Basketball from a fans perspective
This is bothersome
I’ve mentioned my wife hardly follows basketball.  Despite this fact she was aware of the Las Vegas story and LaVar Ball.  I informed her and I’ll share with you my conversation. After Lonzo Ball had a good summer showing on the court I hoped LaVar news would slow. Instead of him slowing down everybody and their brother continues to place microphones and tape recorders in front of LaVar.  The view might be “how outrageous” can this guy become with his mouth. Muhammad Ali did a great deal of talking back in the day, history shows the “Louisville Lip” as he was dubbed usually backed up his bravado in the ring.

What can LaVar prove at this point other than talk?  Despite what he says at his age he certainly can’t go on the court against Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson and effectively compete A better question might be why would it even be necessary for either they have nothing to prove we already know both are champions.  As for LaVar Ball that’s a far different story.  I hope all three of his son’s find success on the basketball court however daddy needs to shut his pie hole.

They certainly are bigger (and maybe stronger)
Mizzou fans cannot help their excitement regarding the upcoming season.  The last few years the Tigers were often “beat up” on the boards.  Not only were they often out rebounded they were often out scored as well.  It’s hoped all the negatives will be stored away never to be re-visited again.  The Tigers have count them 8 players on the roster taller than 6-7, four of them stand 6-10 and I’m not including Jontay Porter in the count.

The younger Porter has committed but yet to sign a letter of intent, by the way he’s 6-9. Junior forward Kevin Puryear has height (6-7) and bulk at 243 pounds but was often forced to compete against taller adversaries.  Puryear scored nearly 12 points a game his freshman and sophomore year.  The Kansas City area talent now has plenty of help. Height does not equate to wins all elements of the game must come together to be successful.  Now you can understand why much of the Mizzou Nation is so excited about the 2017-18 season.

He’s a grown man
The last time I checked I believe Kyrie Irving is a grown man.  He’s an adult fully capable of making adult decisions.  Allow me to explain further, I didn’t read the story only the headline.  It read something like; “Kobe talks to Kyrie” or “advises Kyrie.”  My wife’s cousin the Kobe hater said to me; “How come Kobe’s talking to Irving trying to convince him to leave?”

I laughed because I said at the beginning of this account Kyrie is a grown man.  I asked my wife’s LeBron loving cousin “What you gonna do next year when LeBron joins the Lakers.”  As I explained earlier I don’t won’t LeBron on the Lakers but his response was classic, the Kobe and Laker hater said; “I’ll root for the Lakers because of LeBron, “case closed.

Charles Barkley too?
By now you’ve read or heard the reported rumor LeBron James is headed to the Lakers in 2018, same for Paul George I even heard Charles Barkley might un-retire.  This might be Barkley's last opportunity to win a championship.  Folks I’m just kidding about Barkley however I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear or read a similar report the media has every free-agent headed to the Lakers next season.  The reasoning varies but I’ll try to explain the names of those presented to us.  LeBron James returned to Cleveland, he led the Cavs to a championship.  A professional championship no one in Northern Ohio had witnessed since 1964.

There’s been no love lost between owner Dan Gilbert and LeBron after all Gilbert made several ugly statements about LeBron after he departed.  You tell me I haven’t heard any talk since his return of he and Gilbert becoming BFF’s forever.  As for George he is Southern California born and bred, he grew up rooting for the Lakers.  We could see the attraction in playing in the NBA in front of any number of your former elementary and high school teachers.  George’s reasons might be different from LeBron but I ask the question is it that important to play in Los Angeles?

Basketball from a fans perspective
They want him gone
We’re in the middle of baseball and NFL training camps have opened this week.  I walked into the barber shop wanting to discuss the Royals and Chiefs.  The shop wasn’t crowded however those gathered sung the same tune they wanted to discuss Kyrie Irvin and the Cavs.  I wasn't sure what to expect but found the two barbers and the five patrons were clearly on LeBron's side in this story.

I never heard one person state the Cavs should seek to retain Irvin, everyone seem to believe the Cavs would be a better team without Irvin which I found a little surprising.  Just a couple of points raised by shop patrons, “LeBron was worn out forced to play point forward.”  Another said; “Irving’s not that good a defensive player anyway.”  The “possibility of a trade with the Suns and the Cavs picking up (Josh) Jackson and (Eric) Bledsoe would greatly benefit them.”

This confirms earlier reports
Marvin Bagley III is a  6-10 (or 11) power forward, he’s really good so good he’s rated the number one prospect in the Class of 2018.  That’s all changed now, Bagley has reclassified in order to become eligible for 2017.  Submitting paperwork is no guarantee of automatic NCAA approval.  We must wait to see how this plays out and if approved where is he headed for one year, no doubt in my mind he is a one and done prospect.

He placed the school on the college basketball map
Georgetown played basketball prior to the 1972-73 season the first year John Thompson served as the school’s basketball coach.  Georgetown actually first began play in the 1906-1907 however this academic institution had little success on the court before hiring the Hall of Fame coach.  The 6-10 Thompson played his college basketball at Providence was drafted by the Celtics in 1964.  The Celtics had a guy playing center back then and Thompson would only serve as a reserve.  The guy in front of him------Bill Russell.  Big John would play for two seasons before taking the head coaching job at a high school.

Keep in mind this was the middle ’60’s and front line players salaries were below $100,000 a year.  Thompson might have earned more coaching high school that first year than he did with the Celtics.  Thompson would coach St. Anthony’s for six years prior to his hire at Georgetown. Imagine in 2017 a major university hiring a head coach with only high school experience.  The rest of Thompson’s story has been documented but the early years are not well known by many. Hopefully this fills in the gap for those wanting to know more of the history of “Big” John Thompson who retired from coaching in 1999.

They MUST succeed!
Lonzo Ball and Michael Porter Jr. are under intense pressure to succeed.  Ball is expected to lead the Lakers back to playoff basketball after distinguishing himself in Summer League play.  As I indicated earlier Magic Johnson might be the main culprit in the “Lonzo Ball is will return the Lakers to past glory. “  Porter Jr. is viewed in much the same manner, Mizzou basketball has been trending downward under former Coach Kim Anderson.

