Bits n Pieces
SI.com is claiming the NBA would like the Kings sold to a Seattle group. Really makes sense, the Magoof’s---opps Maloof’s appear to be financially strapped at this point.

He’s only 28-years old but Adam Morrison’s NBA career appears to be over. He arrived from Gonzaga with such promise but a knee injury might have been key to derailing his career. The Blazers might have been his last opportunity to latch on to an NBA team.

How come Mizzou drops in the polls after losing to Louisville at a time the Cardinals were the number 2 team in the nation.  I guess losing to a top 5 team counts more than another.  Top 25 doesn’t amount too much except bragging rights.

This is interesting; we all know the NFL is king in producing revenue. I’ve always been unsure where the NBA stood in relation to baseball. I cannot verify these figures however if they are close to factual it would indicate the NBA might actually rank above baseball based on the number of games. Baseball is reported to produce $7.1 billion in 162 games while the NBA is at $4.1 billion in 82 games.

Another high school freshman you should note. He’s a 6-6 180 pound shooting guard named V. J. King. King is from Akron (OH) and attends St Vincent-St Mary High School. If the school sounds familiar it should, it’s the high school LeBron James attended.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar finally has his statue; perhaps this gesture by the Lakers will soothe the hurt feelings often expressed by Kareem over the last several years.

Speaking of the Lakers their fans have grow accustom to centers unable to shoot free throws at an acceptable rate. We could go way back to Wilt Chamberlain but can begin much later with Shaquille O’ Neal. It was Don Nelson coaching the Bucks who first began Hack-a-Shaq. Fouling Shaq during close games forcing him to the free-throw line. Fast forward to present day, someone must have left a door open at Staples; Dwight Howard shot an air-ball free throw against the Nets during their recent game.

“You win some you lose some”
I’m unsure who first uttered the above phrase; we must guess it simply states games you should win you sometimes lose. It’s early in the collegiate season teams are yet to begin conference play, they are adjusting to new teammates maybe a new playbook. With that said I tuned into the Cal-Poly-UCLA game at Pauley Pavilion. I didn’t stay with the game in fact I left it near half-time to view another game. Logic dictates UCLA at home against Cal-Poly you mark that one in the win column. The following morning checking scores I was shocked, UCLA lost the game 70-68. I admit I haven’t seen enough of UCLA to pass judgment but with them like Duke, Kentucky and North Carolina you expect the best. Perhaps those of you who follow UCLA closer than me can identify some of the problems.

I have questions
I try not to get inside the mind of any coach, most deal with issues I would not comprehend. With that allow me to discuss Greg Popovich briefly. For years I’ve heard stories on why he’s such a great coach. He might be a great coach but his coaching style is strange at times. I noticed last year Spurs starters were missing in action on occasion. The players weren’t injured or absent Coach Pop just chose to “rest” them. Last season the Spurs roared out of the starting blocks as if to win the NBA Championship. I thought “the rested Spurs players would be ready for the playoffs.” Rest or not they were no match for the Thunder and lost their playoff series. This year Coach Pop did the resting thing but it might cost this time. Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili plus Gerald Green were in San Antonio, the balance of the team in Miami. Commissioner Stern issued a terse statement regarding Coach Pop’s actions. Can you say a large fine maybe?  I borrow this from another, "could you imagine Pat Riley sitting down Kareem, Magic or Worthy?  How bout the Celtics of Bird, McHale and Parrish?"  Defenders of Popovich claim it's his decision to manage the team as he feels appropriate.  I say Hell no, this ain't playground basketball you cannot make up rules based on your scheduling issues.

The initial “Battle of the Boroughs”
Interesting in all my NBA years I’ve never heard the Knicks described as the “Manhattan” Knicks. That was the term utilized by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. Brooklyn native and veteran NBA broadcaster Marv Albert was behind the microphone as New York‘s two NBA teams faced each other. According to Google Maps if we utilize the Brooklyn Bridge Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center are 6.9 miles and 28 minutes apart in current traffic. A short distance apart but you wouldn’t believe it listening to fans of the franchises. The game was described as having a playoff atmosphere, the Nets winning the first battle 96-89 in overtime. This was the first battle of the boroughs however this is just the beginning. The teams are now 9-4 and tied for the lead in the Atlantic Division. We might have witnessed the development of an interesting and entertaining rivalry.

Mizzou signings
With signed letters of intent ESPN has rated the Tiger recruiting class 20th best in the nation.  I don't remember the school having a recruiting class rated this high.  Three Mizzou Class of 2013 prospects signed letters of intent during the early signing period, Mizzou has but one scholarship available.  How does Rivals see these prospects?  Below are the ratings listed behind their stats;

Wesley Clark PG 6-0 175 4 stars
Torren Jones PF 6-8 215 4 stars
Johnathan Williams III PF 6-9 210 4 stars

Moving????
DePaul will possibly move their their games to the United Center next year. I wasn’t familiar with the lay of the land so I had to check Google maps for details. DePaul has played a number of years at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont Illinois. Point to point the United Center is located about 4 miles from the campus of DePaul, distance to Rosemont from the Chicago campus is about 15 miles. Bottom line is always financial; this should be a win-win for the university and the student body. If moving to the larger United Center produces increased cost for student seating a move of convenience becomes one that might be considered inconvenient.

I got my eye on you
The Cavs have settled down after a great deal of hype from owner Dan Gilbert. Most of us understand the owners’ disappointment, his superstar player left the team. With that said Gilbert continue to rant, how about his claim the Cavs would win a championship before the Heat. I think Gilbert missed on that one don’t you agree? In any event the Cavs are on the road to recovery; the record was terrible last season however they have a nucleus of young players to groom. The base of course is the point guard Kyrie Irving, his rookie year was outstanding.  Naming names there is 2nd year man Tristan Thompson and the potential of rookie Tyler Zeller.  If Gilbert is patient and allows Coach Scott time to repair the team in time they will become a force in the Eastern Conference once again.

