Basketball from a fans perspective

Sorry, maybe next time
No official announcement has been issued yet.  It appears the Missouri Valley has made its decision regarding the replacement for Wichita State; it appears the University of Missouri-Kansas City was excluded.  Two schools appear to be in the lead, University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee and University of Nebraska-Omaha are reported to be in the lead.  It’s likely one or maybe both will be added to the Valley.

A familiar name
As mentioned Larry Bird stepped down as president of the Pacers, a name familiar to metro Kansas City replaces Bird.  GM Kevin Pritchard will take over; it’s unclear if this is a permanent move.  As for Pritchard he played guard at Kansas under Larry Brown had a brief NBA career, he was coach and general manager of the Kansas City Knights of the ABA.  Pritchard led the Knights to the ABA championship in 2001.  Later he went to work for the Blazers and 2011 joined the Pacers in their front office.

Time to talk 2018
We now look ahead to Class of 2018 prospects and Zion Williamson.  The 6-7 230 pound forward is from Spartanburg (SC) and is rated number two on Rivals and ESPN Recruiting Nation list. Williamson attends Spartanburg Day High School a college prep school in Spartanburg.  On the recruiting side a total of 29 schools are recruiting Williamson.  The list reads like a who’s who of elite college basketball programs.

Duke, Arizona, North Carolina, Kansas and Kentucky are just a few of the programs. Williamson had Georgetown on his list prior to the arrival of Patrick Ewing.  Ewing’s already has one player in the fold if Williamson is added to the list he’s already accomplished the first key to college basketball---recruiting.  Here I go again, Williamson’s power game reminds me of a young LeBron James, in addition he’s nearly the same size of the high school version of LeBron.

Construction, construction
It was some point in 2012 when I made the statement.  I saw the $1 billion dollar construction tab for Barclays Center in Brooklyn and concluded no more.  “There will be no more tax payer money spent on stadiums and arenas in this country.”  As this is written construction is progressing on arenas in three portions of the nation San Francisco, Milwaukee and Detroit. The Warriors arena will be privately financed as for the others I’m unsure which parties are responsible for construction.
The issue is raised once again this time in Seattle; there are parties in the city that continue the desire for the Sonics and the NBA to return to the Pacific Northwest.  I located a report listing the 5 oldest arenas in the NBA and only two will continue to be used in the future, Target Center (1990) in Minnesota and MSG (1968) in NYC.  In Minnesota renovation has already begun and the Lynx will play elsewhere while contractors are working.  As for MSG its been mentioned on a couple of occasions renovations have occurred in this arena as well, it’s likely MSG will be home for the next several years.

Breaking News
As I was working on today's Words eye view last evening ESPN broke the news.  Larry Bird is submitting his resignation as Pacers president.  Until details are further revealed we might never know the complete story, in any event its somewhat surprising news.

“You Talk Too Much”
You talk too much
You worry me to death
You talk too much
You even worry my pet
You just talk
Talk too much

The opening lyrics of a 1960 R&B hit by the late Joe Jones titled “You Talk Too Much.”  I’m sure you can locate it on YouTube just in case you might not be familiar with the recording.  Nike, Adidas and Under Armour might be playing the tune for LaVar Ball father of UCLA’s Lonzo Ball. Darren Rovell ESPN’s finance editor indicates the three top shoe companies have passed on a deal for Lonzo Ball.

The elder Ball wants his Big Baller Brand be licensed by the company that signs Lonzo and his sons.  What’s most interesting draft choices often sign shoe deals prior to their player contract, this might be the first case of a lottery pick with no shoe deal.  If any of the three major shoe companies sign Lonzo Ball it won’t be for $1 billion dollars.  There's always Reebok, Puma or some other shoe company, on the other hand it’s possible Chinese interests might do the deal that too is possible?

The first five
I glanced at the headline, Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball battling in the headlines who is the superior player. I’m unsure if any of this debate includes draft position since I didn’t read the account so I decided to check several mock draft sites.  All five indicate Markelle Fultz will be the number one pick June 22, this is not a slam dunk Ball or somebody else could be the choice.  As for the better player I certainly have no desire to take sides lets just say its likely both will be impact NBA players.

Important dates to place on your calendar.
NBA Draft Combine (Chicago)
May 9-14
NBA Draft Lottery
May 16
NBA Draft Early Entry Withdrawal Deadline
June 12
NBA Draft
June 22
NBA Summer League
July 1-17

Curious
I read an article on NBA arenas, the author pointed to a number of arenas that should be closed. Among the buildings discussed was the home of the Bulls the United Center.  My first thought “the building can’t be that old can it?”  Well kinda, my research uncovered the building opened in 1994 so it’s 23 years old. Certainly not old there are arenas especially at the college level still in use. Does it require remodeling, possibly? Wikipedia indicates in 2009-10 the 300 level was renovated; in 2014 the exterior was re-done.  I’ve never been inside United Center so I have no idea why the writer believes it requires demolition.

Future Jayhawk?
If you've followed Kansas basketball over the years the name Lester Earl might be familiar. Earl was a 6-8 forward who began play at LSU but finished his college career at Kansas.  An Earl son has taken up the game of his father, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl is a 6-8 220 pound forward and is a highly recruited prospect in the Class of 2019.  He attends Bishop Miege in metro Kansas City in his sophomore year.  Naturally Kansas is in the mix for his services but so too is Mizzou and several other schools. How good is the youngster, he made the All-State First team for the State of Kansas.

Proof positive
Maybe you will believe now since Yale commissioned a study.  I don’t remember the date exactly; I wrote a piece on Rick Barry and his highly accurate free-throw shooting.  Over the course of his career Barry shot nearly 90% from the line.  In my account I indicated Barry attempted to convince a number of poor shooters to utilize his underhand or “granny style” shot. Most interesting Barry’s career overlapped that of Wilt Chamberlain a notorious poor shooter (51.1% career) at the line. Chamberlain attempted to change to the granny style although he didn’t maintain the practice.

The style was suggested at one point to Shaquille O’Neal (52.7%) his response; “I make my free throws when they count. “  Shaq retired in 2011 but we still hear the term “Hack a Shaq”, NBA teams utilizing the rules foul poor free-throw shooters up to the last two minutes without any outcome if not over the foul limit.  It’s usually employed by the team behind hoping the shooter misses one or both free-throws.  As for my account I offered no proof except the outstanding career shooting of Barry.  Along comes a study from of all places prestigious Yale University, the research indicates the most effective free-throw shot is granny style.