MJPJr. Is projected to be top choice in the 2018 NBA Draft and is yet to set foot on the Mizzou floor to determine if he can play at a high skill level.  We might include Sixer Ben Simmons in this discussion because much is expected of his play for the Sixers.  How about Markelle Fultz, Jayson Tatum or Josh Jackson you ask?  They too might face intense pressure to succeed, the three profiled appear to have a larger burden to make it big than others.

Basketball from a fans perspective

We can only guess

Mitchell Robinson was the number eight prospect in the Class of 2017.  Western Kentucky had quite the coup acquiring the talent of the 7 foot center; he signed a LOI in late June. Robinson is now out, the news is reporting he attended summer school but has decided he wants to attend another school.  The assistant coach who is Robinson’s godfather is no longer on the head coaches’ staff.  Less than a month till school begins Robinson must request a release if he intends to enroll elsewhere.  Not really unusual for student/athletes to go this route but prior to school beginning is certainly strange.

Jayhawks in the NBA
Nobody (including me) can complain if someone manages an income above that of an average wage earner.  We could certainly make that statement regarding many of the Kansas Jayhawks who play in the NBA past and present.  Take into consideration the NBA is not as mature as other professional sports.  1946 witnessed the birth of the Basketball Association of America, in 1948-1949 the BAA merged with the National Basketball League to form the NBA of today.

In 71 years of NBA play you might question how many players gained their skill at Kansas; you might find this number a little surprising.  Please note the players profiled the years of NBA play and concludes with the number of All Star appearances.  4 of the 6 you see below are in the Hall of Fame, Paul Pierce retired at the conclusion of the 2017 season is not yet eligible. Wiggins has what appears at the beginning of play a career that might eventually lead him into the HOF.

Clyde Lovellette NBA 1952-1964,  4X NBA All Star, Naismith HOF
Wilt Chambelain NBA 1959-1973, 13X NBA All Star, Naismith & College HOF
Jo Jo White NBA 1969-1981, 7X NBA All Star, Naismth HOF
Danny Manning NBA 1988-2003, 2X NBA All Star, Naismth HOF
Paul Pierce NBA 1998-2017, 10X NBA All Star
Andrew Wiggins NBA 2014-present, NBA Rookie of the Year

Before Kansas fans begin tossing rocks in my direction I excluded active players who one day could be included.  They include Joel Embiid if he can remain healthy, Kelly Oubre Jr. and the Morris twins Markieff and Marcus.  5 All Pros and 1 on the cusp, it should be of note Chamberlain is the HOF at Naismith and College.

Best of the Best
I read a story which prompted this account.  Once upon a time the “off-season” meant just that, athletes in all sports would take the summer (or winter) as an opportunity to relax. Few athletes of the ‘50’s and ‘60’ exercised in the off season.  For that era of athlete training camp meant reporting out of shape and “playing yourself into condition.”

This era is different, there is no specific year or date but there was a change.  Basketball players’ vacation in the off season however they return prepared to begin their off-season conditioning.  As example LeBron James might be one of the best conditioned athletes of this period.  Wilt Chamberlain was one of the best of his era, he and several others could play in this time-period strictly on their skill level and condition.

Injury
He’s got two NBA Championship rings to Charles Barkley’s 0; I speak of Adam Morrison who “shot the lights out” while at Gonzaga.  As for the rings he was a reserve for the Lakers for the 2009 and 2010 championship.  Morrison was all everything while in college, drafted by the Bobcats (Hornets) he had a fair rookie year in 2007 making the All Rookie Second Team.

In his second year he tore an anterior cruciate ligament and the injury sidelined him for most of the season.  He and another player were traded to the Lakers were he saw little action; in 2010 the Lakers released Morrison.  He journeyed a few more years in Europe finally retiring from the game in 2012.  The question might be how much did the injury impact his career and would he have been successful.  We have no method to determine the answer to that question.

The Lonzo Ball Show
The Las Vegas portion of Summer League was supposed to be a coming out party for Ball.  A funny thing occurred on the way to the party Kyle Kuzma managed to crash it. Kuzma was the 27th pick in the first round by the Nets; he arrived from the Nets in the D‘Anglelo Russell-Brook Lopez trade.  The 6-9 Kuzma led the way for the Summer League Lakers with a 20 ppg average.

It might be difficult for him to find playing team once the season begins but not impossible. Kuzma was named to the second team of the NBA Summer League.  The youngster emerged from Utah with very little hype, I don’t believe he will continue to be hidden once the NBA season starts.  Will there be bumps in the road--of course however the belief is he’s got game

Queens
In the movie “Coming to America” Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) arrived on the shores of the United States from the fictional African nation of Zamunda.  The prince came to Queens in search of a wife that was movie fiction.  Searching for basketball talent rather than a wife also finds us in Queens where we discover Moses Brown a 7-1 225 pound center.

As for the talent issue Rivals.com rates Brown the number seven prospect in the Class of 2018. I find it interesting we continue to discuss the change over to small ball yet players continue to grow in height.  There will always be a requirement as Dick Vitale might say for “Aircraft Carriers”, i.e. Big Men.  A number of college teams have offers on the table however it appears Maryland has the inside track although he’s yet to commitment.

Big Baller Brand
The place was Las Vegas Nevada, the annual AAU Tournament play in the city.  SC Supreme led by number two 2018 prospect Zion Williamson faced off against Big Baller Brand with LaMelo Ball.  SC Supreme won the game 104-92 with Williamson scoring 28 points along with 8 rebounds.  LaMelo put up 31 points with 12 rebounds and 5 assists. The gym was standing room only with hundreds outside denied entry due to the building’s capacity.

Seattle on the NBA’s “short” list
Commissioner Silver indicates if (and when) the NBA expands Seattle will likely be awarded a franchise.  I’ve long believed the league owes the city over their handling of allowing the team to make the move to Oklahoma City.  Show of hands who thought the Sonics would remain in the city after being sold to Oklahoma interests?

Thought so, you believed as I did the Seattle Sonics would soon be history as it eventually turned out.  Since that time every effort to revive the NBA in the Pacific Northwest has failed; the Kings were believed on the way until former Commissioner Stern “saved” the franchise for Sacramento.  The Kings were headed to Seattle if not for Stern’s intervention.  The NBA is in no hurry to expand nor should they be Seattle will return one day.

