is no method to determine the destination of a free-agent.  It was always belived the home team had the upper hand but not in all instances.  I’m not drawing any conclusions just reporting the news.  Clipper forward Blake Griffin and guard Chris Paul intend to opt out of their contracts and will test free agency. Both will become unrestricted free-agents July 1 and we shall see how this plays out. Prior to 2010 I would have said no way would LeBron James leave Cleveland.  Last year I thought the same story would prevail with Kevin Durant he wouldn’t leave the Thunder.

I love debate
Okay if you prefer basketball arguments because often that’s what they become.  You’ve participated or heard discussions of this type.  Are the Cavs better than the Warriors or vice-versa I love them, same for Steph versus Westbrook or Paul who is the better point guard. Those arguments match teams and players of the same era, those are valid.

Is Michael better than LeBron or how do the 1991 Bulls championship team stack up against the 2012 Heat champion?  For me those are ludicrous discussions no method of proving which player or team is superior.  I remember once hearing of a computer program that matched teams of different eras against one another.  I don’t really remember the outcome but once again in my opinion it proved nothing.

Summer activity
The NBA Awards are tonight and for the first time ever we have no idea which player will be named MVP.  There will be other awards as well, the telecast will be on TNT at 8:00 p.m. Central Time. Up next on the calendar is NBA free-agency which begins July 1, players can begin the process of deciding if they wish to change teams.  Next up Summer League play begins.  The rosters will be finalized later however the first three weeks of July will be full of basketball. Games will be available on NBA TV if you wish to check out your favorite team on an individual player.

Summer League games will be played in Orlando from July 1-6, the Utah portion July 3-6. The close out portion will be held in Las Vegas and will run from July 7-17.  As the calendar changes to August many AAU teams will gather in Las Vegas for play.  In early September the enshrinement ceremony will be held for the Class of 2017 inductees at the Naismith Hall of Fame, it will be telecast on NBA TV. Despite what you might believe there is much summer basketball activity from July through September.

The draft

Maybe I’ve watched too many of these over the years or I study too many mock draft sites all the year long.  The 2017 NBA Draft was pretty much uneventful to me.  Markelle Fultz to the Celtics, Lonzo Ball to the Lakers.  I was somewhat surprised Josh Jackson slipped to the Suns; I thought the Celtics would take him.  Side note I muted my television at the time they placed a microphone in front of LaVar Ball, I didn't want to hear anything he had to say.  John Calipari and Kentucky were in the house.

There were several trades but no blockbusters although some might place the Jimmy Butler trade in that category.  Porzingis (see below), Carmelo Anthony or Paul George might occur at a later date or not at all.  Although ESPN telecast the game NBA TV had crew there with analysis at the same time. This was a "young" draft with a record number of freshman being drafted.  I kept switching channels to gain information from both networks. The draft is long (nearly 5 1/2 hours) but much better in my view than the NFL Draft which occurs over two or three days whatever it is.
Ego driven
Will Kristap Porzingis have another address other than MSG by the time you read this?  Travel back in time with me to the middle of April each roster member had an exit interview scheduled with Phil Jackson.  Porzingis failed to explain why he skipped him meeting with PJ; he remained in NYC awhile and then headed home to Latvia for the summer.

Prior to leaving Porzingis did state he wants to remain a Knick.  The day of the draft and reports are PJ wishes to trade Porzingis and Carmelo Anthony.  Seriously folks PJ ain’t that dumb he’s not going to trade both players.  There is a further issue and its spelled E-G-O; PJ might believe Porzingis was insubordinate by his refusal to schedule an exit meeting.

Walt “Clyde” Frazier
Frazier last slipped on a number 10 Knick jersey in 1977, since that time he’s been the best point guard the Knicks have ever had.  I know what you are thinking Earl “The Pearl” Monroe also played alongside Clyde.  Pearl might have been the precursor to the combo guards of today he was a shooter first.  For those who didn’t have the opportunity to see Clyde in action he could shoot too its just he was a point guard first.  Derrick Rose at the point is a shadow of his former self besides the fact he is really a combo guard.

