Basketball from a fans perspective

It’s happening baby
As this is written the Cleveland Indians rush out to 3 games to 1 lead over the Cubs.  The Cubs win Game 5 however it remains likely the Indians win the World Series and deprive long suffering Cubs fans the prospect of waiting another 71 years before their beloved team might return to the fall classic. Can you imagine two championships in one city in less than months, we wondered if this might has occurred in the past.  Our memories are so short research determines it’s been more than one time and its occurred in several different cities.  Most recently in 2009 the Steelers won the Super Bowl and the Penguins won the Stanley Cup.  Before that it was 2004 the Patriots winning the Super Bowl and the baseball Red Sox World Series became winners.

The elephant in the room
You know there is always a subject everyone notices but for a number of reasons fails to discuss in public.  Marc Spears attempted to cover the issue for ESPN’s The Undefeated.  The title “Where Are All The White American NBA Players?”  Spears gathered a number of white NBA players for the story asking questions of each.

The responses offered by the players were quite interesting and informative.  I offer no proof just a theory; we’ve discussed the increasing numbers of Euro players in the NBA.  It seems as the number of Euro players began increasing the amount of white American players began to decrease.  My suggestion is to read the October 25th edition of The Undefeated and draw your on conclusions.

Presidential Citizens Medal
The Cavs are NBA Champions but only through the regular season.  It’s not me making the statement it’s the President of the United States Barack Obama.  He claims he’s going with the Warriors strictly because of Kevin Durant.  The president says; “I think they have too much firepower.”  Just kidding the NBA Champion will not receive a Presidential Citizens Medal just my idea of a joke.

This is different
Few prospects remain uncommitted in the Class of 2017.  Even more interesting a number of the schools while competitive are not usually ranked so high.  It was mentioned previously Western Kentucky was in the Top 10 in recruiting.  New to the gathering Auburn, Arkansas and Washington.  These schools and others appear to announce to the big boys they wanna play on their level.

Finally on the move????
I wanted to check the latest news before writing this article.  It appears the Warriors will play in Chase Center in the fall of 2019.  The replacement arena for the team will be constructed in the Mission Bay section of San Francisco.  The Chase Center will seat 18,000 for basketball and the amenities will be state of the art.

As mentioned previously the Chase Center has been tied up by a location issue which caused a move to another location.  Location became an issue in the secondary location due to its proximity to a hospital.  Those of us outside the Bay Area cannot be assured everything is moving smoothly.  That’s my reasoning for underlining the word appears in the first sentence of this report.

Basketball from a fans perspective

This is interesting
We had questions if the Thunder could adapt their game this season with no Kevin Durant in the lineup. Could Russell Westbrook raise his game to a higher level?  We might have questions if we consider the first two games.  This tidbit from game two, Westbrook led the way in an overtime win versus the Suns with another triple-double.  The Thunder point guard had an amazing game with 51 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists but took 44 shots while shooting 39% from the floor the Thunder team registered a total of 96 field goal attempts.

This is not intended as a knock on the Suns the question can Westbrook continue this pace against the Warriors, Cavs and others.  The team needs to nominate somebody on the team to step up; they will certainly not go very far in the playoffs if this trend continues through the season.  For one thing teams are not dumb they will figure out a method to slow (notice I didn’t say stop) Westbrook.  In addition if this pace continues Westbrook is likely to worn out by the time the playoffs begin.

You don’t say
The NBA connection in Vegas is well known, it’s the Lakers “second” home.  In addition NBA Summer League is held at the Thomas and Mack Center located on the UNLV campus.  Stories circulate on a yearly basis “the NBA is headed to Las Vegas.”  With the opening in spring of the T-Mobile Center there will be an NHL team for the 2017-18 season.  There is also an indication the NFL Raiders plan on locating to the city from Oakland.  Construction of a 65,000 seat stadium has been signed by the governor of the state.  As for the NBA they would share space in the T-Mobile Center with the NHL team.  The CEO of MGM Resorts International 50% owner of the arena claims an NBA team is headed to Las Vegas.

Most interesting is his claim “It will not be an expansion team it will be an existing franchise.” Let’s explore his statement a littler further.  It was rumored a few years back Milwaukee might relocate.  With a new arena on the horizon I doubt it’s the Bucks.  The Kings are also secure beginning this season in a brand new building.  There is an outside chance he could be discussing the Pelicans with infighting occurring between the owner and members of his family but even that’s a question mark.  Bottom line I have no idea what franchise he’s hinting might move to Vegas.  Expansion possible franchise move doubtful.

Old versus New
Ol skool terminology is used to describe much of the music of the ‘50’s, ‘60’s and ’70’s as for hip-hop I’m unsure if that is the term to describe a portion of today’s music.  The point I’m attempting to make over the course of this past summer we’ve heard many discussions (arguments in some cases) from an earlier generation of NBA players versus those of today.

At the dawn of another NBA season let’s just say we should place all discussion in the rear-view mirror.  Sure I’ve taken sides on occasions however I can state with conviction some of the best basketball witnessed is played in the 21st Century.  Dr. J. versus LeBron James, Kareem Abdul Jabbar versus Boogie Cousins, its difficult to hold an argument sometimes when there is a Hall of Fame player in the discussion. Let’s all agree to disagree without being disagreeable.

Downtown Detroit
The Little Caesars Arena under construction in Detroit might soon be the new home of the Pistons.  I’d mentioned previously The Palace at Auburn Hills is the only NBA arena located outside the city limits all other arenas are located in the city, in some instances in the downtown area.  The Palace is 40 miles from downtown Detroit and maybe more depending on your starting point.   That might soon change, owner Tom Gore is negotiating an arrangement for the Pistons to move back to Detroit.

The Pistons have played their home games in The Palace sine 1988 and prior to that home was the Pontiac Superdome.  Technically the team has not played in Detroit since 1978 when they moved from Cobo Hall in downtown Detroit.  As for the arena Mike Illitch owns the NHL Red Wings and the baseball Tigers, he's also the founder and owner of Little Caesars Pizza.  I wish he'd come forth with a different name, oh well you can't have everything you want.

Basketball from a fans perspective

“Amazing Grace”
Smooth is the easiest word I could use to describe 25,000+ point Hall of Fame athlete Alex English.  English arrived in the NBA from South Carolina after being drafted in the second round of the 1976 draft by the Bucks.  He spent two years there before leaving in free-agency for the Pacers.  With the Pacers his scoring prowess began to blossom.  The Pacers would trade English to the Nuggets where his career went into the stratosphere.

English would spend 11 seasons with the Nuggets and would average 25.9 ppg while shooting .509 from the floor.  Try as he might English alone couldn’t raise the level of play of his Nuggets teammates.  The Nuggets only managed to a plus .500 record four times during his time with the team.  From his arrival in 1976 through 1991 English was one of the NBA’s most efficient and effective shooters.