I’m gonna try
Hold on, I may have changed my mind once again.  I thought instead of publishing everyday Words eye view would be available Monday through Friday.  I thought during the summer months there would be smaller amount of basketball news to report.  I cannot remember last year except for Kevin Durant moving and the draft but this summer is far different.  I know it’s not occurred however it seems everyday a story breaks.  Beginning this week Words eye view will revert to a seven day a week publication for the foreseeable.  Thanks for your continued loyalty.

“Are we there yet”?
Mizzou will be participating in the 2017 AdvoCare Invitational to be held November 23, 24 and 26.  The tournament site is the HP Fieldhouse near Orlando Florida.  Besides Mizzou the field includes Long Beach State, Marist, Nebraska, Oregon State, St. John’s, UCF and West Virginia.  This will be the first true test of Cuonzo Martin’s Tigers and will go a long way to determine “Are we there yet”?  I   would imagine those outside the Orlando area will be able to view games on one of the sports channels.

Amazing
I continue to be amazed by Stephen A. Smith, his tone whenever someone disagrees with a story or statement.  Don’t get me wrong I’ve always believed in a free press but one that is accurate.  Smith reports stories “he’s heard” as fact however unless you talk directly with the individual it becomes hearsay.  That statement applies to this writer as well, Smith gets highly agitated when the party involved in a story he’s reported says it ain’t so.  The latest to receive a “screaming” response is LeBron James.

Smith did this a few years back at the time Kevin Durant was a member of the Thunder.  Durant contradicted the report he went off on Durant on his ESPN morning program he even threatened Durant.  The latest Smith account involves Kyrie Irving and LeBron James.  Smith on ESPN radio reported a statement attributed to LeBron James by Kyrie Irving, LeBron said it ain’t so.  Now Smith has gone off on LeBron James, my question why must Smith insert himself into stories?  Smith continues to fall back on “his sources” for the accuracy of his reporting.

Bits n Pieces
The 2017 NBA Draft is over and I’m looking early to the 2018 draft.  Two mock draft sites list the same player as number one for next season. DraftExpress.com and NBADraft.net for 2018 list Michael Porter Jr. 6-10 small forward from Mizzou as their top choice.  Mizzou faces the same dilemma as Kentucky, Duke and North Carolina have experienced in the past.   A consensus number one NBA prospect on their roster guarantees the player is history after one year.

As this is written the NCAA has not rendered a decision whether Louisville will retain its 2013 championship.  If we follow the line given by the NCAA the coaching staff was in violation of established guidelines, does Michigan become the NCAA Champion for 2013?  This issue dates back to the 1950 champion CCNY team involved in a point shaving scandal; it includes other schools involved in “after” improprieties.  I‘m certainly not defending Coach Pitino or Louisville basketball however every team since 1950 has never had their name removed from the championship trophy.

The Lakers don’t need Paul George; there is no requirement for LeBron James to leave Cleveland for Southern California.  That’s just my opinion, Magic Johnson and company might have a totally differently idea.  I’ve held conversations with my wife regarding dinner and they sometimes go like this.  Wife:  “What do you want for dinner?”  Me:  “I don’t want_______and I don’t want________.”  Wife:  “You’ve told me what you don’t want, what do you want?” If one or both should become Lakers I must accept them as members of the purple and gold.  My preference is Magic and company continues to draft talent and infuse it rather than depend on “leftovers.”

??????
Derrick Rose signs with the Cavs, what does this signing represent for the Cavs?  I have absolutely no idea the MVP version of Rose left "the building" a number of years ago succumbing to a series of injuries.  Although he remains a good player he certainly is no longer All-Star caliber but maybe that might be enough alongside LeBron James.  With the Kyrie Irving news perhaps the belief is he will replace Irving in the starting lineup.  Even more interesting to me is the Kobe Bryant connection to this story, Kobe remains retired at this stage but this tidbit of information.

Kobe haters who know my love for the Lakers and number 24 reminded me monthly, weekly and several daily what a poor teammate Kobe Bryant was.  “He ran Shaq out of town” or “He wasn’t a good for the team” or “Kobe takes too many shots.”  There were others but I highlighted many of the statements I heard over the years.  Now that Kyrie Irving indicates he’s got no desire to remain a teammate of LeBron all I can hear are crickets.  I’ve contact two in particular receiving no response.  I’m not trying to pick on LeBron or anyone else but consider this fact.  There could be a basis for Kyrie desiring to leave the public has no clue, a different matter when that player you want to extricate yourself has allowed you to play in three consecutive NBA Finals winning one.

No wonder
Steve Ballmer dislikes the fact his Clippers remain in second place with most of the Southern California populace.  The popularity exists despite over the last several years the won-loss record of the Clippers has exceeded that of the Lakers.  A recent survey by the Southern California News Group must drive him crazy.  This is the third year they have surveyed the 50 most powerful sports figures in Southern California.  Just in case you wondered or didn’t read the details there are nine pro teams plus six division one programs in the Metro.

Individuals such as former boxer Oscar De La Hoya Mayor Gil Garcetti and Angels outfielder Mike Trout were included in the survey.  Jeanie Buss Laker owner finished in first place, what about Ballmer you ask?  Ballmer finished in eighth place behind Eric Garcetti mayor of Los Angeles and Stan Kroenke Rams owner as an example.  Surveys are just that, there is no basis of fact just someone or a groups view of a subject.  Ballmer remains a billionaire despite where he finished in this opinion poll.

Super teams
No….…..I’m not referring to the Warriors or any other NBA team past or present.  The reference is actually to college teams.  High school All American Lew Alcindor and NYC native chose to attend UCLA in 1966 soon afterwards All American Lucius Allen signed with the school too.  I’ve never read anywhere the former Wyandotte HS guard from Kansas City Kansas was acquainted with Alcindor but I’m sure they were aware of one another.  The AAU existed back then but nowhere near the level it currently exists.

The youngsters of today either play on the same teams or become acquainted with one another through AAU basketball.  It’s likely there are more “assembled” teams than we might realize.  A portion of this story is yet to be confirmed, Shareef O’Neal son of Shaquille O'Neal is a 6-8 forward Class of 2018 prospect.  Young O'Neal committed to Arizona in April, Bol Bol  son of Manute Bol is a 7-1 power forward also in the same class.  Bol is rumored as this is written to be headed to Arizona as well.  O’Neal and Bol attend different Southern California high schools although they became teammates on a summer AAU team in 2017.