“Gone fishing!”
I’m going to do it since it appears TNT won’t, on the other hand I could have missed it.  I’m referring to the “Gone Fishing” photos used by Kenny “The Jet” Smith on the post-game program?  I can’t duplicate the photo but I can provide a few names:

Russell Westbrook
Steven Adams
Damian Lillard
Evan Turner
Paul George
Myles Turner
Giannis Antetokounmpo
Mike Conley

Basketball reigns supreme
The State of Texas is well known for football, high school, college and the NFL.  That’s changing as more and more basketball talent is groomed in the Lone Star State.  As for Kentucky and Indiana its basketball, basketball and more basketball.  That’s not to say there is no football, baseball or hockey interest it’s just a fact round ball fever runs from north to south-east to west in both states.  Everyone thinks of the Kentucky Wildcats or Louisville and they might be the preeminent Division I programs however there are others.  Northern Kentucky, Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State, Murray State.

As for Division II there are two schools along with five Division III schools in the state, there are also 12 NAIA programs.  Depending on the school these programs might be at different won-loss levels but they provide proof basketball is king in Kentucky.  As for Indiana Larry Bird toiled at Indiana State while Isiah Thomas played for Bobby Knight at Indiana.  Butler, Evansville, Purdue, Notre Dame and Ball State are just a few of the Division I programs.  There are four Division II programs, 10 Division III and 18 NAIA programs.  Indiana has one advantage over Kentucky they have the NBA Pacers.  This is not intended to be complete just providing you a brief glimpse into Kentucky and Indiana basketball and its importance to residents.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Multiple choice
Choose one or more, no penalty for an incorrect choice.  The winner of the
Jazz-Clippers series is:

a. Quin Snyder
b. Doc Rivers
c. Jazz reserves
d. Steve Ballmer
e. Joe Johnson
f. Chris Paul
g. Austin Rivers

Their hands might be tied
Despite the talent of Russell Westbrook how does the Thunder improve in the off season?  Well they could draft a quality player in the 2017 draft that’s a beginning.  The down-side even the most talented rookie is often not prepared for the rigors of the NBA, there is an adjustment period.  The Thunder could sign a talented free-agent or two--that helps however that too is an issue.

Can small market Oklahoma City attract quality free-agent(s)?  Considering the current Thunder payroll is there $$$ available to make a pitch to a potential free-agent?  I heard David Aldridge this morning tossing out props to Sam Presti; I’m not as sold on the GM as Aldridge is.  Presti could make a trade or series of trades for a quality player but that’s no guarantee either.

There remains hope
The Missouri Valley Conference or The Valley is losing Wichita State.  Expansion is on the horizon to replace this 10 school conference.  It appears the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee is leading according to reports.  University of Missouri-Kansas City loses out this time but wait there’s more. The report indicated the conference is exploring adding at least three schools at some point in the future.

It’s likely this is his niche
I tried to be faithful to Kim Anderson, I believe to a degree he was placed in a no-win situation at Mizzou.  His loyalty to the program was key to accepting the job; Anderson should have been hired in 1999 at the time Norm Stewart was forced out.  Anderson a Mizzou player and assistant coach had deep ties and they were revealed.  Years later (2014) he accepted the job when he could have easily said no.

Despite success at the Division II level Anderson was over-matched at Division I not because he couldn’t coach he couldn’t recruit.  Couldn’t recruit at a level allowing his Mizzou squad to be competitive.  He was asked to leave March 5th and the 24th he accepted the job at Division II Pittsburg State (KS).  His .745 winning percentage at the University of Central Missouri provides proof he can coach.  I have a connection at Pittsburg State so I hope I’m able to obtain some inside information into the future.

A numbers game
182 players applied for early-entry for this years NBA Draft.  We understand the financial reward they all seek, secondly their desire often from childhood to play in the NBA.  This is key 60 players will be chosen in the draft however there is no guarantee any of the early entry players are going to be chosen.  Let’s just say for sake of argument all 182 have hired agents they are unable to return to college.  60 of the number are drafted, my math indicates 122 players would remain. What’s next you ask for those who remain undrafted; well there is Euro League basketball, play in Australia or the NBA D-League.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Another brother
Mizzou fans have been salivating about the Porter brothers Michael Jr. and Jontay.  Younger brother Jontay has not declared yet however the belief is he might be headed to Mizzou too.  At the same time did you realize there is one other brother playing in high school?  Coban is a 6-2 freshman guard and you might be puzzled by his stature, his brothers stand 6-10 and 6-9.  It’s highly likely he will grow his game and his stature over the next few years.  Coban was on the 29-0 Nathan Hale state champion team.

Waiting…..
For years the NBA through former Commissioner David Stern cultivated the basketball climate in China.  The NBA sent its players and others to the nation over the years.  Yao Ming was a talent at the time he arrived in the NBA but had to prove to skeptics he could play the game. Injuries cut short his career however his impact on the game is immeasurable especially in China.  In 2016 two players were drafted although both remain at play in China‘s pro league.

Wang Zhelin drafted by the Grizzlies and Zhou Qi by the Rockets are the two.  What about the future of basketball in China, it could be high school prospect Kevin Zhang.  Unlike the past Zhang is not playing in China he’s playing in the basketball hotbed of Indiana.  The 6-7 prospect is enrolled at basketball power house La Lumiere in LaPorte and continues to develop his game according to his coach.  Zhang has one more year ahead of him before he attempts the college game.

Draft the best athlete
Realizing this is the NBA and not the NFL but a little history.  The old NFL Cowboys under GM Tex Schramm and Coach Tom Landry drafted the best athlete.  Never mind they might have 3 wide receivers or 5 linebackers on the roster.  They would draft the player and work a trade for a player they might need or depth at a particular position.  Where am I going with this account, NBADraft.Net and DraftXpress.com have the Celtics picking Markelle Fultz.  Don’t the Celtics already have 2X All-Star point guard Isaiah Thomas?  The June draft should be interesting for the Celtics.

Names the same
I did a double take, Matt Barnes pitching; doesn’t he play for the Warriors?  It turns out there is a pitcher for the Red Sox with the same name.  I thought for a moment “there are probably other sports celebrities with the same name”, I decided to conduct a little research.  We begin with Roy William’s long-time basketball coach at North Carolina.  Roy Williams was a wide receiver for a number of NFL teams most notably the Cowboys at one time.

