Basketball from a fan’s perspective

Published Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday

Chase Center
It was an exhibition game, that should be mentioned at the beginning of this account.  We discovered on Saturday evening the Lakers can field a tall starting lineup, we saw this when they faced the Warriors on Saturday:
7-foot JaVale McGee
6-foot 10-inch Anthony Davis
6-foot 8-inch LeBron James
6-foot 6-inch Danny Green
6-foot 2-inch Avery Bradley
The Lakers appear to have a roster of interchangeable parts, as for guard play its going to be vital in 2019-20.  As for Chase Center the television audience (and those in attendance) the building appears quite palatial.  Rick Welts Warriors owner appeared briefly on television discussing aspects of the arena; he stated the number of seats in Chase is smaller than Oracle.

The desire was to maintain much of the ambiance of Oracle.  I was curious perhaps anxious to see evidence of the chemistry between Anthony Davis and LeBron James, the duo only played the 1st half but looked good; the outcome of the game was irrelevant from my standpoint, 3-4 weeks from now it will be a completely different matter.
Sorry, this is funny to me
Kansas along with several schools across the nation kicks off the pending basketball season with Midnight Madness.  For those unfamiliar this is the time of the year college teams can “officially” begin practice for the season.  Other than an A team versus B team game other forms of entertainment are provided for the gathering.  Kansas decided to invite rapper-artist Snoop Dogg for their kick-off, Saturday morning the AD at the school issued an apology for what some might consider a rowdy show.  Snoop’s rap performance was unedited but that might have been only part of the problem.
In addition, there were women on poles, a fake gun which shot bills containing Snoop’s photo but the portion of the performance that may have caused the most problem was the music.  The AD department believed his rap tunes would consist of edited versions which was not the case.  The basketball arena was primarily young people who are fans of his or at the very least expected this type of performance.  I’m sure parents with teens and pre-teens in attendance might have been upset but clearly it was the AD department most upset with the result.
Rest assured, Snoop will not be invited to another Midnight Madness at Kansas anytime soon.  I’m certainly not going to endear myself to Jayhawk fans after they read this.  Mention NCAA investigation and many begin pointing fingers at other programs.  I’ve got news for them those programs have not been recently cited.  It’s as if one might say, “They robbed the bank on State Street before I robbed the Main Street branch.”  We can say in truth what does it really matter if both parties are guilty of improprieties.
The good and the bad
Positive news for the Ball family is followed by that of the negative type.  In Pelicans training camp Lonzo has a new jump shot which appears to be improved.  Youngest brother LaMelo playing the exhibition season in Australia is also receiving positives on his improved play.  It appears his enhanced game thus far has impressed NBA scouts.
As for daddy Ball a different story endures, briefly a few months ago it was reported his partner had misused company funds from Big Baller Brand.  Naturally LaVar filed a lawsuit against former partner Alan Foster.  Little news of the suit occurred until last week, Foster countersued Ball and BBB.  Updates will be provided as they become known.  It’s certainly of interest Foster accuses LaVar of the same charge levied at him.
Blue Blood programs
I checked ESPN’s college basketball page and discovered this.  Story after story featured a player or school from a Blue Blood program.  Its clear damaging history is short lived, in the instance of Louisville basketball a report on a prospect is near the top middle portion of the page.  The next story is Duke related followed by North Carolina and Michigan State.  This was followed by two additional stories on Carolina basketball.  They were followed by Kentucky Michigan State (again) and UCLA.
Two stories in succession on Oregon basketball and two on USC along with another Kentucky account.  I hope this doesn’t appear as if I’m upset with the coverage far from it, each of the schools mentioned has a basketball history that demands front page coverage.  We could debate the logic whether all the universities mentioned are Blue Blood programs.  I’m not going to do that, if you check the page daily you will continue to see the same number always profiled.  Missing from the front page was an account of Kansas basketball and last season’s NCAA champion Virginia Cavaliers.
