Basketball from a fans perspective

Sometimes I’m guilty too
I hope I’m not being too negative at times in Words eye view, sometimes stories often cause a negative response.  I’m reading a story on Luka Doncic and I follow that by reading comments from other readers of the story.  The first response I pulled up the writer simply wrote ‘Darko Milicic’.  Of course, this was a reference to the highly touted 2nd pick in the 2003 NBA draft who simply wasn’t NBA ready.  The letter that followed it ask the question, ‘What does Milicic have to do with Doncic?  They literally have nothing in common.’
The writer of the second letter is correct, the two don’t play the same position the only theme that might remotely be common both come from Euro basketball. Of course, we know the basis for his cryptic message, he believes at least at this point Doncic is going to be a bust in the manner of Darko.  Unlike Stephen A. Smith and his Porzingis rant in 2015 we’ll never know the final story should Doncic play at the level many believe he’s capable of.  I’ll make the same statement once again, at least allow Doncic or anyone else to walk on to an NBA court before deciding they can’t play.

High school to the NBA
Anfernee Simons became the 24th pick in the first round of the 2018 NBA draft when he was chosen by the Blazers. Simons became the first American high school player drafted since 2005, his high school class graduated in 2017 and he’s already 19-years of age.  Who is Simons, he’s a 6-foot 4-inch 183-pound shooting guard from Altamonte Springs a city in metro Orlando (FL).
He attended high school at IMG Academy in Bradenton Florida.  Simons won’t move into the starting lineup, for the time being that job belongs to CJ McCollum.  Don’t set your expectation meter too high for Simons, Kobe Bryant didn’t move into the starting lineup until his third year.  The move from high school to the NBA is a ‘Grand Canyon’ leap so don’t expect instant success.

No more
I refuse to write anything more regarding LeBron James, Paul George or Kawhi Leonard.  There are far too many stories from far too many sources floating about.  You want to know how silly this entire affair has become?  On First Take Thursday morning Stephen A. Smith went on the air with this account.  ‘According to my sources LeBron James texted Kevin Durant’, he offered no more details other than dropping that bit of information.
My initial thought, why in the world would LeBron have to check with anyone other than his family on a proposed move?  Secondly why is he reaching out to KD?  KD had gone on record earlier indicating he was re-signing with the Warriors.  To top this off late Thursday evening we witnessed an interview on NBA TV, Joe Vardon writer for Cleveland.com claims no such text message occurred.  This free-agent frenzy has reached a point where it’s become ludicrous.

My list
A Mizzou fan compiled his list of the top five basketball players in history.  My list is compiled from players starting in 1960 and forward.  They are not in any order, but unlike the poll I saw I couldn’t stop at 5 my list contains 10 Mizzou players.
Anthony Peeler 1998-92
Willie Smith 1974-76
Steve Stipanovich 1979-83
Derrick Chievous 1984-1988
Kareem Rush 1999-02
Arthur Johnson 2001-04
Jon Sunvold 1980-83
Doug Smith 1988-91
Larry Drew 1977-80