Unsure what he was doing
I thought the critical remarks Magic Johnson aimed at Laker management was miss directed he made one statement I agree. Magic said “it was a mistake hiring Mike Brown.” Hopefully this time next year I will not offer a similar story on Mike D’Antoni. It’s been pointed out there were a number of reasons for the Lakers poor play. Shouldn’t a coach attempt to maximize a player’s strength? Byron Kamenetzky who covers the Lakers for ESPN.com made this comment. “Antwan Jamison was a non-factor off Brown’s bench; he’s become a different player under D’Antoni. Jamison is a natural power forward and not a small forward, he‘s a slasher not a jump shooter. That’s not to say Jamison cannot shot jump shots his game is down low.” Reserve shooting guard Jody Meeks is another reclamation project; his productivity has risen significantly under D’Antoni. It’s been pointed out even Pau Gasol’s game has improved under the new coach. The remarks by Mitch Kupchak and others continued to echo the theme “Mike Brown was a nice guy which I don’t doubt. I’m not smart enough to determine where to point the finger of blame, players must buy into a system which appeared to be evident many didn’t. You cannot fire 14 guys so who do you terminate-----the coach.

I’m unsure who to yell at!

In this day of every game being televised I've become spoiled. Once I discovered Mizzou was headed to the Bahamas for the Battle of Atlantis I thought great. The field was loaded (Louisville, Duke) so I thought I’d see good basketball. Reading comments in various publications indicated I wasn’t the only fan who missed the Mizzou-Stanford game. The Kansas City fans able to view the game had DirecTV, Dish Network or another cable system. The second largest cable system in the nation (Kansas City) was excluded. Time Warner Cable does not offer AXS-TV as part of its package of channels. O don’t know who to address my question however why chose a provider not available to the vast majority of Kansas City residents? In any event radio it was to keep up with the Stanford game which Mizzou won. Louisville proved to me why they are the number two team in the nation. They ran Mizzou out of the gym, it was a very disappointing evening Phil Pressey (8 TO’s) and me. The journey to Paradise Island almost became “Paradise Lost” however Mizzou managed to pull out a hard fought semifinal game and won 68-65 in their match against VCU. All three games Stanford, Louisville and VCU provided a learning experience for Mizzou.

Not looking forward to the season
Sacramento fans are probably not excited for the start of the NBA season. On the other hand if the Mayan calendar is correct there is no requirement for any of us to worry.  If we have not been blown up or floated out to space by December 21st its likely this will be the Kings last season in the capital of California.  Mayor Johnson thought he’d brokered a deal with the Maloof brothers, turns out the Maloof’s “wanna play they just don’t wanna pay.” The Kings are going nowhere on the court, they are likely on the way out town at the conclusion of the season. I hate to see a city lose its team however those of us in Kansas City know the feeling, same for the residents of Seattle. The only city to suffer but a brief period of time is Charlotte. The Hornets left the city moving to New Orleans and were replaced by the expansion Bobcats.

Waiting
I wonder if the self appointed Kobe hater Jason Whitlock checked out his game against the Rockets. The “selfish” player scored 22 points grabbed 11 rebounds while dishing out 11 assists. In addition there were 3 steals and only 3 TO’s while shooting 9 for 18 from the floor in 35 minutes on the floor. I think I can trace Whitlock’s hatred to a single incident. It might have begun at the 2011 All-Star post-game press conference. I don’t remember the question Whitlock asked but it was stupid and I can only conclude Kobe must have felt the same way by his response. He said; “I not going to answer that-----next question?” Since that time it seems every opportunity to slam Kobe he takes it, he event invents stuff to provide validation for his view.  You might remember I once wrote Whitlock has strange reasoning behind his hatred, he said something similar to this.  "I don't won't Bryant to get his 6th ring, I want fans to view Magic Johnson as the all-time greatest Laker."  It is totally stupid to write about a personal issue he has no control over regarding Bryant.  Fans are short-sighted, they only have the true ability to see in front of them.  Bryant is on the court currently not Kobe.  Laker fans realize what Magic accomplished but you really think they care what Whitlock thinks?

Unrealized expectations
I admit I probably was expecting too much! I had an opportunity to see Shabazz Muhammad play in high school I was anxious to see his first game. I wasn’t expecting him in the starting lineup because the NCAA investigation had kept him off the floor while teammates were allowed to play. Muhammad a 6-6 shooting guard was the number one (or two) prospect in the Class of 2012. I haven’t read reports of the game however Muhammad was probably 1. nervous and 2. coming off a series of injuries caused him to start slowly as he was inserted as a sub into the game. Georgetown unranked took UCLA rated number 11 to the woodshed, they spanked them 78-70. As for Muhammad after a slow start he finished the game with 15 points, he shot 5 for 10 from the floor. Georgetown’s Otto Porter had an outstanding game with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Porter’s from Sikeston (MO) about 150 miles south of St. Louis. NOTE: Dickey V. during the telecast said “there needs to be a commissioner of college sports to work with the NCAA.” I’m not sure how this would work but something needs to be done. Two Indiana players have both been suspended 9 games over a monetary issue that’s 20 years old.

Excuse my rant
I’ve come to the conclusion the overwhelming majority of Laker fans are solid. Like me they love the team, they are disappointed when the team loses. Then we must discuss the “Other. “ The other is the spoiled segment of fans who sit on their hands. If they attend games at Staples they arrive late and leave early. They are critical of management, the coach and a number of Laker players. Of course the criticism does not manifest itself in all three areas at the same time. This group of spoiled fans is always proposing a number of wild outlandish trades. The trades they formulate always causes me to say; “what where they thinking?”