English was one of those guys who could wake up in the middle of night get out of bed and drain shot after shot.  English is also one of those in the double-double club, enshrined in the Naismith and College Basketball Hall of Fame.  As for the title in 1987 English was the featured star in a movie titled “Amazing Grace and Chuck.

Moving too fast
I never claimed I worked for the Sixers, I said the other day they should trade Okafor based on break-out game Joel Embiid had.  It looks as though a trade is not in the offering based on the coaches’ comment.  Brett Brown indicates both Embiid and Okafor coming off injuries played limited minutes in the first game.  Brown further states he might experiment with a twin tower lineup.  Listen fans I never said Okafor couldn’t play I just believed Embiid had a higher upside, a twin tower front line might indeed work.  As the season progresses and each player receives more time on the court we shall see what we shall see.

Sugar
Sometimes a player leaves the game far too soon; often its due to injury other times its personal demons.  For Michael Ray Richardson nicknamed Sugar it personal due to a developed drug habit.  Sugar from Manual High in Denver graduated and headed for the University of Montana.  How good was he at Montana good enough to be made the 4th pick in the 1st round of the 1978 NBA Draft by the Knicks.

The 6-5 guard moved easily between the point and shooting guard position.  In four years with the Knicks Sugar averaged nearly 15 points, 7 assists, 3 steals and 6 rebounds a game. The problem at the time the Knicks were not very good and Sugar was the one bright spot.  Whether it was the pressure of playing under the bright lights of New York City or something else Sugar would “disappear” at times.

Near the end of his tenure with the Knicks he issued a statement that remains part of basketball lore forever.  Questioned on the bad play of the Knicks he said; “The ship be sinking.”  From 1982 to 1986 he played for the Warriors and New Jersey Nets and played reasonably well despite a drug addition.  In 1986 Sugar was banned for life by Commissioner David Stern for violation of the NBA’s drug policy.

Sugar would never return to the NBA although the lifetime ban was lifted in 1988.  He spent the balance of his playing career in the Continental Basketball Association and in Europe playing for a number of teams.  Sugar began a second career coaching the game he loved after his playing career ended.  A friend of mine who saw him play says; “He was a smaller Magic with a jumper. Michael “Sugar” Ray Richardson “He might have been right behind Patrick Ewing and Bernard King in the minds of Knick fans if not for his personal demons instead of a distant memory.”

Basketball from a fans perspective

The wait is over
I’ve made my choice; of course my view doesn’t matter.  I’m not Sixers Coach Brett Brown or have any connection with the front office.  After watching Joel Embiid in action tonight (versus the Thunder) Jahlil Okafor should be placed immediately on the trading block.  Not because Okafor is a bad player he’s actually pretty good.

Baring injury I believe offensively and defensively Embiid’s ceiling is much higher than that of Okafor.  What do I know I’m just a basketball fan?   In only 22 minutes on the court Embiid had 20 points grabbed 7 rebounds and blocked 2 shots, the Sixers fell to the Thunder 103-97.  It’s been reported rookie Ben Simmons will return in January, give them an adjustment period and the two will be a dynamic double I predict.

1 down 16 to go
The Lakers won only 17 games last year, they only eclipsed the 76ers in wins last season. The win last night over the Rockets started the Lakers on the road to surpass last seasons win total. Basketball remains a team effort however if not for Jordan Clarkson’s 25 points the Lakers might have lost the game.  The guard is in a new role for now he’s the 6th man.  Who else impressed I’d have to say center Timofey Mosgov; I wasn’t sure what to expect.

I witnessed few games Mosgov played last season while a member of the Cavs.  The Laker big man scored 12 points on a variety of shots grabbed 8 rebounds and did a decent job of clogging the lane.  I seriously doubt if Mosgov will allow Laker fans to forget the days of Chamberlain, Abdul Jabbar or Shaq.  Julius Randle’s line was 18 points 7 rebounds and 6 assists and 1 blocked shot.  This team is a WIP, work in progress they are so very young. Clarkson is age 24, Randle 21, Russell 20 and Ingram 19, there is a limited veteran presence.

Baltimore Bullets
We’ve discussed cities the NBA will never return Baltimore is certainly one of those cities.  The most recent Bullets team moved to the Washington D.C. area and eventually was re-named the Wizards.  The original Bullets had a unique history they were founded in 1944 and died in the 1954-1955 season.  In 1944 the team began life in the American Basketball League three years later (1947) they accepted an invitation and moved into the Basketball Association of America. 1948 would be the high water mark as they won the BAA Championship.

Once the merger was consummated the Bullets moved into the National Basketball Association. From near that point on the team suffered on the court and at the box office.  In 1954 with a 3-11 record the Bullets team was dissolved.  Chicago was granted an NBA expansion team in 1961 thus the Packers were born and a year later they made a name change to the Zephyrs.  This team preceded the Bulls existence but could never gain a fan following.  They moved to Baltimore for the 1963-64 season and were re-named the Bullets.  In 1973 the franchise moved to the Washington D.C. area.  As you can see there have been basketball teams with Bullets on the jersey with two different franchises in Baltimore with no other connection other than the city.

Saluki
Don’t worry if you are not familiar with a Saluki neither was I.  It’s a breed of dog also known as a Persian Greyhound.  I’m watching a Knicks-Nets game and Knick play by play announcer Walt Frazier mentioned Saluki’s in the NBA.  Only 10 Saluki’s have played in the NBA with Frazier leading the way.  The 6-4 Frazier would become the 5th pick in the 1967 NBA Draft by the Knicks and is double-double man.  Frazier has been enshrined in the Naismith and College Basketball Hall of Fame. He was a valued teammate in two Knicks NBA Champion seasons.

In addition the former point guard was awarded another honor being selected a member of the NBA 50th Anniversary Team.  After he retired in 1980 he immediately went into broadcasting, he’s been a member of the MSG broadcast team as color analyst for the Knicks since that time. This is but a thumbnail sketch of the basketball accomplishments of Walt “Clyde” Frazier.  Finally TNT broadcaster Craig Sager has nothing on Frazier in the wardrobe department.  Truth is Frazier was wearing wild threads long before Sager arrived on the scene.  Walt Frazier another basketball legend who remains in the game.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Capital of sports
Cleveland was rocking on Tuesday night however it might be a stretch referring to the city as the capital of sports.  You might understand considering the events that took place. The Indians in the World Series for the first time since 1954, for the Cubs it was 1945 the last time they were in the fall classic.  The Cavs were playing the Knicks at the same time.  Home cooking provided invaluable as the Cavs and Indians both won. Prior to the game Cavs players received their 2016 NBA Championship rings.

The Cavs then proceeded to destroy the Knicks final score 117-88 with LeBron having a triple-double in the game.  As for the World Series Cory Kluber Indians starting pitcher led the way in his team securing a 6-0 shutout.  We can only imagine the gigantic traffic jam with Quicken Loans Arena sitting right next door to Progressive Field.  There were 38,091 in attendance at Progressive Field for the World Series game and another 20,562 at Quicken Loans Arena for the Cavs 2016 NBA kick-off.