Basketball from a fans perspective

I believe I’ve made myself clear on the subject
High school players should be allowed in the NBA draft again, I believe I’ve made myself clear on the subject.  The question might be why were they excluded in the first place?  We need look no further than Lenny Cooke, he might be the poster boy for why the NBA quit drafting high school players.  In 2001 Cooke was rated a superior prospect to a number of familiar names.   There was one guy from Akron Ohio named LeBron James and another from New York City by the name of Carmelo Anthony, a third was Amar’e Stoudemire.  The condensed version of the story at age 19 Cooke was no longer eligible for New Jersey High school sports.
Cooke attempted to enroll in college but was convinced by folks around him he’d be better off in the NBA.  He submitted his name for the 2002 NBA draft but never heard his name announced.  Over the next several years he would play for a number of minor league basketball teams but that call from the NBA never came.  The 6-foot 6-inch Cooke is only 36-years old now, but a blown Achilles tendon 11 years ago ended his basketball career.  An outstanding basketball player whose academic record plus bogus advice from family and friends were keys to him never fulfilling the 2001 expectations.  In 2005 the NBA changed the rule and high school athletes were no longer eligible for the draft.
‘Mama there goes that man’
I’m borrowing the classic phrase from Mark Jackson former player and coach.  An analyst for ESPN/ABC at some point during a telecast he almost always utters the phrase.  This is not a ‘I hate LeBron’ speech just offering an opinion.  No argument from me, LeBron James had an outstanding season 15, for those who voice an opinion James Harden didn’t deserve MVP honors check this out.  Before we begin this, we must acknowledge the fact basketball is not a one-person sport, at the same time the numbers speak for themselves.
The Rockets finished the regular season 65-17, the Cavs were 50-32.  The Rockets were in first place in the tough Western Division the Cavs finished fourth in the Eastern Conference.  The only blemish for the Rockets was losing the Western Conference championship to the Warriors.  There is no disagreement on my part LeBron pushed, pulled and even supported as he led the way for this version of the Cavs.  We can say ‘what if’’ a pulled hammy might have kept the Rockets from playing for an NBA championship.
This is ‘real’ news
Allow me to clarify the headline, this story is no more news than a few others.  It’s just the fact the news from Oklahoma City by Paul George is huge, for weeks we heard Paul George was ‘re-signing’ with the Thunder.  He still does the deed however he is opting out becoming a free-agent July 1, does he sign with the Lakers?  There is no indication this might be the case, but here is the most interesting portion of the report to me.  Why opt out if he intends to remain in Oklahoma City?  The next week or so should prove quite interesting.
NBA owner
Dwyane Wade is not retired but he is looking toward the future, he’s given us an indication he eventually wants to become an NBA owner.  Wade says he desires to be part of a Seattle ownership group.  Wade indicates he doesn’t have the financial clout to own a team, so he would be a minor owner.  Grant Hill and Michael Jordan were cited by Wade as former players who are now owners.  Hill is a part-owner of the Hawks and is Jordan principal owner of the Hornets.  Two takeaways, it would be great to see Wade as an NBA owner and Seattle in the league again.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Debate is concluded
Ben Simmons of the Sixers is 2018 NBA Rookie of the Year, the debate is concluded.  A segment of fans and many in the media believed the award belonged to Donovan Mitchell of the Jazz.  Their argument, Simmons was drafted in 2016 but an injury caused him to miss 2016-17.  Mitchell was a 2017 choice by the Jazz and had an outstanding season too.  I’ve always been on the side of Simmons not because he’s necessarily the best but the rules.  They say nothing about the year a player is drafted they state the season a player begins play.  Let’s travel way back, Jerry Lucas was drafted by the Cincinnati Royals in 1962 but did not play until 1963.

The defunct American Basketball League Cleveland Pipers signed Lucas to a contract forcing him to miss the 1962-63 season. The ABL would fold and the next season Lucas began play in the NBA and was named 1964 Rookie of the Year for the Royals.  We move forward to 1987, former Spurs center David Robinson was drafted that year in but due to his military commitment didn’t arrive in the NBA until 1989 he too would be named Rookie of the Year.  How about an international player, Pau Gasol played for FC Barcelona from 1998-2001 yet won Rookie of the Year for the Grizzlies in 2001.  Piston forward Blake Griffin broke his left knee cap and missed the 2009-10 season…. Griffin was NBA Rookie of the Year in 2011.  I didn’t research any further, if you believe Mitchell had a superior season that’s okay but don’t use the year Simmons was drafted to validate your argument.
‘This is the end my friend’
This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend
The end
You might recognize the chorus from ‘The End’, the 1967 rock classic by Jim Morrison and the Doors.  I’m taking liberty and applying it to the break-up of Doc and Austin Rivers from the Clippers.  Young Rivers has been traded to the Wizards in exchange for center Marcin Gortat.  In addition to the break-up of the Rivers clan this move signals the future departure of DeAndre Jordan, no requirement for two starting centers.  Doc Rivers is no longer involved in player decisions this move must have been initiated by Jerry West and maybe owner Steve Ballmer.
Who needs free-agency, this is news because it breaks up one of the most blatant examples of nepotism in the NBA.  I know you say I’m being too critical of the Rivers family that is not the case.  My kids are special because they are part of me, I’d help them in any manner I could short of providing them employment.  Allow a further explanation, Doc Rivers is an employee he’s not the owner.  His son was hired by him but is paid by Donald Sterling previously and later Steve Ballmer.  At the time Austin became a free-agent nobody entertained signing him, what does the former director of player personnel Doc Rivers do…. he hires Austin.
Home run, dunk or catching passes
On more than one occasion we’ve covered those multi-star athletes.  That’s the case here, Yankee Giancarlo Stanton crushes home runs but it just as easily could have been dunks or catching a pass thrown to him.  Playing at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks (CA) the 6-foot 6-inch Stanton averaged 19.7 points and 13.5 rebounds a game while on the basketball court.
In football he was a wide receiver and corner back, he was good enough to draw attention from Southern Cal.  Almost comical now he claims, ‘Baseball was my third favorite sport’, he said that giving us no indication if he favored football over basketball or vice versa.  Stanton probably found little down time between seasons, football to basketball and then baseball.  No need of locating his high school baseball numbers because that’s the sport he plays professionally.

