Basketball from a fans perspective

Not the outcome expected
As NBA fans we become spoiled, we witnessed talent rich 2014 and 2015 NBA Drafts. The jury is still out especially the most recent draft although the belief is there is talent there. I’m sure many believed the 2000 draft was also talented, that’s not always the case I believe the 2000 NBA Draft may have been the worst in NBA history. On reading my last sentence your first thought is “He’s being far too critical. “ Okay allow me to point out a number of the picks from that draft. Kenyon Martin appeared to have all the tools while at Cincinnati thus he would go on to be the number one pick in 2000 by the Nets. Martin announced his retirement over the summer as for his NBA career; he never reached the level projected for him as a number one. He wasn’t a terrible player but he wasn’t that good either as he managed to play for five different teams during his NBA career.

I know you remember the second pick Stromile Swift from LSU don‘t you? Before he left the NBA in 2009 his highest scoring average was 11.8 ppg. The fifth pick that year might be the best of the bunch Florida’s Mike Miller drafted by the Magic. Miller was recently traded from the Cavs to the Blazers and they would become his 8th team (he‘s now with the Nuggets). Hedo Türko
ğlu also remaining active had several successful seasons mostly for the Kings who chose him with the number 16 pick. The 2000 draft consisted of players who were valuable reserves but that‘s about all, without further research I’m unsure if any players in that draft ever appeared in an All-Star game. What’s so amazing to me I find it difficult NBA teams could add 58 players in that year and not one turned into an All Pro player. You might think I being too mean-spirited that‘s not the case just check out the 2000 draft for yourself don’t just take my word.

Rock theme
Unless you are a fan of rock music the tune titled Sirius might be unfamiliar to you. It’s a 1 minute 54 second instrumental featured in the Eye in the Sky album by the Alan Parsons Project. The album released in 1982 might be identified as much as the intro theme for Chicago Bulls home games. It came into usage during the Michael Jordan era but has continued to be used to the present time. Sirius has been used by a number of other sports teams throughout the nation. Although not attached to any team or sport the musical group Queen must be heard most often at sports events.

We Will Rock You, Another One Bit’s the Dust, We Are the Champions recorded in the late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s are often heard to this day. There are others, Celebration by Kool and the Gang usually at the end of a tough series. We have Jump Around by House of Pain and Jump by the Pointer Sisters at the time there is jump ball to be decided. How about Start Me Up by the Rolling Stones or the Black Eyed Peas Lets Get It Started. There are other artists and songs not included but just wanted to give you an idea how crowds at sports events are often pumped up before, during and after the game.

Whole lotta hatin’
I wanted to ensure I repeated the quote exactly as stated. “The Lakers are the fourth best team in California. They lucky the Sparks ain’t playing they be the fifth.” The quote was the articulate Charles Barkley TNT broadcaster and former NBA player. Okay Charles we get it you hate the Lakers, how long have you had this condition? I ask the question because at least the last two years the Lakers have not been playoff relevant. Why not focus on those teams like the Warriors, Cavs or even Spurs. Baring injuries those teams (and others) are playoff bound. You have a perfect seat on the sidelines talkin’, talkin’, talkin’ and talkin’. Never mind if you are correct because the audience has little opportunity to call you out when wrong. I’m calling you out remember one of your more infamous quotes regarding Yao Ming? Most scouts predicted Yao would be a success in the NBA although they had no idea of his ceiling.

Well for Charles it was a different story, during a 2002 TNT broadcast he informed Kenny Smith; “I’ll kiss his (your) ____ if Yao Ming scored 19 points in a game.” Of course Yao Ming would go on to score 9,247 pts (19.0) and in 2006-07 scored 25 points a game for the Rockets. Injuries shortened his career to but 9 years but they certainly were good. One more for good measure this from last year’s playoffs; “They’ve (Warriors) had a terrific season. But I don’t like jump-shooting teams. I don’t think you can make enough jumpers to win four series in a row. I’ve said that for 25 years, not just now. I think you physically manhandle them inside.” I could probably locate several more infamous statements by Barkley but for me the one regarding Yao stands out. It seems to me Barkley expends a great deal of oxygen discussing a team (Lakers) he obviously hates.

On the sidelines
Big name coaches will have their assistants in charge of the team. As you are aware the off-season saw well known names forced to the sidelines by the NCAA. Jim Boeheim will view nine Syracuse games from the locker room or his home. We are not exactly sure if is permitted on campus but you get the idea. Same for Larry Brown at SMU as his assistant will handle coaching duties for nine games too. As this is written a cloud continues to hang over Louisville’s Rick Pitino, the issues been discussed at length. As for Roy Williams at North Carolina a great deal of “smoke” rose regarding bogus classes at the school.

To date there’s been no confirmed “fire”. Consider this fact the coaches mentioned have long tenure at their school or in the case of Brown a long coaching career. I’m borrowing this statement from an analyst; “It’s a shame these kinds of events have come to the surface near the end of their coaching careers.” Two years ago the NCAA forced former Mizzou Coach Frank Haith to the sidelines for a number of games. Although I wasn’t pleased I accepted it the NCAA is the only governing body in place. Rarely does the university impose penalties on itself. Hopefully at the time the NCAA makes a decision its made in the sunlight rather than a dark backroom.

Basketball from a fans perspective

The season
The NBA tipped-off its 69th season in Atlanta, Chicago and Oakland last night. The beginning of the season is always an exciting time for fans, many believe this is the year their team turns that corner that’s eluded them. That “corner” turn could vary depending on the team. Which teams make the playoffs? Who’s going to lead the NBA in scoring or become MVP? What team will surprise and exceed the expectations of the media and its fans? As for the NBA Champion will it be a Warriors repeat or some other team awarded the crown? Those questions along with others will not be answered until June 2016.