Rick Majerus
After taking a leave of absence the coach will be unable to return. Health issues will prevent Rick Majerus from returning to the helm at St. Louis University. During his 29 years as a head coach he compiled a 517-215 record. His coaching stops include Marquette and Ball State; most probably remember him from his longest tenure position as head coach at Utah. The coaching fraternity and many fans (me included) will miss Majerus prowling the sidelines.

Jim Calhoun
Okay the good along with the bad, last week I wrote of Mizzou’s Alex Oriakhi. I indicated I didn’t see him play at UConn but read letters of compliant regarding his transfer. Now Alex is talking and he just needs to zip it, briefly he stated Jim Calhoun and the UConn coaching staff had no confidence in him. He was removed from games every time he made a mistake. He credits Frank Haith and staff for restoring his confidence. His issues at UConn might be valid but he’s in Columbia now not Storrs (CT).

Speaking of Mizzou
You must see the guy play, that’s my view of Phil “Flip” Pressey. At 5-10 or what ever I never thought of him as an NBA prospect. Perhaps that might still be the case but I’ve been witness to the growth of his game. Yesterday against the Stanford Cardinal his line read; 5 rebounds, 8 assists, 4 steals and 18 points. 35 minutes on the court for this smallish point guard only 3 turnovers.

You know the story
Thought it worth mentioning the 138 point game of Jack Taylor. Taylor of Grinnel College (IA) Division III school broke the collegiate scoring record. His team beat Faith Baptist Bible 179-104. My only question who was guarding; I meant to say watching Taylor?

Knicks
Whoever is crown basketball King of New York City might be concluded early? The Nets were making loud noises all last spring and summer on their move to Brooklyn. They said they would become New York’s basketball team. The Nets have arrived was the prevailing view. Not so said Knicks season ticket holder Spike Lee, in addition this resident of Brooklyn pledged his allegiance to the Knicks. Based on early season play it appears the Knicks remain supreme and the mark for good basket in The Big Apple. As this is written the Nets are 6-4 which is certainly noteworthy. On the other hand the team across the East River at 4 Penn Plaza is 8-2. The teams are one, two in the Atlantic Conference.  Their November 1 match scheduled at Barclays was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy, circle November 26 for the first Battle of New York.

What’s the deal?
Another Pau Gasol trade story is making the rounds. I’m a little unsure what folks expect of this 32-year old talent. In the reported trade the Lakers will trade Gasol for the Hawks Josh Smith. Those who might be unfamiliar with Smith he’s a 26-year old power forward and talented. I haven’t seen Smith play enough to determine if he’d actually be an upgrade over Gasol. The problem (at least with the Lakers) has been “he’s not tough enough. “ I’m not going to bother with checking numbers because they often fail to provide a true picture. I’m going to keep an eye on both players leading up to the trade deadline to determine in my mind if a trade is viable.

Another arena on the horizon
You might have thought with the Barclays Center complete and ready for action it would be the last arena story written---but wait there’s more. In addition to a developing story in Seattle there is a story in San Francisco. The Warriors have moved to the next stage, that point you begin hiring. They have signed the architectural firms of Snohetta and AECOM to design the planned 18,000 arena. The site location will be Piers 30-32 in sight of the Bay Bridge. According to a poll conducted by the San Francisco Examiner an overwhelming number of people are in favor of the project. What I discovered most interesting many favorable votes came from the East Bay which includes Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Warrior ownership is serious; they intend to move across the bay as soon as the lease expires at Oracle. The other issue is a name change; I cannot imagine retaining the name Golden State. The team arrived from Philadelphia and was re-named the San Francisco Warriors.

This is interesting
When ever I come across those unusual basketball stories I love to share them with you. The name Dion Overstreet Jr. is probably unknown to most of you it was for me. Overstreet is a 5-9 point guard who played two seasons at Edmonds Community College in Washington. Overstreet is attending the University of Washington and is a walk-on candidate for the basketball team however that’s not the end of the story. Overstreet is a former child actor; he appeared in commercials as a seven year old and later had roles on TV shows Moesha, The Bernie Mac Show; Newsradio and Malcom in the Middle.

He certainly isn’t the first actor/baller, that honor might go to the late Chuck Conners. Conners played The Rifleman a ‘50’s cowboy television series. Continuing to pop up on television now and then is Mike Warren; Mike was a point guard at UCLA in the ’60’s along with teammate Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul Jabbar). Warren was a regular on the ‘70’s police series Hill Street Blues. Laker Rick Fox walked off the court at Staples Center into the office of an acting coach; Fox has had several movie and television roles since his retirement. Wilt Chamberlain had a role in a Conan the Barbarian movie, Dr. J. was cast (or miscast) in The Fish that saved Pittsburg, in my view the absolute worst basketball movie ever made. Avoid it all cost, it could prove dangerous to your health. Finally how could we forget Roger Murdock (Kareem Abdul Jabbar) as the co-pilot in the Zucker Brothers movie Airplane?

What’s with Magic?
Skirball Cultural Center for his self-named foundation. "He hasn't done a great job yet, but he's done a good job. If they get Dwight Howard, then he's done a great job.”
The quote is from a Los Angeles Times story last summer. It appears Magic Johnson seems to forget his statements at times. Magic Johnson the player will remain an all-time favorite for me. Magic Johnson the commentator needs to stick a sock in his mouth. He’s at it again; I paraphrase his recent twitter statement. “I’m in mourning because Phil Jackson wasn’t hired to coach the Lakers.” I think most of us were aware Johnson was no longer an owner having sold his shares. The 2012-13 media is either incorrect or his status with the team is only partially changed. The guide confirms he sold his share of the team but is still listed as a vice-president. Is his rant for his ESPN buddies to show them he has no allegiance to the Lakers? Magic should know better, if he has issues with Jim Buss they belong in private not in the public arena. Can you image imagine a Fortune 500 vice-president making the type of statement he made? Magic Johnson the player remains an all-time favorite, Magic Johnson vice-president I have issues. (Los Angeles Times)

Not as much a surprise this time
Most of you are to young to remember the upset. It was big news 30-years old when Division II Chaminade upset then number one Virginia. Chaminade University located in Honolulu (HI) is still a Division II school and they did it again, they upset Division I Texas 86-73.