Maybe the criticism wasn’t warranted
Kim Anderson was fired after three seasons at Mizzou.  His numbers, 27-68 (.284) the record was even worst in SEC play 8-46 (.148).  I certainly expected much better and so did Mizzou Nation, his track record at the University of Central Missouri was outstanding 274-94 (.745), in the MIAA Conference it was 158-67 (.702).  His team won the NCAA Division II championship in 2014 all the numbers said winner except he wasn’t.  Anderson landed on his feet after his firing at Mizzou, Pittsburg State (KS) hired Anderson and he walked in and led the team to a 17-13 overall and 9-10 in the MIAA.  The previous year the school finished 5-22 with a 3-16 record in the conference.  The Anderson factor at work which might prove there is a difference coaching Division II basketball over Division I.
It’s not the NBA’s fault
There has been ample opportunity in the past to offer criticism of the NBA.  My first thought former commissioner David Stern voiding the trade that would have sent Chris Paul to the Lakers.  The action by the NBA which own the New Orleans franchise at the time remains an ‘itch I can’t scratch’ as a Lakers fan.  Monday evening Dwane Casey was named NBA coach of the year.
Tuesday morning I heard a member of the media claim, ‘It’s an embarrassment to the NBA Dwane Casey named coach of the year and he’s fired.’  I would be the first one to admit this is not a usual circumstance, an embarrassment…. no way.  In the Chris Paul trade (and you might think of another instance) the NBA was directly involved in the issue.  This is totally different, Toronto management chose for whatever reason to fire Casey, the embarrassment lies strictly with the Raptors and not the NBA.
What might have been
The photo on ESPN’s NBA page Monday evening was quite significant.  If you didn’t see the photo Kevin Durant was on the left side of the frame, James Harden in the middle and Russell Westbrook on the right side.  On Tuesday morning a different photo was displayed but it too contained all three of them.  Durant, Harden and Westbrook in Thunder jerseys, my how time has brought about a change.
Durant has been NBA Finals MVP twice in a Warriors jersey, Monday evening Harden was named regular season MVP.  We cannot overlook the fact Westbrook was NBA MVP in 2017.  Three MVP’s but only Westbrook remains a member of the Thunder.  Harden Sixth Man of the Year in 2011-12 likely wanted starter minutes, he would be traded to the Rockets after the season, in 2016 Durant ‘walked away’ signing a 2-year free-agent contract with the Warriors.
Tough work proved key
Landry Shamet arrived on the Wichita State campus not highly touted.  It wasn’t the fact this Kansas City native couldn’t play the game he had to work harder to out tough and outperform those in front of him.  It didn’t help his caused, he was red shirted his freshman year due to injury.  This setback must have caused him to work even harder eventually he would become the starting guard for the Shockers.  On June 21 the Sixers made Shamet the 25th pick in the first round.  As a late first round draft pick there is no guarantee he earns a roster spot, based on his past I certainly wouldn’t be comfortable saying he ain't making it.  He’s got two advantages, he’s 6 feet 5 inches tall and his work ethic.  A shout out to Park Hill High School where Shamet honed a portion of his basketball skill.

