Home and home series
The Columbia Tribune is reporting the University of Central Florida and Mizzou will begin a home and home series between the two schools.  The first game will be played in Orlando this winter with the date yet to be confirmed, next season Mizzou will host in Columbia.  7-6 Tacko Fall will face off against 6-10 Michael Porter Jr. at least once this season which should be noteworthy.

I’d be careful if I were you

Are you planning a Vegas style bet or just one with several friends?  You base your wager on words expressed by Stephen A. Smith on his ESPN program First Take.  Part of the problem Smith’s been wrong more than right as was pointed out previously.  Beginning with the 2011 NBA Championship through 2016 Smith has picked the wrong team each and every time.

In defense of Smith some might say “He’s (Smith) really brave he’s set himself apart by choosing to pick a winner something many of us are afraid to do.”  I could agree with the statement except Smith has always painted himself as an NBA expert.  Don’t you think an expert should be able to pick at least one maybe two winners in that time frame?  For the 2017 NBA Championship beginning on Thursday Smith’s picked the Warriors, should Dub fans be worried?  I don’t know about them however I would be concerned.

Conspiracy stories
I cannot speak for the world I can’t even speak for America.  I can make this statement with conviction; there are many here who believe in conspiracies.  Most of these stories are quite serious however others cause us to sometimes laugh out loud.  You‘ve heard some of the theories; alien autopsy at Area 51, the moon landing was faked, secret societies control the world are just a few of the hundreds.  Yahoo Sports wrote a story “17 Myths about the NBA you Shouldn’t Believe.”  Without reading the article are there stories regarding the NBA you believe despite no evidence?  Write them down; discuss them with your friends.

Sometimes……
You hear stories which are just that----stories.  Is this worth the time, well I’m gonna take the time. This is the argument, “the draft lottery serves no purpose only the Spurs, Cavs, and Warriors have a legitimate chance of winning an NBA Championship.  Players in the lottery every year still don’t improve.”

I believe that view is overstated, there is much more to a team competing besides the lottery. Competing teams must be able to assemble adequate talent around those lottery picks.  A front office able to sign quality free-agents in addition adding to the roster by trades than proves beneficial.  Finally the last part is having a coach capable of coaching at a playoff level.  The lottery is a stop-gap; you must improve in all the area mentioned in order to truly compete.

It’s nice but means little
USA Today released its pre-season Top 25 list last week.  The list contains the usual suspects except the team they selected at 24.  Get this the number 24 won a grand total of 8 games all of last season yet were placed with the best of the best for the 2017-18 season.  Myron Medcalf of ESPN did the same, his pre-season Top 25 had Mizzou at number 25.  Mizzou is in some rarified air and yet to bounce a basketball or attempt a shot yet.  The tribute is no longer shocking (to me at least) I half-way expected it, am I comfortable with the status accorded Mizzou?  Although it’s nice the key to success is winning on the basketball court not in the newspaper.

Another story
There are Laker stories that contain vampire qualities, everytime you believe you have driven "a stake through the heart" of the account it rises once again.  Last week it was Byron Scott and his report being fired from the Lakers a year ago.  This time its former Commissioner David Stern’s view of THE TRADE.  Stern vetoed a trade which sent Chris Paul to the Lakers, him voiding the trade drastically affected life in Lakerland over the last past four years.

On two separate occasions the former NBA leader defended his part in the trade, today I read something unknown from then.  Stern claims Laker GM Kupchak “panicked” over aspects of the trade.  I’m not going to do a word for word or line for line re-cap of the Stern statement however my question why is he re-hashing this now?  These actions took place in 2011 six years ago and I‘ve attempted to forget actions which have impacted the Lakers since then.

Montana
We say Montana and basketball is not you’re first thought.  We think first of vacation, visits to Glacier or Yellowstone National Park.  Tourism and travel are keys for Big Sky Country Montana certainly not basketball.  The most famous former NBA player might be Phil Jackson born in Deer Lodge Montana. Jackson would play at his college ball at South Dakota State before spending the bulk of his NBA career as a member of the Knicks.  PJ would later begin his coaching career under the tutelage of Red Holtzman then serving as head coach of the Knicks.

PJ led teams would win 11 NBA Championships, 6 with the Bulls and 5 with the Lakers.  Since 2014 PJ has severed as President of the Knicks. Michael Ray Richardson grew up in Denver, from 1974-1978 Richardson played his college basketball at the University of Montana.  He was drafted by the Knicks in 1978 but later played for the Warriors and New Jersey Nets.  As for the collegiate level n Missoula is the University of Montana a Division I program and the Grizzlies compete in the Big Sky Conference.  In the City of Bozeman is Montana State University also a member of the same conference.  There is one Division II school in the state and six NAIA schools competing on the basketball court.

Wow
Now and again you come across one of those stories…..“He (she) didn’t really say that did they? “ This one involves former Tar Hell  Rashad McCants who was drafted by the Wolves in 2005; I remember his time at Carolina more than his NBA years.  He played until 2009 with the Wolves and that last season with the Kings.  He continues to play at 32 but its minor league basketball. McCants first made off the court news in 2014 when he announced he’d taken phony classes at Carolina and tutors had written much of his class work.

Although McCants made the claim he never backed up his story to the NCAA which contacted him.  He’s made news once again in Bleacher Report with this headline; “Former NBA player Rashad McCants thinks Khole Kardashian Hurt Pro Career.”  He claims the NBA blackballed him because of a past relationship with reality star Khole Kardashian.  We don’t know the complete story however it’s highly unlikely a reality television personality is the basis for McCants short 4-year NBA career.

Wanna play, I’m not sure
We focus on North Carolina, Kentucky, Louisville and Duke.  Those basketball programs and other compete every season for an NCAA Championship.  A number of schools continue to play basketball but certainly nowhere near the level they once did.  San Francisco University of USF is the first school that comes to mind.  Bill Russell and company winning back to back NCAA Championships in the ‘50’s placed the program in rarefied air which continued for a number of years.

The school remained competitive until the 1980’s when NCAA violations and a Self-Imposed Death Penalty witnessed the decline of big-time basketball at the school.  The Loyola Ramblers won the 1963 NCAA Championship, the Chicago team played competitive basketball until the late ‘60’s. Since that time the program under a succession of coaches has only been a little better than average.  There are likely other schools missed in this report these two are the focus however they are are not the only schools to downgrade their programs.