Sad news
On Sunday Wolves management announced Flip Saunders had died of Hodgkin’s lymphoma he was 60 years old. Saunders had taken a leave of absence seeking treatment in June; the belief was he would return in time for the start of the NBA season.  Sam Mitchell assistant had been named interim head coach in anticipation of Saunders returning. Although he coached the Pistons and Wizards his name has been forever linked to the Wolves. Saunders served as Wolves coach from 1995-2005 and then coached the Pistons and later the Wizards. Saunders returned to the front office of the Wolves in 2013 and in 2014 he returned to the bench serving the duo role of President of Basketball Operations and head coach.

Good to go
Highly touted freshman Skal Labissiere has been cleared by the NCAA. If you remember the story he was enrolled at Kentucky but was not eligible to play. Questions regarding his guardian rather than grades were being investigated. If you remember the story 6-11 Labissiere is from Haiti but came to the U.S. after the tragic 2010 earthquake that prompted the loss of life and property in most parts of the nation.

It’s likely the coaching staff has spent a great deal of energy for an athlete whose libel to leave after his freshman year. I checked seven 2016 NBA Mock Draft sites and he’s listed as the number one or two on all except one. One mock has him listed as the number three pick in its draft. I hope I’m wrong for a variety of reasons I’d like to see him and Ben Simmons (LSU) remain in school but I probably am hoping for the impossible.

“Just do it”
Nike once used “Just do it” as a theme for their television and print ad commercials. The media predictions for the 2015-16 season have the Lakers missing the playoffs as for these former Lakers that’s another story. I believe it was Hall of Fame Laker Jamal Wilkes who first voiced the opinion the Lakers could make the playoffs. Wilkes statement would be affirmed by another Hall of Fame player Magic Johnson. The latest name added to the growing chorus is General Manager Mitch Kupchak. Finally Metta World Peace is the latest to affirm playoff possibility for this team. This Laker fan would love if they made the playoffs however there is more to advancing than simply stating it, they should Just do it.

NCAA Champion coaches
How many active NCAA championship coaches are there you suppose? There’s Larry Brown at SMU (Kansas), Louisville’s Rick Pitino, Roy Williams North Carolina. Also in the number are Coach K. Duke, Kevin Ollie UConn, Tom Izzo Michigan State, Jim Boeheim Syracuse, John Calipari Kentucky and Bill Self Kansas. We can’t count Billy Donovan who is a two-time winner; Donovan is now in the NBA but did win back to backs while at Florida. One more coach likely missed in your count is Orlando Henry Smith nicknamed “Tubby”; he won the 1998 NCAA championship while coaching the Kentucky Wildcats. 10 active coaches with title holder on their resume and there are roughly 400 or so Division I programs throughout the nation.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Big John
Prowling the sidelines at Georgetown now belongs to John Thompson III. III’s dad the legendary John Thompson served as head coach at the school from 1966-1999, his 1984 team won the NCAA Championship. He wasn’t just a coach he also played the game, a 6-10 270 pound center drafted by the Celtics in 1964. He spent two years as Bill Russell’s caddy before heading off to begin a coaching career. Big John had a reputation; he was known to intimidate coaches, opposition players, officials and even criminals. An individual who was reported to have criminal ties befriended two Georgetown players. As word began to spread around campus Big John decided a meeting was required.

It was reported and it cannot be documented an implied threat by the coach caused this individual to end his “friendship” with the players. Word is he was never seen around the Georgetown practice facility again. Since his retirement from coaching Big John has served at times as an analyst for TNT, CBS and NBA TV. Big John is one there is no middle ground, people either hate him or love him with few forming a neutral opinion. John Thompson might not be able to sing but he could hum the line from that old Frank Sinatra tune; “I did it My Way. “ The United States Basketball Writers Association chose Big John as its first recipient of the Dean Smith award.

Bits n Pieces
I have no method of certifying this story however I believe its likely true. Rookies no matter how talented have adjustment issues making that leap from college to the NBA, makes sense to me. The question becomes why a number of folks were loudly proclaiming the “terrible” Summer League play of Laker D’Angelo Russell. Have any idea what LeBron and others shot in their first Summer League series? Check out the players and their field goal percentage.

“LeBron 36.9%
Kevin Durant 33.0%
Derrick Rose 29.4%
Steph Curry 32.5%”

MJ continues to “Just Do it” doesn’t he? The Nike brand has opened a Jordan Brand Store in Chicago and additional stores are planned for New York, Los Angeles and Toronto. Products featured are the Jumpman only Jordan’s signature line. The Jumpman logo rather than the Nike swoosh is displayed prominently throughout the store. Michael Jordan been retired how long yet continues to rack in money from his Air Jordan brand.

Louisville’s Rick Pitino says he has no intention to resign his position as head coach. He says Andre McGee should respond to the questions surrounding the program while he served on Pitino’s staff. Before I published this University of Missouri-Kansas City announced McGee has resigned his position as assistant coach.

Danny Granger is likely done; the Pistons indicate they are likely to release him. He was an NBA All-Star as recently as 2009 but never appeared to recover after a devastating injury. He missed the 2012-13 season with the exception of 5 games; he played 29 games the following season. From there he moved to the Clippers, Heat and finally the Pistons. During his Pacer days he was one of the best, a standout player.

“Who are those guys?”
You might remember in the classic 1969 western movie Butch and the Sundance Kid
are being pursued by a posse. In the words of Butch Cassidy; “Who are those guys?”
We could utter the same sentence as Butch but for slightly different reasons. ESPN conducts an annual evaluation of NBA players prior to the season titled NBArank.

ESPN claims they poll 400 employees to provide the reader this information.
Their conclusions are certainly questionable in several instances and could certainly be challenged. As an example they placed Kobe at 93, Dwayne Wade at 43 and they have Kevin Love (21) ahead of Tim Duncan (23). This poll is one of the reasons I only depend on ESPN to telecast the games rather than provide information of this type which for the most part I find comical. NBArank is only useful for those who choose to believe in it.