Mark Jackson (1987-92) might be the second best point guard to ever play for the Knicks. Late in his career Jason Kidd played for the Knicks but it was only one season.  Stephon Marbury was also a combo guard who played for them 5 years.  Where am I going with this account you ask? I’m glad you ask the Knicks will draft a point guard; I’m unsure if the choice is Frank Ntlikina from France or North Carolina State’s Dennis Smith.  Phil Jackson or whoever is in charge of the draft might fool me but why, you can always use depth however the Knicks front court appears solid. Because this was written prior to the draft we’ll find out later tonight. NOTE: The Knicks drafted Frank Ntlikina.  .

Bits n Pieces
Are you really sure you want the job might be the question?  Former NBA player and current ESPN analyst Chauncey Billups wants another job.  It was reported earlier he was candidate to become a GM.  On Monday Cavs GM David Griffin was asked to leave after three years on the job. Naturally Billups name was the first to come up.  Starting with Wayne Embry back in the day successive GM’s have served shorter periods of time, the Dan Gilbert factor in full effect.

Did you catch the Jerry West press conference the other day?  I didn’t see it in its entirety but there was Mr. Logo sitting next to Coach Doc Rivers discussing his basketball philosophy.  I have the greatest respect for West, if he operates in the role of consultant exaclty what does that entail?  Is there anyone in the Clipper front office willing to listen, several in the media claim Jerry West is in place to lure LeBron James or some other high profile free agent.

I informed you weeks ago I was no Paul George fan didn’t want him on my Lakers.  A rumor has been circulating for awhile LeBron will leave Cleveland once again next year when he becomes a free agent.  He and Dan Gilbert are not buddies however what purpose would this move serve?  The talent difference between a Paul George and LeBron James is light years however please retire in Cleveland.  It serves no purpose for you to move from team to team to team.

“You can find talent under a rock” if necessary well not quite but allow a further explanation.  I was viewing NBA TV recently and David Aldridge mentioned a potential NBA player.  Aldridge said; “He’s from St. Louis, guys from St. Louis know how to play.”  Much as I hate to admit it the best high school basketball remains on the eastern side of the State of Missouri.  That’s not to say Kansas City Metro doesn’t produce talent but nothing like that of St. Louis.  An evolving story which will be developed in the future.  .

Trades and rumors of trades
Technically not a trade however The Celtics and Sixers might have kicked off the trade flurry in the NBA swapping draft positions.  The Lakers then send Mozgov and Russell to the Nets for Brook Lopez and the 27th pick.  After but a year in his hometown Dwight Howard was traded from Atlanta to Charlotte.  The Hornets become Howard’s 5th NBA team which is quite interesting.

Then the rumors begin, Paul George, Carmelo Anthony and Kristap Porzingis all reported on the move somewhere.  Once upon a time MLB teams were most active trading players.  Overall it’s my belief few NFL players are moved through trades as for the NBA that’s another story. The NBA draft plus free-agency along with the possibility of trades is witness to numbers of players moving.  At the conclusion of NBA GameTime on NBA TV former player and analyst Dennis Scott ask host Casey Stern; “We are not getting traded are we?”

Location, location and location
We’ve heard this statement or something similar for years.  Simply stated sometimes where you are located in life or area can prove more beneficial than another place.  I’m unsure if this scenario applies to this account however you become the decider.  Bol Bol was attending high school in the KC Metro as mentioned in several other accounts.

Those of us who believe we know basketball were aware of Bol if nothing else for his late dad Manute who had an NBA career.  The question becomes did the rest of the country know the name Bol Bol?  I cannot answer the question but pose a question since he moved to So Cal did his game simply mature or was it the location?  We cannot answer the question however the
7-1 225 pound forward has become a Rivals and ESPN 5-star prospect.

The Valley
Bet you didn’t realize the Missouri Valley Conference or The Valley is the second oldest conference in the nation.  Founded in 1907 only the Big 10 Conference has a longer sports history. It might be surprising former members include Kansas State College (University), Mizzou and Kansas to name a few.  Although schools have left the conference The Valley has remained a Midwest based conference.  Only one school Drake University in Des Moines (IA) traces its roots to 1907 the founding date of the conference.

The conference has a rich basketball tradition with several outstanding teams at play over the years.  The conference also produced its share of outstanding players; in the Hall of Fame are Larry Bird (Indiana State), Chet Walker (Bradley) and Jerry Sloan (Evansville).  One of the all-time greats from Kansas City Metro played his college basketball at Wichita State the late Warren Armstrong.  In 1969 Armstrong was named ABA Rookie of the Year, ABA Playoffs MVP and was a member of the ABA Championship team that year.