NBA Summer League
As the calendar approaches Jun and then Jul we began looking toward NBA Summer League play. Rookies plus a number of second year players will gather to work on various aspects of their game.  Over the next few weeks we witness an NBA Champion being crowned, the NBA Draft and Summer League basketball.  Action begins in Orlando July 1-6 followed by action in Utah July 3-6. Play will conclude with 24 teams competing in Las Vegas Jul 7-17.

Is it possible?
99 NBA fans out of 100 probably think free-agent Chris Paul will sign an extension with the Clippers. The point guard becomes a free-agent July 1 and at 32 might be looking at one more max contract before retirement.  The Clippers can afford to pay far more than the Spurs should the Texas team consider going after Paul.  According to ESPN the Clippers could sign Paul to a $205 million 5-year contract versus the $152 million the Spurs could waive in front of his face.  Both teams (Clippers & Spurs) are old by NBA standards; the question becomes which team has the best playoff advantage?  It should be interesting to see how this story plays out over the next several weeks and months.

In state rivalry
There is no clear explanation why Kansas State and Kansas refuse to play Wichita State.  To a degree I can understand the refusal by Kansas they gain little in winning folks will say they should have won, losing the game shame on you for losing to a Valley (now AAC) team. Kansas basketball is the crème de la crème of college basketball and they have no need to play Wichita State unless it’s in the NCAA as occurred several years back.

As for Kansas State that’s a different story, sorry alum and fans of the program the Wildcats profile is not as extensive or as impressive as in-state rival Kansas Jayhawks.  This play schedule might change at least for Kansas State, according to the Kansas City Star Bruce Weber is now considering scheduling Wichita State.  He further indicated he believed K-State needed a presence in the City of Wichita.  The newspaper pointed out the two schools haven’t met since 2003.

The NBA on television
The National Football League traces its explosion in popularity to television.  Although television has been key to the growth of the NBA it may have began on a slower pace as the NBA moved back and forth between a number of broadcast networks.  The 1953-54 season saw the Dumont Network (now defunct) telecast a 13 game Saturday afternoon package. Due to the limited number of stations in 1954-55 the NBA moved to the NBC Network games would be telecast through the 1962 season.

In 1965 ABC acquired the games and would hold them through 1973.  1973 would see the CBS Network acquired broadcast rights and would retain them until 1990.  In 1990 NBC would enter the picture once again with broadcast rights through 2002.  In the early ‘80’s the NBA began expanding viewer ship by expanding to cable television partners.  First it was The USA Network covering 1981 through 1984, TBS from 1984 through 2002 and TNT from 1988 through the present time.  ESPN began broadcasting game in 1983-1984 and then from 2002 until now.

NBA TV came on the air in 1999 and began selected telecasting games a number of years later. The present broadcast partners are ESPN/ABC, TNT and NBA TV.  Between 1962-1965 no NBA television contract existed, at the time J. Walter Kennedy took over as NBA Commissioner securing another network broadcast contract was a chief goal.  Expansion would occur while Kennedy was in charge but television, the all-seeing eye was his chief goal.

Basketball from a fans perspective

We are there
The match we believed would occur all along is upon us, Thursday Jun 1 it begins.  The Cavs losers of one game during their playoff run and the Warriors suffering not a single loss.  Along the way LeBron James managed to break Michael Jordan’s all-time playoff scoring record extremely noteworthy.  Does America have a favorite between the two?  I’m unable to answer the question however I believe we are in for an NBA Championship of epic proportions.

I’m going to take liberty with the classic 1950 Betty Davis line from “All about Eve.”  Davis stated at one point during the movie; “Fasten your seat belts its going to be a bumpy night (championship run).”  Someone might say I’m scared because I refuse to choose one team over another.  It is TRUE I have no idea who wins this series before it begins, there are others much braver than me ask them for a winner.

Returning to school
We covered the news earlier Tacko Fall was returning to Central Florida for his junior year. Another high profile athlete made the news choosing to also return to school.  Hamidou Diallo was enrolled at Kentucky but did not play this past season.  The 6-5 Diallo decided to access his draft status in early May so he decided to attend the NBA Combine in Chicago.

Diallo would register the highest vertical leap in Combine history but that feat alone would not convince him he was ready for the NBA.  He was informed it was likely he would be a late first round pick and may have been the deciding factor in Diallo returning to Kentucky. Even more interesting he should add to the talent pool for the Wildcats this upcoming season.

Is it over?
Carmelo Anthony’s life off the court and on it appears troubled over the last several months.  I’m not going to cover the personal side because I believe that’s his personal space.  As for the Knicks it seems Phil Jackson has “traded” Carmelo in the media throughout this past season. He will turn 32 at the end of May so he should have 2-3 productive years remaining in his NBA career.

Two issues, Carmelo has a huge contract which another team must absorb in a trade.  As for the trade portion Carmelo has a no-trade provision in his contract.  He could be traded to the Celtics but ultimately refuse the trade.  The Knicks want to receive warm bodies whether through a trade or free-agency.  We shall see how this plays out.

This is bothersome…..
You might think Mizzou is playing with the Big Boys that include Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina and Kansas.  The announcement of Jontay Porter to Mizzou caused the letters to come flying in once again.  Mizzou basketball has been downright terrible for the last three years from reading the letters you’d believe otherwise.  I’m not going to detail the critical remarks however I’d like to refer those writers to Kansas basketball and the late Ed Manning.  Manning had a very talented high school son you might remember the son’s name ------Danny.

Ed was a teammate of head coach Larry Brown at the time both were in the ABA.  Brown hires Manning and Danny enrolls at Kansas where he became an All-American.  Danny played his first game for Kansas in 1988 and led his Jayhawks to the 1988 NCAA Championship.  I’m unsure if this was the first father-son combo to join as assistant coach and player however check the date this occurred.  Those critics of Mizzou’s actions all I can say is get a life please. This is not the first time as evidenced above and it’s highly unlikely it will be the last.

May 2017
The tandem of Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak are no longer in place.  It was late winter when Laker President took control of the team removing her brother and firing long-time GM Kupchak.  It was April of 2016 when the tandem of J. Buss and Kupchak declined the option on Coach Byron Scott. Why are we again discussing this over a year after Scott was let go?

