Basketball from a fans perspective

Finland in the house
Despite what you might believe Lauri Markkanen will not be the first NBA player from Finland.  I check the records there have been two other players from that northern nation.  The 7-foot Markanen is a projected lottery pick so it’s understandable he’d leave Arizona after but one year.

Where do you recruit?
The other day a conversation was held on the blue-blood college programs and where they secure talent. California with its vast population and talent UCLA has the entire state to recruit. Kansas with smaller populace than all the schools must recruit nationwide.  Although the population is larger Kentucky also recruit’s the country.  North Carolina and Duke with talent and a large population is able to recruit a great deal of its team from within the state.  What do you think is this belief valid?

Coach of the Year
Warriors Coach Steve Kerr called Mike D’Antoni Coach of the Year, if you remember last week I said D’Antoni was MVP.  I made the statement based on the Rockets improved play over last system, the finger in this instance can be pointed at the coach.  The roster has changed but not substantially so it’s D’Antoni’s offense and “The Beard.”  James Harden has experienced an MVP year in part due to his talent and the balance D’Antoni’s offense.

In exclusive company
The McDonald’s All-Star game is just that---a game.  In addition All-Star games are played for fans not much structure to them.  The assembly of talent has little practice time to truly become a “team.”  Michael Porter Jr. (Mizzou) was selected game MVP for the Wednesday evenings Chicago game.

I checked the list of McDonalds MVP’s over the years, a number have faded into oblivion however several became valuable NBA talent.  In 2014 Jahlil Okafor was MVP, in 2013 slam dunk specialist Aaron Gordon.  How about Kevin Durant in 2006 or LeBron James in 2003, we could travel back in time to 1995 to locate a Kevin Garnett.  How about these names, in 1991 it was Chris Webber and 1989 Shaquille O’Neal were named game MVP‘s.

NBA Expansion
We’ve discussed expansion in Words on several occasions.  It’s possible now that the CBA is a signed agreement.  It’s possible at a future date the NBA could add two teams.  If expansion comes it will be two teams for obvious reasons, balance.  There are 30 NBA teams why add a single team requiring an unbalanced schedule.  We’ll move the Grizz into the Eastern Conference and the Bucks into the Western Conference but those are considerations once expansion is complete.  I located 5 on-line stories regarding NBA expansion, most contained the same list of cities.  The candidates for expansion:

Louisville
St. Louis
Seattle
Kansas City
Las Vegas
Anaheim (CA)
Hampton (VA)
Austin (TX)
Mexico City
Virginia Beach
Pittsburgh
Chicago
Cincinnati
Vancouver
New York

Seattle is certainly the leading candidate, which leaves one other city which one is it?  The NBA wants to expand in a market where success of a franchise is almost guaranteed.  That could be Chicago with the population and interest; would the Bulls ownership be willing to share the market with another?  New York has two NBA teams; consider the city once had three baseball teams.  The Greater Mexico City population is over 21 million folks and the NBA might desire to return to this Canadian city again so Vancouver?  Las Vegas is home to the NBA Summer League but has no other professional teams; the gambling issue appears to be in the rear-view mirror.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Folks its just a game---cool it
I didn’t see the game however it ain’t that serious, news reports indicate referee John Higgins has received death threats.  Higgins and crew were the officials for the North Carolina-Kentucky game. Kentucky fans were disappointed that is understandable but to threaten violence takes this to a different level. Coach Cal might have exacerbated the issue by discussing the number of fouls whistled on his Wildcats, North Carolina 75 Kentucky 73 final score.

“We eat at McDonalds”
Long-time Mizzou Coach Norm Stewart once questioned by a reporter, “You got any McDonald's All Americans on the team?”  The response from Stewart; “We don’t have any but we eat at McDonald's.”  The coach was attempting to humor the reporter.  Over the years Mizzou has never been over run with McDonald's All Americans however there have been a few. On Wednesday Michael Porter Jr. was in action in the 2017 McDonald's game, he joins a small group of Tigers in this All-Star Game.  The former players and the year they played are listed below.

*Alex Oriakhi-2009
Travon Bryant-2000
Anthony Peeler-1988
Derrick Chievous-1984

*UConn 2009-2012, Mizzou 2012-2013

Pittsburgh pro basketball
The NBA is not close to expansion but we occasionally hear conversation along that line. Familiar names are always mentioned; Seattle, Las Vegas, Louisville and Kansas City just to name a few. One name we NEVER hear in the conversation is Pittsburgh (PA) and I wondered why. I’ve never visited the city; only know a few folks from the city, this is an outsider’s perspective. Ever heard of the Pittsburgh Ironmen? The Ironmen was a charter member of the Basketball Association of America the league would later merge to become the National Basketball Association of today. The Ironmen only played the 1946-47 season before folding; they finished that season with a 15-45 record. The NBA remained “minor league” in scope however the league began to expand but Pittsburgh never appeared to be in the picture.

After being denied an NBA franchise the late Abe Saperstein owner of the Globetrotters founded the American Basketball League. Not to be confused with the ABA this 8-team league included a team from Pittsburgh the Rens, this time it wasn’t a Pittsburgh issue rather a league issue, the ABL played the 1961-62 season began the 1962-63 season however the league folded at the end of December. Pittsburgh was left out in the cold once again with no pro basketball team. The city would enter the world of pro basketball once again with the founding of the American Basketball Association or ABA. In 1967 the Pipers became a charter member of the ABA.

By this time period the NBA had truly become “major league” and that factor alone played a contributing factor in lack of interest to a team in an upstart league. The Pipers moved to Minnesota for the 1968-69 season and were no more successful there, the 1969-70 season they moved back to Pittsburgh. In 1970 the franchise changed names becoming the Condors; they lasted until June 1972 when "red ink" forced the ABA to fold the franchise. Many of the Condor players were taken by other ABA teams in a dispersal draft, since 1972 Pittsburgh has been without pro basketball. The NFL Steelers and baseball Pirates are an institution, in 1967 the NHL Penguins came into existence so the city has franchises in three of the four major sports. Perhaps at this juncture there no longer exists a desire for NBA basketball or any basketball (except college) in the "Steel City."

Yes ma’ am
The NBA has done more than any other professional sports in making diversity a priority.  This began with hiring minority coaches and then extended into the front office of a number of teams. Women have no longer been tied down to just serving as administrative assistant roles.  The Lakers, Clippers, Thunder and Jazz have women serving in key roles with the aforementioned teams.

Commissioner Adam Silver made news recently when he stated he could foresee the day an NBA team would have a female head coach.  USA Today provided a list of candidates Becky Hammons, Dawn Staley and Nancy Lieberman were a few of the names the account profiled. Having a female head coach would present no problem for a few players as for others it might be a different story.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Is he serious?
Steve Ballmer is a very rich guy; he once served as chief executive officer of Microsoft.  He owns the Clippers purchased them for $2 billion (with a b) dollars so that gives you some idea of his net worth.  Ballmer is tired of Staples Center and wants to build his own arena, his Clippers share space with the Lakers, NHL Kings and every other entertainment event in the building.  You can change the seating and reconfigure the floor to reflect the Clippers but it remains the fact its remains the Lakers building.  Consider this tidbit there are 16 championship banners and retired Laker jerseys hanging in the rafters.