What now?
Hey Laker fans what should we expect now?  Our team has three first round picks; will the team add three rookies to an already young lineup?  It’s difficult no down right impossible to gain entrance to the Laker brain-trust.  You must be bold in order to improve the Lakers and this is what Magic will attempt.  The 27th and 28th pick along with one player is likely to be traded for Paul George.

Now for the movement, does Brandon Ingram change positions or George because are small forwards.  I haven’t seen George enough however Ingram has demonstrated through his rookie year he can handle the basketball.  Would the Lakers move Ingram at 6-9 and 190 pounds to the shooting guard position?  This is the proposed lineup I could forsee:

Lonzo Ball-point guard
Brandon Ingram-shooting guard
Brook Lopez-center
Paul George-small forward ?
Julius Randle-power forward

A surprise move but not shocking
The Magic Johnson-Ron Pelinka Lakers made a move two days ahead of the the draft. Timofey Mozgov and D’Angelo Russell were traded to the Nets for Brook Lopez and the 27th pick in the draft.  The Lakers rid themselves of the huge Mozgov contract in addition he’d lost his starting job.  Was it his play or just the fact the Lakers decided to go with a youth movement?  As for Russell the youngster certainly has talent and perhaps it will be fully developed now with the Nets.  The Lakers have pick number 2, 27 and 28 for now, this trade is a surprise for this Laker fan but far from shocking.

Prove it
If you report a story with no documentation just reporting fails to provide validity to it.  You must have the person(s) involved or a secondary or third source to provide the accuracy of your story. I ask the question because once again Stephen A. Smith made a statement we cannot prove or disprove.  On ESPN ‘s First Take the discussion I heard dealt with NBA owners.  The question was asked who was a “good NBA owner?”  With no hesitation asked to name one co-host Max Kellerman said Dr. Jerry Buss late owner of the Lakers.  In his most unique way Smith said; “Dr. Buss promised Jerry West $1 million dollars and then reneged on the promise.”

Smith hinted that might have been the reason the long-time GM and president left the team. As most of you are aware I’m a long-time Laker fan and never ever heard this story before June 20, 2017.  Rather than depend on my memory I search the net in vain attempting to determine the story behind the story.  This leaves me scratching my heard according to Smith Dr. Buss was not a good owner because he reneged on a promise only Smith seems to believe exists. We can argue all day long regarding opinions this story is something totally different.

The brothers
High school athletes arrive in college with a reputation, most come from programs where they became “All-World.” That’s the case for LiAngelo Ball the middle son of LaVar Ball. Lonzo and LiAngelo are the same height and near the same weight. I could never ever state someone cannot play but there are concerns about LiAngelo's game.

Despite the bravado of daddy the middle son is not highly rated, ESPN Recruiting Nation and Rivals award this Ball 3 stars out of 5. As for baby brother LaMelo the reports on him are mixed, ESPN awards him 5 stars out of 5 yet Rivals offers 0 stars. Never in life would I profess to know whether the brothers (including Lonzo) can play at a high skill level. It should be interesting over the next few years to see how all three brothers and their game develop.

I admit I don’t know
The actual number is unclear however I’d estimate 80% of the Mizzou incoming are unknowns. Unknown in their talent and skill level, some might make the adjustment to college basketball easier and swifter than others.  They might be unfamiliar to me but I’m sure Cuonzo and the coaching staff knows who they are.

That is the case with Javon Pickett a 6-4 shooting guard from Belleville Illinois.  Pickett was one among several headed to Illinois prior to the school’s coaching change. Pickett is a 2017 graduate however he’ll attend a prep school and will be a 2018 freshman.  He’s rated the number 9 prospect in the State of Illinois which is outstanding.  The coaching staff is looking past Michael Porter Jr. continuing to re-build and re-brand the product.

It’s me
Paul George wants out; he has no desire to sign a long-range contract with the Pacers according to reports.  He‘s even named the team of his choice, that team is reported to be the Lakers. George grew up in Southern Cal and might want to return “home. “  Let’s back this vehicle up a moment; allow me to state I’m no charter member of the Paul George fan club. George is a very talented player however in my mind is not one who commands a max contract.