We know of Hall of Fame athlete Kareem Abdul Jabbar; fewer remember running back Karim Abdul Jabbar.  Both changed their names however Karim’s name was bestowed on him much later than Cap.  Mark Jackson played for a number of NBA teams during his career, former coach and now an analyst for ESPN/ABC.  Marc Jackson played in the NBA for a number of teams during a 9 year career.  There’s been only one Magic however there have been two Johnson’s with the same name different spelling.  Earvin “Magic” Johnson enough said, the other Ervin Johnson played at New Orleans University and spent 13 years in the NBA.

By the time Larry Johnson arrived to play for the Knicks his “Grandmamma” days were over, he played at UNLV and was an NCAA Champion in 1990.  Running back Larry Johnson had a rather pedestrian career for the NFL most of it spent with the Chiefs.  We have the late Hall of Fame Baltimore Bullet Gus Johnson and Gus Johnson play by play announcer for the NFL and college basketball.  NFL Larry Brown has long been retired, basketball Coach Larry Brown is 77-years old and we are still not sure he’s fully retired.  This certainly shouldn't be considered complete just a few of the names I managed to uncover in my research.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Bits n Pieces
Former Bulls guard Derrick Rose visited the United Center to watch the Bulls-Celtics playoff game. ESPN claims “He received a rousing ovation from the crowd.”  He might have been made welcome at the game but not in the hearts and minds of a number of Bulls fans.  It’s my belief fans exhibit the fan-atic side quite often however I wonder in this instance.  Most of the unkind emails came from folks who identified themselves as Bulls fans.

I dare you; no I double dare you to try it.  Place a photo of Virginia Tech’s Buzz Williams side by side with a photo of Curly Howard of The Three Stooges.  Howard may have been one of the first to wear a buzz haircut which is reflected in Williams.  Now calm down before you begin throwing rocks at me I’m not trying to poke fun at the coach, I happen to believe he’s very good.

We have no idea the pain Isaiah Thomas is suffering at this stage.  The loss of his sister certainly must weigh heavily on his heart.  Despite his pain the 5-9 point guard led the Celtics to 105-95 victory over the Bulls tying the series 2-2.  Thomas scored 33 points and dished out 7 assists.

One of the few Class of 2017 prospect yet to decide is Trevon Duval.  He’s a 5-star point guard who attends IMG Academy in Florida.  The 6-2 Duval is from Hockessin a Wilmington Delaware suburb. Duval is being chased by 28 schools for his services, among them Arizona, Duke, Kansas, Louisville, UCLA and Mizzou.  He will make a decision within the month as his school of choice.

Mizzou has another prospect on the radar; this time no freshman they hope can play at the D-1 level he’s a proven commodity.  Kassius Robertson is a 6-3 guard who played at Canisius last season and finished with a 16.3 ppg average.  Robertson has a planned visit to the Columbia campus.  If Mizzou should sign every player they are prospecting a player from last season must be removed, Mizzou would be short one scholarship.

Tell us what you really think
Former NFL tight end Shannon Sharpe and current Fox Sports broadcaster nailed it.  Discussing the Clippers these are part of the words of Sharpe.  “Not only is he the head coach, not only is he cooking the food, he’s shopping for the groceries.  So this restaurant is not doing well is all his fault, because he’s everything.  He coaches the team, he picks the players.”  Sharpe goes on to mention several players the coach brought on board that offered little during their tenure with the Clippers.

Look fans this is the last year if they don’t do something.  Chris Paul-free agent, Blake Griffin-free agent, J.J. Redick-free agent at the conclusion of the 2017 season whenever that occurs.  Owner Ballmer must do some serious soul-searching should the Clippers come up short once again.  This Clipper team under Doc Rivers has never made it past the second round; he’s not on the court however a portion of the shortcoming must is placed at the feet of the coach.  Speaking of fee I certainly wouldn’t won’t to be in Ballmer’s shoes.

Is there a problem?
The NFL Chargers are headed to Los Angeles where they first began play.  After beginning play in 1960 they only played there one year before moving to San Diego.  They are headed north again to Los Angeles and it’s a stadium issue, we covered the NBA issue in the past although there might have been details omitted.  The San Diego Rockets were an NBA expansion team which began play in 1967 where they remained until 1971 locating to Houston (TX).

The Buffalo (NY) Braves were also an NBA expansion team; they played in New York from their founding in 1970 until 1978.  The team was sold to interests who moved them west to San Diego where they were re-named the Clippers.  The team remained in the city until 1984 when they headed north to Los Angeles where they remain to this day.  There is likely no one reason perhaps a series of reasons the baseball Padres remain the only professional sport in the city today. According to Google maps point to point the cities are 120 miles apart allowing each a separate identity.  This is far too short to detail the why it can only provide a brief history.

Basketball from a fans perspective

I had to correct them
The “experts” on ESPN were highly critical of the Lakers going on a 5-game winning streak near the end of the season.  On my Saturday visit to the barber shop I heard from both barbers and several patrons.  I argued loudly, “I don’t believe in losing in order to improve your draft position."  One of the patrons remarked; “Remember former Jets Coach Herm Edwards rant about how a professional team should play?  Never mind Edwards was discussing the NFL Jets winning still applies.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5-iJUuPWis

Folks we’ve heard nothing but critical remarks regarding former GM Sam Henke and the Sixers, “They are stockpiling draft choices“ was the word expressed by many in the media.  The Lakers are not good but we certainly can make no claim about them imitating the Sixers.  I informed the barbers and all patrons within earshot; “If they (the Lakers) lose the lottery pick so be it, I rather them win rather than lose on purpose.” What do you think?

Bits n Pieces
Grant Hill is unusual in a number of aspects; he’s the son of former Cowboy running back Calvin Hill.  Hill had a 19-year career and at the time he retired he became a member of the media. This year we’ve seen Hill bounce back and forth between covering the college game and the NBA.  He’s also a part-owner of the Atlanta Hawks.  We shouldn’t be surprised at how smoothly Hill’s made a second career for himself.

I must set the stage for the statement; the television camera took a shot the Lakers coaching staff which contained 1 head coach and 6 assistants.  Stu Lantz serves as analyst for the teams broadcast but once played in the NBA.  Bill MacDonald play by play broadcaster said to his partner; “How many coaches did you have when you arrived in the NBA?”  The response from Lantz was classic, “one’.  Keep in mind Lantz was drafted by the San Diego Rockets in 1968, at that time there was no such thing as an assistant coach in the NBA.