Basketball from a fans perspective

“We missed your best”
Julius “Dr J” Erving was discussing his career but took time to mention Connie Hawkins.  The Hawk as he was nicknamed died at age 75 in October 2017.  I titled this “We missed your best” for a series of unfortunate events in his life.  He emerged from Boys High School in the Bed-Sty portion of Brooklyn and headed for the University of Iowa in 1960.  He’d come out of New York City one of the most celebrated basketball players of that era.  Then the roof caved in, Jack Molinas a good basketball player in his day might have been a better gambler.  Molinas and others were involved in a point-shaving scandal with several players, Hawkins name was mentioned in the investigation.
Attorneys would later prove Hawkins never shaved a single point but was simply an acquaintance of Molinas, his guilt, Hawkins had taken a loan from Molinas.  When the news broke of the scandal his scholarship at Iowa was revoked and he left during his freshman year and later in the 1964 NBA draft he was given a life-time ban.  The 6-foot 8-inch Hawkins would not soar in the NBA as he hoped, he along with others began play in the fledgling American Basketball League, the league only lasted 1 and ½ years before folding.  He then became a member of the Harlem Globetrotters from 1963-1967, in 1967 Hawkins began play in a new league the American Basketball Association not to be confused with the ABL much earlier.
Hawkins continued to demonstrate his skill on the basketball court in the ABA but then a change occurred of monumental proportions.  Two attorneys took up his case and decided to sue the NBA for banning Hawkins in 1964.  The NBA decided it couldn’t win the case and settled by paying him $1.3 million, the Suns won a coin flip with the Sonics for his NBA rights.  From 1969-1976 the nation was witness to the abundant skill and athleticism of the Hawk, he was Dr. J. before there was a doctor.  Playing in the ABA with little national television coverage we didn’t see much of him the years between 1964-1969.  Hawk’s NBA numbers look rather ordinary and fail to provide us proof of his greatness.  I’m sure in his heart of hearts he was bitter at times but never publicly expressed his displeasure with the NBA ban.  In several ways we can truly say of Hawkins, “We missed your best.”
M.I.A.
The Nuggets Michael Porter Jr. will skip NBA Summer League play, he’s not the only rookie.  Luka Doncic of the Mavs will also be missing in action too.  Porter’s case might be due to his back surgery last winter as for Doncic the dude just might be plain tired.  He’s played an extended busy schedule this season, in fact the initial news we received indicated Doncic wouldn’t be attending the NBA draft at all.  Late Wednesday we learned he was flying into New York and would be present that evening.  Doncic was all smiles at the time commissioner Silver announced his name as the 3rd pick in the first round by the Hawks.  Later in the evening his draft rights were traded to the Mavs for the draft rights to Trae Young.
I doubt it
Oklahoma’s roster listed Trae Young at 6 feet 2 inches in height and 180 pounds.  The first figure is probably correct as for the weight issue I seriously doubt that.  Hopefully the Hawks are not expecting him ready to lead the team.  Despite being a lottery pick there are a number in the media that doubt his ability to move to the next level.  They focus on his dwindling scoring and assist numbers toward the end of the season.  A number in the media have decided he’s not that talented.  I’ve yet to read or hear an NBA scout or coach claim Young can’t play.

In fact, one analyst predicted Young would have a good NBA career.  He stated, “They won’t be able to throw all those junk defenses at him like they do in college.”  I continue to be amazed by some of the comments I read, this one about Luka Doncic but it just as easily could have been Young.  The question what position he would play, the response “Point bench.”  I’m unsure of your view but how do you make that type of assessment regarding a player prior to stepping on to an NBA court.  Perhaps we’ll find out Doncic and Young can’t play at the NBA level but doggoned give ‘em a chance to prove they can't

He turned down the NBA
Peewee Kirkland was making so much money selling drugs he turned down an opportunity to play in the NBA.  Keep in mind this was 1969 and he was drafted by the Bulls he said; “Thanks but no thanks.”   The 6-foot 1-inch Kirkland was reported to be the first player ever to do a 360 degree turn on a move to the basket.  Kirkland was a Harlem (NY) legend, after high school he attended Kittrell College a 2-year black college (now closed) in North Carolina where he averaged 41 points a game.  Kirkland would later attend Norfolk State along with former Bucks and Bullets forward Bob Dandridge.  Kirkland teamed with Dandridge to lead the Spartans to a 25-2 record and 21-4 the following season, both times the team lost the NCAA Division II championship.

He would be caught convicted and sent to prison in 1971, later he served time from 1981 to 1988 both times in Federal Correctional facilities.  From all indications Kirkland was never an abuser of drugs he was a dealer who enjoyed the life style and fame drug dealing brought him.  Peewee is still with us, at age 73 he’s become a motivational speaker and travels the country speaking of life decisions in talking to youth groups throughout the country regarding the right path in life.  I’ve never read or heard him regret he failed to play in the NBA.  So, there you have the shorten version the life story of Peewee Kirkland, a guy who turned down an opportunity to play in the NBA not because he wasn’t talented enough.