The Logo
Remember I wrote of Stephen A. Smith declaration the NBA change its logo? Smith wanted the league to adopt a player to represent a later time period and suggested LeBron James as a replacement. If Smith had researched the issue rather than simply formulate an opinion he’d uncover the information I did. Much to my surprise the NBA has never acknowledged the iconic logo is that of Jerry West. Now everybody and their brother believes the logo to be that of Jerry West. Check for your satisfaction there is a photo of West at the time he played for the Lakers in the exact stance of the logo. What does the man think about this issue you ask, Yahoo Sports managed to corner the former Laker player, general manager and consultant.

They posed the question to West and he said what we all expected “He’d have no problem if the NBA decided in favor of a change.”  Corporations have a variety of reasons for changing their logo and if the NBA decides to change it they will. It’s highly likely no image of an individual would be part of a change. If LeBron (or anyone’s) image is used they would expect financial remuneration. West has received not one cent for the emblem the NBA adopted in 1972, that might be the reason they never acknowledged it was him. Just in case you might wonder about other professional sports we’ll check for Smith. The NFL might have had another logo but the present one has changed very little from a 1960 version I uncovered. We could say the say for MLB, designed in 1968 and implemented in 1969 it too has changed little. Consider this West believes if the logo is changed it should reflect Michael Jordan’s image. The question who’s made more of an impact on the NBA and basketball Michael Jordan or LeBron James?

Basketball from a fans perspective

Brazil in da house
I didn’t know a great deal about Marcelo Huertas except I knew he was from Brazil. I decided to check out his bio and provide you and me some information. He’s 32-years old so the Lakers have no plans for him becoming the starting point guard at least I believe that. He’ll back up D’Angelo Russell providing a veteran presence on the court and a spark off the bench. Although from Brazil the 6-3 point guard actually played high school ball in a Dallas-Fort Worth suburb.

After graduating from Coppel High School in 2001 he joined FMU Sao Paulo in his native Brazil, from there he played for a number of Euro teams over the next 14 years.  Although eligible for the 2005 NBA Draft he went un-drafted, on September 9, 2015 he signed a one year non-guaranteed contract with the Lakers. Huertas is a throw-back in a manner of speaking he’s a pass first point guard uncommon in the NBA of today.

Hey Stephen A.
“If you are predicting 27 wins I LAUGH AT THAT”. Melo to all the Knick doubters.
I’m not sure where the poster is intended to be displayed, it contains an image of Carmelo Anthony.  Standing on Carmelo's right side is new Knick Arron Affallo and on his life is 2015 number one draft pick Kristaps Porzingis the sentence above is on the poster. Of course it stands for nothing unless the Knicks become winners again. As for Stephen A. Smith he’s been one of the most vocal critics of Knick management. I laugh at this poster because it says “I don’t care what you say we are better than that.”

Another controversy
This story continues to evolve as additional details continue to be presented. University of Missouri-Kansas City assistant coach Andrew McGee is currently suspended by his present employer. McGee had served as an assistant on Rick Pitino’s Louisville staff for a number of years. A book recently published claims McGee brought female escorts to parties as an inducement for prospects their fathers or guardians to choose Louisville.

Five former players have confirmed the story however one former player has indicated no such activity occurred. Yet to be heard at this point is McGee, Pitino has called for him to refute the story or admit responsibility. As for Pitino he claims no knowledge which may or may not be true. The bigger question does every head coach know at all times know the day to day activities of assistants? I just heard this morning that coach whomever they are responsible for all activity relating to their team, what do you think?

You have a friend
“What is friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies.”---Aristotle I believe that quote might apply to Knicks owner James Dolan and former coach and general manager Isiah Thomas. Recently Dolan detailed in an HBO’s Real Sports interview his belief in his friend Thomas. Earlier this year the owner hired Thomas (again) this time for his WNBA Liberty team. This hire was made despite the sexual harassment lawsuit brought against MSG and the Knicks while Thomas was at the helm of the Knicks.

Thomas has continued to defend himself over and over again indicating he wasn’t guilty of anything. He’s correct in that regard the court did not find Thomas guilty but concluded a “hostile” work environment existed. In any event a loud howl went up from the media and fans when the Thomas hire was announced. It’s my understanding Thomas will not coach the Liberty but will be part of the front office for the team. Maybe Aristotle is correct perhaps Dolan and Thomas is a single soul dwelling in two bodies

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

I’m probably in trouble again
Not yet but once the Doc Rivers fan club reads this they are going to be upset with me once again. The coach is back-pedaling once again perhaps just as much during the days he played guard for the Atlanta Hawks. In an interview Rivers was reported to have said the Warriors were lucky to win an NBA Championship. Voices in Northern California rose to protest the view expressed by Rivers. First it was Steph Curry then Klay Thompson later Draymon Green and Andrew Bogut chimed in with their opinion of the Rivers statement.

"I'm going to give Klay Thompson and his whole team the benefit of the doubt on that," Rivers said. "What I said is true -- not the way it was said to them. I never said the Warriors were lucky. That's unrepresentative of what I said. I said you have to be lucky to win. It's a completely different way.” Okay maybe it’s just me but that sounds like double-talk to me. Come on coach admit it you made the statement and live with it don’t try and clean it up. Our news cycle is ever changing people will soon forget your comment but not if you continue to try and explain your actions.

Kentucky doesn’t win always
The All American list in the upcoming season contains the name of Kyle Wiltjer. Wiltjer’s name might not be familiar to all college fans. See Wiltjer began his college career at Kentucky but left after his sophomore year. Was he good you ask good enough to be named SEC Sixth Man of the Year in his second year? He transferred to Gonzaga but was forced to sit-out a year transferring. His numbers are not eye-popping at 16.8 ppg. The 6-10 240 pound forward managed to lead the Zags in 3-point field goal shooting.