It bothered Doc Rivers so much when he became coach he had them covered, he could cover them but cannot take them down.  Everyone in the building realizes there are banners behind the covering.  Reports indicate Ballmer is in discussions with Rams owner Stan Kroenke regarding the stadium development in Inglewood.  The lease at Staples ties the Clippers down until 2024 but Ballmer could afford to break the lease if he desired.  The Clippers will continue to be the ’other’ team in Los Angeles until they win a championship.  Earning a playoff spot every year is certainly noteworthy but so do 7 other Western Conference teams.  Winning in Staples would be great however winning in your own building is even greater, it would set them apart from the Lakers.

Early entry list
I did a quick count and the early entry list for the NBA Draft as this is written contains 15 names. The numbers change almost on a daily basis therefore I won’t attempt to list player by player.  I will just repeat what I’ve read and you’ve already heard the 2017 draft on the surface appears to be much better than 2016.

Negative people
Unlike many of you I don’t have the ability to peer into the future.  I must have been absent the day the professor dealt with Psychic Ability 101.  See I am unable to determine Cuonzo Martin’s impact on the Mizzou basketball program.  I believe it will be positive but I have no method to determine that until next fall.  This exercise in silliness is based on many of the letters I’ve read not from the media but ordinary folks.

His first year at Missouri State his team finished 11-20 the next season 24-12 Martin departed for Tennessee after his third year leaving with a 26-9 record and a second round NIT appearance.  His Vol team finished slightly above .500 his first year and won 20 and 24 games before he took the Cal job.  It’s no secret the Tennessee faithful loved Bruce Pearl although his tenure saw the school placed on probation for NCAA infractions.  Martin’s teams at Cal earned post-season play two out of the three years he was at the helm.  We know Martin can recruit and will be quite valuable on the St. Louis side but that’s only a portion of this account.

As for several of the negative letters I’ve read I believe they dealt with his move from Tennessee to Cal and the fact his teams have not advanced very far in the post-season.  As for me it’s been so long since Mizzou has played into March I’m easy, just get the team into the NCAA Tournament. Folks, don’t be so negative give Martin an opportunity before you determine there is a requirement to replace   Welcome aboard coach this Mizzou fan is excited.

I omitted him
Several weeks ago I wrote of athletes who became actors or entertainers.  I may have overlooked probably the most skilled of that era.  He played in the fledgling NBA with the Boston Celtics. Connors appeared in a single baseball game for the Dodgers but would play in 66 games for the Cubs.  Sometime later he was drafted by the NFL Chicago Bears but never suited up.  There you have it he played in the early NBA, for two major league baseball teams and an opportunity to play in the NFL.  He left the sports world for Hollywood and an acting career.  .

One more event, it was this athlete turned actor and not the Sixers Darryl Dawkins to first break a basketball backboard.  Connors accomplished this feat during warm-ups for a 1946 game. After the 6-6 Chuck Connors left for Hollywood he would become a supporting actor in a number of television and movie roles.  Connor’s only starring role was the lead in a television series familiar to generations “The Rifleman.”  This late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s series Connors was cast in the role of Lucas McCain a widower in the old west.  The television series is still in re-runs as this is being written in markets across the nation.  Connors died in 1971 of lung cancer and pneumonia.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Pronounce it correctly
I’m old skool in a sense; I’m use to pronouncing a word or term by checking how it’s spelled. This can sometimes be interpreted incorrectly and is not always the easiest method but sometimes it works.  As for Mizzou’s Cuonzo Martin I was incorrect in my pronunciation of his name. Phonetically speaking his name is pronounced CON-zoe.

Moved and replaced
Jimmy Buss attempted a power move and failed, despite failing he’s still gonna be paid. The brother remains part of the Laker trust he just has limited power now.  He is no longer a trustee having been replaced by sister Janie Buss.  The court agreed with the original trust stating; “Trustees are obligated to do everything in their power to ensure Jeanie Buss remains both the Lakers controlling owner and head of the Lakers board of directors for life.”  Now it’s all on Jeanie no excuses if the Lakers don’t win, we can no longer point at Jimmy.  The question how long before the team is competitive again with Jeanie leading the way assisted by the Magic/Pelinka tandem.

The countdown
Who is this years MVP you ask, mine is Mike D’Antoni Rockets coach.  The coach deserves credit for structuring an offense that’s allowed James Harden to expand and upgrade his game. We remember Harden the guy who never saw a shot he didn’t like.  They said the same thing about him once said of Kevin McHale, “He’s a black hole” the ball goes into him and you never see it again.  I was one of those who believed we’d seen the best of James Harden.  I was wrong, you were wrong and bunch of other basketball “experts” were wrong.

Last season the Rockets finished the regular season 41-41 and out of the playoffs.  This season they are 51-22 as this is written and the only teams ahead of them in the Western Conference are the Warriors and Spurs.  Many look at Russell Westbrook and the Thunder; I would pose the question is the Thunder better this season than last?  Before you answer I realize Kevin Durant was on the team last season but you’ve got to check a team’s won-loss record to determine who might be most valuable.  Co-MVP's as one party state it forget that, you win it alone or not at all.

Who would have figured?
Is your bracket similar to mine totally busted, we have a Final Four consisting of North Carolina, South Carolina, Gonzaga and Oregon.  Did any of you have any of those mentioned as your Final Four teams?  Okay maybe you had North Carolina and Gonzaga because both were seeded number one.  Unless you were a fan of South Carolina (7) or Oregon (3) you couldn’t have picked them.  South Carolina will be matched against Gonzaga and Oregon will face North Carolina.  I know this to be true about 40 miles west of here on I-70 there are a number of folks who will be rooting for an Oregon win.  One more note of interest two of the teams (Oregon & South Carolina) once coached at Kansas State.

Basketball from a fans perspective

March Sadness
This is going to surprising account, written by a Mizzou fan with no malice intended.  If you are Kansas basketball losing in the NCAA becomes more difficult.  Whatever your connection to the Lawrence school you know the history.  Kansas has dominated Big 12 basketball winning 13 consecutive conference championships.  Kansas is accustomed to winning basketball with the exception of the NCAA Tournament.  Bill Self is an accomplished coach his winning Kansas teams have allowed him the pick of the nation and world’s best talent.  The NCAA Tournament is a “one n done” you don’t play well you lose, I wonder sometimes about the Kansas faithful.

As a Mizzou fan I’m jealous, over the last three years I’ve seen the other side---losing.  Every year Kansas fans can expect and will witness 30 plus games.  I’m going to provide you an example of why I quit listening to sports talk radio local or national.  I tuned in Sunday morning to one of the two locals we have in Kansas City, I almost fell out of my chair with this statement. “Bill Self is pre-occupied with keeping the winning streak alive he’s not prepared for the
post-season.”  What an amazingly brainless statement by a guy who gets paid to talk sports on the radio.  An NCAA Championship certainly is a mark of success but not the only one.

