 BASKETBALL FROM A FANS PERSPECTIVE

I’m ol skool
The All-Star game always held my attention, who makes it as a starter who makes the reserve list.  It was decided to change the format, no more center, forward and guard combo.  Positions were eliminated, in addition the East-West format was done away with.  Last night witnessed Steph Curry and Klay Thompson on opposite teams as an example.  Sorry fans I remain impressed with the skill of the athletes but not the format.  Team LeBron beat Team Giannis 178-164, Kevin Durant won his second All-Star game MVP.  The highlight for me was the mountainous bounce pass (estimated to be a minimum of 13 feet by ESPN) Steph made to Giannis.  It was timed beautifully, Giannis caught it in the air and slammed the ball in the basket.  If you didn’t see it live hopefully you get a chance on SportsCenter or NBA TV highlights of the game.
“Buddy Buckets”
The Pelicans made Buddy Hield the 6th pick in the first round of the 2016 NBA draft, he didn’t last very long in New Orleans.  Hield would be traded in the middle of his rookie year to the Kings along with several other players.  The trade has proven beneficial to the former Oklahoma Sooner sharpshooter.  At the time Hield arrived in Sacramento he took on the role of valued reserve.
In this his third year with the Kings we’ve witnessed Hield moving into the starting position at shooting guard.  It’s proven quite beneficial, his scoring average has risen to its highest point since his arrival in the NBA, he’s scoring at a 20.5 ppg clip along with 5.1 rebounds.  We have two Bahamians playing in the NBA currently, DeAndre Ayton with the Suns and Buddy Hield with the Kings.  These two might lead more youngsters from this island nation off American shores to head stateside to play college basketball and perhaps the NBA.
For Sale
Once again reports are circulating owner James Dolan is placing the Knicks on the market.  Again, Dolan claims there is no story to the reported story.  I’m inquisitive, I wonder why it seems this story comes up every other month it seems. You might remember back on February 7 an account in Words eye view discussed Forbes value of NBA teams.  The Knicks were valued at $4 billion the highest value of any franchise however there is a question.
MSG is worth $4.5 billion which includes the Garden, the NBA Knicks, NHL Rangers and WNBA Liberty.  The Liberty are on the market and it’s reported a Chinese ecommerce company will eventually become the owner.  The Liberty are being spun off and placed on the market, could the Knicks face the same development.  I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for a decision, but this is an interesting story that seems to never go away permanently.
Who is the face of the NBA?
At one point it was a team, the Celtics and the Lakers, later it became Bill Russell.  Russell never had the spotlight alone he shared it with Wilt Chamberlain.  It became Oscar Robertson and Jerry West and later Kareem.  It then became Bird-Johnson and later Michael Jordan, Kobe and LeBron James.  I’m sure I missed a player or several, but you get the idea.
It’s always been a belief the face or name of a single or multiple player have been deemed the face of the NBA.  There are several somebodies who lead the NBA into the 21st Century, who might they be?  Could the face become that of Joel Embiid or maybe Luka Doncic it could be “The Greek Freak” Giannis Antetokunmpo.  Note the three mentioned are all international players with none born in the U.S., on the other hand it could be a player overlooked in this account.
Single game NBA records
November 1960 Philadelphia Warriors center Wilt Chamberlain recorded 55 rebounds against the Celtics.
March 1962 Philadelphia Warriors Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points versus the Knicks.
December 1990 Magic point guard Scott Skiles dished out 30 assists against the Nuggets.
November 2016 Steph Curry of the Warriors sunk 13 3-point baskets against the Pelicans.
October 1973 Laker center Elmore Smith blocked 17 Blazer shots in a game. *
December 1976 Spurs Larry Kenon had 11 steals against the Kansas City Kings.
April 1999 Nets Kendall Gill recorded 11 steals against the Heat.
*The NBA did not begin recording block shots until 1973-74 season.  Historians claim Chamberlain and Russell might have exceeded the Smith total.