I always check the start/stop date regarding letters of intent.  I believe athletes can verbally commit to a college at any point in time during the year but must wait until the signing period to place their signature on a letter of commitment.  As for spring 2017 the start date for D-I & II prospects is April 12 and runs to May 17 for D-I programs, D-II schools have until August 1 to sign prospects.

Rebuilding a team
The Lakers have suffered on the court for the last several years that haven‘t been alone.  The Sixers, Nets and others have not played top-notch basketball.  Key to the lack of success on the court is the failure to begin rebuilding.  At what point does a team begin rebuilding might be the question?  My belief an NBA should always be in rebuilding mode.  We can look at the Spurs as an example of durability however it might not be totally true.  It’s having Greg Popovich and the Spurs front office working hand and hand with one another has been a major portion of why the franchise has never fallen out of the playoffs.  Pop is similar to Phil Jackson, I read few player complaints regarding Jackson’s coaching methods the same for coach Pop.

Second steady David Robinson and Tim Duncan became the foundation; pieces (players) were added to the foundation.  The Spurs added a Manu Ginobili here and a Tony Parker there, some might state the Spurs were lucky to draft players who might appear obscure.  The big difference the players mentioned and other became stars in the NBA.  You might have noticed few free-agents have been added to this mix, yes Pau Gasol and LeMarcus Aldridge have come on board but they are the exception rather than the general rule.  I hope it doesn’t appear this rebuilding thing is easy it’s difficult, I’m sure the Spurs must have suffered failure on some level.  The success they experienced over the years far outweigh any miscues.

Basketball from a fans perspective

It’s amazing
Seeing the Grizzlies Vince Carter running up and down the court at 40 years of age is really amazing.  How hold is 40 you ask, teammate Deyonta Davis was two years old in 1998.  The Lakers Brandon Ingram and Thon Maker of the Bucks were one year old and several other NBA competitors.  In 1998 the Warriors made Carter the 5th pick in the first round and like the Energizer Bunny still going and going and going.

Injuries
There was a desire to not attempt coverage on the entire playoffs.  My intent was to provide more in depth once the championship round had begun.  Then the injuries occur, the injuries.  It’s early so we have no idea how the loss of Rondo and Griffin will affect their respective teams.  Bulls point guard Rajon Rondo suffered a right thumb fracture in Game Two against the Celtics.  He claims he will “be out two weeks”, I’m not medically trained but that seems rather soon to return from the injury.

Meantime in Salt Lake City Clipper forward Blake Griffin suffered an injury to the plantar plate of his right big toe.  The initial prognosis for Griffin is missing the balance of the playoffs.  That old sayin’: “Injuries are part of the game” could never be more correct.  Before the playoffs began I could have stated neither the Bulls nor Clippers are expected to win the 2017 championship.  I made the statement with both teams in relatively good health with both teams suffering key injuries------well.

My momma
I remember from my childhood what my mother told me as if it was yesterday.  She said; “Don’t tell people what you intend to do go ahead and do it. “  Sounds real close to the motto Nike once used, where am I going with this rant you ask?  LaVar Ball did it again; he took issue with former coach and Nike executive George Raveling’s quote regarding the elder Ball.  Raveling said he (Ball) “Is setting basketball back 100 years.”

As President Truman once said; “If you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen.”  Mr. Ball prepare to be criticized for some of the outlandish statements you make, he‘s now stating his Big Baller Brand will compete with Nike.  “We’ll have Nike shaking in their boots” were the words from Ball.  With the prospect of millions for son Lonzo and the other brothers he should have the financial resources to launch his brand.  I wish I could give him the advice my mom gave me, “Don’t tell people what you intend to do go ahead and do it.

In rarified air
5-star prospect Kevin Knox had several coaches fly into Tampa (FL) to meet with him and his parents.  This past Tuesday it was Florida State’s Leonard Hamilton followed later by John Calipari of Kentucky.  On Wednesday it was Carolina’s Roy Williams then Cuonzo Martin of Mizzou concluding with Coach K. of Duke.  In the space of two days Florida State, Kentucky, North Carolina, Mizzou and Duke all came vying for the services of the 6-9 yet to commit prospect. Which one of these programs has never been in this exclusive company previously?

Speaking of coaches
Surfing the net I came across a 12Up, a story really stood out.  Titled; “Four Coaches who could be fired at the end of the season.”  It wasn’t the article as much as the email response I read.  The overwhelming majority of emails dealt with the Bulls, Fred Hoiberg and the Bulls front office.  The other three coaches mentioned barely registered with fans, what does that say to us?  The Bulls have a significant number of passionate loyal fans who want better than what they have witnessed. The issues facing the Bulls certainly cannot be fully covered in such a short space but I love the zeal of their fans.  I haven’t read any comments since the Bulls have taken the lead over the higher favored Celtics.

Basketball from a fans perspective

“Got a few dollars to spare?“
Actually it’s more like a reported $500 million dollars to be exact.  Mikhail Prokhorov majority owner of the Nets is conducting a sale. His 49% of the team is being placed on the market; we guess a portion of this involves Barclays Center too.  This is the second time Prokhorov’s indicated his desire to sell and there are two keys.

One being the price for 49% of the time and  two who really desires to own an NBA team?
There are a couple of names that come to mind, Chris Hansen however his interest lie in returning the NBA to Seattle.  The second name is media mogul Oprah Winfrey; could Oprah decide to purchase the Nets? This shouldn’t be a total surprise you might remember she and partners were in the bidding process at the time the Clippers were on the market.

“Should the Lakers trade for Carmelo Anthony?”
The headline from the fan website jumped off the page at me.  Jamas, non, het, nein, hapana I searched the web and that’s NO in a number of different languages.  Why not Carmelo you ask?  Age, he’s 32 technically not old but a great deal of mileage on those knees.  In addition to 15 years of NBA play Anthony’s played in four Olympics, one World Championship and one Americas Championship.  Black-hole, you know in outer space everything going into a black-hole disappears never to be seen again.

As talented as Carmelo is he slows down and in some instances inhibits all together the Knicks offense.  Talent, due to Carmelo’s huge contract the Lakers would be forced to give up a great deal of their young talent to have Carmelo for two maybe three productive years.  Trading a D’Angelo Russell or a Julius Randle could work, trading two or three of these youngsters for Carmelo no way.  Despite the negatives regarding Carmelo’s game if this offer had been on the table 5 or 6 years ago I might say yes do the deal-----in 2017 it’s a completely different matter.