He remained in-state----just not where I hoped

Carte’Are Gordon the 6-8 257 power forward committed to Saint Louis University.  I guess it might be expected he attends Webster Groves High School in suburban St. Louis.  Kansas, Kansas State and several other schools were recruiting Gordon.  Mizzou was on his list so he did remain in state just not the school I hoped.

Sonics?
You remember Chris Hansen don’t you?  Hansen was the driving force behind a group effort that attempted to purchase the Kings franchise.  The moving vans were prepared to move the franchise to Seattle until.  David Stern listened to last minute pleas by Sacramento and allowed the team to remain in Sacramento.  Hansen not to be curtailed proposed a brand new arena in Seattle to replace Key Arena.

City funds were to be used to build it and last May the city and county said an emphatic NO to the plan.  This week Hansen’s group announced a new plan using private funds to build an arena.  The proposal is more than the arena proposal.  It’s believed if it’s built this should be a drawn for an NHL franchise and for the NBA to return to the Emerald City.

How long?
CBS Sports ran a story citing eight college coaches the writer believe were on the hot seat. Among the coaching names mentioned was Kim Anderson at Mizzou.  Is there a time limit for a recently hire to turn a program around?  I guess it might depend on how bad the program was to begin with.  Perhaps the worst case scenario were Scott Drew took over the scandal ridden Baylor program in 2003.  The school lost most of its top players and worked with a number of reduced scholarships, in addition the school was on NCAA probation until 2010.

Drew certainly was aware of the situation prior to taking the job so he was provided plenty of opportunity to turn the program around.  Today Baylor basketball is competitive once again.  A new hire inherits players recruited by the departed coach, these players either buy it to the new guy or leave.  That is certainly the case at Mizzou a sizable number of Haith recruits remained in place.  Either graduation or transfer reduced the ranks significantly; this is Anderson’s third year at the helm.  To me this is the cut-off year baring major injuries to a teams roster, the third year is the time we witness improvement be it ever so slight.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Level field (court)
It is only a verbal commitment at this point but Miami (FL) topped Kansas, Duke, Florida and Indiana.  Deng Gak a 6-11 200 pound power forward is a 4-star prospect in the Class of 2017 and headed to South Beach.  Can he play might be the question; my response is I have no idea.  The reason this is a story note the who’s who of college basketball Miami beat out.  We can say change is in the air and the court has certainly leveled.

Adidas
It was reported awhile back Knick forward Kristaps Porzingis signed with Adidas.  He was under contract to Nike however they had 10-days to match or exceed the offer Adidas made they declined.  Adidas has made huge strides signing several of the most recent NBA stars however they remain in the rear view mirror of the Nike.

Life is good
Jason Whitlock has been permanently exiled to the outer limits of planet Tau Ceti. Stephen A. Smith is located somewhere on planet Arrakis, I’m unable to locate his former co-host Skip Bayless is “Lost In Space” somewhere.  Mike Greenberg, I have no idea who that might be I’ve never met the guy.  Don’t think this is a national view it’s local too, I cannot remember the last time I tuned into sports talk radio in Kansas City.

Allow me this brief statement; I don’t believe everything I write should be yours.  Many of the above sports persons deem their words to be the gospel.  My opinion must become your opinion is their view.  In this instance I’m applying one of the definitions of gospel; “Something regarded as true and implicitly believed. “ At the same time I have no problem listening to those in the media with credibility, as I indicated “Life is good.”

dictionary.com

Basketball movies
I can state with conviction Hollywood has only done a fair job in filming basketball movies.  I’ve seen a number over the years including a number filmed in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s thanks to cable and broadcast television.  The problem with most of these early efforts is casting, usually good actors, and terrible athletes.  I will not rank them in a Top 10 I’m just going to provide you my assessment.  A number of these movies I‘ve never seen, one in particular is “He Got Game” with Denzel Washington and Ray Allen.

What might be a surprise you I thought “White Men Can’t Jump” is on my list of good basketball movies.  It wasn’t the acting necessarily but the basketball skill exhibited, Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson actually looked athletic.  The movie was directed by Ron Shelton who had a brief minor league baseball career.  Perhaps it was Shelton’s athletic past that leads him to be involved in sports movies maybe it’s a Shelton thing because he wrote the script for “Blue Chips”.  In addition he directed baseball movies “Bull Durham“ and “Cobb.”  The difference in "Blue Chips" Shaquille O’Neal, Penny Hardaway and several other “genuine basketball” players were hired for cameo movie roles.

There are other good stories and basketball action “Hurricane Season”, “Hoosiers”, “Glory Road” and “Coach Carter”.  This is my list there are others who might make the cut those mentioned are from my memory without conducting vast amounts of research.  There have been a number of really bad basketball movies not just the storyline but the basketball.  They are “Teen Wolf” Michael J. Fox and “The Fish That Saved Pittsburg” with Dr. J.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Headed home
The Lakers had a decision, they must reduce the roster to the mandatory 15 player limit by the season opening date.  In a surprising move Yi Jianlian made it easier for the Lakers excusing himself, Yi asked the Lakers to release him thus his return to the NBA becomes short-lived.  I’m unsure how this development occurred but Yi received little if any playing time.  Out of the limited playing time and out of the NBA since 2012 Yi made the decision to return to China.  Outside candidate and former Kansas Jayhawk Thomas Robinson made the roster along with Metta World Peace.  Last years second round pick Anthony Brown drafted from Stanford was released.

The arena
Matt Barnes of the Kings took writer Marc Spears on a tour of the Golden 1 Center in downtown Sacramento.  It reminded me of the change that’s come about in building new arenas across the nation.  The Palace of Auburn Hills is located some 35 miles from downtown Detroit not a great distance but it remains a drive unless you live close by.  The point is The Palace of Auburn Hills might be the last arena utilized by an NBA outside the city limits of a franchise.  Consider just a few of the arenas opened after 1990, Wells Fargo Center, Target Center, Philips Arena, Barclays and Staples are all located within the city limits of the franchise they represent.

In a number of instances the arenas are located in the downtown portion of the city an area that was once abandoned as suburban areas grew.  Perhaps the return to the cities is a sign of urban renewal or maybe a whole other thing.  Although we have no NBA team the Sprint Center and Basketball Hall of Fame are located next door to the Power and Light District.  The P&L District was an urban renewal project which greatly enhances downtown Kansas City Missouri.  As for the oldest continuous use arena (1968) Madison Square Garden will never move from Manhattan, it’s been renovated twice since its opening the most recent in 2011-2013.  If the Chase Center in San Francisco with a planned opening in 2019 will be located inside city limits.

