Basketball from a fan’s perspective

I missed this one
The Lakers have decided to go in another direction in hiring a head coach.  If you remember I pronounced Tyronn Lue the next head coach of the Lakers.  Lue despite the fact he was a local guy I had concerns.  We don’t know the full story however a Laker fan website claims Lue wanted a 5-year contract and the Lakers offered 3.  The Lakers are reported to be looking at several established names.  Frank Vogel, Mike Woodson and Lionel Hollins all former NBA coaches have been reported but missing is the name of Mark Jackson.
Draft Combine
The NBA extended 66 invitations to this year’s crop of athletes to the Draft Combine, May 14-19.  I’m going to guess several might not show or if they do like the past leave after a few events.  We’ll be surprised if Zion Williamson, Jay Morant or any projected lottery picks show up.

As for the others it will be mixed bag, several will be hoping to boost their stock in front of NBA scouts, another group likely plan on returning to school anyway but need to gain knowledge of their standing among peers.  Others plan on displaying their ability to prove they are ready despite missing this past season.  That would be     Darius Garland (Vanderbilt), Bol Bol (Oregon) and Jontay Porter (Mizzou) all injured last season will be in Chicago.
And then only 10 remain
As we move toward the middle of May there are few prospects in the Class of 2019 who remain uncommitted.  Most high schools begin graduating students later this month, its likely some may have graduated in December 2018.  Rivals.com contains a list totaling 150 prospects in the Class of 2019 they identify as the best of the best.
The only remaining number to decide total 10, without checking most of those probably reclassified into the Class of 2019.  While certainly accurate Rivals alone should not be considered the only barometer to measure potential basketball talent.  We can check back just two years ago, Ja Morant was not highly touted at the time he graduated Crestwood High School in Sumter, South Carolina.  Morant will likely be the number two or three pick in the 2019 NBA draft.
Peter Principle
“The Peter principle is a concept in management developed by Laurence J. Peter, which observes that people in a hierarchy tend to rise to their "level of incompetence". In other words, an employee is promoted based on their success in previous jobs until they reach a level at which they are no longer competent, as skills in one job do not necessarily translate to another.” 1.
This might just apply to the Lakers Rob Pelinka in his position as GM.  He’s probably better known as the agent for Kobe Bryant than anything else.  Pelinka was convinced either by owner Jeanie Buss or Magic Johnson to join the Laker front office.  Pelinka an attorney is probably a pretty smart guy, as for his ability to run a franchise the description above might apply.  Those of us in Laker Nation hope that is not the case.