“Big Shot”
I think we get it; Shaq doesn’t particularly like Dwight Howard. He pronounced Brook Lopez the best center in the NBA since he retired. He claims Lopez is a back to the basket center which there are few of those types of centers in today’s NBA. That fact we might all agree, the other statement is called into question by Robert “Big Shot” Horry. Horry now working for TWC Sportsnet was asked for a response. Horry said; “Howard is the best in the NBA, Lopez might be the third best center on the floor tonight. Pau Gasol might be a better center than Lopez.” I am real curious how Shaq might respond to Horry’s statement.

Did you hear this?

Remember last summer I argued Andrew Bynum was a good as Dwight Howard? Last summer I said Bynum’s offensive skill was superior and he certainly was a better at the free-throw line than Howard. The other negative Howard would be returning to the basketball court after off season back surgery.  Initial reports indicated Howard wouldn’t play until December or perhaps January. Interesting in the fact Bynum is the player whose appearance has been delayed. Howard (not quite 100%) played late in the pre-season and began the regular season as an active player. Bynum is yet to lace up his basketball shoes for the first time. In addition his other knee is acting up now, the latest story Bynum might not play until January. He says that was the plan all along which causes me to ask what does he mean?

Interesting
Shabazz Muhammad is eligible to play, his punishment repaying $1,600 in benefits and sitting out UCLA’s first three games. Both are complete and he will be in the lineup for the game tonight against Georgetown. I’m almost unsure if it was worth the effort for UCLA to appeal the eligibility issue. I foresee the NBA in this youngster future, if he’s enrolled in August of 2013 I for one will certainly be shocked. If he has a shaky freshman year (which I doubt) he’s headed for the NBA. I’m not criticizing the player I’m critical of today’s state of affairs. The NBA and NCAA should sit down and seriously discuss the one n done subject.

Weber State
Where in the world is Waldo might be replaced by where in the world is Weber State? The answer is Ogden Utah 40+ miles north of Salt Lake City. Weber State is a member of the Big Sky Conference; conference rivals include Montana State and Northern Arizona. Damian Lillard was impressive for the Blazers during the NBA Summer League however like most I remained cautious, I wanted to see how he played against the “big boys."  So far this 6-3 195 pound point guard has validated the Blazers selecting him as the 6th pick in the 2012 draft.  Checking his numbers Lillard’s field goal percentage appears to be the only negative. Given time we could assume his field goal percentage will improve as he makes adjustments to his NBA game. If Lillard maintains his 18.6 ppg and 7.2 assists per game numbers we might attach Rookie of the Year behind his name.

Bits n Pieces
Seeing Dwight Howard exit the team bus in horn rim glasses, vest and bow tie my first thought, “a 6-11 Steve Urkel.”

Coach Monty Williams confused me and I’m sure others. Williams complained loudly regarding the NBA policy which forced Anthony Davis to the sidelines. Davis had suffered a concussion and the new rule is you must be medically cleared to play. You would think Williams was aware of the NFL legal issues regarding player concussions.

Did the Knicks know something we didn’t? This is probably not fair of me, the season is still young. Have you checked out Jeremy Lin’s numbers with the Rockets? As of November 16 he’s 10.9 ppg 35.3% shooting, the only good his assists numbers are good, he’s at 6.1 assists per game.

In surprising news Kentucky’s Class of 2013 recruits was rated number one in the nation for the umpteenth time. I have no idea how Coach Cal does it but he and Kentucky have become an even greater magnet for Top 25 high school players.

I never had an opportunity to see 6-9 255 pound Alex Oriakhi play during his tenure at UConn. I read a number of negative emails (I would assume from UConn fans) regarding Oriakhi. A number of us were what type of player Haith and Mizzou was receiving. It’s still early but so far I’m pleased at what I see; he hit’s the boards consistently and when called on can score.

Surprise, surprise

Are the Knicks for real, that question is yet to be answered.  One fact that’s clear the Knicks are now 6-0 after beating the Spurs 104-100. Even more telling they beat the Spurs in San Antonio. As for the other New York team the Nets managed to sneak by the Celtics (at home) 102-97.

Mike D’Antoni
I goofed; I wrote a story on Laker coach Mike D’Antoni and accidentally deleted a portion. Rather than try to add the portion I’d written and deleted below is a new story. Most of Lakerland was disappointed as was I, we expected Phil Jackson to be hired. I refuse to go into all the rumors circulating because none can be confirmed. Many in the media appear to have superior abilities than management of most teams. I say Stephan A. Smith and others if you know so much why are you writing or verbalizing about the sport? You should be in somebody’s front office decision making. The only sure fact D’Antoni is the coach and should be over the next 3-years. I had reservations, D’Antoni has an offensive mind (Kobe quote) so that wasn’t my concern. His Suns and Knick teams certainly were not noted for their defensive. Kobe quote again, “all the years under Phil we ran maybe 3 defensive sets.”

Dwight Howard has been 3-time defensive player of the year and 4-time first team selection. Kobe is 34 but he’s been selected All-Defensive first team 9 times and a 3-time second team selection. As for Metta World Peace he too has slowed at age 33, his resume is noteworthy too. Peace’s like Howard was once selected Defensive Player of the Year; in addition he’s been a first team selection twice, second team. Howard, Bryant and Peace play defense, will they quit under D’Antoni? The key all three plus Nash have a D’Antoni connection in the past. Phil Jackson’s credentials speak loud and clear no doubt but ponder this. Kobe, Gasol and Metta are the only Lakers with triangle experience we’ve witnessed the problems already with implementing the Princeton offense. This is a win now (or next year scenario); they don’t have time to teach. D’Antoni’s read and react type of offense is far easier for all. Could this hire be “Mike Brown” part deux, maybe but I don’t think so. We know for sure assistant coaches won’t be diagramming plays to run in crunch time.