A societal issue
Time to time I believe there are social issues which impact basketball, this is one of those.  I have no desire to confiscate anyone’s gun; I have a problem with anyone who believes they have a NEED to carry a firearm into a sporting event or a hospital for that matter.  Next door to us in Kansas it’s okay to carry weapons practically everyplace, in Missouri its almost the same with certain exceptions.  The Regents for the State of Kansas decided to ban concealed weapons in the states largest arenas despite the view of the legislature.

Kansas, Kansas State and Wichita State will ban concealed weapons next season during games. Before a number of gun owners begin boycotting Words eye view note need I remind you of my statement at the top of this piece, I have no desire to take anyone’s gun?  I believe with the security in place at these arenas why is there a need for anyone to require protection watching Kansas, Kansas State or Wichita State play?  My question for the Kansas Legislature is law enforcement not required at basketball games in your state?

New coaches in new places
At one time serving as head coach of a college team your job was somewhat secure.  Don‘t misunderstand since the beginning of the game coaches have been terminated, in the last several years it’s become more prevalent.  Although I don‘t believe it occurred this past season I can recall at least two coaches replaced in the middle of the season.

This count is unofficial in October or whenever practice begins 11 new coaches will be in place. The majority (Cuonzo Martin and John Groce) have prior head coaching experience.  Others such as Wyking Jones at Cal have served in the assistant capacity but this will be the first as a head coach.  It appears pressure by alumni and administration plus students sometime make for an unpredictable mix.

Basketball from a fans perspective

“Don’t let your mouth write a check your body can't cash"
I’m taking back a promise, the promise I made to avoid commentary on LaVar Ball.  “The worst thing to happen to basketball in the last hundred years” so stated George Raveling Nike Executive regarding the elder Ball.  Phil Knight founder of the Nike brand said earlier “If he can get it, get it”. “It’s a little steep” (referring to the $1 billion dollar price tag the elder Ball has mentioned).  Knight further stated he believes Lonzo Ball is a talent and Nike has interest.  Let’s come back to earth a moment, let’s just say XYZ company decides to pay the $1 billion dollar figure.

The agreement cannot be consummated this summer----why?  The older brother will have been drafted by an NBA team and might have already signed a player contract.  In the meantime LiAngelo will be close to entering his freshman year at UCLA and LeMelo will be preparing for his junior year at Chino Hills High School.  If the two younger brothers sign a contract “poof” no more amateur status for either one, I doubt LaVar Ball is that brain-dead.

Lonzo’s situation is totally different he’ll sign a shoe contract however it won’t be for the price his dad’s been touting.  Could there be some sort of payment negotiated under the table to avoid impacting the younger brothers---that’s possible.  Whatever the arrangement if Nike is unwilling would Adidas, Reebok, Under Armour or some other shoe company be willing to pay $1 billion dollars?  That’s the hotly debated question at this point, let’s say I have my doubts after hearing from Nike.  As for the title of this account it’s a lyric from The Dude a 1981 album recorded by Quincy Jones and I can think of few people other than LaVar Ball it fits.

My basketball team
I don’t believe I provided an end of the season report our 2nd grade co-ed basketball team finished the season with a winning record.  I discovered several lessons, at 8 years or so most of my girls were actually better than the boys.  In addition I determined I had the ability to maintain the score in my head until a parent began tracking it for us.  All in all it was a great and surprising season for me.  Would I do it again---you bet I would, I loved teaching youngsters how to play the game.  Of our 8 member team only 2 played previously that’s the most thrilling part for me.  I cannot wait for next season to start again.

Off to Lativa
Elvis Kristaps Porzingis has left the building!  Well not quite although he is headed home soon. You remember the story reported earlier Porzingis failed to have an exit interview with Phil Jackson after the season concluded.  Porzingis claims nothing to see here----move on, “I love New York and says he wants to remain with the Knicks.”  I’m not sure who it might be however somebody is breathing easier after hearing that comment.  With that Porzingis is about to head home to Latvia. I‘ve said it previously and it bears repeating I‘d be happy for the Lakers to work out a deal for him.
On the map
Columbia Missouri appears to be a destination as much as Lexington (KY), Lawrence (KS), Durham or Chapel Hill (NC).  Kevin Knox a 6-8 small forward and 5-star prospect on several sites was headed anywhere except Mizzou.  Mizzou has at least become a stop; Knox is on the way for a visit next week.  As with any prospect this is no commitment however the times are exciting. After the MPJR signing plus his personal recruiting efforts prospects are no longer flying over Columbia they are landing.  Later you will read a pro basketball offer for Knox which I found interesting.

Overlooked
Robert Covington may never be an easily recognized NBA name.  He’s proven a point to date, if you have a dream don’t give up on it.  Covington enrolled at Tennessee State a small historically black college in 2009.  He was passed over in the 2013 NBA Draft despite four years of college ball behind him.  Covington would sign a contract with the Rockets to play for their summer league team, after being waived his next stop would be the D-League.

In November 2014 he signed a free-agent contract with the Sixers and the rest is history, the 6-9 Covington is now the starting small forward for the Sixers.  Not being drafted, waived by the Rockets playing in the D-League.  Covington could have easily given up but sometimes beyond the talent we fail to see the heart of a champion.  Whatever Covington does going forward we know this he is a winner.

Top 10
ESPN released its final Recruiting Class Rankings for 2017, the Top 10 schools are:

  1. Kentucky
  2. UCLA
  3. Arizona
  4. Duke
  5. Alabama
  6. Miami
  7. Louisville
  8. Texas
  9. Florida
10. Mizzou

Someone might say I’m reading too much into this news, no I don’t think so.  I believe it might be an indication for the future of Mizzou basketball, at least I hope.  (fingers crossed)

Can you say déjà vu?
The late Bill Davidson loved Isiah Thomas; the Piston point guard led the way for two NBA Championships.  It was reported the owner promised an interest in the franchise once Thomas retired.  After the player retired a strange thing occurred, as far as we know the former player was never offered a portion of Piston ownership.  In 2009 owner Davidson died and since then the Pistons have been sold to Tom Gores, the new owner has no obligation to Thomas.  I'm sure Gores is aware of the Thomas connection to the Piston however does he have the responsibility to honor the pledge made by Davidson?