I checked the CBSSport.com NBA page and there it was; “Ex-Lakers coach feel betrayed by team.”  Scott was one of my favorite Laker players and I said as much.  The problem he wasn’t a very good coach and his record proves it.  This is my belief; those in charge last year are no longer in place so why do we continue to discuss this issue now?

Basketball from a fans perspective

Bits n Pieces
It appears Daddy Ball is a man of his word in one area at least.  Danny Ainge announced Lonzo has declined a workout for the Celtics.  I guess it’s not surprising in a manner of speaking.

Central Florida Big Man Tacko Fall is returning to school.  He’s withdrawn from the NBA Draft; I’d stated my belief at least one more year of year of competitive basketball would be beneficial to the 7-6 youngster.

Solutions Research Group (Canada) provided us proof of our beliefs.  “Basketball is the second most popular sport with millennial” in the nation.  Although the article didn’t provide the information we guess NHL hockey is first but basketball is in second place.  Canadian football is probably third followed by soccer (world football) and baseball.

I’m disappointed, the Big 12/SEC challenge has been announced, January 27 is the date for all 10 games.  Although big time programs Kentucky and Kansas will play Mizzou with the number 6 recruiting class of 2017 is excluded.  Really I understand the best SEC versus the best Big 12 teams.  Maybe this season Mizzou makes the cut but not last season.

I laughed out loud
This is probably only funny to me so excuse me while I laugh out loud.  .  At this point in time we have no idea if Laker forward Brandon Ingram is a legitimate NBA star he came on strong near the end of the season.  The former Carolina Tar heel struggled during much of the early to middle portion of the NBA season.  The other day I stopped a moment on one of the ESPN channels hearing the Lakers being a topic of discussion.

This person (not a current or former player) indicated he wasn’t sure of the future success of Ingram.  I just took his statement in stride until Thursday’s news; I checked the ESPN.com NBA and the headline jumped off the page.  “Brandon Ingram is the only untouchable player on Lakers roster so said President Magic Johnson.  Hmmmm……kinda sounds as if Magic’s made up his mind while the ESPN guy remains undecided.  I’m really confused whose view do I take as valid?

The piece of paper
Former Texas point guard received his degree recently; Ford had a 9-year career for three NBA teams.  He left Texas for the NBA without graduating as a number whose eyes were on the NBA. Ford now has that piece of paper and joins a host of former players who returned to complete their course work.  They include; Damian Lillard, Jeff Green, Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal and Vince Carter just to name a few.

Change coming
I’d mentioned this earlier, beginning May 29 Words eye view will return to its original format.  On that date it will become a Monday, Wednesday, Friday publication.  Special editions will be published in between time if the news is deemed worthy.  My thanks to all of you for continuing to read Words eye view, please refer it to friends and family who enjoy reading about basketball at all levels.

Number 2
Unlike his over the top father Lonzo Ball appears to be a quiet yet talented young man.  Will the Lakers make him their first pick next month in the NBA Draft?  Only time will tell however I believe the Lakers will have a Laker number 2 jersey available draft night.  Fooled you, thought the headline was about Ball being the 2nd pick rather than his jersey number.  Ball is a true point guard in the old fashion sense although he‘s not particularly athletic, expectations are high for Laker fans.

Until I read differently its likely D’Angelo Russell will be moved to the off-guard, Ball to the point. Former Mizzou guy Jordan Clarkson will likely be the first reserve off the bench; this is interesting in that Clarkson can play both guard positions.  What do I expect in 2017-18 you ask?  Last season I wanted 30 wins to prove they were returning to competitive basketball.  A late season 5 game winning streak was a key to the Lakers finishing 26-56 a little short of my projection.  Is 35 wins a possibility, how about 40 wins, yes that’s it my sights are set on 40?

The w(h)ine and cheese crowd
Everywhere this time and leading into the college season we hear talk.  THEY inform us “college basketball is in trouble, one and done athletes are ruining it.”   I too am uncomfortable with the numbers who only attend one year to play in the NBA but ruin the game-----I doubt it. More than likely there will be no more undefeated NCAA Championships.  Florida was the last team (2006-07) to string together back to back championships another accomplishment we are unlikely to see.

We must travel back to 1972 to see the last back to back NCAA Champion (UCLA) so the tide had begun to change much earlier than the “whine and cheese crowd” acknowledge.  There are a number of issues the NCAA needs to address in the future, the body moves in slow motion at times but still has the best interest of the game in mind.  Although the championship is a one game match versus a possible seven game NBA series March Madness is extremely popular even with people who don’t consider themselves basketball fans.  In closing don’t listen to them they always see the “glass half empty rather than half full.”

Unknown draft prospect
We might hear the name Justin Patton draft night announced, unless you follow Big East Basketball or Creighton University he’s an unknown.  Patton is not easy to overlook he stands 7 feet tall and weighs 230 pounds however that’s not always been the case.  As a high school freshman he was a spindly 6-2 and even he admits he “couldn’t walk and chew gum at the same time. “  He would become a red-shirt freshman at Creighton.

Last season was enough to convince the Omaha native he was ready for the NBA, 12.9 points and 6.2 rebounds a game.  DraftExpress.com and NBADraft.net indicate he will be taken after the lottery selections have been selected.  The only downside Patton suffers from the Big Man’s dilemma he‘s a poor free-throw shooter (.517).  Patton is the same as numerous other players profiled, this is no indication of future success in the NBA.

Basketball from a fans perspective

It’s good to be a Tiger

Sometimes it is difficult to realize how far Mizzou basketball has traveled since March 15, 2017. The March date was the date Coach Cuonzo Martin was hired.  Mizzou fans suffered through n 8-23 record in 2016-17, the year prior 10-21, the worst records in the schools basketball history.  The March date mentioned was the Cuonzo Martin hire and from that point it’s been a wild roller coaster ride.  This is not in chronological order but the series of events which unfolded over the course of March, April and May.

Point guard C.J. Roberts from the Dallas metro was a Kim Anderson commit but that didn’t prevent the new coach from flying to Dallas meeting with the youngster and his family.  Result Roberts decided in favor of remaining committed to Mizzou.  Signing Papa Porter to the coaching staff was the first domino.  Son Michael Porter Jr. the number one prospect in nation Class of 2017 signed with Mizzou, 4 star prospect Blake Harris from North Carolina also signed with the Tigers.