Carolina
My buddy Skip (a Tarheel grad) pointed out a fact I failed to realize. During the course of our conversation Skip informed me “Laker Antwan Jamison (former Tarheel) has scored 19,253 points in the NBA.” My response went something like; “boy I sure didn’t realize that.” I remember he and teammate Vince Carter at North Carolina, at the time I thought Jamison was the superior athlete. Once Carter and Jamison arrived in the NBA it was a far different story. Carter’s NBA aerial act caused TNT analyst Kenny Smith to dub him “half-man half-amazing.” Sometime ago Carter’s high wire act left him, sure he’s still in the NBA but no longer spectacular. Steady, “low-flyer” Antwan Jamison’s career has certainly been as good as his former Carolina teammate. Depending on your view in some circles Jamison may have exceeded Carter.

Another Iverson
I had written earlier on Kuran Iverson a cousin of former NBA player Allen Iverson. Cousin is much taller and heavier than his diminutive relative at 6-8 and 200 pounds. This Iverson is awarded 4-stars by ESPN 100 and is the number 27 prospect in the Class of 2013. He’s from Windsor (CT) and attends Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro (VA). Fishburne is a military boarding school grade 7-12. Iverson had received offers from Florida and Memphis but verbally committed to Memphis.

Who signs their letter of intent?

The early signing period begins today and runs through November 21. High school prospects can sign letters of intent during this time-frame. Many will probably chose the regular signing period which runs from April 17 to May 15. A prospect can declare any time but can only sign a letter of intent during the two periods listed.

I missed the Spurs

Recently I discussed jerseys of NBA teams; I mentioned the Celtics, Lakers and Knicks had made very little change to their uniforms over the years. I overlooked a team, I missed the Spurs. The franchise is certainly not as old as those mentioned however they have worn the same uniform combination since the franchise was founded as the Dallas Chaparrals in 1967. Bet many of you didn’t realize the Spurs were not always the Spurs and didn’t always call San Antonio home. White home uniforms with black lettering and road black jerseys with white lettering. But hold just a moment; recently the Spurs front office announced an alternate gray jersey with black lettering. An unusual aspect the front of the uniforms contains only the Spurs logo (over the heart) and the players’ number. No San Antonio or Spurs anywhere in sight on the jersey interesting.

I’m caught up in the hype too

Writing a story for CNBC Brian Schactman says at a point; “The New Jersey Nets were never cool. The BROOKLYN Nets are.” I hope this isn’t considered a slap at New Jersey and Newark on my part that’s not the intent, why have the Nets become cool? Brett Yormack Nets CEO indicates “we are closing in on 11,000 season ticket sales, an  all-time high for this franchise."  On the court the Nets haven’t been very successful over the last several years however it’s got to be more than that. The other New York basketball team hasn’t been very successful either until recently. Television cameras don’t allow you a complete view of MSG but the building almost always seemed full.

For the most part the same statement could not be made for Prudential Center and the Izod Center before that. Should we speculate the Jay-Z factor might enter into the Nets becoming cool? Brooklyn is certainly nearer the media center of Manhattan than Newark however that shouldn’t be that big a big right? The specter of the Brooklyn Dodgers still reins over this borough despite it was 1957 when the Dodgers headed west to Los Angeles. I read a of note for many of you, the writer claimed one of the flagpoles from Ebbets Field (former Dodger ballpark) had been located, it’s been erected at Barclays Center. If this story is true maybe a long-gone baseball team might be impacting the present day basketball team. There is one fact that’s unmistakable; I’m sure its media driven. Haven’t you seen more folks with Brooklyn Nets apparel than you ever saw sporting New Jersey Nets gear?

He’s going to be good

I first became acquainted with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist two years ago. I’d mentioned the HBO documentary Prayer for a Perfect Season. The documentary focused on the 2010-11 season of St. Anthony’s High School in Elizabeth New Jersey. In addition MKG was introduced to us as the heart and soul of the team. This 6-7 232 pound small forward played one year at Kentucky and was drafted by the Bobcats in the 2012 draft. Saturday I watched him drop 25 points on the Mavs and grab 12 rebounds as the Cats beat them in overtime 101-97. The ceiling is unlimited for this basketball talent

Boy am I old

The name Christian Laettner was mentioned to Kentucky frosh Willie Cauley-Stein.
Cauley-Stein indicated he wasn’t familiar with the name. Interesting only us old-timers
remember the Laettner shot with 2.1 seconds remaining in a 1992 overtime NCAA tourney game. The shot allowed Duke to advance and Kentucky to be eliminated.  I guess Cauley-Stein has an excuse, he's a youngster.

I know it’s a waste of time but I’m gonna rant anyway

Misplaced terminology is similar to a person dragging their finger nails across a blackboard. To me that is one of the all-time worst sounds in recorded history. A story in College Basketball Talk was just that, the story was titled; “Non-BCS Schools quietly land impact players for ‘13.” The bothersome part for me the fact football terminology was used to explain the schools involved. South Dakota State, UNC-Greensboro and Murray State certainly are not large in comparison to the UCLA’s and the Kentucky’s but don’t use football teams to describe them. I had to look up BCS to gain a full explanation, it reads; “the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) is a selection system that creates five bowl match-ups involving ten of the top ranked teams in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), including an opportunity for the top two to compete in the BCS National Championship Game.” No place in what you read is there any indication of a basketball connection. I know this concern will fall on deaf ears because many in the media are lazy. (BCS definition; wikipedia)

If you’ve ever been seriously injured you should have first-hand knowledge

The injury to the Bulls Derrick Rose was devastating last season. A left ACL tear and later surgery to repair it, the severity certainly meant he’d miss the 2012-13 season. Several weeks ago it was reported Rose was returning to action in March of 2013. Former point guard Tim Hardaway had suffered a similar injury during his playing days, his advice to Rose; “shut it down for the season. “ Hardaway is stating why rush back, this type of injure requires a full year to heal. Two issues, number one I have no medical knowledge beyond the basics. Number two 2012 Hall of Fame inductee Ralph Sampson detailed how his haste to return from an injury likely shortened his career. Rose is probably upset with the prospect of missing a season of basketball. Missing a season might possibly extend his playing career.