This entire situation would be different if the Lakers were not “forced” to make a trade to acquire George.  As mentioned previously George is a restricted free-agent.  The only method he becomes a Laker is through a trade.  I am totally opposed to reports circulating the Lakers might trade the number two pick in the 2017 draft for George.  I wish I had someone convince me this would be a good move for the Lakers.  I cannot see it and I pointed out early on It’s me.

I like him
Draymond Green has proven he’s a talent and a valuable part of the Warriors.  No doubt in my mind (and maybe others) he was one of the keys allowing the team to win a second championship in three years.  The tee-shirt he chose to wear at the victory parade was a hot dog move on his part.  The Warriors beat the Cavs convincingly there is no need for Green to “rub salt in the wounds. “  Green needs to tone it down a bit in my opinion, I’m out.

Is there a need?
We’ve witnessed the battle between the Heat and Chris Bosh over the last several seasons. Health issues have not allowed him to play a full season since 2013-14.  The Heat state Bosh is not healthy enough to play while Bosh’s doctors counter the claim.  All this is coming down to a point the Heat will release Bosh allowing him to become a free-agent.

Bosh turned 33 in March 2017 but has played little basketball over the last two seasons, he should have 3-4 good years remaining but who is willing to add him to their roster?  The 6-11 power forward has a nearly 20 ppg average so he should be able to aid a team as a starter or key reserve. If he’s truly healthy I’d like to see him back on the court once again no matter which team he might chose.

Bits n Pieces
I mentioned the possibility of the Celtics drafting Josh Jackson ex-Kansas Jayhawk.  It could be former Dukee Jayson Tatum as well; Tatum also fits that talented small forward role the team needs to fill.  I can hardly wait until Thursday to see how this plays out.

Which brother is under more intense pressure this upcoming season Lonzo or LiAngelo Ball?  I believe it to be the middle brother; LiAngelo is headed to UCLA without the fanfare of his older brother.  Can he play--of course he can but not at the skill level of Lonzo?  What should we expect from daddy LaVar if the youngster has only a fair collegiate season?

A planned Los Angeles arena
Many believe the prospect of a new arena in Los Angeles is a non-story.  As indicated earlier 2020 is the earliest possible date the new home of the Clippers could open.  There are several factors which make this an interesting possibility.  Clippers owner Steve Ballmer appears to have a strong desire to separate his franchise identity from that of the Lakers.  One of the methods for change is the Clippers playing in their own arena; they would be first in line for prime dates rather than in third place where they currently sit.

I’ve read letters from residents indicating the Clippers could move to Orange County however that appears to a non-factor for the owner.  In Inglewood they would be right in the heart of the metro and able to draw fans from all directions, we shall see.  The City of Inglewood is sayin’ place your money where your mouth is, they are requesting the Clippers to place a $1.5 million dollar non-refundable deposit to cover costs associated with the planning.  It appears Mr. Ballmer is serious on this proposal.  Ballmer is doing the best he can to separate his franchise from that of the Lakers.  This issue never seem to bother former owner Donald Sterling.

The hot rumor
Reports are circulating the Sixers and Celtic are reported to be trading draft picks.  I believe I’m correct NBA teams cannot “trade” players who are not under contract.  The Celtics draft Markelle Fultz with the first pick and the Sixers draft Josh Jackson with the third pick the teams would then trade picks.  Makes sense on several levels, the Celtics receive talented small forward Jackson and the Sixers receive perhaps one of the best point guards in the 2017 draft.

The Laker becomes a Clipper
Relax fans no Laker players have left for the Clippers just yet.  What has occurred former great Jerry West Showtime architect while GM has returned.  West is leaving his advisory role with the Warriors for the Clippers to work in the same capacity.  Now the main question does Doc Rivers give up his de facto GM hat?

Better yet will Rivers listen to the former long-time president and general manager of the Lakers.  After all West is the man who drafted Magic Johnson, traded for Kobe Bryant and signed free-agent Shaquille O’Neal?  At this point in time I would tend to believe and trust West in player acquisition over that of Rivers.  Can anyone point out any substantial accomplishment in player development by Rivers?

First it was Josh Jackson and then it’s ……..
We can only wait till Thursday but all sorts of rumors continue to fly regarding the Thursdays draft. The headline reads “Lakers draft a point guard” not earth shattering until you realize it’s not Lonzo Ball.  Reports from Lakerland indicate former Kentucky guard De Aaron Fox just might be the pick. I’m not going to defend the story only report it.

