BASKETBALL FROM A FANS PERSPECTIVE

“What have you done for me lately”
A small number of Mizzou fans are singing the 1986 Janet Jackson hit, “What have you done for me lately.”  I’m not sure of the date however one fan questioned why Michael Porter Sr. remained on the coaching staff.  “His son (Michael Porter Jr.) is in the NBA now.”  I guess he believed there was no reason to retain senior.  Another said, “After last season’s splash in recruiting with the number one (or two) Class 2018 is blah.”
Let’s check out both comments, Coban Porter remains in high school, is he as good as brothers MPJ or Jontay we don’t know.  The youngster is good enough to earn a roster spot on his high school team.  Michael Porter Sr. doesn’t fill the role of recruiter/staff that task belongs to Cornell Mann, despite this fact I’m sure he offers coach Cuonzo insight during games.  As for the recruiting class Mizzou is not Duke or North Carolina, you can’t hit a grand-slam every time at bat.  I certainly hope Mizzou never falls off the edge of the earth again, as for Mizzou Nation give the coach a break please.
Next year
I’m unsure whether I placed my thoughts in print but here goes.  I believe my Lakers will earn a playoff spot beyond that is any one’s best guess.  I’m looking at the 2019-20 season for the Lakers to compete for an NBA championship.  Several free-agents will be available to add to the roster, who should it be?  Naturally I have no power to negotiate anything however I’m going to provide you my preferences.  The key point I cannot be penalized for tampering.  At the top of the list is Anthony Davis, the 6-foot 10 inch (or 11) forward/center would be the ying to LeBron’s yang.  A front court of LeBron and Davis could be outstanding, and the defense could be all-world.
Slipping to second place is Kawhi Leonard, we’ve already discussed his all-around ability.  In addition to his scoring capability he’s an outstanding defensive presence.  In third place is Jimmy Butler, he can score the ball what I like most is his work ethic.  That’s the chief matter why he wants out of Minnesota, i.e. the commitment of teammates.  The only reason Klay Thompson resides in fourth is Klay, once July 2020 rolls around we might hear a different story.  Currently he’s indicating a reluctance to leave the Warriors, can we blame him?  There are others Kyrie Irving, DeMarcus Cousins, Kevin Durant and more.  Any of the would fit nicely alongside LeBron except for Irving and we know why.  There you have it Larry Laker’s choice in free-agency.
Kansas City in the NBA
In addition to coaches and a few players Kansas City maintains an NBA presence from the broadcast booth.  The voice of Kevin Harlan is familiar to many throughout the nation, he’s broadcast NFL football and NBA basketball for the TNT Network.  This broadcast veteran began his career straight out of college, at the ripe old age of 22 he was the voice of the Kansas City Kings on radio and television.
Later Harlan would move to the NFL Chiefs and NBA Wolves before beginning a national broadcast footprint.  Broadcasting basketball for the Kansas City Kings was not the first job for Kevin Calabro but he too made a stop in Kansas City.  Calabro the one-time voice of the Sonics can also be heard on ESPN and a few other sports venues.  Neil Funk began broadcasting Bulls basketball in 1991, much earlier in time he spent a portion of his career as the voice of the Kansas City Kings.
I wonder why
It seems we have become accustomed to a new NBA arena opening every 3 years or so, maybe it just seems that way.  Fiserv Arena in Milwaukee has already hosted its first NBA game be it exhibition.  The Bucks will begin regular season play by the time this is read.  Golden 1 Center home of the Kings opened its doors in the fall of 2016.  In 2017 Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit opened and the Pistons are one of the tenants.  Where am I going with this story, watching a Warriors game from Oracle the announcers said, “This will be the last season in Oakland after 47 years.”
The announcer was referring to Chase Center being completed on the San Francisco side of the bay.  I’ve never read anything as to the reason for Oracle being replaced, this I do know Oracle has come nearest to be a permanent home.  You might remember I wrote of the odyssey of the Warriors after they arrived in San Francisco, without rechecking I believe there have been 3 arenas less Oracle which represented home court.  Why San Francisco, will the most rabid fans follow them across the bay to Chase Center?  Better yet will many of the faithful be able to afford tickets in the brand-new palace across the bay?