Wiltjer was honored with several 2nd team All-American honors last season so it shouldn‘t be a shock he’s a choice to ascend to the first team. Those in the Eastern and Midwest Time Zones have few opportunities to witness his play. Gonzaga games (excepting weekend) are not telecast until 10:00-9:00 p.m. Eastern and Midwest Time Zones. In any event mark this one as a loser for Kentucky and a winner for Gonzaga.

The international NBA
We’ve discussed often the growth of the NBA internationally in the past. We can attribute a large part of it through the efforts of former NBA Commissioner David Stern. The latest figures I could locate indicate the beginning of the 2014 season saw 101 international players in the NBA the largest number ever. This is a far cry from the days when teams were somewhat hesitant to draft international players. Once relegated to the second round of the draft we’ve witnessed a greater number being drafted in the 1st round. This was evident in 2015 when the Knicks chose Kristas Porzingis from Latvia as the 4th pick in the first round. The Magic followed making Mario Hezonja the 5th pick, Hezonja is a 6-8 guard from Croatia.

The 26th pick belonged to the Spurs who chose 6-11 Nikola Milutinov from Serbia. While three players chosen in the first round out of 30 might not seem a large number consider the fact there have been years there were no international players chosen. As for the second round of the draft 10 of 30 players were global players. At the same time this is no declaration that any of the above will become All Star’s but they mounted the first hurdle, they were drafted. The game we love especially the NBA will continue to grow in the eyes of the world, it will never replace soccer (football) but it might be the number two sport in several world nations currently.

The return
Any of you remember The Starbury; it was the low-cost basketball shoe by Stephon Marbury and sold through Steve and Barry’s stores. The shoe sold for only $15 far less than Nike, Adidas or other major brands on the market. The shoe’s been off the market since 2009 through no fault of Marbury, Steve and Barry’s had filed for bankruptcy. Despite his talent Marbury’s NBA career flamed out but was resurrected in China as his shoe soon will be. The Starbury basketball shoe is on its way back. Rest assured once production is begun the shoe will retail for more than $15 but considerably far less than those listed above. At the time the shoe was on the market there were complaints about the quality but that might be a little misleading. We all may have witnessed NBA players suffer “blowouts” on more expensive brands.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

Reality Star----really
In the past I have been highly critical of ESPN especially when the network attempts to entertain rather than inform. I speak specifically of the Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith of First Take; we could also add Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic on Mike and Mike. I wish to take an opportunity to salute Scott Van Pelt and ESPN for giving him the freedom to express the thoughts of many regarding Lamar Odom during this critical point in his life.

I’m not going to detail the troubled life of Lamar Odom I’m just going to state he was a talented player. In addition the outpouring of concern by the NBA family indicates he is well liked by a number of his contemporaries. Odom was not a reality star as several news sources first reported the story have claimed. I’m not going to repeat the Van Pelt editorial verbatim check for yourself it’s available on YouTube.

You got a problem
Its clear rapper Master P. doesn’t like Kobe Bryant and that’s okay, he’s used the recent Lamar Odom tragedy to call attention to his feud with Bryant. He stated and I paraphrase just a portion of his commentary; “Where was Kobe when Lamar needed him?” The first question we might pose it appears Master P. had a relationship with Lamar what did you do for him? How do you know what Kobe might have done in the past leading up to last week?

Check this out, Master P. has a brother currently serving a life sentence in prison lets say the relationship between the brothers appears to be strained at this point. We might ask Master P. the same question he’s aimed at Kobe, “What have you done for your brother? “ We really have no idea what Master P. might have done leading up to his brothers’ conviction, the same could be said for Kobe and Lamar we just don‘t know. People living in glass houses should ensure rocks are cleared from the vicinity of their home.

Were number one, were number one
We’ve been hearing fans yell “were number one” for more years than we can count, it’s been used lesser in recent years than it once was. The chant is likely to be heard at two schools; Kentucky and North Carolina. USA Today Top 25 coaches’ poll has both schools (at least for now) at the top of their poll.

Down to five
The Rivals number one prospect in the Class of 2016 is on the way this week. Harry Giles is headed to Kentucky to check out the facilities and the campus. Also on the list for the 6-9 230 pound power forward is Duke, Kansas, North Carolina and Wake Forest. Just in case you might wonder how Wake made the cut Giles is from Winston-Salem (NC) home for him and Wake Forest.

Rodney Dangerfield
Once again I use the line often used by the late comedian Rodney Dangerfield; “I don’t get no respect.” This time the respect line applies to the Warriors winning the NBA Championship or if they are capable of a repeat. Clipper Coach Doc Rivers announced for the entire world to hear; “The Warriors were lucky they didn’t have to play the Spurs or us. “ Doc conveniently forgot his team would have faced the Warriors if they hadn’t blown 3 games to 1 lead.

Then a number in the media begin a discussion of this subject, they questioned if the Warriors were legitimate champions and capable of defending the championship. I’m a believer now; I will admit I didn’t believe a jump-shooting team could win an NBA Championship. Will the Warriors repeat as champions, I have no idea I do know this. Until a team knocks the Warriors off the pedestal they are NBA Champions, they are despite what Doc Rivers or anyone else says.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

Did you hear?
In news of a surprising nature Kings guard Rajon Rondo says; “My relationship with coach has not been going too well.” We are surprised, no shocked is the better word. Just kidding folks sometimes humor does not come across in print. Much earlier I hinted the Kings represented a strange “marriage” of characters ready to erupt at any point. The owner, Boogie Cousins, George Karl and Rondo, place all the ingredients in a pot stir slowly and hope for no boil-over.