On really!
In a surprising news story we discover Steve Ballmer is not pleased.  It seems no matter how good his Clippers perform on the court they still rank second in the hearts and minds of most Angelino’s.  There are several reasons why I believe the Clippers are in second place these are but three that come to mind almost immediately.

A. 16 NBA Laker Championships
B.  Sub par Clipper play until recent years
C.  Sharing Staples Center

I’ve made this statement in the past and it bears repeating.  I believe Ballmer might still reside in the Seattle Metro from his days as chief executive officer of Microsoft.  The answer is simple Ballmer should move the Clippers to Seattle his team would become the only NBA team in town.

No…….Joe please no
ESPN’s Joe Lunardi is the NCAA Tournament guru I’ve listened over the years as he’s discussed which teams which are tournament bound.  I’ve never had an occasion to disagree with him until NOW.  ESPN’s NCAAM page contains a story written by Lunardi indicating the tournament should be expanded to 72 teams.

In 2011 the tournament field was expanded to 68 but why the additional 4 teams are required. One of the concerns mentioned was the increase numbers of teams moving to the Division I level.  The NIT once a prestige post-season tournament is no longer what it once was.   I’m not going to attempt to convince you to my side read Lunardi’s account and make your own judgment.

What’s the plan?
Change is forthcoming we are just not sure exactly when, it appears at some point the one n done will become history as the NBA adapts a new rule.  Commissioner Silver appears to favor change of the one year out of high school or age 19.  Silver will likely receive push-back from the NBA Players Association.  The proposal is to allow high school athletes in the draft once again.  If an athlete chooses to attend college he must remain in school a minimum of two years.

The present rule has a number of college coaches (and fans) upset.  It’s been reported several athletes headed to the NBA have failed to even show up for their spring classes.  I’ve heard no one except former Coach and analyst Bobby Knight claim this to be true.  To a lesser degree the change could prove beneficial to the NBA as well.  Scouts do an excellent job of assessing talent however this change with two years of college basketball would ensure a prospect played more than 30 games before attempting to commence an NBA career.  What do you think?

Can he play?
On more than one occasion I’ve mentioned I don’t know Euro players.  99% of them I’ve never seen play until they make an NBA roster.  Every year I make the same pledge and fail to follow through, my objective is to follow Euro basketball games anytime they are featured on NBA TV.  I might have stated earlier I have no idea if 2017 draft pick Frank Ntilikina has an NBA game.

Scouting reports indicate he does but game action against competition will be the determining factor. Hopefully the Knicks have the point guard they need if not now for the future. I could have made the same statement about Kristaps Porzingis, in the instance of both.  I knew their names but had no idea if they could play.  Two years later we know Porzingis can play we can make the statement despite the poor won-loss record of the Knicks.

Bits n Pieces
The Cavs continue to make news in the off-season; the latest news Kyrie Irving has requested the team trade him.  Officially general manager David Griffin was fired, unofficially LeBron James appears headed to Los Angeles to play for the Lakers or the Clippers next year and now this.  The Cavs franchise appears to be in a state of flux at this time.  Most surprising, they are the defending Eastern Conference Champions.

Kamaka Hepa is a name few know; he’s a 6-9 forward from Jefferson High School in Portland (OR).  That’s not his original home he’s actually from Barrow Alaska, Barrow is as far north as an American can live and still reside in the U.S.  Hepa is an Eskimo and he might be the first to play Division I basketball, he participated in the Nike Peach Invitational recently.  Several Division I schools have made offers to Hepa so expect to see him in 2018 at a major college.

He’s reported to be extremely raw however allow me to introduce you to 7-5 Matt Van Komen. Van Komen is from Lehi (UT) and is a Class of 2019 prospect.  Recently he was matched against 7-1 Bol Bol in the West Coast Elite Summer Classic.  You are familiar with the name Bol, I found it interesting the media covered the game but provided no final score, and we have do idea which team won.

“Laker rookie signs shoe deal”
The above headline would lead one to believe this was likely Lonzo Ball.
After all he would likely sign a contract with his family BBB brand.  Surprise, surprise, surprise it wasn’t Lonzo Ball -----it was Kyle Kuzma.  The former Utah Ute was named MVP of the champion Laker Summer League team announced his signing with Nike.

This was summer league (rookies & second year athletes) so I’m certainly not going overboard with praise.   Kuzma managed to average 21.9 ppg, 6.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists during play.  As was mentioned earlier he was drafted by the Jazz and his rights traded to the Lakers.  The 6-9 player claims he can play anywhere but is likely to see service at the small forward position.

Number three
I wondered how many NBA players has Finland produced, according to RealGM only two thus far, Hanno Mottola played at Utah and was drafted by the Hawks in 2000, his career was brief. Erik Murphy with dual U.S./Finn citizenship played at Florida and later in the NBA with the Bulls, neither of the two is in the NBA at present.

On June 22 Lauri Markkanen changed all that when he became the number seven pick by the Wolves, his rights were later traded to the Bulls.  Markkanen a 7 foot power forward is from Vantaa, Finland and played his college ball at Arizona.  Markkanen proves the point outside of football (soccer) basketball and the NBA might be the world’s second most popular sport.

Shhhhhhhh!
I’m sure it’s impossible to ask LaVar Ball for silence but this is not aimed at him rather its Magic Johnson one of my heroes.  Magic please tone it down regarding Lonzo Ball, you are placing untold pressure on him to succeed.  Example, “He reminds me of me” or “I expect to see your jersey hanging up there” (Staples) might do greater harm to the young man than the national media.

This is a change
It’s been quite a number of years since Mizzou attempted to recruit a player from the State of Kansas.  My memory says we must travel back to 1976 when Larry Drew left Wyandotte HS (KCK) for Columbia (MO).  It’s clear in recent years the shadow of Kansas and to a lesser degree Wichita State basketball looms larger over high school players in the State of Kansas. There is no guarantee Coach Martin will be successful with these Class of 2019 prospects however it is interesting nonetheless.  They are:

Jeremiah Robinson-Earl 6-9 C/F Mission (KS)
Zach Harvey 6-4 wing Topeka (KS)

Both players are 4-star prospects and the significance is easy to understand.  Despite Mizzou’s sub-par won-loss record over the last few years Mizzou is comfortable attempting to recruit players from Kansas.

