BASKETBALL FROM A FANS PERSPECTIVE
Vashon High School
The St. Louis school has sent several players to Division I programs across the nation, a few have made NBA rosters. Currently attending Vashon is small forward Cam’Ron Fletcher a Rivals 4-star prospect in the Class of 2020.  Although he’s received offers from several schools none is from Mizzou……. that is yet.  His teammate guard Mario McKinney in the Class of 2019 has signed with Mizzou and will be on campus in August.
No offer yet, McKinney let it be known he’s recruiting his classmate.  Although McKinney and Fletcher are friends there is no guarantee he’s going to be able to recruit his teammate.  After all this same scenario played out previously.  McKinney had committed but was yet to sign, his AAU teammate 4-star prospect E.J. Liddell was being recruited by Mizzou.  Despite his association with McKinney Liddell chose Ohio State.
Band Aid man
I didn’t realize Ronnie Suggs wore jersey number 3, who is Suggs you ask?  He’s a reserve guard on Mizzou’s squad.  Beyond that he’s going to be forced to change numbers in the middle of the season.  It just so happens his number 3 was worn by Derrick Chievous Mizzou’s all-time leading scorer.  As mentioned previously the number worn by Chievous will be retired February 19 and raised to the rafters at Mizzou Arena.  As for Suggs he will finish the season with another number.
Say what you mean, mean what you say
This from Friday morning’s edition of ESPN.com NBA page, Jackie McMullen (a writer I regard) wrote.  “Lakers win thriller, but Celtics win shot at AD” a reference to the Pelican power forward.  Anthony Davis Jr. claims he wants to play for the Lakers only, Anthony Davis Sr. says “Don’t trade him to the Celtics, I don’t like the way they treated Isaiah Thomas” or similar words.  I believe I expressed I’d love to have AD on the Lakers however I must wait until July 1.  Sorry Jackie I know you are a long-time Celtics fan, you probably want him in Boston as much as I do in Los Angeles.  One of us is likely to have our wish granted and the other faces disappointment, nothing personal I hope it’s me seeing Davis in purple and gold.
He fell out of the sky
The headline is intended to be humorous but consider this, you are a 6-foot point guard at the time you graduate high school.  Few were familiar with your name throughout the basketball nation.  You had a total of three offers beside the one chosen, Maryland-Eastern Shore and South Carolina State.  Wikipedia claims, “He was lightly recruited by Division I schools.”  He was unranked coming out of high school despite All-State honors.  This is no Hollywood movie such as “He’s Got Game, Coach Carter” or “Blue Chips” this is reality.
In the June 2019 draft you are projected a lottery pick; most mock drafts list you as the number two pick.  The athlete in this report is Temertrius Jamel “Ja” Morant or Ja Morant who plays at Murray State in Kentucky.  What occurred in the intervening two years that allowed Ja to rise from a relative unknown to the possibility of becoming the number two pick in the 2019 draft?  Assistant coaches on recruiting trips overlooked Morant or the talent was there all along, it was just a matter of developing it.
The great north
This information proved interesting, according to NBA.com there were 108 international players on NBA rosters on opening night.  You might be surprised which nation had the largest number I certainly was.  There were 11 Canadian players on NBA rosters, it’s been mentioned several times the growth of basketball north of the border.  The number might seem small by comparison to overall numbers but is noteworthy.  The round ball will never replace the hockey puck in Canada however the game growth continues an upward trend in popularity among the nation’s citizens.  A few months ago, a publication identified a Montreal group desiring an NBA franchise, will Vancouver return to the NBA one day?