Then Kassius Robertson a 6-3 shooter from Canisius signed on the dotted line.  We end for now with the addition of 6-11 235 pound Jeremiah Tilmon a 4 star prospect from East St. Louis.  Late as this was being completed Jontay Porter made his committent know he will join his brother.  I’ve read a number of letters from folks who know more than me which is certainly possible.  I‘ve also discovered their knowledge of basketball exceeds that of Cuonzo Martin and his coaching staff.  They (the mysterious they) have already predicted a negative outcome for Mizzou basketball this season.  They point to a “Ben Simmons‘ affect for this team which I seriously doubt.  They also point to the fact Martin teams have never been great, good recruiter average coach.

I hate Manu Ginobili!
Years ago at a time the Lakers were a competitive team it might not have been but it seemed to be him most times.  To a degree the Lakers were able to control a young Tony Parker; Tim Duncan couldn’t hold Shaq although I could state the two probably neutralize one another.  It seemed Manu was always hitting a crucial shot, playing tough hard-nose defense or doing something else to help his Spurs beat my Lakers.  Manu is now 39, his outstanding NBA is about to conclude, it might be within a short space of reading this or it could be next season.

Manu was chosen in the second round the 57th pick in 1999, you realize the significance of that draft don’t you?  Manu was one pick short of being the last player chosen in the 1999 draft.  To refresh your memory Duke’s Elton Brand was the first pick in the first round by the Bulls.  John Celestand (remember him) was the first pick in the second round.  Manu’s had a brilliant NBA career despite the fact I once hated the guy, it appeared it was always him over other Spurs player leading the way in defeating my Lakers.  As this is written we don’t know if this is year last or next to last, this we know for sure.  Next stop for Manu is the Naismith Hall of Fame.

You either love him or hate him
I believe I told my first Dick Vitale story but its worth repeating.  Years ago I was watching game and my wife came walking through the family room.  She stopped turned and looked at the television and then looked at me.  “What is wrong with that guy” she asked me as he might have utilized one of those many phrases he’s become noted for.

Don’t worry he’s coming back; ESPN announced he’d signed a contract extension and will appear through the 2019-20 season.  I’m unsure but I believe the former coach might have been among the first analyst hired by the network having been hired in 1979-80. Congratulations Dickey V., to those who love you hurrah and those who hate him.  You might try muting the sound on your television if you don’t want to hear “aircraft carrier”, dipsy doo”, “glue” or “elevator guys.”

He was actually the star player
Josh Jackson stands 6-8; Frank Mason III is 5-11.  Jackson arrived at Kansas with all sorts of accolades, it was said he would be a one and done player (which he did become) headed to the NBA.  As for the other guy…..well.  That OTHER guy Mason III proved to be the heart and soul of Kansas basketball; it was my belief Kansas would not have been as successful with the efforts of Mason.  It’s not just me; check out the honors accorded him:

National College Player of the Year
Bob Cousy Award
Consensus First Team All American
Big 12 Player of the Year
First Team All Big 12

I don’t remember if Mason was on the NBA’s radar at the beginning of his senior year.  He is now and it’s possible his grit and work ethic might place him on some teams NBA roster.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Did they lie down?
No Isaiah Thomas no matter the Celtics won anyway.  I wonder if the Cavs looked the Celtics warming up and seeing no Isaiah Thomas figured “We got these guys beat.”  It’s likely the Celtics will not win the next one but this one was important to them especially for their pride. They won in Cleveland no less, pretty amazing don’t you think so?

Can it get any Spring(er)?
I realize there is no such word but bear with me, in Kansas City it’s been overcast most of the day. Thunderstorms have occurred off and on however in Columbia 150 miles away the sun is SHINING! The news regarding the Tiger program continues to excite, today Jontay Porter made his commitment know.

The 6-9 225 Porter will join his older brother Michael Jr., there is no indication as this is written if the younger brother intends to re-classify.  Its likely Michael Jr. is a one and done and this would allow both brothers to play on the same team.  Whatever occurs as I said at the beginning the sun is shining 24-hours a day in Columbia.  It is difficult for Mizzou fans to contain their excitement regarding the school’s basketball program.

Bits n Pieces
He will be missed; he didn’t fit the mold of the bombastic John Calipari or the “old shucks’ of Roy Williams. Fisher didn’t coach with the intensity of Coach K. however he was a winner.  I’m referring to Steve Fisher recently retired San Diego State coach.  Fisher first gained notoriety as coach of the Fab Five at Michigan and won the 1989 NCAA Championship there.  Fisher would later move west and placed SDSU on the college basketball map.  The 72-year old retired at the end of the 2017 college season.

Strength versus weakness is this title.  In May the ESPN college page is questioning if Kansas can win the Big 12 for the 14th straight year.  I look at this issue different from most; they applaud the continued success on the court for Kansas.  I say bravo but what does that say about the strength of the conference?  After Mizzou moved to the SEC I continuously read Kansas City Star articles pointing out the success of Kentucky but the conference was weak.   No argument Kentucky has been highly successful in the SEC but so has Kansas in the Big 12.

The move from metro Kansas City to Santa Ana California has proven quite beneficial for Bol Bol. Bol a 7-2 power forward finished the high school season strong and is now playing AAU basketball.  The short list interested in securing his services includes Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky, Oregon, UCLA, Mizzou and Oklahoma.

You think an NBA team is going to put up with someone with no credibility complaining about his son’s teammates?  I doubt it very seriously, if it should occur at some point we can point the finger at ESPN, Fox Sports and other media sources.  This might be premature but I don’t believe any team will put up with condescending statements about the team from a roster members father.  I might add a person with 0 NBA experience.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Mr. Big Shot
The Atlanta Hawks are searching for a general manager.  Among the names that surfaced is Chauncey Billups a.k.a. Mr. Big Shot.  Billups played for a number of teams but earn the nickname while a member of the Pistons.  Billups is currently serving as an NBA analyst for ESPN/ABC.  As for the GM position he is competing with a number of candidates for the position.
Injuries
You’ve heard since you first began following sports of all sorts, “Injuries are part of the game. “ We realize that fact but it certainly lessens the fact of the win.  Okay 10 years from now no one will likely be aware Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard, guard Tony Parker and Celtic guard Isaiah Thomas were missing in action.  Of course they sustained injuries which sidelined Parker and Thomas for the duration of the playoffs, Leonard is day to day.  The players mentioned are key members of the Spurs and Celtics and with neither in the lineup….well.

