Basketball from a fans perspective
I can dream can’t I?
As this is written we have no idea if Michael Porter Jr. and younger brother Jontay are headed to Mizzou. Also on the radar with the coaching change might be 6-11 Jeremiah Tilmon. Tilmon a 5-star Rivals prospect in the Class of 2017 committed and signed a letter of intent to Illinois last July. Did I mention Tilmon is from East St. Louis (IL) home of Cuonzo Martin Mizzou coach?
It should also be of note Tilmon had shown interest in Mizzou while Kim Anderson was the coach, will change affect his decision to attend Illinois. Michael Jr. has signed a letter of intent however brother Jontay has only given a verbal. All three could choose to honor their commitment and all three could ask for a release, the coach who recruited them is not longer in place. I’m a realist and certainly am not holding my breath on any of the three.
Bits n Pieces
Maybe 7-1 Moses Brown can help turn around the Georgetown program. Brown is a 5-star Class of 2019 prospect from Queens (NY) and attends Archbishop Molloy. Brown is on the radar for a number of schools however his dad would like to see him attend Georgetown. His dad indicates Georgetown has a record of producing quality Big Men.
I dislike Laker co-owner Jim Buss for one reason alone, he appears to be one of those guys. You know him; you work with him 5 or 6 days a week. His cubicle is located next to yours or a short distance away. If you work an assembly line job he’s next to you on the line or maybe he works in some other capacity I‘ve not mentioned. This is the story he informs you and all within earshot how smart he is, often on a daily or hourly basis. My statement to Buss and others is simple provide us evidence.
This makes sense although someone loses; the loser would be John Thompson III of Georgetown. The school has suffered over the last few seasons and word is III might be in trouble. Dan Patrick suggested the name of Patrick Ewing. Patrick is correct despite his desire to become a head coach no NBA appears willing to hire him. Despite the passage of time Ewing and Iverson remain the best Georgetown ever produced on the court.
Immediate results
I did not expect immediate results from the Pelicans acquisition of Boogie Cousins. Was there a belief the team would immediately take off with the change or simply another NBA story? First point, due to Jrue Holiday’s absence and generally poor play the Pelican were playing less than spectacular basketball. Anthony Davis was the one bright shining light, once Holiday’s wife health improved he was able to join the team and they played a little better.
Finally we must look at the question of ‘Big Man’ space, you have 6-11 270 pound Cousins trying to occupy a portion that was the domain of 6-11 253 pound Anthony Davis. To me that is the greater problem two big men attempting to tailor their game to one another. That’s the largest problem the two really require training camp to work with one another. I realize Pelican fans expected more this season but not me I was looking at 2017-18 for real progress.
