Basketball from a fan’s perspective

The Lakers have a coach
Early Saturday evening came word the Lakers have hired a coach.  Frank Vogel who’s coached at the Pacers and Magic will become the head man.  A portion of his staff has been hired in the person of Jason Kidd former point guard and a prior head coach with the Bucks.  Despite the reservations of ESPN's Stephen A. Smith and former NBA player Stephen Jackson (must be a Stephen thing)🌝
the hire is okay to me.  Vogel is an “empty vessel”, if I discover he can’t coach this team to the next level I will be at the front of the line stating, “The Lakers need to change coaches.”
A friend wrote
“2018: Rockets will beat the Warriors next year when CP3s back. 2019: CP3s back, Durants injured and... the Rockets still dont beat the Warriors 🤔”  I really can’t add much to his statement.

The Iceman
It’s possible George Gervin was called a few profanities which didn’t resemble “The Iceman.”  The lean 6-foot 7-inch 183-pound guard/forward could hoop with the best of them back in the day.  In 1972 the ABA would routinely sign high school players or college players before their class graduated, that was the case for Gervin.  He played at Eastern Michigan for two seasons prior to signing with the ABA Virginia Squires.  In 1974 the Squires suffering financially sold his rights to the Spurs then an ABA team.
Gervin’s best years were spent as a member of the Spurs by then absorbed in the NBA.  Gervin was a 9-time NBA All-Star and received numerous other NBA awards over the course of his career.  Gervin would spend one season with the Bulls and begin play in Europe before eventually retiring in 1990.  No record could determine why the nickname Iceman, maybe it was shooting under pressure, you know the saying “cool as ice.”  He didn’t patent the shot he claims Wilt Chamberlain had it prior to him, he would make the finger roll legendary.  Did I forget, The Iceman is in the College and Naismith Hall of Fame.
The rich keep getting richer
That would appear to be the prevalent statement when it comes to college basketball recruiting.  I just checked ESPN’s college class rankings for 2019 and the usual suspects are in place except one.  Occupying the top spot is Duke followed by Arizona, Villanova, USC and Louisville rounding out the first five.
The Big 12 was well represented with Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State all finishing in the Top 25.  Did you notice anything unusual; I’ll give you a minute or two?  Times up, you failed to realize the Kansas Jayhawks were nowhere to be found.  Does this say Kansas is going to have some stiff competition in the 2019-20 season?  We can’t guarantee anything but that might indeed be the case.