Just a number but interesting
Rock M Nation a Mizzou website asserts the number has now changed.  You remember earlier in the spring it was reported earlier the school’s Class of 2017 was ranked 10th best in the nation. Rock M Nation says the addition of Jeremiah Tilmon “moves Mizzou up to number six.” I know numbers don’t mean anything its production on the court that is key.  Nevertheless this is quite interesting to those of us who are Mizzou fans.  It’s been a rought several years and hopefully the sun is finally shining on Mizzou basketball.

The other guy
Laker fans are concentrating on the second pick; will it be Lonzo Ball, Markelle Fultz or somebody else?  We have no idea but for me I’m more curious about pick 28 and 33 in the second round.  I’m going to don my Luke Walton/Magic Johnson hat and state with conviction this next part.  Gone will be veterans Metta World Peace, Nick Young and perhaps Luol Deng. Mozgov remains due to his contract but plays limited minutes.  It’s likely the second round pick will be traded although we remove three veterans we cannot add three rookies to the roster.

NBA centers
If you compiled a Top 10 list of all-time great centers who is on your list?  Interesting in that Lew Alcindor (Kareem Abdul Jabbar) is top on my high school and college list, where does he rank in the NBA?  Drum roll (use your imagination please).

10.  Moses Malone
  9.  George Mikan
  8.  Bob Lanier
  7.  Walt Bellamy
  6.  Nate Thurmond
  5.  Willis Reed
  4.  Hakeem Olajuwon
  3.  Wilt Chamberlain
  2.  Kareem Abdul Jabbar
  1.  Bill Russell

Honorable mention
Patrick Ewing
David Robinson

This was considerably tougher than I first believed compiling a Top 10.  Your list might be totally different but that’s okay.

Basketball from a fans perspective

MVP….MVP….MVP….MVP
NBA fans have been yelling MVP since-----well like forever, it really has no impact except to express the belief of the arena gathering.  I’ve made it clear I’m no LeBron fan, the guy is super talented he’s an NBA Champion several times over he is also a multiple MVP recipient.  I stated late in the season I thought James Harden to be my MVP.

I said this despite the Westbrook pursuit of a tie with the Oscar Robertson triple-double record. I overlooked Kawhi Leonard although it wasn’t intentional.  With that said you and I discover last week LeBron James name IS NOT in the mix for 2017 NBA MVP.  One of the aforementioned players other than LeBron will be league MVP.

No….please no
Tacko Fall has not hired an agent that‘s the good news.  Reports indicate he’s worked out for the Magic, Lakers and one other team I cannot remember.  The report further indicates he’s got plans for two more visits to be run through a series of drills.  From Larry Laker to Tacko I scream loudly NOOOOOOOOOOO!  Tacko still indicates he’s unsure if he will continue to pursue life in the NBA or return to college for his junior year.

I stated last week I believed college over the NBA and continue to believe that’s best for him. There are others whispering in his ear that might be informing him he’s ready for the NBA (he’s not).  The deficiencies I noted in a previous account haven’t changed, can he move from point A to B of course.  He’s not going to do that languishing on an NBA bench, in addition I‘m unsure how much instruction Tacko might receive playing on a D-League team. So there you have it the dilemma should I stay or should I go?

It’s the coach man…..not always the school
Prospects are attracted to schools with winning programs; they are also attracted to that coach. I’m unsure if it 60-40 coach versus the school or maybe even higher.  In this age its not unusual for a prospect to change his mind if the school changes coaches, here’s where I’m going with this story about Cuonzo Martin.    After reading the account I skipped down to the comment section, one letter in particular caught my eye.  The commitment of Jeremiah Tilmon to Mizzou was met with bitterness with at least one writer.

His response to the ESPN story indicated he believed Tilmon was committed to Illinois until “snake oil salesman” Martin showed up at his doorstep.  Well that‘s not exactly the manner this account played out.  I wonder why the writer failed to overlook Illinois had fired John Groce earlier in the spring.  Groce recruited Tilmon and its obvious Tilmon’s desire was to play for play for THAT coach.  I’m not going to attempt to address the snake oil comment except to say I don’t believe Cuonzo Martin is pulling the wool over any prospects eyes.

Best ever for me it’s easy
A number of discussions are never resolved, this is one.  I read the headline; “Who is on your list as the best high school player ever?”  We have plenty of candidates to choose from among them LeBron, Kobe, Oscar, Chamberlain and Jerry Lucas.  Who is on your list, only one name comes to mind for me, Lew Alcindor.  Alcindor played his basketball at Power Memorial all-boys Catholic High School in New York City now closed.

Alcindor arrived at the school as a 6-8 freshman, during an amazing stretch (1961-1965) Power never lost a basketball game.  The win streak would reach 71 games before they lost to DeMatha (Maryland) 46-43.  During his high school career Alcindor would score over 2,000 points and grab 2,000 rebounds leading the way as the school became a national basketball power.  Power Memorial’s record 79-2 while Alcindor was on the team.  Much later in college Alcindor would convert to Islam and in his second year in the NBA became Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Stay tuned
I turned the game off, unless you are a Cavs fan or a Celtics die hard why bother with a blow-out game?  It was Cavs 66 Celtics 29 with 2:48 minutes left in the 2nd quarter in TD Garden no less when I changed channels to Royals baseball.  I'm sure most of us believed the Celtics stood little chance in this series but this is ridiculous.  You can catch the final score on SportsCenter or some other outlet.  There is no requirement to attempt to dissect the game from this corner.

I don’t agree
I read a winner-loser account for the 2017 NBA Lottery; I stopped reading the CBS Sports story when it referred to Magic Johnson and the Lakers as a loser.  They make this statement because “He must deal with Lonzo Ball for the next eight years.”  Allow me to step in for Magic a moment and make this statement, if there is a future problem with Ball or a member of his family you trade the player to another team it’s that simple. As this was being completed a story broke indicating Luke Walton is checking with UCLA to determine how “He who shall not be named” impacted the program at the school.  It might be wise for “He who shall not be named" to dial his commentary back a bit.

