BASKETBALL FROM A FANS PERSPECTIVE

He is among the élite already?
Rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs might be one of the best.  He’s been compared to the best quarterbacks to play in NFL history after a brief four games.  We’ve often mentioned those multi-talented athletes and Mahomes fits in that category.  The 6-foot 3-inch 230-pound Mahomes pitched a no-hitter while in high school and also scored 49 points as a member of the school's basketball team.  Oh I forgot, he also played football for Whitehouse High School in Whitehouse (TX) 140 miles southeast of Dallas, is there no sport this guy isn't good at?

Is the bottom about to fall out?
After a year’s investigation the trial has begun on the improprieties existing with college basketball and recruitment of high-profile athletes.  Several prominent programs and coaches’ names have been mentioned thus far.  It’s far too early for me to speculate until judgement is rendered, I do have a question for you.  Hypothetically speaking if a player receives unauthorized payment which the coach was unaware who is penalized?  Should the school be placed on probation for an incident not connected to the coach?  Those questions and others will be answered over the next few weeks and months.

Local guy makes good
It’s likely I know more about Sixer rookie Landry Shamet than most Sixer fans.  There's a clear reason why, he’s a local kid having graduated from Park Hill High School.  In all honesty I don’t remember his name being mentioned among the elite of Kansas City high school talent 5 or 6 years ago.  Coach Gregg Marshall must have seen something in Shamet most coaches missed, he offered the youngster a basketball scholarship to Wichita State.

Although Shamet was vital to much of the success of Wichita State on the court there were names across the nation more highly touted (and known) than his.  The Sixers made him the 26th pick in the first round of the 2018 NBA draft, the team has depth at the shooting guard, so he might not earn a great deal of playing time in this his rookie year.  I must conclude the Sixers believe Shamet has NBA talent.  In addition, it’s my belief he’s a local young man and I truly want him to succeed, in any event don’t forget the name.  It’s Landry Shamet and he’s a 6-foot 5-inch shooting guard.

This will prove interesting
I didn’t have an opportunity to see the exhibition game between the Sixers and Magic, I did note the fact Markelle Fultz was in the starting lineup.  On Tuesday I checked the box score and saw that he and Ben Simmons were listed as point guards.  From the scoring and assist numbers it would appear Fultz was at the shooting guard and Simmons was at the point.  The depth at the guard position is not good news for Landry Shamet as I indicate above.  As for the Sixers it appears Fultz shoulder surgery must be successful and points to plenty of depth for the team in the back court.

I’m not surprised
E.J. Liddell made his choice known on Monday evening, he left Mizzou and Illinois waiting in vain.  He would choose Ohio State and compete for a front-court job in Columbus.  Early on it appeared he and Mario McKinney would be a package both having played on the same St. Louis area AAU team.  In any event Mizzou Nation is likely disappointed but not despondent.  Coach Cuonzo and staff will find a replacement for Liddell.

A writer for Rock M Nation Mizzou’s website appeared to be down in the dumps about missing out on Liddell.  I’m a “glass half full guy rather than half empty.”  This line was from a country and western song, the late Don Meredith would refer to it often during the days he worked NFL Monday Night Football.  You got to dance with the one that brung you”, work with what you have in front of you.  Mizzou lost out on Liddell end of story, move on to the next prospect out there.