Who is he?
A SoCal guy coming home that might be part of the description for Brook Lopez.  He and his twin brother grew up in North Hollywood (CA) played their college ball at Stanford. Lopez was drafted by the Nets as the 10th pick in the first round of the 2008 draft.  Who is he; well Lopez is a skilled offensive center with a career 18.6 ppg average.  As for the balance of his game Lopez is an average on the boards despite his 7 foot 268 pound frame.

Lopez might be described as an average defender on the pick and roll.  At age 29 he should be able to hold down the center position until second year center Ivica Zubac or rookie Thomas Bryant is ready to begin play full time.  Lopez would be an improvement over Timofey Mozgov who was the starter for most of the season.  As for Lopez it would appear playing along side Lonzo Ball should certainly enhance his game.

Complete domination
I just read a story about the upcoming Big 12 season, the writer predicts the Kansas Jayhawks will win or tie for their 14th straight tournament championship.  UCLA in the days of Alcindor, Walton and Wilkes dominated the conference in a similar manner but that was a different time. UCLA dominated not only its conference but the nation as well winning championship after championship.

This is a different age from that of the ‘60’s and ‘70’s college basketball programs across the nation have grown immensely since that period.  Bill Self have a coaching advantage-perhaps, does Self recruit the best talent in the nation-perhaps.  I’m going to indict Big 12 coaches past and present few have stepped up to compete with Self and Kansas.  Bob Huggins, Shaka Smart and others prove to us you and your teams are better than we might believe.

Feel good story
Many of you might be familiar with the Caleb Swanigan story.  Growing up in an unstable home he was adopted as a pre-teen but that’s only part of the story.  It was reported in high school he stood 6-2 but weighed a hefty 360 pounds.  His adopted father put him on a strict diet and conditioning routine.  By the time he was a high school senior Swanigan raised his game to the level of a McDonald’s All American.

Two years at Purdue and he was ready for the NBA or so he believed.  The Blazers would make Swanigan the 26th pick in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft.  Swanigan distinguished himself earning All NBA Summer League First Team.  The 6-9 youngster scored nearly 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds a game for the Blazers.  This is no indication of future success but considering where Swangian’s come from I cannot help but root for a successful NBA career for him.

Don‘t know his game
My Lakers signed free agent shooting guard 6-5 Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.  I admit I’ve seen few Piston games since Pope was drafted in 2013.  The truth is I’m really unsure if I ever witnessed his play period.  He was the number eight pick in the draft that year from Georgia, he’s scored in double figures three of his first four seasons in the association.

A number of scouts indicate Pope not only has the ability to score but has a defensive presence on the court.  Pope is only signed to a 1-year contract so Laker fans must adopt a wait and see how the Magic-Pelinka plan works out for Pope.  Despite his veteran status Pope is only 24 years old and could have a long and successful tenure with the Lakers.

The news of the Rockets sale sparks stories regarding potential buyers.  A number of “fat-cat’s live in the Houston area and certainly could be considered on a short list.  One potential celebrity owner was born and raised in Houston.   Queen B., Beyonce certainly has the financial clout to afford the purchase even with partners.  You said Beyonce has no interest in owning an NBA team that might be true but consider she was once an owner.   Husband Jay-Z owned a small portion of the Brooklyn Nets, was it his money or hers?

Oprah Winfrey and partners were in the bidding process for the Clippers before they were eventually sold to Steve Ballmer.  Junior Bridgeman had an extensive playing career in the NBA; he’s made a great deal of money since his retirement.  Bridgeman along with allies could also afford to purchase the Rockets.  The names mentioned are purely speculation; one thing for sure there will be no shortage of potential suitors to purchase the franchise. This name is official Dikembe Mutombo who once played for the Rockets indicates he will put together a group to purchase the team.

He’s “Ball (ling) “
I’m attributing this to the Lonzo Ball factor, it’s the fact the media seems to be paying far more attention to summer ball.  I can correct some facets for them, Summer League is not playoff basketball its not even regular season NBA.  July is the time rookies and a number of second year players’ work on various aspects of their game.  Players have look amazing in the summer however when regular season begins many have the deer in the headlights look.

I would be less than honest if I said I didn’t have a desire to see Ball in action against NBA competition that would be ridiculous.  Ball and others are going to have up and down years in the NBA however one rookie will stand out.  That rookie will be announced as Rookie of the Year.  Who that might be at this stage I have no idea stay tuned for the result.  Sure as I’m sitting here a rookie will have an outstanding game over that of Fultz, Ball or Tatum

No Ball, no matter
Lakers won the championship of the Las Vegas portion of the Summer League.  There was no Lonzo Ball to be seen he'd been sidelined with was later described as a low grade strain in his right leg.  Despite Ball sitting on the sidelines the Lakers managed to defeat the Blazers 110-98. Kyle Kuzma led the way for these young Lakers scoring a team high 30 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.  He was named Summer League Finals MVP.

We don’t know
The Mizzou faithful are anticipating improved play over that we witnessed last season.  On second thought that might be an understatement based on Mizzou’s 8-23 record last season and 10-21 the previous season.  One of the “missing” but committed players is Jontay Porter younger brother of Michael Jr.  Jontay is the same height but a hefty 240 pounds.

The only remaining question is re-classification, does Jontay arrive on campus in 2018 or will it be 2019?  Also in the same boat might be Marvin Bagley.  The 6-11 220 pound Bagley is listed as the number one pick in the Class of 2018.  Bagley is yet to make a commitment however it’s reported he might be headed to Arizona in the fall of 2017.

I might have an explanation
Thon Maker’s name was well known; we believed he was headed to college rather than the NBA. Why he arrived early in the NBA is another story this account revolves around the fact Maker’s name was not included on many scouting sights.  It’s impossible to track the world’s basketball players and it’s my belief Rivals and other sights decided in favor of tracking players in the U.S. only.