Beware of the Phog
Cameron Indoor, the Dean Dome and Rupp Arena are among the most difficult arenas for opposing teams in the nation.  There is one other, Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence Kansas.  Kansas fans use the phrase “Beware of the Phog” but many in the nation might be unaware of its meaning.  Forrest Clare “Phog” Allen was born in 1885 in Jamesport (MO) about 80 miles northeast of Kansas City.  Phog took up the game at the age of 10 although the sport was new at the time.  In 1904 Allen as a student enrolled at Kansas University and his coach the inventor of the game.  His coach was Dr. James A. Naismith the inventor of the game.

Allen might be the longest tenured coach in history serving at the helm for Kansas basketball from 1919-1956.  After recruiting the legendary Wilt Chamberlain Allen was forced to retire and never had the opportunity to coach Wilt.  The accolades are too numerous to list however it should be noted Allen’s been enshrined in the College and Naismith Hall of Fame.  As for the arena it opened in March of 1955 and has been renovated over the years four times.  Consider this fact; *“Under Bill Self Kansas has a 206-9 record with win streaks of 69, 33 and an active streak of 40.’  With that type of winning streak you can see why the KU faithful say “Beware of the Phog” to fans of opposing teams.

*Wikipedia

Is it just talk?
“Laker fans say there will never be another combo as lethal as Shaq and Kobe.”  Is that view just hot air or anywhere close to the truth.  At this point with the passage of time we only have the numbers to access.  Despite the two butting heads at times I wonder if there have ever been two teammates close to the numbers of Shaq and Kobe.  Just check out these per game scoring numbers in a 5-year run as teammates.

Kobe Shaq
22.5 29.7
28.5 28.7
25.2 27.2
30.2 27.5
24.0 21.5

As proof they were just not a scoring combo they were busy on both ends of the floor.  Kobe was All Defensive 1st team 3 times and 2nd team twice, Shaq was All Defensive 2nd team 3 of the five years.  Both were adapt at passing the basketball to open teammates.  We have no method other than the numbers to provide fans proof of how lethal these teammates were.  Maybe the Laker fans are correct Jordan and Pippen were very good so has Curry and Thompson, how about LeBron and Wade?

Basketball from a fans perspective

Bits n Pieces
“Old” man Brad Stevens Celtics coach turned 40 on Saturday.  Do you realize he’s only a few years older than some veteran NBA players?  Manu Ginobili turned 39 in July.  Jason Terry and Paul Pierce are now 39 while Dirk Nowitzki and Chris Andersen are 38 years old.  40-year old Andre Miller is reported to have retired but are we really sure?

I’ve never ever been fired; I’ve quit a few jobs but never fired.  Maybe that’s why I find Byron Scott’s war of words strange.  I guess if I’d been fired maybe I would hold a grudge too.  Scott has continued to bad-mouth the Lakers and especially VP Jim Buss.  I certainly have made it known I’m no fan of Buss he’s yet to prove he’s got his daddy’s jeans (or is it genes) in developing winning teams.  In any event Scott claims Buss and the Lakers set him up to fail. The big difference no matter how inept he might be Buss (as owner) is highly unlikely to relinquish the reins.

The season is yet to begin and Mizzou basketball doesn’t look good.  It doesn’t look good in the eyes of the media.  Sure Kentucky is pre-season number one in the SEC we should expect that. As for Mizzou the media has picked them for a last place finish again, I sure hope they are wrong.  Auburn and Tennessee improved however Mizzou did too; they only finished 3 games behind number 12 Tennessee.

We hope rule changes don’t slow the game down, at the advent of a new season enforcement of existing rule and news ones are added.  That is the case for this upcoming basketball season. Just two that grab us, traveling will strictly be enforced and don’t be surprised to see double-fouls called.

Undefeated season
I was in a tiny minority during the 2014-15 NCAA season.  Along with several million Kentucky fans I might have been the only one not residing in the state desiring the team finish the season undated.  It was not to be as they lost in the semi-finals against Wisconsin finishing the season 38-1.  I believe many don’t realize how difficult it is to complete a season undefeated.  Over the years there have only been seven teams to win an NCAA Championship undefeated.  They are:

1956 San Francisco Dons
1957 North Carolina Tarheels
1964 UCLA Bruins
1967 UCLA Bruins
1972 UCLA Bruins
1973 UCLA Bruins
1976 Indiana Hoosiers

Jerry West
Laker great Jerry West was one of the best shooting guards in NBA history.  A number of you might not be aware the iconic symbol utilized by the NBA is his silhouette.  West was drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers in 1960 but in the fall the team moved to Los Angeles for his rookie year, he never played for any other franchise.  As for his size in the day and age of taller and taller shooting guards did you realize West stood a mere 6-2 and checked in at 185 pounds.

Although West size is above average in today’s NBA West is a point guard.  The NBA of the ‘50’s and ‘60’s guys who stood 6-5 and taller were small forwards.  This background is intended to inform you among the number of post-season NCAA awards there is the “The Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year”.  A number of outstanding shooting guards are candidates for the award among them Peter Jok Iowa, Grayson Allen Duke and Devonte Graham Kansas.

Exercise
Every heard the story about the guy in the lower apartment?  Every night around 1:00 a.m. the upstairs apartment resident would begin exercising making for a great deal of racket in the lower apartment.  Night after night this routine would prevail, finally one night the resident in the lower unit woke up at 12:59 waiting for the noise which failed to occur it turned out the upstairs resident changed his exercise routine.  That might have been the case for fans of Louisville basketball “waking” up in anticipation of the forthcoming routine.  You remember the story a former assistant had provided women for prospective Louisville recruits.

Although a party atmosphere was supposed to exist prostitution was reported to have occurred. Before the story broke the assistant moved on to a job with UMKC who would terminate him after this news was reported.  After first denying the story Louisville and Rick Pitino agreed the events might have occurred.  It was determined the head coach was likely unaware of the events.  He would be cited for “lack of institutional control” because the assistant was a member of his staff.  Penalties wait although it’s likely they will occur next season.  The talk of legacy again, Pitino and Boeheim at Syracuse are both in the Naismith Hall of Fame.  It’s unlikely their names will be removed however it points out the issue regarding “active” coaches being enshrined in the hall.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Surprising and amazing
This post is the 1,000th publication of Words eye view.  A friend suggested rather than send out emails how about doing a blog.  You have a wealth of basketball knowledge why not?  I had no idea about publishing however with help I under took this pursuit in 2011.  Words was published Monday, Wednesday and Friday until the summer of 2016 when it became a daily publication.

Beginning near the middle of 2011 116 editions were provided for the reader.  Since that time 154 has been the yearly average.  As I’ve indicated this has been labor of love writing about the game I latched on as a youngster.  I hope you enjoy reading Words and will continue.  My hope is to continue writing about “basketball from a fans perspective.”

