Basketball from a fan’s perspective

Published Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday

That ship has already sailed
The NBA announced a few teams will sport throwback jerseys this season.  We should see Vancouver Grizzlies and Seattle Sonics jerseys.  The Grizzlies franchise has called Memphis Tennessee home since 2001.  As for Sonics they are today’s Thunder, they moved to Oklahoma City in 2008.  Nothing wrong with throwback jerseys for fans, seeing them worn by NBA teams representing a city no longer in the league is uncool to me.
They are “sloooooooow!”
Don’t confuse the Georgia Tech NCAA violations with the Adidas trial, it’s my understanding they are not connected.  Thus far North Carolina State and Kansas have been named by the NCAA as being guilty of infractions.  It really doesn’t matter if other schools are named, they too will face the sloooooooow response time of the NCAA.  The NCAA recently indicated punishment would be forthcoming late this year, notice the timeline?
Should North Carolina State, Kansas and other unnamed schools qualify for the 2020 NCAA tournament guess what occurs?  The named schools and others will qualify to play in the 2020 tournament.  If you’ve read this blog in the past, I stated there should be a governing body in place.  It appears Blue Blood programs are never found guilty of infractions, surely this can’t be accurate.  The schools mentioned and possibly others will not be sidelined due to revenue the NCAA generates from the tournament.  Yes, it’s sad to make that statement but it’s the truth.
“Don’t Slay the Messenger”
Kawhi Leonard and Paul George were booed at an MMA match and Rams game in, wait for it, wait for it…. Los Angeles of all places.  Why the vitriol aimed at the two now local athletes, perhaps a large portion of the booing occurred was due to Leonard and George rejecting the Lakers.  Despite a major, major upgrade by the Clippers in the off-season countless numbers in Los Angeles continue to believe as Ice Cube once stated,” This (Los Angeles) is a Lakers town.”  This Laker fan is only reporting what’s out there, don’t slay the messenger.”
Mizzou gets no Love!
5-star prospect and St. Louis kid Caleb Love made his commitment known on Tuesday.  Love has been pursued by Cuonzo Martin at Mizzou and North Carolina’s Roy Williams too.  We of Mizzou Nation held out hope Love might remain “home” and not choose the Tarheels, and then came the announcement Love choose North Carolina, darn it Mizzou struck out again.  Carolina basketball history prevailed over that of Mizzou, oh well hopefully next time.
Good luck Caleb Love with your decision we Mizzou fans held out hope to the last few days you’d remain at home, but the choice was yours.  I agree with the fan website Rock M. Nation, it states “Cuonzo Martin can win without 5-star prospects.”  This Mizzou fan can agree with that assessment, we sometimes get caught up with one and done athletes and the NBA.  We tend to forget it’s about winning at the college level and not the NBA.
Best NBA back court
You thought I was going to say the Warriors of Curry and Thompson, that combo might be NBA champs however I’m looking toward the Pacific Northwest.  It’s Damian Lillard or Dame and his running mate CJ McCollum representing the back court of the Portland Trail Blazers.  Last season point guard Lillard led the way for the Blazers averaging nearly 26 points and 7 assists a game, shooting guard McCollum scored 21 points and dished out 4 assists.  It should be of note this talented back court did not arrive in the NBA from traditional basketball powers.
Lillard from Oakland (CA) played his college basketball at Weber State in Utah, as for McCollum home was Canton (OH) and Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.  Just recently Blazer management decided in favor of locking down McCollum with a 3-year $100 million contract.  This ensures the back court mates will be paired into a portion of the future.  As for the numbers the Curry/Thompson back court combined for 48.8 points per game, the Lillard/McCollum combo 47 points per game.  Your call the Warrior back court is championship tested but are they light years ahead of the Blazers?