Native Son
If you were asked to compile an inventory of the top college coaches your count would name contain the names of Calipari, Pitino, Williams and Self and maybe Alford. It‘s quite possible you might omit Tom Izzo at Michigan. Most coaching bios detail a succession of moves around various portions of the nation. There are always exceptions to that statement and Izzo is that exception. Tom Izzo has spent his entire career in the State of Michigan, born in the Upper Peninsula he would go on to play guard at Northern Michigan. After his playing career concluded he served as head coach of a Michigan high school and would later serve as an assistant coach at Northern Michigan and later Michigan State.

In 1995 Michigan State would hire Izzo as its head coach and the rest is history. His first team finished the season with a .500 record 16-16, in his 18 years since the ’95-’96 season his Michigan State teams have never won less than 17 games. Three times his teams have won more than 30 games with a high of 33-5 in the ‘98-’99 season. We can count him among the small number of active coaches who won an NCAA Championship. He’s coached his team to nearly 700 (694) victories during his time at Michigan State, Izzo has tasted much success coaching without leaving the State of Michigan. Perhaps the only remaining accomplishment is a Hall of Fame selection and that’s coming in time no doubt.

Bits n Pieces
Did you hear rookie point guard D’Angelo Russell requested a locker next to Kobe Bryant? Russell stated he’s unsure how long Kobe’s going to be around and wants to learn as much as possible from him. “It’s easier talking to him in this manner rather than having to walk across the room.” Makes sense to me but I wonder if Russell has heard any of those stories that Kobe bites.

Folks comparing Larry Brown to Bruce Pearl need to consider a few facts. As this is written SMU appears to be in a holding pattern regarding the status of Brown’s job, of course the school could change its mind and fire him. As for Pearl Tennessee fired him in March 2011 after an additional set NCAA infractions were uncovered. August of 2011 the NCAA gave Pearl a three-year show cause penalty for lying to the body. I’m not making an excuse for Brown wrong is wrong; stories about a life-time ban from coaching are ridiculous. Besides the fact at age 75 it’s likely SMU is Brown’s final stop on his coaching career.

I never say never however I wonder if Dwight Howard realizes the significance of his statement. The Rockets center said; “I could play 10 or 11 more years.” As Howard prepares for birthday number 30 I don’t doubt his statement I question if it’s possible baring injury. In the past Howard’s never appeared to have a great off-season work ethic. As he grows older its going to be more and more difficult to play at the level he believes.

Watching Tarik Black play for the Lakers in a pre-season game I thought back to his days at Kansas. The 6-9 Black was the starting center until he was displaced by Joel Embiid. Black went un-drafted in the 2014 draft while Embiid became the 3rd pick in the first round of that draft. Black would sign with the Rockets but was waived in December 2014 and would sign with the Lakers. Black appears to have secured a reserve role with the Lakers former teammate Embiid is yet to make an appearance in an NBA game.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

You got to be kidding
Once upon a time I held a great deal of respect for Doc Rivers, the more time passes the more my view of him has changed and not for the positive. Rivers tosses gasoline in the direction of a fire when it’s unnecessary. Last week he said; “The Warriors were lucky to win the NBA Championship, they didn’t have to play us or the Spurs.” We realize the Warriors didn’t play the Spurs but what about the Clippers Doc? Didn’t your team have 3 games to 1 lead on the Rockets and lose 3 straight? The Warriors had no opportunity to play your Clippers because they imploded something few teams have done with a 3-1 lead.

How do you Doc Rivers allow your team to lose 3 straight playoff games? This is a rare occurrence a team losing a series up 3-1. Warrior Klay Thompson’s reaction to the Rivers comment; “Doc sounds like a bitter man.” What about your thoughts, is Rivers trying to psyche his team up in preparation of the season? On the other hand he might be using the old Jedi------correction Phil Jackson mind trick. Before I could publish this narrative Rivers “clarified” his comments. "No, I don't think the Warriors were lucky to win, I think they deserved to win. I wish we could have played them.” Sounds like he’s back pedaling to me how about you?

Moving forward
The news caused me to check the date this project was originally announced. It was 2012 and May 22nd to be exact, on that date the Warriors held a press conference announcing the plan for a new arena. The arena to be built in San Francisco was bogged down by the first location chosen and the alternative site environmental issues were brought to light. The Warriors announced the purchase of 12-acres in the Mission Bay portion of the city. It appears a start date for the 18,000 seat arena and surrounding development is ready to proceed. Ground breaking for the arena is scheduled for yet to be determined 2016 date with a 2018 planned opening.

A name you should know
Bill Bridges died September 25th in Santa Monica (CA); Bridges is one of the historic figures of the past unknown to many of today’s generation. He left Hobbs New Mexico and headed for Kansas University, he arrived a year after Wilt Chamberlain left Kansas for the NBA. The 6-6 228 pound forward was a force on the boards, his numbers 13.2 points and 13.9 rebounds a game during his 3-years at Kansas. As for the 3-year totals freshman were not eligible during that period.

Bridges chose the Kansas City Steers of the American Basketball League rather than the NBA. The ABL is not to be confused with the ABA which came into existence years later. In any event Bridges role with the Steers was outstanding; he set the league single-game scoring record with 55 points. The ABL would only exist one and ½ seasons folding in 1962. Bridges would enter the NBA and play for a number of teams over a 12-year career. His pro career numbers were similar to those established at Kansas, 11.9 points and 11.9 rebounds a game. Bill Bridges died at 76, R.I.P.

3 names-----1 team
Wes Unseld spent his entire NBA career with one team however he experienced 3 name changes during his career. He would arrive in the NBA from Louisville as he became the second pick in the 1968 NBA Draft by the Baltimore Bullets. The Bullets would move to Landover (MD) and be re-named the Capital Bullets since the city is close proximity to the nations capital. Still later an arena would be constructed in the District of Columbia and this move the team would become the Washington Bullets. Of course later the Bullets name would be dropped in favor of the Wizards. Unseld was a master at playing center at 6-7 and 245 pounds, there may have been questions whether he could play the position at his height. Unseld used his bulk to carve out a spot around the basket and had an uncanny ability to gauge the direction the ball would bounce off the rim.