Does it still count?
The news is only a day old nothings been finalized; Louisville must vacate wins for a time-period however it’s unclear if their 2013 NCAA Championship will be included. Several years ago a number of Kansas fans were howling loudly at the time Syracuse was placed on probation.  In 2003 The Orangemen beat the Jayhawks for the national championship however the NCAA allowed Syracuse to retain the championship although infractions appeared to overlap the period.  .  Does a vacated title take away from the fact you actually won?

In Missouri and Kansas City to be precise Pembroke won three consecutive state championships with Jaron and Kareem Rush as members of the team.  Years later improprieties were uncovered and the state titles were taken away from the school.  Much earlier 1950 to be exact City College of New York won the NIT and NCAA Championship that same year.  The school later discovered gambling issues existed with organized crime figures a several members of the team.  If you check the history detail the NIT and NCAA still list the school as champion for that year.

The chief architect
Danny Ainge currently serves as president and general manager of the Celtics.  Once upon a time as a player he was a teammate of Bird, McHale, Parrish and company.  Ainge has been key to the Celtics return to the top ranks of the NBA.  Ainge through trade and player acquisition brought Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to the Celtics joining Paul Pierce.  After a 24-58 record this newly assembled team won 66 games and the 2008 NBA Championship.  The Celtics would continue to be a playoff team until 2011 when the downward slide began.  Exit Doc Rivers enter college coach Brad Stevens I along with a number off others felt uneasy about this move.

Other than Larry Brown few college coaches were able to achieve success at the NBA level, we soon found out Stevens would be different.  After winning but 25 games in 2014 player trades and draft choices and of course Stevens the Celtics began climbing in the ranks.  The Celtics lost to the Cavs (4-1) in this years playoffs but won two series (Bulls, Wizards).  We approach the draft and the possibility of adding a Josh Jackson to their lineup.  With all the moves and draft choices plus free agent signing one consistent in this has been Danny Ainge the chief architect.

“The hammer fell”

It wasn’t the “Death Penalty” but certainly close to the edge, the basketball world awaited the fate of Louisville.  You remember the prostitution story and the former assistant coach who was involved.  The NCAA finally ruled and its extensive, Coach Rick Pitino suspended for five games the school would be placed on four years probation.  Wins would be vacated for ineligible players during the time-period.

It’s unclear as this is written if the 2013 NCAA Tournament win will be included in the vacated number of games. Former assistant Andre McGee received a 10-year show cause order related to basketball.  McGee left Louisville earlier and became an assistant with University of Missouri-Kansas City.  UMKC suspended McGee and later terminated his contract after the story broke. The administration at Louisville intends to contest the ruling so this might not be the end of the story.

I can speculate with the best of ‘em

Mock draft sites NBADraft.net and DraftExpress.com are pretty much in agreement through the lottery.  We are a week away from the draft and change is in the air with one of the sites. Practically all season long they have placed Markelle Fultz at the top now to the Celtics and the Lakers with the second pick choosing Lonzo Ball.  NBADraft.net is now projecting the Lakers will chose Josh Jackson from Kansas with the second pick.

Besides the obvious what does that mean for the Lakers?  Jackson would become the shooting guard while Russell remains at the point.  The Lakers believe Brandon Ingram is a future star at small forward therefore the Jackson move to the two.  How does Larry Laker view this possible change you ask?  I still believe the Lakers are in a win-win situation whether the choice is Ball or Jackson.  Magic Johnson make the move you believe most beneficial to the continued growth of this young team.

They did it again
ESPN’s 30 for 30 film group did it again, they told an excellent story on the Celtic and Lakers. Celtics/Lakers Best of Enemies was done in a 3-part series over two evenings.  It is well worth your time whether you are a Celtics or Lakers fan.  It goes far beyond the NBA and these two storied franchises.  The film covers a portion of history in America during a turbulent period in time.
You are what you eat
I’m sure many of you have heard the headline statement previously.  Nowhere might it be truer than in the NBA.  Rod Strickland serves as an assistant coach with the Kentucky Wildcats.  For those who might be unfamiliar Strickland once played in the NBA.  This is his story; he claims at the time he first arrived in the NBA he was single.  His eating habits he admits were not the greatest it consisted of eating at numerous fast food restaurants.