Basketball from a fans perspective

It’s MPJ’s fault
Commissioner Adam Silver announced Kevin Knox as the Knicks choice and a hearty round of boos was heard throughout Barclays arena.  The Kentucky forward was the 9th pick and Michael Porter Jr. remained available was the chief reason.  In any event Kristaps Porzingis could commiserate with Knox, he is reported to have asked Knox about his reception.  ‘Draft night boos are fuel to the fire,’ in other words your actions on the court will more than make up for the negative reaction of a few.

Jayhawks in the NBA
The Cavs announced power forward Billy Preston will play for their summer league team.  Preston didn’t play but left school prior to the season due to academic issues.  He might be added to their regular season roster.  Point guard Devonte Graham became the 34th pick by the Hawks and his rights were later traded to the Hornets.  Shooting guard Svi Mykhailiuk was picked by the Lakers with the 47th pick and teammate Malik Newman a guard was undrafted but signed a 2-way contract with the Lakers.

Kyrie on the move?
A rumor is circulating Kyrie Irving could be leaving the Celtics for the Knicks.  Irving will become a free-agent in July 2019 unless he signs a new contract.  Relax Celtic Nation that might not be as bad as it might first appear.  I said, (me) when Irving went out with the injury “This team is going no place although they make the playoffs.”  Terry Rozier must have heard my comment from Kansas City, he said “You didn’t say that did you?”

Rozier not only was an adequate replacement for Irving he proved to all he’s ready to play starter minutes as a regular.  Don’t get me wrong Irving is a talented player but given the opportunity in a pressure packed playoff atmosphere Rozier certainly rose to the occasion.  The Celtics possibly in fear of losing Irving with no compensation might be forced to trade Irving, they might make a move prior to the 2018-19 season.  Pure speculation on my part, Irving signs an extension and this account is stowed away never to see the light of day.

Did you notice
The Lakers passed on LiAngelo Ball but so did 29 other NBA teams?  I’m going to toss more gasoline on the fire, the Lakers announced he will not be added to their summer league roster.  Some might believe I’m poking fun at the young man that is not the intent.  This is aimed at father LaVar who cannot seem to zip his lip for more than a few minutes at a time.  My wish is success for him Lonzo and LaMelo however daddy is making it extremely challenging.  He cannot shut up long enough to listen to anyone but himself.  Do what you do LaVar, market your shoes and get your league off the ground.  Don’t allow the Lakers or any NBA team to abuse your offspring but don't get in their way.

An exceptional circumstance
It’s not uncommon for high school athletes to play more than one sport.  What is extremely unusual is to be an outstanding athlete in two sports.  That’s the case for Class of 2020 prospect Jalen Suggs, he plays quarterback for Minnehaha Academy and point guard for the basketball team in Minneapolis Minnesota.  The 6-foot 3-inch Suggs is a Rivals 4-star prospect in football and 5-star prospect in basketball.  This soon to be junior has made no decision regarding a sport or college.  Just for your information Mizzou quarterback Drew Lock played basketball at Lees Summit (MO) but the 6 foot 4-inch Lock chose football over basketball.

Basketball from a fans perspective

I’ll take their word
I’m unsure If I mentioned this on my social media platform or Words eye view.  I’m going to mention it again, I will take the word of almost anyone associated directly with the game over a number in the media.  Players, former players, coaches and general managers are always going to be given consideration by me over the media.  These folks often have insight into the game members of the media and fans sometimes lack.

With the disclaimer out front allow me to proceed to the subject at hand.  Laker pick Mo Wagner has been ‘beat-up’ by a few fans and media members.  He’s slow afoot or he’s not good at rebounding the ball’ are just a few of the statements I read and heard since Thursday night.  GM Rob Plenika said, *“Kyle Kuzma and Josh Hart were actually at Moe Wagner’s workout, and both of them were elbowing Earvin and I, saying, ‘Man, this guy would be fun to play with. He plays with energy, he’s light on his feet,'” Pelinka said after the Draft concluded.

*Lakers Nation

MPJ update
The Nuggets have indicated Michael Porter Jr. will not play on their summer league team.  We are also hearing reports the Nuggets might shut him down for 2018-19 allowing his back to fully heal.  I’m sure there are many in Mizzou or Sixer Nation that might not be pleased if this move should occur, but I say why not.  After witnessing the return of Embiid and Simmons I’m okay if the Nugget medical staff determines this is the best move.