Unseld never ran the floor because he was so superb at rebounding the ball and whipping it down the court to a streaking guard or forward. Although he was a proficient scorer in college (20.6 ppg) he concentrated his efforts on rebounding and defense in the NBA. Unseld career numbers, 10.8 ppg, 14.0 rebounds and a sparkling 3.9 assist per game mark. He would become the leagues MVP in 1969 and his team would win the 1978 NBA Championship. In 1988 he was honored with a selection to the Naismith Hall of Fame and in 1996 when the NBA announced its 50th Anniversary team Unseld’s name was included. Unseld served as head coach and in the front office of the team before leaving to serve as basketball coach at Unselds School a coed private school located in Baltimore his wife had opened in 1979.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

The NBA world-wide
I like the fact NBA basketball has gained a world-wide following over the last 20+ years. This explosion has resulted in a record number of international players coming into the NBA. The problem---former Commissioner David Stern’s belief the league should expand internationally. My issue has always been the same the time difference between Europe, Asia and the U.S. Since Stern has retired expansion has been moved to the back burner of the stove.

Adam Silver addressed the issue while in Madrid recently and states; “I don’t believe its going to happen in the near future but it could occur one day.” A space shuttle type vehicle due to the distance and time change is required. I could see the possibility of a development of this type changing the view of international expansion. The jet age has certainly shrunk world travel over the last 30 or 40 years however it’s no where near what it must be to sustain Stern’s vision of a Euro NBA.

The difference
Kobe Bryant is entering his 20th NBA season and just turned 37 in August. Tim Duncan will turn 40 before the 2015-16 is complete, this will be year 18 in the NBA for him. Everyone from the elderly to youngsters has said in unison “Kobe needs to retire.” Interesting we hear few folks making that type of statement regarding Tim Duncan. The difference between the two Duncan can dial back his game. Duncan has never been the focal point of the Spurs offense unlike Kobe Bryant. We know what the Spurs center will do can Kobe adjust his game in a similar manner to Duncan? We’ll soon find out once the season begins.

Is he under more pressure?
The question looms in front of us, which NBA coach is under the most pressure to win? Is it David Blatt with the Cavs or perhaps Steve Kerr defending a championship? It’s certainly not Gregg Popovich the Spurs coach is never under any pressure. There are others but I hope you see the picture here. It’s my belief the greatest pressure must be on Billy Donovan with the Thunder. They may not be a championship team yet but they are a good team. The Thunder barely missed the playoffs last season (45-37) yet finished with a better record than three Eastern Conference teams who did make the playoffs.

The Western Conference is substantially tougher than the East in addition the injuries the injuries. The Thunder may have suffered more injuries to key players than any other team in the NBA. Kevin Durant is coming off an injury plagued season but will be a free-agent in 2016. Serge Ibaka and Russell Westbrook were in and out of the lineup at points during the season. Despite the injury bug that struck the Thunder they still barely missed the playoffs. Donovan is an excellent college basketball coach, will the Thunder adapt to the changes he’s likely to bring with him. This and other questions soon will be answered as we approach the 2015-16 NBA season.

Hall of Fame honors
USA Today posed an interesting question---”Should Hall of Fame stop inducting active coaches.” I didn’t read the article but wondered if it was prompted by the recent actions of the NCAA toward Larry Brown. I’ve always believed hall of fame honors should be reserved for coaches or players no longer active. For reasons I’ve never fully understood basketball players must wait I believe 5 years after retirement yet coaches can be enshrined at any point.

To my knowledge there is no explanation for the double-standard that says coaches can be honored as soon as they are nominated while players must endure a waiting period. It’s not just Brown, Rick Pitino, John Calipari and Roy Williams are all in the Naismith Hall of Fame. Kevin McHale’s situation is different from the others; he was honored as a player and later became an NBA coach. I’m sure there are others I’ve overlooked but the aforementioned all in the hall and continue coaching.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

Who was first?
I don’t remember the date, almost immediately after the NBA Draft and free-agency I said; “The Knicks will be better.” I made this statement despite the bombastic angry outbursts of one Stephen A. Smith about “his Knicks.” He informed all of us how upset he was with the Knicks and the moves the front office made. His indignation appeared aimed at President Phil Jackson more than Coach Derek Fisher. Well change is in the air, on October 8th about 11:40 a.m. on ESPN’s First Take I heard these words fall from the lips of Smith; “The Knicks will be improved.” Then I got up off the floor because the admission by Smith caused me to fall out of my chair. The unbelievable had occurred, Stephen A. Smith admitting he may have been wrong about something.

They face the same issue
Kansas freshman Cheick Diallo is yet to be declared eligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Despite the delay Diallao is practicing with his teammates. Kentucky faces the very same issue with 6-11 freshmen Skal Labissiere. A number question how both could be enrolled in school for nearly two months and have received no NCAA clearance to play.

They got his back
I’ve read a number of emails defending Stephen A. Smith and his comments regarding Kevin Durant. They point out that Smith never stated he’d talked to Durant. They also have stated Smith said he’d heard individuals discuss the possibility of Durant heading west. They also state he said nothing about Durant heading to the Lakers just that he was headed for Los Angeles which could be the Clippers. I understand their defense of Smith if the statements attributed to him are correct. I assert the conviction there is no excuse for any member of the media to threaten anyone unless they believe they are in danger.

I don’t believe that was the case with the Durant-Smith feud. On the other hand it’s perfectly okay for Smith to call for firing football coach Charley Strong based on his conviction alone. Strong made a negative statement defending himself he might be subject to the ranting and raving of Smith. President Harry Truman once made a statement that’s become a classic. Whether he first made the quote is unknown but it’s attributed to him; “If you can’t stand the heat you need to get out of the kitchen.” It’s clear the “heat” of Durant’s comment offended Smith.