Maker attended schools in Louisiana and Virginia and later transferred to Orangeville Prep in Orangeville Canada about 60 miles from Toronto.  Now for the explanation the number one prospect in Rivals Class of 2019 is R.J. Barrett enrolled at Montverde Academy in Florida. Barrett is from Mississauga Ontario about 18 miles from Toronto.  I believe Barrett is listed by Rivals (and others) because he’s attending high school in the U.S. it’s that simple.

Train ride nowhere
The 2016-17 it was believed the Knicks were on the road to success.   Phil Jackson had brought in a number of players likely to aid them in becoming a better team.  The season turned out to be a disaster and Phil Jackson took much of the blame for the lack of success.  The Knicks (31-51) were not much better than the previous season when they finished 32-50.  Based on a second look maybe Phil Jackson has been unfairly crucified by the media considering the roster he assembled at the beginning of last season.  PJ brought in Joakim Noah and Derrick Rose from the Bulls and Courtney Lee from the Grizzlies.

They would join holdovers Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis.  Noah would only play 46 games and Rose played a few more (64) to be exact.  Both former All Stars succumbed to injuries.  Lee had a so-so season nothing to get excited about.  As for the others Anthony had a fairly productive year however PJ mentioned on more than one occasion his desire to trade Anthony.  As for Porzingis he played but 66 games however had good numbers in those he played.  This train that looks as though it was headed down the tracks toward the playoffs was derailed once again. Is the problem Coach Jeff Hornacek and the Triangle Offense the problem?  That well could be however it might be lack of talent and chemistry between roster members.

BREAKING NEWS
As I was completing a portion of Words eye view this breaking news came across my television screen.  Owner Leslie Alexander has placed the Houston Rockets on the market.  How many potential owners will step forward is an unknown number.  According to Forbes the 2017 book value of the Rockets is $1.65 billion dollars.  The only condition placed on the sale of the team it must remain in Houston.  I’m curious to discover how long the Rockets remain on the market.

“Must be the shoes”
Once again I’m walking back on a promise to myself.  I promised myself it would be Lonzo Ball’s play only I wouldn’t focus on the shoe issue and hear I go.  Ball has worn a number of shoes over the course of Summer League play.  First it was the BBB shoes by LaVar Ball then later it was the Kobes then Hardens and Currys.

Nike, Adidas and Under Armour----on Sunday night Ball was sporting Jordan 31’s.  As for Monday night’s championship game a strained quad will keep Ball on the bench for the evening’s match.  This might be an effort on the part of Lonzo or LaVar to secure a shoe deal with one of the major manufactures.  As a side note the figures below represent shoe sales in the U.S. in addition the Jordan Brand is counted in the Nike sales total.

 Under Armour 4%

Bits n Pieces
The latest issue involving Rick Pitino revives an issue which has bothered me for several years.  Athletes no matter the level must be retired before Hall of Fame consideration.  There is no requirement for coaches and we can point to several active coaches in the Hall.  North Carolina’s Roy Williams, Jim Boeheim Syracuse and Louisville’s Rick Pitino are just a few in addition to sterling won-loss records they also share trouble.  Trouble in the form of NCAA problems related to their programs.  The latest on Pitino echoes the theme aimed at Williams and Boeheim “lack of institutional control.”

One of the methods teams improve is to infuse youthful talent into their lineup.  Unfortunately the Lakers draft history since 2010 has been rather spotty.  2010 was the last year the team won an NBA Championship.  From 2010 to 2013 the Lakers had no first round pick all the drafted players were chosen in the second round.  Considering Jordan Clarkson was a second round pick there are diamonds in the rough it just seems the Lakers swung and missed often.

I’ve done it you’ve done we all have at points in time.  Made dumb or Inappropriate comments at times.  I’ve long voiced my opposition to several of the statements made by ESPN’s “Screaming” Stephen A. Smith.  That doesn’t say he’s always wrong and I’m always correct----opinions are just that entitled to the originator no matter how ridiculous they might be.  Don’t provide me “fact” that cannot be proven to be correct that’s the height of ignorance for me.

On the move…….maybe
Part of this account is speculation pure and simple.  Phil Jackson made it known before he departed he wanted to trade Carmelo Anthony.  I believed once PJ was gone that would be the end of the story, Steve Mills took on the role of interim GM however he didn’t back down from the position taken earlier by PJ.  The Knicks them hired GM Scott Perry and promoted Mills to president.

There was still no changed in the position of the Knicks front office.  The change has come from the player himself, Anthony appears to want out of Gotham City.  The Rockets appear to be the ultimate destination however to consummate a trade its going to be somewhat complicated. It’s likely one or more teams might be involved to complete a trade.

“Being John Malkovich”
The title refers to a 1999 fantasy movie, John Cusak and others were able to enter the head of John Malkovich.  This becomes the basis for our account as it becomes “Being Chris Paul.”  We are crawling inside the mind of Paul and attempting to determine why the move from the Clippers to the Rockets.  Word is he wanted an opportunity to win a championship and that didn’t seem possible with the Clippers.

The question are the Rockets an upgrade over the Clippers even with Paul in the lineup?  The quick answer is no, I believe the Rockets despite moving a number of their roster remain a better team. Are they good enough to win an NBA Championship I don’t think so.  Crawling inside the mind of Chris Paul I believe he left the Clippers for reasons beyond the opportunity to win a championship.
“Kenny said it”
I’m okay with the Lakers draft picks and trades.  They get Big Man Brook Lopez along with a draft choice which became Kyle Kuzma 6-9 Utah forward.  A trade for the 30th pick landed them Josh Hart 6-6 shooting guard and the leading scorer for the Villanova Wildcats.  Through a trade they drafted another Big Man (6-11 248 pound) Thomas Bryant of Indiana.  Finally the Lonzo Ball factor; I have concerns however I must trust Magic Johnson on this choice.   If Magic believes this youngster can play at a high level I’m okay.

Nick Young a.k.a. Swaggy P. is history and this team is in a full scale youth movement.  At this point we guess the rookies will remain we have no idea if they might become a package deal in a Paul George sign and trade next season.   Kenny “The Jet” Smith said; “Old teams win championships not young ones” or similar words.  Other than Lonzo the Lakers are not likely to add three rookies to their roster or they?  On paper the youthful team should be improved over
2016-17 but not enough to challenge for a playoff spot in the Western Conference?