Draft choices
Just assembling draft choices serves no purpose its production on the court that calculates. With that said check out the Celtics, not only are they in the playoffs but they have managed to secure the top pick in the 2017 draft, Danny Ainge’s Celtics also have pick 17, 37, 53 and 56. Interesting in that Doc Rivers left for the Clippers maybe figuring the trio of Allen, Pierce and Garnett had peaked.  It’s been a short four years however the Celtics have become competitive again and have become a playoff team once again.

Interesting in that Rivers current team has failed to advance as far as his former team.  Trust the process has been the theme in Philadelphia, the Sixers are not as far down the road as the Celtics but consider this.  They have pick 3, 36, 39, 46 and 50 in the 2017 draft, late second round choices (37 and beyond) have not necessarily proven beneficial.  Both teams appear to have a plan in place so we shall see if the Sixers are able to rise to the level of the Celtics and become playoff contenders.

The Goat
The basketball exploits of Earl Manigault a.k.a. “The Goat” is the basis for an urban legend.   Manigault was the best of a number of playground legends in NYC in the '60's and '70's.  It was reported the 6-1 Manigault could pick up a dollar off the top of the backboard and replace it with quarters. Another story or legend Manigault was able to double-dunk, he would dunk the ball catch it and dunk it again all while still in the air.  He might have been one of the original high flyers and would often dunk the ball over players much taller than his 6-1.

These legends have perpetuated over the years whether true or not we‘ve not been able to locate anyone who can verify the accounts.  Hidden in legend is also his nickname it was said opposing players had difficult pronouncing his last name and simply shortened it to The Goat. Another story claims a teacher couldn’t pronounce his name and identified him in class as Mani-goat.  He was a legendary NYC street player playing mostly in Harlem’s famed Rucker League.  One publication described him as “The Greatest Player You Probably Never Heard of.”  The Goat was not much of a student expelled from high school he’d finish at a North Carolina prep school.

From there it was Johnson C. Smith College where he clashed with the head coach and was on his way back to NYC.  The Goat suffering from depression got involved in drugs and went to prison but would later turn his life around.  The last few years of his life were dedicated toward youth as he wanted them to avoid the pitfalls which befell him.  Kareem Abdul Jabbar asked who the best player he ever played against was “That would have to be The Goat”.  A testimony of his basketball prowess, the Goat died in 1998 of congestive heart failure at the age of 53.

Cap
We are only hearing one side of two stories, when the Cap speaks we listen.  The Cap is Kareem Abdul Jabbar Hall of Fame center for the Lakers and author of several books.  Do we believe Kareem or should we believe Dwight Howard and Andrew Bynum might say?  Let’s look at Howard first, Laker fans might remember Abdul Jabbar was serving as a Laker Big Man coach, he worked with Howard and Bynum.  Howard would leave the team after one year and reports indicate there were problems with Kobe Bryant.

There may have been problems with Kobe however according to Kareem some of the problems might he Howard related.  Interviewed Kareem said; “Dwight Howard didn’t want to do any work.” Not surprising in that Howard always appeared to not work on his game, he seemed to utilize his skill alone.  As for Bynum; “I don’t think Andrew (Bynum) was that interested in playing basketball.”  If he’d stuck with it I’m sure he would have been better.”  Two players one out of the league the other hanging on to what is left of a career that could have placed him among the elites of the NBA.

Texas by way of Harlem
6-11 Mohamed Bamba is the number two prospect in the Class of 2017, he is/was one of the last of the uncommitted remaining.  It was generally believed Calipari and Kentucky had the inside track with Duke a close second.  Mizzou also made an offer however I didn’t hold my breath. Despite what the experts believed Bamba’s made his decision known.  He’s headed to Austin to play for Shaka Smart and Texas.

After a last place finish in the Big 12 Texas looks significantly improved adding talent at several positions.  In addition to Bamba the Longhorns add point guard Matt Coleman, shooting guard Jase Fabres and power forwards Royce Hamm and Jerico Simms.  Bamba is a 5-star prospect while the others are 4-star prospects.  As for Bamba he's from Harlem (NY) his parents emigrated to the U.S. from the Ivory Coast a West African nation.

The coach
Not only did Norm Stewart coach Mizzou he was a Tiger athlete prior to serving as coach.  A player from 1953-56 he would play one year with the St. Louis Hawks, he also signed a major league baseball contract but never played.  In 1961 he was hired as head coach at State College of Iowa (Northern Iowa) where Stewart remained until 1967.  In the fall of 1967 Stewart was hired by his alma mater the University of Missouri where he served until 1999.  No Final Four appearances however numerous NCAA appearances during Stewart’s 29 year tenure at Mizzou.

The school announced a statue of the former coach would be erected outside the arena soon. Norm Stewart was funny without intending to be, he hated Kansas so much his teams would stay in Kansas City (MO) hotels for the night and then bus to Lawrence.  The reason he didn’t want to spend a dime in the State of Kansas.  The other story I related a number of times but will repeat one more time.  Questioned about McDonald’s All Americans at Mizzou.  The coach said; “We don’t have any McDonald’s All Americans but we eat at McDonald's.”  The coach was inducted into the College Hall of Fame in 2007; the statue is overdue for The Coach.

Bits n Pieces
Steph Curry is now sporting a beard.  Is this an effort on his part to hide his “baby face”?  Any man able to grow a beard is definitely a grown man.  Yours truly is fully grown but unable to accomplish the task of a full beard like Curry.

The job might be too much for one person to handle, I speak of those NBA coaches who also serve in some personnel capacity.  The Hawks removed their coach, they didn’t fire him just took away the responsibility of acquiring players.  I have long believed this might be one of the issues holding the Clippers back.  Reading the account the Clippers have a bunch of coaches in the front office. Stan Van Gundy (Pistons) and Tom Thibodeau (Wolves) also wear “two hats.”

We’ve discussed the growth of NBA basketball world-wide, that now extends to the nation of India. The Bhullar brothers have been drafted in the NBA the game remains in its infancy.  All that might change now, In May the NBA opened a Youth Academy in New Delhi for 21 youth prospects. Hopefully they will become the nucleus for the future of continued basketball development in the nation.

