Basketball from a fan’s perspective

What comes next
Zion Williamson will be the top pick in the 2019 draft, what comes next?  Let’s speak hypothetically, if the Cavs secure the second spot do, they draft Ja Morant from Murray State.  Keep in mind the Cavs have a second year point guard Collin Sexton.  In his rookie year the numbers read 16.7 ppg, 3.0 assist and 3 rebounds for the 6-foot 2-inch point guard.  Those are decent numbers but how about the future, do the Cavs trust him over the future of Ja Morant?
On the other hand, the Cavs could follow the example formulated by the NFL Cowboys of an earlier era.  Those Cowboys would draft who they believed was the best athlete available, it didn’t matter they might have a player at the same position.  They would trade one of them for help in an area it was believed they were you lacking.  Sexton as indicated had a decent rookie year, the question is he the future of this Cavs franchise or Morant should he be available?
The clock is ticking
The NCAA basketball trial has concluded, several assistant coaches have either been sentenced to prison or its pending.  To date we’ve heard whispers, inuendo hints but nothing to indict any current active head coach. It’s been difficult to postulate the end of the story while in the middle of it, that’s been the case with this account.
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith claims Arizona paid DeAndre Ayton without offering us any proof.  I didn’t read the NCAA commission report headed by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, it’s my belief many of the recommendations by this commission appeared to focus on football reform more than basketball.  Hey NCAA, the clock is ticking what say you?  I don’t believe any well thinking person realize there are issues address them.
“He’s been around the block”
I’m unsure the term above is even used anymore, it simply implies a person has history or tenure in a trade or skill.  That might be the case for Frank Vogel former NBA coach, Vogel is being interviewed for the Laker job as head coach.  NBA expert Stephen A. Smith has decided in advance this is a “bad hire” for LeBron barely mentioning the Lakers.  I admit I don’t know a great deal about Vogel other than he’s served as head coach with the Magic and Pacers.
Smith is sometimes astonishing with his opinions at times.  I’m quite sure (or at least I believe) no team seeing a conceivable problem hires a coach who might be problematic.  Smith is always able to drop knowledge for us without providing a great deal of evidence other than his opinion.  As for me I’m not smart enough to see into the future the ramifications if the Lakers hire Vogel.  I suppose that’s the basis for ESPN paying him the big bucks, he’s Stephen A. Smith and were not.
Is it the conference?
Bill Self and Kansas had won 14 consecutive regular season Big 12 championships.  There were occasions during that time they lost the post-season tournament but that was rare.  The 2018-19 season was totally different in several ways, Kansas failed to win the conference crown.  Texas Tech and Kansas State tied for the championship with Kansas finishing in third.  The Jayhawks finished second in the post season Big 12 tournament.  This past season might be the exception but is change in the air?  Kansas recruits on a national and international perspective, they can attract some of the best talent around.
If this appears to offer criticism of Bill Self and the program that is not the case.  I will state once again the conference with the recent exception was full of pretenders rather than contenders.  As we look toward the fall in their list of Top 25 teams Kansas is ranked anywhere from 9 to 15, they trend above other Big 12 schools.  Big man Udoka Azubuike (7-1 270 pounds) indicated he was returning to school, guards Quentin Grimes and Devon Dotson declared for the NBA draft.  If one or both return the prospects for Kansas will improve however there is another consideration.  Is there a Texas Tech laying in the weeds or a Kansas State ready to challenge Kansas for Big 12 supremacy?  Next season should be interesting in the conference.