Bit n Pieces
Is this the new improved version of Nick Young? On the eve of training camp Laker Nick Young being interviewed wanted the world to know. He said he no longer wants the nickname Swaggy P used any longer. He says “just call me Nicholas,’ come on he can’t be serious---can he?

I’m shocked; Dick Vitale the friend of “everybody” came down hard on Coach Larry Brown. Read it for yourself on ESPN.com’s college basketball page and draw your own conclusions. I stated earlier three writers who cover college basketball have called for Brown to be ousted. Vitale is different for several reasons, he is a member of the sports media but this former coach takes it one step further. Vitale states after 3 schools are placed on probation (UCLA, Kansas and SMU) Brown should be banned from coaching college basketball-----a mighty strong and perhaps surprising response from Dickey V.

Are the legs gone, or did “half-man half amazing” Vince Carter simply blow a tire? The 6-6 Carter became a legend when he dunked over 7-2 Frederic Weis in the 2000 Olympics. Now playing for the Grizzlies in a recent pre-season game Carter missed a dunk when he was blocked by the rim, he couldn’t get the ball over the rim.

Baylor’s Scott Drew is a good basketball coach; he turns out winning teams every season. This upcoming season his Bears are ranked number 9 in an NBCSports pre-season poll. That same poll has the Kansas Jayhawks listed as the number four team in the country. Okay it’s just pre-season which proves nothing but it points out a fact. Scott Drew is a phenomenal recruiter but cannot beat Bill Self on a consistent basis. Without checking homes I’d be willing to beat 75% of his roster every year is Texas kids a clear in-state advantage over Self. The opposite likely exists with Kansas 80 of its talent lies outside the State of Kansas.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

Tiger bound
Mizzou received its third 2016 commitment, Reed Nikko a 6-9 power forward indicated he’s headed to Columbia. Nikko is from Maple Grove (MN) a Twin Cities suburb, he’s a Rivals 3-star prospect. Mizzou has only two scholarships remaining for 2016.

Kansas City connection
I'm watching the Laker-Jazz pre-season game and it reminded me again the Jazz have a Kansas City connection. Guard Alec Burks played at Colorado however he developed his game at Grandview High School in Grandview (MO) a KC suburb. Guard Trey Burke grew up in Ohio and played his college ball at Michigan, you ask where he is connected to Kansas City. Trey’s mom met her future husband when both were students at Northwest Missouri State University. Trey’s dad played basketball at the college while his mom ran track the sport she began at Ruskin High in Kansas City.

Is the drama necessary?
The question is posed based on the drama surrounding Tristan Thompson and the Cavs. Granted athletes in comparison to many of us in the private sector are often grossly over-paid. As for Thompson he’s proven his value to the Cavs especially when Kevin Love went down with an injury. The drama I speak of is the back and forth negotiations between him and Cavs management, LeBron James has even gotten into the middle of this rift.

All this because Thompson refuses to sign a qualifying offer which makes him a holdout. It’s reported the Cavs have removed all images of the players from Quicken Loans Arena. We have no idea why Thompson has taken this stance; it might be based on the off-season rewards. A number of Cavs were rewarded for their deep run into the playoffs, Thompson might be saying; “What you gonna do for me?”

The pipeline remains active
John Calipari did it again, another 5-star prospect is headed to Lexington. Wenyen Gabriel is a 6-9 200 pound forward from Wilbraham a suburb of Springfield (MA). Interesting Springfield is where the game was invented by Dr. Naismith in 1891. I know nothing about Gabriel except he’s a Rivals 5-star prospect and is number 17 in the Class of 2016. What I know at 6-9 and 200 pounds he’s going to spend an ample amount of time in the weight room. The road to Lexington is still open and looks as though John Calipari is going to remain in place for awhile longer. All that talk about him leaving was just that talk.

“I’m smarter than you”
My war with certain members of the sports media continues with no end in sight. We all have egos and that’s okay until you display it arrogantly. You know; “I’m the smartest guy in the room” mentality. “I can say this because I’ve covered basketball _____ years. I was the beat writer for ___________.” Okay I get it you say if they are that upsetting quit reading their columns, change the channel or mute the sound on television appearances. That’s actually easier than it sounds please allow me time to explain further. The true or untrue story Stephen A. Smith reported on Kevin Durant. I didn’t hear Smith on his television program I didn’t hear a pod cast or read the story on the ESPN.com website; I read the Smith headline on several NBA websites. Smith is not the only guilty media person in my view.

I can provide you a hint, if they talk down to their audience as if they are more intelligent chances are real good they belong in the assembly of “I’m smarter than you.” I would never write Words eye view from the perspective I’m smarter than you. In all the years I’ve followed sports I don’t ever remember a member of the media threatening a player in the manner Smith did on October 5th. He says Durant crossed the line calling him a liar, I believe Smith’s crossed the line with his implied threats against Durant. Somebody pointed out a fact to me; Smith claims if Durant intended to remain in Oklahoma City he’d signed an extension right now. Why because Smith says he should, there is no timetable for Durant he could sign an extension on July 1, 2016 and still remain with the Thunder.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

I can speculate with the best of ‘em
With no direct knowledge of the subject we are often prone to believe the rumors we often read and hear. That’s the case with the latest Kevin Durant story circulating; despite the injuries Kevin Durant is still considered a talented athlete. When Durant was questioned about Oklahoma he indicated “he was content in Oklahoma City.” A year or so later came word he might possibly head for Washington D.C. once he became a free agent. Durant grew up in nearby Maryland in addition John Wall indicated “he was going to recruit Durant.” As I indicated its all speculation at this point we really have no idea where he’s headed. Now reports are circulating he’s talking Los Angeles Lakers.