You remember Kobe Bryant’s dilemma don’t you?  He received a great deal of grief when he married his parents said they were concerned about his age.  Many years later Kobe “fought” with his parents over memorabilia they attempted to sale he believed was his property.  Kobe haters were all over him in both cases; sometimes you must divorce “your parents.”  And that’s what you do as a draft choice kick to the curb “He who shall not be named. “

Comparison
The late Manute Bol was a semi-novelty on the basketball court.  His son Bol Bol is a player, dad all 7-6 would block shots and would become a good 3-point shooter. The son can do that and more as he moves gracefully around the court at 7-2 215 pounds.  This I believe will be a “Kobe” comparison, remember Kobe’s game was light years better than Joe Bryant.

After Manute retired from the NBA his family moved to the metro Kansas City area.  Bol Bol’s talent would first be demonstrated at Bishop Miege High School in metro Kansas City. He’s now enrolled at Mater Dei in Santa Ana (CA) and is the number 7 prospect in the Class of 2018.  There are 12 schools on the trail on this youngster including Mizzou.  The only issue one of the others is John Calipari’s Kentucky Wildcats.

New logo
As indicated earlier this year the Pistons are moving into Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit in the fall.  They decided to adopt a new logo which was revealed on Tuesday.  I checked it out expecting “new and improved” version and was disappointed in what I saw.  You need to look at the logo and formulate your own opinion. It looks remarkably similar to the one the team utilized from 1979 through 1996.  Check out a photo of the new logo on the net, see for yourself if you agree with me.

Conspiracy theories
This is written Wednesday morning after the lottery was held.  We are there already accusations the FIX was in.  The Lakers with the possibility of losing the pick won by securing a top three pick. On the surface consider this fact; the last three seasons have witnessed 26, 17 and 21 wins. The Lakers have missed the playoffs four consecutive seasons.  The lottery has become a regular part of business every May during this time period.

The NBA as with any pro sport desires its teams to be successful on the court or field.  Is the fix in allowing the Lakers to secure a top three pick?  I’m sure the possibility exists however the down side is being caught.  Your sport goes right into the toilet no one I mean no one is interested in following your sport.  Why risk such a path which could allow devastating results if uncovered?  I’m actually okay if you hate the Lakers I’m not okay if you believe the NBA is going to allow the Lakers to WIN the lottery.

Thanks but no--thanks!
John Madden now retired might have been the first.  He’d been a highly successful coach of the NFL Oakland Raiders but he gave it up.  Madden served as an analyst for such a long period of time I’m sure there were youngsters who only knew Madden in his television role.  Later Bill Cowher would do the same give up a successful NFL coaching career with the intent to return to coaching and never looked back; he became comfortable in his role as a television analyst.

In basketball the college game analyst are former coaches Dick Vitale, Bill Raftery and Fran Fraschilla, providing insight to the NBA game are ex-coaches Hubie Brown, Jeff Van Gundy, Mike Fratello, Kevin McHale and Doug Collins.   These coaches gave up coaching for television and appear to have no desire to return to the dog eat dog world of coaching.  Other than Van Gundy do you ever hear their names mentioned regarding coaching changes?  A number are older now and probably wouldn’t be considered but they probably would say thanks but no thanks.

Draft Lottery
Who goes number one in the 2017 draft is the question now the order has been established; it’s Celtics, Lakers and Sixers.  We must wait to actually determine the selection.  I continue to believe the Celtics will select Markelle Fultz the Lakers might be a totally different matter.  Given the opportunity to draft Lonzo Ball, Josh Jackson or De’Aaron Fox we must wait and see. Although this draft like must in recent years is young it’s stocked with a vast amount of potential talent.

Stepping up
Game 7 in TD Boston Garden the Celtics should be expected to win…..maybe.  I always compare games of this type as heavyweight boxing matches.  The Celtics delivered the knockout blow 115-105 despite the 38 points Wizards guard Bradley Beal scored.  As for the Celtics they were led by Isaiah Thomas however he was ably assisted by Kelly Olynyk.  Yes I said Olynyk, the Celtic reserve came off the bench scoring a career high 26 points.  Next up for Boston the Cavaliers of Cleveland.

“I’m tired”!
Perhaps the Wizards plain ran out of gas, all five starters played heavy minutes with Beal topping out at 46 minutes.  Three reserve players with 16, 11 and 3 minutes that’s all.  We could make the same statement regarding Russell Westbrook however his issue occurred during the season. Playing heavy minutes in an attempt to tie the Oscar Robertson mark its likely he too ran out of energy once the playoffs began.

Witness the Rockets and James Harden, key to their success was worn down from heavy minutes.  I’m sure if we questioned Westbrook, Harden and the Wizards starters it’s likely they don’t admit it but consider this fact.  By the time the playoffs roll around teams have played 100+ games counting exhibition and 82 regular season.  The NBA is not going to reduce the number of games played but just to put this in perspective, Team A loses and sometimes the reason might be simple they are tired.

His shot
We’ve watched Lonzo Ball’s funny looking shot all season long at UCLA; it appears he’s shooting it sidearm.  I’m no “shot-doctor” so I certainly am making no claim Ball’s shot is not effective or might not work in the NBA.  A number of players have arrived in the NBA over the years with “funny looking shots.”  Off the top of my head Reggie Miller is the first player that comes to mind.

Reggie could shoot the basketball maybe it was his form that always looks strange to me. Michael Jordan’s Bull teams had Bill Cartwright at center during several championship runs. See if you can locate him on YouTube and you will discover what I’m talking about.  As for Shaq its clear why he most often dunked the basketball his shot looked terrible.  There are others click on the link below and check out a number of other NBA players from the past and present.

San Francisco
Call me a purist if you wish, there are some issues which require correction.  The Warriors name needs to be re-introduced.  Once the Warriors move across the bay I hope to see resurrection of the iconic “The City” jersey.  You say it’s not that big a deal, probably not but it would ease my conscious.

Most of us are Golden is attached to the State of California, after the team moved in 1971 to Oakland.  Teams are not always named after the city they play.  As an example; Arizona Cardinals, Texas Rangers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Minnesota Wolves.  See where I’m going with this in the instance not the state precedes the team name Golden State says nothing, It might be better if they were the California Warriors.

Lose some win some
For the first time in recent memory Mizzou has been in the mix this year for the nations top high school prospects.  Part of the success was predicated on signing Michael Porter Jr. the number one prospect in the Class of 2017.  Porter Jr. and several other prospects allowed Mizzou to land in the Top 10 in the nation.  Trevon Duval was a 5-star prospect who attended IMG Academy in Bradenton Florida.