We don’t know
Kawhi Leonard is a quiet All-Star, 98% of the time he allows his play on the court to speak for itself he rarely provides any clues on his thoughts or view.  The 2% says ‘I want out of San Antonio’, do the Spurs want to trade him is the next question.  During the season a few players including Tony Parker met with Kawhi to discuss when he was returning to the lineup…. nothing came of the meeting.  Recently coach Pop flew to Los Angeles in a face to face meeting, again nothing came of the meeting that could be considered progress.  More recently former Spurs player turned broadcaster Bruce Bowen publicly blasted Kawhi.

Bowen was expressing his view of the situation however I seriously doubt his statement causes Kawhi to move 1 centimeter.  It’s also been reported the Lakers contacted the Spurs in hopes of discussing a trade…again the word from the Spurs was ‘Thanks but no thanks, were not trading Kawhi.  As pointed out earlier he’s a restricted free-agent so he cannot simply sign with another team July 1, the Spurs could trade him to a team other than the Lakers but that fails to resolve the issue.  It’s reported Kawhi is only interested in Los Angeles, he would become a one-year rent a player in another location.  Would you trade for a player no matter his value if you knew he would eventually leave?

Different from dad
Nobody would mistake Shareef O’Neal for his famous dad Shaquille, he's 6 feet 10 inches versus the 7-foot 1-inch dad.  Shareef is a svelte 205 pounds, his dad at the end of his NBA career 350 pounds.  Shareet is a forward while dad Shaquille played the center position throughout his basketball livelihood.  There are other differences between father and son too, Shareef gravitated toward basketball much later than his dad.

The major scouting sites apart from one awarded Shareef 5-stars so that should provide us they believe he’s got talent.  Shareef committed to Arizona early however the turmoil surrounding the program last fall caused him to change his mind.  In late February 2018 he decided to remain home and play for Steve Alford at UCLA.  Shareef is listed as a power forward and might not have finished his growth spurt or weight addition for that matter.  Video indicates he’s got skill on the basketball court whether that translates to success at the next level is he to be determined.

Basketball from a fans perspective

My Lakers
You might remember (or check the earlier addition) I provided 8 names I believed the Lakers would likely make the 25th pick.  One of those names was Mo Wagner from Michigan.  Only witnessed him play twice so I can say very little regarding the pick.  The number 39 pick  became Isaac Bonga a 6-foot 10-inch point guard from Germany, he was a mystery having never heard of him until his name was announced draft night.

As for Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk that was slightly different the 6-foot 8-inch guard played at Kansas. I witnessed Svi play on several occasions over his 4-years in Lawrence.  The Lakers certainly have an international roster with Wagner and Bonga from Germany and Mykhailiuk from Ukraine.  As for Bonga it’s reported he will likely remain in Europe for the foreseeable future.  The Lakers were not finished, they signed free-agents Malik Newman from Kansas and Joel Berry North Carolina to 2-way contracts, both are expected to play the point.

Draft notes
I informed several people I was surprised Michael Porter Jr. dropped so far.  At 14 he’s still a lottery pick however many thought he’d be drafted somewhere between 4 and 8.  The back-spasm issue sure affected his stock, if he’s healthy I maintain the Nuggets got a real quality talented athlete.

You might have heard this announced.  DeAndre Ayton and Marvin Bagley III were high school teammates for one year.  Ayton chose Arizona while Bagley enrolled at Duke and they were chosen back to back in the draft, Ayton number one and Bagley number two.

The Yahoo headline jumped off the page, “Atlanta taking huge risk on the ‘next Steph Curry.  I didn’t bother with reading the story because I considered it stupid.  Give Trae Young and others an opportunity to play.  Red flags likely exist on a number of these rookies, how can we determine they are not NBA ready prior to seeing them in action.  That's the only method to determine if they are a bust.

Villanova’s Donte DiVincenzo strong play in the NCAA championship game plus the NBA Draft Combine.  The result he would become the 17th pick in the first round by the Bucks, a guy who was on NOBODIES radar prior to the start of the collegiate season.

It must be a New York thing, at the time the name Kevin Knox was announced Knicks fans begin booing loudly.  This was a repeat of 2015 when Kristaps Porzingis was chosen.  Even funnier the television camera located the booing Porzingis kid on Thursday from that draft.  He was not impressed with this pick either, by the way a later interview he was sporting a Porzingis jersey.

I can’t wait until the NBA schedule is available, it appears war has already been declared.  It must be clear Joel Embiid took exception to DeAndre Ayton’s comparison to his game. This is the tweet he sent out draft night.