We don't have the answer however there's been no public word of it.  A similar situation has developed between the Wolves and Kevin Garnett back in 1995 the Wolves drafted Kevin Garnett directly from high school, The Big Ticket would toil several years with the franchise.  Later he move to first Celtics and later the Nets.  In 2015 Garnett near the end of his illustrious NBA career would return to Wolves in a player/coach role. He was reported to become a minority owner of the Wolves, like Thomas before him strange goings on. I’m not going to detail the issues but simply state its déjà vu once again in the NBA.

Headed to Arizona
Shareef O’Neal is one of the six children of Shaquille O’Neal; in addition he’s a top basketball prospect in the Class of 2018.  On Shareef’s list of schools are USC, UCLA, Kansas, Baylor and a host of other schools including LSU his dad’s school.  The program at LSU is in turmoil so it’s highly unlikely young O'Neal would be head to LSU despite the family connection.  At this stage it’s a verbal commitment so he certainly has time to deliberate on this over the next year or so. Shaq claims he left the decision to his son, Shareef is a great deal smaller than dad checking in at 6-9 and 205 pounds.  He‘s still a growing youngster despite this fact he will likely never be the force in the paint his dad was.

Bits n Pieces
I have no method of going back and checking just my thoughts.  I believe for the first time in recent memory I might have viewed more college and high school basketball than the NBA. Have I changed my viewing habits, maybe to a degree however I continue to believe the best basketball is still played in the NBA?

The college basketball season has ended; we close in on the end of the semester for high school. Prep players will be returning to their former AAU teams while others will be searching for a new team to join.  Metro Kansas City has 10 AAU basketball teams by my count.  That might be small by comparison to Metro Los Angeles, Dallas-Fort Worth or some other large metro area in the nation.  Kansas City AAU teams are often comprised of out state Kansas, out state Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma and even Nebraska athletes.  I wonder if other cities teams are comprised of this large a mix of talent.

The next stop might be Hawaii, I’m just kidding with this story.  I’ve covered the movements of NBA teams especially the early years.  The Kings have been on a steady westward move, the franchise was originally founded as the Royals in Rochester (NY) in 1948 where they played until 1957. In 1957 they moved west to Cincinnati (OH) which was home until 1972. 1972 would witness the team moving west again to Kansas City (MO) re-branded as the Kings. Kansas City would be home-base until 1985 when they moved once again this time to Sacramento (CA) where they remain to this day.  The franchise was almost sold to Seattle interest which planned on moving them north.

At the close of the second year I remain unsure.  In 2015 we believed the Wolves would choose Karl-Anthony with the first pick.  Everyone (including Larry Laker) believed the Lakers with the second pick would then choose Jahlil Okafor.  They needed a quality big man and Okafor “appeared” to fit that bill.  Instead of Okafor the Laker pick became D’Angelo Russell.  The Lakers and Sixer rookies experienced up and down years in addition both suffered maturity issues.  Was it the Lakers or Sixers, who made the best choice, you make the call.

The Thunder  once
It’s entirely possible the Thunder could win the 2017 NBA Championship.  If they had this team of former Thunder players they certainly might stand more of a chance than the current edition.

Center-Kendrick Perkins
PF-Serge Ibaka
SF-Kevin Durant
PG-Kevin Westbrook
SG-James Harden

Of course we realize Westbrook remains with the team as for the others.  Harden and Durant left in free-agency; Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins were traded.  I don't remember who the Thunder received in exchange for these two however I believe Victor Oladipo arrived in the Ibaka trade.  I've read praises regarding the Thunder front-office but I question if they deserve some of the praise I've heard.  We must take into consideration the Thunder has reached a point they don't appear capable of rising any higher in the standings.   Maybe change should come in the front office first and then on the court.

Recruiting
Jontay Porter is visiting Mizzou next week; the younger Porter is reported to be almost as talented as his brother.  Jontay is almost the same size (6-9 225 pounds) as brother Michael Porter Jr. Coach Cuonzo Martin hopes to lure the other Porter to Columbia too but there is another story.

It’s been reported Jontay will reclassify and play alongside his brother this upcoming season.
In other Mizzou recruiting news the school is in the hunt for Mark Smith a 6-5 225 pound shooting guard.  Smith is a Class of 2017 prospect and yet to announce his school of choice. He's from Edwardsville which is less than 30 miles from East St. Louis coach Martin’s hometown.  It will be interesting over the next month or so to see how all this plays out.

“The Little Engine that could”
Remember the childhood story of the little train that had a daunting task in front of him, he was required to pull a huge load up a mountain.  The children’s story could actually be the Rockets point guard Patrick Beverly.  This Chicago native played his college ball at Arkansas but left after his sophomore year for the NBA.  Drafted late in the 2nd round of 2009 by my Lakers Beverly was immediately traded to the Heat.

Over the next several years he would play for a number of Euro teams before catching on with the Rockets.  Even his 2013 time with the Rockets became tenuous as he was sent to the D-League at a point.  Beverly is firmly established as the Rockets point guard, he’s never going to be a guy who will wow you with his game.  One thing for sure every time I witness his play I’ll reflect on his journey to the NBA.  I can almost here him saying; “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.”

Come on man you can’t be serious
Please, please help me I need to quite switching to sports talk radio when I’m in my vehicle. Classic Rock, Classic R&B, Smooth Jazz or even listen to my tunes or plain silence.  I’m pleading with myself because I’m the only one who controls the station while driving, my wife could care less what I listen too.

Due to our close proximity to nearby Lawrence and the Jayhawks we receive questionable commentary.  The radio host questioned why KU’s Title Nine coordinator called for an investigation of the LeGerald Vick incident with a female basketball player because the Lawrence Police did not arrest Vick or investigate the incident.  No further commentary is required on my part for this apparently short-sided radio host.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Headed for the NBA
We were surprised Kansas freshman Josh Jackson declared for the 2017 draft.  I’m joking with you, it was a foregone conclusion he would be one and done at Kansas.  All the projections I’ve seen place Jackson no lower than at the very least the fourth pick in the first round.  Some projections indicate Jackson might even be chosen number two.

A heavy heart
I stated it would be difficult to provide updates on all the playoff games.  The only instance would be an unusual game situation; we had that on Sunday between the Celtics and Bulls.  To lose a love one is devastating; athletes are no different from us in this regard.  Chyna Thomas 22-year old sister of Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas died in an automobile accident Saturday morning.  Would Isaiah, could Isaiah play in the Celtics first playoff game on Sunday afternoon

Could Thomas play with such a heavy heart was the question.  The photo’s of Avery Bradley consoling him on the bench at shoot-around or the other photo shooting with tears clearly obvious. As for the game the Celtics came up short 106-102 however the game was close due to the effort of Thomas.  Thomas shot .556 from the floor scoring 33 points and dishing out 6 assists and grabbing 5 rebounds, R.I.P. Chyna Thomas.