I refuse to get excited until the words come out of Durant’s mouth; “I’m a Laker.” Come July 2016 there is no doubt Durant will be the most highly sought free agent in the pool. Whether this is Kobe’s last season or 2016 he would become the top dog for a young Laker team. As for other potential free agents LeBron James is not leaving Cleveland and I don’t want Dwight Howard. NOTE: Before I could publish this story it was disputed by the subject. Speaking to an Oklahoma City reporter Kevin Durant said; “I don’t talk to Stephen A. Smith at all. No one in my family, my friends do. So he’s lying.” See you thought it was just me that had a problem with Smith.

He’s upset
This is actually part II of the above due to the response by Stephen A. Smith. He took to twitter to defend his story on Kevin Durant, he took offense to Kevin Durant referring to him as a liar. I didn’t realize when I wrote the story Smith was the basis for “The Kevin Durant to the Lakers story.” In any event Smith defends his story by stating it comes from reliable sources. It’s been mentioned previously we live in a far different age, the lines have become blurred between social networks, entertainment and reporting the news. Today they write or report what they believe to be the truth often using that old tired statement; “reliable sources.”

Just who are they when you cannot name the source, how do we know the information you are reporting to be the truth? Sports news is certainly not on the level of a Watergate Deep Throat scenario. Opinions are a whole different matter Smith (and anyone else) is entitled to their opinion even if I don’t agree with it. At the same time if someone were to make a statement about me I felt untrue I should be able to respond with being criticized for it. I say baloney to Smith‘s reporting, on the other hand there is ample time for Durant to change his mind between now and July 1, 2016.

Something to prove
A number of athletes in the NBA have something to prove in the upcoming season. Likely at the top of your list and mine is Ty Lawson. If you check the numbers this 5-11 point guard is outstanding, 15.2 and 9.6 points and assists a game. Caught drunk driving twice might be the basis for his trade from the Nuggets to the Rockets. Early reports are Lawson might come off the bench to relive starter Patrick Beverly.

If Lawson can avoid the problems that plagued him while a member of the Nuggets it’s my belief he excels over Beverly in every area except defense. That’s not to say Lawson is a bad defensive player he’s slightly below Beverly in my view. All other areas of the game he trumps Beverly. Hopefully he will provide the Rockets the additional spark needed to play for the Western Division Championship.

The truth
We’ve heard a number of stories over the summer regarding the Knicks Carmelo Anthony. The first reports stated “Anthony was upset with the pick of Kristaps Porzingis and other Knick draft picks.” Later came word Anthony claiming he made no such statement and went on to express a positive view of the 2015-16 Knicks. Training camp’s open and Anthony is all smiles, it’s reported he’s gone out of his way to help those new to the team.

Anthony is making claims the team will compete and I don’t doubt his words. New York is still the media capital of the nation; all the major networks including ESPN are located but a few drive-time hours apart. Despite the views of Stephen A. Smith and others I believe the Knicks will be improved this upcoming season. It would be foolish to view them as playoff contenders even in the weak Eastern Conference.

Basketball from a fan’s perspective

I have a delivery for Mr. Harden
Remember the James Harden story earlier in the summer? The Rockets sharpshooter left Nike and signed a 13-year $200 million dollar deal to sport Adidas on the basketball court. Within a short span of time Harden was spotted in public with Nikes on his feet. See his Adidas commercial, a truck is backed into his drive-way and when the delivery man opens the back of the truck we see Adidas boxes stacked to the ceiling of the truck.

Are you surprised?
Veteran sharpshooter Mike Miller signed a 1-year contract with the Nuggets. He was traded to the Blazers in July and in late September he was waived in a buy-out deal.  After serving two tours (Heat/Cavs) with LeBron I thought he was headed back to Northern Ohio. Miller continues to be a prolific 3-point shooter although this is probably his last NBA stop.  No matter he should provide the Nuggets a valuable scoring punch off the bench.

“I don’t get no respect”
The above sentence became a classic utilized for years by the late comic Rodney Dangerfield. In his comedy monologue he would discuss a variety of subjects but would always state; “I don’t get no respect” at some point. We might make the same statement regarding the Golden State Warriors. Don’t misunderstand me most of the comments I’ve read and heard give them props for winning the 2015 NBA Championship.

I’ve heard few expressions of support for them repeating as champions. Until there is a new king I’m going to give them their just due. I was one of the skeptics last year; I had always believed you had to play the game inside-out. No way could a team with the bulk of the scoring concentrated in the backcourt (Curry and Thompson) win a championship. Well the Warriors proved me and a number of other folks wrong last year until there is a new champ crowned I’m going with the Warriors.

He hurt again
The headline grammar is not correct but you get the point. The Bulls Derrick Rose is injured once again; he suffered a left orbital fracture when he was accidentally elbowed in the face during practice. Reports are the surgery was successful and Rose will be able to resume basketball activities in about two weeks. We believe he’ll probably wear a mask similar to the one worn by Rip Hamilton. I just read Grizzlies guard Mike Conley indicated he intends to wear his mask although his face has long healed; Conley suffered the same fate last year. As injures go this is certainly not as serious as those he suffered in the past. A torn ACL caused Rose to miss the 2012-13 season.

Rose would tear the medial meniscus in his right knee in November of 2013 and missed the balance of the 2013-14 season. I’ve heard a number expressed the belief Kobe Bryant should retire due to his injury issues. Without checking numbers Rose may have missed as many if not more than Kobe over the last few seasons. I would guess the age factor (26) works in his favor over Kobe. In any event I hope Rose is able to return to the court and play a complete season without further injury. Reports we hear Bulls fans are more upset with Rose for talking potential free agency. As for his pending civil case I would prefer to refrain from discussing it until a legal decision is rendered.
