Basketball from a fans perspective
Wow
James Harden a.k.a. “The Beard” had a
monster game on Tuesday night. Playing
against the Magic Harden scored 60, that’s right 60 points along with 10
rebounds and 11 assists. Harden wasn’t
just chucking up shots from the floor, he was 19 for 30 (.633). He would lead the way to a 114-107 victory over the Magic. The Rockets single game record of 57 points was set by Calvin Murphy almost 40 years ago.
“When it rains it pours”
The adage certainly applies hear, my
definition says when things movie on the they get worst. That would be the Cavs as we enter February,
not playing at an elevated level and now a key injury. Kevin Love suffered a fractured left hand in
their game against the Pistons, its reported he’ll be lost to the team for 6-8
weeks. What occurs now, will some player step up to the task of replacing Love, we shall see.
Who’s in charge?
I’m sitting in the
kitchen eating dinner and my wife is watching a movie on the Hallmark
Channel. The female lead is giving the
youngsters on this hockey team all kinds of information only slightly related
to hockey. I ask my wife: “What’s going
on here?” She informed me the woman was
the sponsor of the team. I told my wife
“This is gonna make for a relevant story for Words eye view.” Over the
years we’ve witnessed numerous examples of terrible ownership in professional
sports…. the NBA is not exempt.
The problem I
believe is one of ego, the owner probably believes: “I built this business into
a billion-dollar industry I can do the same with my team.” Unfortunately, it’s much easier said than
done. I need look no further than my
favorite team the Lakers. After Dr. Buss
died Jim Buss became responsible for operating the team, the results are
clearly displayed for us today. Although
he’s certainly been less visible I believe that to be the case for Cavs owner
Dan Gilbert. Thank about it, these are two
examples that immediately come to mind there are probably others.
They love to hate you
According to Google
Maps the Duke and North Carolina campuses are located less than 15 miles from
each other. Playing in the ACC we could
see why there is a rivalry plus hatred toward the other school. As for many others it’s difficult to figure
out, we applaud success and Duke has certainly exhibited that on the basketball
court. Once one and done players began
arriving on campuses across the nation it was said; “Duke will never recruit
one and done players”.
Coach K. changed
with the direction of the tide always adapting and innovating.
“For all their
success on the court they have produced little NBA talent.” That might be true however where is it
written colleges are to act as farm systems for the NBA. Coach K. at nearly 71 years of age can still recruit
with the best of them, we need look no further than the incoming crop of
freshmen. The number one, two and three
best prospects in the nation. Coach K.
has given no indication he’s ready to retire so relax, you are going to hate
for quite a while.
Shoot ‘em
underhand
I’m a believer in no
excuses for poor free-throw shooting, in fact I agree with former NBA All-Pro
Rick Barry. He says ”There is no excuse
for anyone to shoot less than 80% from the line.” Kansas center Udoka Azubuike shoots close to
80% from the field, as for the free-throw line that’s a different story. Azubuike is down around 41% from the
free-throw line, he claims he’s considering shooting them underhand. This is certainly a throw-back to Rick Barry, check out the video below.