Check the east coast
Folks looking at the Lakers and discussion centered on the teams dysfunction at the top.  The “war” between the Buss family has been much in the news although it now appears over. Ready for the next flashpoint, how about 3,000 miles east?  The Knicks expected to be improved in 2016 2017 have played in a similar manner to the old Knicks.  NBA teams conduct exit interviews with each roster member It was reported Kristaps Porzingis skipped his.

The indication he’s “upset” with the turmoil that existed on the Knicks this past season.  Phil Jackson making news once again by simply stating Carmelo Anthony might be “better off some place else. “  All this drama and not a peep out of Coach Jeff Hornacek as this is written. Those are the principles however I‘m not prepared to offer any solutions just the report.  Oh yes I do have one, I‘m sure the Lakers could find space somewhere on their roster should the Latvian youngster decides he wants to play for another team.  .

The Muni
A discussion of college and pro basketball in Kansas City begins at a building surprising to many. You might have thought this was a discussion on Sprint Center (2007) or Kemper Arena (1974). Sprint’s served as host for numerous NCAA Tournament games since its opening; Sprint has also witnessed NBA and NHL exhibitions and a number of college basketball games.  As for Kemper it’s also been host for NCAA games, the former NHL Scouts and NBA Kings and for a brief period the NAIA Tournament.  Kemper has now been sold to private interests to be developed as a youth and fitness facility.

This discussion ends discussing venerable Municipal Auditorium which first opened its doors in 1936.  Muni as its nicknamed has served host to 10 NCAA and 73 NAIA Championship games and continues the count.  Due to occupancy issues the Muni will no longer serve as the site for NCAA venues, basketball has been moved to the larger Sprint Center.  Muni was the original “home” of the Kansas City Kings prior to Kemper Arena being built.  The 10,000 seat arena continues to serve the NAIA as championship central and its now home to the University of Kansas City Kangaroos.

I’m not THAT relaxed!
As a Mizzou fan I’m pleased Michael Porter Jr. is on the roster.  It’s only going to be one year I’m not foolish enough to believe he’s playing past his freshman year.  This is written ahead so I have no idea the number of future prospects Coach Cuonzo has recruited.  At the same time the realist in me looks at last years LSU team.  Ben Simmons arrived on campus with all the tools and talent, a funny thing occurred on the way to the NCAA Tournament---there was no appearance by LSU.

We discover after the fact a number of Simmons teammates resented all the attention the youngster was receiving.  LSU barely competed (19-14) even with the talented Simmons in the lineup.  The end result Coach Jones was fired a year after the talented Simmons departed for the NBA.  At the beginning I believe (I could be wrong) Martin is a better coach than Jones.  Mizzou might show slight improvement and don’t expect to see a repeat of the LSU fiasco.  Sorry LSU fans just calling it as I see it.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Kevin Who?
A site I peruse regularly contained an account of the Top 10 coaching hires at the conclusion of the season. Patrick Ewing at Georgetown, Cuonzo Martin at Mizzou was just a couple of names mentioned.  The name unknown to most of us was their pick Kevin Keats at North Carolina State at the top spot, who is Keats? This former Rick Pitino assistant turned around a losing program at UNC-Wilmington.  He’s 44-years old which place him in the category of being a young head coach at a major university.  He’s got his work cut out for him turning around a losing program however given time the North Carolina State faithful will be rewarded with this hire.

Game results
Too many playoff games and time does not permit adequate coverage on them all.  In addition by the time you read Words eye view its “old” news.  Unless there is something noteworthy I’ll allow your local news, ESPN, Fox Sport and CBS Sports to update you.

Trivia
I love trivia especially if it’s regarding subject matter I’m familiar with.  How about this question. The last NBA game was played by the Seattle Sonics in 2008; despite the intervening years there are two former players who remain active in the NBA.  It you said Kevin Durant was one of the two you got 10 points; Durant played his rookie year in the Emerald City.

The team moved his sophomore year and underwent a name change becoming the Thunder.  If you can name the other player before skipping to the bottom of the story you get 20 points. Okay the countdown begins, who is the other Sonic still active in the NBA?  Cue the theme music (use your imagination).  His name is Nick Collison, drafted by the Sonic in 2003 the Sonics/Thunder franchise is the only NBA team he’s ever played for in his 14-year career.

“Double idiot”
I admit I was aware of the reported improprieties regarding North Carolina basketball.  Like most of you I was waiting for the NCAA to make a recommendation for punishment.  In between time I was paying more attention to Carolina on the court than off.  The issue was raised again not by anyone associated with the NCAA or Carolina.  Wallace Loh president of Maryland raised the issue even suggesting the punishment might be the “death penalty.”  In 1987 SMU football suffered this penalty for infractions regarding the program.

There are several red flag issues; regardless of what Loh believes should occur the NCAA is the governing body.  The secondary question Maryland is in the Big 10 and North Carolina remains affiliated with the ACC.  What possessed the president of Maryland to comment on a school in another conference?  Maryland left the ACC similar to Mizzou leaving the Big 12. Mizzou might wish to renew its rivalry with Kansas, I could see talk along those lines.  I cannot imagine administrators from either school commenting on a serious penalty.  Carolina’s Roy Williams response, “He’s (Loh) a double idiot.”

Good to go
The Lakers are looking ahead just in case; GM Rob Pelinka has gone on record with the plan. On May 16 the draft lottery will be held, the Lakers could lose their top three pick and the five game winning streak is the chief reason.  I am pleased the Lakers continued to play to win rather than tanking.  Winning might entail losing in the draft and that is the main reason for a back-up plan. Thanks to a trade the Lakers will have a first round pick it’s just later in the first round it’s a late one (28).

There certainly is no guarantee on late first round or 2nd round picks however it’s not doom and gloom.  I was curious regarding second round draft picks who became solid NBA contributors. Below are just a few who provide evidence of second round talent.  Although he’s just getting started Laker Jordan Clarkson has been a solid contributor as a starter or off the bench. Clarkson was the 46th pick in the second round of the 2014 draft.