A comparison
It appears Russell Westbrook will tie Oscar Robertson’s triple-double season, a comparison of the Cincinnati Royals and the Oklahoma City Thunder record is interesting.  This is incomplete being written before the completion of the current NBA season.  In 1961-62 the Royals finished the regular season 43-37 and were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Pistons.  It should be noted at that time the NBA season consisted of 80 games versus today’s 82.  As this is written the Thunder stand 41-31, the Thunder sit in 6th place in the Western Conference which ensures they make the playoffs.  Individual accolades aside where is your team positioned to win?

Paid his dues
Former Georgetown center and New York Knick Patrick Ewing has done it.  Ewing’s piled up frequent flier miles interviewing for every other NBA head coaching job it appeared.  John Thompson III was relieved of his duties after 13 years although he’d run a clean program he just didn’t win in recent years.  A discussion on ESPN focused on the fact the school believes in keeping hires “in house.”  Why not hire Ewing he checks the entire number of boxes.  He’s a former Georgetown player, he’s been known to participate in recruiting when possible while playing in the NBA and later as an assistant coach.  Whoever is in charge of hiring please consider Patrick Ewing.

Combo guard
Coach Luke Walton is making changes to the Laker lineup.  One of the changes involves a change at the point guard position.  Walton indicates (and I agree) D’Angelo Russell might be better suited as an off-guard rather than the point.  In my view I believe it’s not a talent issue rather a decision issue, last year I could understand his indecision.

As a rookie point guard this season it’s a far different matter.  I haven’t seen every game however it appears he’s a better shooter than decision maker.  This might prove the Lakers need to draft a true point guard, whether it’s Lonzo Ball at UCLA or Dennis Smith North Carolina State. If the choice becomes Washington’s Markelle Fultz that’s okay too however I believe he’s more a shoot-first point guard than the other two.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Division II
What is going on in Maryville (MO)?  Northwest Missouri State won the football championship last winter December 17 and now the school is playing for the Division II basketball championship.  The Bearcats faced Fairmont State located in Fairmount WV about 140 miles NW of Charleston.  Once again the residents of Maryville about 160 miles north of Kansas City are dancing.  The Bearcats win 71-61 and accomplish a rarity winning the football and basketball championships in the same season, the Bearcats finish 34-1.  Who beat them you ask, Missouri Southern Joplin won a game last month 88-71.  Congratulations to Coach Ben McCollum and team.

Bits n Pieces
The Suns Devin Booker had a game for the ages.  His team lost but he managed to score 70 points in a 130-120 loss.  Booker wasn’t just tossing up shots as his field goal percentage was a healthy .525, It’s too bad a classic game didn’t come with a win---oh well.

The Lakers reached back to the past on Friday.  The Lakers unveiled a statue of Shaquille O’Neal a key contributor to three championships.  Sorry haters Kobe attended the dedication and had kind words for Shaq.  At the same time The Big Aristotle made complimentary comments regarding Kobe, can you say “Bromance?”

Many of you unfamiliar with the landscape might not be able to locate Pittsburg on the map, not Pittsburgh that city is located in Pennsylvania.  The city without the h at the end is located in Kansas about 160 miles due south of Kansas City (MO).  Kim Anderson former Mizzou coach has been hired by Pittsburg State an NCAA Division II school.

38-year old Archie Miller is a rising star in the nations coaching ranks.  After several stops as an assistant he was hired at Dayton‘s head coach.  His teams earned NCAA berths the last four consecutive years.  Now the major challenge of his life as he’s accepted the head coaching position at Indiana.

Close the barn door
There’s an old adage that says; “It’s difficult to close the barn door after the cows have escaped. “ Simply stated I read it to detail how difficult it is to address an issue(s) after it’s grown to gigantic proportions.  That might be the case for AAU basketball in this country.  Truth is it’s actually better than it once was but the issues go far beyond the few words on this piece of paper.  Although elements have changed a good book to read is: “Sole Influence: Basketball, Corporate Greed and the Corruption of America’s Youth.”  The book was written by Dan Wetzel and Don Yaeger and was published in 2000.

As I stated after publication of the book steps were taken and many on the problems detailed no longer exist.  With that said there remain problems with AAU basketball, two former players Kobe Bryant and Steve Kerr have spoken on the evils of AAU basketball.  Kevin Garnett says AAU has killed the NBA ’These kids are not being taught anything.’   I’m unsure if Garnett’s words are totally correct however there is an issue with today’s athletes.  They are better conditioned due to an abundance of training equipment, have healthier diets and are less schooled in the fundamentals all due to AAU basketball.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Dominoes
He’s coming home, Michael Porter Jr. that is.  In the winter of 2017 the number one prospect in the Class of 2017 was signed, sealed and delivered to the University of Washington.  Look at the events, although Porter Jr. grew up in Columbia (MO) he was a Washington Huskie or so it seemed.  The school hired his dad as an assistant coach; Coach Lorenzo Romar is his godfather.
This might not be in order however the series of events that found Porter Jr. at Mizzou are like dominos.  Romar is fired by Washington; Porter Sr. no longer has a job.  Porter Jr. asks for his release from commitment, brother Jontay de-committed to Washington.  Cuonzo Martin is hired as head coach at Mizzou, Martin adds Porter Sr. to his coaching staff.

Late Friday afternoon word began circulating on the net Porter Jr. made up his mind---its official he’s headed back to Columbia (MO) home of Mizzou.  I saw a comment making light of Mizzou hiring Porter Sr.  allow me to go back in time.  Once upon a time Page High School in Greensboro (NC) had an All-American player, his dad a former ABA player had moved into the coaching ranks and would become an assistant on Larry Brown's staff at Kansas.

The coaches son completed high school at Lawrence High and enrolled at Kansas University becoming an All American.  Danny Manning would lead his team to the 1988 NCAA Championship, 50-year old Manning is head coach at Wake Forest.  Ed Manning would remain on the coaching staff after his son left for the NBA and remained on his staff at the time Brown would become head coach of the NBA Spurs.  Despite what you might believe this is not the first time a dad was hired as an inducement to recruit the son.

Subject to debate
This is going to create controversy and disagreement with several but here goes.  The two best centers in the NBA were drafted by the Kings, the two best centers in the NBA no longer play for the Kings.  The two best centers in the NBA were drafted in the same year (2010), one played at a basketball institution the other better know for football, give up?  HINT: The names are backwards.

sucramed snisuoc and nassah edisetihw

The last time
I’m not going to report the latest LaVar Ball statement the one that prompted this account.  I’m going to simply state I’m tired of reporting the insane comments he makes on a daily basis. ESPN is a co-conspirator always placing a microphone in front of his face.  I hope to be a man of my word, I will continue to report on Lonzo and the other brothers.  Going forward no more reports on the father of the brothers.