Dark day in Cleveland
With the exception of the Browns sports in Cleveland are good, the Cavs recent NBA Champions the Indians headed to the World Series for the first time since 1954.  From the past the Lakers had drafted forward Don Ford in 1975 and he played for five seasons.  Ford was certainly an adequate player but no one had an idea he would turn out to be as valuable as he did.  In 1980 Ford was traded to the Cavs along with a 1980 first round draft choice for guard Butch Lee and the 1982 first round pick of the Cavs.

The Cavs finished the season 15-67 which should have qualified the franchise for a high first round pick.  As mentioned earlier the Lakers had that pick although they finished the season with a 57-25 record.  That number one picked turned out to be James “Big Game” Worthy.  No need of going any further with the story other than to inform you he was a key component of Showtime Lakers.  Worthy is also a double-double man enshrined in the Naismith and College Basketball Hall of Fame.  The Lakers might be indirectly responsible for a portion of the basketball gloom that remained over Cleveland until recently.

No more characters
I have stated over and over sports today lack characters.  The characters I speak of are folks who cause you to laugh out loud.  Former Oklahoma Coach Billy Tubbs was one of those characters but there are others.  In a 1989 game against Mizzou fans were throwing trash on the court, the officials requested Tubbs make an announcement to the Oklahoma fans.  Tubbs said; “Regardless of how terrible the officiating is, do not throw stuff on the court.”  Of course that commentary resulted in a second tech and an ejection for Tubbs.

Lawrence Kansas and Columbia Missouri are located less than 200 miles apart about a 3 hour drive. Former Mizzou Coach Norm Stewart hated Kansas so much he refused to spend any money in Kansas. His team would stay overnight in Kansas City and then bus the 50+ miles to the Lawrence campus.  One more story from Stewart, he was asked if he had any McDonald’s All Americans on his Mizzou team his response was classic.  “We don’t have any McDonald’s All Americans but we eat there.”  The late Al McGuire serving as coach at Marquette once said; “The best thing about freshman is they become sophomores.”

Former Jazz Coach Jerry Sloan played for the Bulls during his career.  It might be natural he’d comment on Bulls great Michael Jordan.  “In my prime I could have handled Michael Jordan.  Of course, he would have been only 12 years old.”  “We can’t win at home; we can’t win on the road.  As general manager I just can’t figure out where else to play.”  Pat Williams Orlando General Manager on his team’s 7-27 record in 1992. “The game is too long, the season is too long and the player’s are too long.”  Jack Dolph in 1973.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Losers
We can refer to Kansas, Duke, Kentucky and UConn losers in this instance.  Georgetown received a verbal commitment from Tremont Waters a 5-11 point guard from West Haven (CT).  Waters a 4-star prospect and the number 36 prospect in the Class of 2017.  Kansas, Duke, Kentucky and UCConn along with a host of schools had offers on the table for Waters and he chose Georgetown interesting isn’t it.

Dukeee
Kobe Bryant retired at the end of the season, Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett retired during the summer.  Elton Brand retired today with far less fanfare than the others, Brand waited until the 76ers training camp, he failed to play in a single pre-season game.  Brand was the number one pick in the 1999 draft by the Bulls and shared co-rookie of the year honors with Steve Francis. He would play for four other NBA teams and this was actually his second time with the 76ers. Brand leaves the game with a 15.9 ppg and 8.5 rebounds a game average.  He was one of those guys who was always ready to play basketball, well miss him.

Bits n Pieces
The Missouri Valley Conference founded in 1907 is one of the oldest conferences in the nation. Today the conference lists Bradley, Drake and Illinois State as member schools. Once upon a time the conference contained a number of current Big 10 and Big 12 Conference schools, check it out below:

Iowa
Iowa State
Kansas
Kansas State
Louisville
Mizzou
Nebraska
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State

CBS Sports.com listed a number of NBA players they believed would be traded before the 2016-17 season is complete.  It was interesting the list contained the names of 76ers Nerlens Noel and Jahlil Okafor.  I just checked the article one time however I believe the 76ers were the only team to contain two teammates.  Whether a trade for one or both occur it won’t be shocking. Technically Noel a center at Kentucky was drafted as a power forward/center.  Three consecutive seasons your team drafts a center what’s wrong with this picture?

You might remember I indicated my wife’s cousin played Division II ball at a Missouri school.  In his sophomore high school year I asked him “Where do you want to go to college.”  With no hesitation in his voice he said; “Kentucky” I hesitated in my response saying okay.  I had no desire to criticize his dream of wanting to play at Kentucky.  I wondered how he’d adjust his first year of college ball so periodically I’d go on-line and check his stats.  I judge his first year to be fairly good not outstanding but good.  He played behind upper classmen; the question is an NBA career in his future.  Maybe not but he could latch onto a Euro or D-League team if his game continues to mature.

Laker Coach Luke Walton has Brandon Ingram penciled in for the bench, I’m okay with the move. There is a great deal of pressure on the youngster being the second pick in the draft.  “He’s replacing Kobe Bryant” which is far from the truth Ingram is 19-years old. He’s the same age Kobe was when he first arrived in the NBA back in the day.  Kobe wasn’t ready to play at 19 and neither is Ingram.  That fails to take into account the future is bright for Ingram provided he avoids injury and continues to grow his game.

Phi Slama Jama
Was the nicknamed given the University of Houston Cougars by a Houston sportswriter. Hall of Fame players Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler were members of this basketball fraternity but there were others.  There was Larry “Mr. Mean” Michaud a 6-9 220 pound power forward, 6-7 220 pound Michael Young guard/small forward and Reid Gettys also a 6-7 guard forward.  For several years this crew played the game on a different level, the level was play above the rim.

The Cougars at the time were coached by Guy Lewis who turned the school’s basketball fortunes around; he’d recruited players such as Elvin “Big E” Hayes and Don Chaney to Houston.  The Big E and Chaney would play against Lew Alcindor and UCLA in the Game of the Century played at the Astrodome in 1966.  They couldn’t shoot free-throws for the life of them but called on to dunk the basketball that was easy.  For approximately three years they were among the best college teams in the nation.  When mention of great college teams the Phi Slama Jama teams of Houston must be part of the discussion.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Ranking
Recently I wrote of the deplorable record of Missouri basketball.  I offer further proof, CBS Sports.com ranked the position of all 351 Division I schools.

Missouri State - 142
Mizzou - 162
St Louis University - 278
Southeast Missouri State - 328
UMKC - 338

WIP
A number might be unfamiliar with the term WIP; it simply means Work In Progress.  That fit’s the Lakers based on what I witnessed last night against the Warriors.  Yes it was an exhibition game, yes the Warriors played for the NBA Championship last season.  As for WIP the young Lakers are a new team from the coach on down to several new players.  If this sounds as an excuse for my Lakers far from it, the Warriors are very, very good and the Lakers are very, very young.  Rookie Brandon Ingram had a breakout game for the Lakers.  21 points 7 of 10 from the floor and 5 of 6 from the free-throw line 7 rebounds and 4 assists say outstanding.