Don’t compare Ayton to me either... I play DEFENSE

Wow
Puma is making noise again, in addition to hiring entertainer Jay-Z as president of basketball operations they continue to sign incoming NBA talent.  The latest prospect to sign with Puma is Michael Porter Jr.  This signing becomes the 4th collegiate player they signed since returning to the “shoe wars.”  In addition to MPJ also in the fold are DeAndre Ayton, Zhaire Smith and Marvin Bagley III.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Draft night
All the hype is over, commissioner Adam Silver is standing at the podium with a “State of the NBA address”.  The Suns are up first and this focus is on the Top 10 and in order of selection.
Suns-DeAndre Ayton
Kings-Marvin Bagley III
Hawks-Luka Doncic (rights traded to the Mavs)
Grizzlies-Jaren Jackson Jr.
Mavs-Trae Young (rights traded to the Hawks)
Magic-Mohamed Bamba
Bulls-Wendell Carter Jr.
Cavs-Collin Sexton
Knicks-Kevin Knox
Sixers-Mikal Bridges
Michael Porter Jr fell out of the Top 10, I wonder how much the back spasm issue might have impacted teams 8 through 10?
Peer into the future
We have no method to determine injuries, an example might be Grant Hill.  Hill had a 19-year NBA career which is certainly admirable, a series of injuries curtailed what might have led to the Naismith Hall of Fame.  In 2017 the NBA Draft much of the talk generated around two-point guards, who would be drafted first Lonzo Ball or Markelle Fultz.  Fultz ended up being the top pick by the Sixers and was followed by the Lakers choosing Ball.   From that point on the two went in opposite directions, Fultz suffering a shoulder injury miss much of his rookie season.  On the west coast Ball had an up and down rookie year, sometimes looking great and on other occasions a deer in the headlights look.
As we approach the 2018-19 season baring injuries what does the future hold, will Fultz outshine Ball or vice versa?  At this point it might be a difficult call to make, Fultz late in the season appeared to have overcome his shoulder/shooting issue.  Currently he’s playing behind Rookie of the Year Ben Simmons at the point, his future might not be with the Sixers.  As for the Lakers Ball will improve in fact of the three brothers he’s the best and will continue to hold that distinction for quite a while.  He too could wind up being traded although Fultz is more likely to suffer that fate.  Based on what I’ve witnessed to date we have a draw, come back and see me in 5 years to make a more creditable judgement.
He kept the faith
Unless you are part of Mizzou Nation Kevin Puryear is a name unfamiliar to you.  Kevin’s a local kid who graduated from Blue Springs South High School and headed off to Mizzou.  He averaged nearly 12 points a game his freshman and sophomore year certainly adequate numbers.  The problem Mizzou was terrible although Puryear proved he was a quality Division I athlete.

A funny thing occurred his junior season, his scoring average dropped.  We’d automatically assume Puryear had a down year, not so in my view.  Puryear made the adjustment to a new coach (Martin) and new offense and didn’t miss a beat.  The 6-foot 7-inch 236-pound power forward continued to play tough hard-nose basketball.  There is no indication of an NBA future but whether its Euro basketball or Sports Management (his major) success is clearly in his future.

The admiral
He really wasn’t an admiral, David Robinson was a Lieutenant Junior Grade at the time he left the Navy for the Spurs of the NBA.  This is not surprising because it might be difficult for a 7-foot 1-inch officer to operate as a line officer in the Navy.  As for the growth spurt Robinson stood 6 feet 8 inches at the time he entered the Naval Academy at Annapolis.  He was over the height limit of 6-feet 6-inches and required a waiver.  In college and the NBA, you name the honor its likely Robinson has even won it or been honored with an award.

College and FIBA Hall of Fame, he won Olympic Gold twice and Bronze once.  This two-time NBA champion was the league’s MVP and a perennial NBA All Star, in addition he was selected a member of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary Team.  Robinson would go on to spend his entire NBA career as a member of the Spurs from 1983-2003.  Every time a discussion of all-time greats occur Robinson’s name is always missing.  His name is omitted because unlike several others his quiet demeanor is often missed or overlooked.  Robinson didn’t toot his own horn he simply allowed his actions on the court to speak volumes regarding his talent.