Who gets the job?
I believe the University of Indiana job belongs with the influential programs of the country. UCLA, Kentucky, Kansas and perhaps Arizona are in the mix of elite basketball programs across the nation.  Indiana needs a coach after terminating Tom Crean but who will it be?  After Brad Underwood bolted for Illinois after but one year at Oklahoma State we have no idea.  I always contend a number of youthful assistant coaches are striving to become head coaches however Indiana is not the job.  The school is in the same position of Mizzou in that an assistant would not be hired.

Would Indiana guy Brad Stevens return to the collegiate ranks for this position?  Stevens has made the transition to the NBA a success but he’s always appeared to be a guy more comfortable at the college level.  Sticking with the NBA how about Billy Donovan, the Thunder haven’t raised their level of play and he’s another coach I could see return to college.  I stated previously I cannot see Indiana guy Steve Alford returning to his roots, on the other hand Kansas State believed Bob Huggins would remain for “life.”  They had no idea the opportunity to coach his Alma mater would see Huggins leave for West Virginia.

On second thought….maybe
I laughed out loud awhile back; a mock draft site by a CBS.com writer had the Lakers drafting Tacko Fall late in the first round.  First of all there is no indication sophomore Fall is headed toward the NBA.  Secondly as I pointed out at the time the youngster is extremely raw however at 7-6 and 300 pounds do you take a risk on him for the future?  This account returns to a time Isiah Thomas was president of basketball for the Raptors he drafted a high school player.

Questioned at the time about the pick Thomas said; “We didn’t want to take a chance on missing out on a talent.”  The Lakers with a trade have the 27th pick in the first round; Fall is scoring 11 points and grabbing nearly 10 rebounds a game.  These are just average numbers but upward movement from his freshman year.  We must keep in mind despite Tacko is 21 years old he’s only been playing basketball for five years.

Basketball from a fans perspective

CORRECTION
I don’t like to make errors however I’m human; the lead story yesterday required correction.  I indicated a possible move of Wichita State and wrote “AAC“ that was incorrect it should have read the “ACC.”  It’s been corrected just in case you might have read the earlier account.

He’s gone
That list of high-profile programs I profiled in an earlier account we might include Georgetown to the list.  John Thompson III was fired on Thursday after 13 years at the helm.  As I indicated previously I believe III is a good coach who ran a clean program.  The downfall appeared to be recruiting, over the last few years fewer and fewer talented players headed to Georgetown. Georgetown will likely hire a name coach I cannot imagine someone’s assistant bumped up to head coach at this school.
.
Embrace the history
Kansas City one of the building blocks of jazz Charlie Parker, Big Joe Turner, Bennie Moten and Count Basie they and others spent time here perfecting their jazz styling’s.  The 18th and Vine Jazz District has experienced revitalization however consider no radio exists.  Not a single Kansas City Jazz radio station exists pathetic.  As for basketball that’s a different matter, the city has tried to embrace its rich basketball history.  Bet you didn’t realize Kansas City has served as host for 9 NCAA Championship Finals over time the most by any city in the nation.  At the time the National Association of Basketball Coaches were searching for a Hall of Fame site Kansas City won hands down.  In 2007 the College Basketball Experience opened; it contains numerous basketball exhibits plus a Hall of Fame.

The 80th NAIA Championship game was held on March 21, the championship for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has been held in Kansas City for all but 8 of those 80 years.  Most don’t know professional basketball was in Kansas City before the arrival of the Kings. The Kansas City Blues played in the “Professional Basketball League of America” 1947-48.  They only lasted that one year; George Mikan was a member of the Chicago Gear in the Basketball League of America validating its authenticity.

Several years later the Kansas City Steers would become a founding member of the short-lived American Basketball League (1961-1963) before the league folded.  Five players from the Steers were picked up by NBA teams once the ABL dissolved. In 1972 the Cincinnati Royals would move to Kansas City and be re-named the Kings.  Due to a lack of available dates in Kansas City a number of games were played in Omaha (NE).  The Kings would continue to play in both cities until 1975 when the Kings began playing all their games in Kansas City.  The Kings remained in Kansas City until 1985 when they were sold to Sacramento interests and moved to California. A number of minor league teams were active over the years but were not included in this account. Kansas City has a rich basketball history college and professional only a few acknowledge.

Bits n Pieces
A publication speculated there are possibly five NBA coaches who could be fired by seasons end. We can speculate all night and day, all five might be fired but suppose its only one?  I believe that one to be Bulls Coach Fred Hoiberg. I’ve always been suspect of college coaches moving into the NBA.  I’m still not sure about Billy Donovan although he appears safe for now.  Hoiberg tittering at the edge of the cliff is not so fortunate.  On paper it appeared the Bulls adding Dwayne Wade and others would contend for a playoff spot.  The Bulls could still make the playoffs but I’m not sure if Hoiberg would still remain safe.

Mizzou fans have no idea if Michael Porter Jr. is on the way, there is no indication younger brother Jontay Porter is on the way also.  As this is written we have no idea if Michael Porter Sr. will become part of Cuonzo Martin’s staff.  Those are three- no four questions we don’t have answers, little brother Coban Porter is still in high school so he becomes number four.

Jazz center Rudy Gobert is having a break-out year this 4th year of his NBA career.  I make this statement despite the fact his scoring average is a little over 13 ppg (13.5).  It’s the other areas of his game that have risen significantly this season.  The Frenchmen is shooting .657 from the floor, his rebound total is 12.8 and he’s the NBA shot block leader at 2.62 per game.

I can change my tune on an issue; I complained along with others regarding NBA teams “resting” players with no apparent injuries.  Gregg Popovich gave me some food for thought, he says “resting players might extend a players career 3 or 4 years.”  The NBA schedule is 82-games long however the playoffs are a different story.  We decide the NBA Champion about three weeks before our 4th of July holiday, the month of July is nearly the middle of summer.  So lets see we begin training camp in early fall play through the winter into spring.  We crown the NBA champion after the calendar says its summer.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Proposed movement
This is just rumor; the Wednesday edition of the KC Star contained a story reported earlier.  It was a proposed move of Wichita State from the Mo Valley to the ACC.  This is not the first time this move’s been reported however if it occurs the domino.  As for Wichita State geography plays no role if the move should occur it would be $$$$ and play in a basketball driven conference.  I’d like University of Missouri-Kansas City to petition the Missouri Valley to replace Wichita State if this move occurs.  I know we are past the days of geographical boundaries however this move is a natural fit.  Every team flies commercial in this day however check this out.

The furthest travel for UMKC would be to Indiana State or Evansville University and both are 6 hours travel by bus if necessary.  The other conference schools are located in Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois and Missouri.  I realize this argument might not be very convincing without applying $$$ to the proposal however it certainly should be a thought.  I’m sorry fans the WAC just don’t do it for this basketball fan, I’m not knocking Utah Valley, Grand Canyon or any other conference school but consider this fact.  The WAC is spread across three time zones, Midwest, Rocky Mountain and Pacific all the Mo Valley schools are in the same time zone.