Strickland indicates a veteran on the team call him aside one day and informed him “You keep eating like that and you will be out of the league in five years.”  Strickland changed his eating habits and began eating a restaurants rather than fast-food.  ESPN compiled a list of favorite eating habits of NBA players across the nation, other than Chipotle Mexican Grill all the establishments profiled were restaurants.  I’m sure there still exists players who follow the habits Strickland once held however it appears most know the better restaurants in the nation.

I hadn’t thought about this
Someone must refresh my memory from two years ago; the victory parade for the Warriors is scheduled today in Oakland.  The franchise represents two major cities Oakland and San Francisco and I need help on a question. Oracle Arena is located in Oakland do both municipalities host a parade?  Those living in the Bay Area already have an answer to the question.  I’m going to check with a friend and see if he knows, I’ll get back with you on this one. UPDATE: According to my friend the parade is held in Oakland only.

He’s a non-factor
Over the top LaVar Ball’s name continues to resonate with the media regarding the NBA Draft. Many are stating he will affect the draft status of son Lonzo I say baloney.  Whether it’s Magic Johnson, Danny Ainge or somebody else LaVar is a non-factor.  Everybody known’s him if nothing more than his bravado.  Shame on any team which fails to draft Lonzo just because of his dad.  At this point it appears the son appears to be level headed; we shall see the outcome in several days time.

I don’t hate
It is time once again to clear the air, I’m not a hater.  A number of you (you know who you are) have accused me of being a LeBron hater.  In the past I expressed my displeasure with him leaving Cleveland for South Beach.  Since LeBron’s return to Cleveland I believe I’ve said few negatives regarding him.  You believe I’m a hater because I don’t hold him in the high esteem you do.  I find it even more fascinating you can erupt with Kobe Bryant vitriol yet I’m the one accused of hatred.

So let me see if I understand its okay for you to make a negative statement about the retired Kobe Bryant but it’s not okay for me to praise LeBron.  I believed for quite awhile LeBron James has been the best basketball player in the world.  Despite this view I’m not going to fall all over myself praising the players’ game.  LeBron will be 33 years old when the season rolls around.  He’s got plenty of good years ahead of him to tie or even establish records that will never be eclipsed.  I’m gonna give him his props; I refuse to go mushy over LeBron.

“Isn’t that special”
Fans of SNL will remember the line above by Dana Carvey in his skits as The Church Lady. This report has nothing to do with SNL, Carvey or church its Clippers owner Steve Ballmer.  It appears Ballmer intends to build his own arena; the owner wants his Clipper team out of Staples Center. He could not move the Clippers until 2024 due to being tied to the lease agreement.

Inglewood will be the sight of the new arena and according to reports Ballmer intends to pay for the entire cost of the project.  As for the time line the possibility exists the building could be complete by 2020 what’s to keep Ballmer from breaking his lease?  After all its only money, not exactly shocking for Ballmer.  He's reported to have paid the highest amount to date ($1 billion dollars) in purchasing an NBA franchise, stay tuned as this story continues to evolve.

“You are not him”
This became another occasion that caused me to laugh out loud regarding a media member’s statement.  An ex-football player said; “The average person cannot be LeBron James at 6-8 and 270 pounds.  They cannot be Kevin Durant at 7 feet but they can be Steph Curry.”  He went on to point to the fact that Curry is 6-1 or 6-2 and stopped at that point.  I yelled loudly at my television NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!  I must admit Curry is the “little guy” of the group mentioned however my football friend failed to take into consideration the handles of this point guard.

Mr. Football didn’t consider the amount of work it took for Curry to gain skill in long range shooting or developing passing skills and moves around the basket.  Sure all of us can be Curry if we make 1,000 jump shots a day, work on all the aspects allowing us to become the best of the best.  A friend also pointed out the brilliant hand-eye coordination of Curry.  No Mr. Football we cannot all be Steph Curry despite his rather average build it takes skill, talent and most of all practice, practice and more practice.  The skills required to play basketball at this level is far different from NFL football.

No-----please no!!!
I don’t know Mizzou AD Jim Sterk in the same manner as long-time AD Mike Alden.  Sterk’s only been on the job since last August, I give him kudos in moving swiftly to replace Kim Anderson with Cuonzo Martin.  Mizzou basketball was going nowhere with Anderson at the helm---good guy but in a bad place.  The jury is still out regarding the Martin hire however the belief is he will turn the basketball program around.  The AD visited Kansas City on Monday to speak to the Tiger Club the local alumni group.