To set the record straight I think Mike D’Antoni is a good guy and a good coach. Steve Nash certainly had a great deal of success playing for D’Antoni at Phoenix. My issue with the coach his teams (Suns and Knicks) play great offensive basketball but very little defense. Reports indicate D’Antoni is the choice, as a fan I hope this is not a Mike Brown repeat.

10-9-8-7, the countdown has begun. The countdown is for us to read the first Jason Whitlock column blaming Kobe Bryant for Mike Brown’s firing. It’s Sunday evening as I write so I guess I might be a little early. If Whitlock doesn’t write the story I will be shocked twice. Shocked the story wasn't written and I was wrong about him.

Friday evening Barclays Center served as host for its first collegiate game. Morehead State beat LIU-Brooklyn 77-74. The second game of the double-header saw Maryland and Kentucky play. The Kentucky Wildcats squeaked by the Maryland Terrapins 72-69.

The Marquette-Ohio State game scheduled for Friday was cancelled. The game was to be played aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Yorktown in a tribute to Veterans Day. Excessive moisture on the court forced the cancellation. Last year it was a novelty, playing a game outdoors and on an aircraft carrier. Carriers sit on the water and moisture is a problem. To honor the military and veterans why not play the game as was done in Germany. UConn beat Michigan State 66-62 at Ramstein Air Force Base Germany. The game was played in an aircraft hanger.

Shabazz Muhammad might arrive in the NBA without sitting foot on a college court. Muhammad the number one prospect in the Class of 2012 was declared ineligible for UCLA’s first game. Muhammad was reported to have received improper benefits while in high school, word is he might be disqualified for the season.

Phil Pressey’s season opening game was noteworthy. Mizzou didn’t play particularly well as they topped SIU-Edwardsville 83-69. Point guard Pressey was 7 for 12 from the floor with 19 points but running the teams offense is his forte. He dished out 9 assists and snatched 5 rebounds with 1 steal. He committed only 2 turnovers in 35 minutes of game action.

I know last nights game was against the Kings but Laker Dwight Howard’s line score looked good. 23 points, 18 rebounds with 3 blocked shots 3 assists and 2 steals. You said he was playing at 80%.

SPECIAL EDITION

The move is not a real surprise
The Lakers fired Mike Brown after the team started the season 1-4. History says I wanted Brian Shaw after Phil Jackson. The word was Jim Buss didn’t, Buss wanted a departure from the Jackson philosophy of basketball. He thought Shaw might be a Jackson clone and no real change. So he hired Mike Brown, hired Brown without any input from Kobe Bryant. There are several who say “Buss is the owner why is it necessary to consult Bryant?” My answer you are correct however the star athlete should have at least been given a heads-up. I watched from a distance as Mike Brown was hired to coach the Cavs. His was to lead LeBron and crew to an NBA Championship. Whether it was his fault or not he never managed to guide the Cavs to the height owner Dan Gilbert and fans expected. We know of course what eventually occurred in Cleveland Brown was terminated. Again I wasn’t pleased with the Brown hiring initially but made the assumption Laker management knew what they were doing. In a labor shortened season they still made the playoffs but were eliminated by the Thunder. Team upgrades were required and Mitch Kupchak met with much success over the summer.

The acquisition of Steve Nash and Dwight Howard many Laker fans were looking forward to a championship season. Then the Princeton offense was brought to training camp, the Kings ran it at one time when they were really good. There was a question in the back of my mind---why? You have one of the best distributors in the game with Steve Nash why was the Princeton necessary? Again I went along with the coach assuming he was aware of the risks and rewards. Why did his firing come so early, I made what appeared to be excuses, new offense new teammates. It’s clear the 0-8 preseason followed by a 1-4 regular season start probably sealed Mike Brown’s fate. With the blockbuster summer moves Laker fans expectations went from sky high to “what’s wrong with this team?” The team will probably operate with an interim coach the balance of the season but hire a permanent coach after the season. Those I like, Phil Jackson, Jerry Sloan and Brian Shaw. My exclude list for now only contains one name, Mike (no defense) D ‘Antoni.

Betcha didn’t know

Despite what you might think Laker jerseys have not always been purple and gold. In 1960 at the time the team arrived in Los Angeles there was little change from those worn previously in Minneapolis. The road jerseys were white with blue lettering and road jerseys blue with white lettering. Both versions read Los Angeles across the front rather than the more familiar Lakers. They wore this jersey from 1960 through the 1966 season. In the fall of 1966 the team adopted purple jerseys for the road and gold for home. The jersey has been modified but only slightly since the color change was initiated. Early in 2002 the team adopted an alternative jersey. The team began wearing a white jersey for home games, a tribute to long-time broadcaster Chick Hearn. Hearn broadcast Laker games from 1961 through the 2002 season. The white jersey was designed by vice-president Jeannie Buss.

Did you read Kobe Bryant says he thinks he can play at age 40, sound crazy? Maybe if anybody could play at that age it would be him. I‘ve often said if only Shaq had Kobe‘s work ethic he‘d probably still be playing.

He might be gone; Charles Barkley claims he wants to try another venture. He’s tired of “Inside the NBA. “ With Barkley we are never sure what he’s going to do. Remember him running for Governor of Alabama, later we discovered he wasn’t registered to vote.