There were a number of “blue blood” programs across the nation after his services.  The point guard finally made his decision known, he‘s on the way to Duke.  Duval should settle the point guard position one that’s been somewhat shaky in the past for Coach K.  Mizzou loses one but gains another, 6-10 center Jeremiah Tilmon announced on Monday he’s going to be a Tiger. Tilmon is a 4-star prospect from Coach Martin’s home town (East St. Louis).  The only question now is the status of Jontay Porter.

Okay
The two main sources I peruse for draft information have changed their view on the Lakers choice. Point guard De‘Aaron Fox from Kentucky and Kansas shooting guard Josh Jackson are their choices, is Lonzo Ball out of the picture not likely?  This is the key; the draft lottery held tonight will solidify team positions however the players selected is another matter.

New faces in new places
It seems at the time new arenas that serve as home to NBA teams the college game is not far behind.  Barclays Center in Brooklyn and Golden 1 Center in Sacramento opened their doors to the college game.  The same scenario will apply once Chase Center opens the arena will serve as host for the 2022 NCAA Men’s Basketball West Regional’s.  This will be the first time San Francisco has served as host city for the NCAA’s since 1939.

Further east and one year sooner the Red Wings and Pistons will make room in Little Caesars Arena for college basketball too.  The arena will host the first and second rounds of the 2021 Men’s Basketball Tournament.  So far the yet to be named Milwaukee arena has announced no plans other than Bucks basketball.  Marquette and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the city, the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus is 2 hours drive-time from Milwaukee.  Most likely we’ll see the arena host college basketball games at some point as well.

99% of the time
A large number of freshmen and sophomores enter the NBA draft every season.  We have no idea who might be ready and who needs additional seasoning.  One of those I believe requires additional work is Tacko Fall.  You remember the 7-6 youngster who plays for the University of Central Florida.  Playing for a new coach and adjusting to the speed of the game Fall was light years ahead of his freshmen year.  Despite the superlatives tossed his direction Fall is not ready for the rigors of the NBA.

Thanks to cable I saw practically every game the youngster played this past season--true it was television but the warts were evident.  Fall is a natural at blocking the basketball, the negatives his strength and his offensive game.  In reverse order in my mind it’s not critical he scores with a good NBA point guard he might average 11 or 12 ppg. Although he checks in at 310 pounds his lack of upper body strength has witnessed smaller and lighter players out rebounding him. Fall needs at the very least one additional season of competitive basketball.  What do I know I’m just a rabid basketball fan?

A new sheriff in town….maybe
If you are knowledgeable regarding Shaquille O’Neal he’s always been involved in law enforcement. He’s been a reserve deputy sheriff and has even gone on patrol on occasion. Shaq’s indicates he might run for sheriff in 2020 giving no indication whether its Georgia or Florida, he owns homes in both states.  The big guy is an unpaid comic but I believe he’s serious.

Basketball from a fans perspective

I missed it
Unfortunately work prevented me from viewing the Spurs-Warriors game.  If you attended the game or saw it on television you have more insight than me, you might anyway.  I walked into the break-room it was the middle portion of the 3rd quarter the Spurs were clearly in command by 20+ points.  Imagine my shock and amazement, at a point work slowed I took out my IPhone to check the final score and once again found myself stunned, final score 113-111.

Nicknames
Oftentimes a player’s nickname supersedes his given name, on other occasions the nickname becomes that player.  In baseball we had the legendary Babe Ruth and Babe was not his given name, it was George Herman Ruth.  A number are familiar with Penny Hardaway few realize his given name is Anfernee.  He was Earvin until a Lansing sportswriter witnessed how he distributed the basketball, if was if it was magic.  He would rename the youngster Magic for his newspaper while Earvin was still in high school.  The nickname stuck with Ruth, Hardaway and Johnson over the course of their careers.  While others the nickname became identified with them, Flash is Dwayne Wade, Pistol Pete is Pete Maravich, there are others:

Kareem Abdul Jabbar-The Captain or Cap
Ray Allen-Ray Ray, Jesus Shuttlesworth
Giannis Antetokounmpo-Greek Freak
Carmelo Anthony-Melo
Nate Archibald-Tiny
Charles Barkley-The Round Mound of Rebound, Sir Charles
Brent Barry-Bones
Chauncey Billups-Mr. Big Shot
Larry Bird-The Hick from French Lick, Larry Legend
Kobe Bryant-Black Mamba
Steph Curry-Baby Faced Assassin
LeBron James-King James
Pete Maravich-Pistol Pete
Shaquille O‘Neal-Diesel, The Big Aristotle
Dwayne Wade-Flash, D-Wade

You’d be reading all day unless I excluded a number of players.  In the case of others like Shaquille O’Neal he’s got so many nicknames I chose the two familiar to most of us.  One more rule, the Neil Rule you cannot give yourself a nickname someone must bestow on you.  I once worked with Neil and he stated that was his rule which I’ve adopted.  King James is suspect since he nicknamed himself.

Should I stay or should I go
This is the 1982 by the punk rock group Clash but also the dilemma facing a great number of early entry NBA prospects.  A number require two maybe three years of college play (See Tacko Fall later).  There becomes the problem you return to college and risk injury with could end your career or impact your draft stock.  What is the answer you ask, I’m happy you ask because I have it.

The prospect needs to seek wise counsel not from dad or Uncle Joe someone who has no skin in the game.  That could be an agent or front office person surely they would provide you clear evidence if you are ready for the NBA.  So there you have it sounds simple on the surface and it is---seek wise counsel.  The real dilemma a number will not and leave them in the Twilight Zone un-drafted and unable to return to college.

Duke curse
You know it, successful college player failure in the NBA.  Certainly applied to J.J. Redick great shooter at Duke in the NBA another story.  Redick had NBA talent but there was an adjustment and the right team.  Redick was the 11th pick in the first round of the 2006 draft by the Magic.  It took awhile for him to blossom but once he begins to show signs he was traded to the Bucks.

The Bucks traded Redick to the Clippers in 2013 where his career took off.  He became the spot up shooter the team needed a reliable 3-point specialist.  With free agency coming up this summer there is speculation he might be headed elsewhere.  Redick wants a pay raise but so do Blake Griffin and Chris Paul.  It’s possible the Clippers can resign all three players but is that the direction they intend to travel?  July 1 will arrive soon we will see.
