Basketball from a fan’s perspective

The fat lady is not singing
She is certainly tuning up after the Raptors won 105-92.  Kawhi Leonard led the way for the Raptors with 36 points and 12 rebounds and 4 steals.  The Raptors now take a commanding 3 games to 1 lead, Game 4 is scheduled for Monday 8 p.m. Central Time.
June 7
The date is Allen Iverson’s birthday, video was show on social media the first time he met Michael Jordan.  His crossover move caused MJ to slide to the opposite direction of Iverson, naturally Iverson took the shot and sunk the basket.  The crossover has several variables but exactly who first used it in the NBA?  Most of us believe it was Tim Hardaway who arrived in 1989.

God Shammgod was drafted in 1997 but utilized the move while enrolled at Providence. Several basketball stories are wrapped in urban myth and legend and the invention of the crossover might be one.  Those who are familiar with Rucker Park might be aware of Pee Wee Kirkland.  Wikipedia claims “The crossover was first seen in a street game by Kirkland.”  Kirkland is now 74-years old; this guesstimate says he may have invented the crossover at some point in the 1960’s.
A follow up
Mark James Warriors investor will not be visible when Chase Center opens next season in San Francisco.  In fact, reports are circulating in addition to being banned the NBA might force James to sell his share in the Warriors.  Don’t think it could occur, we’ll history paints a different picture.  The late Ted Stepien was majority owner of the Cavs from 1981-1983, the New York Times wrote: "The worst club (Cavs) and most poorly run franchise in professional basketball."  More recently we had the case of former Clippers owner Donald Sterling.
Sterling was forced to sell the franchise in 1984 due to racist remarks he made which became public.  Looking backward and you can confirm this I located several articles written at the time claiming, “The NBA can’t force an owner to sell.”  If we consider Mark James as an investor with the team rather than majority owner consider this, Ted Stepien and Donald Sterling were majority owners and they were forced to sell.  I certainly claim no legal expertise, but we have a few people who believe an NBA franchise is a Fortune 500 company.  A franchise might be more akin to a proprietorship rather than a corporation.
A new college basketball tournament
American’s often forget we didn’t invent basketball; it was a Canadian who gave us the game. Dr. James Naismith was working at the Springfield Massachusetts YMCA at the time he wanted an inside sport for the cold New England winters.  Dr. Naismith drew up the 13 rules for the game of Basket Ball in 1891 when he was only 30-years old.
Dr. Naismith was born in 1861 in Almonte Ontario about 65 km from Ottawa.  Toronto will host the inaugural James A. Naismith Tournament tripleheader November 16, Tennessee will play Washington, Buffalo faces Harvard and Rutgers will be matched against St. Bonaventure.  The games will be played at Scotiabank Arena home of the NBA Raptors and NHL Maple Leafs.
Three head coaches
The Lakers announced the hiring of former head coach Lionel Hollins as an assistant on Frank Vogel’s staff.  Hollins served as head coach for the Grizzlies but was dismissed in 2013, he joins a staff which also includes assistant Jason Kidd also a former head coach.  The Lakers now have three coaches including Vogel with head coaching experience, will Vogel be looking over his shoulder might be the question?  It’s too early to respond however we can be assured Vogel was involved in the hiring.  Surely if Vogel had uneasiness with the hire of Hollins or Kidd more than likely he would have voiced his concerns.