Sterk mentioned his desire to re-start the Border War rivalry with Kansas.  Allow me to vent my position in life I have 0 effect on any decision Mizzou should take.  I only have a voice of opposition if this series would be resurrected.  For nearly six years Bill Self and Kansas have been insistent the school never intended to play Mizzou again.  Although Mizzou has not played every school Kansas is the only butt-hole in its actions.   Self and Kansas please remain in place just as stubborn as you’ve been in the past I have no desire to play you in any sport.

Bits n Pieces
Disposable or discretionary income is the phrase.  I don’t exactly remember but I’m sure it was in a micro or macro economics class I first heard the term.  “Income remaining after deduction of taxes and other mandatory charges, available to be spent or saved as one wishes.”  This person must have plenty of disposable income based on his or her recent purchase.  The basketball shoes worn by Michael Jordan in the 1984 Gold Medal Game against Spain went on the auction block.  SCP Auction announced the shoes for $190,373 dollars.

Butler moved quickly to replace Chris Holtmann who moved on to the Ohio State job.  The school hired assistant Lavall Jordan a former Bulldog player and at one time a time assistant coach at Butler.  Jordan left the head coaching position at Milwaukee to take the position at his Alma mater, good luck coach in this next journey.

It’s going to be a couple of weeks before I return to the barber shop, I wonder if my barber friend has changed his mind regarding Kevin Durant now.  I’d mentioned he was upset with Durant not for leaving Oklahoma but the fact his former team had just lost a series against the Warriors.  I must admit I was concerned at the beginning of the season.  I believed and stated as much; “someone’s game will suffer” I believed that player to be Klay Thompson.  At the conclusion of a championship season I’m not sure if Thompson really suffered.

Game 5
What do you expect in the game tonight might be the question of the day.  This portion of the report is written 4 hours in advance of tonight's tip-off.  I’m unsure about you but this is what I expect.  The Cavs will play as if their hair is on fire for most of the first quarter, slowly the Warriors will climb back into competition and continue to the end of the fourth quarter.

According to ESPN.com an individual paid $133,000 for two court side seats.  This was a match for the ages from two highly talented and competitive teams.  71 points scored in the first half and the Warriors appeared to be on the way.  It was a combination of Warrior baskets, Cavs misses and TO’s that contributed to the Warrior lead.  In the second half the game became a heavyweight championship bout as each team registered knockout blow after blow.  Neither team was never able to deliver the knockout; J.R. Smith had a game for the ages as he hit crucial 3-point baskets to allow his Cavs to remain in the game.

A guy by the name of LeBron James almost registered a triple-double as he scored 41 points along with 13 rebounds and 8 assists.  I cannot leave out Kyrie Irving as well with his drives to the basket.  The key in my view was the Warrior bench, Andre Iguodala and company was so much better than the Cavs reserves. Final score Warriors 129 Cavs 120.  I cannot close without a comment on MVP Durant and Steph Curry who were instrumental in the Warriors victory.

The “Ben Simmons” factor
I stated earlier Mizzou basketball has been on an upward trend since March.  In late May leading into early June we have no idea what the future holds for the basketball program. Naturally we hope it’s all positive however that’s an unknown.  You question the Simmons factor mentioned in the headline.  “All-World” Ben Simmons arrived at LSU expected to lead them to the Promised Land. We had no doubt of his talent however a strange thing occurred on the road to an NCAA Championship.

LSU under achieved for most of the season and most of had nothing to do with the talented Simmons.  Later we discovered film crews followed Simmons throughout his freshman year and reports indicate there were teammates upset with the media coverage showered on Simmons.  It’s undermined until October but the question, will there be cameras following Michael Porter Jr. 24/7? If not him then maybe its high profile Jeremiah Tilmon who becomes the focus.  Those questions and others cannot be answered at this time the hope is everyone is well adjusted and plays good basketball.

Rumors
About two weeks from now we’ll discover who the Lakers choose with the number two pick. We could be surprised but no where close to 2015; you remember that draft don’t you?  All signs pointed to the Lakers selecting Jahlil Okafor and the actual choice was D’Angelo Russell.  Fast forward to 2017 media reports indicate Lonzo Ball “didn’t wow” the gathering in his Laker workout. Several sources claim the specter of LaVar Ball might over shadow the prospect of Lonzo being drafted.