“You knew the job was dangerous when you took it”
In the middle ‘60’s an “adult cartoon” was added to the ABC Saturday morning lineup titled Super Chicken.  Super Chicken was just that a chicken with super powers however sometimes in risking stunts Super Chicken would sometimes injure Fred his partner.  Episode after episode Super Chicken’s response would always state; “You knew the job was dangerous when you took it Fred.” Phil Jackson should make the statement to Scott Perry, Perry is the newly hired Knicks general manager.

Perry has been hired to replace the aforementioned Jackson and his duties will be to re-shape the Knicks.  He will continue the effort to trade Carmelo Anthony and it likely to re-build this team around Kristaps Porzingis.  Good luck Mr. Perry this job is one of the most difficult in the NBA, the Knicks have been a train wreck for several years.  Hopefully owner Dolan and the New York media will allow you adequate time to build the team in your image.

It’s only Summer League people
“Nothing to see here people move along,” well that’s not exactly true.  Lonzo Ball had 6 TO’s versus the Sixers, the balance of his box score was a stat stuffer.  Ball played 36 minutes however we may have been provided a glimpse into the NBA future of this youngster.  This is certainly no attempt to claim this is the future for Ball it could be exciting if just a small portion might come to fruition.    Ball shot .545 from the floor scoring 36 points along with 11 assists 8 rebounds 5 steals and 2 blocked shots leading the way to a 103-102 victory.

At half-time Ball went behind the counter serving effectively as a vendor, just kidding about that folks.  You ask the question about Ball’s defense and I will say that’s an unknown.  A number of players are great at defense while others are good team defensive players.  There are other players who practice “matador” defense; it’s yet to be determined where Ball will ultimately lie in this area. He certainly has the height and nose for the ball (get it).  Laker fans please calm down, refrain yourselves it was only a Summer League game, “nothing to see here people move along.”

It could occur
I don’t remember when I first came to this conclusion, after years of pining for a Mizzou-Kansas game I just concluded I no longer care.  Bill Self had damned his former rival since Mizzou left the Big 12 Conference.  Kansas was determined they would never play Mizzou until Hell froze over.  To my knowledge Hell has not frozen over however the possibility of the two schools meeting is a possibility.  Tom Keegan KU Sports.com poses that very question he says the teams could meet in the 2018 NCAA Tournament which might occur.

Keegan discusses the possibility the teams could meet in the NCAA Tournament which is certainly possible.  In 2015 you don’t think the committee was salivating with the possibility of Wichita State playing Kansas.  As I pointed out earlier Kansas has refused to play Wichita State over the years, final score Wichita State 78 Kansas 65.  If Mizzou should meet Kansas in an NCAA so be it, this is one Mizzou fan that certainly has no desire to play the Jayhawks unless its tournament play.

I love it
Sport debates at the barber shop in between classes at school wherever they might occur I love them.  I must state only to a point, the media especially tends to dwell in the land of the impossible.  Example, they will match the 2000 Lakers against the 2017 Warriors or Michael Jordan versus LeBron James.

The 1927 Yankees versus the 1958 Yankees which team was better?  The teams, players and aspects of the game have changed over time how is a comparison logically accurate?  I would guess these types of debates make for media filler especially in television.  One on one at the barber shop and other locations debate is fun when it compares a generational difference that’s when it becomes ludicrous to me.  Debate is only fun to a point.

I’m not going to take credit
This is a portion of a discussion on Pardon the Interruption on ESPN between Michael Wilbon and Frank Isola.  Richard Sherman Seahawks cornerback was complaining about the money many of the NBA players would be receiving based on free-agency.  He stated something like “NFL players need to go on strike in order to raise our pay.”

Wilbon and Isola, “NBA teams are 12 players with 30 teams; the NFL is 53 players and 32 teams. The last time NFL players went on strike the owners hired replacement players.  You cannot find substitute talent for Kevin Durant and others.”  They are both correct, NBA players have gone on strike in the past for money and the league shut down period.  The NFL hires replacement players.

Coaching boo-boo
This is not what you believe it to be its something totally different.  I once worked with a former track coach who’d gone to work as a trainer in private industry.   We developed a friendship and he would often share coaching stories when time allowed.  Coach told me he once had from his description a “natural” sprinter. When he began working with the student suggesting tips to improve his time it actually worked as a detriment.  He informed me his sprinter registered slower times after he began coaching him.  Where am I going with this story you ask?

Basketball players often have unorthodox shots however it’s often the manner they learned as youth players.  Shawn Marion had a 16-year NBA career and one of the stranger shots in the NBA. Bol Bol is a 5-star prospect and the number three prospect in the Class of 2018, Lonzo Ball Laker rookie will begin play in the fall.  Bol and Ball are mentioned as needing work on their shooting mechanics.  I make no claim regarding my ability to coach shooting however coaches for both these youngsters might keep in mind “help but don’t hurt.”

Interesting
ESPN.com ran a story which college coach has the best job in each of the 50 states?  Some coaches were easy winners John Calipari and Dana Altman for example, my eyes focused on the State of Nebraska.  Nebraska has several Division I programs at first glance we might believe the University of Nebraska job would be the best in the state.  I had to search Google to discover the Cornhuskers coach is Tim Miles.

As for Creighton I know the name Greg McDermott without a search.  The Cornhuskers likely have the largest athletic budget but get this they selected Creighton University.  How about the fact long-time Creighton Coach Greg McDermott turned down the opportunity to coach Big 10 Ohio State.  The school once a member of the Missouri Valley moved to the Big East Conference in 2013 where Creighton continues to be competitive on the court.

He said what?
According to USA Today Austin Rivers was so concerned about the Michael Eaves ESPN story he picked up the telephone and made a call.  He contacted former Clipper point guard Chris Paul to clarify why Paul requested a trade.  Rivers claims Rivers indicated there were no problems between the two and he (Paul) “Just wanted a new challenge.”  We can only believe what we are told and that’s the story Rivers claims Paul is stating.  We hear young Rivers version of the story so we are faced with a choice we can choose to believe him or the report of Michael Eaves.

All dressed up and no place to go
The names were familiar although we failed to comprehend until they were placed in the same group.  Tom Crean, John Thompson III and Thad Matta will be hired somewhere if they are patient.  They were winners at Indiana, Georgetown and Ohio State respectively until recently, the schools decided in favor of a change.