Not guilty
Just in case you missed this story Knick guard Derrick Rose and two friends were found not liable of charges stemming from the civil lawsuit filed by a former girl friend.  A question still remains in the mind of amateur sleuths such as me.  This trial appeared to run contrary to most, you have a criminal trial and at times a civil trail much later.

In this instance a criminal investigation was underway while the civil trial was proceeding.  To add to the confusion the lead investigative detective died recently of a suicide the Los Angeles coroner ruled.  The County of Los Angeles plans on continuing the criminal investigation.  Because Rose and friends were found not liable of charges how does that affect criminal proceedings? Notice I didn’t say not guilty I said not liable there is a distention.

The other Kentucky “School”
The Kentucky and Louisville programs are so bright they block out the sun.  In the hearts of the residents you either or for one school or the other.  Western Kentucky in Bowling Green has a rich basketball history but nowhere near the level of Kentucky and Louisville.  Veteran Coach Rick Stansbury was hired to replace the departed Ray Harper who left for Jacksonville State.  *“The men’s basketball program has the 16th most victories in the history of the NCAA and has attained the 8th the best winning percentage in NCAA history.”

Don’t think the Stansbury effect won’t work, consider this fact.  Zion Williamson the number 2 prospect in the Class of 2018 has a Western Kentucky visit scheduled. Williamson is yet to make a commitment to any school but has a scheduled visit at Western Kentucky. As for the incoming Class of 2017 prospects Western Kentucky is listed in the Top Ten by ESPN Recruiting Nation. This should be an indication the school intends to compete with the larger programs including state rivals Kentucky and Louisville.

Basketball from a fans perspective

His goal
Players often establish goals which appear difficult to accomplish.  That certainly is the case for Kristaps Porzingis of the Knicks says he wants a quadruple-double as a goal.  Consider this fact it’s been 22 years since this rare feat was last accomplished in the NBA, how rare you say.  The records  indicate only four players in NBA history have been proficient enough to accomplish it. You might find this even more interesting Hakeem Olajuwon did it twice.

Nate Thurmond Bulls 22 pts, 14 rebs, 13 assists, 12 blocks vs. Hawks
Alvin Robertson Spurs 20 pts, 11 rebs, 10 assists, 10 steals vs. Suns
Hakeem Olajuwon Rockets 29 pts, 18 rebs, 10 assists, 11 blocks vs. Warriors
Hakeem Olajuwon Rockets 18 pts, 16 rebs, 10 assists, 11 blocks vs. Bucks
David Robinson Spurs 34 pts, 10 rebs, 10 assists, 10 blocks vs. Pistons

Marked for greatness
Can you think of any athlete in college or Europe you said; “He’s gonna be a star.”  Other than injury they never reached the level you or maybe the NBA team expected.  A number failed due to injury which curtailed their careers I’m talking about folks who were healthy but we discovered they couldn’t play effectively at the NBA level.  It appears big men have failed more so than others.  Michael Olowokandi is the name that comes to mind first for me.  He emerged from College of the Pacific in Stockton (CA); he would become the top pick in the 1998 NBA Draft by the Clippers.  He came into the NBA after a 22 point 11 rebound 3 block shot a game average.  It was envisioned he’d be close to that at the NBA level. Olowokandi would leave after the 2007 season his numbers 8.3 ppg and 6.8 rebounds for a 7 foot 270 pound player pathetic numbers.

One of the issues NBA great Kareem Abdul Jabbar was a Clipper coach at the time.  It was reported he stated; “I’ve learned all I can.”  Darko Milicic from Serbia was 7 feet and checked in at 275 pounds.  The Pistons would make him the second pick in the 2003 NBA Draft.  2012 would be his last year in the NBA with his 5th NBA team.  He departed the NBA with 6.0 ppg and 4.2 rebounds a game.  Kwame Brown has been documented in the past in words however he too deserves a mention.  How about Shawn Bradley who stood 7-6 inches and 275 pounds, he was drafted with the second pick in the 1993 NBA Draft.  Bradley would leave the NBA with 8.1 ppg and 6.3 rebounds a game.  The Warriors once had a center named Joe Barry Carroll; Carroll was a good player he appeared to not put forth an effort at times.  He was nicknamed Joe “Barely Cares”. Maybe with these athletes it’s a talent issue in other instances it’s an attitude that says I don’t care.

Better than dad
I’m watching the beginning of the Knick-Celtic exhibition game on NBA TV.  A shot of Al Horford and the announcer says “He signed a free-agent contract with the Celtics over the summer. “  My first thought “He’s better than his dad.”  Sons follow their fathers into the game but often they are unable to play at the same level.  We can state with certainty Michael Jordan, Rick Barry and Bill Walton’s off-spring had talent but nothing close to that of their fathers.  I’m sure there are others however those names are off the top of my head.

In the case of new Celtic Al Horford his dad Tito had a rather pedestrian NBA career.  We can say with a degree of certainty if Al stopped playing after this season his career will have eclipsed that of his dad.  We know the story of Kobe Bryant don’t we?  Joe “Jellybean” Bryant was a 6-9 jumping jack.  Over the course of 7 seasons with the 76ers, Clippers and Rockets Bryant averaged 8.7 ppg and 4 rebounds.  This is no criticism of his talent however Mitchell Wiggins was a journeyman NBA player.  As for son Andrew besides scoring Rookie of the Year honors he is on the road to an All-Pro career.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Welcome to the 21st Century
On Sunday I wrote the NCAA ruled against Army veteran Isaiah Brock of Oakland University. College studies while serving in the military were outstanding however his high school grades were below par.  Based on high school he was ruled ineligible to play by the NCAA. Brock served a combat tour in Afghanistan and received commendations for his military service as a mortuary affairs specialist.  On Monday the NCAA changed its mind and declared Brock eligible immediately, the organization is to be thank for finally arriving in the 21st Century.

Thank you Cavs
The Blue Jays could win the next game however it appears the Indians are on the way to the World Series.  In Cleveland the sports world has been in an upward trend since the Cavs broke the Cleveland post-season losing streak.  The last time the Indians were in the World Series 1954, the last time they won it all 1948.

After the Cavs won the NBA Championship it must have provided the Indians inspiration to play better baseball.  The Indians rushed to the top of the Central Division and dispatched my Royals. We’ve had an NBA Championship in Cleveland we could have a World Series Championship and then we have the poor NFL Browns.  The Browns are not adding to the winning tradition in Cleveland with a 0-6 record as this is written.

Luke’s Lakers
This kinda rolls off your tongue, “Luke’s Lakers.”  That’s much better than Scott’s Lakers or Mike’s (D’Antoni) Lakers.  Okay maybe I’m reaching and yet the team is yet to play its first regular season game.  From what I read the tone in Laker camp appears to be so different from past years.  Sure there have been roster changes but it’s more than.  One thing for sure I refuse to set my expectations too high, check back with me in April. Improvement for me is at least 30 wins that would be 12 more victories than the prior season.

