BASKETBALL FROM A FANS PERPECTIVE
He’s an O’Neal
Last year as a freshman Shaqir O’Neal was a 5-foot 10-inch guard on the Crossroads School team.  As a sophomore he now stands 6 foot 3 inches and weighs 165 pounds.  It’s likely he’ll continue to grow, his dad Shaquille is 7 foot 1 and older brother Shareef is 6 foot 9.  We understand he’s a talented future prospect.  Father Shaquille claims, “Both my boys will play in the NBA.”
Under a rock
I’ve maintained on more than one occasion this fact.  If you have talent…or rather potential NBA scouts will find you no matter where you play.  Daulton Hommes is a 6-foot 8-inch 218 pound forward, he plays at Point Loma Nazarene University.  Have no idea the location of the school neither did I, research indicates its main campus is located on the Point Loma waterfront in San Diego.
In yet another surprise Point Loma is an NCAA Division II school, your next question how did an NBA prospect wind up playing at D-II?  It’s an involved story surrounding a high school injury to Hommes which may have impacted his recruiting.  Keep in mind this is no guarantee he gets drafted or even becoming an undrafted free-agent.  Again, most interesting is the fact NBA scouts found him although he might have been under a rock so to speak.
Did you hear?
The Mavs J.J. Barea was ejected from Friday nights Lakers-Mavs contest.  The unusual   element the diminutive point guard received two technical fouls while seated on the bench.  Barea claims the official that forced him out of the game has a vendetta against him.  Barea claims to have received three techs last season and all were administered by the same official as Friday night.
I’m doing it anyway
The Lakers were reported to have their eyes on Mitchell Robinson of Western Kentucky in the 2018 NBA draft.  The 7-foot Robinson was a project, but the Lakers appeared to be impressed with him after a workout.  As the second round begin, I thought they still have a chance at drafting Robinson.  Pick after pick in the second round was made and finally the Knicks 3 picks ahead of the Lakers chose Robinson.
I’m looking at another Western Kentucky center for the Lakers, 6-foot 11-inch Charles Bassey.  Although Bassey was born in Lagos Nigeria he attended high school in San Antonio Texas.  One coach claim, “He’s the best big man to emerge from the city since a fella by the name of Shaquille O’Neal played there.”  We have no idea at this point if he is a one and done candidate however if he is it’s hoped the Lakers keep an eye on him.
He wants another opportunity
Jimmer Fredette arrived in the NBA in 2011 full of promise.  The 6-foot 2-inch point guard was made the 10th pick by the Kings that year after an outstanding season at BYU.  Fredette lasted 4 years in Sacramento, from there it was the Bulls, Pelicans and Winchester Knicks.  In 2016 the Knicks called him up signing him to a 10-day contract and in March he returned to Winchester and that was that, the end of his NBA career.  In 2016 he left for China and the Shanghai Sharks where he’s since become a star.
The first season Fredette averaged 37 points and the following year it was 36 points a game.  He’s paid in excess of $1.3 million a season a handsome salary.  On the outside we might believe everything in life is for Fredette, playing at a high level plus receiving an ample salary there’s nothing left for him to achieve.  Well there is the NBA, for a variety of reasons he didn’t succeed the first time, he now believes he’s ready for a second opportunity.  Fredette wants the break to play in the NBA once again, he believes his experience in China will prove beneficial to him.