“Steaks on a plane”
The credit card company that features actor Samuel L. Jackson adds Charles Barkley and Spike Lee to the cast every March.  The commercials I believe are intended to tie in with March Madness.  Those familiar with Jackson’s career remember his 2006 film “Snakes on a Plane.”  On a simulated airplane the opening scene.

Barkley:  “What are we eating”?
Jackson:  “Steak!”
Barkley:  “Where are we eating? “
Jackson:  “On a plane.”
Barkley:  “So what are we eating?
Jackson:  “Steaks on a plane”

Decisions, decisions
Paul George is a talent for the Pacers; George will be a free-agent this summer.  Numerous stories circulated about him prior to the trading deadline.  My first question does George command double-teams?  I’m returning to a comment made earlier this year by Kenny “The Jet” Smith during a TNT telecast.

Smith was discussing adding a player before the trading deadline however free-agency might be the singing the same tune.  Question two, George is a small forward the same position Brandon Ingram plays.  I have no idea the ceiling for Ingram but do you move a 19-year old budding talent for a right now quality player?  George is 6-9 but a slim 220 pounds, it would be extremely difficult to move him to power forward

March has been good
Laker forward Brandon Ingram is no longer a rookie, he’s at play in March.  There is little more than month left in the 2016-17 NBA season.  The skinny but talented forward had problems shooting and difficulty with play early on.  Why are Laker fans excited, his scoring average is only 9.0 points a game certainly not much.

Consider this fact March has been Ingram’s best month to date in the NBA, he’s at nearly 14 ppg while shooting .520 from the floor.  Contrast that with the 8 ppg and .344 from the floor he exhibited in November.  Of course it helps Ingram’s cause to be a permanent member of the starting cast, Laker fans can look forward to continued improved play next season.

Basketball from a fans perspective

NAIA Champion
Texas Wesleyan 29-7 (Fort Worth, TX) won the 80th Annual Division I NAIA Tournament Championship over Life University 26-11 (Marietta, GA) in Kansas City.  The final score read 86-76 as Texas Wesleyan won its second ever NAIA Championship.  Bet you didn’t get this score on SportsCenter?

He was the Bulls
Jerry Krause died Tuesday at age 77, you might not remember the name.  We must return to the Michael Jordan Bulls to know his name.  Krause was a lighting rod for controversy at times; he hired Phil Jackson as coach and drafted Scottie Pippen.  Krause traded for players who would become key contributors to the six NBA Championships.

As for the trouble portions of Krause’s tenure he was also responsible for breaking up the Bulls. He asks Phil Jackson to not return instead hiring Tim Floyd head coach at Iowa State.  That move was key to Jordan’s desire to retire.  Krause wasn’t exactly a novice his resume was extensive when he took over the direction of the Bulls.  R.I.P. Jerry Krause you will be remembered as the architect who built the Bulls.

2017 draft
Both of the mock draft sites I utilize have the Lakers choosing Lonzo Ball with the second pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.  As strange as it might sound I would be okay if my team chooses someone else.  I‘ll accept Ball if he’s the choice I really can’t do anything about it.  Maybe Ball can’t play at the NBA level, it might be extremely difficult dealing with Lonzo's over the top daddy.

Speaking of the draft
More and more the NBA Draft contains a number of Euro players some of whom we are unfamiliar with.  In most instances we little opportunity to see them in action but check mock draft sites.  In addition it should be noted a number of Euro and African players are on the roster of college teams, they are not listed in this account.  I’m forever reminded of the moaning and wailing by Stephen A. Smith when the Knicks drafted Kristaps Porzingis.  I’ve seen none of these players in action but believe if the NBA is willing to draft them they must have talent.

Frank Ntilikina 6-5 guard Strasbourg International
Rodions Kurucs 6-8 forward Barcelona 2
Anzejs Pasecniks 7-0 center Gran Canaria International
Jonathan Jeanne 7-2 power forwardf/center Nancy International
Jonah Bolden 6-10 power forward Radnicki Basket
Alpha Kaba 6-10 power forward Mega Vizura
Aleksandar Vezenkov small forward/power forward Barcelona International
Laurynas Birutis 7-1 center Zalgiris 2 International

The home country is not listed only their teams.  This is certainly not set in stone perhaps there are other players who might be taken ahead of the names mentioned above.

No more
Once upon a time I considered winning teams to reflect the strength of a conference but no more. The NCAA Tourney is a one n done series; if you don’t play well you are on the way home.  How can you say the Big 10 is superior to the Big 12 or ACC?  It might be good for an argument but there is no method to prove which conference is actually superior.  Truth is we could take this one step further and state the team winning the NCAA Championship might not be the best.

As example I continue to believe the 2015 Kentucky team was a more talented team than Wisconsin but I couldn’t prove it based on the NCAA winner.  In 1983 Houston’s Phi Slama Jami high flyers were dunk specialist.  Facing North Carolina State I’m sure no one believed limited talent NC State was capable of beating them.  In a relatively tight game an NC State air ball was rebounded by a NC State player and laid in the basket.  Jim Valvano’s crew beat Houston 54-52 for the championship that year.

In 1985 Georgetown was the defending NCAA Champion they had only lost two games (30-2) and faced Villanova (24-10) for the championship.  Few probably figured Villanova stood much of a chance against Patrick Ewing and company.  In a back and forth game Villanova managed to upset Georgetown 66-64.  Those are but a few of the NCAA Champions who were not expected to advance much past the field of 32.  The “best” team failed to win a championship on more than one occasion.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Free-throw shooting
Anytime the discussion of free-throw shooting occurs Rick Barry’s name always becomes part of the conversation.  Barry shot .8998 in the NBA; during his 4 years in the ABA it was .8798.  In 1978-79 season with the Rockets he shot .947 his highest percentage during his career.  Barry’s been invisible for awhile but he surfaced recently in a New York Life Insurance television commercial.

“New York Life is consistent as my free-throw shooting etc. etc.” as Barry discusses the advantage of during business with New York Life.  During the 31 second commercial Barry is shooting at the basket under underhanded, granny style.  Shooting free throws in this manner is unconventional however it works Barry is proof.

Hmmmm…….
The playoff bound Cavs rest their big three against the playoff bound Clippers on Saturday night. Clippers win 108-78 with LeBron, Irving and Love on the bench.  The three play on Sunday evening against the last place Lakers beating them 125-120. It was a back to back but still an interesting coaching decision, you "rest" players against a contending team.

Father no’s best
The above is intended to poke fun at the title of a ‘50’s television series titled Father Knows Best, which appears to not be LaVar Ball’s strong suit.  He’s shared almost as much on himself with the public as his three sons.  The elder Ball is a proud father and well he should be he’s got basketball talented sons he’s trained since they were youngsters.

Is the father placing too much pressure on his progeny?  As an example at this point in time it appears Lonzo is the only legitimate NBA prospect.  The middle and youngest brother have only proven their skill against high school opposition.  Stop talking about $ billion dollar shoe contracts and comparing your sons’ skill to that of Steph Curry, it reaches a point where it becomes strictly noise.