Bits n Pieces
In a move only the Big 12 can explain the conference decided to forego expansion for the time being.  As I indicated expansion is beneficial more for football than other sports.  At the same time Big 12 basketball would certainly be improved adding an UConn or Cincinnati to the mix.  For someone in the middle of Big 12 country this is a strange move.

In Chris Bosh news don’t expect to see the power forward on the court this season.  It appears more and more likely the Heat will not release Bosh, at the same time they are not inclined to clear him medically.  It might be 2017-18 before we see Bosh on a basketball court again.

My favorite sport is___________
There is no argument in America its football more specifically the NFL version.  I pose the question due to conversations I’ve had in the past with more than one.  An acquaintance once informed me “I watched the NBA all the time until (Michael) Jordan retired.”  I didn’t have the heart to inform him he wasn’t an NBA fan he was a Jordan fan.  No argument with being a fan of Jordan but he’s informing me retirement caused him to quit following the NBA.  Today we could make a similar statement about Kobe or Timmy the most recent superstars to retire.

Kobe and Tim Duncan will be missed by fans of the NBA however I could add this statement.  True fans of the sport remain fans no matter who is on the court.  I could exclude Kobe and provide you with five or six retired Lakers who might have caused me to quit watching the game.  My wife’s cousin loves him some LeBron James, he developed this at the time LeBron was first in Cleveland and he remained loyal while in Miami and returned with him to Cleveland.  I wonder if Danny will quit watching the NBA once LeBron hangs up his sneakers.  I believe we can be fans of team and the individuals on that team but it is difficult for me to hear someone take the Michael Jordan loyalty as first mentioned.

Basketball from a fans perspective

“State” of the union
The State of Missouri doesn’t contain population numbers close to those of California, Texas, New York or Florida.  Missouri has 40 colleges and universities spread throughout the state however only five play at the Division I level.  This account began as something else until I uncovered a story behind the story.  This is tragic, Not one of the five schools had a winning record in the 2015-16 basketball season.  That’s not to say they haven’t been winners in the past but is basketball this bad in the state?  I offer no explanation for this peculiar matter however Missouri State “leads” the way with 13 wins.

Missouri State 13-19
University of Mo-Kansas City 12-19
Saint Louis University 11-21
Mizzou 10-21
Southeast Missouri State 5-24

Will not occur
The ESPN.com headline read; “Will Kings trade Cousins” referencing the Sacramento center. We don’t know if this will occur however I’d take him on the Lakers.  The Kings and Lakers are in the same division so it’s unlikely a trade of this magnitude would ever occur.  Allow me to use my imagination and work out a trade to benefit both teams.  I love Jordan Clarkson but he goes so does Nick Young along with Timofey Mozgov.

The Lakers get Cousins and Ben McLemore.  I have no idea if the money works out for the players’ names but you see I’m thinking future.  Cousins has sometimes been a head case since his arrival in the NBA.  Beneath the surface I believe Cousins wants to be coached.  Can Luke Walton reach him I don’t know, I do know this he was able to establish a relationship with Mike Malone and was very upset at the time the coach was fired.  Hey Mitch Kupchak (Laker GM) do it.

Lighting striking twice
Despite the myth lighting can strike twice in the same spot.  It’s possible the founders of ABA2000 believed lighting could strike twice in the same place.  In 1967 the American Basketball Association came into existence the intent was to rival the existence NBA. Through several years of franchise movement discussions began regarding merger.  In 1967 four teams (Spurs, Pacers, Nets and Nuggets) merged and became part of the NBA in 1976. Perhaps that was the belief in 1999 when ABA2000 was founded.  Red, white and blue basketball, three-point basket it had all the trappings of the original ABA.

After beginning the league with eight teams the ABA has now morphed into an 84 team league (yes I said 84), the ABA spread to every nook and cranny of the country.  Even more interesting Kansas City has a team at present I didn’t know existed and I doubt if any of my fellow citizens are aware either.  The original ABA team the Knights played from 2000-2006 and were good.  In fact they were the 2001-2002 ABA2000 champions finishing with a 35-5 record.  The present version of the ABA lacks credibility, I’m unsure if a league with 80+ teams and no national television would ever gain traction with basketball fans.  Back in 1999 the founders of the latest version of the ABA might have believed “lighting striking twice” again.

Best in the state?
Oskaloosa is a town located about 75 miles southeast of Des Moines as the crow flies.  The 2012 population of the town indicates nearly 12,000 folks live there.   Many other cities and towns in Iowa much larger populations however Oskaloosa might have the best high school player in the State of Iowa.  Even more surprising Xavier Foster is yet to play his first game for Oskaloosa High.  Foster is a 6-10 200 pound forward who began growing his game while playing for AAU team Pure Prep Academy out of Urbandale (IA).

His coach indicates there are aspects of his game which must improve which is funny in a manner of speaking.  At 14 he continues to grow and might possibly reach 7 feet once he becomes an adult.  According to a USA Today claim Foster stood 3 feet 5 inches at the age of 2.  Again this is certainly not intended as a prediction of future success just an interesting prospect to store in your memory banks.

Villanova
Sitting in the Midwest I admit I was blind-sided by east coast Villanova winning the 2015 NCAA Tournament.  Don’t misunderstand they were good but good enough to win it all I didn’t think so. Just to let you know I wasn’t completely in the dark I went back to last season to check and it appears I wasn‘t alone.  Villanova began the season in 12th place moved up to 7th and the first post-season poll they were in 2nd place.

Big East Conference
Every season once training camp begins I long for the Big East Conference.  Oh sure the conference still exists but not as it once did in its glory years.  Georgetown, Syracuse, St. John’s and other independents came together to form the Big East.  Although several conference members fielded football this was a basketball conference.  It was formulated for basketball, its strength was basketball.

Boy was it good back in the day, Chris Mullin at St. John’s, Pearl Washington Syracuse and Patrick Ewing at Georgetown just three of the outstanding players the conference produced at the time.

There were a number of outstanding winning coaches, Big John Thompson at Georgetown, Lou Carnesecca at St. John’s and Jim Boeheim of Syracuse plus Rollie Massimino at Villanova.  There was no single reason for the demise of the conference but it all came apart in 2013.  The American Athletic Conference came into existence which includes several former Big East Members. Syracuse, Providence and Boston College left for a number of reasons.

He’s a power forward
Carte’Are Gordon is a 6-8 257 pound power forward.  Generally in high school sometimes there is a refrain from using the term small or power to describe front court players in high school.  The primary rationale youngsters continue to grow in height and weight.  This requires a departure due to Gordon’s 257 pounds; in any event Gordon attends Webster Groves High School in suburban St. Louis.

He’s a 5-star prospect in the Class of 2018 and Mizzou is on his radar with an offer.  The competition is intense for his services, 13 other schools indicate interest in Gordon such as Kansas, Notre Dame, Texas and UNLV.  It sure would be a coup if Mizzou could wrestle him away from any of the high profile programs after him.