The highly competitive world of college basketball leaves a coach with little “wiggle” room you lose you better update your resume.  I expect all will appear this upcoming season as analyst on one of the many sports networks.  To my knowledge the trio of Crean, Thompson III and Matta have no left-over NCAA baggage for any prospective school to check out.  It appears each appeared to run clean programs.

We know the outcome as for why…….
6-11 Mohamed Bamba was one of the most highly touted Class of 2017 prospects.  The youngster was high on the list of Scout.com, Rivals and ESPNU Recruitng Nation.  With a number of schools attempting to secure his service the Harlem (NY) baller made a late announcement to head for Texas to play for Shaka Smart.

Recently an issue was raised regarding his eligibility and who was the culprit in this account his older brother of all people.  The brother claimed that Bamba had received “unauthorized financial aid” over the years.  As I indicated previously we know all kinds of issues occur which cannot stand the light of day it appears this is not one.  The NCAA completed a second investigation and cleared Bamba to play this fall. Why his brother attempted to sabotage Bamba’s entry into college is certainly unknown.

They came out of retirement?
Check this out, at least with the Summer League teams there is a Bryant playing for the Lakers and a Bird on the Celtics team.  Kobe Bryant and Larry Bird did not decide to return to the playing ranks.  The Lakers roster contains rookie Thomas Bryant and the Celtics have rookie Jabari Bird guard on their roster.

The tallest point guard in the NBA
Lonzo Ball stands 6 foot 6 inches tall and the indication is he’s still growing.  Ball could grow another inch which would place him at the same height of the Warriors Shaun Livingston.  The two would be the tallest point guards in the NBA maybe.  Standing next to the 6-10 Ben Simmons would be giving away 4 inches in height.  Simmons in Las Vegas for Summer League basketball responded to a question and said; “I’m a starting point guard”.

There is no doubting the ability of Simmons as a passer he demonstrated his ability during his freshman year at LSU.  We might question why Simmons believes he’s a point guard since the Sixers drafted 6-4 Markelle Fultz number one in 2017.  Training camp and perhaps many of the Sixers early season games might be quite interesting seeing the passing skills of both Simmons and Fultz on the floor at the same time.

Remember Greg Oden?
I highly recommend you read the article by Seth Wickersham on ESPN’s NBA page.  Greg Oden former number one pick has not had the career we might have believed when he first arrived in the NBA.  You remember him don’t you, Oden emerged from Ohio State after but one year headed for the NBA.  How good was he you ask?

I mentioned in another article one scout dared compare Oden’s game to that of Bill Russell. Oden’s defensive presence was most noteworthy by this scout and others.  The Blazers with the number one pick in 2007 chose him, immediately after the Sonics would select Kevin Durant second.  I couldn’t add anything to Wickersham’s account by attempting to critique it. Read the article for yourself and draw your own conclusion.

He led the way to victory
I’m unsure if the game was on television and I missed it.  Its been reported R.J. Barrett 6-7 small forward led the way to victory for U19 Team Canada over the U.S. Team.  Barrett attends Montverde Academy in Montverde (FL) some 25 miles or so east of Orlando.  The projections are high for the youngster as he heads to school in the fall for his junior year; he’s rated the number one prospect in the Class of 2019 by Rivals and several other scouting sites.  NOTE: He’s on Mizzou’s list although no offers been made as this is written.

Help wanted
The Help sign remains hanging outside Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena and Madison Square Garden in New York City.  Chauncey Billiups interviewed for the Cavs GM position but later withdrew his name.  To date no other name has been mentioned regarding the Cavs opening. Speaking of the Cavs their former GM David Griffin interviewed for the Knicks job.

Griffin would announce he and the Knicks couldn’t come to an agreement on his role, what is that sayin‘?  Both teams are likely to have a GM in place before the beginning of the season but exactly who that might be is the question.  The same for the Knicks other than Griffin’s name I’ve read or heard no others mentioned.  In the meantime the Help Wanted sign will continue to hang outside both arenas.

If you’re a certain age you….
Might be familiar with Diekembe Mutombo or his given name Diekembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacque Wamutombo.  If you don’t remember him as a player maybe your recognize his Geico insurance and Mobil 1 spots.  These commercials and others have kept the 7 foot 2 Mutombo on our television screens long after his 2009 retirement.  Mutombo began his basketball journey from the Democratic Republic of the Congo where he was born.

In 1987 Mutomobo began play at Georgetown University and would become the 4th pick in the first round of the 1991 draft by the Nuggets.  Mutombo played for a number of NBA teams during the course of his career concluding with the Rockets.  He was never much of an offensive center his specialty was his defense during this brilliant 18-year career.  In 2015 Mutombo was elected to the Naismith Hall of Fame.  His classic finger wag was banned by the NBA because it was deemed he was taunting opposing players.  He would block an opponents shot at or near the basket and then the finger wave.

Pure Speculation
I wondered about the impact of Jerry West as a member of the Clippers front office. I speculated whether Doc Rivers running everything would listen to NBA icon Jerry West. Sure West was an advisor only however he was the architect of the Showtime Lakers among other career highlights. The trade of Chris Paul was well yes a shocker. Reports indicate Paul met with management and a discussion ensued on next season and the future direction of the team.

Paul’s decision to okay a trade must have meant he wasn’t thrilled with the discussion or what he perceived to be the direction of the team.  I heard a reporter state something I hadn’t considered. The fact that Austin Rivers the coaches’ son was in the same locker room with his teammates. Could young Rivers be one of the contributing factors for the departure of Paul? We’ll probably never know the complete story after all this is “pure speculation” on my part.

Vegas?
Is Las Vegas ever a loser when it comes to gambling?  I cannot answer the question due to the fact I only pay a superficial amount of attention to odds from the gambling capital.  I pay attention when I read something surprising which is a recent occurrence.  Vegas odds makers have the Lakers finishing ahead of the Clippers, repeat the Lakers over the Clippers in
2017-18.

The project is not overwhelming however the projection is the Clippers will finish with 34.5 wins and the Lakers 36.5, isn’t that interesting?  I remind myself over and over predictions are just that---predictions.  They don’t reflect reality, its real when you play the games and that’s the requirement for the upcoming season.  I still pose the question is Vegas ever a loser?