No do-over
We often wish to repeat something hoping for a better outcome.  Most times there is no such thing as a do-over.  The Sunday night topic on one of the local sports programs: “Did Mizzou and Kansas State miss the boat on hiring Brad Underwood? “  Is this a valid question, no one expected Underwood to bolt for Illinois after but one season on the job?  There is no doubt Underwood has proven to be a good coach over a short-period of time.  .

At Kansas State Bruce Weber has been under fire for years with the faithful despite mostly winning basketball.  Although they haven’t advanced very far K-State has play in the post season 3 out of the 5 years under Weber.  In addition he cannot beat arch rival Kansas which surely upsets a number of the schools fans.  As for Mizzou that’s a completely different story, Underwood never appeared to be in their coaching search.  As I stated above nobody (including Mizzou) probably believed Underwood was searching for another job.

She’s in a good place
Dr. Buss knew something about his sons’ Johnny and Jimmy that is just now becoming public four years after his death.  The brothers conspired to circumvent their sister and were likely attempting to sell their share in the team.    According to the trust Dr. Buss generated before his death he indicated a desire for Jeanie to run the team.  A 39-page trust written by him places his daughter clearly in the “drivers’ seat.”

I’m no legal expert just reading the opinions of attorneys familiar with trusts.  The following is just a line or two from the document.  *“The trustees shall take whatever actions are reasonably available to them to have Jeanie M. Buss appointed as the new Controlling Owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, Inc.”  We can only guess the brothers’ intention however they might have believed they could dissolve the trust

Basketball from a fans perspective

Game officials
I refrain from commenting on referee errors because it doesn’t change anything.  Some errors are more blatant than others that occurred in the game between Northwestern and Gonzaga.  It appeared to be a shot blocked at the basket by the Gonzaga player, it wasn’t.  The replay clearly indicted he blocked the shot by sticking his hand through the basket clear evidence of goal tending.  Northwestern goes home but with heads held high, would they have won the game less the officials’ error?  We can debate that for the next 20 years and come to vastly different conclusions.

“New” Madison Garden
The headline is a little misleading; a few weeks ago we covered the number of new arenas opened or under construction.  Madison Square Garden is the oldest arena (1968) in the NBA however the statement is a little misleading; the Garden has been renovated twice the last time in 2013.  If you’ve seen the classic scene from 1970 the tunnel area Knick captain Willis Reed emerged from no longer exists.  This is actually the fourth Madison Square Garden, the first arena opened in 1879, the second in 1890 and the previous building 1925.

Name any famous player of the past and they might have played in MSG.  Connie Hawkins, Walt Frazier, Dick Barnett and Bill Bradley are just a few of the who that have played at MSG in it‘s history.  There will be a new building built, in 2023 the lease for MSG will expire and the owners must begin the search for another site.  In the meantime the old renovated building will continue to serve as home base for the Knicks, NHL Rangers, the NIT and a host of college basketball games.

The importance of the draft
Don’t believe the NBA draft is important consider the last several NBA Champions.  The championship Warriors were essentially built through the draft.  Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymon Green all would become Warriors in this manner.  The Warriors made key additions through trades and free agency including Kevin Durant.  LeBron James was drafted by the Cavs along with Kyrie Irving and Tristan Thompson.

As for other key members of the Cavs they were acquired in trades or free agency.  The Spurs tasted success led by recently retired Tim Duncan whom they drafted.  Khawi Leonard, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker were all drafted by the Spurs.  They have also benefited from trades and free-agency.  The Heat can only point to Dwayne Wade a key draft pick, LeBron James and Chris Bosh arrived via free-agency.

‘Coaching musical chairs’
Whether Cuonzo Martin was to be terminated we don’t know.  In any event he left Cal for Mizzou, as for the others they were fired.  This is not in any order, Jim Ferry Duquesne, Derek Kellogg UMass, Mark Gottfried North Carolina State, Johnny Jones LSU, Lorenzo Romar Washington, Illinois John Groce and Indiana dumped Tom Crean after nine years.

There may have been coaches overlooked however you get the idea.  Those named are in the first wave of coaches to be shown the door.  The NBA approaches coaching replacement different.  In the NBA they attempt to have a coach in place by the June draft.  In college its always replace the coach as soon as possible.  The reason is simple the coach must begin the recruiting process as soon as possible.

The Palace
Its full name is the Palace at Auburn Hills but was mostly known as the Palace.  The home of the Pistons will close its doors in middle April forever.  The building opening in 1988 was really a palace and for a number of years opposing teams hated to play in the arena.  It was one of the larger arenas in the NBA seating nearly 25,000 Piston fans for games; they won three NBA Championships while the Palace was home.

Detroit was on the front of the jerseys however the building lies 35 miles from the downtown portion of Detroit.  It’s been mentioned the Pistons will move back to the city in the fall and will become co-tenants with Little Caesars Arena.  What happens to the Palace once the Pistons move; early it will be closed and demolished. The building holds another distinction it was built entirely with private funds $70 million dollars at the time

Basketball from a fans perspective

That was quick
He’s history after but one year, Brad Underwood has left Oklahoma State for Illinois.  After a sparkling record (89-14 .864) at Stephen F. Austin and three straight NCAA invites Underwood was hired by Oklahoma State to lead that program.  The basketball team led by the new coach finished the 2016-17 season with a 20-13 record and another NCAA trip.  Underwood is on the move again this time headed to Illinois replacing John Groce.

Okay…..really
Marc Stein of ESPN caused me to go WOW!  On Saturday he writes a story on several subjects my focus is the one written on Doc Rivers.  Stein indicates Rivers might return to Orlando one day in the role of general manager.  Coaching aside I wonder what’s led Stein to conclude Rivers would be successful in this role.  The difference between Rivers and Magic Johnson we have a body of work in front of us for Rivers we only have one man’s opinion on Magic.

As for Rivers coaching aside we’ve seen him operate as president of basketball operations. We guess that is signing free agents making trades and other player issues.  There are always circumstances those in the public sector might be unaware.  The Clippers could have cap space issues preventing them from signing a high profile free-agent.  I’m not going to cover trades I’m unsure in that area.  If the Magic desire to hire Rivers along with acquiring Blake Griffin or Chris Paul so be it.  I’m just unsure if we’ll see much difference, the Magic might just become the east coast version of the Clippers.

An unknown name
I admit Kevin Keatts was a name unknown to me; his was mentioned as Mizzou began its coaching search.  If you were already aware of Keatts you were 5 or 6 steps ahead of me however I know who he is now.  First serving as an assistant at Southwestern Michigan, Marshall and Louisville hired at UNC Wilmington in 2014 his teams finished the season 18-14, 25-8 and 29-6. Keatts first served as an assistant and later head coach at Hargrave Military Academy a prep school in Chatham (VA) on two separate occasions.

As for UNC Wilmington the last two seasons his team earned trips to the NCAA Tournament.  I was intrigued by his resume and believed he would be a potentially good hire should Mizzou chose him.  On Friday word came Keatts has been hired to replace Mark Gottfried at North Carolina State receiving a 6-year contract.  It’s tough coaching in the ACC facing Duke, North Carolina and Louisville however based on his past Keatts should be up to the task.