Bits n Pieces
ESPN Recruiting Nation published its Top 10 recruiting class for 2017.  In case you didn’t see it the usual suspects are missing.  There is no Kentucky, Kansas or Duke that make the cut. At the top of the list are Washington and Lorenzo Romar, they have 4 top prospects planning on arriving at the Seattle campus next August.  In a surprise second place with three prospects is Auburn and Bruce Pearl.  Several other schools are surprise additions to the list among them Western Kentucky, Butler and Creighton.  Don’t get too excited it’s early a significant number of 2017 prospects are yet to sign or announce a school choice.

Kansas basketball and its world-wide web continue to attract talent from all over to Lawrence Kansas.  The school invited a number of potential prospects to Late Night at the Phog the annual first night of basketball practice.  Kansas announced the verbal commitment of one of the prospects; he wasn’t a senior or a junior.  High school sophomore Markese Jacobs from Uplift Community High School in Chicago announced he was headed to Kansas, he‘s a 5-11 point guard.

The ESPN Network is clearly the leader in the number of college basketball telecast.  The Fox Network is in third place followed by a number of smaller cable networks.  In the upcoming 2016-17 CBS with its broadcast network and cable network is challenging ESPN in numbers. They announced a television schedule of 270 games spread across CBS Sports and CBS Sports Network.  Their broadcast arm continues to host the semi and finals of the NCAA Championship.

I’m glad Jeremy Lin is back in New York City, that’s where he first came to prominence in the NBA. I believe he’s ready for the Big Apple the second time around.  As a Laker fan I cannot say with conviction he got a fair shake in Los Angeles.  I’m not sure what occurred prior to that with the Rockets.  From his statements he wanted to remain with the Hornets however it appeared it just didn’t work out there.  The aggressive Nets signed Lin to a 3-year contract indicating they wanted him for the long-haul.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Midnight Madness
I was confused, Kansas held Late Night at the Phog on Saturday October 1.  Based on this occurrence I communicated the college basketball season had begun---I wasn’t completely correct.  According to ESPN.com “Rule changes in 2013 gave teams more flexibility on when they could start their practices.”  On Friday evening (10/14) Kentucky and North Carolina held their version of Midnight Madness.  A number of other schools plan on hosting similar events on this upcoming Friday and Saturday, sorry for the confusion on my part.

Bits n Pieces
Wonder why NBA basketball exists in “small market” Salt Lake City?  The ABA Los Angeles Stars were unable to survive in Lakerland the franchise was moved to Utah for the 1970-71 season.  Although successful on the court the ABA Utah Stars were hemorrhaging money, once the merge occurred the franchise was dissolved.  All was not lost for the fans in Salt Lake City the New Orleans Jazz would move to Utah in 1979 where they have since remained.

The NCAA missed the boat once again on a life issue.  A former Army soldier at Oakland University was declared ineligible to play this season.  Isaiah Brock’s high school numbers were not top notch is the basis for NCAA ruling.  He’s taken college courses and maintained a 3.0 grade point average however that fails to appease the NCAA.  While in service Brock was awarded four medals plus a certificate of achievement.  Brock’s allowed to practice with the team and will be able continue his enrollment he just can‘t play for now.  I for one believe the NCAA should allow Brock to play.

I will continue to root for the University of Missouri-Kansas City despite the fact it’s in the “wrong” conference.  The Western Athletic Conference or WAC is rather youthful compared to the Big 10, SEC or ACC only coming into existence in 1962.  The name implies member schools are located in the western portion of the nation and that was the case until more recently.  As defections have occurred (UNLV, New Mexico, Colorado State) members from other portions of the country were added.  That’s actually why the conference now includes UMKC as well as Chicago State.

Number two remains in stiff competition for athletes with number one.  Kristaps Porzingis although just 21 years old was under contract to Nike with Nike through October 1.  Adidas has signed Porzingis however there remains an out.  Nike can match the offer.  Stay tuned to see if Nike regains the upper hand in this shoe deal.

What to do---what to do
Coach Brett Brown says Joel Embiid might be ready to play back to back games.  In addition both Jahlil Okafor and Nerlens Noel both recovering from surgery should be ready for the season opener.  I certainly am not trying to micro-manage the team but three (3) centers and not one prepared to play backup center. Those are my words and not those of the coach or management.

Basketball from a fans perspective

He’s leaving
Fox Sports 1 is attempting to raise its NBA profile, FS1 launched August 2013 is lacking the expertise of an ESPN.  Based on this brief history they reached out and hired Chris Broussard from ESPN.  Broussard has covered other sports for ESPN but generally known for covering the NBA for the network.

Pre-season All Conference
Depending on the portion of the country are world the initials might not be familiar.  I’m going to point out again UMKC stands for the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  From this point forward I’m going to just write UMKC and hopefully it will become familiar to you.  In any event there is news ahead of the season.

Local UMKC guard Martez Harrison (University Academy KCMO) was honored along with teammate LaVell Boyd.  Harrison was a first team selection while Boyd was picked for the second team.  Boyd is a 6 foot guard and also a senior, home for Boyd is Chicago.  Boyd was the second leading scorer for UMKC behind Harrison with a 14.1 ppg clip.  WAC coaches project UMKC to tie for 5th place in the WAC Conference.

Not BFF’s
I’m not sure when I wrote this piece I mentioned recently the friendliness of many of today’s NBA players.  I would guess Draymon Green and Paul Pierce will not be considered "best friends forever", they are likley to not exchange birthday, Christmas or any other type of friendly acknowledgment.  Green took exception by Pierce and other to the issue regarding Kevin Durant signing with the Warriors.  “Give it a break nobody complains when somebody leaves Apple for Google” Green said.

Its likely Rick Barry loves this
Unless you are a certain age or an NBA historian the name Rick Barry might not be familiar. Barry’s been out of the spotlight for a number of years after serving as an analyst after retirement.  Barry’s NBA career led to induction into the Naismith Hall of Fame and College Basketball Hall.  Over a 14-year NBA/ABA career his lowest free-throw percentage was .862 in his rookie season (1965-66).  For 7 seasons Barry was at .900 or higher, the guy rarely missed a shoot from the free-throw line.  The year prior to retirement Barry missed nine of 169 free-throw attempts a .947 percentage.  I’ve mentioned this previously he shot his free-throws under hand or “granny” style.

He’s recommended over the years poor to average shooters should adopt it.  The Rockets have a rookie forward on their team Chinanu Onuaku who shoots his free-throws “Rick Barry” or “granny” style.  At this point we have no idea if Onuaku makes the final cut but its interesting his manner of shooting free-throws.  According to the Huffington Post Onuaku adopted this style because he was such a poor free-throw shooter.  He improved his percentage from .470 he shot as a freshman to .590 in his sophomore year, hey DeAndre Jordan hear that?  In 8 seasons the highest percentage Jordan has shot is .525.