The surprise team so far in this young NBA season is not the 4-0 Spurs. Despite the flame out in the playoffs they are good as Tim Duncan’s back. The AARP Knicks are 3-0, no Amar’e, no matter they look good. Raymond Felton and old man Jason Kidd have proven to be adequate replacements for last years point guard. What was his name, can’t remember it? Oh ya it was Jeremy Lin, wonder where he went?

One of the many programs I promised myself I would follow this year is Southern Methodist University. I’m curious for several reasons, Larry Brown begged and pleaded to return to coaching at age 72. Brown has more basketball knowledge in his little finger than I do my entire body, that‘s not the issue. Will Brown be patient enough and at age 72 can he communicate with this generations athletes?

He doesn’t like it but we should understand why. The Lakers Dwight Howard is not pleased the center position’s been eliminated from the NBA ballot. Off the top of my head the 76ers Andrew Bynum might be the only true center in the NBA. A classic back to the basket guy, I can’t even make that statement about Howard as talented as I think he is.

I admit North Carolina State has not been on my radar until this year. Sure, once upon a time they won an NCAA Championship but that was a long time ago. it seems they always play second fiddle to North Carolina and Duke. No more, several pre-season polls have them ranked above both their arch rivals.

You might remember I mentioned Doug Gottlieb of CBS Sports picked Mizzou to win the SEC crown. I mentioned I was unsure how he came to this conclusion however he’s not the only one. Two ESPN scribes who also cover college basketball picked Mizzou to win the SEC.  You must first play the game but Mizzou might be better than I first thought.

Depends on where you sit

The first game scheduled for Barclays Center was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. The inaugural game was played two days later on Saturday. Welcome to Brooklyn certainly was the theme. Former Dodger players were invited to a pre-game ceremony. This was in keeping with the “Back to Brooklyn” theme. During points of the game the television camera would focus on Nets majority owner Mikhail Prokhorov or minority owner Jay-Z. Prokhorov was seated in a sky box, Jay-Z courtside seats on the floor. I’m sure the Jay-Z seats would certainly range in the neighborhood of $1,000 and more. It’s my belief Prokhorov probably had a better view of the game than Jay-Z. Back in the day at a time the Kings home was Kansas City I often purchased end zone tickets three to four rows from the floor. I would note at various times officials or players could and would block my view of the action. Seats in the middle portion of the grandstand half way to the top provided me the best unobstructed view.

They just might have an advantage

Darko Milicic all 7 feet of him remains in the NBA; he became an amnesty victim of the Wolves. He could have sought opportunities in Europe he chose to remain here; Milcic signed a 1-year contract with the Celtics. He’s had a checkered NBA career but his role might be somewhat different with the Celtics. The stretch run last season had 6-11 Kevin Garnett playing the bulk of the minutes at center. In addition to Milcic the Celtics drafted 7 foot Fab Melo from Syracuse and they added veteran center Jason Collins. The Heat have Chris Bosh at the five or center position, he’s backed up by Joel Hamilton and Josh Harrelson. The Heat has the advantage at the small forward the Celtics at the power forward. The Celtics at the point over the Heat at the point guard. The Celtics have the advantage over the Heat at the center position in talent and number. The belief might be “your better than us at several positions but we are going to pound you down low.” We shall see how this develops over the course of the season and into the playoffs.

A reminder

Information update for many who tend to forget history. At one stage during the 2010-11 season the Heat was 9-8? Playing barely above .500 with a lineup of LeBron, Wade and Bosh. Of course you remember how they finished don’t you? The team eventually jelled and even managed to later play for the NBA Championship that year. It’s worth remembering the slow start of the team as they attempted to adjust play as a unit. Does this story sound familiar for another NBA team?

I wish someone could explain this

One of the two highly touted Class of 2012 athletes has been cleared to play. UCLA announced 6-9 shooting guard Kyle Anderson and Rivals #3 is eligible to play. The case for his 6-6 teammate Shabazz Muhammad’s (Rivals #1) is still open. Anderson was under investigation due to alleged ties to an NBA agent. Muhammad’s story is essentially the same questions regarding unauthorized travel among other issues. I think we all understand amateur versus professional status. The issue requiring clarification for us, how can an athlete enroll in August and then not be cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse on November 1? This is not the first incident of a similar nature, it probably will be repeated until the NCAA gets its act in order.

Stop me if you heard this

I'm really joking; those of you in Boston or Miami might have been aware earlier than me. Often time even with free agent signings I don’t crunch the numbers. I don’t do it for a number of reasons, the chief reason we are not privy to the contract decision making, and we have no idea the basis for player A earning more than player B. The Heat signing Ray Allen surprised me; I’m even more surprised at the caw-caw flying back and forth between Allen, Rondo, Garnett and occasionally Doc Rivers. Those of us on the outside never have the true picture but this is the circulated report. This one flew right past me at the time, I just plain missed it. The Heat was reported to have signed Allen to a 3-year contract at $9 million a year. Prior to Allen signing with the Heat his former team was reported to have offered him a 2-year contract at $12 million a year.

Is it the same thing?

Former ESPN and NBA TV broadcaster Andre Aldridge would often use the term. Jason Jackson current Heat broadcaster also used it. Both often refer to the NBA as “The Association.” Ever wondered why the NBA is an association while the NFL, MLB and NHL were leagues? It might have been as simple as the parties coming together. Two “leagues” who became one, the National Basketball League was founded in 1937 while the Basketball Association of America begun in 1946. A definition in Dictionary.com states “the act of associating or state of being associated.” These two would merge in 1949 to become the National Basketball Association. Historical: Although the National Basketball League might have been considered minor league it eclipsed baseball in one aspect. A significant number of athletes were in military service due to WW II. Two teams signed African-American players years prior to Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball. (Wikipedia)

The NBA has new officials

Annually the NBA adds officials to its roster, the additions are due mainly to retirement although a few are terminated due to poor performance. A number might find that statement difficult to believe but the league office grades officials and a year-end assessment is completed. Those missing the mark are not invited back to officiate the following season. Several new officials have been added this season among the new officials is Lauren Holtkamp and Brenda Pantoja. We can’t consider this a historical event, after all Holtkamp and Pantoja are not the first. The NBA hired its first female officials in 1997, Violet Palmer and Dee Kanter began officiating that year. Palmer remained the only female official until last Friday when Holtkamp began her officiating duties. Last night Brenda Pantoja became the third (fourth historically) to officiate an NBA game as she worked the Hawks-Thunder game. Despite my critical comments at times regarding the NBA they should be applauded. The NBA continues to be the most diverse professional league in the nation. David Stern certainly deserves a degree of credit for the hiring practices of the NBA.