Most important jobs
A number of basketball jobs across the country are choice.  Coaches knock down one another attempting to be first in line at the AD’s office with their resume.  Okay I exaggerate a bit but you get the general idea.  The ‘elite’ basketball programs and not in any order are; Duke, North Carolina, UCLA, Kentucky, Kansas and Indiana.  Some might include Arizona in the count as well. Of those schools mentioned one is in need of a coach, Indiana fired Tom Crean after 9 seasons at the helm.

The names mentioned on ESPN to replace Crean have jobs; they are Steve Alford at UCLA, Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall and Dayton’s Archie Miller was among the names.  Alford is likely to remain in place having reached the coaching pinnacle now that he’s established at UCLA.  As for Marshall that could be different matter.  Marshall has spoken of ‘owning beach front property.’ There’s no reason he couldn’t have a second home in Florida if he took the Indiana job.  For Miller at Dayton it would be an upward bound move.

Basketball from a fans perspective

I can dream can’t I?
As this is written we have no idea if Michael Porter Jr. and younger brother Jontay are headed to Mizzou. Also on the radar with the coaching change might be 6-11 Jeremiah Tilmon.  Tilmon a 5-star Rivals prospect in the Class of 2017 committed and signed a letter of intent to Illinois last July.  Did I mention Tilmon is from East St. Louis (IL) home of Cuonzo Martin Mizzou coach?

It should also be of note Tilmon had shown interest in Mizzou while Kim Anderson was the coach, will change affect his decision to attend Illinois.  Michael Jr. has signed a letter of intent however brother Jontay has only given a verbal.  All three could choose to honor their commitment and all three could ask for a release, the coach who recruited them is not longer in place.  I’m a realist and certainly am not holding my breath on any of the three.

Bits n Pieces
Maybe 7-1 Moses Brown can help turn around the Georgetown program.  Brown is a 5-star Class of 2019 prospect from Queens (NY) and attends Archbishop Molloy.  Brown is on the radar for a number of schools however his dad would like to see him attend Georgetown.  His dad indicates Georgetown has a record of producing quality Big Men.

I dislike Laker co-owner Jim Buss for one reason alone, he appears to be one of those guys.  You know him; you work with him 5 or 6 days a week.  His cubicle is located next to yours or a short distance away.  If you work an assembly line job he’s next to you on the line or maybe he works in some other capacity I‘ve not mentioned.  This is the story he informs you and all within earshot how smart he is, often on a daily or hourly basis.  My statement to Buss and others is simple provide us evidence.

This makes sense although someone loses; the loser would be John Thompson III of Georgetown. The school has suffered over the last few seasons and word is III might be in trouble.  Dan Patrick suggested the name of Patrick Ewing.  Patrick is correct despite his desire to become a head coach no NBA appears willing to hire him.  Despite the passage of time Ewing and Iverson remain the best Georgetown ever produced on the court.

Immediate results
I did not expect immediate results from the Pelicans acquisition of Boogie Cousins.  Was there a belief the team would immediately take off with the change or simply another NBA story?  First point, due to Jrue Holiday’s absence and generally poor play the Pelican were playing less than spectacular basketball.  Anthony Davis was the one bright shining light, once Holiday’s wife health improved he was able to join the team and they played a little better.

Finally we must look at the question of ‘Big Man’ space, you have 6-11 270 pound Cousins trying to occupy a portion that was the domain of 6-11 253 pound Anthony Davis.  To me that is the greater problem two big men attempting to tailor their game to one another.  That’s the largest problem the two really require training camp to work with one another.  I realize Pelican fans expected more this season but not me I was looking at 2017-18 for real progress.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Which one, which one?
Laker General Manager Rob Pelinka will be involved but I believe Magic Johnson will have the final say.  The final say in who the Lakers should chose in the 2017 NBA Draft.  Unclear at this point if they have a top three pick in the first round, the 27 pick is guaranteed unless they trade it.  In the second round the Lakers are likely to have the 33rd pick.  Metta World Peace will be gone at the end of the season so another roster spot will open.  .

The ’elder’ statesman on the roster less MWP include Luol Deng (31), Swaggy P. (31) plus Timofey Mozgov and Cory Brewer age 30.  If the Lakers draft three players or even two a veteran presence is still required they cannot afford to cut everyone over 30.  My best guest Mozgov remains because of his contract and Brewer with his defensive presence.  That leaves Deng and Swaggy P. on the outside with the Lakers drafting a small forward and a point or shooting guard.

Bits n Pieces
University of Missouri-Kansas City won its first tournament game ever against Green Bay; UMKC playing in the CBI Tournament won their game 92-82.  The school moving from NAIA to Division I has never qualified for a post-season tournament until 2017.  Congratulations to Coach Kareem Richardson and his UMKC squad no matter how far they travel.  The coach has the team headed in a direction fans, the administration and alumni can be proud of.

I probably shouldn’t be writing on this matter.  Two motor mouths Charles Barkley and Lavar Ball might face off on the basketball court.  The other day Ball claimed ‘I could have beaten Michael Jordan.’  Barkley’s friend took exception and is suppose to have issued a challenge to Ball.  We are anxious to witness two fat guys huffing and puffing on the court.

Mizzou fans are wondering, Rivals 5-star prospect and Missouri native Michael Porter Jr. was headed to Washington.  Porter Jr. verbally committed and transferred to a Seattle school for his senior year.  His dad had been hired earlier as an assistant coach by Lorenzo Romar.  The dominoes began falling, Romar is terminated at the end of the season and Michael Porter Sr. likely has no job.  Question why should Jr. remain at a school that fired the coach who recruited him?

The first family (of broadcasters)
In this instance I’m not referring to the White House family it’s the Albert family.  You know them the eldest Marv has been a long-time NBA broadcaster for Turner Sports.  Prior to that he spent an incredible 37 years broadcasting Knicks basketball.  His younger brother Al broadcast Nets and Nuggets games, in addition during the time the NBA was on the USA Network Al was the voice for the national broadcast.

There is a third brother Steve has done play by play for a number of NBA teams and currently is the Suns broadcaster.  We are unsure of the other brothers however Marv has a son Kenny in the broadcast world too; he’s handled a number of sports including the NBA.  The salute to the Albert family the first family of sports broadcasting.

The fallout
Every time there is coaching change much turmoil is generated.  That’s what faces Mizzou basketball in the 2017-18 season.  As for those on the court Russell Woods is the lone senior on the team which could work in favor of Cuonzo Martin.  The downside of this issue the roster by October 2017 could look totally different from what we see currently.  How many of the 13 remaining players return--depends on Martin.

I believe there is a semblance of talent on the roster and depending on whom remains there might be building blocks.  Although he left under a cloud of suspension Frank Haith was able to retain most of Mike Anderson’s players.  This move certainly allowed Haith to begin his first season productively.  2017-18 will be a challenging season because a great deal of pressure will be placed on the shoulders of Martin.  I must believe he knew the challenge when he took the job.  I’m looking forward to Mizzou Arena becoming a ‘real’ home court again.