Basketball from a fans perspective

Makes sense
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski certainly makes sense, Wednesday afternoon I watched a discussion surrounding Kawhi Leonard and the Spurs.   As I indicated earlier Kawhi is a restricted free-agent, Woj said, “He’s reported to have made it clear he wants Los Angeles” (Lakers or Clippers).  Kawhi cannot leave until 2019, “They cannot trade him because he becomes a rent-a-player.  Who wants to acquire a player who is liable to walk away the following year?”  Woj is correct in his assessment, I questioned trade to the Lakers because the Spurs would be forced to face him four times versus two if Kawhi is traded to an east team.  Despite this issue a trade to the Lakers might work out best for the Spurs.
Hall of Fame…. apparently not
I was viewing ESPN early Wednesday morning and a news crawl popped up on the bottom of my screen.  It read, “Hornets trade Dwight Howard to the Nets for Timofey Mozgov and two second round picks plus cash.”  I must admit I didn’t follow his play in Charlotte but there must be an issue at this point in Howard’s career.  The Nets become his 5th team since the August 2012 trade to the Lakers, the Superman persona he once espoused is a distant memory now.  It seems like yesterday, but it was 2004 when he burst on the scene straight out of high school.
At 6 feet 11 inches he was ready to conquer the NBA world and he did briefly early on, it was clear Howard was on his way to the Naismith Hall of Fame.  Since 2012 there have been a few bumps in the road, don’t misunderstand this.  Howard has experienced an above average NBA career but nothing close to the prediction of 2004.  He will turn 33 during the 2018-19 season so there is time to resurrect his career.  You remember Howard and Shaq arguing over which player was the “real” Superman?

The “new” Border War
The Big 8 and later Big 12 featured battles on the football field and basketball court between Kansas and Missouri.  This rivalry might have lasted close to 100 years until Mizzou left for the SEC.  Oh well no more Border War you say, well not quite instead of west side battles it’s now the east side.  Mizzou is now contending with Illinois for football and basketball talent.  Mizzou hiring Cuonzo Martin is responsible for the basketball border war.
As pointed out earlier Martin is from East St. Louis Illinois, the coach has attempted to collect all the metro basketball talent but has also made it clear he’s after Illinois talent as well.  The two schools only face one another in December during the Braggin Rights game with Illinois a Big 10 member and Mizzou in the SEC.  As you might say one door closes (Kansas) another opens (Illinois).  This is an interesting rivalry whether we are talking football or basketball.
He’s falling
Luka Doncic was rated the top choice in several 2018 mock drafts until recently.  For the last week or 10 days Doncic stock has been sliding downward.  Pundits are looking at portions of his game and say, “He doesn’t do____well or he’s not very athletic or he’s not very swift afoot”. This is what I believe, the guy can play it’s that simple.  A better question why must Doncic have the box checked at every position?
Someone pointed out “Larry Bird wasn’t very athletic either and look what he did?”  There is always the possibility he cannot play at the NBA level I don’t believe that to be the case.  It’s likely Doncic doesn’t fall to a position to be drafted by the Knicks.  Otherwise we’d hear another Stephen A. Smith rant like the one he leveled three years ago regarding Kristaps Porzingis.  Maybe he can’t play but unlike Smith I’m unwilling to make that type of statement until I see him in action, in any event welcome to the NBA Luka Doncic.

With the 25th pick the My Lakers choose……
Truth is I have no idea although I tend to believe it will be one of the 5 players below, then again it could be someone else.  I believe the Lakers will conduct the 2018 draft in the same manner as the old NFL Cowboys.  The Cowboys of President and GM Tex Schramm and head coach Tom Landry would draft the best athlete regardless of position.  Robinson is the only non-guard but any one of those named could be picked ahead of the Laker pick at 25.  I believe the Lakers will approach the 2018 draft in much the same manner, they are not in any order.
Zhaire Smith 6-4 shooting guard Texas Tech
Khyri Thomas 6-3 shooting guard Creighton
Kevin Huerter 6-7 shooting guard Maryland
Mitchell Robinson 7-1 center no college
Donte DiVincenzo 6-5 combo guard Villanova
Moritz Wagner 6-11 pf/c Michigan
Aaron Holiday 6-1 pg UCLA
De'Anthony Melton 6-3 pg/sg USC

That's 8 players and guess what, it might not be one of those mentioned above.
A late update, the Lakers acquired the 39th pick in tonight's draft, the pick belonged to the Sixers who will receive the 2019 second round pick of the Lakers along with cash.  The Lakers will now have the 25th, 39th and 47th pick.