Whether it’s the Lakers or somebody else LaVar Ball will not be a factor Lonzo’s potential is the real deal.  The question might be by whose standards; Magic Johnson “appears” to be sold on the youngster and is in his corner.  The only gambling I do these days is to drive the various Interstate highways surrounding the Kansas City Metro as for the draft I say it’s a 75% chance the Lakers choose Ball.  As for the others Josh Jackson is at 20% and all others 5%.  If it turns out I’m wrong you have a belly laugh on my account, enjoy.

What’s old becomes new again
KeyArena in Seattle opened in 1962; it was renovated in 1964 and again in 1994-95. Renovation is the name of the game in an effort to attract an NHL/NBA team.  Three groups were involved in arenas proposals for the city and the mayor chose the “Refurbishers.”  That’s what I’m calling the team of Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer Celtics minority owner David Bonderman and Tim Leiweke the principal movers on this endeavor.

The projected cost of the plan is reported to be $564 million dollars and should be complete by October 2020.  As for seating the “new” arena would host 18,350 for NBA games and 17,100 for the NHL.  It’s anticipated the NHL would take the lead unless a team applies for relocation.  The mayor will present the Oak View group to the city council.  Chris Hansen leading one of the other groups which includes Seahawk QB Russell Wilson intends to remain in the picture.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Published Monday-Friday

My intention
This is change number well guess what I’ve lost count of the changes.  The revised plan is for me to attempting for Words eye view to become a Monday through Friday publication beginning this morning.  The chief reason for the change basketball news on Monday has been delayed until Wednesday morning.  You say there could be breaking news on Saturday or Sunday I can agree however I’ll just deal with that possibility occurring.  Here goes change number-------I don’t remember.

He replaced the guy who replaced that other guy
Sports fans I’m going to admit up front I don’t know a great deal about Chris Holtmann.  He’s the new men’s basketball coach at Ohio State the balance of this account I had to research. Holtmann replaces the recently fired Thad Matta who held the job for 13 seasons at the school. The resume for the new coach looks impressive, he’s 45-years old and he guided Butler to a 70-31 record in three seasons.

After Brad Stevens departed Butler for the NBA Celtics the school hired Brandon Miller as head coach.  Holtmann was hired as assistant coach at Butler he would assume the role of interim head coach when Miller took a medical leave of absence, later the interim tag was moved and he assumed the duties as head coach.  Ohio State (at least under Matta) was an able recruiter of basketball talent.  It’s now up to Holtmann if he can manage to keep the pipeline full of prospective recruits.

SEC Country
On the map the State of Missouri shares borders with SEC rivals Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee that’s it.  The move to the SEC was not done with geography in mind it was done with $$$ as the basis for the move.  Naturally change is difficult for some me included, Neil asked me just the other day; “Are you okay with Mizzou in the SEC?”  Before the 2012 move Mizzou was a member of the Big 12 Conference and its previous incarnations.

I wasn’t pleased at first, the rivalries I’d grown accustom to as a youngster and now an adult were no longer there.  I wanted continued play against Iowa State, Kansas State and especially Kansas in basketball.  My chief concern with the SEC at this juncture the football and basketball teams have not been competitive that’s the only downsize for me.  Rivalries are established, Mike Anderson at Arkansas former Mizzou coach, Calipari’s Kentucky Wildcats and Frank Martin at South Carolina are just a few of the new rivalries in my view.  Yes Neil it’s been kinda rocky at first but I’m actually okay with the move now.

Sad news
I’ve noted in the past most Euro players I’m unfamiliar with until the draft.  Even at that time they are just a name we have no idea if they can play at the NBA level.  An even worse outcome is an injury or illness preventing them from determining if they can play.  That is the case for Jonathan Jeanne the 7-footer from France.  Jeanne was projected as a mid-first round pick until a medical exam indicated Marfan syndrome.

If the medical condition sounds familiar it should if you remember Isaiah Austin, expected to be drafted in 2014 Austin was never able to fulfill his NBA aspirations.  Although his doctor later cleared him to play no NBA team chose to sign Austin he’s currently playing in Europe.  “The disease affects the heart, eyes, blood vessels and bones.  Treatment includes medication to keep the blood pressure low, eye glasses or contact lens and surgery.”  We shall await further news regarding Jeanne.