Basketball from a fans perspective

‘Tanking’
Tanking is a word I hate; the word has come into common usage surrounding the Sixer franchise.  I must admit the Lakers now fit there as well.  Placing veterans Timofey Mozgov and Luol Deng on the bench for the balance of the season is a clear indication.  It’s imperative the Lakers secure a top three pick and the only method to be sure is for them to lose and lose and lose.  The NBA attempted to address this issue in the past and the lottery was supposed to have been the ‘fix’ however it needs revision.  The 1983-84 season the Houston Rockets had Rookie of the Year Ralph Sampson in their lineup, despite this fact they finished 29-53.

Late in the season playing a game against the Kansas City Kings who were not much better the Rockets raced out to a double-digit lead.  Somewhere near the middle of the 3rd quarter they began pulling the starters.  The Kings would catch the Rockets on the scoreboard and would win the game ensuring the Rockets finishing with the worse record that season.  The first draft pick in the 1984 draft the Rockets chose 7 foot center Hakeem Olajuwon.  The tandem of 7-4 Sampson and 7-0 Olajuwon became an early twin tandem; the Rockets finished 48-34 losing in the playoffs.

He’s hired
This is not the story as originally written, prior to publication Cuonzo Martin was hired at Mizzou. A writer (not me) believes the ability to recruit in St. Louis might be overrated.  I’ve mentioned in the past how former football coach Norm Pinkel approached recruiting.  ‘Close the border’ was his mantra Missouri talent should not ‘escape’ past the state lines.  In this day of nation and world-wide recruiting is it that important?

All we need to do is check next door in the State of Kansas, there are three players on the roster the larger majority of their roster is from other parts of the nation and world.  St. Louis along with the Kansas City metro are large population bases with plenty of prep talent however all of it is not headed to Mizzou.  Winning programs, paths to the NBA for a smaller number are the keys to recruiting talent; facilities are likely at the bottom of a prospects list.

Early entry
I believe University of Washington point guard Markelle Fultz was the first underclassmen to declare for the 2017 NBA Draft. The second might be Marcus Keene the 5-9 point guard from Central Michigan, Keene led NCAA Division I programs in scoring in 2016-17 with 30.0 scoring average.  He became the first to score 30 or more points per game in the NCAA since the 1996-97 season.  Keene might look to the success of Isaiah Thomas of the Celtics and decide he can play at the NBA level too.

‘Fast Break: The Legendary John McLendon’
A friend of a friend filmed a documentary of John McLendon.  We’ve discussed the coach in the past however this film covered a number of aspects of his life I was not familiar.  As an example I guessed most black coaches in the 1950’s played at the NAIA level because that was their desire. Not true, McLendon petitioned the NCAA for inclusion but was denied.  Walter Byers then NCAA Commissioner believed the teams were not ‘good enough nor was the coaching.’ Coaching at Tennessee State with future NBA players Dick Barnett and John Barnhill his team won three consecutive NAIA Championships.

Along the way we discover he was a quiet champion of civil rights integrating the downtown hotels of Kansas City.  He was elected to the Naismith Hall of Fame as a contributor when he should have been voted in as a coach.  In 2016 the oversight was amended with McLendon added as a coach.  Earlier in 2006 McLendon had been elected to the College Basketball Hall of Fame. John McClendon a name that should be as hallowed as John Wooden, Adolph Rupp or Dean Smith. We now know him as a outstanding coach and champion of civil rights.  A DVD can be purchased, KCPT-TV 125 E 31St St, Kansas City MO 64108.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Foresight
I wish I’d been in a position to copyright a word or phrase.  As an example I’m unsure of the time frame ’March Madness’ came into common usage.  We hear it used over and over every year in March.  There are others after the Lakers won their third championship in a row Coach Pat Riley had the term ’3-peat’ copyrighted.  More recently Pelican forward Anthony Davis did the same with the word ’Uni-brow.’

I’m unsure of the legal ramifications however I believe it’s not necessary to originate the word or terminology just the first to copyright it.  As an example it’s my understanding Anthony Davis wasn’t the first one to use ‘Uni-brow’ however his legal team took out a copyright on it.  It’s too late to copyright ‘slam dunk’, ‘charity stripe’ or some other term connected with basketball we’ve likely heard most of our lives.

The Starters
If you are able to view NBA TV they have a program titled The Starters.  A bunch of ordinary guys who love the game but have not been active previously in media circles as far as I know.  Thanks to social network I have my own group, somebody poses a question and responses come pouring in.  I asked the question, “The Celtics have Isaiah Thomas at the point, they have a two three pick which could become Lonzo Ball or Markelle Fultz”

I asked the question if you are Danny Ainge who do your draft or maybe you trade the pick. One of The Starters went another direction instead choosing Jayson Tatum of Duke.  Most were divided between Ball and Fultz but even more interesting was the thought of another.  Rob said “Play Thomas like the Sixers did with A.I. he becomes the shooting guard and you draft Ball.”  Another believed Thomas not a true point guard requires a facilitator to the Celtics.

My favorite
Who do I favor for Mizzou’s next coach?  I mentioned several names the other day I believe might be on a potential list.  My concern they must hire a coach who already has established credentials they cannot be a work in progress.  As I indicated no up and coming assistant coach need apply this coach could hire him to eventually take over the program.  I’m going to omit Lorenzo Romar of Washington, he can recruit but his won-loss record concerns me.

Its likely SMU holds on to Tim Jankovic with both hands so he remains in Dallas.  Gregg Marshall turns out winning teams at Wichita State every season why does he need a school requiring rebuilding?  Tom Crean made some noise about remaining at Indiana but that might be a smoke screen. Cuonzo Martin made a similar statement Cal.  These two along with Steve Lavin, Seth Greenberg and Brad Underwood.  I don’t have a favorite I believe any one on the list would be a good hire.

They were ballers first
I thought this was worth a re-visit for those who might have missed it the first time.  A number of persons in the entertainment industry first distinguished themselves on the basketball court. George Clooney, Tom Selleck, and Brad Pitt just to name a few played basketball at the high school level.  A number were good enough to play at the collegiate level although entertainment in its various forms became their life’s work.  Bob Barker the long-time television host of ‘The Price is Right‘ attended Drury University in Springfield (MO) on a basketball scholarship.

Denzel Washington distinguished himself on the basketball court at Fordham but would acquire a degree in Drama and Journalism.  The late Michael Clarke Duncan stood 6-5; he played at an Illinois Community College and one year at Alcorn State.  Jim Caviezel has starred in a number of movies however his first starring role was on the basketball court.  He played at Bellevue College near Seattle (WA); an injury would end his NBA dreams.  We can add the name Mahershala Ali who played at St. Mary’s; an Oscar in 2017 for his role in ‘Moonlight.’ ESPN’s Jay Bilas was a basketball player at Duke but would distinguish himself in a low-budget 1990 Sci-Fi movie titled ‘I Come in Peace‘.