Have you seen it

It appears Blake Griffin can poke fun at Blake Griffin. Have you seen one of his latest Kia commercials? Allow me to set the stage if you haven’t seen the commercial. It begins with Griffin entering his Kia Optima and says “info-tainment system program 1995 junk box.” In a manner similar to those Back to the Future movies he arrives in 2012. Mini-me Blake Griffin is hanging on the basketball rim. Mini-me Griffin says; “who are you?” 2012 Griffin says “I’m you from the future.”  10-year old Griffin "is that your spaceship?”  Future Griffin explains "it’s my Kia Optima," mini-me inquires “is there anything else you can tell me about the future?” 2012 Griffin says; “practice your free throws-----a lot” as he shoots the ball toward the basket and it becomes stuck between the backboard and the goal, funny.

Did you know pigs can fly?

Chris Paul is now claiming he preferred the Clippers over the Lakers. He said “they (Clippers) have better parts and winning with the Clippers would be legendary. There’s no doubt that the Clippers had some promising pieces to build around with Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, Caron Butler, Eric Bledsoe and Chauncey Billups in the fold, but saying that he’d rather land with a franchise that has never been an NBA title contender over one that has won 16 championships doesn’t make much sense.” Allow me to explore Paul’s statement, have you ever heard of a player desiring to be traded to the Clippers? Have the Clippers turned a corner on player development, only time will answer that question. In past years a number of talented players have left the Clippers once they became free agents. In the past owner Donald Sterling has been notoriously stingy with the dollars, has he turned over a new leaf in an effort to retain players?  He ends the interview by stating he “is still upset about Pau Gasol patting him on the head."  Finally “Stephen Curry Calls Nate Robinson and Chris Paul NBA’s Biggest Trash-Talkers”   (lakersnation, tbl & slamonline.come)

State by State

You’ve heard the argument in the past the ACC says it’s stronger than the Big East. The Big XII says hold on there what about us? The Big 10 also wants to lay claim as well. Rather than conference how about state by state account, this way we do away with conference affiliations? I saw a map of the U.S. indicating the number of schools regardless of conference affiliation in 2012. Leading the way with 4+ schools were; California, North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio and New York. Texas, Kansas, Florida, Tennessee, Virginia, Indiana and Michigan each had 3 schools in the field. There were 19 states with a 0, not one school in the state qualified for the field of 64. We could conclude (certainly not scientifically) states with basketball history qualified the most schools, Kentucky and North Carolina would be an example. Somewhat a surprise the State of Illinois failed to qualify any of its Division I schools.

IT'S OFFICIALLY PANIC TIME!!!!

Notice the headline is in bold print and upper case letters. This is serious, after the Wednesday night loss the Lakers are 0-2. Panic runs amok in Lakerland, "fire Mike Brown; bench Pau Gasol or somebody.  They need to trade Blake or Duhon and insert 2nd year man Darius Morris."  I hope you realize I'm not serious, am I concerned?  Of course I am however this new and improved Laker team is a work in progress!  If this appears an excuse so be it.  I see several reasons for the slow start.  A new offense (Princeton).  In addition there are 7 players (2) starters who wore another NBA or college jersey last year.  The bench lacks continuity at this point.  IF there is no change by the middle to late November it is time for adjustments.  Laker fans don't allow sports media types to lure you into believing "the sky is falling."

I’ve had a problem with him for years
Friends are aware I’ve had a long-time feud with Jason Whitlock of Fox Sports.com. I’m well pleased somebody finally called him out, he’s skated by long enough. Hope the link below works for you.

Bits n Pieces
I was pleased Mizzou's Kim English a 2nd round draft choice gained a roster spot with the Pistons.  I didn't subscribe to NBA League Pass so I guess it's box scores for me.  Thomas Robinson secured a roster spot with the Kings as did Tyshawn Taylor with the Nets. You might remember both played at Kansas last year,

It was only an exhibition game but I was anxious to see Mizzou game against Northwest Missouri State. I like transfers Keion Bell, Earnest Ross and Alex Oriakhi. Good to see Laurence Bowers back on the court again, the 6-9 Bowers was injured all last season.

Is Delonte West NBA history? He was suspended twice during training camp. The Mavs have now released him and he’s attempting to latch on with another team.

No guarantee he remains all-season but “Mr. Irrelevant” Robert Sacre made the cut. Center Sacre the 60th and last player drafted in the 2012 NBA Draft gained a spot on the Lakers roster.

“One game fails to make a season.” New Rocket James Harden made quite a splash in his debut. 37 points, 12 assists and 6 rebounds---the Thunder might “fear the beard” now.

Interesting observation from him
Mavs owner Mark Cuban is not the person we perceive. Despite what he desires us to think he’s just as envious as the next person. Wednesdays ESPN.com headline read; “Cuban hopes Lakers will suck.” Of course he clarifies the statement by saying “and every other team.” He goes on to repeat his earlier statements about the Lakers acquiring Karl Malone and Gary Payton and the lack of success. I guess he should feel vindicated since his Mavs beat my Lakers.  "You should be real careful wishing ill on someone (or something); it just might come back and bite you in the butt!”