  • Manu Ginobili
  • Draymon Green
  • Gilbert Arena
  • Marc Gasol
  • Paul Milsap
  • DeAndre Jordan
  • Monta Ellis

Basketball from a fans perspective

“Should I stay or should I go”
Hamidou Diallo might take note of the 1982 hit tune by the rock group The Clash “Should I stay or should I go.”  Should Diallo declare for the 2017 draft or head for Lexington Kentucky?  Last year Thon Maker was able to circumvent the rules by his high school class graduating the previous year.  In addition Maker would be 19-years old by the time of the the 2016 NBA Draft.  Diallo is a 6-5 shooting guard and claims similar status to Maker.  He‘s in the Class of 2017 although he graduated in 2016 from Putnam Science Academy.  Diallo’s signed a LOI to attend Kentucky however he just might dip his “toe in the water” and test the results.
.
I missed this story
Terrance Ferguson was overlooked by me I’m almost shocked.  Ferguson a 6-7 shooting guard from Dallas was originally slated to attend Alabama.  He de-committed and was headed to Arizona until he changed his mind once again.  This McDonald’s All-American decided instead to play professionally rather than become a one and done in college.  Ferguson signed and played for the Adelaide 36ers an Australian team in the National Basketball League.  No questions exist for Ferguson he’s eligible for the 2017 draft and should be an early first round choice.

Depends on your perspective
At the beginning I’ll inform you my wife doesn’t agree with my take, the irrepressible Charles Barkley struck once again.  I find myself at odds with a statement he’s made.  You might have read a previous account regarding the closing of the Palace of Auburn Hills home of the Pistons. Members of the TNT NBA crew were asked their memories of Detroit.  Barkley chimed in “I’ve never been to Detroit.”  In once sense I understand Barkley’s explanation, at the time Barkley first began play in the NBA the Pistons played in the Pontiac Silverdome (closed and since demolished) and later made the move to Auburn Hills.

How about flying into Detroit, the airport is located in Romulus some 30 miles from the downtown portion of the city.  During his playing career Barkley played in those buildings, landed at the airport neither location lies inside the city limits of Detroit.  Okay I believe we all can understand that take but here’s mind.  I have relatives who live in a suburban portion of Dallas-Fort Worth.  I’ve seen Dallas on the drive through the city, can I say in truth I’ve never been to Dallas?  Same for Chicago I’ve driven through the city never stopped I guess technically I could make the same statement however why?

Bits n Pieces
We think of China and basketball immediately we think of Yao Ming and Kobe Bryant.  Kobe is not Chinese but he’s very popular in China.  The game has a much longer history than the aforementioned players.  Research indicates the game was actually introduced to China in 1896 by a government official named Pengiane.  Basketball had just been “invented” a short six years prior (1891) by Dr. Naismith in Springfield (MA).

Everyone must have a starting point for that job they desire.  For years Patrick Ewing wanted a head coaching job, he’s finally been rewarded being hired by Georgetown.  I’m already hearing from critics claiming this was not a good hire.  What’s a good hire versus a poor one, until the person fails you have no idea of their ability to succeed.  The loud yelling has died down but we heard the same comments at the time Jeanie Buss hired Magic Johnson.  How can we presume someone is unable to accomplish a job unless they work it?  This is Larry Laker; “You cannot steal second base if your foot is planted on the first base bag.”

This I believe would be extremely funny to me.  June 22nd the Lakers draft Markelle Fultz, Josh Jackson or Jason Tatum.  This is not a talent issue rather an attitude issue for me.  Of course nothing is set in stone at this point we have no idea if the Lakers even secure the lottery pick. Someone’s father might be quite upset if the Lakers fail to draft his son.

Basketball from a fans perspective

The second season
So it begins 4 NBA playoff games today and 4 on Sunday.  Indiana at Cleveland kick it off today at 2:00 p.m. central time followed by Milwaukee at Toronto.  In the nightcap Memphis will be at San Antonio while Utah at the Clippers close out Saturday night.  On Sunday its Atlanta at Washington 12:00 p.m. central followed by Portland at Golden State.  Sunday evening finds Chicago at Boston and later the top MVP candidates Westbrook and Harden face one another from the Toyota Center in Houston.

I need blinders
Or I should quit reading stuff that confirms my suspension of a subject.  Earlier I congratulated Russell Westbrook for tying Oscar Robertson’s triple-double record however I maintain I have issues with Westbrook‘s game.  In one of the closing game Suns players claim they were aware Westbrook was close to the assist record because he was passing up open shots to distribute the ball.  If you score, assist or rebound in the course of the game nothing wrong with that.  I stated earlier a number of fans referred to Westbrook as a “stat stuffer.”  Sorry Westbrook fans my choice for 2017 MVP plays his basketball in H-Town at the Toyota Center.

Where are the Big Men
They are out there its just seeing the talent and developing it.  Coaches claim it’s more difficult to develop a Big Man’s game than other positions.  There was a young man walking the halls of a high school, as the story goes the PE teacher also served as the school’s basketball coach. He saw this skinny 6-7 freshman walking the halls one day.  The youngster had little interest in playing basketball but all the coach could see was potential.  He transferred the young man into his PE class and began working with him on drills to improve his coordination and agility.  .

By his senior year this young man had grown to 7-1 and improved to the point a D-I school offered a basketball scholarship.  I’ve long believed the lack of Big Men can be laid at the feet of Dirk Nowitzki it’s his fault.  Almost 20 years ago at the time 7-foot Dirk came into the NBA he played power forward not center.  He became proficient at shooting drifted out to the 3-point line.  Players 6-11 and taller came into the NBA as power forwards rather than back to the basket centers.  To borrow a theme from the old television series X-Files “The truth is out There.”  Big Men are out there they just need to be located and developed.

“Say my name”
This is no reference to the Beyonce/Destiny’s Child hit from 1999 I‘m not braggin but in 2015 I did say his name it was Kristaps Porzingis.  Did I know how good a player he might turn out to be? No, I‘m not that good I was aware of his name (couldn’t pronounce it correctly) but was aware prior to the draft unlike a number in the media.  The growth of the international game always produces potential talent in each year’s draft.

At the top of most mock drafts is Frank Ntilikina a 6-5 190 pound point guard, he’s got an unusual journey. Ntilikina born in Belgium his family emigrated from Rwanda but he was raised in France. It’s possible he might be drafted and stashed in Europe if it’s believed he’s not NBA ready. Ntilikina is likely a lottery pick so we shall see what occurs in June.  The second Euro player drafted will be Isaiah Hartenstein of Germany; he’s a 7 foot power forward.  At this point if one or both are drafted don’t be a “Stephen A. Smith” yelling and screaming about who is this guy?
