Basketball from a fan’s perspective

NBA Training Camp News

A change
I have a friend whom I believe might be more an NFL fan than NBA, she complained the other day.  “Football has just begun and they (NBA) are playing basketball already.”  I advised her the regular season starts October 22nd.  Why so early, I’m not sure just a theory.  At one time it seemed the NBA purposely attempted to avoid conflicting with other professional sports.  The season didn’t begin until late in November, as baseball has expanded its playoff system the World Series champion has often not been decided until November.  We have NFL football, NBA basketball and playoff baseball all vying for viewers at the time.
“Sexmachine”
In 1971 the late R&B artist James Brown recorded a tune titled “Sexmachine”, one of the lines from the song was “Hit it and quit it” which is what I intend to do.  Controversial issues have been covered from time to time in Words eye view however it’s my belief politics have been avoided.  Unfortunately, this is one of those occasions politics must be discussed.  The GM of the Rockets sent a tweet out which offended the Chinese government.  His tweet was his alone, it didn’t represent the Rockets and certainly didn’t represent the government of the United States.
The Chinese government offended by the tweet mandated several changes in its relationship to the NBA.  These are all economic related including cancelling the balance of games scheduled in China.  This is not China this is the USA, it’s too bad their government was offended by a 6-word tweet that resulted in such drastic measures being implemented.  If the government of the United States had issued the statement it might be a different matter, a few Americans including yours truly fail to understand.  Sports has become a cultural bridge, it’s too bad repairs are in order.
You can now challenge
The NBA has now joined major league baseball and the NFL.  Coaches can now challenge an official’s call; this is being conducted on a one-year trial basis.  The change is somewhat extensive so for further detail check out NBA.com for key provisions of this change.  The Rockets Mike D’Antoni became the first coach to utilize a challenge.
He can defend…that might be the difference
Barring illness or injury (fingers-crossed) we have no idea, Avery Bradley started at the point for the Lakers on Saturday, will he be the starter over Rondo?  Frank Vogel is a defensive minded coach; Bradley’s was All-Defensive 2nd team in 2013 and All-Defensive 1st team in 2016 during his NBA career.  Rajon Rondo and Avery Bradley let’s check some facts.
Over his career we could state with conviction Rondo is better at running a team’s offense but is sorely lacking on defense.  Oh, one other point the two are probably about equal shooting the basketball.  With point forward LeBron on the floor plus Anthony Davis (3.9 assists last season) there is no requirement for Rondo or Davis to play major minutes?  What’s your take on this somewhat surprising move by Vogel?
He ain’t that tall
Remember the NBA mandated teams must register a player’s actual height?  First it was Zion Williamson who went from 6 foot 7 to 6 foot 6.  Now the measurement rule has struck again reducing the height of another player.  This time it’s the Celtics Tacko Fall, we thought he was 7 foot 7 inches.  It turns out he’s only” 7 foot 5, which is still interesting.  If Tacko earns a roster position he will remain the tallest active player in the NBA.  Several fans are quite imaginative in their apparel, note the two fans in TD dressed as Tacos.   😊
No AD….no matter
Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry says; “Stop comparing Zion Williamson to LeBron James.”  That doesn’t seem to matter If the turnout for practice is any indication for the future.  Two keys Pelican fans don’t miss Anthony Davis at all, it appears large numbers of fans are excited about the pending won-loss record for the Pelicans in 2019-20.
It’s been reported a crowd estimated at 10,000+ was in attendance for an open scrimmage which featured Zion Williamson.  There’s more going than simply adding Zion to the roster.  Newcomers Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, Brandon Ingram and JJ Redick plus holdover Jrue Holiday signal improved performance in the future.  We could add the names of rookies Jaxson Hayes and Nickeil Alexander-Walker to the mix.
